5251 Judy Lynne Dyson Vann, 60, of Elizabethton, Tennessee passed away and went to be with her Lord Tuesday, September 5th at Johnson City Medical Center.

She enjoyed working her booth at the Tri Cities flea markets for the past seventeen yeas and making and selling jewelry. She was preceded in death by her Parents Thomas Claude Dyson and Grace Taylor Dyson.

Son Matthew Anthony Vann. Brother Steve Dyson and Sisters Peggy Dunn and Joan Dunn. 5252 Judy Mae Bowers, 76, Elizabethton, went to be with her Lord, Sunday, October 10, 2021, at Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness. She was born December 18, 1944 to the late Coolidge and Ethel Estep Bowers.
In earlier years, Judy was employed at the East Tennessee Chair Company. Later she was employed as a house keeper. She loved cleaning her house, watching Fox News and loved to listen to Southern Gospel Music. She was a member of East Side Freewill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Shelia Payne and Darla Bowers.
Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Dewey Bowers; three children, Jeffrey (Barbara) Bowers and Pam (Bryon) Gouge, all of Elizabethton, and Tina (Bobby) Miller, Siloam, N.C.; five grandchildren, Jeff “Skeeter” Bowers, Megan Buckles, Lacey Pasquale, Erica Riggs and Daniel Miller; one great-granddaughter, Kelsey Pasquale; two brothers, Terry Bowers and Kelly (Lynn) Bowers; and two sisters, Kathy (Bill) Hyder and Debra Crouse. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 13, in the Bowers Cemetery (Roy Bowers Road) with her son-in-law, Bryon Gouge, officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

5254 Judy Nave Snyder, age 84, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, January 23, 2012 at the Watauga Medical Center. She was born on June 12, 1927 to the late Edward and Margaret 'Maggie' Arnold Nave. In addition to her parents, Judy was preceded in death by two sisters, Adlee Lane and Ella Mae Goodwin; and two brothers, Earl Nave and Shelton Nave.

Judy loved to read and loved to go sight-seeing and travel. She was a member of Liberty Christian Church.

Judy is survived by her husband of 67 years, Alex Snyder; daughter, Kathy Greever of Mountain City, TN; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Helen Snyder of Mountain City, TN; sister, Louise Russom of Mountain City, TN; grandchildren, Amanda Greever of Louisville, TN, Chad Greever and wife Amber, Tracy Snyder and wife Wendy, Rebekkah Davenport and husband Charles, all of Mountain City, TN; great grandchildren, Trey Snyder and Emily Snyder and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends from 1-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with the funeral service following at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Steven Spencer officiating. Music was under the direction of Sherry Tester.

Graveside service and interment followed at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Pallbearers were Chad Greever, Tracy Snyder, Chuck Davenport, John Verplank, Larry Snyder, Bill Worley. Honorary Pallbearers were Jack Elswick and Jim Hutchinson.

5255 Julia J. McKeehan, 81, of Rt. 4, Elizabethton, died at her home at 9:15 p.m. Tuesday following an extended illness.
Miss McKeehan was a native of Carter county and a daughter of the late John M. and Almeda Barrier McKeehan. She was a member of the Oak Grove Christian Church.
Survivors are seven nieces: Miss Wilma McKeehan, with whom she made her home' Mrs. Wanda Adams, Mrs. Maxine Little and Mrs. Mildred Rhea, all of Elizabethton,; Mrs. Dorothy Clement, Cheyenne, Who.; Miss Leota Brummitt and Miss Evelyn Brummitt, both of Rt. 2, Johnson City; three nephews: Roy L. McKeehan, Bristol, Va.; Wayne Livingston, Unicoi, and Ralph Livingston, Elizabethton.
Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
McKEEHAN--Funeral services for Julia J. McKeehan, 81, of Rt. 4, Elizabethton, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Douglas Hardin, Minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Georgia Cox, organist, and Lewis Garrison, soloist. Burial will be in Happy Valley Memorial Park.
Active pallbearers: Jimmy Livingston, Bobby Livingston, Danny Little, Lynn Adams, Gary Rhea and Kenneth Sharett. Flowerbearers will be friends and neighbors.
The body will remain in the funeral home chapel where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday. Friends may call at the chapel and at the home anytime.

5256 Julia Reece Edmisten, 101, of Sugar Grove, widow of Carl D Edmisten, died Wednesday morning, April 21, 1993 at her home.

She was born September 22, 1891, in the Beech Creek Community of Watauga County, a daughter of the late Isaac and Mary Church Reece. She was a member of Heaton Christian Church.

Survivors include two daughters, and one son. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, 10 great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Lena Edmisten and a great-grandson, Mr. Kent Harmon.

Services were Friday afternoon at Beech Valley Baptist Church. Officiating were the Rev. Bill Warren and the Rev. Quincy Norris. Burial followed in the Beech Creek Community Church Cemetery.

5257 Julia Thompson Benfield, 78, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at her residence.

Julia was born on February 16, 1944 in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Charles Roscoe Thompson and the late Lola Taylor Thompson.

She loved to paint, and was known for her beautiful paintings she would share with her friends and family. Julia enjoyed being in her garden and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her Husband, Julian Lee Benfield; father, Charles Roscoe Thompson; mother, Lola G Thompson; two sisters, Clara Shaw McKinney, Martha Benfield; two brothers, Ray Thompson, Junior Thompson.

Julia leaves behind to cherish her memory two sons, Jeff (April) Benfield of Newland, NC, Tim (Angie) Benfield of Newland, NC; sister, Elizabeth (Mike) Rice of Old Fort, NC; brother, Wade (Cindy) Thompson of Elk Park, NC; two sister-in-laws, Joyce Brewer of Newland, NC, Gina Barrier of Morganton, NC; grandchildren, Cassandra (Chad) Bare, Ashley (Billy) Johnson, Emily (Jason) Winters, Josh (Natasha) Benfield, Jordan Benfield; Great Grandchildren, Gavin, Adalynn, Lily, Mila, Birdie, River, Flynt, and Kohen.

5260 Julia “Bug” Burleson, 70, of Three Mile, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 5, 2021 at Memorial Mission Hospital.

A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Boyd and Rosalee “Bobby” Carpenter Ollis. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ted Burleson; brothers: Jess Lee and Joseph Ollis and son-in-law, Johnny Sheppard. Julia loved traveling, enjoyed going to Dollywood, reading, word search puzzles, yard sales and making new friends. She adored her family.

Surviving is her daughter, Joann Renfro and husband, Rick, of Green Mountain; son, John Burleson and wife, Mary, of Linville Falls; grandchildren: Haley Dutton, Jackie Sheppard and Ashley Sheppard (Josh); great-grandchildren: Mason, Alaina, Mackenzie and Asher; sister, Janice Ingram; brother, Jack Ollis and wife, Glenna, and her dog, Mia. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 11, 2021 in Henson Creek Baptist Church. The Rev. Junior Carver officiated. Burial followed in the Pittman Cemetery.

5261 Julie Rose Muse, beloved sister, aunt and friend passed away from this life on Thursday, October 20, 2022, at her residence after several years of declining health.

She was born to J.C. Muse Jr. and Grace Archer Muse April 14, 1958, in Mountain City, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers Jody and Archer Muse.

After graduating from Johnson County High School in 1976, where she excelled on the inaugural tennis team, she began work at Kingsport Dental Lab. Julie worked for her uncles, Kenneth and Fred Archer, learning the industry from them. She took pride in providing high quality dental prosthetics for many regional dentists. After many years of working, she became the sole owner of Kingsport Dental Lab.

Julie enjoyed watching a variety of sports on TV, especially tennis and the Lady Vols. Julie had a heart of gold and was extremely generous to her family, friends and employees throughout her life. She was especially proud of her nieces and nephews and was always urging them on to success. Julie loved her family and friends fiercely and enjoyed her time with them.

She is survived by sisters, Margaret Briscoe (Jack) of Memphis and Luanne Hoilman (Danny) of Johnson City; sister in law, Judy (Mike) of Kingsport; nieces: Grace McKinney (Craig) of Los Angeles, Sage Magid (Aaron) of Elkridge, Lindsey Gastright (Andrew) of St. Petersburg; nephews: Allan Muse (Evee) of Kingsport, Paul Hoilman (Emma) of Johnson City, Scott Hoilman of Johnson City; great nieces: Rainie and Lizzie Hunter, Callie Muse, Adar Briscoe-Magid, Kathryn Hoilman (her “precious”); great nephews: Bruce Hunter and Westin Gastright.

Julie helped and touched many people with her thoughtfulness and will be missed tremendously!

5262 Julius Charles "J.C." Puckett Sr., 88, of Newland, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Cannon Memorial Hospital.
A native of Avery County, he was born April 2, 1923, a son of the late Grover and Maggie Gwyn Puckett. He enjoyed turkey shoots, taking care of his garden and collecting guns. Along with his parents, Puckett was preceded in death by his: Sons, Jay C.Puckett and David Puckett; daughter, Ruby Louise Puckett; grandson, Morris Puckett. Puckett has left to cherish his memory his: Daughter, Edna Puckett Campbell and husband David of Erwin, Tenn.; sons, Charles J. Puckett Jr. and wife Sandra of Newland, Larry Puckett and wife Glenna also of Newland; brother, Grover Puckett Jr. of San Francisco, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandson.

On Thursday, December 1, Betty went home peacefully to meet Jesus and His saints.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gaines E. Royston and Maggie Littleford Royston; siblings, Arlie, Howard, George "GW", Clyde, Floyd, Molissie Royston Collins, and Mary Lee Royston Grindstaff. She was also preceded in death by her former husband, Roy C. Hodges.

Betty is survived by: her three children, Bobby Hodges of Johnson City, Sharon Alvis and her husband Bill of Jonesborough, and Jeff Hodges and his wife Bonnie of Morganton, NC; five grandchildren, Angela Johnson of Baltimore, MD, Justin Alvis and wife Cicely of Jonesborough, Tamana Phillips and husband Kenny of Gastonia, NC, Tina Karst and husband Chris of Fort Worth, TX, and Katelyn Lee and husband Corey of Morganton, NC; eight great grandchildren, Gaines William Johnson, Austin, Blake, and Dalton Phillips, Skyler, Hunter, and Trenton Karst, and much anticipated great granddaughter, McKenna Ruth Lee, to arrive in January 2017. She is also survived by sisters-in-law, Lillian Royston and Opal Royston; special friend, Kelly Johnson; niece and caregiver, Susie Grindstaff; as well as many more nieces and nephews.

Betty was fun loving and a free spirit. She was a follower of Jesus, always smiling, praying for and encouraging others. She was a member of Boone Trail Baptist Church where she was a former choir member and Sunday school teacher. Betty was a previous resident of West Palm Beach, FL where she left many cherished friends. She loved spending time with her family and her cherished Tuesday card group (Sara, Karen, Carmen, and Pat), and never missed an opportunity to tell a joke. Betty enjoyed traveling, especially cruises, and has now embarked upon an eternal journey with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

The family plans a Celebration of Life service for Tuesday, December 27, 2016 6:00 PM. Details will be forthcoming at Boone Trail Baptist Church.

5264 Juna Mae Harmon, 92, of Johnson City, entered the presence of her loving Savior on December 10, 2018, at Life Care Center of Elizabethton. Juna Mae was born May 31, 1926, in the Shell Creek community of Carter County and lived most of her life in Johnson City. She lived in Flint, Mich., for many years where she worked for General Motors until her retirement in 1982 when she moved back to Johnson City to be near family.
Juna Mae was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Leota Stout Harmon; her brother, James Arnold Harmon, and his wife, Mildred Whittington Harmon; and her sister, Naomi Winters Slate.
She is survived by six nieces and one nephew, Gail Harmon Crowe, Cathy Harmon Castle, June Harmon Rominger, Carol Ann Winters Kendrick, Dinah Winters Taylor, Marcella Winters Howard and Doug Winters; many great-nieces and great-nephews; and a special friend, Brenda Kish.
As a member of West Side Christian Church, Elizabethton, Juna Mae was a blessing to those with whom she came in contact. She loved participating in anything going on in the life of the church. Juna Mae had a "green thumb," and could make anything grow and thrive. She had beautiful flowers around her home — inside and out. She also loved to sew and often made clothes, blankets, etc., for others. She also loved to cook and bake and often took food to shut-ins. There was not a recipe she would not try. She was a former member of the Community Club in Johnson City. She loved the outdoors and would often go for hikes on trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway.
In the last several years while living at Life Care of Elizabethton, Juna Mae was lovingly known as "The Hat Lady," donning a themed hat for every occasion. Seeing the smiles on people's faces as they saw her different hats brought her so much joy! She was an outstanding Christian woman of faith, a devoted sister, sister-in-law, aunt, daughter and friend to others. She had a twinkle in her eye and a quick wit. She will be dearly missed by all her loved ones and friends.
The funeral service for Juna Mae will be held Saturday, December 15, at 2 p.m., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Mr. Greg Key, minister, officiating. A musical tribute will be provided by Tony Rominger and Scott Reynolds. The graveside committal service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

Lee Roy McGuire, 100, of Wilson, N.C., passed away Sunday, April 22, 2018. He was a native of Watauga County and lived there for much of his life.
Lee was the last surviving of 14 children of William and Lou Wright McGuire. He served his country with honor and pride during WWII, serving in the Asian Theatre and the occupational force in Germany following the war. After retirement from the Air Force, he continued to serve his country through a second career at the Library of Congress, retiring as a Lieutenant in the police force.
Lee is survived by his daughter, Sylvia McGuire Tucker, of the home, and sons, Richard McGuire of Elm City, Leonard McGuire of Palm Springs, Calif., and David McGuire and wife, Susan, of Annandale, Va.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Annie Louiza McGuire.
The funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at Austin Barnes Funeral Home, 194 Queen Street, Boone. Interment will follow immediately at Mt. Lawn Memorial Park, 521 Old East King Street, Boone, with Military Honors.

"The sudden death of Mr. L.C. Garrison, which ocurred at his home early Sunday morning, was a distinct shock to relatives and friends. Mr. Garrison, who was known to all as "Lum", had worked as usual on Saturday and had not complained before retiring on Saturday night, but just before daylight Sunday morning he awakened his wife and son, telling them he was sick. The son, June, hurried to get a doctor, but before his return Mr. Garrison had passed away. His daughters who live her were summoned but so sudden was his passing that they were unable to reach him before he died. Asthma and heart trouble were probably the causes of his death. He was 68 years of age.

Besides his wife, who was a Miss Hicks, and the son who lives at home MR. Garrison is survived by another son, Herbert B. Garrison, of Roanoke, Va', who came home at once in response ro the message announcing his father's death, and three daughters Mrs. Sam Pollard (Clara), Mrs. Tom Fleming, and Mrs. C.B. Kincaid, all of Morganton.The funeral services, conducted by Rev. W.R. Bradshaw, were held Monday afternoon at Mt. Home Baptist church and interment made in the church yard there.

Mr. Garrison was one of Morganton's best known citizens. His homely philosophy and unfailing good humor made him the center of every group into which he happened to drift. He was a unique character and his comment along light and serious lines was always interesting. He will be greatly missed in Morganton."

He was once quoted as advising then-representative Sam Ervin, Jr. that we "pass no more laws and repeal half of those we had."

Minister and Wife Die Near Same Hour

Saturday Mr. and Mrs A.S. Peery, Richard Peery and W.M.
Peery, of Bluefield, Va., and Miss Maola Newberry, arrived
at Trade, Tenn., to attend the funeral of the Rev. and Mrs.
Thomas W. Arnold.
Mrs. Arnold, 91, died at eight o'clock Friday morning.
Her husband, 85, who had been ill of pneumonia, was advised
by a son of the death of Mrs. Arnold. The aged minister
called her name and told his son that he was going with her.
That night as the clock struck ten, Mr. Arnold closed his
eyes in the final sleep. Both had been married previosly
and both owned farms in Ashe County, N.C.
Mr. Arnold's first wife was Miss Cora Peery, sister of
Squire A.S. Peery, of Bluefield, Va.
On Sunday a double funeral was held in the church at
Trade, with four ministers in charge. Following the service
at church, two hearses drove away in opposite directions.
One conveying the body of Mr. Arnold in the cemetery where
his first wife is buried, and the other, the body of Mrs.
Arnold, to the burying ground of her first husband.
The local party returned monday and report one of the
most largely attended funerals they had ever witnessed.

mention of him was made on this page.

5268 June D. Proffitt, age 89, passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at the Johnson City Medical Center. June was born March 30, 1934 to the late Hubert D. and Jessie White. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Johnny Proffitt; grandchild, Shannon Proffitt; brothers, Billy Joe White and Buddy Roger White; and nephew, Billy Jack White.

June worked for 20 years as a cook at the Johnson County High School and 13 years in dietary at Mountain City Care Center. She liked to sew and enjoyed watching hummingbirds. June was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories include her husband, William Coy Proffitt; sons, Jack R. Proffitt and wife Renee, Greg Proffitt and wife Ann, and Tim Proffitt and wife Carolyn; daughter-in-law, Nancy Proffitt; Sister, Katherine Slemp; Brother, Harry White; grandchildren, Ethan Proffitt and wife Tonya, Amber Proffitt & Husband Josh, Lexi Proffitt, LeAnn Brooks and husband Greg, Nichole Proffitt, Aron Freeman, and Ashtin Rhymer; great-grandchildren, Jacob Proffitt, Quinton Brooks, Aden Brooks, Arianna Brooks, Aubriella Rose Proffitt, Kyla Walls, Nathaniel Walls, Kreed Walls, A.J. A native of Butler, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late James Maynard Gentry and Gusta Leigh Stout.
In addition to her parents, June was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Sidney Houston, and his children, Ladeau, Grady and Larry; previous husbands, Fred Riddle and James Cross; and a precious great-granddaughter, Heather Marie Row.

5271 June Irene Wagner, 90, of Butler, Tenn., went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, November 20, 2022, at Franklin Woods Community Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Paul Trivett and Edith Berry.
June was a very loving and kind person whose world revolved around her grandson. She loved animals of all kinds and always kept deer feed and bird seed on hand. In her spare time she enjoyed cooking and canning. June was a member of Little Milligan Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Wagner; sister, Ruby Lewis; and grandsons, Steven, John and Michael.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Judy Peters; son, Michael Wagner and wife Lisa; grandson, Matthew Wagner and girlfriend Courtnie; special friends, Clara Simerly and Martha Courtner; two step-grandchildren, Brianna and Destiny Jones; great-grandchild, Tori Bown; Tyler Blevins (who was like a grandson to her); and several nieces and nephews.

extended illness.
Mrs. Davidson was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Blaine and Susan Bowman Heaton. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Davidson, December 8, 1980, a son, Marvin Davidson, April 6, 2001, and by six brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Davidson was a retired nurses assistant at the Carter County Memorial Hospital and a member of Fellowship Community Church, Watauga.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda F. and John Foster and Joan E. and Larry Dean Kiser, all of Elizabethton,
and Barbara and Wayne Dugger, Powell; a son and daughter-in-law, Marion L. and Virginia Davidson, Watauga; 13 grandchildren; 11
great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Lou and Cecil Davidson,
Elizabethton; and a brother and sister-in-law, J.B. and Ann Heaton, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

She was born April 27, 1935 in Ashe County, NC to the late John Osborne and Loretta (Rettie) Roten Osborne. In addition to her parents June was preceded in death by her daughter, Carolyn Ann Potter Baughman on April 20, 2016 along with two sisters and three brothers.

Selmer and June retired back to Mountain City in 1983 and for those who knew them best can say when you saw one of them, the other was close by.

June is survived by her husband of 65 years, Selmer Potter, one sister, Jean Gentry, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends and neighbors.

5274 June Sluder, age 84, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at the Mountain City Care Center. June was born on June 1, 1937 to the late Ambrose and Bertha Garland. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Leslie Sluder; grandson, Shawn; and brothers, Bobby Garland and Jimmy Garland.

AJune was a hard worker who never complained. She had a heart of gold and took wonderful care of her family. June raised huge gardens and enjoyed canning the fruits of her labor. She loved quilting and made many hand sewn quilts over the years. She was a member of Shady Valley Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughters, Dianne Donahue, Cindy Bublinec, and Theresa Taylor; sons, Rick Sluder and David Sluder; sister, Beverly McKinney; brothers, Vernis Garland and Lonnie Garland; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; dear friend, Lee Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews.

5275 June Wilson Edwards Barham, 94, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 20, 2017 at Governors Bend Assisted Living in Erwin, Tennessee.

Mrs. Barham was born in Bee Log, North Carolina, on June 20, 1923, a daughter of the late William Isaac Wilson and Linnie McCurry Wilson.

June was beloved by everyone she met and was a kind and caring person, especially those she met at Governors Bend. She loved gardening, her flowers and watching college basketball. She was the loving wife of Charlie Edwards until his death in 1959, and Leon Dalton Barham who passed away in 2012. Her daughter, Mary Frances Edwards Jones and son-in-law, John Jones, preceded her in death in 2014. Her brothers, Austin, William, Alvin, Brook and Ward, along with sister, Cara (Cary) Louise Wilson Hyatt also preceded her in death.

June is survived by sister, Joyce Ramsey, and husband, Brian, of FL, and brother, Bill, and wife, Dana, of NC. Also surviving are grandchildren, Steven Jones and wife, Julia, of Gray, TN and granddaughter, Teresa Kay Jones Treadway and husband, Tony, of Johnson City, TN as well as her great grandson, Wesley Holt Higgins, of College Station, TX, and Great-Granddogs, Gracie, Skittles, Biscuit, Torie and Sophie.

While living in Newport News, June was a faithful member of Orchid Avenue Baptist Church. Upon her move to Erwin, she attended Fishery Community Church where she was a member of the Ladies Bible Study Group.

The family wishes to thank her special friend, Glenna Crain, along with friends and employees of Governors Bend who provided a loving and caring environment for June during her years as a resident.

Mrs. Winters was a member of Evergreen Baptist Church, Roan Mountain, and was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Winters; one sister, Edell McClain; brothers, Bruce Palmer and Jim Palmer, and Gus Palmer; half- brothers, Ona Lee Johnson, Lawrence Palmer, and Gus Palmer.

He was a retired Baptist minister having pastored for almost 60 years at 27 various churches in eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina, including Young Memorial Baptist, Roberta Baptist, Central Baptist, Eastwood Baptist and Odell Baptist churches here in the Cabarrus County region. He was preceded in death by his first wife Ruby (Sally) Trivette, who died in 1996. 5279 Karl William Cornett, age 94, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, August 17, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on April 25, 1924 to the late George B. and Effie Taylor Cornett in Mountain City, TN. In addition to his parents, Karl was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Cornett in 1978, son-in-law, Vance Gentry in 2013 and nephew, Bobby Wilson. He married his best friend, Edith Crowder on January 4, 1947. They were married for 71 years.

Karl attended Johnson County High School but was drafted in the United States Army during World War II in 1944, achieving rank of Sergeant. He was stationed in the Pacific during World War II in Okinawa. Upon returning home in 1946, Karl finished school and obtained his GED.He was of non-denominational faith.

Most people in Mountain City and surrounding areas know Karl from Cornett Furniture Store, which was started by Karl and his parents in 1949. His parents helped operate the business until their death. After their passing, Karl operated the store with his wife Edith for a total of 69 years. He was an avid golfer, having shot his age numerous times. He was also a gifted fisherman.

Kitty was a long-time resident of Albuquerque and Belen. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Abbagail Nave Buckles.
Mrs. Williams was a 1948 graduate of Unaka High School.
She and her husband Jones Williams were married on April 7, 1950 and were married for a total of 54 years.
She was a member of the Caldwell Springs Baptist Church, the WMU of Caldwell Springs Baptist and had taught Sunday school in her church for more than 40 years.
She was a floral designer and was retired as the former co-owner and operator of City Floral Shop.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Ella and Vera Buckles; four brothers, Brown, Thomas, Eston and Harry Buckles.
She is survived by her husband, Jones Williams of the VA Nursing Home, Johnson City; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael K and Tonie Berry Williams, of Elizabethton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Garry Holly and Julie and Bill Tetrick, all of Elizabethton, a very special niece, Gail Buckles of Elizabethton; one brother, J.N. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late William and Litha Mae McCloud Bradley.
Kate was a 1952 graduate of Elizabethton High School. She was a retired employee of Empire Furniture, Johnson City. Kate was a member and she loved her church, Southside Christian Church. She loved to read and send cards.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde H. Bowers; two brothers, William and Robert Bradley; and three sisters, Dorothy Pierce, Betty Dolan and Mary Dykes.
Survivors include her sister, Shirley M. Bradley; her brother, John "Bud" Bradley and wife Mae; several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, C.J. Campbell, and a special niece, Amy Campbell.

She was a homemaker who loved gardening. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers; Walt Courtner, Loyd Courtner, and Howard Courtner.

Survivors include: three sons: Marvin Courtner, of the Home, I.G. Kate was a life long resident of Sullivan County and was born March 5, 1922 to the late G. A. and Stella Woods ODell. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Bluff City and a retired employee of ITT North. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Nina Rhinehardt and her brother Clyde ODell and sister-in-law, Alma ODell.
Kate is survived by her son Ronnie Luster and wife, Angie, of Bluff City and grandchildren, Nikki and Josh Luster; her brother, Earl ODell and wife Dorothy and her brother-in-law, J. L. Rhinehardt all of Bluff City. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who were all dear to her.

Kate was born on August 7, 1927 in Butler, TN to the late William Arthur Wagner and Eula Gregg Wagner. In addition to her parents, Kate was preceded in death by her husband, Linell Potter; son, Buck Potter; two brothers, Vaught Wagner, Haggard Wagner; nephew, Gary Wagner; nieces, Kathy Wagner and Tresie Wagner.
She was employed with Burlington Industries until her retirement. Kate helped in holding Johnson County Elections in the Dry Run community for many years. For those who knew her best, knew that she was a true republican. She enjoyed animals especially her cats. Kate was a lifelong member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughter, Ann Potter; two nephews, Mel Wagner and B.K. Wagner; great nephews, Jody Wagner and Trafton Wagner; several special lifelong friends and extended family.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday October 5, 2021 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Mountain City Funeral Home and from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Wednesday October 6, 2021 from Sugar Grove Baptist Church with funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastors, Don Winters and Ray Greene to officiate. 5287 Katharyn Chambers Noble, age 92, of 216 University Parkway 3W, Johnson City, passed away Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at her residence.

A native of Carter County, TN, she was a daughter of the late D.M. Chambers Sr. and Martha Evelyn Ellis Chambers. Mrs. Noble was member of East Unaka Christian Church.

She is preceded in death by her husband, A.P Noble, in 1975; four sisters, Vorita Chambers Isaacs, Myrtle Chambers Grindstaff, Florence "Jack" Chambers Smith, Jean Chambers Williams; one brother, D.M. Chambers Jr.

Survivors include a step-daughter, Carol Braum and husband, Dick, Miami, FL; three step grandchildren; six nieces, Martha Nell Smith Estes, Joan Smith McQueen, Suzanne Williams Moore, Lisa Williams Pendleton and Mary Duke Chambers McCartt; one nephew, D.M. Chambers III; sister-in-law, Teenie Duke Chambers. Several very special great nieces and nephews.

The graveside service for Mrs. Noble will be conducted at 12:00 P.M. Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Wayne Emery, Minister, officiating.

5288 Katherine Emogene Hilton, 82, of Elizabethton, entered her eternal rest to join her husband Tom in heaven on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home.
Gene was born and raised in Elizabethton, Tenn., on July 19, 1936, the daughter of Bonnie Kate Miller and Fredrick Payne Ritchie. She was known as mom, Nanny Gene and "Gerbie" (her nickname) from hubby Tom.
Prior to becoming an LPN in her early forties, Gene was a homemaker and an Avon Sales Lady when they still went door to door. She was a member of the PTA at Range Elementary and participated in organizing a union at Denise Lingerie, one of her first jobs outside of the home.
Gene was always a caregiver, having her parents in her home for many years. She assisted in the care and upbringing of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. For over 60 years her house was the gathering place for family and friends. The door was always open and there was always laughter to be had, usually supplied by her own Lucille Ball personality; the script was Gene just being who she was.
She was an avid decorator. She loved pretty things in her home and her wardrobe. She was a stylish dresser and always wore costume jewelry.
Gene was a lifelong member of Slagle's United Methodist Church where she had been a choir director, sang in the choir and was a member of the United Methodist Women.
She will be greatly missed by all who loved her so much, but we find comfort in knowing she will be with Tom in heaven. In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by husband Tom Hilton, and brothers, Sam Ritchie, Fred Ritchie and George Ritchie.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-laws, Lynda Hilton, Elizabethton, Kathy Fair, Elizabethton, Hopie Hilton, Elizabethton, and boyfriend Bob Allen, Johnson City, Vanessa and Michael Wood, Churchill, Tenn., Tammy and Gary Turner, Pikeville, Tenn., and her companion dog, Nuggett; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; sister, Hettie Beasley and husband Don; sister-in-law, Jo Ritchie; close friend Betty Ralph and neighbor and friend Georgie Jaynes; and special cousin Patsy Trivette and husband Ronnie. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
The daughters wish to thank Ivy Hall for their tender care of our mother and Amedisys Hospice during her passing.
The sisters: Lynda, Kathy, Hopie and Vanessa give thanks to our sister Tammy Turner and our brother-in-law Gary who cared for our mother in Pikeville, Tenn., for over two years. Logging thousands of miles to bring her home for visits and making their home hers, a thank you also to all of her Pikeville family, friends and her caregivers.
Funeral services will be conducted at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Lu Crandell officiating. A eulogy will be given by her daughter, Vanessa Wood. Interment will follow in the Old Slagle Cemetery following the funeral service. Active pallbearers will be Jeremiah Quintero, Joey Mottern, Cody Fair, Christopher Turner, Brian Turner, Patrick Turner, Bradley Hatcher and Robert Pickens. 5289 Katherine Hassenrick, age 70, of Stout's Branch Road, passed away on Saturday, March 25, 2023. She was born on July 28, 1952 to the late Bryam Hackney and Anna Mae Morefield. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her sister, Jane Woodward, Brother-in-law, Randy Pardue, niece, Amanda Woodward and best friend, Brenda Fletcher.

Katherine was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was a graduate of Johnson County High School, enjoyed gardening and cooking. She was also known as I.E to her nephew, Peyton.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Don Hassenrick of the home; sister, Linda Pardue of Mountain City; nieces and nephew, Evelyn Huddleston, Cheri Potter, April Pardue and Peyton Woodward; special friends, Margaret Cress, Tiffany Espinoza, Hallie Williams and a host of other close friends.

Funeral service for Katherine will be Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at 11 am in the Charles B. Hux Chapel at Hux & Lipford Funeral Home with Mike Pennley officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 - 11 am prior to the funeral. A graveside service will follow at Dyson Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Jeffery Lipford, Bradley Lipford, Stephen Lipford, James Reece, Harley Reece, Mike Wilson, Dawson Potter and Jonathan Lunceford.

5290 Katherine June Lilly, 95, a devoted wife, loving mother, and pianist/organist, was called home to the Lord on January 4, 2022. She peacefully passed at home, to now join her beloved husband Dennis of 48 years, who went on ahead of her in 2001.
Katy was born March 25, 1926, in Fairmont, WV, as a daughter of George and Iva Ginkel Donham. Her great grandfather was George Adams, former street commissioner of Fairmont, after which the main thoroughfare downtown, Adams Street, was named.
She graduated high school from Saint Peters Catholic School, then on to West Virginia University in Morgantown to complete her Bachelor of Arts and Master’s degrees in Music, with a concentration in piano and organ. As a student at WVU, Katy met Dennis, who was also in the Music Master’s program in voice, and she served as his accompanist. They were married in November 1952 at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. After having lived in Johnson City, they moved to Amherst, MA, and College Park, MO, finally relocating back to Johnson City in 1967. Katy taught private piano lessons from home and served as an organist for a number of local area churches, which include First United Methodist Church in Johnson City, and United Methodist Church in Elizabethton. She served as organist and later as music director at Erwin Presbyterian Church, retiring after having served 33 years.
In addition to her parents Katy was preceded in death by two daughters, Marjorie Harvey and Susanne Lilly James, brother, John Donham, and daughter in law, Kelly MacFarlane Lilly.
Survivors include her three sons, David and wife Sandra (Rast) Lilly of Johnson City, Mike Lilly of Cartersville, GA, Jason and wife Jani (Ahmad) Lilly of McDonough, GA; grandchildren, Ryan and his wife, Katherine Derise and husband Matthew of Memphis; Zach Lilly of Pinehurst, NC, Madison Scott and husband Alex of Sanford, NC, Nick Lilly of Atlanta, GA, Devin Lilly of Dallas, TX, Garrett Lilly of Statesboro, GA, Eric Harvey of Jonesborough; great grandchildren, twins George and Zoey Derise; son-in-law, Rigby Harvey of Gray; sister, Eleanor Timms and husband Delmar, of Wheeling, WV; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, January 14, 2022, from 6:00-8:00 P.M. at Appalachian Funeral Home.
The private family graveside committal will be conducted Saturday, January 15, 2022 at 10:30 A.M. in Washington County Memory Gardens with Pastor Stan Webster, officiating. Katy will be laid to rest beside her husband Dennis. Pallbearers will be chosen from family.

5291 Katherine Setzer was born in 1778 in Lincoln County, NC, the daughter of John Setzer and Catherine Barringer. Katherine's grandfather, Jacob Setzer, immigrated from Germany to the US.

She married George Heinrich "Henry" Dellinger in 1805 in Lincoln County, NC. He was the son of Johann (John) Philipp Dellinger who immigrated to the US from Germany. She gave birth to at least 13 children, no small feat in those days. Most of her children settled nearby in Catawba County. No doubt she was able to enjoy many grandkids!

Katherine died in 1855 in Linville Falls, Watauga County, now Avery. She is buried at Pisgah United Methodist Church, Avery County, NC.

5292 Katheryn Victoria Pritchard, 81, of Avery County, went Home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 13, 2022 at The Greens in Spruce Pine.

A native of Avery County, she was the daughter of the late Ike and Melba Calhoun Erwin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Pritchard, Sr., who passed away July 4, 1998; son, Danny Pritchard; and brother, Buddy Erwin.

Katheryn attended Big Meadows Missionary Baptist Church for numerous years. She loved going to the beach, cooking, and especially working in her yard.

Left to cherish her memories is her son, Lee Pritchard and wife, Jackie of Old Fort, and special best friend, Jenny Hughes of Roaring Creek. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Elk Mountain Freewill Baptist Church. Rev. Ryan Bennett will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Pallbearers will be Brian Watson, Tony Jones, Glenn Aldridge, Greg Johnson and Peck Taylor.

Graveside services for Kathleen Brown, 93, of Mesa, AZ, will be at 10:00 AM, Saturday, July 9, 2011, in the Portales Cemetery with Scott P. Reeves officiating. Her family members will be honorary pallbearers.
Kathleen Elgitha Brown, born February 25, 1918, in Abilene, TX, was the firstborn child of Eula Mae and James (Jim) Wilson Owen and died June 30, 2011 in Mesa, AZ. She and her family moved to Portales, NM, when she was a young child, and she attended the Portales Schools. Mrs. Brown worked at the J. C. Penney's store in Clovis, NM, for several years. In 1946 she moved to California, where she continued to work for the company. She retired after 25 years of service. For many years she lived in Stockton, CA, but in the late 1990's she moved to Mesa, AZ.
When she was 65 years old, her high school sweetheart, Bob Brown, researched her whereabouts, and they reconnected. They were married for over 20 years before his death on February 7, 2005. They enjoyed dancing and doing many things together. Mrs. Brown was always a very well dressed and pretty lady. In recent years she had become an avid fan of the Arizona Diamondbacks. She loved country music, and Josh Turner was her idol. After attending one of his concerts, her son arranged for her to go backstage and meet Mr. Turner. This was definitely one of the highlights of her life. She also enjoyed playing Wheel of Fortune at the casino.
She is survived by one daughter, Patsy Ann Dewbre of Clovis and one son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie Alfred and Vicki Cary of Mesa, AZ; a step-son, Jerry D. Brown of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; a step-daughter, Priscilla L. Zaninovich of Bakersville, CA; 11 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren; a brother, Sharbutt Owen of Colorado Springs, CO; and three sisters, Bonnie Seal of Portales, Marie Henson of Phoenix, AZ, and Letha Erickson of Glendale, AZ, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides Mr. Brown, she was preceded in death by a son, Sidney Raymond Cary, who died earlier this year; a step-son, Rod Brown and a sister, Shirley Heisch.

5294 Kathleen Burleson, 74, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 5, 2021, at her residence. Kathleen was born in Roan Mountain to the late Walter and Vallie Johnson Brown. In addition to her parents, Kathleen was preceded in death by her husband, William Burleson; a daughter, Lisa Gail Brown Salley; and a nephew, Bobby Brown.
Kathleen was a wonderful cook, homemaker and mother. She was sassy and an excellent improviser — she was able to think quick and work efficiently in all situations. Kathleen was a Christian lady and taught Sunday School at Roan Mountain Church of God for several years and had also served as the church treasurer. Most of all, Kathleen loved her family and working in her flowers. She was a true perfectionist with her yard.
Those left to cherish Kathleen’s memories include a son, Ronnie L. Beam of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; her son-in-law, Randy Salley of North Carolina; her brother, Jack (Juanita) Brown of Virginia; and her special friend, Louise Hughes. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate Kathleen’s life will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, December 9, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Rev. Randy English officiating. Music will be provided by Janet Paschal. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, December 10, in the Smith Cemetery in Roan Mountain. Honorary pallbearers will be Tommy Brown and Greg Brown, Richard Brown and Israel King.

5295 Kathleen Fair Hart, 93, Elizabethton, passed away Friday December 7, 2018 at The Bridge Assisted Living, Ooltewah, Tennessee. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late John & Annie Walker Fair. She was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation. She was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Joe Hart, a daughter: JoAnna Fair, a son: Michael Hart, four sisters and four brothers.

Survivors include a son & daughter-in-law: Tony & Jacque Hart, Ooltewah, TN and a daughter-in-law: Barbara Hart, Elizabethton. She is also survived by six grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren, one sister: Effie Joines, Elizabethton and several nieces & nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday, in the funeral home. Funeral Service will be conducted at 4 p.m Tuesday, December 11, 2018 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with her son Brigadier General (Retired) Tony Hart and Rev. Bill Davis officiating. 5296 Kathleen Hensley Cooper, age 86, Spivey Community, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, October 19, 2021 at her home. She was a native and lifelong resident of Unicoi County. Kathleen is a daughter of the late Joe Roscoe and Lucy Tolley Hensley.
Kathleen was a faithful member of Mountain Dale Freewill Baptist Church. She loved going to church, singing in the choir and in her younger years she sang with the Mountain Dale Quartet. She loved her church family and was constantly praying for everyone she knew. She retired from Industrial Garment where she was employed as a seamstress for twenty years.
Kathleen enjoyed working around her home, raising a garden, and cooking, she always made sure her family was fed, and no one left hungry. She also enjoyed raising several different kinds of flowers, especially Iris’s, with her sisters, Glasie and Irene.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-three years, Wayne Cooper on April 6, 2020; one brother, Kyle Hensley; two sisters: Irene Hensley Tipton and Zelta Hensley Bagby and husband Pete; nephews: Kelly Peterson and Ricky Hensley; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; C.J. Cooper, Ted Cooper, Pansy Delffs, and Janie Burgess.
Kathleen leaves behind to cherish her memory, her son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Kelly Cooper; special granddaughter, JoAnna; one sister, Glasie and R.L. Peterson; two brothers: Arnold and Marsha Hensley, George and Sharrol Hensley; brother-in-law, Stanley Tipton; sisters-in-law, Carolyn Hensley, Verlon Burgess, Glenda Moore and husband Steve, Kay Cooper, and Connie Cooper; special extended family: Debbie Bradford, Susan Hensley, Robin Edwards; very special great nieces, Heidi and Hannah Hensley who all have been so willing and graciously in helping take care of Kathleen. 5297 Kathleen Hoyle, age 85, 107 Cut-Off, Greeneville, TN, formerly of Flag Pond, passed away at the home of her daughter in Woodstock, Georgia.

Mrs. Hoyle was born December 28, 1925 in Unicoi County. She was a daughter of the late Blaine Arthur and Zora Tilson Guinn. Mrs. Hoyle retired in 1984 as an operator for Morrill Motors.
She was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Hoyle was a loving and devoted wife, mom, ma-maw, and great grandmother.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hartsell Hoyle in 2003; three sisters: Dean Treadway, Rita Hoyle, and Dot Corn; one brother, Dwight Guinn, who was killed during World War II.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Clara Pierce Lewis. She was also preceded in death by her husband William Robert Glover, a Son Eric Sage Glover, a sister Yvonne Fowler, and two brothers Orville Lewis and Sturgill Lewis. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bob & Molly Glover. Six Grandchildren, Leslie Luttrell(Robert), Rob Glover(Carrie), Brian Glover(Jessica), Weston Glover, Seth Glover and Ethan Glover. Two great-grandchildren, Emma, Nora and Jackson Glover. Several nieces and nephews. A private service for the family was previously held.

5299 Kathleen Moody Parrish, age 79, of Marion, passed away Monday, February 24, 2014 at The McDowell Hospital. Mrs. Parrish was born in Johnson City, TN on July 28, 1934 and was a daughter of the late Robert Moody and Marjorie Lewis Garvan. Kathleen enjoyed sewing, knitting and all kinds of crafts. She loved to feed people through her excellent baking. She loved her family very much and was known to be a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Surviving Kathleen is her husband of 29 years, Ernie Parrish; two sons, Ron Turner of Marion and Rick Turner and wife Jennifer of Morganton; a daughter Erin Turner of Simi Valley, CA; three brothers, Lee Moody of Morganton, Larry Moody of Texas and Joe Moody of Mobile, Alabama; fifteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Thursday, February 27, 2014 at 3:00 pm at McDowell Memorial Park with Rev. Jim Brewer officiating.

5300 Kathleen Potter Hatley Hodges, 87, passed away on Friday, May 12, 2023, at her residence.

She was born to the late David Carter Potter and Hattie McElyea Potter in the old town of Butler, TN. At the age of 12, their family home was taken when the Watauga Lake was built. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Hodges.

She was known as a sweet, generous, kind, loving woman who loved her family. She worked very hard in her life, raising eight children during hard times. She, however, considered herself a blessed person. She loved to bake, decorate and clean her home. Kathleen also had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing gospel songs and going to church. Most of all, she loved her Lord.

Kathleen worked at the Glove Plant in Mountain City, the IRC/TRW in Boone, NC, and the Chetola Resort, Blowing Rock, NC.

Kathleen was preceded in death by seven sisters; Ethel, Eula, Mildred, Doris, Ruth, Betty and Dorothy; three brothers, Bud, Marion, and James. She was first married to Clifford Dan Hatley "Buckeye Hatley." They had eight children: Betty, Gary, Michael (Wuzzy), Susie, Janice, Kathy Jo, Randy and Denny. She later married Roy Hodges and had one stepson Kelly Hodges from Foscoe, NC. She had 11 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, and great great great grandchildren.

A Service to Celebrate the life of Kathleen will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 18, 2023, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, TN with Rev. Ray Greene and Pastor Eric Cornett officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. prior to the service.

A graveside service and interment will follow at the Happy Valley Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
