6714 Note from Deborah Timko:
Dovie was born to Elizabeth before she married John Deloach, who was not the father. She was shown living with her grandparents, Joel and Mary E. Beck, in 1880 Carter County, TN census, listed as their granddaughter. She possibly had to live with them until she was 18. She married John H. Hardin in about 1898.

The 1900 Carter County, TN census has this listing:
11th District Allentown
Household 120
John H. Hardin Dec 1845 54 TN TN TN
Dovie May 1867 32 TN TN NC
William Aug 1899 9/12 TN TN TN

She was member of Valley Forge Methodist Church. Pall bearers were Stanley Heaton, Ernie Deloach, Cecil Hardin, Luther Hardin & Ottie Hardin, Ben H. Williams, Sr., Jack Kennedy & Ray Johnson. Note: Aunt Dovie had dimentia, Betty remembers her talking to herself.

Erroneously listed as David A. Beck, 2 year old male, in the 1870 Carter County, TN census.

6715 Note from John James Henry : John Carter was one of the first permanent white settlers in Tennessee in 1766. He opened a store at Carter's Station in Carter's valley (just west of Kingsport, TN). He and other settlers thought they were in Virginia but learned later that they were a little too far south and in land claimed by North Carolina. After Indians burned his store in 1768, he moved east to a safer region along the Watauga River. The area near his settlement later became Elizabethton, TN. He was a merchant, farmer, land agent (entry taker) and land speculator, who before his death in 1781 became the richest man in North Carolina, though his home is now in Tennessee. A gentleman educated in England, John greatly loved wandering in the wilderness and often went on long hunting trips into uncharted territory, taking along his overseer as guide and companion. It was on these trips that he saw much of the land and was able to acquire the choice property (cheap) for resale to later settlers at significant profit. John was principal Author of the Articles of the Watauga Association (the first Constitution of a self governing body in America) and served on the committee which drafted North Carolina's first State Constitution, He served as a Colonel in the NC Militia during the American Revolution and Commanded the defense of the Watauga Settlements against a British incited raid by the Cherokees in 1778. He trained the troops used by Col. John Sevier in the battles he won against British Gen. Howe in North and South Carolina. Carter, John (I21145)

6716 Note from John James Henry : Landon CARTER, along with his Father, John CARTER, and William BEAN were the first permanent English settlers in Tennessee in 1766. On his grave, near the Carter Mansion, the DAR has placed a marker listing his birth as 1760. However, tradition has it that he was ten years old when his father founded Carter's Station in 1766 so I list his birth as 1756. THe earlier birth date is also supported by the fact that Landon signed the petition asking North Carolina to approve The Washington District in 1773, and by NC law (which his father was well aware of) you had to be at least 16 to sign a petition. The petition was approved by the Whig Legislature in 1776. The Carters first settled in Carters Valley (just west of Kingsport, TN) and later moved near Watauga Old Fields (a deserted Indian Town) on the Watauga River, near present day Elizabethton. Prime movers in the establishment of the Watauga Association (which had the first written constitution in America), John and Landon were influential in the Constitutions and founding of the Washington District of North Carolina in 1776, the State of Franklin (1786) and the State of Tennessee in 1796. Carter County is named for John and Elizabethton is named for Landon's wife, Elizabeth (MACLIN) CARTER. Landon was a Major in the North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution, serving under Colonel John Sevier, who later as Governor of Tennessee (1796) made him General in charge of the Tennessee Militia. The 1830 Census for Carter Co., TN lists Alfred M. Carter, George Carter and William B. carter as heads of households. These are undoubtedly Three of Landon's sons. No mention is made of John Maclin Carter, but the following are listed William Carter age 40-49 (5), William Carter age 30-39 (10), and Thomas Carter age 30-39 (4), all of which had households (number of members in the parenthesis). These are possibly descendants of Landon's half brothers, John and Emanuel. The 1840 Census Shows Landon's sons A. M. Carter and William B. Carter as well as the older William (4) listed in 1830 and two of Alfred Moore Carter's sons but not George, nor the Thomas or younger William above. Carter, Landon C. (I25933)

6718 NOTE: The following letter disputes the parents of Mary Taze Cowan as recordedhere. This letter indicates that her father was Charles Cowan, so she may be placed in the wrong family.

Source: John H. Jessee [PO Box 102, Sugar Grove,VA 24375] wrote, 3/25/2001, with this very important information both correcting and providing additional information for the descendants of William Vincent Jessee, Jr. son of William Vincent Jessee, son of Archer Jessee. William Vincent Jessee, Jr. married Rebecca Stinson, daughter of Edward Stinson and Jennie Burk, daughter of William Burk and Rebecca Jessee. This is also a delightful letter full of family stories.
My mother was ninety-four years of age on the sixteenth of March two thousand and one. I was able to talk with her on that date and during our conversation I ask her about her Grandmother Buckles. She, without any hesitation in the conversation, proceeded to tell me about my great grandmother and several other family members. My mother informed me that My great grandmother's name was Mary Taze Cowan prior to her marriage to my great grandfather Charles Buckles and that Charles Buckles father's name was Abraham Buckles. Mother said that her father's full name was John Taze Buckles and that he hadbeen given his mother's middle name. Without the slightest hesitation that some of a lesser age, including myself, would find necessary to remember a name, she told me that my great grandmother's father's name was Charles Cowan. Several other Cowan names were mentioned, but I was unable, due to the excitement of the birthday event, to make the other Cowan family connections. Some of Cowan names mentioned were Sally, Sally Wool and Mary Elizabeth.
After all the incredible name remembering my mother hesitated, laughed almost silently and said she would never forget the story grandma had told her when she was a child about grandma's elopement with Grandpa Buckles. Mom remembered that her grandma told her that she and grandpa had been pledged when they were children by their respective families to be married when they reached a suitable age. According to great grandma s story as told by my mom, when the time drew near for them to be married, rather than waiting for the traditional marriage ceremony to take placethey decided to take matters into their own hands and secretly steal away and be married.
The plans to elope were made, but one slight but significant problem stood in their way. That problem was a bulldog owned by great grandma's father Charles Cowan. Evidently this bulldog had gained some notoriety for his dedication to the Cowan family. He had built some reputation, especially for his nighttime vigilance guarding the family and their possessions. The bulldog had one weakness that my great grandmother was aware of that might cause him to become distracted from his guard duties. This dog had developed a fondness for biscuits, and great grandma realized if she kept him occupied by feeding him biscuits during the course of the evening of the planned arrival of great grandpa thatgreat grandpa might arrive without being detected. On the date the elopement was to take place; great grandma had hidden away a sufficient quantity of biscuits that she hoped would serve the purpose of her intent.
As planned, on the eve of great grandpa's arrival to steal her away and after the family had gone tobed, great grandma began the task of feeding the bulldog biscuits. By the timegreat grandpa arrived the bulldog was so stuffed with biscuits that he had forgotten his primary responsibility to warn the family of intruders. Without regard to his reputation he had fallen asleep and failed to awaken the family when great grandpa stole my great grandma away.
This story somewhat provides a brief glimpse into the past and into the activities of the lives of our ancestors. I can in one way personally relate to a part of the story. I have just like thebulldog developed a fondness for biscuits. I have

6732 Obituary for Bill "Doc" Bagby
On Tuesday, January 26th 2021, Dr. William Robinson Bagby of Montezuma North Carolina passed from our mortal realm of natural causes.
Bill “Doc” Bagby was born July 22, 1925 to James Willis Bagby and Lucile Shuford Bagby in Johnson City, TN. He and his twin brother Robert Bagby were the youngest of six children.
Bill grew up in Johnson City in eastern TN, and Avery County in western NC; mountain country that he loved fiercely his entire lifetime. Grandfather Mountain, NC, was his symbolic home. He lived his last 25 years in Montezuma, NC, in perfect view of that iconic peak of Blue Ridge Mountains.
Bill joined the Army Air Corps with his twin brother Bob after HS graduation in 1943. They were 17 years old at their time of enlistment. He was a radio operator on the “Flying Fortress” B-17, and later on the “Superfortress” B -29. The twins were stationed at Alamogordo at the time of the Atomic Bomb tests. All these years later, dad still knew Morse code by heart, and in his day, he could “send” or “receive” as quickly as anyone. After their tours, Bill did his pre-dental college at University of TN. He then entered University of TN Health Science Center Dental School in Memphis, TN. Always energetic and ever playful as well as studious, Bill’s lust for life gave rumor to an “incident” involving joyriding with a city fire engine.
While in dental school, he met the love of his life, June Isabel Stribling. They married in 1949. They were inseparable for over 72 years and truly were life partners in every sense.
After graduation he started his first dental practice in Dyersburg, TN. They moved to Rantoul, IL, in 1957, where he worked as a contract dentist for Chanute Air Force Base. Shortly after, they started his private dental practice in Rantoul and practiced there until 1997.
Dr. Bagby was an active member of Rotary Club in Rantoul. He served on the School Board, and he was involved with the Republican Party. During these years, Bill and June had 4 children. They instilled in their children a profound sense of home in the mountains of Western NC, especially that wonder of nature, Grandfather Mountain.
In another vein, Bill instilled a sense of competition in his children. He was a top-notch ping pong player, and he taught his grandkids his skills. Quipped a friend, “We are still finding ping pong balls from 20 years ago from our kids practicing slamming the ball after your Dad trounced them in ping pong.”
Bill enjoyed being a twin, and they played many a joke on friends and family. Bill even tricked his middle school aged daughter into believing that he was Uncle Bob picking her up from school. Their ability to fool even their own children was legendary. Bill also had a wicked sense of humor, that was sometimes corny. One of his favorites was “Run to the roundhouse Nellie, he can’t corner you there!”
Bill and June loved music, and especially bluegrass which he associated with the Blue Ridge Mountains. They hosted many porch concerts at their home in Montezuma with local musicians playing for friends and family.
Bill was keenly interested in anything historic, from world and US history, to family history. He often went to various towns to research his family heritage. He was especially proud that his Mom hailed form Morganton NC.
Family was always primary, and biannual reunions in Avery County still continue for the Bagby clan. When the property that his parents and family had once owned became available, Bill and June bought it with the intent of returning home. In 1999, they were able to do just that, moving back to Montezuma, NC, after he retired from dentistry. He always said that he lived in heaven after moving back to his childhood home.
Bill and June’s love was unceasing throughout their marriage, a true partnership, a true friendship, and a true love story. Bill’s faith was also an important part of his life. He especially loved the Crossnore Presbyterian Church in NC. He served Crossnore as an Elder for many years and played a significant role in seeing a large addition the church from conception to completion. Bill and June delivered Meals on Wheels in Avery County for over 15 years stopping only in his late 80’s. He often mentioned that he was older than most of the people to whom they delivered meals.
Dr. Bagby was preceded in death by his parents, his brother James Willis Bagby Jr, and his sisters, Virginia Adams Bagby, Lucile Bagby Elliott and adopted grandson Brian Rollo. He is survived by his wife, June S Bagby, his sister, Betty Bagby Chester, and twin brother Robert Ward Bagby. Also surviving are his children Robin Bagby, William Bagby Jr. and wife Luciana, Jennifer Bagby and husband Jeff Allen, John Hampton Bagby, and adopted son Michael B. Richardson and wife Leslie.
His surviving grandchildren are Kinsey Diomedi, Liila Bagby, Jennifer Bagby, Wesley Bagby, and Victoria Bagby. John Allen, Annie Allen, Andrea Bagby, Corey Richardson, Sarah Raulerson and Jeremy Rollo. Ruby Joy Bagby is Bill and June’s great grand-daughter.
Due to Covid restrictions, a Celebration of his Life will be planned in the late summer or fall of 2021. We wish to ask that anyone with a story or memory of Dad send a card to June relating such story. Our family wishes to publicly thank Dr. David Kimmel for being Bill and June’s family physician and friend for the last 23 years.
A friend wrote: “Your dad did indeed live a wonderful life. Born in a time of prosperity, raised in a time of a great depression, served in a world war, built a professional career, and shepherded a family through many years of life. He was truly a man of the 20th century. He lived over 95 years, 72 of them with one woman, his wife, June. He helped in raising four children to productive lives. And he died at a ripe old age, full of years, riches, and honor. Your dad, Bill Bagby, was a good human being, even tempered and exhibiting a pragmatic humanism in his relations to his fellow man. He had a great time living, and now he is, no doubt, having a great time in heaven.”
He will be missed.

The Family of William R Bagby (Doc, Bill) wishes to invite you to a Celebration of his Life.

The celebration will take place at Crossnore Presbyterian Church, in Crossnore, NC from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on July 24. All friends and neighbors are invited to attend to share stories, thoughts and remembrances about Bill, who passed on Jan 26, 2021. The family kindly asks that if you have not been vaccinated for Covid 19 that you please wear a mask, but please still come.
Bagby, Dr. William Robinson (I84894)

6733 Obituary for DR. BOONEY VANCE
Dr. Hubert "Booney" Vance Jr. died with dignity on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 after a short but valiant fight against idiopathic cardiomyopathy. Dr. Vance was born in Johnson City, Tennessee on November 27, 1941. He is preceded in death by his mother (Mildred Barnett Vance), and by his father (Hubert Robert Vance Sr.). He leaves his immediate family, loving wife Sandra Barlow Vance, daughter Shannon Vance Harris and son-in-law Paul Harris, and granddaughter Olivia Vance; daughter Megan Vance and granddaughter Sarah Vance, all of Johnson City. Also he leaves his three brothers and sisters-in-law Jerry Vance (wife Penny) of Hopewell, Virginia, Carroll Vance (wife Michele) of New Brighton, Minnesota, and Donald Vance (wife Theresa) of Johnson City. In addition, he leaves scores of close friends and family with whom he had deep and meaningful relationships.

Booney was a friend and role model, scholar and teacher, and an athlete. Seldom has one person touched so many lives in unforgettable ways. He was the epitome of a true friend. One could always rely upon him for an ear of genuine concern, and strong and lasting support. His circle encompassed diversity from throughout the world. His unbridled enthusiasm, warm personality and matchless humor brightened the darkest room. Always the optimist, "can't" was not part of his vocabulary. His goal was to improve the life of those around him. Those who Booney touched continue on with a hole in their heart, but we are blessed because he was a part of our life's journey.

Dr. Vance was a remarkable teacher. Although he had a learning disability, his character, drive and will led him to obtain a PH.D. in Educational Psychology from The Ohio State University. While he taught at several universities, his heart was always tied to East Tennessee State University, his undergraduate alma mater. For the last several years, Booney has served ETSU and the Quillen College of Medicine as a professor in learning disorders and care of dementia disabled adults. He was a world-renowned scholar, leader, and speaker on childhood learning disorders and more recently care of disabled adults. His striking number of peer reviewed journal articles, books, and speaking invitations attest to his stature and influence. His legacy in novel approaches for treatment of learning disabilities and dementia will live in the physicians and students with whom he had contact.

Equally important to him was his service to Sinking Creek Baptist Church as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. His God was always in his classroom and in his life. Never was he in doubt about God's love for all of us whatever our station in life. The beacon of education has been brightened by his life, and the influence he had upon his classes.

In his life and in death, Booney was a competitor. He was a gifted athlete earning the Science Hill PlowBoy award in 1964. He attended the University of South Carolina and East Tennessee State University on football scholarships, playing a hard-hitting defensive back. Booney was an excellent fisherman. He taught his brothers, Donald and Carroll, the fundamentals of trout and bass fishing, but he never let them catch more than him. He was a life-long jogger, exercising up until the last twelve weeks of his life.

We were truly blessed to have Booney with us. He enriched our lives; made us better people, graced us with laughter, and showed us God's way. He taught us how to live and how to die. He was truly a child of God.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses of the Johnson City Medical Center and the Vanderbilt Coronary Unit for all the care and support given.

Memorial services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at Sinking Creek Baptist Church. Pastor Reece Harris will preside. Family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Church and a meal reception will be held at the Family Life Center following the service. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny and Janet Jones, Mike Ponder, Fred Stewart, Paul Harris, Booney Vance Sunday School Class, Bill Perry, Tony Katras, Jerry Robertson, Jack Cox, C.B. Kinch, Broad Lett, Mike and Sara Sellers, Ali Al-Gavatli, Stewart Leicht, Brian Mohney, Herman Tipton, Roland Henderson, Sam Humphreys, Steve Smith, Curt Koffman, and Rusty Crowe. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Sinking Creek Baptist Church or to the West Carter County Volunteer Fire Department, 2313 Elizabethton Highway, Johnson City, TN 37601.
