5001 JOHNSON CITY - The Rev. Joseph Vance Eastridge passed away on Oct. 13, 2022, in Johnson City, TN. He was greeted in Heaven with a hug from his first wife, Marian, a new joke from his brother, Roby and the lovely voice of his sister, Gladys.

Vance was born Jan. 13, 1927, in his Grandmother’s home in Ashe Co., NC to the late Roby Julius & Lillian Osborne Eastridge. He grew up in Teas & Marion, VA, before moving to Mountain City, TN and graduating from Johnson County High School. He received his degree in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Answering the call to the ministry, he earned his Master of Ministry Degree from Emory’s Candler School of Theology.

Vance entered the ministry as associate pastor at Church Street Methodist in Knoxville where he fell in love and married his wife, Marian Wilson. As a student at Candler, he served as pastor in Rome, GA and founded St. Mary’s of the Hills Methodist Church in Columbus, GA. Vance was ordained a minister in the Methodist Church (later the United Methodist Church) in 1960. He served as a Senior Pastor for 40 years at churches in St. Paul (VA), Knoxville, Friendsville, Dayton, Ooltewah, Madisonville, Gatlinburg, Karns, Rockwood, Chattanooga, & Johnson City (TN). After the death of his wife Marian, he fell in love again and married Carlene Bradley at First UMC in Johnson City. He went on to serve churches in Oak Ridge, Newport and Richlands (VA). Retiring in 1994, he & his family attended Munsey United Methodist where he taught the Virgil Anderson Sunday School Class for 16 yrs.

During his ministry, Vance served on a number of boards and committees of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church including the Board of Trustees of the Conference Colleges, Conference Board of Trustees and the Holston Conference Camping Ministries.

In addition to his parents, Vance was preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia Bennington, Izella Osborne, Ozella Vines, Stella Maude Counts, and Gladys Hill Yarbrough; his brothers, Ernest, Homer and Roby Harold Eastridge; his first wife, Marian Wilson Eastridge and daughter-in-law, Nancy Collins Eastridge.

Vance was a wonderful husband, daddy, granddaddy, and great-granddaddy. He loved hiking in the mountains, landscape gardening and being with his family. He was known for his excellence in writing, preaching and teaching, and he loved sharing God’s word as a minister in the United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Carlene Bradley Eastridge; his sons, Wesley Eastridge (Joy), Michael Eastridge (Angie) and Bradley Eastridge; his daughter, Karen E. Short (Chuck); his grandchildren, Sam Eastridge, Caitlin Maxey, Hannah O’Hamill, Chrissy Idlette, Amanda Lawrenson, Tim Eastridge, Ben Phillips, Blake Browning, and Emorie Browning; he is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren.

5002 JOHNSON CITY - Thelma Bess Lewis Holt, age 94, of Johnson City, TN passed away Sunday, December 1, 2019 in the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Claude Carlton Lewis and Frances Mae Sparks Lewis Jarrett. She was a member of Central Community Christian Church. Thelma was a homemaker who enjoyed sewing and quilting, cooking, puzzles and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Brooks Holt, a brother, William "Dusty" Lewis and a half-brother, Garnett "Bud" John Jarrett. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Jim Holt and wife Barbara, Lewis Holt, Michelle Gourley, Don Holt and Mark Holt and wife Anita; grandchildren, Seth Holt and wife Sonya, Steve Gourley and wife Kimberly, Carrie Holt, Captain Alayna Holt USAF and Second Lt. Robert Holt USAF and wife Kelsey; a great-grandchild, Madison Gourley; siblings, Carl Lewis and wife Martha Lou, Edna Crumley and husband Tom and Sarah Edwards and husband Garry. Beloved step-brothers, sisters and in-laws and many nieces and nephews as well as special friends, Dr. David Franzus, Dr. Dianne Draper and Kathryn Smith also survive.

A service to honor the life of Thelma Bess Lewis Holt will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 7, 2019 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Pastor Garry Edwards officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 – 2:00 P.M. on Saturday prior to the funeral service. Private graveside service will be held at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

5003 JOHNSON CITY - Thelma Lue Sneyd, age 84 of Johnson City, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at her home. She was a daughter of the late Dave and Ida Morton Campbell, born to them on September 12, 1937 in Washington County. She united in marriage to Carl Sneyd and to this union, two loving sons were born. She was a homemaker and attended the Rich Acres Freewill Baptist Church.

Along with her parents, Thelma is preceded in death by her husband Carl Sneyd.

Thelma is survived by her loving sons, Kyle (Barb) Sneyd and David (Amy) Sneyd; her grandchildren, Josh Sneyd, Heath (Christina) Sneyd, Kelby Sneyd and fiancé Brittney Birchfield; honorary grandchildren, Justin Alley, Jordon and Misty Shepard; her great-grandchildren, Aislynn Sciubba, Mikaela Sciubba and J.T. Hayes. She is also survived by many dear friends left behind to cherish her memory.

Funeral services for Thelma Lue Sneyd will be conducted on Saturday, May 14, 2022 at 7:00 P.M. in the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services with Kenneth Grindstaff and Brett Jones officiating.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening after 5:00 P.M. until the hour of service at 7:00 P.M.

A committal service will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. in the Roselawn Memorial Park with Heath Sneyd, Josh Sneyd, Kelby Sneyd, Justin Alley, Jordon Shepard, Bobby Sneyd and William David Sneyd serving pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Ford and Bill Garland.

5004 JOHNSON CITY - Thomas "Tommy" W. Altman, age 77, of Johnson City, went to be with the Lord following a lenthgy illness.

Mr. Altman born on February 15, 1940 in Greene County to the late T.D. and Earlene Altman. He was a member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. Altman was formerly employed at Interstate Foundry, Johnson City Foundry, and Kingsport Foundry. Tommy was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a maintenance man and a great mechanic.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Dugger; brother, Jerry Atman; sister, Jean Deloach.

Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Becky Gillette Altman, Johnson City; a daughter, Teri Vines and husband Tim, Johnson City; two grandchildren, Andrew Dugger and Audrey King, both of Johnson City. Several great grandchildren also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Altman will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, December 12, 2017 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Yelton officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 13 at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Rocky Gillette, Dr. Jeff Farrow and Dr. Frank Forbush.

5005 JOHNSON CITY - Thomas Earl Earp, Sr., 73 years young, of Johnson City, TN. has made his journey to be with his Lord and Savior.

He left this world surrounded by family on Saturday, July 7, 2018 after a lengthy illness. Thomas was a faithful and lifetime member of the Johnson City Church of God, and loved his "Collins brothers and sisters." He retired from the State of Maryland as a Stationary Engineer, and moved back home to Tennessee after his retirement.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sue Earp and a son, Thomas Earl Earp Jr. He was the son of the late Howard William Earp and Clara Ruth Arnold Earp, and grandson of the late George Calloway Earp and Nealie Alice Trivette and James Claiborne Arnold and Mabel Patience Dykes.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Cathryn Walker Earp; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Runion and husband, Michael of Jonesborough; a son, James Wyatt Earp Sr. and wife, Julie of Essex, MD; seven beloved grandchildren, Stephanie, Joshua, Emily and Kaitlyn Runion of TN and Alicia, James Wyatt Jr. and Juliana Earp of MD; as well as one very special great-grandson, Malachi Chase Ellis. Thomas is also survived by his loyal and dedicated brother, Leslie and wife, Cheryl Earp and sister, Bonnie Huffman of Johnson City; also many nieces, nephews and cousins; He also leaves behind his beloved pet dogs Coco and Princess and cat Sweetie Pie to be cared for by Mary Earp.

Funeral services for Thomas will be conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 11, 2018 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Rev. C. Bryant Collins officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until the service hour. Interment will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be James W. Earp Sr., James W. Earp Jr., Mike Runion, Josh Runion, Shawn Ladd and John Mark Overman. In lieu of flowers the family asks for those able to do so, any donations to the family to help with medical and funeral expenses would be greatly appreciated.

The family relays special thanks to the staff, especially the compassionate CNA's and nurse, Sam at the Waters Facility in Johnson City for their care during the last several months he was with us, as well as to the physicians and staff he has seen over the years.

5006 JOHNSON CITY - Thomas Martin Jones, 83, Johnson City passed away Tuesday, December 7, 2021 at the residence of his grandson. He was a native of Butler but had lived in Johnson City most of his life. Mr. Jones was a son of the late Joseph Jones and Alice Irick Jones. He was a general building contractor and had built many houses in Washington County. Mr. Jones attended Faith Freewill Baptist Church. He loved fishing, gardening, flowers, magic tricks and most of all traveling with his wife. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Thomas Casey; a granddaughter, Lashay Casey; five siblings, Dale Jones, Helen Johnson, Hazel Walker, Betty Fry and Frankie Clark.
Survivors include his loving wife, Alma Jean Graybeal Jones; a daughter, Anna Marie Jones of Ashland, Ohio; two grandsons, William Adam Casey and his wife, Kimberly of Jonesborough and Dean Fairchild of Ohio; great-grandchildren, Noah Carver, Lincoln Casey and Adalynn Casey; two brothers, Earl Jones of Elizabethton and James Thomas of North Carolina; a brother-in-law, Bud Clark; several nieces and nephews including Julia McQueen and husband, Ronnie and daughter, Chelsea and Earl “JR” Jones.

5007 JOHNSON CITY - Vearl E. “Gil” Moody, age 81, of Johnson City, entered into heaven on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at the Ballad Health Hospice House, Bristol, following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Moody was born and raised in Johnson City. He was a graduate of Southeastern Christian College in Winchester, KY, and was a veteran, serving in the US army.

Following a successful managing career with JC Penney, Mr. Moody returned to Johnson City in 1976 to fulfill a personal goal of opening Moody Books.

Mr. Moody was an ordained minister. For over 50 years, he was minister of music serving several churches. He was on the staff of Fishery Community Church in Erwin for 17 years at the time of his death.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, Warren and Ranah Moody; his wife, Linda D. Moody; two brothers, Bill Caraway and Warren “Gene” Moody, and a sister, Doris Caraway.

Mr. Moody is survived by: two daughters, Vickie Allison and husband Derrick, of Illinois, and Linda Moody Cass of New York; two sons, Vearl E. Moody, Jr. and wife Beverly, of Piney Flats, and Timothy Moody of New York; one brother, Jerry Moody of Ringold, GA; one sister, Sharon M. Wrinn of Johnson City; four grandchildren, Molly and Graham Allison and Nick and Raina Moody; and several nieces and nephews.

The family of Gil Moody will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Tuesday, September 7, 2021, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Art Gibson officiating. Graveside services will be conducted 10:00 AM Wednesday at Monte Vista Memorial Park.

5008 JOHNSON CITY - Vickie Lynn Wikle, 73, of Johnson City died Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at Fort Sanders Hospital in Knoxville. She was a native of Johnson City, daughter of the late Ralph Eugene and Hazel Marie Shell Smith.

Vickie was a registered nurse and spent most of her career at Baptist Hospital in Knoxville, TN. She graduated from the Diploma Program at Baptist and later received a BS degree from Tusculum University. Vickie was known for her cooking and baking, she generously shared with coworkers, friends and family. Vickie was also an avid sports fan who strongly supported the Tennessee Vols.

After caring for her husband for several years, Vickie returned to Johnson City to care for her sister. Vickie shared her love of canning with her aunt, Betty Grindstaff. The two spent many days canning together and sharing with family and friends. Vickie attended Southside Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Wikle, a sister, Patty Howell and sister-in-law, Phyllis Smith.

Survivors include her brothers, Joe Smith and Dana Smith (Robin); brother-in-law Chris Howell; her aunt Betty Grindstaff; best friend June Hubbs; many nieces, nephews, cousins and many other special friends and coworkers.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 31, 2022, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm in the Dogwood Chapel at Morris-Baker. A memorial service will follow at 2:00 pm under the direction of Chaplain Dan Hix and Pastor Randy Lester. Vickie and her husband Joe will be interred at Mt. Home National Cemetery together at a later date.

5009 JOHNSON CITY - Virginia Ann Treadway, 84, Johnson City, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Elizabethton, she was a daughter of the late N.E. and Mary Whitesell Hodges. Virginia attended Downtown Christian Church. She taught for many years at Dunbar, Town Acres and Liberty Bell. Virginia loved riding her fourwheeler on the farm, volunteering for Meals on Wheels and participating in Silver Sneaker. She was a loving mother who adored her two children, Tam and Todd, and she also loved her dogs, Issy and Toby. In addition to her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Ben F. Treadway, Jr.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Tam Treadway and her partner Melea Hunter and son, Todd Treadway; her sister, Burdeane Fair; a niece and nephew, Marsha Lott and Mark Fair; and her best friend of over 70 years, Gerry Baudinot.

The family will greet friends to share memories from 12:30PM until 1:30PM on Friday, July 28, 2017 at Tetrick Funeral & Cremation Services, Johnson City. A Celebration of Life Service in honor of Virginia will begin at 1:30PM with Dr. W. Edward Fine officiating. A Graveside Service will be held immediately following at Roselawn Memory Gardens.

5010 JOHNSON CITY - Wanda L. Tipton, 79, of Johnson City, passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

She was a native of Washington County and daughter of the late Luther Garland and Agnes Keller Jones. In addition to her parents, Wanda was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Glen Tipton, two brothers, Buck and Del Garland.

Wanda loved to cook and feed everyone she met. She had a big heart and was always willing to help. She retired from Leon-Fernbach after twenty years of service as the head inspector.

Those left to cherish Wanda's memory include her children: Angela Hawkins (Rick), Sonja Bailey (Dan), Glen Tipton, Jr. (Missy), and Mark Tipton; grandchildren: Ashley Duckworth (Tyler), Whitney Montgomery (Matt), Mandi Tipton Collier (Colby), Morgan Tipton, Kailand Borkowski (Dakota), and Brooke Bailey; great-grandchildren: Joshua Briggs, Malia Lynn McFarland, Avery Rose Montgomery, Asher Ethan Collier, Easton River Duckworth, Major James Tipton, Sutton Claire Collier, Luna Quinn Borkowski, and Bryson Chase Montgomery; her brothers: David Garland, and Kenneth Garland; several nieces and nephews.

5011 JOHNSON CITY - Wanda Mae Guinn Pate, 94, of Johnson City, passed way on Tuesday, August 2, 2022, at her residence. She was surrounded by caregivers, friends, and close nephew, Donnie Pate, who will all miss her dearly.

She was a lifelong resident of Carter County, daughter of the late Jack and Blanche Arnett Guinn.

Wanda loved life. She enjoyed traveling with her late husband, Bill, making a lifetime of memories across the world. Back home at home she spent time crafting, collecting, and attending service at Grace Gospel Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by: husband, Bill J. Pate; brothers, George Guinn, Tommy Guinn, and Otis Guinn; sisters, Dorothy “Dottie” Forbes of Elizabethton, Myrtle Elliot, Sarah Whitehead, and Lee McKinney.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family would like to thank the caregivers from Visiting Angels for the exceptional care they gave Wanda in their time with her, going above and beyond every day. Special thanks are also extended to Michelle and the rest of the hospice team at Amedysis for their compassion and care.

The family of Wanda Pate will receive friends from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. 5012 JOHNSON CITY - Wanda Miller Glover, 75, of Johnson City, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Washington County, TN she is the daughter of the late James Clyde and Goldie Louise Phillips Miller. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by a sister, Velma L. Miller.

Wanda was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Jonesborough. She retired as a human resources specialist with the James H. Quillen V.A. Medical Center, Mountain Home, TN. Wanda enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren as well as shopping and traveling, especially to the beach.

Those left to cherish her memory include: sons, Tim Glover (Debbie) and Mark Glover (Edna); siblings, Bill F. Miller (Della), Polly Walker (Jerry), and Gerry Glover (Ken); grandchildren, Ashley Glover, Zion Glover, Mimi Buddenborg, Jacob Williams, Susan Humphrey, and Natalie Humphrey; five great-grandchildren; two special nieces, Robin Walker and Lee Graybeal; and several nieces and nephews.

5013 JOHNSON CITY - Warren G. Hardin, Jr., age 53, of Johnson City, entered his heavenly home on Wednesday, December 19, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Warren was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late Warren G. Hardin, Sr. and Betty Jo Hodge Hardin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Andy Byrd Hardin and Ora Hardin; his maternal grandparents, Ivan C. Hodge and Rohda Mae "Granny" Hodge; his aunts, Charlotte Hodge Morris and Johnnie Suzie Prosser; and his uncle, Joel Hodge.

Warren was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church in the Stoney Creek Community of Elizabethton. Warren was a very special young man who was known for his beautiful smile, contagious laughter and a great sense of humor. He was a very loving and caring individual who enjoyed watching TV, DVD's and especially loved eating his favorite foods being Dairy Queen, I Hop and McDonald's.

Those left to cherish Warren's precious memories include his cousin, Jacklyn Morris (Kevin Lipford), of Elizabethton; a sister, Carole Younce (Gene) of Elizabethton; a brother, Barry "Corky" Brownlee, of Knoxville; two uncles, Ronnie Hodge, of Elizabethton and Jerry Hodge, of Bristol, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Warren G. Hardin, Jr. will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 22, 2018 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Steven Nauman, officiating. Music will be under the direction of James Don Trivette. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Saturday or at the residence of his cousin, Jacklyn, at other times.

The graveside service will follow in the Nave Cemetery in the Siam Community of Elizabethton. Active pallbearers will be Kevin Lipford, Gene Younce, Josh Fair and Josh Lipford. Honorary pallbearers will be all of his friends.

5014 JOHNSON CITY - Wayne Edward Poarch, age 80, of Johnson City, Tennessee, died on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
Wayne was born November 26, 1942, to the late Bert Poarch Sr. and Vena Holder Poarch in Carter County. He married the love of his life, Opal Jane Waldrop Poarch and together they raised three children.
Wayne owned and operated Fast Delivery Service for 48 years. He absolutely loved dirt track racing and he was an owner and operator in the 1970’s. In his free time, Wayne loved to camp and fish. Every weekend for many years he and Opal would get away to their camper on Cherokee Lake. He had an incredible sense of humor, and he will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, Wayne was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Opal; son, Chris Poarch; and grandson, Christopher Poarch Jr.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Deena (and Randal) Widener; son, Tim (and Michele) Poarch; grandson, Matthew Widener; and granddaughter, Amber Poarch.
There will be a graveside service at 12:00 pm, Saturday, January 22, 2022, at Monte Vista Memorial Park.

5015 JOHNSON CITY - William D. "Bill" Howell, Jr., 80, Johnson City, passed away, Friday, February 17, 2017 at NHC Health Care. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late William D. Howell, Sr. and Ruth Carter Howell.

Bill was a past Master Mason with the Watauga Lodge # 622 and a York Rite Shriner. He was a member of the Watauga Campers and Hikers Association. Bill enjoyed traveling with his friends in the Model "A" restorers club. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service where he became friends with everyone on his route. Following retirement, Bill spent most of his time at the beach in South Carolina until he had to return home due to illness.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of fifty four years, Rose Ann Nave Howell, his brother Alan Howell and his wife Mary Ann, niece, Hannah Howell, nephew, Ritchie Howell, great-niece, Mariah Ann Howell, several other loving family members and friends also survive.

The family ask that in lieu of flowers donations be sent to the charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, February 19, 2017 in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services Johnson City. 5016 JOHNSON CITY - William Ray Harrison, 89, of Johnson City passed away on Friday September 13, 2019 at Lakebridge.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Spencer and Alice Harvey Harrison. He was also preceded in death by three sisters: Gladys Scalf, Pauline Hodge, and Ann Coffey; and four brothers: Reynold Harrison, James Harrison, Kenneth Harrison, and Roy Wade Harrison. Mr. Harrison owned J.C. Barber & Beauty Supply and was also a barber. He served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Harrison was a Mason & Shriner.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years: Frances Hunter Harrison, daughter Deborah McNeill (John), daughter, Cindy Williams, daughter Brenda Townsend (Kevin) all of Johnson City and daughter Lisa Yates (David) of Elizabethton. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Keila Smithpeters (Brian); Stacy Haas (Chris); Adam Williams (Christa), all of Johnson City and Jessie Rasnick (Matt) of Elizabethton and his great grandchildren: Easton, Gibson, Paisley, Sawyer, Cayden, Blaklie, and Annie Mae. Also, left to cherish his memory is Sherry Coffey, sister and Eugene Harrison, brother and several nieces and nephews. 5017 JOHNSON CITY - William T. “Bill” Muse, 95, of Johnson City, passed away May 13, 2022, with his daughter by his side.

Bill was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee, but made Johnson City his home and place of business for over ninety years. He was the son of the late Mayland “Ducky” Muse and Valarie Muse Ferguson, step-mother Thelma “Suze” Muse and step-father Guy Ferguson, Esquire.

Bill graduated from Science Hill High School in 1945. After graduation, Bill enlisted in the United States Navy, serving as a Machinist’s Mate, Third Class on the USS Bennett destroyer during World War II, where he was awarded the Victory Medal and American Theatre Medal. He was honorably discharged at the end of WWII. Following his military service, Bill attended the University of Tennessee where he studied architecture and mechanical engineering and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Fraternity.

Bill worked in the family business, Muse Incorporated, until he became an entrepreneur. He started East Tennessee Sprinkler Company Inc. and never looked back. He ran the company over forty years alongside his wife, Erma. In addition, his two children Bill Jr. and Sherrye did whatever was needed to assist with building the company. He served as president of the Tennessee Fire Sprinkler Association for five years and worked cooperatively with numerous fire protection agencies and private businesses throughout the state of Tennessee.

Bill was a member of the Grand Lodge #486 in Johnson City, Tennessee, Order of Free and Accepted Masons and the Order of the Eastern Star, Nolichucky Grandview #194 in Johnson City, Tennessee. He served on numerous committees during his membership. Bill was also active in several other community and service organizations.

Upon retirement, Bill enjoyed playing Putt-Putt, winning over one hundred tournaments. He enjoyed watching golf tournaments and baseball, especially the Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds. He was also a member of Johnson City Senior Center’s Musical Voices, lending his beautiful voice to the group as they performed at events across the region. He also enjoyed his many extended beach trips over the years to the Gulf Coast of Florida where he could feel the gulf breeze daily and watch the sunset nightly.

In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Erma Morefield Muse, his half-brothers, Johnny and Mickey Muse.

Survivors include his son William “Bill” Muse, Jr. and his wife Mary Ann; daughter Sherrye Muse Orr; granddaughter Jennifer Orr McGuffey and her husband Jeff; great grandson Hunter McGuffey; sister-in-law Barbara Minor; half-sister Sally Muse Kohn; Betty Muse sister-in-law; loyal nephew Lance Elliott and niece Whitney Bolton; niece Beth Elliott Tarr: grandnephews Riley Bolton and Christopher Tarr; nephew Randy Oakes; nieces Kelly Muse Reed; Melonee McKinney Hurt; nephews Mike Muse, Bobby Muse, and Matt McKinney.

Bill was not only beloved by his family, but also by many friends, business associates, and colleagues throughout the state of Tennessee. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and was affectionately known by many as “Poppy.” Bill dedicated his life to others during his career by ensuring the community’s safety through fire protection, and in other aspects of his life by wearing a welcoming smile and meeting everyone he encountered with a joke.

5018 JOHNSON CITY - William Thomas "Tom" Cowan, 79, Johnson City passed away Friday, June 8, 2018 in the Johnson City Medical Center after an extended illness.

A native of Butler, he was a son of the late Wiley T. & Julia Ann Guy Cowan. He worked as an Airport Policeman and a truck driver at Summers-Taylor. Tom was a fifty year member of Johnson City Masonic Lodge # 486, Jericho Shrine where he was a former Roadrunner and the Nolachuckey-Grand View # 194, Order of Eastern Star. He was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.

Survivors include his wife Mary Ellen Godsey Cowan. Two Children: Tommy R. Cowan, Elizabethton and Kathy Waldrop & Robert Miller, Jonesborough. Five Grandchildren: Valerie Hyatt, Heather Pate, Amber Pate, Whitney Rutledge and Thomas Cowan. Eleven Great Grandchildren.

5019 JOHNSON CITY - Willie Faye Johnson, 89, of Johnson City, died on Wednesday, May 24, 2017 at Lakebridge Health Care Center. She was a native of Johnson City, daughter of the late James "Jim" and Anna Carr Vaughn.

Willie Faye was a retired homemaker, mother and grandmother.

She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, two sons and a daughter preceded her in death; Larry and Jim Johnson and Sandra McCray; two brothers, Edward and Jim Vaughn; two sisters, Mary Oxendine and Betty Wilson; and a granddaughter, Michelle Johnson.

Survivors include: four daughters, Linda Johnson of Johnson City, Rita Taylor of Gray, Teresa Hathaway of Johnson City and Frankie Johnson of Lawrenceville, GA; a son, Ed Johnson of Greenville, SC; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 27, 2017 from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow in the Dogwood Chapel under the direction of Rev. Johnny Byrd at 1:00 pm. Special music will be provided by: Earl D. Fannon. A committal will be conducted at Carr cemetery following the funeral service. 5020 JOHNSON CITY - Wilma A. Snyder, age 89, of Johnson City, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 1, 2019 from the Waters of Johnson City.

Ms. Snyder was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late Eugene and Laura Lewis Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl Williams and Billy Williams; and four sisters, Anna Lee Stout, Pauline Proffitt, Stella Campbell and Beulah Williams.

Ms. Snyder had worked as a certified nursing assistant and was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, cross stitching and doing art.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Kay Meade and husband Mike, of Johnson City, Carol Shull, of Johnson City and Rod Snyder and wife Mary Ann, of Piney Flats; her grandchildren, Matt Marshall, Brooke Armistead (Ben Spearman), and Brent Shull; and her great grandchildren, Campbell Marshall and Haydn Spearman.

A private service will be conducted at the Mausoleum of Hope at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

The family would like to especially thank Amedysis Hospice and the caregivers at the Waters of Johnson City for the loving care shown to Ms. Snyder during her illness.

Anne was a member of True Gospel Freewill Baptist Church and was devoted to God and her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 37 years, T. F. Malone; and a nephew, T.J. Dougherty.

5022 JOHNSON CITY - Winnie Gillespie Ledford, 82, of Johnson City, passed peacefully away on June 22, 2022.

Winnie was a native of Kingsport, and the daughter of the late Bryan Boroughs Gillespie and Georgia Belle Lee Gillespie McClellan.

She was a 1959 graduate of Lynn View High School, Kingsport, and a 1961 Graduate of East Tennessee State College, where she received a B.S. in Education.

Winnie never met a stranger and touched lives everywhere she lived. As a proud Military Wife, she served on the home front raising a family and being very involved in the Officer’s Wives Club everywhere they were stationed. Winnie loved being a mom and was an extremely proud Grandma/Nana. She also loved traveling with her Angels and spending time with her Rose Avenue friends. There wasn’t a craft she couldn’t master, a puzzle she couldn’t solve or an issue her homemade Chex mix couldn’t fix. Winnie was a former teacher, banker, homemaker, and a member of First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City.

She will be greatly missed, but we take comfort in knowing that she has been reunited with her husband, big brother, parents as well as many other friends and family. Knowing Winnie, she has already made new friends in Heaven.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, LTC (RET) Larry Ledford, in 2017, big brother, Charlie “Cal” Gillespie, and step-father, Lee McClellan.

5023 JOHNSON CITY - Wylie Fitzhugh Milhorn, age 96, of Johnson City, TN passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2021 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Johnson County, TN to the late Robert H. Milhorn and Hattie Stout Milhorn. Wylie was a WWII Veteran for the United States Army. He later retired with the TN Department of Transportation as an Engineer Technician. Wylie was a member of First Christian Church, Johnson City, TN. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, making handmade baskets and staying very active.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pansy Fair Milhorn; three brothers, R.H. Milhorn, James S. Milhorn and Harold Milhorn. Those left to cherish his memory include his two brothers, Tommy J. Milhorn and Bill Milhorn, of Elizabethton; special nieces, Jean Slemp, Louise Carter, Shirley Pipper, Valencia Keisler (great-niece); nieces and nephews, Bobby Milhorn, Kathy Griffis, Janie Hughes, Tommy Milhorn, Jr., Jimmy Milhorn, Angela Milhorn, Linda Milhorn, Lisa Jo. 5024 JOHNSON CITY - Yvonne Lowe Arnett, age 93, of Johnson City, Tennessee, died after a brief illness in her home on Monday, August 9, 2021. She was born the daughter of the late George Wiley Lowe and Annie Blevins Lowe.

She is survived by her daughter, Carole Ross and husband Ken, of Jonesborough, TN; son, Danny Arnett and wife Marty, of Bluffton, SC; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Arnett was a member of Oakland Avenue Baptist Church and sang in the choir and was a member of the Pastor’s Sunday School Class.

A private graveside service is planned. There will be no public memorial service at this time because of Covid.

The family wishes to express thanks to Amedisys Hospice Care and especially to her friend Linda Dawson for their care during her illness.

5025 JOHNSON CITY - Yvonne Matson, 85, of Johnson City, Tennessee passed away on September 14, 2022. Yvonne was born in Elizabethton, TN to Maggie Angel and Jarvis Fair. She graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1955 and attended ETSU. Yvonne worked at McKee Eye Hospital in Johnson City before marrying James Matson of Johnson City in 1964. Following their wedding, they moved to Middle River, MD and then to Parkton, MD in 1968, where they lived for over 40 years. In 2012 they returned to Johnson City.

Yvonne was a stay-at-home mother of two, actively involved in their elementary school activities, including being President of the Recreation Council. She began working for the USPS in the 80’s, proudly serving the communities of North Baltimore County before retiring in 2003.

Yvonne was fortunate to have made many lifelong friends. Neighbors were friends: Friends were family. Her dementia hindered her ability to remain in contact with these friends, but your names were spoken often and made her smile.

Yvonne loved springtime and watching her tulips bloom under the lilac tree. She enjoyed sending greeting cards, never missing a birthday. Yvonne loved to bake for others and made the best pie crust. Ohhh the batches of blonde brownies- too many to count!

Yvonne is survived by her son, Lyle Matson; daughter, Laurie Matson; brothers, Keith and Craig Fair; sister, Maryann Fair; dear nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Matson; brother, Malcolm Fair; her parents and many aunts and uncles.

The family would like to express their appreciation to Abundant Christian Living Community for providing her with a safe and caring environment to meet her varying levels of need over the past 10 years. We are also grateful for the guidance and care provided by Amedisys during her final stages of life.

Mr. VanHoy was a native of Embreeville and had lived most of his life in Carter County. He was a son of the late Ray E. VanHoy and Addie Casey VanHoy and was also preceded in death by his wife, Naomi Dempsey VanHoy, and a brother, Ray VanHoy.
Mr. VanHoy was a retired maintenance department employee of East Tennessee State University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in the 38th Infantry Division, 149th Infantry Regiment, Company K, in the Pacific Theater. He earned three Bronze Service Stars, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and a Bronze Star. He was a member of Watauga Christian Church.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Kathy VanHoy and Ronald and Mary VanHoy, all of Watauga; three sisters, Alma Vanover, Stella King and Helen McKinney, all of Johnson City; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and his special and dear friend, Betty Curde. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 22, from the North Chapel of Morris-Baker Funeral Home with Pastor Donnie Humphrey and Mr. Tony Duncan Jr. officiating. Raymond Earnest Tolliver, age 92, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, went home to his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 7, 2014.
He was born in Shady Valley on August 12, 1921, to the late Martin and Dora Tolliver.
In addition to his parents, Raymond was preceded in death by three brothers: Calvin, Glen and Earl; three sisters: Hazel, Ruth and Sylvia; a son-in-law: Joe Copley; and a granddaughter: Kaleigh Tolliver.
Raymond was a general contractor and built hundreds of homes during his lifetime. He never really retired and continued to build things as long as he was able. He was a dedicated member of Shady Valley Baptist Church and served in various positions over the years, including men's Sunday school teacher, deacon and song leader. He loved to praise his Lord in song and continued to do so on Sundays until just a few weeks prior to his passing.
Raymond is survived by his "sweetheart" of 72 years, Lorella Greer Tolliver; children: Kenneth Tolliver and wife, Nancy, of Doe Valley, TN, Linda Arrowood and husband, Robert, of Bakersville, NC; Sharon Copley, of Waverly, TN, and Stephen Tolliver and wife, Kim, of Shady Valley, TN; grandchildren: Ken Tolliver, Julie Tolliver, Laura Arrowood Black, Allison Copley, Jaden Tolliver and Kyla Tolliver; great-grandchild: Sara Black; one sister: Stella Tolliver Payne; several nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.

Bennick “Ben” W. Fox, 87, 1805 Port Circle Dr., Johnson City, died Friday, March 30, 2012, at the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness.
Ben was a Johnson City native and a son of the late Lloyd and Gertrude Lilly Fox.
He was a longtime employee of S.B. White, where he retired as a plumber.
Ben was a member of Skyline Heights Baptist Church and a lifetime member of the East Tennessee Antique Engine Association.
Following his retirement, he enjoyed building models of local area Grist Mills and was once featured on WJHL’s Cable Country.
Ben was a former member of a western style Square Dancing Club.
He loved camping and feeding the birds.
In addition to his parents, Ben was preceded in death by an infant son; two brothers, Sherman and Bob Fox; four sisters, Irene Kissinger, Thelma Price, Varden Roller and an infant.
He is survived by his loving wife of twenty-eight years, Sue Reed Fox; his step-daughter, Cynthia Dison and husband, Larry, whom he thought of and loved as his own daughter and son-in-law, their children, Torey Crane, Parker Dison and Molly Dison, whom he thought of and loved as his own grandchildren; five step-sons and their families; his daughter, Melissa Fox Peters and husband, Charles, their children, Laura and Christopher; one brother, Clarence Fox and companion, Beulah Honeycutt; several nieces, nephews and friends, including special friend, Bill Sells; and Ben’s “girls,” cats Callie, Sandy, Sissy and Jade.

He was a retired employee of the city of Johnson City. Mr.. Bennett was a charter member of the East Watauga Avenue Baptist Church.

Billie was born on October 20, 1933 in Johnson City and was one of seven children of Pauline and Worley Hunter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Quentin D. “Q.D.” Greene; three sisters, Jean Phipps, Louise Barnes and Claire Renfro; and brother, Worley Hunter.

She is survived by her son and daughter in law Randal and Kathy Greene of Richmond, VA; two grandchildren, Randal Greene, Jr. (Julie) of Richmond, VA and Kate Hunter Greene of Nashville, TN; two great grandchildren, Lucy and Whitt Greene; several special nieces and nephews and sister-in-law, Pat Hunter. Billie’s grandchildren were the joy of her life, and they spent many memorable hours together at their “Mamaw’s” house.

Billie also leaves behind two loyal sisters, Marie Harrison and Carrie Matherly. They spent many years together shopping, baking, canning and doing crafts. The sisters were also long-time volunteers at the Johnson City Senior Center and Appalachian Fair.

Billie was a faithful member of Berea Freewill Baptist Church for 70 years. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Billie worked for many years at Appalachian Christian Village as a beautician and thought of her customers as family.

Billie lived her entire adult life in the same community. The family wishes to thank all of her wonderful neighbors and friends for their kindness. A special thanks to Shelby Head, a devoted caregiver and friend, for making it possible for Billie to remain in her home over the past few years.

5031 JOHNSON CITY – It is with a heavy heart that the following announcement be made. On February 25, 2023 Craig Allen Wiseman of Johnson City, TN passed away while at the Ballad Hospice Home in Bristol, TN after a courageous battle against cancer. Craig was the son of the late Ralph Wiseman and late Shirley Kent Wiseman. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Milton Wiseman and Ralph Steven Wiseman. Craig took great pride in his position as a Bio Medical Service Specialist with DaVita Kidney Care. In addition to his work with DaVita Kidney Care, he was also a licensed Massage Therapist. Craig always spoke highly of his fellow employees at DaVita Kidney Care and considered them his second family and valued friends. He chose to be an organ donor to science and have his remains to be cremated. Craig accepted Jesus Christ as his savior at a younger age and was ready to be with the Father in Heaven. 5032 JOHNSON CITY – Mrs. Donna Kaye Pearson Stanley, age 67, Johnson City, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Saturday May 1, 2021, at her residence following a lengthy struggle with cancer.

Donna Kaye Pearson was born August 2, 1953 in Butler, TN and she was the daughter of the late Ernest R. Pearson and Wanda B. Forrester Pearson. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Patricia Pearson Hamby.

Donna is survived by her husband, Dannie R. Stanley, Johnson City; son, Kevin Ward and wife Jerissa Ward, Elizabethton; Daughter Kim Lester and husband Larry Lester, Fall Branch; Daughter Heather Baker and husband Wayne Baker, Gray; son Jared B. 5033 JOHNSON CITY — Ben Freeland Arnett fell asleep in death on Saturday, July 16, 2016.

He was 91 years old and born January 5, 1925 in Hampton, TN. He was the son of William E. Arnett and Dovey S. Burleson of Johnson City, TN. He was one of eleven children.

He was predeceased by 5 brothers and 2 sisters.

He is survived by his daughter, Carole Yvonne Ross, husband Ken of Jonesborough, TN; his son, Danny Freeland Arnett, wife Marty of Hilton Head Island, SC; brother, Lloyd Arnett of Orlando, FL; sister, Ruth Burgess of New Smyrna Beach, FL, Thelma McPherson of Orlando, FL. He had 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He also had many nieces and nephews.

He served in the Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Stadtfeld Destroyer Escort in the Pacific. Ben worked many years as a gifted builder and craftsman in Orlando, FL and Johnson City, TN. He was loved by all who knew him, and will be remembered for his easy going nature and gentle ways. He will be missed dearly by all of his family and friends.

The family would like to thank the staff at Lake Bridge Healthcare Center for their loving care and attention in his final days.

George was born in Cranberry, NC. He was a son of the late Frank Paul and Emma Ollis McKinney. George worked as a salesman for Wade Bulla Wholesale Meats.

He was a member of King Springs Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Kathleen S. McKinney; great granddaughter, Hannah Fitzgerald; and several siblings.

Survivors include four children, Maynard McKinney and his wife Linda, Linda Conner and her husband Larry, Deborah McKinney, and Mike McKinney and his wife Andi; seven grandchildren, Heather Fitzgerald and her husband David, Natasha Conner, Joanna McKinney, George McKinney, Michael McKinney, Courtney McKinney, and Gavin Russell; three great grandchildren, David Fitzgerald III, Tanner Thornton, and Elliott Conner; two sisters, Anne Ollis and Wilma Boone; brother, Jimmy Allen McKinney; and several nieces and nephews.

The family of George D. McKinney will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, January 4, 2016, in the Morris-Baker Oak Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 7 p.m. on Monday under the direction of Rev. Jerry Cornett.

5035 JOHNSON CITY — Marie Ward Shanks, 90, Johnson City went home to be with her Lord Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at the Christian Care Center after a brief illness.

A native of Butler, she was a daughter of the late Selmer Scott and Cora Eller Ward. She had lived most of her life in Elizabethton. She was a graduate of The Watauga Academy. Marie was retired from the East Tennessee Undergarment Factory. Until her illness, Marie was very active in her church, Lynn Valley Baptist Church where she was a member of the Choir. Marie along with her very special friend Louise Puckett was overseers in the kitchen at Lynn Valley for many years. She sang with a Trio for many years going to different churches in East Tennessee.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William " Bill" Shanks, March 11, 2004; by a brother, Glen Ward; and a sister, Betty Cannon.

Survivors include a son, Gary Swift, Jonesborough; a daughter, Gail Swift Trotter, Pelzer, South Carolina; her brother, Robert Ward, Butler; and her church family, especially the choir.

A Service to celebrate the life of Marie will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2016, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Johnson City. Music will be provided by the Lynn Valley Baptist Church Choir. Active Pallbearers will be Deacons of Lynn Valley. 5036 JOHNSON CITY — Mr. Fred Douglas Duncan, 89, of Johnson City, passed away on Tuesday, February 16, 2016, at Hermitage Health Center.

He was the son of the late W.A. and Eliza Greenwell Duncan, Sr. and was born in Old Butler.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Alma Harrison and a brother, W.A. Duncan, Jr.

Mr. Duncan attended Watauga Academy, graduated from Elizabethton High School and also attended Steed College of Business. He worked at May Mead Lime Company of Mountain City, Giant Food Markets, Winn Dixie and retired from United Oil Company. Following his retirement he repaired clocks. He was a faithful member of Calvary and Sinking Creek Baptist Churches.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-six years, Arcadia Floyd Duncan of the home; a sister, Helen Duncan of Elizabethton, a nieces Brenda Brown, a great niece, Lisa Montgomery, a great-nephew, Joe Brown, great-great nephews, Seth and Cody Montgomery and Houston Brown, all of Hampton. He also leaves a host of cousins and friends.

A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Duncan will be conducted on Thursday, February 18, 2016, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. David Montgomery and Rev. Cody Montgomery officiating. Music will be under the direction of Seth and Cody Montgomery.

The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 - 7:00 PM on Thursday prior to the service and at the home at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Friday, February 19, 2016, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. 5037 JOHNSON CITY — Mr. Jim D. Sutphin, 78, of Johnson City, passed away on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

Mr. Sutphin was a lifelong resident of East Tennessee. He was the son of the late Charles and Mamie Wilson Sutphin. He worked for Burlington Mills for 40 years until his retirement. After his retirement, he went to work for Steve King Diary Farm for several years. Also, he was a devoted Christian.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Sutphin was preceded in death by one sister, Helen Guinn; two brothers, George "Bill" Sutphin and Raymond Sutphin; one niece, Carolyn Bowman; and one nephew, Jason Edwards.

Survivors include: one son, Charles Sutphin and his wife Cathy; one sister, Betty Edwards and her husband Wayne; three brothers, Carl Sutphin and his wife Joanne, Steve Sutphin, and Richard Sutphin; and several grandkids, nieces, and nephews.

A graveside committal service will be conducted at 2 PM on Friday, July 8, 2016, in the Roselawn Memorial Park with Mr. Jerry Carr and Pastor Mike Richards officiating. Ms. Masters was born in Washington County and daughter of the late Paul C. & Texanna Street Brumit.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Bobbie Brumit, Johnnie Brumit and Rondal Brumit; and two sisters, Lucille and Paulette. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include two sons, Donald Willis (Judy), Jonesborough and Mark Britt, Lexington, KY; grandson, Dalton L. Willis; and one brother, Jimmy Brumit (Bonnie), Johnson City.

5039 JOHNSON CITY — Nola L. Timbs, 80, Johnson City passed away on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at the home of a daughter after a brief illness.

Nola was born July 28, 1935 in Elizabethton to the late Sidney & Lessie Pearl Sheets Byers. Nola lived most of her life in Elizabethton with the exception of the past 10 years while living with her daughter in Johnson City.

She was of the Christian Faith and a member of Borderview Christian Church for many years. Nola will be remembered for her love of Children having raised seven of her own along with assisting with caring for many other children throughout her lifetime.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Roy Haskel "Hack" Timbs on February 11, 1991; two sisters, Irene Byars and Betty Byers; and four brothers, Carl, Ray, John & Terry Byers.

She is survived by her children, Steven (Suzan) Timbs, Kennedy, Texas, Rita Timbs (Robert) Gouge, Bakersville, North Carolina, Timothy (Sharon Culler), Elizabethton, Sandy Timbs of Johnson City, Vickie(Darrell) Woods, Elizabethton, Rick (Barbara) Timbs, Jonesborough and Bill (Denise) Timbs, Elizabethton; three sisters, Hazel (Larry) Buckles, Ruth Roark and Mandy (Dr. David) Freeman; one brother, Jerry Byers; 17 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.

5040 JOHNSON CITY — Walter Stanley Patrick, 90, of 780 S. Austin Springs Road, Johnson City, passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2016, at his residence.

He was a native of Washington County and was a son of the late Rev. D. C. Patrick and Lurie Bell Greene Patrick. Mr. Patrick retired from Klopman Mills and was a World War II veteran having served in Rome, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was wounded in France in 1944 and received a purple heart, four bronze stars and awarded the World War II Victory Medal.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Anne Shoun Patrick in 1994; a son, Charles Patrick; a brother, Donald Patrick; a sister, Willie Andies; an infant sister, Florence Patrick; two sisters-in-law, Theo and Rose Patrick and two brothers-in-law, Ralph Andies and Howard Grindstaff.

Survivors include a son, Roger Patrick and a daughter, Carol Cretsinger both of Johnson City; a sister, Margaret Grindstaff of Elizabethton; two nieces, Brenda Miller and husband, Kenneth and Marie Frazier and husband, Robert all of Elizabethton; a son-in-law, David Cretsinger of Johnson City; also several other nieces and nephews.

5041 JOHNSON CITY — William J. "Bill" Gentry, age 81, of Johnson City, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at Cornerstone Village, Johnson City following a lengthy illness.

A native of Mountain City, TN, he was a son of the late Milton John and Chessie Severt Gentry. Mr. Gentry served in the Army National Guard. He was a member of a non-denominational Christian Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Gentry was preceded in death by two sons, William Dean Gentry, Joseph C. Gentry; 2 sisters, Donna Kay Asbury and infant sister, Betty Gentry.

Survivors include his son, Jeff Gentry and wife Pam, Johnson City; two brothers, Bert Gentry, Milford, Delaware, Elmer Gentry, Houston, TX; sisters, Sue Manuel, Damascus, VA, Ruby Hanson, Blountville, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Gentry will be conducted at 12:00 PM on Friday, April 30, 2016, in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Mr. Jerome Frandle and Mr. Laren Spellman, ministers, officiating. 5042 JOHNSON CITY — William Paul "Bill" Grindstaff, 88, of Johnson City, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at his home.

He was a native of Washington County, son of the late Serena Bell Grindstaff Grindstaff. He was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Viet Nam having proudly served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force retiring in 1969. He attended Keystone Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Margie Ledwell Grindstaff of the home; children, Kenneth Hodge, Barbara Furchess, Sharon Boles, Cindy Abel, and Janice Swanner; thirteen grandchildren; twenty five great grandchildren; one great great grandson; a special grandson, Chad Abel; a special niece, Norma Scott.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 3, 2016, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home from 4:30 until 6:00 p.m.

A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, April 4, 2016, at 10:45 a.m. at the Mountain Home National Cemetery under the direction of a VA Chaplain. The Boone Dam VFW and the Tennessee National Guard will accord military honors. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

5043 JOHNSON CITY — Teddy Wayne McKeehan, 65, of Milligan College, Tenn., passed away Thursday, January 20, 2022, following a courageous battle with COVID. He was born on June 10, 1956, to the late Ted McKeehan and Doris Walker McKeehan.
In addition to his parents, Teddy was preceded in death by Maxie Patton McKeehan, his college sweetheart to whom he was married for over 30 years.
After graduating from Happy Valley High School in 1974, Teddy played basketball at Steed College and received his BS in History from East Tennessee State University.
After teaching history and coaching basketball for a few years in Cherokee County, Ga., and seven years at Volunteer High School in Church Hill, Tenn., he and his late wife started McKeehan Lawn Service, which he ran for 37 years.
Teddy Wayne loved sports and was a diehard Florida Gator football fan. He also enjoyed playing golf with his brother, sister-in-law, uncles, and late father. Teddy was usually willing to go anywhere and do anything as long as it got him out of the house, but especially if it was a trip to Freddy’s for a turtle sundae. Every winter, he enjoyed taking extended trips to Las Vegas and Florida. For his talents in basketball, football, and track, he was inducted into the Happy Valley and Carter County Sports Halls of Fame in 2021. He was loved by all who met him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his brother, Eddie Eugene (Sherry); sister, Sherry Ann Hunt (Dave); nieces, Brandi Forbes, Whitney Forbes and Megan Patton; nephew, Seth Patton; great-niece, Logan Deakins; stepmother, Mary; stepsister, Lorri (Ronnie) Carver; mother-in-law, Wanda Patton; brother-in-law, Jeff Patton (Teresa); aunts, Nancy Verran (Don) and Betty Archer (Ron); uncles, William “Bud” (Loretta), Tony (Jane), Jackie (Kim), Bobby (Devonna) and Howard “Bud” (Phyllis); and girlfriend, Kim Rowe.

5044 JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - Dennis E. Lilly, 79, of 1612 Woodridge Drive, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in Wellmont Hospital, Bristol, Tenn., following a brief illness. Mr. Lilly was a native of Beckley, moving to Johnson City in 1952. In 1957, he moved to Amherst, Mass., returning to Johnson City in 1967. He was the son of the late Ira B. and Lessie Ann Hubbard Lilly. He retired in 1985 from East Tennessee State University where he served as director of foreign students and religious affairs and assistant director of the University Student Center. From 1952 to 1957 he was recreation director of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. He served on the administration of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, from 1957 to 1967. Mr. Lilly attended Concord College, Athens, and graduated with a bachelor's of arts in music from Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, Ky. He received his master's degree in music and recreation from West Virginia University, Morgantown. He was a member and elder of Erwin Presbyterian Church, where he served as choir director for 18 years, retiring this year. He formerly served as choir director of First United Methodist, Johnson City, and First United Methodist Church, Elizabethton, Tenn. Mr. Lilly was a member of the United Commercial Travelers, Council No. 552, where he was formerly counselor for the State of Tennessee. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 486 F and AM, Johnson City, Jericho Shriner's Temple, Kingsport, a former Eagle Scout and scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America. Mr. Lilly was a member of American Legion Post No. 24 of Johnson City. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Ray Lilly; and a daughter, Suzanne Lilly James. Survivors include his wife, Katherine "Katy" Lilly; three sons, David R. Lilly of Johnson City, Michael E. Lilly of Sanford, N.C., and Jason D. 5045 Johnson City, TN – Clyde Lester Garland, Sr.” Poppy”, 74, of Johnson City, peacefully departed this life to join his Heavenly Father on April 2, 2023, at Franklin Woods Hospital with his family by his side after his courage and long battle with cancer. Clyde was born on April 10, 1948, to the late Harlow and Mae Taylor Garland in Washington County, TN.

Throughout his life, he enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, hunting, and riding around the neighborhood on his scooter. Clyde proudly defended his country during the Vietnam War from 1968-1972 serving in the United States Marine Corps. He was also a recipient of the Purple Heart during his service. Upon his honorable discharge as a Private First Class, he then continued to proudly serve his county by joining the Army National Guard for nearly 30 years.

Following his return from Vietnam, he worked at Klopman Mills as a Supply Manager and finally retired working at Mountain Home VA. Clyde was member of Cherry Grove Baptist Church. He showed immense love and kindness to everyone who met him. His humble and kind spirit was with him into his final days here on earth.

In addition to his parents, Clyde is preceded in death by his sister, Cleo McNabb; brothers-in-law, BJ Hensley, Delmer Story and Melvin Story; sister-in-law, Judy Stills; several nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years Linda Story Garland; children, Clyde (Crystal) Garland and Adam (Sarah) Garland; eight grandchildren, Clyde (Brianna) Garland, Ryan (Sierra) Wainscott, Savannah (Tyler) Brewster, Caitie Garland, Charlie (Mariah) Wainscott, Adam “AJ”, Oliver and Elliott Garland; nine great-grandchildren, Gabriel Garland, Patrick, and Griffin Taylor, Olivia Wainscott, Zaiden Brewster, Saige (Little Bit) Taylor, Elli Brewster, Ivagail Wainscott and soon arriving Baby Boy Wainscott; brothers, Samuel (Patty) Garland and Ralph (Sandy) Garland; sister, Peggy Hensley; brothers-in-law, Clyde (Patsy) Story and James (Nada) Story; sisters-in-law, Brenda (Paul) Bailey, Patty Artrip and MaryAnn (Tony) Lerma; special friends, Susie Casteel and Brenda Dugger; several special nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of dear friends.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Wednesday, April 5, 2023, at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home in Jonesborough, TN. Funeral Services will follow at 7:00 PM, with Pastor Tommy Clark and Pastor Scott Hayes officiating.

Graveside services with full military honors will take place at 1:00 PM, Thursday, April 6, 2023, at Mountain Home National Cemetery. The family will meet at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home by 12:30 PM, to go in procession. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.

5046 JOHNSON CITY- Hassie B. Campbell, 98, passed away on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at the Agape Nursing Home.

Mrs. Campbell was a member of True Gospel FWB Church in Johnson City.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Monroe and Ida Bennett, husband, Lawrence Campbell, daughters; Delores Campbell, and Peggy Campbell Hughes, five brothers; Lester, Cecil, Monroe, Burnett, and Rev. Charlie Bennett.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Sexton, four grandchildren, nephew, William Bennett, niece, Carolyn Nickles, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services for Mrs. Campbell will be Saturday, December 29, 2018 at 1:30 P.M. in the chapel of Woodall Anderson Dugger Funeral Home with Rev. Gene Deaton officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until the service hour.

Graveside services will follow the service at Monte Vista Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

5047 JOHNSON CITY- Mildred Louise Keys, 87, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2018 at Lakebridge Nursing Home.

She was a native of Piney Flats and a daughter of the late Lorenzo and Molly Crowe Hawk.

Mrs. Keys was a member of Clark Street Baptist Church and was retired from Texas Instruments. She was an avid sports enthusiast and enjoyed playing golf, softball, and basketball. She received the YMCA Woman of the month award at the age of 76 for playing basketball.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Niles Keys; sisters, Dorothy Cullop, Edith Thomas, Joanne Shina; brothers, George and Fleenor Hawk.

She is survived by her brother, Chuck Hawk of Talbot, TN, niece, Marilyn Thomas Lowe of Powder Springs, GA, several in laws, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Mrs. Keys will be conducted at 12 Noon Thursday, April 5, 2018 in the West Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Rev. Gene Deaton officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 until 12 noon. Graveside services will be held following the service at Roselawn Memory Gardens.

5048 JOHNSON CITY- Mr. Delmer William Lowe, 80, of 1825 W. Lakeview Dr., went home to be with the Lord,on Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at his home. A native of Washington County, he was the son of the late George and Annie Blevins Lowe. Delmer was a U.S. Army veteran, 82 Airborne, and retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a Rural Carrier. He was a Mason with the Jonesborough Lodge. Mr. Lowe was a lifelong Christian, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be greatly missed. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Baby Girl Lowe, his great grandson, Luke Smalling; six brothers, James, Lonza, Dan, Eugene, Roby, and Selmer Lowe; three sisters, Ethel Sheets, Thelma Crocetta, and Bessie Peters. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Roberta Crowe Lowe, of the home; son, George Lowe of Mulberry, FL; two daughters, Teresa Lowe Smalling and husband Tom of Johnson City and Barbara Lowe Tucker and husband Jerry of Gray; sisters Georgia Morgan and Yvonne Arnet both of Johnson City; five grandchildren, Duane and Scott Smalling, Chasity Ferrando, Wes Tucker, and Lindsey Jessen; 15 great grandchildren, and several special nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends Friday, July 29, 2011, from 6-8pm, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. Services will be held, 8pm, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home, South Chapel. Burial will be held, Saturday, 10am, at Monte Vista Memorial Gardens. .Brother Roy Tucker and Chaplain Victor Tucker will be officiating. Having intended and expected to leave for the Army for a few days I considered and believe it to be my imperious duty to make this my Last Will and Testament on condition I should never return.

1st. After the payment of all my just debts I desire the following disposition to be made of my land and all my personal estate.

1st. Then I desire that my father and mother and sister, Paulina remain in the undisputed possession of all the land and property I claim and own in Johnson County and state of Tennessee in Dist. No. 3rd during their natural lives and after the decease of my parents, I desire that my land and all my personal property be divided between my two sisters, Paulina and Ann equally.

2nd. I do hereby nominate and appoint Alexander McEwen my Executor as to this my last Will and Testament.
