5956 Mayme Katherine Dyson, age 93, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, April 27, 2018. She was born on February 15, 1925 to the late Andy Dyson Sr. and Cora Lee Forrester Dyson. In addition to her parents, Katherine was preceded in death by sisters, Kitty Phillips, Ruth Rhymer, Shirley Blevins, Mary Woods, Ruby Woods and Pauline Guy and brothers, Norman Dyson, Karl Dyson, Charles Dyson and Andy Dyson Jr.

She was a member of First Baptist Church. Katherine was a simple woman and lived a simple life. She was a gifted quilter and had made many beautiful quilts through the years. She loved to help and bring joy to others.

Those left to cherish her memories include a nephew and special caregiver, Bobby Dyson; sister-in-law, Lucy Dyson; brother-in-law, Billy Joe Blevins; special neighbors include, Ruth Tilley, Patience Baird and Zeb Baird; many more nieces and nephews.

Graveside service and interment will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 29, 2018 at the Donnelly Cemetery (N. Church Street, Mountain City, TN) with Pastor Ricky Campbell officiating. Special music will be provided by Marissa, Hospice Chaplain. Pallbearers will be Bud McComas, Dickie Lindsey, Mike Phillippi, Tommy Rhymer, Weston Throop, Eric Cullop.

5958 Maynard Earl Hughes, age 76, of Ingalls, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept 16, 2018. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Joe Earl and Willie Mae Hughes. He was also preceded in death by a son: Tony Hughes; siblings: Kenneth Hughes, Shirley Robinson, Sue Hughes and Sanford Hughes. He was a US Army Veteran, having served during the Vietnam Era. Maynard was a member of Whites Memorial Baptist Church who loved fishing, hunting and wild flowers.

Surviving is his loving wife of 51 years: Renate Hughes; daughters: Sylvia Jones and husband, Greg, of Spruce Pine, and Manuela Sparks and husband, Jerry, of Spruce Pine; grandchildren: Samantha Canipe and husband, Scott, of Spruce Pine, Seth Hughes and fiancée, Lorie, of Burnsville, Justin Hughes and wife, Kristen, of High Point and Paula McMahon and husband, David, of Ohio; great-grandchildren: Collin and Miriam Irick of Ohio, Macie Hughes of High Point and a great-grandson on his way; siblings: Lila Vance and husband, Butch, of Pyatte, Louella Singleton of Buck Hill and Stanley Hughes and wife, Amy, of Clarksville, Va; sister-in-law: Jacque Hughes of Spruce Pine and a brother-in-law: Fred Robinson of Marion. A host of nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, in Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. David Troutman and Dr. Darrin Waldroup officiated. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the services at the church. Graveside services were held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, in Whites Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Sparks officiating and military honors conducted by Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter #57 D.A.V.

5959 McArthur 'Mac' Williams, age 76, of Stout Branch Rd., Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2019 at his home. Mac was born on March 25, 1943 in Elizabethton, TN (Carter County). He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ruth Davis Williams; step-father, John Griffith; brother, Tony Griffith, sisters-in-laws; Hope Payne and Helen Treadway; brothers-in-laws, John Madron and Toll Lewis; mother-in-law and father-in- law, Gail and Earl Madron.

Mac graduated from Hampton High School and East Tennessee State University. He served in the United States Army from July 1967 until August 1973 with the rank of Captain. He was retired from Northeast Correctional as a teacher. Mac also taught in the Carter County and Johnson County school systems. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Mac is survived by his wife of 48 years (September 18, 1970) Hallie Madron Williams; sister, Peggy Ann Elliott of Austin, TX; sister-in-law, Hilda Lewis; many nieces and nephews.

Graveside Service and Burial will be conducted on Wednesday May 29, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. from Pleasant Grove Cemetery with Pastor Mike McNutt officiating. Military Honors to be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Honorary Pallbearers are William Earl Lewis, Dustin Elliott, Dr. Jim Shine, Bill Haymore, Don Hassenrich, Jerry Greer, Jeff Buckner, Bud Brown, Shooter Brown and Benny Grindstaff.

Missing Man's Body Found Near Butler Home

The body of 67-year-old N.H. McCloud was found near Butler Sunday, Dec. 23, 20 days after the retired Navy veteran was reported missing.

The body was found 1-1/2 miles from the dock in the Campbell Hollow section about noon by the victim's brother, Harry McCloud. Officers surmised McCloud had apparently tried to take shelter since his body was partially covered by a log. The man's wallet and hat were found beside the body.

An intensive search of the lake area was begun shortly after McCloud was reported missing, but was called off when officers received reports that the man might have gone to Georgia where his wife was staying.

McCloud lived at Butler with a daughter, Mrs. Jean Trivette. She told officers her father had left $45 in a Bible before leaving and said he seemed "his usual self."

McCloud was a member of the Pierce Baptist Church and the VFW Post 2166 in Elizabethton.

Survivors include the widow, four daughters, Mrs. Fred Trivette of the home; Mrs. Donald Martin and Joyce McCloud, Chesterfield, Ind., Mrs. Herbert Pennington, Columbus, Ga.; and Lloyd McCloud of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Effie Wagner, Elizabethton, Mrs. Minnie Sweeney, Kingsport; three brothers, Walter McCloud, Elizabethton, Harry McCloud of Butler and Robert McCloud of Johnson City and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted from Pierce Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, with Rev. Victor Broyles and the Rev. H.M. Slagle officiating.

Burial was in Butler Memorial Cemetery with full military honors at graveside with the VFW Post 2166 in charge.

Pallbearers were Worley, Ray and Woodrow Pierce, Cecil Oliver, James Williams, Walter P. Broyles, Clyde Dunn, and Howard Campbell.

5961 McDonald Slemp, age 89, of Mountain City, passed away Wednesday, February 06, 2008 in Johnson City Medical Center.
Mr. Slemp was born on May 24, 1918 in Johnson County to the late Charlie F. and Nettie Arney Slemp. He was a truck driver for many years and retired from Tri-State Growers. He liked to farm and garden. He was a member of Vaughts Gap Baptist Church.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Elsie Mercer, Venie Wilson and Clydie Bear; brother, Orville Slemp; and a son-in-law, Jim Rupard.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Ruby Perkins Slemp; three daughters, Linda Rupard of Winston-Salem, NC, Karen Icenhour and husband Tom of Mountain City and Donna L. West and husband Dr. Mike West of Knoxville; two sons, Buddy Slemp of Lexington, NC and Jack Slemp and wife Olive, of Lexington, NC; sister, Elizabeth Gentry of Mountain City; grandchildren, Chris, Alisa, Billy, Michael, Debbie and Frankie; great grandchildren, Thomas, Matthew, Kelsey, Brandy, T. C., Billy, Jr. "Bubba", Katelyn, Rhea, Brian, Megan and Courtney; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 8, 2008 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Bro. Frank Johnson and Bro. Bruce Simcox officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Chris Icenhour, Charles Mercer, Pat Conville, Jody Hawkins, Curtis Gentry, Mike West, Nick Perkins, Ronnie Perkins and Terry Hawkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Icenhour, John Perkins, Steve Courtner and the Johnson County Rescue Squad. Music will be provided by Joe Simcox.

5962 McQUEEN, MONA M. SHADY VALLEY, TN-- Mona M. McQueen, 81, of 9952 Highway 421 North, died Wednesday, March 1, 2000, in Johnson City Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Shady Valley and a daughter of the late Isaac and Gertie Long Blevins. She was the widow of Chester McQueen and a member of Harmon Christian Church. Surviving are three daughters, Delores Blevins of Rockford, AL, and Phyllis Perdue and Judy Mahala, both of Shady Valley; a son, Kenny McQueen, of Butler; a sister, Sue Barry of Shady Valley; a brother, R.B. Blevins of Shady Valley; 15 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Harmon Christian Church by Johnson Funeral Home in Damascus. Jim Hutchinson, minister, will officiate. Burial will be in Blevins Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lonnie Long, Kenneth Garland, Huey Long, Elwood Cretsinger, Gary McQueen, Erby Howard, Tom Reece and R. D. Garland. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons. 5963 MEADOWVIEW, Va. - Vern Williams, 86, passed away Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at his residence.
He was born in Carter County, Tenn., and had lived most of his life in Washington County. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Damascus and loved his Sunday school class very much.
He served his country proudly and with honor in the U. S. Navy during World War II. While in the Navy, he was a featherweight boxing champion. He was a retired fitter welder with Bristol Metals. While employed there, he was very instrumental with the construction of the Bristol Va./Tenn. sign on State Street.
He was a farmer who loved to garden and enjoyed going to the farmer's market. He was an avid reader who enjoyed reading Appalachian history. He also loved his faithful Labrador Retriever, Foxxy.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Nannie L. Williams; 2 sisters; and 11 brothers.
He is survived by his son, Vernie Williams and wife Sue of Meadowview; four daughters, Jane Day and husband Randall of Sparta, Tenn., Donna Fuller and husband Jimmy of Damascus, Suzanne McGlocklin of Bristol, Va., and Kim Parks of Bristol, Va.; one brother, Lester Williams of Londonberry, N.H.; one sister, Pauline Richardson of Grand Prairie, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be conducted Friday, June 26, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Street Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, with Pastor David Matlock officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. The committal service will be conducted Saturday, June 27, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the Greenfield Baptist Church Cemetery, with Pastor Wayne Guinn officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Highlands Veteran's Honor Guard. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to assemble at the cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the First Baptist Church men's Sunday school class.

He was born to the late Winston Ferry Vanover and Della Payne Vanover in Mountain City, Tenn. He is also preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie Lewis and Elizabeth Vanover. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Margaret Grace Humphrey Vanover; two sons, James R. Vanover of the home and David Joe Glen Vanover and wife, Sharon, of Atkins, Va.; two daughters, Patricia Diane Goad and husband, Edward, of Bristol, Va., and Sherrie Vanover of the home; three brothers, Ralph Vanover and wife, Brenda, of Shady Valley, Tenn., R.B.
