5651 Lucille Evelyn Cox Heaton, 94, of Elizabethton, Tenn., started singing in God’s heavenly choir October 11, 2021. She was born in Knoxville, Tenn., March 22, 1927 to the late Ethridge Cox and Lillie Elrod Cox. After marrying the love of her life, she made Elizabethton her treasured home and was so grateful for all God blessed her with in this life. Her secret to joy: she loved Jesus, her family, friends, making flowers bloom, painting, this amazing America, QVC and chocolate every day!
She was the epitome of a lady, yet had that mischievous gleam in her eye. Lucy was eccentric, funny, opinionated, gutsy, energetic and a true beauty inside and out. She trusted Jesus but kept a .22 hanging on her bedpost along with her dream catcher. Lucy was an artist in all she did; a flair for drama and oh how she could wear a hat!
If you were her friend, it was forever. If you were her family, you better not cross them.
She loved to sing, especially with her friends in the choir at First Baptist Church, who she lovingly referred to as “The Joyful Sinners” always with a little grin and shrug of her shoulders in good humor.
Lucy had a servant-heart that gave generously. PTA, Girl Scouts, helping raise money for causes dear to her heart. For years she shopped for people at Ivy Hall and drove the “Meals on Wheels“ van.
She cherished the privilege of being part of the live drama “Liberty” that commemorated the pioneers of this area. Lucy enjoyed every minute of the 21 years with it.
She longed to see those who waited for her in the presence of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Claude Cox and Dean Cox; sister, Barbara Livesay; loving husband, Stanley Heaton; son, Dennis Heaton; and plus loads of kith and kin.
Lucy’s family left here that miss her: Jana Rasnick and husband Bobby; Deborah Timko and husband Barry; Betty Lipscomb, Pam Heaton; grandchildren, Mackenzie Fugett and Brad, Meghan Heaton, Rachel Gregory and Paul, Jennifer Buck and Eric, Matthew Rasnick and Jessee, Robyn Fuder and David, Jeremiah Douglas, Blair Blycker and Jonathan, Ammi Hepler and Andy, Lori Lipscomb and Andy, Rebecca Rudd and Billy; sisters, Shirley Rucker and Willard, Carol Tolliver and Harold; brother, Roger Cox; and oodles of great-grandchildren, cousins and dear friends.
To celebrate our precious Lucy, there will be a private graveside service Saturday, October 23, at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

5670 Luther was the son of Sherman Alexander and Callie Elizabeth Johnson Wallace. He was a charter member of the Hampton Masonic Lodge No.750 F.&A.M. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He retired from Beaunit Corp.in 1959. He was also a farmer. He was married for 58 years to Lillian Belle Stevens Wallace. They had 3 sons, Arnold Vernon, Gene B., Cail Richard and 4 daughters, Thelma Bell, Erma Burgess, Beatrice Hyder and Wilma Roberts. Wallace, Luther Garfield (I66148)

5671 Lydian's third marriage was to Clayton Palmer. Lydian and Clayton had nine children, Clifton, Walter, Etta, Joseph, Zora, May, Oscar and Noah.

Lydian also had two children from two previous relationships. Her first affair was with a Andrew Cooper and they had "Cart" (Cooper) Winters. I don't believe they ever married and her son took her maiden name.

Relationship two was to Monroe Hayes. Their son was William Martin Hayes. We found a marriage certificate for this union dated the day after the birth of their son. However, the marriage was short lived. Will Hayes was born in 1878 and Monroe was back living in his parents household in Carter County, TN in the 1880 Census. Will Hayes never had a relationship with his Hayes family during his lifetime. He was primarily raised by his grandparents, Martin Winters and Nancy Hicks Winters, after Lydian's marriage to Clayton Palmer.

5684 Mable Andes Snavely died Saturday, October 8, 2022 surrounded by family. Mamaw was one-of-a-kind. She loved fiercely, worked hard, and was honest to a fault. She loved her church family and faithfully attended Borderview Christian Church. For Mamaw, each day began with her Jesus Calling devotional and time spent with God in the Bible. Death did not rob her from us. Indeed, at 98 years old, she has simply graduated to her real home to her true spouse Jesus Christ, who had a place ready-and-waiting for her in heaven.

Mamaw loved to play any kind of game, and would rub-it-in when she won. She loved traveling and could have a bag packed to “hit the road” in minutes. Mamaw knew that all the good we experience in life points to the perfection she now experiences with her Savior. Her life was a testament that true blessings are not material.

Mamaw was rich in that God had graciously blessed her with a wonderful and extensive family. The mother of three girls, Mamaw leaves behind Joyce and Phil Grindstaff, Susie McLeod, and June and John Gouge. Grandchildren include Wendy and Jeff Salyers; Jennifer and David Martin; Julie and Jon Wilcox; Scott and Marla McLeod; Kym and David Townsend; Tim and Carla McLeod; Heather and Levon Mouradian; and Andrew and Lindsey Gouge. Mable is preceded in death by her husband, James Ray Snavely (Jim), great-grandson Adam Martin, two brothers, four sisters, and her parents, Joseph Andes and Sarah Elizabeth Potter Andes, and her dear friend, Earl Ellis.

Lipford, Roxie Mae (I691)

5699 Mae Smith of Newland passed away at the age of 84 on June 28, 2018.

She was born in Heaton, NC on April 24, 1934, the daughter of the late Frank and Dorothy Johnson Laws. Mae was a lover of games and stories. For most of her career she worked with children, at both the Banner Elk Child Development Center and Avery County Schools. She taught them the wonders of using your imagination and being creative. Mae shared her love of nature and animals with her students, her children and grandchildren.

Her enthusiasm and passion for nature and camping were contagious. Mae's love for her students was heard in the many stories she shared of their accomplishments and how proud she was of them each time they reached a new milestone.

If you asked any of her grandchildren, they would tell you they learned to know and love fairies, insects and creepy crawlies from observing them with their Mama Mae/Nana. She shared this earth with them, but more importantly, she taught them if they loved the earth and cared for it, the earth would provide and love them back. Mae loved a good joke and she could spin a tale that would leave her audience spellbound. Anyone fortunate enough to spend time with her knew just how mesmerizing her storytelling could be. She could pull you in and make you a part of the story with just her words and animated expressions. You could not help but be as excited about the outcome as she was.

It was difficult to go anywhere in Avery County without a child or young adult screaming out "Hey Miss Mae," or stopping her to tell how much she meant to them and how they loved being one of her students. She was a firm believer in trying and tasting new things in life. Even if she would sometimes scoff at the idea, she would give it a go, just so she could say she tried. If you were playing a game with Mae and won, then you truly earned it. She believed in playing by the rules and if you won, you earned the title "winner."

Mae was extremely proud of and survived by her four children; Daughters: Deborah (Debby) Gwyn and Tonyah Gwyn, both of Newland, and her "Angel Baby," Davie Smith of Heaton; and Son: Doran Gwyn (Elizabeth) of Carmel, Ind. Mae passed her love of reading, gardening, camping and singing a folk song or two on to all her children. Each of them has a special gift because of her.

Her four grandchildren: Candy Gwyn of Dallas, Texas, Shawn Gwyn (Brittany) and Travis Gwyn (Kate) of Carmel, Ind., and Cacee Gwyn (Robin) of Duluth, Ga., spent many hours camping, playing games, watching bugs, walking trails and playing in creeks as well as with action figures, miniature cars and airplanes whenever they had the chance to spend some time with their Mama Mae/Nana.

Mae also loved and cherished her four great-grandchildren: Annelise and Isaac Gwyn-Hutchison of Dallas, Texas, Dominic Gwyn of Heaton, and Ryder and Gracee Olson-Gwyn of Duluth, Ga.

In addition to her parents, Mae was preceded in death by three of her siblings: brothers Coleman and Elmer Laws, and her sister, Faye Cannon.

She is survived by three siblings: Barbara Ann Sparks of Heaton, Lawrence Laws (Lolita) of Elk Valley and Billy Laws (Thelma) of Altamont. Mae loved and admired her siblings. She lovingly shared stories of their lives together. Mae was also blessed with many loving nieces and nephews.

She was a native of Avery County, living in several other states, she returned to the mountains she loved and raised her family here, enjoying her career working with children.
