6020 Melvin Arnold Jones, 73, of Russ Norris Road, Elk Park, NC, went home to be with the Lord Thursday evening, July 27, 2023, due to complications from a brain bleed. He passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family.

Melvin was born Nov. 25, 1949, was a lifelong resident of North Carolina, and lived most of his life in Avery County, in the Old Beech Mountain Community. He was a member of Flat Springs Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and, during periods of his life, a Sunday School teacher. Melvin retired from BellSouth after 33 years of service and retired from the Fall Creek Volunteer Fire Department, where he served for 20 years.

Melvin was a faithful, caring servant of the community and genuinely loved spending time with others. Beyond his service as a Deacon and volunteer firefighter, he was a Mason, a Shriner, and a Hospital Tripster, providing transportation to Shriner hospitals for patients and their family free of charge. Melvin had a stubborn desire to always do the right thing, was an expert hunter and sportsman, and had a quick-witted sense of humor that could make anyone laugh. He loved playing pranks on people, once surprising his children by catching two fish and putting them in his lunchbox, knowing that the kids always opened it at the end of the day to see if he had a treat for them. We will never forget the big grin on his face when we opened it and exclaimed "He brought us fish!"

Melvin loved good food, good company, and fellowship with the Lord. His favorite verse was Matthew 6:33: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." He experienced many blessings in this life by living out that verse and all who knew Melvin were blessed by the love and laughter he shared.

He was preceded in death by parents, Cleo and Martha Jones; sister, Maxine Trivette; two brothers-in-law, Danny and Ronnie Baldwin; and two sisters-in-law, Renetta Baldwin and Sheri Jones.

6030 Michael J. Watts has done extensive research on the Moody family. In his Article 241 in the Heritage of Watauga County, he states: 'The earliest Moody ancestors to settle in what is now Watauga County apparently came to this area from Virginia. They seem to have come first in the late 1780's to an area in (then) Burke (now Caldwell) County near the present Watauga County line. Some remained in Burke and in what later became Caldwell, but others moved into Ashe (now Watauga) to the present Valle Crucis and Foscoe area between 1800 and 1815. these early Moodys may have been descendants of one Thomas Moody and his wife Ann, who emigrated from England to the area of Jamestown, Weyanoke Parish, Charles City County, Virginia, in the late 1600's or early 1700's. The descendants of this Thomas are known to have settled in Virginia, South Carolina, and the southwestern North Carolina mountain counties of Buncombe, Haywood and Cherokee. However, no definite connection has been made to between Moodys of Northwestern North Carolina and those descended from this Thomas Moody. Perhaps the earliest Watauga Moody about whom we have definite information is Edward Moody. He was born about 1756/7 in Albemarle (later Fluvanna) County, Virginia. His father may have been Thomas Moody, Sr. (born ca 1732), althogh this has not been established with certainty..... Another early Moody was George, who seems to have come into this area about the same time as Edward. The exact relationship between George and Edward is not yet known. They may indeed have been brothers, perhaps sons of Thomas Moody, Sr., or may have been cousins, or nephew and uncle....' Moody, George (I6927)
