5801 Martha Glenda Kay Trivette Brush, 69, of Morristown, Tenn., passed away on Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at Johnson City Medical Center, surrounded by her family, following a brief illness. Martha was born in Carter County, Tenn., a daughter of the late Elmer Trivette and Rana Dugger Trivette. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Henson, and her brothers, Boyd Trivette, David Potter and Mike Trivette. Martha was a homemaker and a member of Piney Grove Christian Church in the Poga Community of Butler. She was a wonderful wife, mother, aunt and friend, and will be missed by all that knew her. Martha loved her cats as her family. Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband, Richard Brush, of the home; her daughters, Lisa Brush and Heather Hawkins and husband John; her brothers, Dale Potter and Bob Trivette; a special niece, Shelia Loudermilk and husband Mike; her great-nephew, Justin Loudermilk; her brother-in-law, Charles Henson; her sisters-in-law, Peggy Kenney-Windsor and husband Bill and their family of Ontario, Canada, and Barbara Kien and family of Royal Oak, Mich.; her special cousins, Barbara Nunley, Ricky Harmon, Margaret Ward, Blanche Lambert Williams, Arbeulah Lambert and Beatrice Montgomery; and her special friend, Wilma Guy Henthorne. A service to honor the life of Mrs. Martha Glenda Kay Trivette Brush will be conducted at noon Saturday, January 9, at the Piney Grove Church of Christ, in the Poga Community, with Mr. Dean Estep, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Carl Cable. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 8, in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, or at the residence of her brother-in-law, Charles Henson, at anytime. Mr. Steve Hilman will provide a special prayer at the receiving of friends. The graveside service will follow in the Piney Grove Church of Christ Cemetery. 5804 Martha Jane Whitehead was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Whitehead b. 1845 in Carter Co., TN, and Elizabeth Jane Boring b. 5 Feb 1846 in Montvale, Blount Co., TN (both buried at the Red Top Primitive Baptist Church Cem., Blount Co. TN); she had the following siblings: David L., John Harvey, William M., Mary Elizabeth, Robert Bruce, Thomas Jefferson, Walter Edward, and Lucinda Ellen Whitehead.

She married on 14 Feb 1886 and divorced (1) William A. Gregory b. in Cades Cove on 4 Jul 1864 d. 01 Mar 1910 (buried at the Primitive Baptist Church, Cades Cove); they had 7 children: Lee, Susan, Beula, Uceba, Unkn, Paralee who married Perry Raby, Nora Elizabeth (Lizzie), and Andrew M. Gregory.

She married in 1908, (2) John Hendrix (buried at Red Top Primitive); they had one son: Curtis Allen Hendrix b. 1909, d. 1944 in Union Co., TN, who married Thelma Lee Haney b. 1 Jan 1910, d. 20 Oct 1990 in TN; they had 9 children.

Martha & her son Curtis were among the first to be given notice in Nov 1942 when the Manhattan Project began to acquire land for the Kingston Demolition Range, later the Clinton Engineer Works and later Oak Ridge. They moved to a home on Brickyard Rd. in Powell owned by her son Andrew M. Gregory where she lived until her death.

5805 Martha Jean Johnson, 72, of Candler, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at Memorial Campus Mission Hospitals.

A native of Haywood Co., she was a daughter of the late Blaine and Texie Kuykendall Trull. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ted Johnson, who died in 1990; and son, Richard "Bo" Johnson, who died in 1995.

Mrs. Johnson's profession was taking care of other people. She had also volunteered for the Republican Party as a poll worker and was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughters, Darlene Lanning, of Candler, and Janet Hall and husband Tyson, of Etowah; sons, Kenneth Johnson and wife Teresa, and Carl Johnson and wife Brenda, all of Candler; sister, Rachel Plemmons, of Candler; brother, Paul Trull and wife Lottie, of Candler, and Harley Trull and wife Beulah, of Morganton; 11 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Johnson will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday at New Morgan Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Winfred Bennett, Dennis Shepherd, and Charles Sprinkle officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

5806 Martha Jeweldine Willis Rice, age 80, went to be with her Lord on April 28, 2021 at the Center of Aging and Health. She was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and the daughter of Jasper and Thelma Ray Willis.

Martha was a dedicated Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She was a faithful member of Flag Pond Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, taught the Children’s Sunday School Class, and held the office of secretary.

Martha retired from Morrill Motors after forty-one years of service. She was a member of Flag Pond 129 Eastern Star, where she was a worthy matron in 1968.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, David Lee Rice; one grandson, Jacob Mosley; nine brothers, three sisters, three half-brothers, and one half-sister.

Martha leaves behind to cherish her memory, loving husband of sixty years, Robert Rice; one daughter, Regina (John) Mosley; one grandson, Matthew Mosley; one granddaughter, Courtney Mosley, two sisters: Eva (James) Bowman and Linda (Guy) Edwards; sisters-in-law: Juanita Willis, Carolyn Willis, Geraldine Willis, Mary Sue (Phillip) Mashburn, Brenda (Jerry) Bennett, and Pauline Rice; brother-in-law, Ivan Rice; special friends: Linda Willis, Frances Hardin, Genevieve Harris, Betty Ledford, Victoria Osborne, and Tammy Pate.

The family will receive friends from 4:30-6:30 PM Monday, May 3, 2021 in the Robert Ledford Funeral Home. Funeral service will follow at 6:30 PM with Pastor David Crutchfield and Pastor Jeremy Clark officiating. Music will be provided by Gary Amos and Inez Chandler. Pallbearers will be John Mosley, Matthew Mosley, Keith Bowman, Kevin Bowman, Ivan Rice, and Matthew Willis. Honorary pallbearer will be John Willis. Committal service will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at Evergreen Cemetery with James Bowman officiating.

5807 Martha L. Buck Oliver, 93, of Elizabethton, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 8, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Joe and Minnie Estridge Buck. She was also preceded in death by her son, Rickey Wayne Oliver, on November 9, 2018.
Mrs. Oliver was a member of Hunter Memorial Baptist Church.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 66 years, Paul W. Oliver; two grandchildren, Cherokee Oliver and Phillip Brandon Oliver; three brothers, Billy Joe, Ray and Jerry Buck; and one sister, Sue Jarrett. She is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Robert Guy Oliver and Terry Oliver.
Graveside services and interment for Martha L. Buck Oliver will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, February 11, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Terry Oliver officiating. 5809 Martha Nan Garland Meredith passed away peacefully on August 29, 2019, at the age of 82.

Martha Nan was born on October 6, 1936 in Johnson City to Isaac Wright and Mary Edna Hickman Garland. Martha Nan was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Joseph Hyder "Bill" Meredith, her beloved her son, Matthew Isaac Meredith and her brother, John Hickman Wallin.

Martha Nan is survived by three children Mitch (Nancy) of Johnson City, Mindy Coulter (Tom) of Knoxville, and Mary Jo Barreto (Rich) of Tega Cay, South Carolina. "Nana" was very proud of her 10 grandchildren and their spouses, Taylor (Melissa) Meredith of Roanoke, Elizabeth (Jon) Rhea of Seattle, Patrick Meredith of Birmingham, John (Ashley) Coulter of Knoxville, Meredith (Igor) Oruc of Jacksonville, William Coulter and Davis Coulter of Knoxville, Anna Katherine (Denny) Townsend of Florence, SC, Richard Barreto of Tega Cay, and Matthew Watkins Meredith of Johnson City, loving them unconditionally. Nana also delighted in her 7 great-grandchildren and relished every new picture of them. She enjoyed a large network of extended family of nieces and nephews and friends. Martha Nan was a dedicated mother and a master of gardening.

Martha Nan graduated from Science Hill High School in 1953, attended Stephens College the following year. She returned to college in 1967 and earned a Bachelor of Science cum laude in history from ETSU in 1970. She met the love her life, Bill, at Meredith's Boat Dock on Boone Lake and they were married on September 10, 1955. Martha Nan lived most of her life in the Garland family home on Knob Creek Road, a life that revolved around family, faith, friends and community.

As her children grew older, Martha Nan began to take an active interest in the business community by beginning her business career in banking. She later joined Bill in their property management and development business. She was also the managing partner of The Colonial Corporation which was responsible for the development of the Colonial Center, Bennigan's, Steak & Ale and the first Lowe's in Johnson City. Martha Nan was an active member of First Christian Church and the Mr. & Mrs. class.

She was a pioneer as one of the early women leaders of Johnson City. Martha Nan had a passion for health care, community service and youth programs. She served on the board of the Johnson City Memorial Hospital and as board president in 1992-93. She was an active member of the Washington County Commission from 1982-2002 serving as chairwoman of the budget committee for many years. She also served as chairwoman of the Med Tech Park Board, Blue Ridge Medical Management, vice-chair of the Johnson City Public Building Authority, the first president of the Friends of the Johnson City Public Library, chairman of the Oakland Park Children's Home, and president of the Junior League of Johnson City and the Tennessee Assembly of Hospital Trustees. She was a founding member and the 2007-2010 Regent of the Ann Robertson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century. She also served on the board of directors of the Salvation Army, League of Women Voters, Washington County Republican Women, and the Johnson City/Washington County Economic Development Board. She was an emissary for the Quillen College of Medicine and a member of ETSU President's Distinguished Trust. Martha Nan was recognized by the Mountain States Health Alliance Foundation as its 1999 Spirit of Johnson City recipient. The Johnson City/Washington County Chamber of Commerce inducted Martha Nan into its Hall of Fame in 2014, a year in which "Faith in the Future" was the theme. Martha Nan epitomized that theme.

Martha Nan was an active supporter of the Johnson City Sail and Power Squadron and the Boone Lake Association. She and Bill enjoyed boating adventures and spending time at "Dad's Pad" on Boone Lake with their family and friends. Martha Nan enjoyed the camaraderie of her bridge club and Brown Gardenias friends.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 4th at 9:30am with a celebration of life service to begin at 11:30 at First Christian Church, 200 E. Mountcastle Dr., Johnson City, TN 37601. Dr. Eugene Wigginton, Minister, will officiate. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Bridge Club of America (BCA) and the Mr & Mrs Sunday School Class at FCC. The family will also be receiving friends at a reception following the service at the Johnson City Country Club, 1901 E. Unaka Ave., Johnson City, TN 37601.

The graveside committal service will be held on Thursday, September 5th at 8:00 am at Happy Valley Memorial Park, officiated by Dr. Dick Morris.

5810 Martha Pritchard Irick, 86 of Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at home surrounded by her family. Martha was a member of Zion Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Glasco Irick and one son, Larry 'Rabbit' Irick, three brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by her sister, Mae Pritchard of Elizabethton; son, Gene and his wife Liz of Rialto, CA; son Melvin and his wife, DeAnna of Elizabethton; son, Jerry and his wife Camanda of Elizabethton; daughter Linda Stillwell and her husband Mike of Jonesborough; 15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

A life that touched so many can never be forgotten. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the TLC Community Center, Elizabethton, TN 423-543-4673 to honor her love of children and her desire to feed the hungry.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, October 21st at 2pm at Zion Baptist Church, Gap Creek with Dr. Alan King, officiating. Music will be by the Church Choir and Quartet. Family will receive friends at 1 pm at the church until time for the service.

5811 Martha Sue Slagle Ford, 80, Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at her residence. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Clayton Floyd and Virginia Dare Tester Slagle. Martha was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. She formerly had worked in the City of Johnson City Manager’s Office and also at Nanny’s Country Kitchen. She was involved in the Recovery Soldiers Ministries. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Perry Ford, who passed away August 16, 2021, and a brother, Tony Slagle. Survivors include her daughter, Kim (Reggie) Scalf; three sons, Jeff Lethcoe, Evie and Jerry Lethcoe and Jimmy Ford; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Barbara Hart (Gator) Dickie Tester; and one aunt, Betty Harris. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, February 16, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with her grandson, Pastor Joshua Scalf, officiating. Active pallbearers will be Michael Williams, Tony Slagle Jr., Mitch Presnell, Terry Rose, Zachary Rose, Freddie Malone, Brian Bowman and Gator Tester. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of Amedisys Hospice, Amy Rose and Sheena Scalf.

5813 Martha Whittington (Granny) Pittman, age 90, of Newland, NC was welcomed home by her Lord and Savior, on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at her residence after a prolonged illness.

She was born on March 11, 1929, in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Willard and Ethel Hicks Whittington.

Martha enjoyed family gatherings, family beach vacations, attending her church at Frank Presbyterian Church (where she had served as a Sunday School teacher, teaching the youth of the community), eating out and shopping with her sister, Louise. She worked for Tar Heel Mica Company, Glen Raven Mills, retired from Baxter Healthcare, and then retired once more from the Avery County CAP Program at the age of 82.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Husband: Jack Richard "Dick" Pittman; a Grandson: Michael "Hippy" Singleton; and 12 siblings.

Services for Martha Pittman will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 29, 2019, from the Frank Presbyterian Church, with Rev. Hal McNeely officiating.

The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. on Friday at Frank Presbyterian Church.

Interment will follow the service in the Pittman Cemetery.

5814 Martin B. Bennett, 88, of Hampton, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2018, at Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Malley and Lillie Arnett Bennett.
Mr. Bennett served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was co-owner of Hampton Auto Parts and a member of Union Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Michael Lynn Bennett; five brothers, Barney, Grant, Darius, Claude and Clinton Bennett; and one sister, Jane Ward.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ruby Hicks Bennett; one daughter and son-in-law, Amy and Terry Banner, Hampton; one grandson, Isaac Banner; one sister, Myrtle Rhudy, Sulphur Springs; and his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Jane Bennett and Wanda Bennett, Elizabethton, Carrie Keene, Oak Ridge, Edna and Edward Thomas, Ruth and Richard Barrie, all of Elizabethton, E.C. Vines of Ohio and J.D. Cook, Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Martin B. Bennett will be conducted at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, April 8, at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. James Strickland and the Rev. Wesley Duncan officiating. Interment will follow in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Doug Ranshaw officiating. Active pallbearers will be David Bennett, Mickey Bennett, Ricky Whitehead, Kenneth Thomas, Dale Cook, Teddy Hardin, Terry Banner and Allen Hobbs. 5815 Martin Dean Walker, age 77, of Mountain City, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 27,2012 at the Mountain City Care Center.

A native of Johnson County, Dean was born on October 9, 1934 to the late C.H. 'Herb'and Lynie Walker. In addition to his parents, Dean was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Walker Monseur and brothers: Jack Walker, Charles F. Walker and Frederick D. Walker.

Dean enjoyed Nascar, roller skating, carpentry, history and spending time with his grandchildren. Dean worked with the Johnson County Highway Department for several years until his health declined. He was a member of First Baptist Church and recently had come to know Pastor Steven Spencer and the Calvary Baptist Church fellowship. Dean had served with the Johnson County Rescue Squad and was a United States Air Force Veteran. He will truly be missed by his family and all who knew him.

Dean is survived by his wife Clara FayeWalker; daughter, Ladeana Glenn of Gastonia, NC; Step-mother, Mattie G. Walker of Mountain City, TN; sisters: Blanche Settlemyre, Mary Hicks, both of Newton, NC, Shirley Michael and husband Bill, and Betty Mink, all of Mountain City, TN; brothers: Robert S. Walker and wife Gladys of Mountain City, TN, Connie Eggers, and John Eggers and wife Glenda, all of Bethel; grandchildren: Lauren Beuttel, Sydney Glenn, and Evan Glenn; special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Sue Campbell of Mountain City, TN, several nieces and nephews and his co-workers at the Johnson County Highway Department.

The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Steven Spencer to officiate. Special music will be provided by Mr. Steve Williams Graveside service and interment with Military Honors will follow from the Walker Family Cemetery on Reece Hill Road and will be conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary Pallbearers are: James Eastridge, Dr. Jim Shine, Daniel Jones, and nephews.

5816 Martin E. Nave, 87, Elizabethton went home to be with his Lord at the residence of a daughter, Patty Tester with both daughters by his side, Saturday September 17, 2011.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late William Austin and Carrie Lee Treadway Nave.

He was a retired employee of Inland Container.

Mr. Nave served in the Army Air Corps during World War II serving in New Guinea and the Southern Philippines.

He was a member of the Siam Baptist Church and the Mens Fellowship Sunday School Class. His hobby was Wood Crafts.

Mr. Nave was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years Cleo Hardin Nave, September 21, 1997, by a grandson John Martin Tester and six sisters.

Survivors include Two daughters & Sons-In-Law: Carolyn Ann & Barry "Butch" Woodring and Patty Mae & L.C. Tester all of Elizabethton. One Grandson: Mickey Lee Woodring and wife Kim, Elizabethton. Two Great Grandchildren: Matthew Woodring and Rebecca Woodring. A Step-Grandson: Richard Tester, Elizabethton. Two Step-Granddaughters: Pamela & Ashley Tester, his step- Great Granddaughters: Sarajane and Mia Grace Tester. A Brother & sister-in-law: Kenneth "Howard" & Jeanette Nave, Elizabethton. Several Nieces & Nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jack Roddy and Pastor L.C. Tester officiating.

Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Hardin Family Cemetery. Music will be provided by Ashley & Pam Tester and Bill Anderson.

Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday will be: Mickey Woodring, Matthew Woodring, Kevin Grindstaff, Kelly Grindstaff, Howell Carrico and Ricky Babb. Honorary Pallbearers will be his church family.

5817 Marvin B. McKinney, 85, of Johnson City, passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2017, in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital after an extended illness. A native of Mitchell County, NC, he was the son of the late Robert and Maude Wilson McKinney. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Cecil McKinney and Claude McKinney, and several half-bothers and half-sisters.

Survivors include his wife, Bobbie McKinney, one daughter, Karen Garland, and her husband, Richard; one grandson, Matthew Garland, and his wife, Rachel; one great-granddaughter, Olivia; one great-grandson, Will; a sister, Blanche Garland and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. McKinney served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and worked in printing at ETSU at the University Press. He loved God, his church, and his family. He was an active member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening, golf, NASCAR and the Atlanta Braves.

A service to honor the life of Mr. McKinney will be conducted on Sunday, February 12, 2017 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Garry Edwards officiating. Music will provided by Lora Lowe. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1:00 - 3:00 PM on Sunday prior to the service.

5818 Marvin Dayton Wallace, age 81 of Mountain City, TN passed away Thursday January 10, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born on May 2, 1937 in Johnson County, TN to the late Carl Wallace and Thelma Reece Wallace. In addition to his parents Dayton was preceded in death by three sons, Marvin Wallace, Jr., Dwight Wallace and Harry Thompson, his sister Pearl May, brothers, Robert Wallace, Charles Jack Wallace and Loyd Wallace.

Dayton was a United States Army veteran. He retired from Chrysler in Newark, DE. Dayton loved nature, enjoyed his front porch time, watching birds and his neighbors dogs. Those who knew him best know that Dayton enjoyed his morning Brandy.

Dayton is survived by his daughter, Barbara Wallace and fiancé Jay of West Grove, PA, brother, Cecil Wallace of Sweet Home, Oregon, grandchildren, Dana DiBenedetto and husband Salvatore of Landenberg, PA and Shannon Masten and fiancé Chris of Kennett Square, PA, great-grandchildren, Salvatore DiBenedetto and Giavanna DiBenedetto of Landenberg, PA, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by special friends and neighbors, Tish and Delmer Vaught.

The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 14, 2019 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Steven Spencer to officiate. 5819 Mary "Christine" Blevins, lovingly known as "Teenie," died on Tuesday, April 2, 2019, at the age of 93, at her residence in Johnson City, Tennessee.

A native of Jonesborough, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Hugh and Mary Sammons Blevins.

She was a member of the Locust Street Church of Christ for over 80 years. She taught Sunday School for many years and she is fondly remembered by many of her students.

Christine was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Alpha Pi chapter, for over 60 years. Her membership in ESA gave her many "sisters" whose friendships resulted in many activities and trips to conventions.

After graduating from Jonesborough High School, she attended Johnson City Business College for a year and then began what would be her career for over 60 years. She started her career with the Skipworth family in the moving business, then worked for office furniture stores for over 40 years, and lastly, she was a store manager for Budget Office Furniture until her retirement in 2003. The time she spent working in the public afforded her friendships and relationships with many people which she cherished.

Christine's greatest accomplishment was being the "dad" to her sister's children when their father passed away at an early age. She loved these children as her own and moved her personal happiness to the background. Donald, Douglas, David, and Diann loved her in return as their "Dad" and later, their second mother. Their children and grandchildren loved her as "Teenie."

She and her close friend, Stanley, enjoyed a friendship over 50 years, which included UT football games, traveling, movies, and eating out.

In addition to her parents, Christine is preceded in death by: her brother, Harry Blevins; sisters, Bernice Broyles and Carolyn Blevins; nephew, Donald Broyles; great-nieces, Tammie Ruston and Cindy Grubbs; great-great-nephews, Odell Presley and Andrew Wilmot; and her special friend of many years, Stanley Yokum.

Christine is survived by: her nephews, Douglas (Joyce) Broyles, David (Patricia) Broyles, and Russell (Meg) Blevins; nieces, Mary Grubbs, Diann Broyles, and Barbara Broyles; great-nephews, Darryl Broyles and Austin Blevins; great-nieces, Sandi Gary, Jennifer Tester, Scottye Broyles, Brooke Hardy, Sloane Presley, Amanda Blevins, and Alice Blevins; great-great-nephews, Hunter, Eli, Hogan, Kendric, Graylon, John, Shane, and Lane; and great-great-nieces, Payton, MaryGrace, Stella Grace, and Lauren.

A service for Christine will be at 2:30 pm on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home in the Oak Chapel, officiated by Dr. Barry Blackburn. She leaves behind brother: John Mansel Wright, three sons: Troy Lee Coram II, Thomas Scott Treadway and Robert Tucker Treadway, daughters-in-law: Mary Beth Treadway and Candace Michelle Coram, grandchildren: Ava Marie Treadway, Mary Elizabeth Treadway, Robert Tucker Treadway, Jr., Harrison Thames Coram & Atticus Knox Coram, as well as an army of other "adopted children" around the world, whom all addressed her as, "Mama Dootsie" (with one particular, and very special set who addressed her as, "Dootsie Mama.") Dootsie was preceded in death by her daughter: Cynthia Elizabeth Treadway and parents: Harry T. Wright & Nelle Stark Wright.
An avid & brilliant bridge player, Mama Doots will be forever remembered for her brilliant wit, her sass, her incredible chicken & dumplings, her unique passion for bulk buying, her beautiful seasonal decorations... but most importantly, a maternal instinct that attracted legions of friends who adopted her as their second mother. Oh, and she will also be remembered for her outstanding commitment to Velveeta throughout the decades.
Born in Spartanburg, SC, Dootsie, Nelle and adopted father, "Chappie" moved to Johnson City, TN where Chappie served as Chaplain for Mountain Home (Veteran's Administration) from 1946 to 1964. Dootsie's life took her from Johnson City to Knoxville, to Atlanta... back to Middle Tennessee with frequent sojourns in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Mexico... where, even there, the locals called her, "Mama Doots." She made her final home in Hendersonville, NC beginning in 2007.

5822 Mary Alice Chambers (Campbell) passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Ft. Wayne, Ind., on September 30, 2022. She was born on March 24, 1939 in Carter County, Tenn., to the late Omar and Lola Campbell (Timbs).
She was preceded in death by her parents, her late husband, Mack Chambers, and her sisters, Beulah Crow, Daylene Keller and Tom Campbell.
Mary was blessed with a large and loving family.

5823 Mary Alice Hammitt, age 91, left her earthly family on July 29th to be with her heavenly family, at Lakebridge Healthcare, following a lengthy illness.
She was born September 25th, 1921, to John Wesley Ward and Mary Ann Presnell Ward. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Murphy Lee Hammitt, in 1975. She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Dewey, Clifton, Gar and Howard; and by three sisters, Martha Barr, Eve Presnell and Bessie Presnell.
She was a member of Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ and was famous for her delicious soup beans and fantastic biscuits.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law Edna and Mack Presnell, Johnson City; son, Billy Hammitt, Clarksville, Georgia; Brothers, Calvin, Johnson City, James, Erwin, and William Mocksville, N.C.; grandchildren, Dwight and Angela Presnell and Crystal Mitchell, Johnson City; Great grandchildren; Garrison, Sarah Presnell and Cody Mitchell, Johnson City; great great grandson, Preston Mitchell, Johnson City. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: J.D. & Charles Ledford. Sewing was her hobby.

She is survived by her son, Kenneth Trivett and wife Janet of Rembert, South Carolina; one daughter, Teresa Isaacs and husband Larry of Zionville; one sister, Loy Carolyn Guy of Vilas; one granddaughter, three grandsons, eight great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild. 5828 Mary Arnold White, 93, of Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton with her son, Glen White, at her side.
She was born April 7, 1924 to the late Nora and Joseph Daniel Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Lockhart; brother, Stacy Arnold; husband, James Rondal White; daughter, Shelby Bunton; and grandson, David Bunton.
Mary had a long career at the Giant and Food Lion Supermarkets. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Elizabethton and she delighted in being a top seller of dried fruit and fancy nuts each fall for the church's Backpack Ministries' fundraiser.
She is survived by her son, Glen White and wife Vickie, and son-in-law, Billy Bunton of Elizabethton; grandson, Joe White and Debra Chandler of Elizabethton; granddaughter, Donna Bunton and Dave Lynch of Virginia Beach, Va.; great-grandchildren, Eric Afflerbach and Nikki of Miami Beach, Fla., Cara White and Alex White of Elizabethton; and many extended family members and beloved friends who will miss her dearly.

She worked as a sec-re-tary for Clutch and Brake Sup-ply in John-son City for over 20 years.

Mary was an appraiser of antiques and former employee of Eastman-Kodak.
She was a member of the Princeton Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, her husband Vernon H. Jenkins in 1998 and a daughter, Leah Jenkins Cannon in 1980, preceded her in death.

Mary was born on June 7, 1946 in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Raymond Buchanan and the late Georgia Morgan Buchanan.

She graduated Valedictorian from Cranberry High School in 1964 and attended Western Carolina University. She was a loyal Charter Member of the Newland Christian Church, where she served as the Ladies Sunday School Teacher, Treasurer, and worked with the Vacation Bible School. She was a founding member and former President of the Cranberrian Corporation.

A devoted public servant, she retired as the Avery County Tax Collector after 31 years of service, being the last elected Tax Collector in the State of North Carolina. Mary was named Avery County Republican Woman of the Year. Mary enjoyed working in her flower beds, watching hummingbirds and NASCAR. She loved to take care of her children, grandchildren and the rest of her family. Mary was a baptized believer and beloved wife, mother and grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, N.A. "Pat" Daniels; and daughter, Georgina "Chip" Fields.

She was the daughter of the late Johnny and Amanda Wilkins Phipps. She was born in Johnson County, but she lived her whole life in Carter County.
She was a homemaker. She attended College Park Free Will Baptist Church until she wasn?t able to attend due to health.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. D.C. Byrd; two daughters: Bernice Moore and Sharon Street; three brothers: Johnnie, Steve and Peter Phipps; three sisters: Lutishia Phipps, Myrtle Heaton and Lexie Garland.

She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Darrell and Cinda Byrd; two sons-in-law, Fred Moore and Richard Street; four granddaughters and their husbands, Kristi and Kevin Colbaugh, Kara and Josh McGee, Dawn and Rev. Nathan Jennings, Mandy and Wes Greer; eight great grandchildren, Nick, Tyler, Kaylee, Ashlee, Abby, Shay, Riley and Elisha; one brother, Coy Phipps; sister-in-laws, Lena Phipps, Georgia King and Ida Hanuvoski; and one brother-in-law, D.H. Byrd and his wife, Betty; several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

The family will receive friends Saturday, June 30, 2012, from 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Morris-Baker Funeral Home with services immediately following at 8:00 p.m. with Rev Nathan Jennings and Rev. Ray Colbaugh officiating. Music will be provided by Wes and Mandy Greer, Megan Harsh and New Liberty Quartet.

Burial will be held at Monte Vista Memorial Park, Sunday, July 1, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Pallbearers will be: Kevin Colbaugh, Josh McGee, Wes Greer, Nick Colbaugh, Tyler Carrier, Ron Barnett, Ronnie Heaton. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of her and Rev. Byrd?s former Churches and employees of Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

The family would like to thank Judy Deloach and the staff of Ivy Hall for the loving and wonderful care they gave our Mother and Grandmother while she was there. Their kindness and compassion will never be forgotten.

5834 Mary C. "Toots "Dunn, age 87 of 1629 Forge Creek Road in Mountain City, Tennessee passed away at her residence on Saturday, May 4, 2019. Toots was born on June 9, 1931 in Johnson County, Tennessee to the late James Herman Ward and Anna Mae Mast Ward. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, Dana Dale Dunn, an infant daughter Mary Ruth Dunn, and 2 sisters, Mildred Dunn and Maryland Ward. She was a member of the Nelsons Chapel Baptist Church and loved gardening and her cats. She was retired from Levi Strauss and Leco.

Survivors include, Nephews Ray Dunn, Lester Dunn, Ronnie Dunn, and Wayne Jones; Niece Bridgett Dunn; Great Nieces, Crystal Dunn and Jenny Estep, and Great Nephew Jeff Dunn; several Great-Great Nephews and Nieces.

A graveside service for Toots Dunn will be conducted on Tuesday May 7th, 2019, at 2pm from The Sunset Memorial Park with Rev. Richard Stout officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm until 2 pm.

5835 Mary C. Blevins, age 88, of Shady Valley, TN passed away on Monday February 27, 2017 at her residence. She was born November 29, 1928 in Perry County, KY to the late Doc Campbell and Emma Huff Campbell. In addition to her parents Mary was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Ray Blevins.

Mary had a great passion for flowers, especially irises. She was an accomplished Quilter and had received numerous awards.

Mary was a life-long member of Shady Valley Church of Christ.

She is survived by her faithful and loving husband of 65 years, Cline Ray Blevins; her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sisters and brothers and special family friend who was like a brother, Ned Blevins. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 1- 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 2, 2017 from Mountain City Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Tom Reece and Wayne Baker officiating. Pallbearers will be Haskell McQueen, Olan Bentley, Jim Sherman, Clifford Watson, Roger Blevins and Charles Townsend. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Raina Sluder, Staff of Amedysis Home Health and Amedysis Hospice, who the family would like to express their appreciation and gratitude to each of them for all of their acts of care and kindness. 5836 Mary Cathryn Estep passed away on February 22, 2018. Born in Avery County and residing there for most of her life, she was a truly selfless person that served the area as a medical professional.

"Cat" (as many knew her) was one of the first people in North Carolina to be licensed as a Nurse Practitioner. She worked at Sloop Memorial Hospital, Cannon Memorial Hospital, and Guy Medical Clinic. Many of her patients called her "Dr. Mom" because she cared for them like a mother cares for her family. She always put the needs of others before her own and was well-respected by the medical professionals she worked alongside.

Mary Cathryn was a woman of God and lived her life as a shining example of His teachings. She made the world a better place. Granny Cat had a special and different relationship with each of her grandchildren and she was a wonderful mother to Mike, Becky and Kathy.

Mary Cathryn was an avid UNC Tar Heel fan. She knew every player and, through her TV, coached them each game.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Omar and Sammy Thompson; husband: Landon (Bud) Estep; two infant sons: David and Stevie Estep; brothers: Sam and Edwin Thompson; and sister: Joyce Thompson Cooper. She is survived by son: Mike (Mary Ann) Estep of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; daughters: Becky Corder of Port Aransas, Texas, and Kathy Carroll of Weaverville, NC; sisters: Shirley (David) Morgan of Bradenton, Fla., Pat (Don) Julian of Roan Mountain, Tenn., and Sally (Roger) Morgan of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; grandchildren: Mike Estep Jr, John Colborn, Monica (Philip) Condrey, Zak, Zoe, and Zane Carroll; great grandson: Landon Estep; great-great granddaughter: Emory Estep; a host of nieces and nephews, and very special friends: Paul and Linda Crinkley.

After retiring from her medical career, Mary visited the home-bound and others that needed care, comfort, or even simply company and compassion. She considered this her mission and her pleasure. A fund has been established through the First Baptist Church of Crossnore to fund and continue her work. Services for Mary Catherine Estep were held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018, at Crossnore Baptist Church, with Dr. Phil Murdock and Rev. Mark Potter officiating.

5837 Mary Charlotte Whisnant, 91, of Hampton, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late James and Maggie Ellen Nave.
Charlotte was an active member of Eastside Baptist Church and loved to sing in her church choir. Charlotte enjoyed cooking, canning and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carmon Whisnant; a son, Terry Allen Whisnant; and two brothers, W.J. Nave and Dennis Nave.
Those left to cherish her memory include her three daughters, Carmen Dianne Nelson of Johnson City, Ellen Charlene Bateman of Hampton and Tammy Lynn Collins and husband Kevin of Elizabethton; two sisters, Betty Casida and Carol Davis, both of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Todd Nelson and wife Julie, Travis Nelson, Shane Bateman, Amber Hall and husband Jamie and Adam Collins and wife Emily; and one great-grandson, George Carmon Nelson. 5839 Mary Colleen Hawkins Greene, age 89, passed from this life to life everlasting on May 29, 2018. She was a long time member of Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church and attended as long as her health permitted.

Colleen accepted Christ early in life. A woman of deep faith and a devoted Christian, she will be remembered by all who knew her as a strong prayer warrior, a kind and loving wife, mother, friend and neighbor, who lived out her days in quietness and confidence in her Lord and Savior.

Survivors include her loving and devoted son: Richard A. Greene II (Richie), the joy of her life; two sisters-in-law: Shirley Greene Stephenson of Greeneville and Janice Hawkins of Mountain City; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and a loving and dedicated friend, Julia Peters.

She was the daughter of the late Wiley F. Hawkins and Vada Carrie Neatherly Hawkins of Mountain City, Tennessee and was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years: Richard Arvil Greene; brother: Dayton Hawkins of Mountain City; father-in-law and mother-in-law: Oscar T. and Carrie Tilson Greene; brother-in-law: J.N. Stephenson; sister-in-law and brother-in-law: Evelyn and Ernest Campbell; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Klon and Frances Greene and Brumley and Jane Greene.

The funeral service was held Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Mt. Hebron United Methodist Church with interment in the church cemetery.

5840 Mary Deloach Cassar, 81, Salisbury, North Carolina, passed away Friday, December 11, 2009, at Autumn Care in Salisbury, NC.

Born April 14, 1928, in Johnson County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Stella Grindstaff Deloach.

She retired from the food service industry after 45 years of service and along with her late husband, Renard, were active members of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church in Gray, Tennessee. She has been a resident of Salisbury, NC for ten years and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Renard (Ron) Cassar, on December 21, 1976, and by five brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by her three daughters, Rebecca Terry and her husband, Glenn, of Salisbury, NC, Stella Isenberg and her husband, Roy, of Gray, Tennessee, Sharon Pontius and her husband, Brian, of Raleigh, NC; two sisters, Laura and Elmina Deloach, and a brother, Floyd Deloach, all from Elizabethton, Tennessee; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton, Tennessee.

Burial will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton, TN. Reverend Gene Lasley of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church will be officiating.

Mary was a United States Army veteran and of the Christian faith. She was a talented seamstress and also enjoyed crocheting, fishing, camping and riding motorcycles. She was born in Johnson County, TN on October 10, 1925 to the late Joe Norris and Ila Reece Norris. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Burnis Horne; daughter, Lois Marie Cress; sisters: Laura Sue Norris, Josephine Revelle and Catherine Absher and brothers: Junior Clay Norris, Mack Norris, and Jimmy Dean Norris.

Mary loved working in her flowers, yard work, and gardening. She also enjoyed crocheting and quilting. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

5846 Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Watson, Age 87, parted from the arms of her loving family into the arms of her Heavenly Father on Monday, November 22, 2021, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.
She was the daughter of the late Robert Wright (Jack) Smalling and Pearl Blevins Smalling and a lifelong resident of Johnson City. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years Gerald Watson in 2009, a sister Bobbie Phipps, and a brother Jimmy Smalling.
Betty was a seamstress and made clothes for her family including a wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister as well as a good friend to many. She was a member of Borderview Christian Church in Elizabethton, TN. She leaves behind to honor and cherish her memory a son and “daughter” Steve and Norma Watson of Johnson City; daughter and caregiver Michele Watson Adkins of Johnson City; daughter Kay Atkins of Cambridge, England; and a special stepdaughter Delores Patterson of Jonesborough, TN.; two grandsons Zac and Steven Atkins of England; three sisters Pat Webb of Jonesborough, TN., Pam King and Margaret Britt of Johnson City; two brothers Jack and Wayne Smalling of Johnson City; special cousin Sue Oler who was considered a sister, five step grandchildren Rhonda Yates; Joy Smith; Chuck, Roger, and Willie Patterson; several nieces and nephews, and special friends Chuck and Hazel Barber.
What gave Betty the most joy was being a stay at home mom in her children’s formative years. She was so proud of them for who they are, their work ethic, and their integrity.

5847 Mary Ellen (Godsey) Cowan, born May 31, 1940, walked through the Gates of Heaven on Monday, December 23, 2019.

A lifelong native of Johnson City, she is the daughter of the late James Thomas and Beulah Vashti (Sutphin) Godsey. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, William T. Cowan; brothers, Ralph Edward Godsey and David Lowry Godsey; and granddaughter, Heather Pate Rutledge.

Mary loved her family and friends and was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church and loved serving her Lord and Savior. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Nolichuckey Grand View # 194, and would have been a member 30 years in January 2020. Mary retired from Snap-On Tools in Elizabethton after nineteen years.

5848 Mary Ellen Brown, age 94, of Mountain City, TN went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Mountain City Care Center.
She was born May 22, 1919 to the late Millard Jethro Hammons and Mattie Virginia Stewart Hammons. She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Johnson County.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Brown, by her son, Albert Brown, and by sisters Gladys Arnold and Marie Hall. Mrs. Brown was a member of Hammons Chapel Christian Church. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, reading, and especially enjoyed word search puzzles.
Survivors include her daughter, Phyllis Farmer and husband Earl of Mountain City, TN, grandchildren Randy Farmer and wife Betty of Damascus, VA, Rita Horne and husband Mike of Wetumpka, AL, Rick Farmer and special friend Lawrence Dietrich of Atlanta, GA, Lisa Farmer of Mountain City, TN, step great-grandson Brandon Lipford of Damascus, VA, great-grandchildren Jared Horne, Matthew Horne, Casey Sutherland and Tripp Farmer (father-Mike Farmer), great-great grandchildren Haley Green, Allison Green, Chloe Sutherland and Gage Lipford. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The family would also like to recognize special friends Nell Arnold and family and the late Lillian Hawkins and family.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Monday, January 20, 2014 from the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Joshua Giddings and Daniel Jones officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 - 7:00 PM prior to the funeral service.
The graveside service and interment will be at 11:00 AM on Tuesday at Dunn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rick Farmer, Jack Hall, Blake Sutherland, Willie Hammons, Boyd Hammons and Bill Hammons. 5849 Mary Emily Hoilman, age 82 of Laurel Street, Bakersville, NC went home to be with the Lord, September 29, 2016. She was a native of Johnson City, TN and the daughter of the late Dave and Rosa Lee Livingston Walker.

She attended Mine Creek Baptist Church. Mary loved taking care of her family and friends and was known for her excellent cooking. She was retired as a cook at Mitchell County Senior Center, and formerly worked as Lunchroom Manager at Gouge School in Bakersville, NC, and later at Appalachian Christian Village in Johnson City, TN.

She was preceded in death by: her husband; Claude Hoilman Jr., son; Terry E. Hoilman, granddaughter; Lisa Hoilman Cooper, sisters; Martha Jackson, Edith Carder, and Ida Lee Kelsey; brothers, Mack Walker and Robert Walker and two infant siblings.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 12:00 Noon at Bakersville Memorial Cemetery with Chris Rathbone and Skip Weiford officiating. Interment will follow the service.

5850 Mary Emma Brown passed away at the age of 93 on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at the Cornerstone Village.

Emy was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton, a dedicated public school teacher for over 35 years, and a graduate of East Tennessee State Teachers College. A loving wife, mother and grandmother, Mary Emma was devoted to her family; always ready to entertain a child with a string trick or set out on a blueberry picking adventure. A gracious hostess, she always delighted in entertaining family and friends. Her contributions to the community were never forgotten by the countless students she taught over the years. Out on the town, it was a regular occurrence for a former student to stop and tell her what an influence she had been to his or her life.

She is preceded in death by her husband George S. Brown; her parents Judge W.R. Allen and wife Laura Renfro Allen; eight siblings: Judge Ben Allen, Kate Allen Clemons, Annie B. Allen, Laura Allen Thomas, Lena Allen Taylor, Howard Allen, R. J. Allen, and Floyd Allen. She is survived by two sons Lynn W. Brown (partner, Carol Carr) and Sutton Brown (spouse, Beverly Brown); four grandchildren: Laura Brown, Whitman Brown, Taylor Brown, and Benjamin Brown; four great-grandchildren; and a very special cousin Elizabeth Allen.
