6759 On April 20, 2018, J.R. (Jane Rhea) Hyder Clayton departed this material world to join again with her husband in heaven, Neville T. (Cowboy) Clayton.
Born in Elizabethton, Tenn., on December 2, 1930, she grew up in her Appalachian Mountain home. She thrived in Elizabethton while enjoying riding her horse along with spending many enjoyable moments with her precious dog, Skippy. J.R. developed pneumonia at the age of 5 and was the first to receive an O2 tank in her country home which saved her life. However, during this time of illness she was introduced to a world, miles away, called Daytona Beach when someone showed her a picture of a palm tree on a beach and never forgot this paradise. Once healed from this traumatic illness, J.R. attended elementary school and graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1948 where she was voted Senior Superlative Best Speaker. She went on to attend East Tennessee State University from 1948 to 1951, then graduated with a Medical Technology degree from Duke University in 1953.
J.R. started her career as medical technologist in Abingdon, Va., at Johnston Memorial Hospital from 1953 to 1955 but had her sights set on a warmer climate. She took a job at Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach as Chief Technologist from 1955 to 1960. During this time she met 'The Most Eligible Bachelor from Daytona Beach' while skiing at Wilders Cut in 1955. Friends remember her as saying "That's the man I am going to marry!" So indeed, they married on September 28, 1956 at Calvary Baptist Church in Daytona Beach. She was a faithful choir member at Calvary from 1956 to 1963 when GOD led her to uncharted territory in South Daytona. From the Baptist Chapel in Daytona Beach, J.R. was involved in becoming a Charter Member of First Baptist Church of South Daytona in 1967. While being instrumental in birthing this new community church, she dove in to volunteering in the choir, teaching women's Sunday school classes, pulpit committee member, sanctuary building committee member along with numerous other committees. She was a faithful volunteer as long as the shrimp weren't running in the Halifax River. J.R. did not limit her volunteering activities to her church but to other avenues as well. She was a believer of the neighborhood school systems and was a strong opponent of school busing. She was a charter member of the first Volusia County Advisory Committee for the Volusia County School Board. She also served as chairman for this committee until terms were limited. (She claimed they limited terms because she 'worried' them)!
J.R. was awarded the honor of 'Lay Person of the Year' in 1987 by the local Phi Delta Kappa Chapter. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution at the Major Folsom Chapter in Elizabethton. She served on the South Daytona Elementary School Advisory Council. J.R. served on the State Textbook Council for the Social Studies until 2003 when loss of her sight prevented further service. J.R.'s loss of vision did not prevent her from serving the Lord in other capacities. She continued her service and passion for volunteering when she was chosen as Outreach Director for First Baptist Church of South Daytona. She was also the first Purple Hat recipient from the Women of Grace. Because she was a Charter member of her hometown church, she volunteered as church Historian for many years.
J.R. is predeceased by her husband, Neville (Cowboy) Clayton, of 62 years, and her dear sister, Dr. Marjorie Nelle Cardwell of Elizabethton. She leaves her devoted children, Becca, Preston, and Dorislyn along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other loving family members.

6761 On August 11, 1913, Keith Blalock died while operating a hand car on a mountain railroad. He was the husband of Malinda Blalock, who was North Carolina's only known female Civil War soldier.

At the beginning of the Civil War, Keith and his wife, Malinda, lived near Grandfather Mountain in Watauga County. Despite being Unionists, the couple both enlisted in the 26th North Carolina Troops in March 1862. Malinda enlisted under the name Sam. Keith's decision to enlist was made primarily to avoid being drafted by the recently passed Confederate Conscription Act, and Malinda simply did not want her husband going to war without her.

While their regiment was stationed near Kinston, Keith devised a plan to be medically discharged by rubbing his body with poison oak and causing a rash. Once he obtained his discharge, his wife disclosed her gender, and promptly received a discharge as well.

Upon their return to the mountains, the Blalocks joined Unionist guerrillas operating in and around Grandfather Mountain. Keith was wounded several times fighting Confederate home guard units.

After the war, Keith ran for political office in Mitchell County, but was defeated. Malinda died from natural causes in 1901. The couple is buried in Avery County.

6763 On February 15, 2023, Earnest Jackson, known lovingly to everyone as Mouse, passed away at the age of 89 following a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s Disease. Born January 14, 1934, he was the son of William Johnson Jackson and Sarah Head Jackson.

Mouse was born and raised in Johnson City and never lived more than 6 miles from his childhood home. He attended Science Hill High School but was unable to graduate due to financial obligations at home. Several years later, he was able to obtain his GED. He began working at the Dutchmaid Restaurant at age 14 and a few years later, moved to the Dixie Restaurant, working as a cook and a carhop. This is where he met the love of his life and future wife, Billie. They were married in 1953, and a few months later, found out they were expecting their first child. By 1955, they had a second child and Mouse began looking for more stable employment. He began working as a firefighter for the Johnson City Fire Dept in August of 1955, where he was employed for almost 10 years. Firefighting was his true passion, as he loved the excitement and being able to help others daily. With a growing family, and a third child, he made the tough decision to hang up his fire boots full-time and search for a job with better pay and benefits. He began working as a truck driver for Robinson Freight Line in 1964 and worked for several other companies throughout his career until his eventual retirement from ABF in 1996. He never completely got firefighting out of his system, however, and spent many years as a volunteer firefighter for Central Fire Dept.

Mouse was the kindest, most generous man, who loved his family, friends, neighbors, and community fiercely. He could usually be found sitting on his front porch waving to every car that passed. When stopping by for a visit, you would usually find a full driveway with people occupying every seat surrounding him. He was a one-in-a-billion person and never met a stranger. His home was always open to anyone needing a meal, a place to stay, or just a listening ear. He was a devoted member of Central Community Christian Church and loved the Lord and his church family with all his heart.

Mouse is preceded in death by his loving wife, Billie Fair Jackson; his parents: William and Sara Jackson; brothers: Bill Jackson, Bob Jackson, Jim Jackson, Don Jackson, and Dave Jackson; and a sister: Mary Kate Jackson Byrd. He is survived by his brothers: Jack Jackson and Kyle Jackson; his children: Robin Pearman (Lee Roy) of Elizabethton, Rocky Jackson (Pam) of Johnson City, Lisa Bowman (Matt) of Watkinsville, GA, and Kim Hannan (Greg) of Elizabethton; his grandchildren: Chad Hammonds, Cheri Swartz (Kelly) of Jonesborough, Kara Christiansen (Christina) of Johnson City, Luke Bowman (Jordan) of Colbert, GA, and Haley Hannan of Elizabethton; his great-grandchildren: Zoe Swartz, Jet Swartz, Cayden Hannan, Charli Phillips, and Luca Bowman; among several nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Our family would like to give special thanks to Tammy Dickey for all of her help, care, and love for Mouse during his final months. We would also like to thank his caregiver Alyssa, the entire team at Amedisys Hospice, and his church family for all the prayers, visits, food, and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mouse’s memory can be made to the Johnson City Fire Dept, the Central Volunteer Fire Dept, or Central Community Christian Church.

Mouse’s family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 pm on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. Visitation will resume on Monday, February 20, at 12:00 pm, followed by a celebration of a life well-lived beginning at 1:00 pm at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A committal service at Happy Valley Memorial Park will immediately follow.

6768 On January 2, 2017, Nadine Grindstaff Fisher passed away peacefully while being read poetry by her son-in-law. Mrs. Fisher suffered with Alzheimer's, and had declined steadily following the death of her beloved husband, Harold B. Fisher, just thirteen months prior.

Mrs. Fisher was born April 27, 1932, and was raised on Stoney Creek, just outside of Elizabethton, TN. Although their coal mining father did all he could, the family of twelve struggled financially, like most during that era. She was a member of the basketball team in High School, made excellent grades, and decided she wanted more.

She, the oldest of six girls and baby sister to four brothers, was the first of her family to attend college. With no money, she packed what she had, and attended Lees-McRae College, where she entered agreements with them to work for her education and realized nursing was her calling. She worked at Grace Hospital, and became an R.N. While in nursing school, she met a handsome, young businessman by the name of Harold B. Fisher.

Mother and Daddy adored one another. They were together for ten years, growing their business, Fisher's Market of Morganton, before adopting their first child, Gina (incidentally, Mrs. Fisher passed on Gina's birthday, which Gina sees as a true honor). A couple years later, along came Art, and then Marla, to complete the family.

The family greatly enjoyed travelling and camping, especially with Jim Fisher's family. Together, they travelled the country and Canada. She loved her church, First Presbyterian Church of Morganton, televised trials, swimming in her pool (even though she never really learned to swim), playing board games, working puzzles, playing on Yahoo with her siblings, and ice cream.

Once her children had flown the nest, she returned to her nursing career, working at Grace Ridge as a supervisor.

She was a tough, but loving woman. To earn her trust was attainable, but difficult. Earning her respect was to be treasured. Her love for her grandchildren was endless. We know she is in Heaven with her husband of 57 years, and they are watching us all. She is survived by her children; Gina Fisher-Isaacs and husband Jody of Morganton, NC; Art Fisher and wife Kelly of Morganton, NC; and Marla Fisher Barnwell and husband Chris of Greensboro, NC; grandchildren Kelsey Fisher, Carlee Poole, Luke Fisher, Ben Fisher, Spencer Barnwell, Addison Poole, Holden Barnwell, Harper Isaacs, and Ragan Fisher; sisters Judy Scholl, Mary Nell Greer, Erma Barker, Ann Breeland, and a very special sister, Della Nettles, of SC, without whom, we would not have made it through this time as well; brothers Orville Grindstaff, and JD Grindstaff, and numerous nieces and nephews Preceded in death by; beloved husband, Harold Bennett Fisher, and his parents Bennett H. and Etta Fisher; her parents Vaught and Lina Grindstaff; brothers Bert Grindstaff and Ernest Grindstaff.

We will miss you, Mommy. Your wit, your fierce loyalty, your lemon meringue pies, and your honesty.

A special thanks to Cambridge House of Longview NC, and our cousin, Conlee Fisher Clarke of Catawba Regional Hospice, for her help and guidance during the last thirteen months.
Grindstaff, Myrtle Nadine (I63286)

6769 On June 19, 2017, Evelyn "L" McReynolds Ledwell died peacefully at home held tenderly in the arms of the people she loved most; her husband, Richard L. Ledwell I, who was the love of her life, and their beloved son and daughter-in-law, Richard L. "Ricky" and Tracy Ledwell.

As Evelyn passed, a light rain began to fall, and surely, surely, it must have been the joyous tears of all Heaven welcoming an angel home. Evelyn was a delicate, but strong-willed, woman with a loving, generous heart. She delighted in all things beautiful, whether it be a flower blooming, a pan of biscuits baking, a new dress, or most especially, the love that was always in her husband's eyes.

Among the loved ones she leaves behind are Anne and Jimmy Garrett, Ron and Sandy Ledwell, Margie Grindstaff, Shirley and Bill Ketron, Mary Moore, Sandy and John Kieffer, Jack and Suzanne McReynolds, and Pamela and Dove Schriber. Loved ones who had gone before but who were held close in her heart are her mother and father, Ida and Lee McReynolds, who will be so happy to see her again, Junior Ledwell, George McReynolds, Rose Metts, Jimmy McReynolds, Betty Jane McReynolds, Viola Fritz and Faye Pierce.

She would want to offer a special thank you and prayer to Anne and Jimmy Garrett and Ron and Sandy Ledwell for their love and continuing support to her and Richard. Her family appreciates so much the caregivers who helped Evelyn, especially Janie Horne, and the kind and gentle care she received from in-home hospice.

A service to celebrate Evelyn's life was held Thursday, June 22nd, at 6:00 p.m. in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Chad Blevins officiating. Visitation was held from 4 to 6 p.m. prior to the service. A graveside service will follow Friday morning, June 23rd, at Glenwood Cemetery, at 10 a.m. Please keep her in your heart and her family in your prayers.

6771 On June 5th with all of his children home, Dad departed earth for a pain free Heavenly Home.
Once a Marine-always a marine especially if you were a drill instructor. We agreed that when Dad entered the Pearly Gates he began to instruct others.
He served our military in the U.S. Marine Corp proudly in combat and everyday life. Dad was quick to speak his mind but if it came from his heart you knew it. If you entered our home you knew that you were family.
If it were not for the loving care of Dr. Thad Carter and our precious MHG Surgery Outpatient Staff Nurses the past six years could have been worse. We will miss our drill instructor!

Jim dedicated his life to being a devoted and loving husband, Dad, Papaw, Uncle, Brother, and friend. Jim delighted in family time. Jim’s dinner table was always large enough for the entire family as they gathered for Lena’s Sunday lunch.

He was a member of the Cranberry High School Class of 1956 and a bus driver and member of the football team. Jim was proud to be a lifetime member of Elk Park Christian Church, where he served as a board member and deacon. Jim was a founding member of the Liar’s Table at The Country House. From 1972 until 1990, Jim and Lena also owned and operated a grocery store in Elk Park, selling groceries, gas, feed, coal, fence post and just about anything that was needed. After selling the store business, they purchased Blue Ridge Orchard, growing trees and nursery stock. Jim enjoyed his later years working on the farm, daily visits to Brinkley Hardware, the Elk Park Post Office, Country House, and hanging out with the boys at H&H.

Jim loved God and lived his life at the foot of the cross as a living example. Jim leaves his family uncountable life lessons, memories, unlimited and unconditional love. His family will always remember his words to them: “pray for each other, and take care of each other,” and “time changes all things.” He would always tell his grandchildren to “keep your eyes on the road and your mind on your business” as he taught them to drive anything with a motor. When you ask Jim how he was doing, he would say “not good, but super good.” He told his children many times “In this life we will have to do a lot of things, but one thing we do not have to do is complain.” His advice to everyone was “always to pray about it first before making a decision.” As he would say to us today, “Carry on!”

6790 On the evening of January 7, 2023, Alsie Jackson Byrd, 89, was called to be with the Lord at her home in Elizabethton. Alsie was born on April 7, 1933, which was also her mother’s 43rd birthday. She was the daughter of the late James T. and Effie Jackson.
Alsie graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1952, and enjoyed attending all their class reunions throughout the years. Alsie loved being a “Fighting Cyclone.” After graduation, she went to work for Dr. R.J. Allen at the Franklin Clinic. Alsie truly loved this time in her life and the patients and families that she considered friends. She would often talk about going on house calls with Dr. Allen and being paid in chickens, vegetables and most anything but money. Alsie married Jack C. Byrd on January 31, 1959 and they moved to Cocoa, Fla., where Jack worked at the Kennedy Space Center. While in Florida, Alsie lived her best life growing lemon trees, tropical flowers and enjoying all that the beach had to offer. She loved her car turned beach buggy and would often turn the water hose inside her car to clean it — much to Jack’s chagrin.
After their daughter Lisa was born in 1966, they returned to Elizabethton where Alsie was a homemaker, PTA chairman, Girl Scout leader, and EHS band parent. Anything Lisa did, Alsie was actively involved and always found a way to organize all activities with ease. In 1980, she started working for H&R Block where she worked until she retired at the age of 80. Alsie always said it was the best job, as she could work during the winter and play in the summer. Her H&R Block friends were her family and she spent time with many of them after retirement.
In 1995, she went from Alsie to Nana as the joy of her life was born. Nana loved her “Precious” Emily more than anything in the world. Nana became part of every aspect of Emmy’s life. Nana was always by Emmy’s side in whatever she did — from taking her to field trips in preschool, traveling with volleyball teams to multiple states in high school, and then becoming part of Emmy’s Clemson family during college. Nana loved a good football tailgate because she always wanted to “be where the action was.” She traveled to many Clemson games including bowl games to Phoenix, Dallas, and New Orleans. She may have even been found singing the Clemson Fight Song at Pat O’Briens on Bourbon Street. Emmy and Nana attended the 2016 Clemson National Championship together and Nana said it was one of the best nights of her life “being with her girl.”
Along with her family, the most important part of her life was her church. Alsie was a member of East Side Baptist Church since 1959. She loved her Victory Sunday School Class and her church family very much. Alsie was a strong prayer warrior and read her Bible daily. It could always be found beside her chair.
She was preceded in passing by her parents, James and Effie Jackson; brothers, James “Junior” Jackson and Norman Jackson; sisters, Gaylene Stanbery and Gwina Ellis; and Jack, her husband of 50 years.
Left to cherish her memory and all their wonderful times together are her daughter and “son” Lisa Byrd Williams and Michael Williams, and granddaughter and “grandson” Emmy Williams Monroe and Jordan Monroe, and granddog, Lyla June. Alsie also has several cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews who were very dear to her. In particular her nephew, Larry Stanbery, who faithfully called to check on her every night for many years, and niece, Sherry Ellis Hubbard, who supported the entire family with her love and care.
The family would like to thank the caring staff at Caris Healthcare and Ivy Hall Nursing Home. The family would also like to express their deepest appreciation to Dr. Israel Garcia as well as caregivers, Lisa Ducey, Vicky Thomas Prater and Brooke Smith. Memorial contributions may be made to East Side Baptist Church, 1509 Siam Road, Elizabethton, TN 37643 or www.eastsidebaptist.org/make-a-donation/.
A celebration of Alsie’s life will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, January 11, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton with Pastor Tim Adkins officiating. There will be a graveside service at Happy Valley Memorial Park on Thursday, January 12, at 11 a.m. with Rev. Ronnie Campbell officiating. Pallbearers will be Jarrod Ellis, Randy Jackson, Jordan Monroe, Hunter Nelson, Chris Stanbery and Michael Williams. Honorary pallbearers are the men and women of East Side Baptist Church, and neighbors and friends of Superior Acres Subdivision.

6791 On the evening of May 22, 2021, at the age of 88, Peggy Cornett McCumber slipped ever so peacefully from this life to enter into her eternal home in Heaven.

Although, she succumbed to Alzheimer’s, after living with the devastating disease for 20 years, Peggy will be remembered for her witty and clever personality. She always made a person feel at ease in her presence, treating them like family. In fact, during the 11 years that she resided at the Cranberry House, she was fondly referred to as “Mamaw.”

Peggy was a native of Avery County and spent most of her time there, with the exception of a 10 span when she lived in Madisonville, KY with her husband Bob. She was the daughter of the late founding pastor and well-known Bishop James & Ethel Nance Cornett, of the Church of Jesus Christ, in Newland, where she was a lifelong member and sang and played the guitar. 6797 On the morning of February 7th, 2022, Christine began her new life in Christ, more alive than she has ever been! Christine was born on May 14, 1923, to the late William “Bill” Jennings Bryant and Opal Vestal Oliver Smith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnson Hayes Eller; sister, Geraldine Smith Peters; brother, Robert Harvey Smith and wife, Joan Smith; nephews, David Barton Smith, and nephew-in-law, Francis Fremont “Chip” Purdy. Those left to cherish her memory include her nieces, Sharon Suzette Purdy, of Arlington, TX, Teresa Anne Peters Broome and husband, Rick, of Elizabethton, TN, Stacie Smith Crim and husband, Bill, Jackson, MS; Joanne Blair and husband, Fred, Sandra Kay Eller, Barbara King, Michael Heaton and wife, Beth, Pat Edwards and husband, Gary, Pam Jameson and husband, Charles, and Jane Bumgarner and husband, Chris, nephew, Brent Smith and wife, Laura of Oxford, MS, David Ellis and wife, Kathy; two great nephews, Sean Purdy and wife, Jill of Cumming, GA, Sterling Purdy and wife, Donna, of Marietta, GA. Several other great nieces and nephews also survive. Christine also leaves behind many adoring friends, including her neighbors on Pine Hill Road, the First Baptist Church family, including the Kitchen Ladies of FBC, and a special little girl, Abigail, who loved Aunt Chris and called her the “Brownie Lady.”
Growing up in Elizabethton, Christine and her siblings, Geraldine, and Bob (Harvey) lost their father when they were very young. Because of this great loss, they developed a lifelong bond, one that never diminished but only grew stronger year after year. They cared and looked after one another well into their 90’s. Christine was the last of the siblings to leave and enter God’s rest.
In 1941, Christine graduated from Elizabethton High School. Shortly after graduation, she began work at North American Rayon Corporation. Never would she have imagined that she would work in the Shipping office for the next 55 years! Christine always enjoyed her work and the friendships she made throughout her career, maintaining those relationships until her death.
In 1942, Christine married the love of her life, a handsome and loving young man from Heaton, NC, Hayes Eller. Not having children of their own, the thing that brought them the most joy was spending time and doting on their nieces and nephews. Throughout the years, they showered them with unconditional love, support, guidance, and many expressions of love and gifts. They also enjoyed square dancing and made lifelong friends with members of their dance club. They traveled throughout Northeast TN and Western NC to a new dance venue each week.
Christine and Hayes loved Daytona Beach and enjoyed many vacations by the shore along with her brother, Bob, and his family. And as was customary, they always took their nieces, Sharon, and Teresa Anne with them so they could be with their cousins, Brent, Bart and Stacie.
Always family oriented, Christine was very close to her mother, Opal, and cared for her until her death in 1992. In addition, she also helped care for her sister, Geraldine, along with her nieces to ensure that their mother was loved and cared for every day.
Christine had a servant’s heart and was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, Elizabethton. From childhood to her final days, she was an active member. One of her favorite and highest honors was to serve as the Welcome Center Greeter on Sunday mornings. She did this for many years and always welcomed members/visitors with a warm and genuine smile. Everyone who met and knew her loved her!! Christine also served in the kitchen as one of the FBC Kitchen Ladies. For many years up to the present, she worked along her fellow church friends to serve many meals to her church family during our fellowships, celebrations, and weekly dinners.
Christine was a loyal UT and Atlanta Braves fan. She rarely missed watching these teams play on television. In earlier years, Christine enjoyed going to the UT games in Knoxville, a tradition that carried on for many years. She was definitely a passionate VOLS fan, all the way! And then there was shopping! Christine enjoyed shopping tremendously, but she usually bought something for someone other than herself. She was a beautiful, loving, charming and generous giver, especially to her family. “Aunt Chris,” as she was affectionately known, was also famous for her sweet pickles and deviled eggs. Everyone loved her deviled eggs, they were always high in demand, the secret was the pickles she made herself!
Christine Smith Eller had a wonderful life because she lived life with joy! Giving to others of her time, money, and love, her life exemplified the life of a Godly woman. She loved the Lord, her family, and her First Baptist Church family. She was a role model for all of us. Christine has received her award and she is now dancing with Jesus. What a legacy, what a life! “In the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.” Abraham Lincoln
A Celebration of Life Service for Christine Smith Eller will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 12, 2022 at First Baptist Church, Elizabethton with Reverend Todd Hallman officiating.
