6351 MRS. E. ESTEP, 51, DIES AT HOME
Mrs. Eugene Estep, 51, past councilor of the Carnation Council, D. of A. and a prominent Eastern Star member and church worker, died at her home, two miles from this city, Wednesday afternoon after a prolonged illness.
Mrs. Estep, for many years was a resident of the city and was one of the most beloved women in this section, creating friends wherever she contacted anyone. Aside from being affiliated prominently with Carnation Council, No. 55, Daughters of America and the Sycamore Chapter, No. 163, O.E.S., she was identified with the Christian church, of which she was one of its more active and influential members. For several years prior to her illness, she was also active in Parent-Teacher work.
A woman of high ideals, she put forth her best efforts in making this world a better place to live.
Born in Wilkes County, North Carolina on March 4, 1884, she and her mother, Mrs. Ruby Dison, moved to Elizabethton following the death of her father, George Dison, when she was only seven years of age. On July 22, 1901, she married Eugene Estep.
Funeral services will be held from the First Christian Church Thursday at two o'clock with [illegible name] in charge, assisted by Rev. James Stout. Interment will be made in the Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be in charge of Luther Hampton.
The Eastern Star will use their ritualistic service at the church, followed by the ritualistic service of the Daughters of America at the cemetery.
Active pallbearers will include Cecil Cole, Jim Grindstaff, Joe Grindstaff, Rob Roe, Nat Birchfield, D. M. Mettler, Billy Fair, and Bob Wooten.
Honorary pallbearers will include John Northern, Rev. James Stout, Major C. R. Hathaway, Alvin Kyte, Luther Arnold, Lon Brumit, A. M. Avers, and F. E. Ogle.
Flower bearers will include members of the Daughters of America.
Surviving are the husband, Eugene Estep; four sons, Claude, Frank and Ray Estep, Elizabethton, Milton Estep, Detroit, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Zella Crowe, Elizabethton, Mrs. Gav Miller, St. Louis, Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Healen[sic] and Mrs. Helen Stuart, St. Charles, Va., and Mrs. Mae Hyder, Crossville, Tenn.; also 13 grandchildren.
The body has been removed to the home of her son, Frank Estep, Holly Street.

6352 Mrs. E.H. Bowers, 64, died at 1:20 pm Monday at a Kingsport hospital after several months illness. Her home was at Jonesboro, Route 5 on the Johson City-Kingsport Highway. She was born in Hampton, and had lived in Kingsport and Washington County for 33 years. She was a member of Grandview Chapter 441 of Eastern Star and was a Gold Star Mother. He son Lt. Wayne H. Bowers died in World War II. Survivors are her husband, E.H. Bowers, Route 5, Jonesboro; two daughters, Mrs. Logan G. Flanary, Kingsport; Mrs. Philip B. Hardymon, Columbus, Ohio; one son, Capt. James B. Bowers, with the U.S. Air Force in Japan; four sisters: Mrs. Laura Bowers, Elizabethton; Mrs. Nan Smith, Hampton; Mrs. Bertha Nichols, Johnson City; one brother, Mike Peters of Indiana. The body will remain in the Hamlett-Dodson Furneral Home in Kingsport where funeral arrangements will be announced later. Funeral services for Mrs. E.H. Bowers will be conducted at 3 pm Wednesday from the First Christian Church, Kingsport, with Dr. L. Palmer Young officiating assisted by Dr. Clyde Smith of the Central Christian Church of Bristol. 6353 Mrs. Edith Francis Simerly, of Elizabethton, passed away on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. She was born in Carter County and was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Arnett and Annie Jane "Jennie" Peters Arnett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl "Jay" Simerly, Jr. (March 1999); two sons, Bradley Dale Simerly (April 1957) and Danny Ross Simerly (October 2001); three brothers, John Albert Arnett, Rev. Thomas Arnett and

Rev. Nathanial "Nat" Arnett; two sisters, Blanche Guinn and Kathryn Holtsclaw.

Mrs. Simerly retired as a nurse's aide at Ivy Hall Nursing Home and was the last surviving member of her family and the oldest member of Sunrise Free Will Baptist Church in Roan Mountain.

Survivors include three sons, Rev. Allen Simerly and his wife Judy, Hampton;

Leroy Simerly and his wife Debra, Hickory, NC; Teddy Simerly and his wife Debra, Hampton; four daughters, Melva Doris King, Sumter, SC; Judy Guinn and her husband Darrell, Elizabethton; Janie Guinn and her husband Harlan, Hampton;

Jill Stanberry and her husband Roy, Elizabethton; two special daughters-in-law, Janice Simerly, Hampton and Peggy Murphy, Taylorsville, NC; nineteen grandchildren, Billy Jack Estep, Scott Estep, Andrew Estep, Timothy Simerly, Rebecca Blevins, Priscilla Pearce, Tammy Trent, Todd Simerly, Jamie Simerly, Christine Sigmon, Travis Simerly, Jessie Simerly, Danny Ray Simerly, Jennifer Combs, Jill Markland, Toby Guinn, Randy Guinn, Shannon Ford and Amy Whitson; and seventeen great grandchildren. Mrs. Simerly was known by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as "Ole-Granny." She is also survived by her special nieces and nephews including, Dorothy Forbes, Myrtle Elliott, Charlene Drown, Thelma Jo Breedlove, Darlene Mynatt, Gail Carroll, Veronia Campbell, Cheryl Moore, Otis and Sandy Guinn, Roy Jack Arnett, Billy Howard, Margaret Simerly and Sarah Carr; special sisters-in-law, Betty Taylor and her husband Norman, Jonesborough, Ruby Sloope and her husband Tony, Taylorsville, NC; Gladys Blevins, Roan Mountain and Billie Birchfield, California; special friends, Sherry Peters, Lynn and Kelly Bowers, Dexter and Mandy Blevins, Pastor Alan King, John Whitson, Richard and Janet Isaacs, Stella Francis, Hazel Francis, Daisie Strasinger and Pauline Hill.

The funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, March 20th in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Allen Simerly and Rev. Alan King officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 pm prior to the service in the chapel.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 am on Wednesday, March 21st in the John Whitehead Cemetery, Hampton. Active pallbearers will be Mrs. Simerly's grandsons, Billy Jack Estep, Scott Estep, Andrew Estep, Toby Guinn, Randy Guinn, Timothy Simerly, Todd Simerly, Jamie Simerly, Travis Simerly, Jessie Simerly and Danny Simerly. Honorary pallbearers will be Tyrone and Linda Powell, Johnny and Fredia Hill, Bruce Hill, Tim Holtsclaw, Ronnie Holtsclaw, Chris Holtsclaw and Ray Vance. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 10:50 am on Wednesday.

The family would like to extend a special thank-you to the Carter County Rescue Squad, Sycamore Shoals Hospital Emergency Room and Staff, Dr. Ahmed Khan, Dr. Sheryl Pack, the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital ICU Doctors and Staff, Eric Trivette and the Carter County Sheriff's Department.

6354 Mrs. Edna "Louise" Cordell, 86, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her family on Friday, February 9, 2018. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and she loved all her friends at the Waters of Roan Highlands Nursing Home as much as they all loved her.
A native of Roan Mountain, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Ben and Florence Julian Ashley. Mrs. Cordell was a member of Upper Shell Creek Christian Church. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. She loved playing bingo, gardening and growing flowers, crafts and puzzles.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Marshall T. Cordell; a great-grandson, Kasey Hicks; two brothers, James Ashley and Tommy Ashley; two infant brothers, Bobby Jack Ashley and Billy Joe Ashley; and a dear friend, Ester Lester.
Those left to cherish her memory include a son, Ken Cordell and wife Vivian, Roan Mountain; daughters, Patricia Glenn and husband John, Marion, N.C., Karen Carpenter and husband Charles, Lansing, N.C., Sharon Jackson and husband Steve, Johnson City, and Heather Porch and husband J.R., Foscoe, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; brothers, J.S. Ashley, Roan Mountain, Gene Ashley, Roan Mountain, Norman Ashley, Elizabethton, Roger Ashley, Roan Mountain, and Chuck Ashley, Roan Mountain; and a brother-in-law, Larry Miller, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Mrs. Edna "Louise" Cordell will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, February 12, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1 until 2 p.m. Monday, prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow the service in the Johnson Roanview Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Bret Hicks, Brody Shell, Luke Cordell, Cory Hicks, Dalton Porch and Chase Benett.

6355 Mrs. Edna Minks Leonard, age 91, of Jonesborough, passed away Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at her residence.

Mrs. Leonard was a native of Johnson County. She was the daughter of the late Ross M. Minks and Ida Heck Minks. In addition to her parents, her husband, Linkes J. Leonard; one brother, James E. Minks; also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Leonard was a homemaker. She was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include two sisters, Nina Lee Green and Ella M. Minks; several nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Mrs. Edna Minks Leonard will be conducted at 2 PM Friday, April 5, 2013, in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Pastor Lon Tobin will officiate.

The graveside committal service will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be nephews.

6356 Mrs. Edna Von Cannon Potter, Roan Mountain, TN went to meet her beloved husband in heaven on Friday, October 23, 2015 from the Roan Highland Nursing Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Janie Miller Von Cannon. She was proud to be a graduate of East Tennessee State University and the many things her education enabled her to accomplish in her community. Edna Von Cannon Potter taught in the Carter County School System for forty-two years. Upon her retirement, she was teaching fourth grade at Cloudland Elementary School in Roan Mountain, TN. Edna married her husband James W. Potter, who was a high school principal for forty-four years. They resided in Roan Mountain, TN and were happily married for sixty-three years before Mr. Potter went home to be with the Lord in 2002.
The Potters were active in the Roan Mountain Naturalists Rally and Wildflower Tours since their inception forty-six years ago. The Potters took part in the first organized meeting to plan the annual event with Fred Behrend, a noted and beloved naturalist from Elizabethton, TN. During the 2003, Fall Roan Mountain Naturalist’s Rally, an award of excellence was developed by the Friends of Roan Mountain. The James and Edna Potter Conservation Award was created to honor those who support, in the highest standards, the mission of the Friends group. This award was created to honor their work and those who follow in their footsteps. Edna received the honor of being selected as “Tennessee’s Conservation Educator of the Year” in 1976 and was overjoyed when she was also selected “Teacher of the Year.” She was also a member of the Roan Mountain Garden Club.
The Potters organized the “Miss Watauga Valley” pageant, a preliminary to the “Miss Tennessee” pageant. In June of 1996 the Potters received recognition at the Miss Tennessee Pageant for having over fifty years of pageant service. In addition, Edna worked from the very beginning with the “Miss Rhododendron” pageant in Roan Mountain. Edna is also very active in her church as a member of the Elk Park Christian Church. She served as secretary, treasurer and historian of the Mountain Christian Churches Annual Convention for a number of years.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. Potter was preceded in death by a brother, Denver Von Cannon. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and David Williams, Surgoinsville, TN; three granddaughters, Judith Ann Williams, Surgoinsville, TN, Robin Vess and husband Josh, Dandridge, TN and Sonya Williams, Knoxville, TN; a great-granddaughter, Skylar Vess, Dandridge, TN and two sisters, Bonnie Prince and Ann Griffith, both of Bluff City, TN. Several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Gladys Winters, Elk Park, NC also survive.
A service to honor the life of Mrs. Edna Von Cannon Potter will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, October 27, 2015 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Dr. Robert Wetzel, Mr. Palma Bennett, Mr. Gerald Holly, and Mr. Grant Foster, ministers officiating. Music will be under the direction of Faye Mayberry. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday prior to the funeral service.
Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, October 28, 2015 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Ted Hughes, Dallas Williams, W. O. Hampton, Farrell Ollis and her Church Family.

6357 Mrs. Eliza Jane Hyder, age 62, of the Gap Creek community, passed away suddenly last night at 7:20 o'clock in a car while on her way to the home of her son, Brown Hyder, where she has made her home. She was returning from a visit with her daughter, Mrs. Luther Hill.
Mrs. Hyder was been in failing health for the past year. She was born 16Sep1881 at Gap Creek & had lived in that community all her life. Her husband preceded her in death several years ago.
She was a member of the Zion Baptist church at Gap Creek.
Survivors are 6 daughters, Mrs. Earnest Allison of Johnson City; Mrs. Romney Blevins of Elizabethton; Mrs. Reva Smith, Mrs. Luther Hill, Mrs. James Britt, of Gap Creek; & Mrs. Orville Markland of Milligan; 3 sons, Pvt. Brown Hyder, of Camp Chaffee, AR; Vance Hyder of Gap Creek & Albert yder of Johnson City; 1 sister, Mrs. Martha Emert of Gap Creek; 4 brothers, Will & Nat Dugger of Elizabethton; & James & Jett Dugger of Gap Creek; & 14 grandchildren.

6358 Mrs. Elizabeth Rains Ramey, 88, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at her residence. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late David P. and Ellen Forbes Rains.
Elizabeth had worked as an administration assistant in the Supervisor's Office for the Elizabethton City School System. She was a member of First Christian Church of Elizabethton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everette "Buddy" Ramey; two sisters, Mary Maples and Florence Songer; and a brother, Lawrence "Bud" Rains.
Those left to cherish her memory include a son, Timothy "Tim" Ramey and his wife Sheri, Nashville, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Jessica LeeAnn Cloutier and husband Joshua, Elizabethton; great-grandsons, Mason Wilson, Maddux Wilson and Gavin Cloutier, all of Elizabethton, and Kaelin Howe, Nashville; a sister, Frances Sherwood and her husband Bobby, Elizabethton; and nephews, David Sherwood and wife Melissa of North Carolina and Christopher Songer and wife Mila of Kentucky.
A private graveside service for Mrs. Elizabeth Rains Ramey was held at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

6359 MRS. ELLA GENTRY... 71, wife of J. A. Gentry, died at her home the morning of March 14 after a long illness. She was a member of the Liberty Christian Church.
She is survived by her husband and the following children: Selmer of Wooster, O.; Wade, Emory, Gayther, Dale and Thurmond of Mountain City; Mrs. Mina Ellison of Todd, N.C.;. six brothers, Dave, Charley, Fred, Pete, and Don Smith, all of Mountain City.
Funeral was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the home. Rev. R. T. Mabry was incharge.
Pallbearers and flower bearers were nieces and nephews.
Burial followed in Phillippi cemetery.

6360 Mrs. Ella L. Cochran, 86, of Beaverton, died Friday, Nov. 14, at the Clare Osteopathic Hospital following an illness of one month. Born in Jasper on April 19, 1883, she had resided in Gladwin County for the past 68 years. Mrs. Cochran was a life member of the Beaverton O.E.S. No. 386 and the Dale Billings Ladies Aid.
The former Ella Skinner, she was married to Robert B. Cochran on June 19, 1902, in Jasper. He preceded her in death on May 7, 1957. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Velma McKimmy, of Beaverton and Mrs. Goldie Colbeck, of Saginaw; three grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
Rites were held Monday at 1 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home. The Rev. A.H. Keesler officiated and burial was in the Dale Cemetery. Gladwin County Record dated 11-12/1969 Column - 7 Page - 1

6361 Mrs. Emma Sanders Pennell, 86, of Zionville, widow of Edward F. Pennell, died Friday morning, September 28 at Caldwell County Hospice in Lenoir.

She was born April 6, 1904, daughter of John and Della Wilson Sanders. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, three sons, one sister, one brother, 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, two brothers, and four sisters.

Services were conducted Monday afternoon at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Officiating ere the Reverends Jerry Smith and Herbert McCoy. Burial was in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

6362 Mrs. Erleen D. McGuire Church, 96, 1705 Dark Ridge Road, Elk Park, N.C., went home to be with her Lord, Friday, Nov. 23, 2007 at her residence following an extended illness.
A native of Avery County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late George Washington McGuire, Jr. and Alice Trivette McGuire.

Mrs. Church was a member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Bemberg Corporation and a homemaker. She enjoyed researching genealogy, gardening and flowers.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, four grandchildren and spouses, four great-grandchildren; two sisters. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Truman Church, on April 12, 1990; five brothers; three sisters; two half-brothers and two half-sisters.
Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 26, 2007 at Beech Mountain Baptist Church, Elk Park, N.C. with the Rev. Dennis Church and the Rev. James Hagaman officiating. Interment will follow in the Beech Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorials donations may be made to Beech Mountain Baptist Church, c/o of Wilma Storey, 186 Buckeye Road, Elk Park, N.C. 28622. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Charles Sykes for all the love and care shown to Mrs. Church through the many years.

6363 Mrs. Estella Coffey Barnes, 87, of Route 2, Boone, died Wednesday morning, Nov.27, at her home.

Mrs. Barnes was born Aug. 1, 1898 in Watauga County to Dell Calvin and Mary Jane Bodenhamer. She was the wife of the late Stewart James Barnes. Mrs. Barnes was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and had attended the Perkinsville Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for a number of years. She was employed for many years as the first secretary of the Appalachian Normal School, which later became Appalachian State University. She was a long time hand-weaving crafts person and was a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild.

Surviving are three daughters, one son, one sister, three brothers, and 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted today at 2 p.m. at the Perkinsville Baptist Church. Burial followed at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

6364 Mrs. Esther Sparks Ledford, 91, 805 First Street, Elizabethton, died Wednesday, September 23,1998, at the residence of a daughter and son-in-law, Margaret and Norris Hamm, 7112 Glenfield Lane, Chattanooga, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Ledford was a native of Bakersville, N.C., and a daughter of the late John and Minnie Sparks. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ransom Ledford, in 1973; a son, Ransom Ledford., in 1946; five brothers; a sister; and a daughter-in-law, Bernice Ledford.
Mrs. Ledford had lived most of her life in Elizabethton before going to Chattanooga three years ago. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church of Elizabethton.
Other survivors include another daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Quentin Richardson, 1222 Thomas Thomas Blvd., Elizabethton; a son, Harlan Ledford, Boone, N.C.; and three sisters, Mrs. Edna Masters, Erwin, Mrs. Bonnie Byrd, Bakersville, N.C., and Mrs. Mae Burleson of Arizona. Five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren also survive. Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

6365 Mrs. Ethel Chambers Johnson, 84, Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, November 11, 2008, at her residence.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Winfield A. and Delia Arnett Chambers. Ethel was a graduate of Elizabethton High School, where she played on the girls' basketball team. She retired from Beaunit Fibers.

She was a member of the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church, where she was a member of the ladies Sunday School Class and the Adult Choir.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Montie S. Johnson Sr., February 1990; four sisters: Cornthia Chambers, Laura Suess, Viola Stevens and Lillie Johnson; and three brothers: Howard Dugger, Ray Chambers and J.N. Chambers.

Survivors include a son & daughter-in-law: Shannon & Pam Johnson, Elizabethton; A daughter and fiancé, Sharon Culler and Tim Timbs, Elizabethton; Five Grandchildren: Curtis and his wife, Hillary Johnson, and Christie Johnson, all of Denver, Colorado, Nicholas, Kala and Kelli Culler, Elizabethton; Two Great Grandchildren: Connor Johnson and Reece Culler and Mother, Amy Peters; One Sister: June Ellis Telleen, Elizabethton; One Sister-in-Law: Betty Lou Chambers, Elizabethton; And one very special friend and neighbor, Frankie Woodby.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Johnson officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Johnson Family Cemetery, Mill Pond Road. Music will be provided by the Praise Choir, Ben Johnson and Pat Ray.

Active Pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the church at 6:55 p.m. Thursday and also at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Friday, will be: Carl Roberson, Joel Elijah, Larry McKinney, Sam Harrison, Sam Ellis, Bobbie Collins and Bobby McGee. Honorary Pallbearers will be Buck Johnson, Steve Chambers, Tim Chambers, Mark Smith, Dennis Ellis, Jeff Stout, Joel Kress, Phillip Suess, Leroy Johnson, Dusty Woodby, Wesley Woodby, Phil Carpenter, Eric Stephens, Jimmy Stevens and her church family.

Her special friends include: Connie and Jackie Roberts, Betty Jo and George Green Jr., Melody Carpenter, Dottie Stout, Suzanne Berry, Judy Hatley, Elaine Smith, Shelia Ellis, Linda Hopson, Dr. Vivian Clark and Judy Deloach.

6366 Mrs. Ethel Pierce Hinkle, 84, of 1111 Broad Street, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, December 12, 2008, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.

Mrs. Hinkle was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Ollie Collins and Lula White Pierce. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Hinkle; by an infant son; by one brother, Spencer Pierce; and by four sisters, Shirley Pierce, Lena Ward, Marie Smith and Dorothy Lee.

Mrs. Hinkle was retired from American Bemberg Corp. with 32 years of service. She was a member of Pierce Baptist Church and had attended Union Baptist Church. She loved her church and her family.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Eddie and Randy Lewis, Elizabethton; one granddaughter, Jessica Brooke Lindsey, Johnson City; one brother, Haskell Pierce, Butler; several nieces and nephews; her special companion, Cody Lewis; and her many friends.

The funeral service for Ethel Pierce Hinkle will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Monday, December 15, 2008, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Rev Harvey White and Rev. Pete Pollard officiating.

Mrs. Estep was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Sherman and Pearl Asher Estep. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, John Estep and Walter Estep, and a sister, Eller Estep. Mrs. Estep was a textile worker and was a Free Will Baptist.

Mrs. Harmon was a member of Piney Grove Church of Christ. She cooked for Meals on Wheels of Avery County and was a long time volunteer at the Beech Mountain Elementary School.

6370 Mrs. Eulah B. “Sweetie” Mottern, age 92, of Watauga, TN passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at her residence following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late James Bradley and Ruth Kate Watkins Shepherd. “Sweetie” was a librarian for nineteen years with the Carter County School System and retired after twelve years with the Sullivan County School System at Bluff City Middle School. She was a member of the Eastern Star, Sycamore Chapter 163 for fifty years; was a life member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War and a member of the Sullivan County Retired Teachers Association.

Mrs. Mottern was a member of Brick Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William E. “Sonny” Mottern; three sisters, Sallie Kate Thompson, Billie Jo Haws, Grace Pearl Shepherd and a brother, Frank Shepherd.

Survivors include a son Sonnie Bill Mottern and wife Shelby, Bluff City, TN; a daughter, Ruth Lewis, Watauga; four grandchildren, Michelle Mottern, FL, Eddie Lewis, FL, Brad Mottern and wife Tonya, Johnson City and Carrie Brandt and husband Vernon, Bluff City; five great-grandchildren, Taylor Mottern, Blaise Kessler, Lukas Kessler, Piper Kessler and Rayanna Brandt; a great-great-granddaughter, Taylor Thurman and a great-great-great-granddaughter, Mackenzie Thurman. Mrs. Oliver was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Oliver, April 28, 1989; by two sons, James and Paul Oliver; three daughters, Elsie Arnold, Marie Oliver, and Ruth Oliver; three brothers, Caleb, Ambers, and Charles; three sisters, Sarah, Onie, and Pearl, and three grandchildren.

She was born in Watauga County, March 21, 1912. She was a homemaker and served as a nurse in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Suvivors include a daughter, Patti Bowers and husband, David, of Newland, N.C.; and two sisters, Mrs. Mona Norris of Advance, N.C., and Mrs. Mary Moretz of Clinton, Tenn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Burke.

6377 Mrs. Florence Parlier Cook, 89, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019, at her home in Winston-Salem.

She was born Nov. 7, 1929, in beautiful Beech Mountain, NC. She was preceded in death by her Parents: Joseph and Sarah Parlier; six Brothers: Cluster, Finley, Spurgeon, Elliott, Sanford and twin Lawrence, and a Sister: Irene. Mrs. Cook was a member of Rosemont Baptist Church and loved her family. She and Bill raised their children in church teaching them to trust Jesus for all things. Everyone was blessed by knowing her. Through the years, she became Mom to many that had lost their mother. She will be missed. The family wants to thank Dr. Stephen Hux and his staff at Arcadia Family Practice for 30 years of attentive and genuine care.


Surviving are her Husband of 70 years: Bill Cook; her Children: Larry Cook (Wanda), Kathy Chapman (Donnie), Connie Miller (Gordon), Karen Lanier (Phil) and Pam McDowell; her Grandchildren: Barry, Dawn, Teressa, Matthew, Wendy, Nick, Brad, Amy, Sarah and Grace; 14 Great grandchildren; two Sisters: Cozie and Lue. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Pastor Mark Reed and Gordon Miller officiating. The family received friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. A private family graveside service was held at Parklawn Memorial Park.

She was born October 6, 1938 in the Bethel community of Watauga County, a daughter of Melvin and Georgia Walker Millsaps.

Mrs. Arnold was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She was a licensed practical nurse at Blackwelder Hospital in Lenoir for 28 years and returned to Watauga County to work at Glenstone Nursing Home, now Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation where she worked for 17 years.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years, Jady Charles Arnold, her mother-in-law, a sister-in-law, two nephews, one niece, three aunts, and one uncle.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Georgia Walker Millsaps. one son, Freddie Charles Arnold two brothers, Charles and Jack MIllsaps and two sisters, Lucille and Juanita Millsaps.

Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Bethel Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Dan Rosser and Rev, Burl Greer. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Millsaps Family Cemetery.

She was of the Presbyterian faith.
Mrs. Harvey was the Executive Secretary for the local Selective Service Board and retired from the Administrative Board of the Selective
Service of Tennessee.

A native of Beech Mountain, Avery County, NC she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Emma Jones Storie.

Mrs. Potter was a homemaker, did income tax returns, was a seamstress and a very good cook. She was a member of High Point Baptist Church. She loved to read, garden and help others.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jess Stewart Potter; a grandson, Michael "Mikie" Thompson, three sisters, Mabel Storie, Dessa Mae Harrison and Laura Jean Storie and five brothers, Edward, Dennis, Ronald, Billy Ray and James "Jim" Storie.

Those left to cherish her memory include a son, Brookie Potter and wife Jean; two daughters, Lisa Williams and husband Greg and Linda Potter and her husband Mike "Turtle" Thompson; thirteen grandchildren, Charles Potter, Tracey Perez, Teresa England, Amanda Ward, Brittney Odom, Caitlin Odom, Cassidy Potter, Jesse Potter and Brandi Thompson; thirteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Leslie Storie and two sisters, Kate Harrison and Norma Potter. 6383 Mrs. Fred Love sent the Census for 1840 from Davidson Co. Civil Destrict, , TN,p351, showing Benjamin with one male 5-10, one 15-20, one 40-50; one female under 5 , one 5-10, two 10-15, one female 30-40. William Benjamin would be the male 5-10, unknown 15-20, female under five Sarah, Levisa 5-10, Nancy and Lucy 10-15 and Teliza, 30-40. no slaves, and apparently no one attended school. Immediately above is a James Love 60-70 with 24 slaves.
Goodloe Chapel cemetery has no markers for Benjamin or his wife, but that is where they were buried, probably with a fieldstone to mark the site(s). There is a Confederate marker for Benjamin, but without dates.
Benjamin Love was awarded 160 acres in Van Buren County , AR, for his service in the War of 1812 on 26 Feb 1856. On 18 Jan 1861 William B. Love apparently the administrator for Benjamin Love deceased came into the Court for Van Buren County, AR, wanting to dispose of the land warrant issued from the land office of the United States for one hundred and sixty acres #17267. The court accounts are hard to read, but the court said that the administrator has paid out fifteen hundred and forty five dollars and ninety six cents more than the assets in his hands. 12 April 1861 W. B. Love and Evan Harris present a petition asking to have their bond as administrators of said estate reinstated and asked the court to have a citation run against John J. Harton, James H. Shiply, George Crone and John Chandler to appear at the Courthouse in Clinton, Van Buren Co., AR on Thursday after the second Monday of July next, to show why the bond should not be reinstated.
His Bounty Land Warrant was 17267-160-55 based upon an act passed 28 September 1850 by Congress. He applied for this land on 13 December 1854 in Van Buren County before a Justice of the Peace, Squire Freeman. He said he had never before applied for bounty land. The application was sent to Clinton, the county seat of Van Buren County, where the clerk testified that Squire Freeman was a Justice of the Peace and sent the document on. On 21 April 1855 Benjamin Love appeared before Allanson Witt, another J.P. in Clinton with two witnesses, Jesse Day, and B. T. Arnold, who testified that he was indeed Benjamin Love.
He served from 29 June 1813-22 Sept 1813 and from 25 Sep 1814 to 20 Oct 1814. He served in " a company of Light Infantry commanded by Capt Rce B. Pearce, 65 Reg't Virginia Militia, attached to 35 Reg't U. S. Infantry, and marching 75 miles from Jerusalem, Southampton County, the place of regimental rendezvous, to Portsmouth and the same for returning. [Jerusalem is now called Courtlands, the county seat of Southampton County, VA]

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Abraham B. and Loretta Rachel Frazier Williams. Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Watauga Valley Free Will Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernie B. Lewis, July 12, 1991; by a daughter, Betty Jo Lewis, in 1933; a son, George McBernie Lewis, in 1947; by six brothers, Albert, Dewey, Lonnie, Rex, Ted and Harry Williams, and four sisters, Pearl Williams, Daisy Grindstaff, Ruby Nidiffer, and

6386 Mrs. Geraldine 'Jerri' Stanton, age 83, of Mountain City, Tennessee, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief but courageous battle. A native of Carter County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Clyde and Anna Pearson. In addition to her parents, Geraldine was preceded in death by her loving husband, Wayne Stanton, five brothers and five sisters-in-law: Dale Pearson, Howard Pearson and wife Helen, Edsel Pearson and wife Lucille, Earnest Pearson and wife Wanda, Douglas Pearson and wife Margie and Dorothy Pearson, wife of Jim Pearson.
Geraldine was a longtime member of Bakers Gap Baptist Church and loved her church family dearly. The youth at the church held a special place in her heart.
Geraldine was known by family and friends as 'Jerri'. She loved to spend time with her family and church family. She also loved to cook, sew and work in the garden.
Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Missy Stanton of Elizabethton, TN; son and special daughter-in-law, Larry and Dawn Stanton of Mountain City, TN; brother, Jim 'Paul' Pearson of Elizabethton, TN; several nieces and nephews; a dear lifelong friend, Bernice Whaley, and her church family.
A celebration of life service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 29, 2016 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with her friend and Pastor, Dennis Peterson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-7:00 p.m. prior to the service.

She was the daughter of the late John and Ira Vines Henson and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harrell Henson.

Mrs. Stewart was a graduate Hampton High School. She and her husband were the owners and operators of David's New and Used Merchandise.

She is survived by her husband, David L. Stewart, of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Sheila Ward, Fort Walton Beach, FL; a daughter and son-in-law, April and Tony Tunyavongs, Washington, DC; three grandchildren, Emily Ward, Dustin Glover, Nolan Tunyavongs; a brother, Charles E. A native of Butler, TN she was the daughter of the late George and Agnes Greer Lyons. She retired as an office worker from TN Eastman.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Norton and a great-grandson, Jonathan Woodby.

Survivors include a daughter, Wilma Perkins and husband Dan and a son, Terry Woodby, all of Elizabethton; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren and two sisters, Della Driscoll, Elizabethton and Dorothy Hopson, Big Stone Gap, VA. She was born Jan. 4, 1944, in Banner Elk, Avery County, to Mary Alice Tester Presnell and the late David Gold Presnell.

Mrs. Hicks was an In-Home aide with the Avery County Health System CAP program for the past 14 years. She was a former nursing assistant at Watauga Medical Center and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond Hicks; two sons, Robert Hicks and wife, Rhonda, of Gatlinburg, Tenn. and Mikeal Hicks of Elk Park; one daughter, Nita Wilcox and husband, Bill, of Vilas; four grandsons, Matthew Hicks of Elk Park, Luke Wilcox of Vilas, Jake Hicks and Kevin Hicks, both of Gatlinburg, Tenn.; her mother, Mary Alice Presnell Peterson of Sugar Grove; one sister, Ruby Hagaman and husband, Jimmie, of Sugar Grove; one brother, Roy Presnell of Boone; three nephews, David Hagaman of Salisbury, Roy Presnell and Randall Presnell, both of Sugar Grove; and one niece, Donna Townsend of Boone.

She was preceded in death by a niece, Patricia Ann Hagaman.

Mrs. Joseph was an employee of Gateway Cleaners and a member of Asbury Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, Horace and Kate Bowers, a brother, Carl Bowers, and a sister, Ruth Taylor.

6391 Mrs. Grace Lucille Williams Neatherly, 83, of Morganton, N.C., died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2006, at Autumn Care of Drexel.

She was born in Watauga County, on March 19, 1922, a daughter of the late Roy H. Williams, Sr. and Mattie Sue Isaacs Williams.

Mrs. Neatherly was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America and was active in many leadership roles for the Catawba Valley Service Unit. She received the "Thanks Badge" from the Girl Scouts. She was a member of the Glen Alpine Woman's Club, the Morganton Garden Club, the Morganton Herb Club, and the Oak Hill Home Extension Club. Mrs. Neatherly was actively involved with A.A.R.P. and was one of the original volunteer ushers with the City of Morganton Municipal Auditorium.

She was a member of Mountain Grove United Methodist Church where she served on various committees and offices. She was an avid supporter of her husband's work with Ruritan International at both the local and national level. Mrs. Neatherly was a tireless gardener and herbalist, and a skilled craftswoman and artist who especially enjoyed flower arranging, painting, wreath making, and embroidery. She had volunteered for many years as a flower judge at the Burke County Fair and had herself won many blue ribbons at the fair for her baked goods. During her husband's Air Force career, she was active in various N.C.O. wives clubs and service associations.

Survivors include her husband, U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt., Retired, Roy L. Neatherly; daughters, Constance Lee Neatherly Turner and husband, Rev. Charles M. Turner, Jr., of Lewisville, N.C.; Dawn Neatherly Byrd and husband, Gregory A. Byrd, of Morganton; a daughter-in-law, Judy C. Neatherly of Ninevah, Ind.; grandchildren, Charles M. Turner III, Christina M. Turner, Christopher L. Neatherly, Kerry N. Ritchie, and Daniel L. Mrs. Shoun was a Johnson County native and a daughter of the late Asa and Mary Morefield Ward. She had lived a number of years in Carter County.
Mrs. Shoun was a Baptist.
She was preceded in death by her husband, T. N. Shoun, in 1959; one son, two stepdaughters, four brothers, one sister, and two grandchildren.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Pauline Graham, Elizabethton; and six grandchildren, Pat Graham Lowe, Brenda Davis, Kay Moody, Hilda Graham, Joey Shoun and Randy Shoun; and several step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Hazel was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. She enjoyed canning, cooking, farming, gardening, reading her Bible and her church where she was a former Sunday School teacher. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Bill T. Branch; one daughter: Lola Arnold; and four sons: Wayne, David, Bobby and Franklin.

Survivors include: four daughters: Shirley Wagner of Butler TN; Barbara Campbell and husband Earl of mountain City, TN; Brenda Garland and husband Danny of Butler, TN; and Nancy Guinn and husband Hearly of Mountain City, TN; one son: Blaine Branch of Butler TN; twenty-one grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great- great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. 6395 Mrs. Hazel Estep Jackson, 97, passed away on July 8, 2013, at Christian Care Center, Johnson City.
Mrs. Jackson was born in Carden's Bluff, Hampton, TN. She was the daughter of James Wesley and Flossie White Estep. She lived in Johnson City for 42 years before moving to Kingsport, TN.
Mrs. Jackson retired from Beaunit Corporation, coning department, Elizabethton, TN, after 35 years of service.
She loved God, her church, family and hard work. She was a wonderful Christian mother and grandmother, through her many acts of kindness and thoughtfulness of others, she will be missed. She loved to quilt and cook, known for her fish fries and delicious cakes that she shared with others.
She was a member of Tri-Cities Gospel Assembly Church, now called Mercy Seat Church.
Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, James Sherman Jackson, in 1998; two sons, Harvey David Jackson Sr., Wane Ross Jackson Sr.; a granddaughter, Pamela Sue Jackson; four sisters, Dorris Estep, Madolin Ward, Ora White, Iva Holder; and two brothers, Stanley Estep and Carl Dean (Bill) Estep.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Hamilton, son-in-law, C. Dean Hamilton, daughters-in-law, Frances H. Jackson, Johnson City, and Ruby Jackson, Conway, Arkansas; sister Joyce Estep Deloach, Southampton, PA; a niece, Joyce Woodby and husband, CM Woodby; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; nine great, great grandchildren; and one great, great, great grandchild; several nieces and nephews also survive.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services, Johnson City.

6396 Mrs. Hazel G. Kinnick Hall, 94, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 19, 2019, at Ridge Rest Assisted Living Center in Columbus, N.C. Mrs. Hall was a native of Cranberry, N.C., and the daughter of John and Cora Sullivan Greer. She was also preceded in death by John Kinnick (husband), Fred Hall (husband) and sisters, Faye McGuire and China Wishon.
Since 1942, Mrs. Hall resided in Elizabethton, Tenn. It was there that she raised her daughters, Wanda Kinnick Manson and husband John of Tryon, N.C., Dianne Kinnick Jones and husband Johnie of Whitsett, N.C., and Jan Kinnick Bunce and husband John of Diamondhead, Miss. In addition, she was also blessed with four grandsons and their wives, David and Kim Meredith, Robin and Rachel Meredith, Matt and Kristi Jones, Jonathan and Jennifer Nave, and nine great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hall found her passion in a nursing career later in life. She worked as a head surgical nurse at Carter County Memorial Hospital, Elizabethton, Tenn., and retired from the Mountain Home Veteran's Administration, Johnson City, Tenn., after 25 years. She was a lifelong member of the Christian Church.
The family wishes to express a heartfelt thank you to Jessica Fitch, and the caring staff at Ridge Rest Assisted Living, along with special friend and Home Health Nurse, Kristen Holbert. Also, to Landrum United Methodist Church, and loving friends that have supported her through this journey.

Mrs. Winebarger was a member of Proffit's Grove Baptist Church.

She and her husband owned and operated a general merchandise store in the Meat Camp community for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Bessie Winebarger Proffit; her husband, John Dayton Winebarger; a son, Kenneth Winebarger; a daughter, Betty Winebarger Farthing; a great-granddaughter, Jennifer Shaw; and two sons-in-law, Arvil Miller and Van Farthing.

Burial followed at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late John and Rosa Kemp Tolley.
Mrs. Davis retired from the Coning Department at North American Rayon Corporation. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Shields A. Davis; three sons, Terry "Poon" Davis Sr., Wayne Davis Sr. and Kenneth Grindstaff; two grandsons, Wayne Davis Jr. and Terry Davis Jr.; and a brother, Clyde Tolley.

6399 Mrs. Helen "Mitzi" Toney, age 62, 134 Pinnacle Drive, Elizabethton, TN, passed away peacefully at her home Friday, October 25, 2013. A native of Washington County, TN, she was the daughter of the late John Jackson and Lethia Birchfield Cable.
She received a diploma from the TN College of Applied Technology as an Administrative Assistant. Mrs. Toney was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church and she was a member of the National Guard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Christine Cable, Shirley Heaton and Ivalee Briggs; and three brothers, Bill Cable, Junior Cable and Kenneth Cable. Survivors include her husband, James Toney, of the home; a daughter, Elizabeth Toney Jones and husband, Michael Todd Jones, Jonesborough, TN; and three grandchildren, Ariella Jones, Aaron Jones and Mary Beth Jones, all of Jonesborough, TN. Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday, October 29, 2013, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Todd Jones, Elizabeth Jones, James Toney, Mike Briggs, Mike Whitehead and Bill Barnett. Everyone will meet at Tetrick Funeral Home Elizabethton at 10:15 AM on Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery.

6400 Mrs. Helen C. Treadway, 85, Hermitage Health Care Center, formerly of Bradley Street, Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord, Jesus, and to join her husband Guy on Monday, February 09, 2009, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.

Mrs. Treadway was the daughter of the late Henry and Kate Scalf Russell and was a native of Carter County. In addition to her parents and her husband, Guy Treadway who passed away on June 4, 1999, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Luther Russell, Hurbert Russell and Robert Russell.

Mrs. Treadway was a member of Charity Hill Freewill Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Bemberg and was a homemaker. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and a caring sister. She always put her family before herself.

She is survived by five daughters; Brenda Adams, her roommate at Hermitage Health Care; Doris Treadway, Elizabethton; Teresa Ballard and her husband Ray, Penny Sams and her husband, Johnny, Cathy Kent and her husband Ronald, all of Elizabethton; two sons, Larry Joe Treadway and his wife Donna, Watauga and Tom Treadway and his wife, Barbara, Johnson City; twelve grandchildren; fifteen grand-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and two sisters, Ethel Barnett, Lela Davis, Elizabethton; two brothers Bill Russell, Elizabethton and Harry Russell, Piney Flats. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mrs. Treadway will be conducted on Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at 7:00 PM in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with rev. Steve Burleson and Rev. Carl Grindstaff officiating. The family will receive friends in the chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM Wednesday prior to the service and at the home of a daughter, Teresa Ballard, 719 Sugar Hollow Road, Elizabethton at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Thursday, February 12, 2009, at 11:00 AM at Mountain Home National Cemetery, Mountain Home, Tennessee. Active pallbearers will be Jessie Treadway, Keith Treadway, Guy Sams, Tommy Sams Brandon Treadway, Bobby Ballard, Chris Sams, Mickey Campbell and Johnny Sams. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 AM Thursday to go in procession to the cemetery.
