6201 Mr. Cecil Maupin, 79, of Johnson City, passed away Monday, April 21, 2014, at his residence.

Mr. Maupin was a native of Watauga County, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Charles Ernest and Maymie Eggers Maupin.

Mr. Maupin retired from Bolton Block after fifty-four years of service. He was a member of the King Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Joshua Maupin; one great granddaughter, Carly Raiyne Nickles.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-seven years, Barbara Perry Maupin; four daughters, Kathy Brown and her husband Berney, Nancy Gardner and her husband RJ, Letha Jones and her husband Jeff, and Karen Williams and her husband Shona; five sons, Charles Cecil "Chummy" Maupin, Jr. and his wife Carol, Jimmy Maupin and his wife Beverly, Timmy Maupin and his wife Leanne, Kevin Maupin and his wife Tina, and Scotty Maupin and his wife Melissa; seven sisters, Bonnie Campbell and her husband George, Annie Maupin, Betty Ferguson and her husband Carl, Lillian Oliver and the late Wayne Oliver, Margie Barry and her husband James, Louise Thompson and her husband Richard, and Viola Verran and her friend Clayton Campbell; eighteen grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren.

The family would like to express a special thank you to Teresa, Nonie, and the Caris Health Care for all the wonderful care given to Mr. Maupin and his family.

The family of Mr. Cecil Maupin will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 PM Wednesday, April 23, 2014, in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 8:30 PM with Rev. Jerry Cornett officiating. The graveside committal service will be conducted at 11 AM Thursday, in the Roselawn Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

6202 Mr. Charles E. Lipford, 86, of Elizabethton, passed away on Friday, December 26, 2014 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.
He was the son of the late Jesse and Gladys Collins Lipford and was born in Carter County.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of forty-one years, Nora Grace Heaton Lipford on November 8, 2008; and a sister, Jo Lipford Smith.
Mr. Lipford was a graduate of Hampton High School, served in the United States Air Force as a radar technician during the Korean War, and graduated from East Tennessee State Teachers College. He taught algebra at Elizabethton High School and retired in 1987 after thirty years of service and was the first teacher in the Elizabethton City School System to be inducted into the Imagination Library Teacher's Hall of Fame.
He was a member of Siam Baptist Church where he served the church as a trustee. Mr. Lipford was an avid fan of both football and basketball at Elizabethton High School and attended most every home game. His hobbies included woodworking, reading and photography and he loved spending time in these activities. He also loved to keep in touch with his friends and former students using social media.
He is survived by a sister, Jessie Montgomery and her husband, Carroll, Elizabethton; two brothers, Gary "Butch" Lipford and his wife, Nancy, Elizabethton; Jimmy Lipford, Elizabethton; his nieces and nephews, Janie McKinney, David Smith, Pat Yelton, Pam Campbell, Becky Raulston, Chipper Montgomery, Gary A. Lipford, Mike Lipford, Chris Lipford, Jaime Lipford, Betty Lipscomb; a sister-in-law, Lucille Heaton and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service for Mr. Lipford will be conducted on Monday, December 29, 2014 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Jack Roddy and Rev. Jacob Guinn officiating. His niece, Becky Raulston, will deliver the eulogy. Music will be under the direction of Robin Montgomery and Bill Anderson.
The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 4:00-7:00 PM on Monday prior to the service or at his home at other times.
A Committal and Entombment service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers will be Mike Lipford, Gary Lipford, Chris Lipford, Chipper Montgomery, Keith Raulston, Oran Campbell, David Smith, and Rick "Doc" McKinney.

6203 Mr. Charles Howard "Kim" Hendrix, 90, 118 Buck VanHuss Drive, Elizabethton, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Hendrix was a native and lifelong resident of Carter County and a son of the late Charles and Nancy Campbell Hendrix. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sally Treadway Hendrix in 1994; also by three brothers, Dana Hendrix, Ed Hendrix and George Hendrix; and by one sister, Margaret Hendrix.

He was a retired school teacher and coach in the Carter County School System with 33 years of service in the Happy Valley School. He was also a professional photographer and a master woodworker. Mr. Hendrix was a member of Southside Christian Church.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law; Charles H. and Doris Hendrix, of the home; five daughters and sons-in-law, Charlotte and Carmon Dugger, Elizabethton; Jenene an Bill Allen, Pendleton, S.C.; Linda and Bobby Shelton, Elizabethton; Matilda and Tommy Spires, Lake Butler, Fla.; and Dawn and William Stover, Johnson City; a twin sister, Lucille Rocarro, Elizabethton; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

6204 Mr. Charles Ray Moody, age 79, of 540 Calloway Road, Boone, N.C. died Tuesday evening, December 7, 2004, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mr. Moody is survived by his wife, Mary Shull Moody, of the home; one daughter, Juanita Keehn and husband, Terry, of Dunkirk, Maryland; two granddaughters, Brittney Schade and Casey Schade and one grandson, Kyle Schade, all of Dunkirk. He is also survived by 1 niece, 3 nephews and a number of cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Vester and Birdie Mae Fox Moody; a brother, Bill Moody and a sister, Mildred Davis.
Graveside services will be conducted Saturday morning at 10:00 in the Shull Family Cemetery.

6205 Mr. Charles Smith Lowe, age 84, Jonesborough, passed away Thursday, October 17, 2013, at the Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Lowe was a native of Washington County and son of the late Lawson & Mary Ena Morley Lowe. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lowe was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters, Pruitt Lowe, Reba Pangle, Inez Henry, Albert Lowe, Alberta Miller, Mary Sue Murray and Gale Lowe. He was a member of Midway Baptist Church. Mr. Lowe was past Director of Washington County Farm Bureau and Washington County Co-op. He was a Dairyman and had worked for East Tennessee Select Sires and bred dairy cattle for 40 years. Charlie, as he was known to his friends, was an avid hunter, enjoying deer and quail hunting. His hobbies including raising cochin chickens and quail. Charlie loved the outdoors, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include his loving wife of 62 years, Roxana Sliger Lowe, Jonesborough; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rick & Peggy Lowe, Johnson City, and Bob & Karen Lowe, Chattanooga; grandchildren, Jessica Leu (David), Matt Lowe (Lindy), Miranda Caldwell (Shane), Derrick Lowe, Sarah Banner (Dom), Shaun Whaley (Stephanie), Andi Whaley and Ashlee Whaley; great-grandchildren, Emmarae Bradley, Amaris Bradley, Lennox Banner, Luke Lowe, Maggie Lowe, Levi Leu, Delaney Leu and Eva Caldwell; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack & Betty Lowe, Johnson City, and Lawson W. 6206 Mr. Chester Nave, 95, of 250 Keenburg Road, Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, December 21, 2006, in Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Nave was a native of Carter County and was the son on the late Robert Campbell & Mary Kate Estep Nave.
He was retired from Bemberg, had worked for the U.S. Forestry Service, and was a former part time employee of Tetrick Funeral Home. He was a member of Keenburg Freewill Baptist Church. Mr. Nave enjoyed woodworking, fishing and taking photographs.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Nave was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Chambers Nave on June 13, 2005, three brothers and one sister. He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Campbell of Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Faye Nave of Inverness, Fl; one grandson, Steven Campbell of Elizabethton, one granddaughter and
grandson-in-law, Kathy and Kenny Clifton of Elizabethton; five great grandchildren, Justin Clifton, Logan Clifton, Taylor Clifton, Dawson Clifton and Kindra Campbell all of Elizabethton; and a sister, Eola Nave of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Nave will be conducted on Saturday, December 23, 2006 at 8:00 p.m. in the Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel in Elizabethton with Rev. Derl Curry and Mr. David Tysinger, Minister officiating. The Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the chapel prior to the service or at the residence, 250 Keenburg Road at other times. The graveside service and interment will be Sunday, December 24, 2006 at 2 p.m. in the Emmert Cemetery. 6207 Mr. Church was a native of Carter County and had lived in Unicoi County since 11936. He was a son of the late Iley C. "W.C." and Ellen Catharine Bunton Church.
He was a Clinchfield Railroad inspector before retiring in 1975 after 52 years of service.

He was a member of the Buffalo Valley Christian Church and a member of the Unicoi Masonic Lodge No. 681 F&AM.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, June Ellen Potter Church; two brothers, Luther Church and Gordie Church; and one sister, Della Church Arney.

Survivors include his wife, Addie McGuire Church; two sons, David D. and David H. Church; one daughter, Blanca Church Miller.

6208 Mr. Claude Edward Wagner, age 91, of 603 Maple Road, Mountain City, TN, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family in High Point, NC, and went home to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday evening, June 17, 2009.

He was the son of the late James "Tice" and Addie Slemp Wagner and was a Charter Member of Vaughts Gap Baptist Church where he was a deacon and helped with the building of the church. His hobbies included gardening and yard work and he loved watching westerns. He especially enjoyed visiting all his neighbors.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Wagner, in May 2009; three sisters: Nell Fritts, Maude Dal Medo and Hattie Wilson.

Survivors include: three daughters: Brenda Putman and husband A. G. of Sophia, NC; Nancy Lewis and husband Ivan and Wanda Cox and husband Chris, both of High Point, NC; one son: Larry Wagner and wife Fran of High Point, NC; eight grandchildren: Sandra Flynn of Belews Creek, NC; Alan Putman and Jonathan Manring, both of Winston-Salem, NC; Tammy Lewis, Jason Lewis and Mark Wagner, all of High Point, NC; Angie Burney of Thomasville, NC; and Wrenn Cox of Richmond, VA; eleven great grandchildren: Abbi Thomas, Caitlin Thomas, Emma Manring, Grace Manring, Bailey Wagner, Sidney Wagner, Garrett Putman, Wayne Lewis, Jaiden Lewis and Kelsi Heilig, and Janae Deslanders; and one nephew: Barton Fritts.

Funeral Services for Claude Edward Wagner will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Vaughts Gap Baptist Church with Rev. Leon Bryant and Rev. Frank Johnson officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.

6209 Mr. Claude James Eggers, 77, of 769 Rominger Road, Banner Elk, the Matney community, died Thursday morning, Sept. 30, 1999, at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 2, 1922 in Watauga County. Mr. Eggers was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of White Rock Baptist Church. He owned and operated a dairy farm and retired from Security Oil Company in Concord.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Hatley Eggers; one son, Carroll Eggers and his wife, Linda, of Concord; a step-daughter, Sandy Davis and husband, Bill, of Boone; two step-sons, Bill Allen, Jr. and wife, Pam, of Fayetteville and Tim Allen and wife, Trina, of Charlotte; two grandsons, Sonny and Darrell Eggers, both of Concord; two step-grandchildren; three brothers, Fred Eggers of Boone, Buster Eggers and Jack Eggers, both of Lexington; and three sisters, Etta Davis and Mary Lou Eggers, both of Banner Elk, and Betty Faye Hughes of Roan Mountain, Tenn.

Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Charles McKinney and the Rev. J.C. Greene. Burial will follow in the Matney-Liberty Cemetery.

6210 Mr. Claude Matheson age 98, passed away March 27, 2013, at Lakebridge Health Care Center, Johnson City, TN.

Mr. Matheson was a native and life-long resident of Stout Branch, Neva, Johnson County, TN. Uncle Claude was known as a man of integrity, strength and character; always a gentleman.

Mr. Matheson was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Matheson and Catherine Stout Matheson; wife, Gertrude Butler Matheson; sister, Sallie Matheson Fritts; brothers, Raleigh, infant Paul, Earl and Barton Matheson.

Mr. Matheson was a graduate of Pine Grove School and Johnson County High School and attended East Tennessee State College. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps and taught at Oak Grove, Fritts Curve and Rock Springs before entering the United States Army in 1943. He served in the European Theatre of Operations as a medical technician, 1943-1946, at England's 40th General Hospital in World War II. He served with honor and distinction and was awarded the Meritorious Service Award, American Theatre Ribbon, European Theatre Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal and Bronze Star Medal with clusters.

Upon his return from service, he taught in the Johnson County Veterans Farm Program for five years.

Mr. Matheson was a life-time member and deacon of Pine Grove Baptist Church, taught Young and Adult Men Sunday School and served as Superintendent. He was a lifetime active member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars in Mountain City. He was a charter member of the Johnson County Senior Citizens Club and the Johnson County Historical Society.

In addition to serving as a teacher and soldier, he was a life-long farmer of property owned by the Matheson family since before 1850. He retired in 1975 after a career with the United States Department of Agriculture as a field representative serving in Carter, Johnson and Unicoi Counties.

Survivors include nieces: Nancy Tester (Herman), Betty Hilbert (Sammy) and Doris Stout; nephews: Edwin Matheson (Martha) and Barry Matheson (Marcia); great nieces: Linda Carter, Brenda Isham, Lisa Phillips, Amy Boling and Whitney Tiggott; great nephews: Bobby Gentry, Rob Tester, Roland Tester, Jeremy Matheson, Aaron Hilbert and Hunter Matheson; several great great nieces and great great nephews.

Services are scheduled to be held from Pine Grove Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 30, 2013, with Reverend Michael Garland officiating. Eulogy will be given by Mr. Barry Watson; music by the church choir and Michael Garland.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. before the service.

Military graveside and interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Mountain City. The Johnson County Honor Guard will provide military honors. Serving as pallbearers will be Herman Tester, Sammy Hilbert, Terry Matheson, Jeremy Matheson, Richard Watson and John Shull.

Mr. Matheson enjoyed the friendships of residents and staff at Broadmore Senior Living and Lakebridge Health Care Center where he lived for the past six and one half years. The family expresses special appreciation for the excellent care and love provided to Uncle Claude by the staff and administration of Lakebridge and sincere thanks to Pastor Mike's Ministry, Chaplain Mac and Antioch Church Ministry for providing him many spiritual blessings during the last years of his life.

6211 Mr. Clay Albert Perry, 95, of the Ed Williams Road, Zionville, died Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 16, 2004, at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 13, 1909 in Watauga County, a son of John Wesley and Rose Greene Perry.

Mr. Perry was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include four daughters, five sons, one sister, two sister-in-laws, and one brother-in-law.

Twenty-six grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bessie Sanders Perry; and his second wife, Ola Beach Perry; one daughter, Helen Beach; four sons, Grady, Johnny, Carlton and Estel Perry; two sisters, Pauline Greer and Grace Hart; four brothers, Charles, Tom, Woodrow and Odell Perry.

Services were be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Jeff Wood and the Rev. Steven LeaShomb. Burial followed in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

6212 Mr. Clifford James Ward, 56, of 3125 35th Street Court, N.E., Hickory, a native and former resident of Avery County, died Friday afternoon, March 14, 2003, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.
He was born March 28, 1946, in Beech Creek, to Viola Stines Ward and the late Monroe James Ward.
Mr. Ward was a graduate of Avery High School and a cook at the Box Car Grill in Hickory. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church in Vilas.
Survivors include two sons, Michael Ward of Hickory and Truett Ward of Hudson; his mother, Mrs. Viola Stines Phillips of Vilas; and three sisters, Ms. Jean Dishman of Lenoir, Geraldine Watson and husband, Troy, of Boone and Linda Walls and husband, Robert, of Vilas.
He is also survived by seven grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Harold Danner. Burial followed in the Beech Valley Community Cemetery.

6213 Mr. Coy Stines, 81, of 1291 Joe Parlier Road, Elk Park, died Saturday, June 11, 2005, at home.
He was born Oct. 21, 1923, in Watauga County, a son of the late Rev. Charlie and Ida Brown Stines.
Mr. Stines was a member of Beech Creek Regular Baptist Church, a deacon and church clerk for 46 years. He was a retired carpenter.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years, Faye Stines; three daughters, Gladys Guy and husband, Glenn, of Sugar Grove, Wanda Potter and husband, Dennis, and Glenda Roark and husband, Norman, all of Elk Park; five sons, Kelba Stines and wife, Betty, of Newland, Bill Stines and wife, Kathy, of Fleetwood, Carl Stines and wife, Tammie, of Butler, Tenn., Danny Stines and wife, Debbie, and Ronnie Stines, all of Elk Park; two sisters, Mrs. Viola Phillips of Vilas and Mrs. Ruth Estep, both of Elk Park. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul Stines, Floyd Stines and Clyde Stines; three sisters, Mrs. Eula Ward, Mrs. Vertie Whaley and Mrs. Addie Estep; and one great-grandchild, Trenton Cody Stines.
Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Beech Creek Regular Baptist CHurch. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Dean Shephard. Burial will follow in the Stines Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service.

6214 Mr. Daniel R. Lowe, 85, of 123 Okalona Road, Johnson City, TN, went home to be with his Lord on July 28, 2004.
Mr. Lowe was a native of Carter County and had lived his entire life in the Johnson City and Milligan area.
He was a son of the late George and Annie Blevins Lowe. Mr. Lowe will be forever remembered as a devout loving Christian man whose compassion, understanding, integrity and love for all he knew was a guiding beacon. His wisdom and guidance were beyond measure. His love of the outdoors and nature was always reflected in his speaking about his God.
Mr. Lowe, in addition to his parents, was preceded in death by two sons: Lonnie K. Lowe and Stanley Wayne Lowe; two brothers and two sisters.

Salts Lowe; His devoted sons and their wives: George and Judy Lowe, of Jonesborough, TN, Benny and Lynn Lowe, of Elizabethton, TN, Robert Hackler and Randi, of North Tazewell, VA.; five grandchildren, Kelly Lowe Conley, of Knoxville, TN, Christopher Lowe, of Greenville, NC, Shannon Lowe, of Elizabethton, TN, Melissa Elliott, of Fayetteville, NC, Paige Hackler (his hunting buddy), of Tazewell, VA; three great grandchildren.

6215 Mr. Daniel Young Shipley, age 85, passed away on Monday, January 23, 2023, at the VA Medical Center.

Dan was born October 23, 1937, to the late John & Rowena Maupin Shipley.

In addition to his parents, Daniel is preceded in death by son, Mark Shipley; siblings & their spouses, Bill Shipley, Jim & Shirley Shipley, Christina & John Wallace, Sara & JD Almany & John Shipley.

Daniel proudly served his country in the US Navy. He worked construction for many years and later in life became a Barber. He was a proud member of Boones Creek Christian Church.

Those left to cherish his memory are son, Jonathan Shipley and his wife, Stacia Cook; sisters, Diana Loyd & Rowena Bowers; several cousins, nieces & nephews.

Per his wishes, Daniel donated his body to East Tennessee State University.

Memorial Services will be held for Mr. Shipley at a later date and time at Boones Creek Christian Church.

6216 Mr. Darrell, J. Greene, 81, of 1684 Draft Road, Butler, Tenn., passed away Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at Mountain Home VA Center, following a brief illness.

He was born March 14, 1927 in Bakersville, N.C.

Mr. Greene was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church, Chairman of the Deacon Board, choir director, and he sang soprano for the Sugar Grove Quartet for 40 years. He was an Army veteran and retired from Burlington Industries in 1986. He was a farmer and loved gardening.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Ola Mae Greene; one daughter, Lois Greene and husband, Kenneth, of Vilas, N.C.; one son, Arthur Greene and wife, Daphne, and one grandson, Timothy Greene and wife, Laura, all of Butler, Tenn.; three brothers, John David Greene and wife, Betty Lou; and Roy Greene and Bobby Greene; and one sister, Loetta Bright, all of Butler, Tenn. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles S. Greene and Tina Dugger Greene.

Services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, from Sugar Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray Greene, the Rev. Doug Ranshaw and the Rev. Ray Sorrels officiating. Music was provided by Sugar Grove Choir and Willow Valley Choir.

Graveside service and interment followed at the Sugar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

6217 Mr. David Arnold Buck, went to be with his Lord Wednesday, November 1, 2017.

David was born February 27, 1927 and son of the late Ira and Mary Ruth Jenkins Buck. He was also preceded in death by his loving wife, Christine Buck (Broyles), three brothers, Edgar Buck, O'Dell Buck and J.D. Buck and one sister, Frances Hicks.

He was a member of The Westside Christian Church.

Mr. Buck was a United States Army Veteran having served during WWII & Korean War.

Left to cherish his memory, two sons, David Jr. and wife Yvonne, Greenlane, PA and Ricky and fiancée Sarah, Jonesborough; two daughters, Beverly White and husband Dave, Jonesborough and Sandra Schultz and Mel Yantz, Lakeland, FL; eight grandchildren, seventeen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; one sister, Faye Miller, Narvon, PA; brother, Arthur and wife, Brenda, Johnson City and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 pm Monday, November 6, 2017 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Palma Bennett, Minister and Minister John Wade officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Monday prior to the service.

Interment services will be conducted 11:00 am Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

6218 Mr. Dean L. Stout, age 78, of 1186 Stout Branch Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2013, in the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness.
Dean was born on February 7, 1935, in Johnson County, Tennessee, to the late D.L. Snyder and Virginia Stout Coffey. He was also preceded in death by a son, Stephen Dale Stout.
Dean was a member of Vaught's Gap Baptist Church and regularly attended the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church also. Dean enjoyed working with his backhoe and farming, especially working with his cattle.
Dean was a current Johnson County Commissioner, a former Circuit Court clerk for eight years and a United States Marine Corps Veteran.
He was a former member of the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge #679 F&AM in Butler, Tennessee, and a 32nd Degree Mason.
Survivors include: son, Michael L. and wife, Vicki A. Stout, of Mountain City, Tennessee; two sisters, Nancy Jacobs and husband, Alton, Mountain City, Tennessee, and Linda Arnold and husband, Terry, of Elizabethton, Tennessee; one brother, Tommy Coffey and wife, Linda, of Mountain City, Tennessee; grandchildren, Carli Stanley and husband, Justin, Hampton, Tennessee, and Calli Rae Smith, Mountain City, Tennessee. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Dean will be conducted on Saturday, November 9, 2013, from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Jim Norman and Rev. Chuck Morefield to officiate. Music will be under the direction of Joe Simcox.

6219 Mr. Dewey Lee “Gomer” Hartley, age 69, of Elizabethton “walked” home to be with his Lord Saturday, October 24, 2015 from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Carlee William and Rosalee Vines Hartley. He was a retired employee of Snap-On-Tools and he was of the Baptist faith. “Gomer” loved playing music with his friends and enjoyed listening to blue grass music. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to many.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, L. D. Hartley and Jessie Hartley and a sister, Maxine Whaley. Survivors include his wife, Brenda Hartley, of the home; three daughters, Norma Garrison and husband Mark, Elizabethton; Lorie Canter and husband David, Johnson City and Glinia Creasey and husband Doug, Elizabethton; grandchildren, Matthew Canter, Jacob Garrison, Kaylee Garrison, Kristen Creasey and Joshua Creasey; brothers, R. 6220 Mr. Don J. Collins, 85, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at his home.

He was the son of the late Eston C. and Maxie C. Carrier Collins and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Mickey Charles Richardson and Serena Carol Richardson; and two brothers, Jerry Collins and Gary Kyle Collins.

Mr. Collins was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in World War II. He was a retiree of North American Rayon Corporation following forty-three years of service.

He loved to garden, hunt and spending time with his family to whom he was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather. He was a fan of the Lady Vols and the Atlanta Braves.

He was a member of the Watauga Valley Free Will Baptist Church.

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-three years, Martha Omega Joines Collins, of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Dr. James L. Richardson, Elizabethton; three grandchildren, Donnie Richardson and his wife, Brenna, Chris Richardson and his wife, Shea, Charice Richardson, all of Elizabethton; two great-grandchildren, McKenna Richardson, Stephen Richardson, both of Elizabethton; a great-great granddaughter, Jordon Hillman, Johnson City; three sisters, Thelma Taylor, Lyndal Lowe and Phyllis Davis, all of Elizabethton; a brother and sister-in-law, Mack and June Collins, Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Darlene Collins, Johnson City; and Tyler Salo, whom he treated like a grandson; one uncle and aunt, Gray and Norma Carriger, Kingsport. 6221 Mr. Dovie (Dove) Willis Whaley, age 99, passed away peacefully Saturday morning, November 30th at Governor's Bend Retirement and Assisted Living in Erwin, Tn., surrounded by his family and friends.

Mr. Whaley was born April 28th, 1920 and lived most of his life in Washington County, TN.

Mr. Whaley was a World War II veteran, serving in Company G, 22nd infantry where he was awarded a purple heart and 4 bronze stars. He was a long standing and faithful member of Bethel Church of Christ in Jonesborough, TN., where he served in multiple capacities. Mr. Whaley worked for 32 years at Paty Lumber Company in Johnson City, primarily in sales. Dove Whaley loved spending time with his family and friends, gardening, farming, handyman, and serving others. Dove Whaley was truly loved by many and will be missed by all.

Mr. Whaley was the son of the late John & Stacy Bowman Whaley. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by two daughters, Judith (Judy) Ann Fowler and Sandra (Sandy) Jean Roberts; a grandson Keith Fowler; an infant grandson; sister Ethel (Whaley) Arrowood; brother Elmer Lloyd Whaley; and nephew Clarence Whaley.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 74 years, Louise (McInturff) Whaley; a daughter, Rita Perry (James); a son Bill Whaley (Teresa), 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild, as well as several nieces and nephews.

The family expresses their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the wonderful staff of Governor's Bend. Mr. Whaley's devoted care givers (angels) provided compassionate, loving care, with respect and honor, like that of a cherished family member.

He was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Frank and Emma Buckles. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack Buckles, Clay Buckles and Claude Buckles; three sisters, Effie Danner, Pearl Buckles and Edith Buckles.

Mr. Buckles was retired from East Tennessee Chair Company and had served as a constable for the Carter County Sheriff's Department.

He is survived by his wife of sixty years, Helen Bowers Buckles, of the home; three daughters, Teresa Chambers and husband, Donnie, Hampton, Mary Sue Buckles, Elizabethton, Jamie Simerly and husband, Terry, of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Donna Ranshaw, Joshua Miller, Daniel Chambers, Terrina Gloss and Katie Simerly; one great grandson, Seth Ranshaw; three brothers, Ivan Buckles, Jay Buckles, both of Elizabethton, Paul Buckles, Kingsport; three sisters, Margaret Garland, Michigan, Brenda Taylor, Johnson City, Myrtle Pierce, Elizabethton. A native of Johnson County, TN, he was the son of the late Dan and Sallie White Campbell. He was a retired truck driver and farmer. He was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Campbell was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nell Dugger Campbell; four sisters, Marie Hatley, Ophra Greene, Emma Taylor and Anabelle Potter; two brothers, Roy Campbell and J.P. Campbell; and a grandson, Daniel Campbell.

He was the son of the late Lawrence and Esther Humphreys Torbett. Mr. Torbett was the owner of the E. L. Torbett Company. He had also served in the U. S. Air Force. Mr. Torbett was a member of the Piney Flats United Methodist Church. 6225 Mr. Eli Trivett, Jr. 83 of Earle Street, Thomson, GA died Friday, February 13, 2009 at Doctors Hospital. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Ruth Tester Trivett.

Mr. Trivett was a native of Washington County, Tennessee but lived in McDuffie County most of his life. He was the son of the late Eli Trivett, Sr. and the late Bertha Brumit Trivett. Mr. Trivett served in the U.S. Navy Pacific Fleet during WW II and was retired as a textile worker from Kingsley Mill after 38 years of service. He served as a volunteer fireman for the McDuffie County Fire Department for over 30 years and served as former Chief of the Washington Heights Fire Department. Mr. Trivett was also a charter member of Washington Heights Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 16, 2009 at 2 o'clock p.m. at the Washington Heights Baptist Church with Revs. Sonny Peevy and Reginald Blakewood officiating. Interment will follow in Savannah Valley Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be members of the McDuffie County Fire Department.

He was born Feb. 5, 1927 in Avery County, the son of the late Cloyd and Mary Harmon Parlier.

Mr. Parlier was a Deacon at Fall Creek Baptist Church and a retired carpenter.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Langendorfer Parlier; one son, Vernon Parlier and wife, Susan, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; two daughters, Judy Loudermelt and husband, Dan, of Mill Springs, N.C.; and Nancy Johnson and husband, Bob, of Newland, N.C.; two brothers, Clint Parlier of Newfane, N.Y. and Troy Parlier of Olcott, N.Y.; two sisters, Martha Belle Greer of Elizabethton, Tenn. and Carrie Laws of Boone, N.C.; and ten granddaughters.

Mr. Bennett was a native of Washington County and the son of the late Eckard and Dorothy Miller Bennett. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Dewey Bennett, Bruce Bennett, and Bud Bennett; two sisters Claudine Blalock and Stella Bennett.

Mr. Bennett was a United States Army Veteran. He was a member of Skyline Heights Baptist Church.

Mr. Bennett enjoyed hunting and fishing, he loved having people over for his Friday night fish fries. He was a wonderful cook and enjoyed making wine with his brother.

Mr. Bennett was survived by his wife Peggy Hughes Bennett, two daughters, Debbie Ward and Kimberly Brown; two granddaughters Shannon Ward and Emily Brown two brothers, Donald Bennett and wife Opal, Eckard J Bennett and wife Grace; his favorite friend Bo, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Harmon liked to farm, his garden and sharing his vegetables. He was a loving father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a school bus driver and had worked in Oak Ridge. Mr. Harmon was a charter member and Deacon at Mountain View Baptist Church and was a Deacon at Sugar Grove Baptist Church before becoming a member of State Line Baptist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Sylvia Carolyn Ray and husband, Bruce, of Laurel Bloomery; two sisters, Anna Mae Goble of Hickory, N.C. and Margaret Harmon of Thomasville, N.C.; two brothers, Clint Harmon of Lenoir, N.C. and Claude Harmon of Randleman, N.C.; great-granddaughter, Abigail Ray; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Roger Morefield.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvania Stanbery Harmon; three sisters, Helen Glenn, Maude Harmon and Mary Harmon; three brothers, Carl, Paul and Grover Harmon; grandson, Gregory Ray; and his great-grandson, Adam Ray.

Mr. Rash was born in Washington County and the son of the late Jay & Bernice Pratt Rash.
Stacy was a member of Chestnut Grove Union Church.
He was a United States Army Veteran serving in the 82nd Airborne. He was a charter member of Hales Ruritan Club and VFW. He loved going to Senior Citizens, playing Rook and watching NASCAR.

6231 Mr. Fred E. Eggers, age 82, of Boone, died Thursday night, Dec. 14, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 5, 1924, in Valle Crucis, Watauga County, to Walter Eugene and Tempie Shook Eggers.

Mr. Eggers was a 1944 graduate of Cove Creek High School.

He retired from Hound Ears Resort after 30 years in property services.

He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, having served in Italy, France, England and Germany, and was awarded a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal and Infantryman Badge.

He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, and Boone Optimist Club.

He attended Greenway Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Buster, Claude, Jack and infant Joe Dale Eggers; three sisters, Charlotte Cole, Alice Tester and Snow Caraway.

6232 Mr. Fred “Sonny” Shoun, 78, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord, on Sunday, December 20, 2015, at Life Care Center of Gray, following an extended illness. He was born in Vivian, West Virginia, the son of the late Fred H. and Virginia Cannaday Shoun, and had lived most of his life in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Mr. Shoun was a 1955 graduate of Unaka High School, a veteran of the United States Air Force and a member of American Legion Post # 49. He also held an associate degree in accounting and was retired from Raytheon Corporation where he worked for thirty-eight years. He loved to play music, he was a Christian, an ordained deacon and was a Sunday School teacher. He was also a founding member of the Carter County Humane Society.

Those left to cherish his memory include, his wife of fifty-five years, Barbara Moody Shoun, of the home; a daughter, Ann Byrd and her husband, J.D. Murfreesboro, TN; a son, Gene Shoun and his wife, Katherine, Charlotte, NC; four granddaughters, Whitney Byrd, Reno, NV; Jessica Byrd, Bowling Green, KY; Sgt. Amanda White, (USAF), Langley Air Force Base, VA; Katie Cingel, Danville, VA; a sister, Virginia Coleman, and her husband, Richard, Elizabethton; special friends, Brenda and Darrell Cannon, Elizabethton; Jason and Sara Cox, Elizabethton; his beloved dog, Lulu and Lulu’s two doggie friends, Sidney and Sambo. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mr. Shoun will be conducted on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at 7:00 PM in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, with Rev. Ray Colbaugh officiating. Music will be under the direction of his son, Gene Shoun and his granddaughter, Katie Cingel. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Tuesday prior to the service, or at the home at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 in the Garden of Freedom of Happy Valley Memorial Park. 6233 Mr. Gary Stevens, 66, passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2021. The son of the late Lewis & Florence Richardson Stevens, Gary was born in Carter County, Tennessee, on December 31, 1954.
Gary retired from East Tennessee State University as a Maintenance Supervisor. He was formerly employed at SB White for 26 years.
Gary’s grandkids were the light of his life. He had a love for history and enjoyed teaching others about his culture. Gary participated in the Wataugans outdoor drama as Chief Little Carpenter for 30 years. He was a founding member of the Ghost Riders and also founded the Tennessee Frontiersman.
He is survived by his sons, Chris Stevens and Cody Stevens (Miranda), grandchildren, Sarah Stevens, Katherine Stevens, Case Stevens and Delaney Stevens, brother, Eugene Stevens Sr. (Karen), sister, Sandra Townsend, several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and fur-buddies, Gracie and Daisy.
In addition to his parents, Gary is preceded in death by his first wife, Daisy.
A funeral service will be held at the Tipton-Haynes Historic Site on Friday, October 15, 2021, at 12:00 PM. The graveside service will follow at 2:00PM at Roselawn Memory Gardens.

6234 Mr. George David Farthing, 90, of Vilas, the Bethel community, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at the Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 20, 1914 in the Bethel community to William Young and Naomi Perry Farthing.

Mr. Farthing was a graduate of Bethel High School. At an early age he joined Bethel Baptist Church.

As an active member, he served on various committees, including 20 years service as church treasurer.

From 1943 to 1954 he owned and operated the Watauga Telephone System. In 1954 he sold the system to Skyline Telephone Membership Corporation, but continued to operate his system until 1957, until Skyline had their system ready to go into operation. In addition to operating the telephone system and a grade A dairy, he did much community work, serving as presiding officer of the Bethel Community Club and the Beaver Dam Grange.

He was known to be the best neighbor in the community. When others needed assistance, or just to borrow a piece of machinery, they knew they could always call on Mr. Farthing.

Graveside services were conducted at the Winfield Scott Farthing Cemetery.

6235 Mr. George F. Dugger, Jr., 82, of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2011 at the Hermitage Health Center. He was the son of the late George F. Dugger, Sr., and Rena Hyder Dugger and was born in Carter County.

Mr. Dugger was a 1946 graduate of Elizabethton High School and a 1950 graduate of Milligan College where he played football for all four years. Following college he served in the United States Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. Following his service he returned to his education at the University of Tennessee where he went to law school. He began his career as an attorney in Elizabethton in 1955 and in 1962 established the law practice of Dugger and Cole. He served as the Carter County attorney from 1958-1962 and again from 1982-2006. He was also a member of the Tennessee Bar Association with fifty years of service and was a Senior Counselor. Mr. Dugger was a member of the American Legion Post #49 for fifty years. He was a member of the Elizabethton Golf Course and he played golf year round. He was an avid fan of UT sports and the Atlanta Braves baseball team. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-four years, Jane Hensley Dugger of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn Dugger-Edwards and her husband, Keith, Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Vickie Dugger, Johnson City; two grandchildren, Brett Baurle and his wife, Leslie, Elizabethton; Dr. Eric Baurle and his wife, Sarah, Brentwood, TN; four great-grandchildren, Macy Baurle, Elizabethton; Everett Baurle, Brentwood; Andrew Willis and Harrison Willis, both of Elizabethton; three nephews, the Honorable John F. Dugger, Jr. and his wife, Jean Ann, Morristown; Michael Fouts and Tommy Fouts, both of Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Peggy Barkley Dugger, Morristown, and a niece, Jerrie Sue Bowers and her husband, Jim Schweitzer, Jonesborough.

6236 Mr. George Willard McGuire, 86, of Banner elk died Saturday, Jan. 28, in Banner Elk at Life Care Center.

He was a native of Watauga County and had spent most of his life in Avery County. He was a son of the late Will and Louarty Wright McGuire. He was a carpenter and was a charter member of Valley Haven Baptist Church.

Survivors include one son, Mack McGuire of Banner Elk; three sisters, Violet Young of Burville, Tenn., Annie Tester of Banner Elk and Julie Mae Oliver of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and two brothers, Kiesler McGuire of Kingsport, Tenn., and Lee R. McGuire of Wilson. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Callie Gwyn McGuire.

Services were Monday morning at Valley Haven Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Odell Smith. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

6237 Mr. Grady Black, age 99, Johnson City, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at the Christian Care Center of Johnson City.

Mr. Black was a native of Butler, Tennessee, and son of the late Henry J. & Elizabeth Pearl Hatley Black. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Floyd Black; half-brothers, Pete, Roy, Bill and Earl; half-sisters, Grace Evans, Gertrude Milhorn, Betty Willis and Dorothy Tester; and a granddaughter, Ramona Black.

He was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Black was a United States Marines Veteran, having served during WWII.

He was a loving and caring dad and enjoyed his grandchildren. He enjoyed Ginseng hunting, fishing, hunting and gardening. He will be dearly missed by his family.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley & Junior Lewis and Elizabeth & Orlis Francis, all of Johnson City; son, Grady Black Jr., Chuckey; grandchildren, Karen Conner (Terry), Connie Lewis, Kim Dulaney (David), Tracy Francis (Danielle) and Marchelle Black; great-grandchildren, Karey Spear, Jamie Norris, Joshua Francis, Christian Black and Brooke Crockett; great-great-grandchildren, Kassidy Spear and Courtney Spear; and special friends, Rita Walls, Becky Pickering, Jane Shell and Martha Poole.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Grady's caregivers on the C-Ward of the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center and Christian Care Center of Johnson City.

6238 Mr. Guinn was a native and lifelong resident of Unicoi County and the son of the late John Wesley and Zipporah Taylor Guinn.

He was employed with the Erwin Post Office as a carrier and clerk before retiring in 1969, due to ill health, after 30 years of service.

Mr. Guinn was a member of the First Baptist Church of Erwin. He was a World War II Veteran, having served in the Army Medical Corps. He was a member of the Erwin Centennial Lodge #491 F & AM and also was a member of the American Legion.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Orville and Theodore Guinn and by sister, Iva Guinn Foster.

6239 Mr. Harry Moore Jr., age 95, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Gardners, VA he was the son of the late Harry Moore Sr. and Dora Ella Hale Moore. Mr. Moore had been a guidance counselor at Lamar High School and Daniel Boone High School. He served as a Baptist minister for more than fifty years and had formerly pastored at Skyland Heights Baptist Church, Little Mountain Baptist Church and Poplar Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Moore was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He loved reading his Bible and playing golf.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Moore; a sister, Elizabeth Oats and two brothers, Bill Moore and Bob Moore.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of seventeen years, Virginia Moore, of the home; a son, John Moore and his wife Joella, Elizabethton, TN; a special granddaughter, McKinley Moore, Elizabethton; special nephews, Rick Moore, Jerry Moore and Bob Moore Jr. and special nieces, Debbie and Betty Ann.

Mr. Engle was a native and lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a son of the late Clyde and Anzo Deaton Engle.

Mr. Engle owned and operated Engle's Grocery, Chestoa Pike, Erwin, for 43 years. He attended the Chestoa Baptist Church.

He was born May 15, 1932 in Watauga County, a son of the late Frank and Lillie Icenhour Canter.

Mr. Canter was a retired sawmill operator.

Survivors include his wife, Caroline Icenhour Canter; five daughters, Dovie Evans and husband, Ronnie, Katherine Potter, Lisa Johnson and husband, Van, all of Todd; Loretta Guy and husband, Terry, of Sugar Grove, and Gail Evans of Butler, Tenn.; two sons, Harold Canter of Todd, and Thomas Canter and wife, Michelle, of Boone; two sisters, Dorothy Miller and husband, George, of Hickory, and Viola Coffey of Yadkinville. Twelve grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Johnny Harvey Canter; five brothers, Austin, Gurney, Horton, Odell, and Dennis Canter; three half-brothers, Dave Icenhour, Wade Canter, and Ralph Canter; two half-sisters, Hazel and Berthie Miller; one daughter-in-law, Martha Canter; and one grandson-in-law, David Burchette.

Services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Nov. 22, 2006, at Elk Knob Baptist Church, with the Rev. Harold Danner, the Rev. Eric Cornett, and the Rev. Kenneth Phillips officiating.

6243 Mr. Harvey Tester, age 85, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Monday, December 10, 2012 in the Johnson City Medical Center following a sudden illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Earl and Nettie Andrews Tester. Mr. Tester worked for thirty-two years as a maintenance supervisor at Great Lakes Research Corporation. He was a member of Elk River Baptist Church and attended Doe River Baptist Church. Mr. Tester was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He loved country and bluegrass music and performed with several local bands by playing guitar and singing. He also loved animals, especially dogs, and was currently serving as the president of the Carter County Humane Society.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Carroll Tester; an infant sister and his step-mother, Nattie Tester. Survivors include his wife, Stella Main Tester, of the Home; a daughter, Penny White and husband Robert, Elizabethton; three step-grandchildren, Candi Sieiro and husband Anthony, Greensboro, NC, Bobbi Rena Tittle, Johnson City and Michael White, Nashville; two step-great-grandchildren, Walt Tittle III and Lindsey Tittle, both of Johnson City and four sisters-in-law, RoseMary Tester, Ohio, Mary Jo Laws and husband H.D. "Sonny", Butler, Edith Finney, Elizabethton and Louise Main, Butler. 6244 Mr. Hunter entered the Army in the Orangeburg District of South Carolina on February 1, 1778 and served for twelve months until January of 1779 when he was taken prisoner by the British. He was in the 3rd South Carolina Regiment commanded byColonel William Thompson. Mr. Hunter applied for a pension on July 10, 1855 in Lowndes County, Georgia. The records show that William Hunter was buying and selling land in Barnwell District in 1812 and 1813. After the Hunter home burned about 1836, he and his wife, Catherine (DeLoach) Hunter, moved with their daughter, Abigail, wife of Jacob Croft, to Lowndes County, Georgia, where they lived until they both died on the same day in 1857. 6245 Mr. Hurshel W. Bowers, age 90, Jonesborough, died peaceful Sunday, November 2, 2014, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
Mr. Bowers was born in Wise County, Virginia, and son of the late Arthur & Allie Miller Bowers. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bowers was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne K. Bowers; mother of his children, second wife, Wanda B. Bowers; step-mother, Pearl Bowers; sister, Betty Jo Wagner; granddaughter, Ann M. Bowers; and a son-in-law, Jim Blakeney.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Norton Virginia.
Mr. Bowers was a United States WWII Navy Veteran, having served in the South Pacific and South Atlantic. He was an auto parts store manager after the war, a coal mine owner and operator, real estate developer, an artist, and a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Survivors include three children, Gary L. Bowers and wife, Patty, Jonesborough, Cindy Blakeney, of the home, and Alan Bowers, Norton, VA.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 PM Tuesday, November 4, 2014, at the Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Dr. Bruce Montgomery and Minister David Clark officiating.

6246 Mr. J. Stewart Potter, 78, 405 Old Buck Mountain Road, Roan Mountain, Tenn., died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, in the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness.

Mr. Potter was a native of Carter County (Shell Creek community) and was the son of the late Jake and Nancy Jones Potter. He was preceded in death by two brothers, six sisters, and one grandson, Mikie Thompson.

He was a retired construction worker and farmer. He was of the Christian faith and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mrs. Frances Storie Potter of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law: Lisa and David Odom; and Linda Potter and Michael Thompson, all of Roan Mountain; one son and daughter-in-law, Brookie and Jean Potter, Elizabethton; three sisters: Okie Calhoun and Hildra Leonard, both of Hampton; and Florence McDonnell, Adrian, Mich.; eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one special nephew, Jess Simerly, Hampton, and several other nephews and nieces.

POTTER -- Funeral services for Mr. J. Stewart Potter, 78, 405 Old Buck Mountain Road, Roan Mountain, Tenn., who died Friday, Aug. 11, 2000, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, 2000, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Storie officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Charlotte Smith, organist. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, 2000, in the Potter Family Cemetery, Roan Mountain, with military honors accorded by the Lynn H. Folsom, V.F.W. Post No. 2166. Active pallbearers will be Jamie Perez, Jess Simerly, J.D. Calhoun, Michael Thompson, Kenny Jones, and Randy Harrison. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Potter, Crawford Potter, Fred Potter, Robert Vanhoy, George Shoemaker, A.J. Borders, Paul Harrison, Jr., Terry Harrison, Richard Harrison, Michael Harrison and Claude Jones. 6247 Mr. Jack Dana Guy, 79, of Jonas Ridge, and formerly of the Beech Creek community, died Tuesday evening, June 17, 2008 at Cannon Memorial Hospital.
He was born Sept. 21, 1928 in Avery County, a son of the late Thomas "Tom" and Nora Phillips Guy.
Mr. Guy was the owner of Guy's Folk Toys and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving is one sister, Marie Guy Greene of Elk Park; and a number of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ruby Guy Hicks; and one brother, Ray Guy.
Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Bill Warren. Burial will follow in the Ward Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.

6248 Mr. Jack Eggers, 74, of 5060 Old Salisbury Road, Lexington, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 12, 2001, at his home.

He was born July 30, 1927, in Yancey County, to the late Walter Eugene and Tempie Shook Eggers.

Mr. Eggers was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired truck driver from Food Lion, Inc. He was a member of V.F.W. Post No. 13 and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Taylor Eggers; one son, Michael Eggers and wife, Vonda; and one daughter, Ms. Donna Condrey, all of Lexington; one grandson, Daniel Condrey; and three granddaughters, Ashley Wells, Kimberly Eggers and Traci Condrey, all of Lexington; two brothers, Buster Eggers and wife, Jean, of Lexington and Fred Eggers and wife, Flavel, of Boone; three sisters, Etta Davis and husband Hildreth and Mary Eggers and husband, Hoover, all of Banner Elk and Betty Hughes and husband, S.E., of Roan Mountain, Tenn.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Claude Eggers and Dale Jo Eggers; and three sisters, Mrs. Charlotte Cole, Mrs. Alice Tester and Mrs. Snow Caraway.

Services were conducted Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel in Lexington, officiated by the Rev. Chris Noland and the Rev. Tommy Cashatt. Burial followed in Forest Hill Memorial Park in Lexington.

6249 Mr. Jady Charles Arnold, 73, of Stone Mountain Road, Vilas, died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 29, 2008 at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born August 5, 1934 in Mountain City, Tenn., the son of the late Fred Arnold and Lennith Forrester Arnold.

Mr. Arnold retired from Singer Furniture as a truck driver. He was a cattle farmer and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Surviving are his mother, one niece, two nephews, and two sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Floy Millsaps Arnold; one son, Freddie Charles Arnold; his father, Fred Arnold; and one brother, John Arnold.

Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Bethel Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Burl Greer and the Rev. Bill Hayden. Burial will follow in the Millsaps Family Cemetery.

6250 Mr. James "Jim" W. Crow, 86, of John-son City, passed away Sun-day, March 15, 2015, in the James H. Quil-len VA Nurs-ing Home.
Mr. Crow was a na-tive of Carter County. He was the son of the late Ear-nest and May-belle Bar-nett Crow.
Mr. Crow proudly served his coun-try in the US Army. He served dur-ing the Korean con-flict and the Vi-et-nam War and was awarded two pur-ple hearts. He re-tired as a Ser-geant First Class af-ter more than twenty years of ser-vice.
He was a mem-ber of Piney Grove Free-will Bap-tist Church.
In ad-di-tion to his par-ents, his sis-ter, Jane Cal-houn, and son, Billy Crow, pre-ceded him in death.
Sur-vi-vors in-clude: four broth-ers, Howard Crow, Al-fred Crow, Carl Crow, and Harry Crow; four sis-ters, Marie Perry, Edith Keplinger, Florence Rob-i-nette, and Shir-ley Mathe-son; one son, James E. Crow; step-daugh-ter, Cathy C. Dant-zler; step-son, Tho-mas Al-len; five grand-chil-dren; three great grand-chil-dren.
