4801 JOHNSON CITY - Joe Dayton Sheffield, 84, Johnson City, died Thursday, August 4, 2022, at Abundant Christian Living, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Joe was a native of Carter County and was a resident of Johnson City since 1960. He was a son of the late Hunter Dayton and Lottie Ann Street Sheffield.

Joe was a 1957 graduate of Elizabethton High School. Following graduation, he accepted a position as a mailroom courier at the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington D.C. In 1960, Joe returned to Johnson City, and he and his brother, Brownie, opened Junction Shell Service Center. The brothers then entered the car business as Sheffield Auto Mart. Through this business, Joe become a pillar of the local auto industry. They owned and operated the International Scout and Dodge franchises, and in 1982, Joe and Brownie were awarded the Johnson City Pontiac, Buick & GMC franchises. They were also active in real estate holdings and integral in the development of the Bristol Highway Motor Mile.

Joe formerly served as a Washington County Commissioner and was a member of River of Life Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers-in-law, Bill Grindstaff, Herman Cody, and Randy Hicks.

Joe is survived by three children, Michael Sheffield (Katie), Piney Flats, Melissa “Missy” Bible (Doug), Telford, and Evan Roswall (Fernando), Knoxville; four grandchildren, Felicia Sheffield (Josh), Gray, Dayton Sheffield, Johnson City, Nicholas Sheffield, Piney Flats, and Seth Bible, Telford; two great-grandchildren, Jovan and Sydney Roberts, Gray; one brother, Brownie Sheffield (Jeri), Gray; two sisters, Pat Grindstaff, Johnson City, and Neva Cody, Elizabethton; several nieces, nephews, cousins and special lifelong friends, Ray & Jean Adams, Wendell Shipley, Roger Shepherd, Bobby & Gaye Whitson, Rodney & Juanita Fullerton, and Bill Harrell.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Abundant Christian Living, especially Ava, Billy, Janice #1, Janice #2, Mary, Patricia, Tameri, and the staff of Amedisys Hospice, for the excellent care given to Joe.

The graveside funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at 2:00 P.M. in the Mausoleum Chapel of Washington County Memory Gardens, with Pastor Donnie Humphrey, officiating.

4802 JOHNSON CITY - John B. "Peeps" Holsclaw, Sr., age 78, of Johnson City, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 29, 2018 from Franklin Woods Community Hospital.

John was born in Elizabethton to the late Fred and Susan Harmon Holsclaw. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Hendrix Holsclaw; an infant daughter, Christy Michelle Holsclaw; two brothers, Charlie Holsclaw and Claude Holsclaw; and two sisters, Pauline Shell and Ola Campbell.

John attended East Tennessee State University and the University of Tennessee, where he played football on a scholarship. He was the former Carter County Property Assessor for twenty seven years and was a member of Elizabethton Church of Christ, where he had served as a Deacon. John also was the announcer for Carter County sports on WBEJ for forty one years and was known as "The Voice of the Cyclones." He was a former Lyons Club member and enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and announcing sporting games and attending sporting events.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Tammy Holsclaw-Jones and husband Randy, of Johnson City, John Holsclaw, Jr. and wife Sheri, of Johnson City and Kim Buckner and husband Brian, of Elizabethton; eight grandchildren, Brooke Jones-Cannon and husband Ethan, Casey Jones, Alex Jones, Taylor Holsclaw, Kaeli Sams, Dana Belle Holsclaw, Hannah Holsclaw and Holly Holsclaw; seven siblings, Maxine Gagliano, of Elizabethton, Martha Forbes, of Johnson City, Juanita Pansock, of Elizabethton, Arthur Holsclaw and wife Jeannie, of Elizabethton, Barbara Millsaps, of Elizabethton, Betty Jean Maupin and husband Jim, of Elizabethton, and Willie Holsclaw and wife Leota, of Elizabethton. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of John B. "Peeps" Holsclaw, Sr. will be conducted at 5:00 PM on Saturday, December 8, 2018 in the Elizabethton High School Gymnasium with Mr. Roby Ellis, Mr. Dennis Pierce and Mr. Eddy Craft, officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM in the gymnasium, prior to the service on Saturday or at the residence at other times.

The committal and entombment will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, December 9, 2018 in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Steve Roberts, Jeff Holsclaw, Norman Hodge, Ronnie Taylor, Alex Jones, Brian Buckner, Ethan Cannon and Dale Fair. Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews, his church family, all coaches and ball players throughout the years, whom he loved so much, including his little league ball players, his teammates at Elizabethton High School and University of Tennessee, the staff of WBEJ radio, his broadcasting associates and all of his special friends.

4803 JOHNSON CITY - John E. Garrison, 75, of Johnson City, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2019 at his home. He was born in Washington, D.C. to Ben Clyde Garrison Sr., and Ruth Buckner Garrison and later moved to Morganton, NC.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his first wife, Janice Poteat Garrison, his nephew, Garrison Nidiffer, and his brother-in-law, Ed Ogburn.

John graduated from the Kentucky Military Institute, attended the University of North Carolina and obtained his Masters of Business from East Tennessee State University. He pursued several ventures before opening the House of Ribs in Johnson City with his brother. John spent forty years as an Independent Representative for Caesars Entertainment and co-owner with his wife Rebecca, of "Players Travel Bettor". He was the longest tenured representative, known as "The Godfather" among his colleagues.

Those left to cherish John's memory include his loving wife, Rebecca Moore Garrison, his daughter, Elizabeth Gray Garrison Moore, son, John Clyde Garrison, grandchildren: Noah G. Moore, and Jacob Benjamin Moore; his siblings: Nancy Ogburn, Ben Clyde Garrison, Jr., and his wife Janice, Laura Elizabeth Garrison; nieces and nephews: Zoe Ogburn, Stephanie Lawhon, Heather Lowe, and Wendy Garrison; several great nieces and nephews, mother-in-law, Georgia Moore, and too many special friends to mention.

The family will greet friends to share memories on Thursday, March 14, 2019 from 11:00 am until a Celebration of John's life at 1:00 pm in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services with Pastor James Nipper officiating. A Graveside service will be held at 2:30 pm on Thursday at Washington County Memory Gardens. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

4804 JOHNSON CITY - John E. Scalf Jr., 68, of Juniper Cottage in Greeneville, died Wednesday at Greene Valley Developmental Center in Greeneville, where he had lived for the past 40 years.
Mr. Scalf was a native of Washington County who had lived most of his life in Greeneville. He was the son of the late Ruby (Bowers) and the Rev. John E. Scalf Sr.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Fred (Ruby) Dulaney; one nephew: Wayne Dulaney; and several half-brothers and half-sisters.
The family provided the following statement: "John loved attending church at New Jerusalem Free Will Baptist Church. He also attended Bible study at Greene Valley. He loved listening to gospel music and playing the guitar.
"John had also enjoyed coming to Johnson City with Vickie Stubblefield and Wayne Hyatt to eat with his sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Earl Hammer."
Additional survivors include: two brothers and their wives: Harold and Shelia Scalf of Watauga and Charles and Tresia Scalf of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews; his family members" and "wonderful caregivers" at Greene Valley Developmental Center, whom he loved very much, the family noted.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday and from 1-2 p.m. Sunday at Morris-Baker Funeral Home, 2001 Oakland Avenue in Johnson City.
The funeral service will follow visitation at 2 o'clock Sunday in the South Chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Mike Young will officiate.
Interment will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Josh Ledford, Wayne Hyatt, Mark Barner, Neal Holt, Steve Inscore, Danny Copas and Justin Elby.
Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Munir Ahmed, Dr. Devi Deeann, Dr. Marlen Mathiesen, Joyce Daniels, Debbie Bryant, Kay Payne and Dr. Bud Meece.

4805 JOHNSON CITY - John Eugene Archer, 64 of Johnson City, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

A lifelong native of Johnson City, he is the son of the late Warren Archer and Mary Lou Archer (Dr. John Platt). In addition to his parents and step-father, John was also preceded in death by his brother, Douglas Warren Archer.

John was an avid golfer and loved talking with people; he'd never met a stranger. He leaves behind many family, friends, and loved ones.

A celebration of Johnny's life will be conducted on Sunday, May 19th at The Barn at Boone Falls Reserve beginning at 6:30 pm.

4806 JOHNSON CITY - John Glover, age 68, of Johnson City, passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2021 at Johnson City Medical Center. John was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late Raymond and Elizabeth Maier Glover. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Daniel Glover and Leroy Johnson.

John Glover was a member of Heartland Fellowship Church and enjoyed weightlifting.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Debbie Glover of the home; his son, Kurt Glover and wife Madelyn of Limestone, TN; his grandson, Asher Glover of Limestone, TN; two brothers, Steve Glover of Thomasville, NC and Paul Glover of Kingsport, TN; several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of John Glover will be conducted at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, April 6, 2021 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Marvin Slagle officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Tuesday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 am on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 in the Lyons Chapel Cemetery.

4807 JOHNSON CITY - John H. Hughes, age 82, of Johnson City, TN, died October 16, 2021 at the James H. Quillen VA Community Living Center. He was born in Bakersville, North Carolina on August 1, 1939. He graduated from Bowman High School in 1957. Mr. Hughes served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1965 as a flight deck engineer on the USS Midway. After almost 30 years of service, Mr. Hughes retired from Alemite Company in Johnson City as a shipping clerk. He was a member of the Pinecrest Baptist Church in Johnson City, TN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton B. Hughes and Hazel Hughes Johnson, stepfather
Clifford Johnson; one sister and brother-in-law Ann Hughes Ward and Warfield Ward; and one brother Roger S. Hughes.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter Heather Hughes of Johnson City, TN; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend, Lin Nelen.
A service to honor the life of John H. Hughes will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Thursday, October 21, 2021 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Pastor Nathan Jennings officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM prior to the service.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted at Happy Valley Memorial Park following the service on Thursday. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

4808 JOHNSON CITY - John Howard Hammitt, 93, of Johnson City, passed away Wednesday October 6, 2019 at Four Oaks Health Care Center in Jonesborough. John served his Nation in the United States Army in Germany during WWII.

He was born in Johnson City but spent most of his life in Barberton OH, where he worked for B&W and retired from there after many years of dedicated service. John attended Locus St. Church of Christ and was a proud member of The American Legion.

John was preceded in death by his by parents; Mack James and Elizabeth (Harrison) Hammitt, his first wife; Pansy Jane (Humphries) Hammitt, his second wife; Barbara Louis Hammit, brothers; Samuel and Floyd Hammitt, half-brother; Herbert Harrison, and sister; Mildred Vance.

Those left to cherish his memory include his sons; James Hammitt (Sandra) of Erwin, Jeff Hammitt (Brenda) of Perrysville OH, Joe Hammit of Johnson City, and Wayne Britt of Spruce Pine NC, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren..

The Hammitt family will honor John's life with a Graveside on Friday November 8, 2019 at Monte Vista Memorial Park.

4809 JOHNSON CITY - John Joseph Markland, 78, of Johnson City, passed away at the James H. Quillen Veteran Affairs Medical Center on Friday, September 28, 2018.

He was a native of Johnson city, a son of the late Preacher Fred and Minnie Gaddy Markland.

John was a true soldier for the Lord. He was a Deacon at Dry Creek Free Will Baptist Church, though he could be found in a different church somewhere almost every night of the week. He enjoyed singing, worshipping, visiting, and many other activities with his church families. He loved to share gospel music with others and was known by many as ‘The CD Man’, which was his own personal ministry.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by: one daughter, Louann Markland; several siblings, Gene Markland, Marie Barnett, Louise Howell, Bill Markland, and his twin, James Markland.

Survivors include: his wife of nearly fifty-three years, Jessie Markland; four children, Will Markland and his wife Mary, Hope Dugger and her husband Chris, Rachel Dickerson, and Joshua Markland; brother, Robert Markland and his wife Susan; several grandchildren, Caleb Markland, Audrey Markland, Dakota Dickerson, Nevaeh Dickerson, Kaylee Markland, and Ava Markland; brother-in-law, Hubert Barnett; sisters-in-law, Jackie Markland and Mary Markland; special nephew, Tim Barnett; as well as many more treasured friends and family members.

The family of John Markland will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, October 2, 2018, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow, officiated by Pastors Terry Jones and Bobby Miller. A committal service will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 3, 2018 at Monte Vista Memorial Park.

4810 JOHNSON CITY - John M. Young, 89, of Johnson City died Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at the Abundant Living Care Center. He was a native of Bakersville, North Carolina, son of the late Ernest Frank and Ruth Evangeline Slagle Young.

John was a retired accountant for the Volunteer Natural Gas Company since 1980 after 27 years of service. He continued working at Edwards and Associates and the Sundance Group Inc. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club.

He was a member of the Central Baptist Church since 1953.

In addition to his parents, a sister Mary Kathleen Young and granddaughter Haley Paige Young all preceded him in death.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 68 years, Dolores White Young; a daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Dennis Davenport of Johnson City; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Mark and Lora Young of Johnson City, Bruce and Revonda Young of Asheville, NC and Michael and Marcia Young of Lakeville, MA; nineteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 8, 2021 from 2-4:00 pm at the Central Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 pm under the direction of Rev. Gene Elliott and Rev. Tony Martin will provide music. A committal service will be conducted on Monday, August 9, 2021 at 10:00 am in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

4811 JOHNSON CITY - John Russell Perkins, Johnson City a minister of the gospel, went home on April 14th at the age of 86. His loving spirit left this earth while being cared for at his home by his dedicated and selfless wife, Gail. He was a resident of Carter County. John was born on October 28, 1935 in Johnson County to Clint and Pearl Atwood Perkins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clint and Pearl Perkins, a brother Clint Jr. Perkins, and a sister Peggy Emmert. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gail Burchfield Perkins, and his four children: Donna Webb and husband Steve, Debra Scalf and husband Larry, John D. Perkins and wife Jenny, and Judith Lewis; 14 grandchildren: Michael Johnson,
Nathan Webb, Clint Webb, Bree Rhea, Sable Long, Dillon Hoyle, Legend Scalf, Keet Scalf, Jordan Carder, Jessi Norman, John D. “Trey” Perkins Jr., Jillian Perkins, William “Kyler” Lewis, and MaKenna Lewis; 24 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
John was ordained in 1967 and served the Lord at a multitude of churches in the region for 50 years before retiring in 2015. He graduated from Wake Forest University in 1975. He had numerous certifications and served in various positions during his career in the ministry. He was a chaplain at the James H. Quillen VA in for eight years. He was a farmer at heart and lived his life according to the Farmer’s Creed: “....I believe my life will be measured ultimately by what I have done for my fellowman, and by this standard I fear no judgment. I believe that when a man comes to the end and sums up his days, he should be able to stand tall, and feel pride in the life he has lived. I believe that my God, and my work makes all this possible.” He earned the recognition of Farmer of the Year. John took pride in the fact he related so well to those in his congregations due to the diversity of his work history and strong work ethic.
The family will have a private celebration of life to honor him at Memorial Funeral Home and Pastor Perkins will be laid to rest at Happy Valley Memorial Park.The grandsons will be pallbearers.

4812 JOHNSON CITY - Joni Perkins Cannon, 72, Johnson City, passed away Saturday, October 2, 2021, at Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport.

Joni was a Johnson City native and a daughter of the late Woodrow Wilson and Kathleen Kelsey Perkins.

She was a 1966 graduate of Science Hill High School, and prior to her recent decline in health, was completing her B.S. Degree at E.T.S.U.

Joni retired in 2012 from E.T.S.U. where she worked as an Executive Aide for twenty years. She was Founder and Director of Cap the Gap for children in foster care for Carter, Johnson, Unicoi and Greene Counties, as well as a Charter Board Member of Isaiah 117 House.

Joni was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her husband of fifty years, Dale H. Cannon; her daughter, Tara Thomas and husband John Thomas, Elizabethton; her son, Kyle Cannon and wife Melinda Cannon, Mount Carmel; five grandchildren, John Elijah and Elizabeth Thomas; Molly, Jack and Luke Cannon; two sisters, Jeannie Hartnagel and husband Robert, White, GA; Mary Austin and husband Dwayne, Johnson City; two nieces, Amy and Keri Austin; two nephews, Michael Swink and wife Kathy, Tony Swink and wife Tammy, and their children Tommy, Savannah and Cecelia.

The memorial service celebrating Joni's life will be conducted Sunday, October 24, 2021, at 5:00 P.M., in the Sanctuary of Our Savior Lutheran Church, 212 Sunset Dr., Johnson City, TN 37604, with Pastor Jim Nipper, officiating. The service will be live-streamed at oursaviorlutheran.com.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 3:00-5:00 P.M. in the Parish Hall of the church.

Those planning to attend the visitation and/or service will be required to wear a mask or protective face covering, and are requested to practice appropriate social distancing.

4813 JOHNSON CITY - Joy Lee Sechrest Allen, 90, of Johnson City, went to be with the Lord on June 8, 2023, following a beautiful life.

She was born in Johnson City to Paul and Alma Lee (Rowe) Sechrest. She was a graduate of Science Hill High School and East Tennessee State University and taught high school English, speech, and drama in Baltimore, MD and Kingsport, TN prior to her marriage to Dr. Charles E. Allen in 1956.

Joy was a gifted actress and singer, and one of the funniest people ever to set foot on a stage. Her acting and directing prowess were evident in many fine productions at the Johnson City Community Theatre and at First Christian Church, where she was a longtime, faithful member. She belonged to the Johnson City Music Club, the Washington County Medical Auxiliary, and the Shady Oaks Garden Club, and her beautiful flower arrangements often took first place at adjudicated flower shows. She loved to entertain and was a superb cook and warm and welcoming hostess. For many years she blessed numerous women through her classes in make-up and fashion and her clothing store, Joy Allen Classics.

But undoubtedly Joy’s starring role was as wife and mother. She and Ed were shining examples of loving Christian marriage and parenting. Joy managed a hectic schedule with aplomb. She took enthusiastic interest in the myriad school, extracurricular, and church activities of four children. She always had time to listen, and her counsel was wise and to-the-point. By example she taught life lessons in being grateful, generous, kind, and unselfish. There was a delicious home-cooked supper on the table every night. She made every holiday festive and joyous. “Gahghi” and her three grandchildren mutually adored each other, and she delighted in planning exciting activities and treats for them. She never lost her playfulness or her curiosity about learning new things. She always took time to let Ed know how special he was to her and how very much she loved him. Her faith in God was quiet and deep, and she loved and served him with her whole heart.

Joy is preceded in death by her parents and by the love of her life, Ed, her husband of 56 years. She is survived by her children Jill Allen Lagerberg, Charles Allen Jr. and his wife Barbara, John Allen and his wife Lesley, and Jennifer Allen; by her grandchildren Charles (Chip) Allen III, Wes Allen, and Carin Gunter and her husband Evan; and by her sister Gail Thompson.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the four wonderful caregivers who loved Joy as if she were their own mother and whose tender care made her last years peaceful and happy: Rita Snodgrass, Teresa Davis, Shirley Dover, and Jennifer Tipton; and to Amedisys Hospice for their compassionate service.

Family and friends will gather at Monte Vista Memorial Park, 1900 E. Oakland Avenue, on Sunday, June 11 at 2:00 PM for the graveside committal service.

4814 JOHNSON CITY - Joyce Murr Sawyer, 84, of Johnson City, TN passed away peacefully on December 25 2022 after an extended illness. Joyce was born in 1938 to the late Walter and Daisy Murr in Johnson City. She was retired from the State of Tennessee, Department of General Services and the Department of Defense, USAF. She was a member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church and the Good News Sunday school. Joyce was also a member of the Johnson City Woman’s Club. She will be missed by family and friends.

Joyce was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, John Sawyer, four brothers, George, Walt, Bud, and John as well as 3 sisters, Dorothy, Sabra, and Brenda. She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Lynn Sawyer and husband Dan Cantrell of Kingsport, TN. Also survived by 3 sisters, Louise (Lou) Burzynski of Jonesborough, TN, Edna (Lester) Baldwin, Pace, FL, Linda (John) Miller, Jonesborough, TN; 3 brothers, Glenn (Virginia) Murr, Jonesborough, TN, Michael (Barbara) Murr, Jonesborough, TN, Ted Murr, Johnson City, TN, and numerous nieces and nephews she loved dearly.

A gathering of family and friends will take place on Friday, December 30, 2022 from 12 to 1pm at Tetrick Funeral Services of Johnson City. Funeral services will start at 1pm and Interment will take place at Washington County Memorial Gardens.

4815 JOHNSON CITY - Joyce Norman, age 68, of Johnson City, Tennessee went to be with her Lord on Sunday, April 2, 2023. She was the daughter of the late J.C. Nave and Irene Cornett Morton Nave.

Joyce attended Boones Creek Christian Church. She was a loving mother and sister and worked at Texas Instruments for several years.

In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by five sisters, Louise Ingram, Iva Lee Beamer, Charlotte Street, Monnie Williams, and Marion Hulse; three brothers, Cecil Morton, James Leonard Morton and Charles Morton.

Joyce is survived by her only child, Monica Norman; her sisters, Carolyn Lyons (Lloyd) of Elizabethton, Ruth Lovelace (Terry) of Elizabethton, her twin brother, James Nave of Kingsport; her sister-in-law, Judy Morton and sister-in-law, Becky Morton; special niece, Carlena and many nieces and nephews also survive.

4816 JOHNSON CITY - Joyce Sue Dugger, age 78, of Johnson City, passed away on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Joyce was born in Carter County to the late Jett and Rosa Nell Ward Dugger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Virginia Wilson, Anna Pate and Laura Taylor; and two brothers, Jimmy Dugger and Clarence Dugger.

Joyce retired from Sycamore Shoals Hospital as a medical transcriptionist. She was a member of Zion Baptist Church and she loved sports, especially UT football and the Dallas Cowboys. Joyce also enjoyed spending time with her nieces and nephews.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sisters, Artha Loveless and Hannah Mae Whitehead; as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Joyce Sue Dugger will be conducted at 2:30 PM on Thursday, March 1, 2018 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with her great nephew, Joshua Pate, officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:30 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday.

4817 JOHNSON CITY - Juanita DeLoach Hicks, age 68, of Johnson City, Tennessee passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at her residence. Juanita was born in Carter County to the late JG DeLoach and Dorothy Nadine Ellis DeLoach. In addition to her parents, Juanita was also preceded in death by her daughter, Brandy Ann Hicks; her oldest brother, Burlus J. DeLoach and another brother, Kenneth M. DeLoach.
Juanita retired from Kennametal as a machinist and was a member of Grace Baptist Church of Jonson City.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, David M. Hicks, of the home; a sister, Dorothy F. Cooper (Dennis) of Athens, TN; a brother, Victor S. She was a native of Washington County and daughter of the late Carl and Nell Barnett Andes.

Judy enjoyed restoring antiques and giving them to folks in need. She loved animals especially her black lab, Easy, and her cat, Lucky.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late James & Cozette Loveless McKeehan. She was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. She was retired as a receiving manager at Wal-Mart, Johnson City after 27 years of service. Prior to that she was a beautician. Judy was a member of Zion Baptist Church but attended Little Mountain Baptist Church.

4821 JOHNSON CITY - Julia Elaine Woodby, 70, Johnson City, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at her home, following courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

Julia was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City. She was the only child of the late Carl E. and Sarah Pearl Peters Woodby.

Julia was a resident of the Dawn of Hope homes since 2009, and was very much loved by the staff and residents of the other homes.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Johnson City, and attended the Drive-In Church at University Parkway Baptist Church, Johnson City.

Her talents included jewelry making, crafts, latch hooking, and she loved cats of any kind, and had quite the collection of toy cats.

In addition to her parents, Julia was preceded in death by a special uncle, Howard Peters.

She is survived by several cousins, as well as a special housemate Kathy, former housemate Tammy, and very special friends Randy and Shannon.

The family wishes to thank the following staff at Dawn of Hope, C.O.O., Residential Director, the Chief Medical Officer, the lead staff and especially the direct support professionals, Becky and Janice, and all the others who worked with Julia through the years. They would also like to extend a very special thanks to Caris Healthcare for their help and support in the final days of her life.

Ms. Hilton was born on June 1, 1935, in Elizabethton, TN, to Paul and Ruby Hathaway Garland.

Ms. Hilton was a faithful Baptist, and she was the secretary at Eternal Life Church in Johnson City. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Hilton; and a brother, Stanley Garland.

She left behind to cherish her memory a daughter, Cynthia Cable; three sons, Randall Kent Hilton, Tony Parlier, and Kenny Hilton & daughter- in- law, Hazel Quintanna; two sisters, Linda Hilton and Kathy Spears; a brother, Bill Garland; A dear companion, James Fields; along with several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

June was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late Thomas and Hettie Sims Hoss. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Clifford Street; three sisters, Goldie Taylor, R.V. Shull and Barbara Snyder; and one brother, Tom Hoss.

June had worked as a head cashier at Wright's Supermarket and was a member of Milligan Freewill Baptist church, where she sang in the church choir. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and working outside in her flowers.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Stephen M. Street and wife Elizabeth, of Elizabethton; two grandsons, Lake Street and Kaden Street, both of Elizabethton; and one sister, Sue Lyons, of Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of June Pearl Street will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Sunday, April 29, 2018 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Mark Street, officiating. 4825 JOHNSON CITY - Kaitlyn Victoria Moody, age 26 peacefully went home to heaven after an extended battle with cancer December 4, 2022. She was a native of Washington County, TN. She was of the Baptist Faith and enjoyed watching Borderview Christian Church.

Katie loved her family and enjoyed watching scary movies with them. She was a warrior and never quit fighting until the Lord called her home.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County and was a daughter of the late Stacy and Anna Mae Phipps Elliott. Katherine was a charter and lifelong member of Greenwood Baptist Church. She retired from the V.A. Hospital where she had worked many years as an X-ray technician. Katherine’s first commitment in life was to the Lord. She was a charitable giver her entire life. Her second commitment was to her loving husband of 60 years. She loved her sisters, brothers and family and they LOVED her right back. Gardening was her favorite hobby, she loved working in her flowers. Also, they have a love of feeding stray animals and caring for their pets. Katherine loved traveling, dining out and she never met a stranger. She will be missed by anyone that ever met her. Kathy was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City. She was a daughter of Cleo H. Bailey Kelly and the late Lester H. Kelly.

Kathy was a 1973 graduate of Science High School. She enjoyed watching NASCAR, especially Dale Earnhardt. Kathy was a fun-loving, free spirited, kind, and gentle “hippy” at heart, which contributed to her nickname, “Chatty Kathy”. She loved her family and friends, and they will miss her deeply.

In addition to her father, Kathy was preceded in death by her husband, the love of her life, Billy Joe Lockner; maternal grandparents, George and Alice Bailey; paternal grandmother Mary Kate Kelly.

4828 JOHNSON CITY - Kathy Ann Ward McCloud McAmis, Johnson City, Tn., born June 25, 1955 passed away at her home on Saturday, September 9, 2017 after a brief illness.

Kathy was a daughter of the late Nathan D. Ward, Jr. & Julia Fenner Ward. She was born in Carter County, where she spent the rest of her life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her paternal Grandparents, N.D. & Sarah Tester Ward, her maternal grandparents: Arthur & Edith Parsons Fenner, several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Kathy was employed at Wal-Mart in Unicoi as department manager in health and beauty. She was a member of West Side Christian Church but had been attending North Ridge Community Church in Erwin. Kathy attended Elizabethton City Schools and graduated in 1973 from Elizabethton High School.

Those left to feel the loss, but rejoice in God's promise of being reunited again, are her sons: Lance McCloud, Johnson City, Scott & Claudia McCloud, Aurora, Illinois. Her granddaughter and light of her life, Hannah McCloud, Aurora, Illinois, her fiancé Danny Honaker, Johnson City, sister & brother-in-law: Beverly & Bryce McKinney and niece and husband, Brenna & Ashe Worthington, all of Elizabethton. Several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends also survive, along with her two beloved dogs, Jake & Allie.

A gathering for family and friends will be on Monday, September 11, 2017 at Memorial Funeral Chapel 212 N. Main Street, Elizabethton from 5 to 7 p.m. Private disposition will be held at a later date. 4829 JOHNSON CITY - Kenneth Wayne Emmert, 83, Johnson City, passed away Saturday, December 11, 2021, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.
Ken was born in Carter County to the late Joseph and Dimple Hopkins Emmert.
Ken proudly served in the US Air Force for four years. Ken worked as a boiler operator for the power plant at ETSU and retired from North American Rayon after 31 years. He was a member of the Dasheill Masonic Lodge #238 F&AM.
In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by: his wife, Peggy Perkins Emmert; and one sister, Joanne Marley.
Survivors include: two brothers, Bobby Emmert and his wife Elaine and Ronny Emmert; several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend and neighbor, Deborah Stewart.

4830 JOHNSON CITY - Kenneth Wayne “Wiener” Bowman, 80 of Johnson City passed away peacefully at Life Care of Elizabethton on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. Ken was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, March 24, 1942 to the late J. Frank and Dorothy Randolph Bowman. He graduated from Science Hill High School and retired from TPI. He attended Keystone Free Will Baptist Church. He grew up around baseball and his most enjoyable times were umpiring ballgames for several years. Most of the games he umpired were at Wing Deer Park in Johnson City. He was an Umpire-In-Chief for District 1 for Tennessee ASA. He enjoyed making people laugh and always had a joke to tell or a card trick to show. No matter what, he always had a smile on his face and never met a stranger. Sherrell Gage would say “Kenny was one heck of a nice guy, super good friend”.

In addition to his parents, Ken is preceded in death by his wife: Carolyn Bowman, three brothers: Ferrell Bowman, Charlie Bowman and Billy Joe Bowman. One Sister: Helen Arwood.

She was the daughter of the late Luther U. and Pearl E. Buckles of Elizabethton, TN. Chris was of the Baptist faith. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She left lots of love and lessons for us to hold on to.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Willard E. Vandeventer, of Johnson City TN, and her siblings, Clint, Bill, Juanita and Wilma Buckles, all four of Elizabethton, TN.

Chris is survived by her daughter, Gail Vandeventer of Richmond, VA, and her son, Greg Vandeventer of Olympia, WA; and her grandsons, Taylor and Scott Smart, both of Richmond VA, and Ray Vandeventer of Seattle WA.

He was born on April 23, 1937 in Elizabethton, Tennessee a son of the late Blaine Reynolds and Beulah Buckles Morrell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, Harry Reynolds.

Larry was a veteran of the United States Army. He was a truck driver for Mason Dixon Tank Lines and retired from Superior Carrier Tank Lines. He was a member of Marthina Memorial Chapel in Bristol, Tennessee.

He is survived by his wife, Glenna Reynolds; four children, David Jones and wife Tammy, of Meadowview, VA, Jennifer Scott and husband Keith, of Gray, TN, Mary Couch and husband Cummins, of Columbia, TN, and Cathy Essin and husband Matt, of Piney Flats, TN; five grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one sister, Karen Barnett and husband Danny, of Springboro, OH; one sister-in-law, Jean Reynolds, of Bluff City, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born on June 26, 1942, son of the late Fred Hyder, Jr. and Blanche Love Phillips Cecil. In addition to his parents, his beloved grandparents, Fred and Ethel Taylor Hyder preceded him in death.

Butch was a 1960 graduate of Happy Valley High School.

He retired from Raytheon and Alemite.

Butch was a member of the Watauga Lodge #622 F&AM.

He was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Butch enjoyed motorcycles, model airplanes, spending time with his family and fishing with his wife Mitzi.

4835 JOHNSON CITY - Larry M. “Bud” Presnell Sr., 83, of Johnson City, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2022. Larry was born on May 25, 1939 in Washington County. He was the son of the late Thomas and Eva Presnell. Larry is survived by his loving wife, Frances; son and wife, Larry Jr. and Debbie Presnell; daughter and husband, Lori and Chris Howard; granddaughter, April Presnell; grandson and his spouse, Cody and Hassie Howard; and sister-in-law, Rita Presnell. 4836 JOHNSON CITY - Larry Patrick "Pat" McQueen, 75, Johnson City, went to his eternal home with Jesus on Saturday morning, April 21, 2018, in the VA Community Living Center.

Pat was a 1961 graduate of Boones Creek High School. After attending ETSU, he joined the U.S. Navy to serve his country. After serving in the Navy, he returned to Johnson City and went to work at Eastman Chemical Company, where he was employed for 31 years until he retired in 1997.

Pat met the love of his life, Helen, and was married in June of 1968. Pat and Helen have resided in Boones Creek for the past 47 years.

Pat was a true servant to his family, friends, neighbors and church. Above all else, he loved Jesus and shared the gospel with many others. He was a member of Boone Trail Baptist Church for the past 44 years, where he served in various roles.

In addition to his father, James Monroe McQueen, Pat was preceded in death by: one brother, Kenneth McQueen; and step father, Ivan Hale.

Survivors include: his wife of almost 50 years, Helen Silver McQueen; son, Scott McQueen and his wife Ashley; daughter, Ashley McQueen Lamson and her husband Doug; his mother, Edith Saylor Hale; brother Ronnie "Porky" McQueen; sister, Sherry McQueen Wells; two grandchildren, Corey Lamson and his wife Emily, and Whitney Lamson; three great grandchildren, Aiden Riner, Zoey Riner, and Palmer Lamson; and many nieces and nephews.

The family of Pat McQueen will receive friends from 5 to 7 PM Wednesday, April 25th at Boone Trial Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 7 PM with Pastors Dwight Jenkins and Wayne Bledsoe officiating. The committal service will be conducted at 10:45 AM on Thursday, April 26th at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery. 4837 JOHNSON CITY - Laura Katherine Cadle, age 91, of Johnson City, TN, passed away on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at the NHC Healthcare of Johnson City. She was born in Bristol, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Andrew Oliver and Ida Rhymer Oliver. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Charles Henry Cadle; and one sister, Thelma Vance.

Mrs. Cadle attended East Unaka Christian Church. She loved to cook, work in flowers, and taking care of her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Marcia Cadle.

A Private Committal and Interment will be held in the Sermon on the Mount at Monte Vista Memorial Park.

4838 JOHNSON CITY - Lawrence Barnett, 84, of Johnson City, passed away on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

He was a native of Pigeon Roost, NC and son of the late Garther and Gertie Hughes Barnett.

In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by his five brothers, and his son-in-law, Frank Richards.

Lawrence attended Faith Free Will Baptist Church and Rich Acres Free Will Baptist Church. He loved spending time with his family especially riding his four wheeler. Lawrence was a supervisor in the manufacturing industry for several years before retiring.

4839 JOHNSON CITY - Lena Mae Holden Lewis, 91, Johnson City, passed away peacefully after a brief illness, surrounded by family, Wednesday, March 11, 2020, at her home. She was born in Elizabethton to the late Fred Frazier and Gertrude Loveless Holden. Lena was in food service and worked in school cafeteria’s serving food to students, which she loved very much. She was member of Bethel Church of Christ. Lena loved to travel with her family, especially to Dollywood and Disney World. She was always ready to jump in the car and go. Lena loved bringing her family together on Sundays with her wonderful cooking. Lena never complained and her family thought that was a very special and caring trait that she had.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Henry Lewis, Jr.; brothers, Coolidge Calvin Holden, Ralph Holden, Billy Joe Holden, James Delman Holden.

4840 JOHNSON CITY - Leslie John Earp, Sr., age 74, of Johnson City, Tennessee, gained his wings on January 27, 2023, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

A lifelong resident of Johnson City, Leslie was born December 20, 1948, to the late Howard William Earp and Clara Ruth Arnold Earp. He graduated from Science Hill High School. In 1968, he married his childhood friend and the love of his life, Cheryl Norris.

Leslie was a member of University Parkway Baptist Church.

Leslie loved anything that had to do with cars or a motor. He was a skilled mechanic who repaired lawn mowers and vehicles. He also enjoyed NASCAR and he liked to put together model cars.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Earl Earp, Sr.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 54 years, Cheryl; his children, Leslie John Earp Jr., Kimberly Willis, and Rebecca Bennett; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Bonnie Huffman; and several nieces and nephews.

4841 JOHNSON CITY - Lieutenant Colonel Laura E. Fulkerson, US Army, Ret., 88, of Johnson City, departed this life on Thursday, April 19, 2018 at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

She was born in Hawkins County on July 26, 1929 and was the fifth child to the late Tom and Cornelia Fulkerson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Laura graduated from Swift Memorial Junior College in 1951 and from Freedman's School of Nursing at Howard University in 1955. She worked in public health nursing after graduation and later joined the US Air Force, from which she was sent to the Philippine Islands, and later retired after twenty-three years from the US Army as a Lieutenant Colonel after the Vietnam era. She was also a charter member of Women's Memorial in Washington D.C.

Laura was a member of AME Zion Church where she served as a deaconess, secretary of the Sunday school, Willing Workers Club, Women's Service Club, and senior choir and enjoyed working with them as long as she was able to do so.

Those left to cherish Laura's memory include: sisters, Hazel Miller and Ellen Jenkins; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will gather to receive friends on Monday, April 23, 2018 from 12:00 PM until a celebration of life service beginning at 1:00 PM at Tetrick Funeral & Cremation Services, Johnson City with Rev. Charles Hawkins officiating. Following the service, a committal and interment will be held at Mountain Home National Cemetery at 2:30 PM.

She was a native of Johnson City and the last surviving child of Sam W. and Nora Fletcher Jones. Lillian retired from Levi Strauss and was a member of Heritage Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by 6 brothers, 7 sisters, and 1 great-grandchild. Survivors include 4 sons, Phillip Mitchell & wife Karen of Bluffton, SC, Harvey Mitchell & wife Barbara of Jonesborough, Donald Mitchell & wife Marie of Johnson City & Ronald Mitchell & wife Janet of Johnson City; 1 daughter Phyllis Hackworth & husband John, Goodview, VA; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren with one expected in November; and several nieces & nephews.

The funeral service for Lillian Mitchell will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. John Hackworth, Jr. officiating. 4843 JOHNSON CITY - Lillian Ruth Cox Babb, age 80, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, March 7, 2023. Lillian was the matriarch of her family. She married Reverend Claude Babb in 1963, having recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. Together they raised four children, Theresa Litz (Raymond), Deborah McCarn, Timothy Babb and Eugene Babb (Nikki).

Lillian was the daughter of the late Eugene and Bonnie Cox. She was predeceased by her brothers Donald Cox, Eddie Cox, and grandson-in-law Gregory Glazier.

Lillian was a great friend, a shoulder to cry on, a talented seamstress, a cancer survivor, and an inspiration to all that knew her. However, most would call her "Home". She had the loving embrace and warmth that embodied what "Home" meant to so many. Lillian's faith was strong enough to move mountains. She was a dedicated member and Pastor's wife of Clifton View Baptist Church. The family is at peace knowing that she has returned to her heavenly home.

She is survived by her husband and children, brother Gary Cox, sister Brenda (Sonny) Treadway; grandchildren Shannon Glazier, Amanda Testa, Emily Lee, Brandon McCarn, Kirsten Litz; great-grandchildren Austin, Abbigail, Liam, Ava, Reagan; and her beloved dog Presley.

A graveside service will take place at 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 11, 2023, Monte Vista Memorial Park with Dr. Michael Oaks officiating. Please meet at the cemetery by 1:50 pm. She lived in Erwin for thirty-nine years before moving to Johnson City. Linda is a daughter of the late Herman and Lucy Tolley Couch. She was a homemaker and a member of Unity Fellowship Church.

Other than her parents she was preceded in death by two brothers: Floyd and J. R. Couch; two sisters: Vada Ruth Williams and Verda Jane Couch.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories, her husband of thirty-three years, Billy Jack Harrell; one daughter, Sally Chandler and husband, Gary Booher, Watauga; one brother, Ketron Couch, Erwin; one sister, Cathy Brawshaw, Piney Flats; brother-in-law, Bob Williams; sister-in-law, Betty Jean Arrowood, both of Johnson City; several nieces and nephews; her fur companion, Emma Rose.

4845 JOHNSON CITY - Lisa Nell Williams Morrison, age 65, Johnson City, formerly of Erwin, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, March 05, 2023, at her residence. She is a daughter of the late Reverend Arvil Williams and Fredna Higgins Williams. Lisa lived most of her life in Unicoi County before moving to Johnson City.

She retired from NN Ball and Roller after several years of service. Lisa attended Southside Freewill Baptist Church. She loved going to the beach every year on family vacations. Lisa had a loving and generous heart and she was cherished by all her family and friends. She adored her #1, Josh and her granddaughters. Lisa enjoyed spending time with all her family and eating her special steaks.

In addition to her parents, Lisa was preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Chuck” Morrison.

4846 JOHNSON CITY - Lois Marie Arnett, affectionately known as LoLo by those closest to her, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away at the age of 84, on March 6, 2023.

She was the daughter of the late W.A. and Marie Blevins Arnett. She graduated from Science Hill High School in 1958. She enjoyed catching up with everyone at the reunions throughout the years. Her favorite things to do were going on trips with her family to Boston, MA, Myrtle Beach, and to Atlanta to watch her favorite team, the Braves.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Thomas, Frank, Marvin, and Don; three sisters, Edna, Margaret, and Barbara; and a niece, Carolyn Wells. She is survived by one sister, Phyllis Saylor (Roy) of Jonesborough, TN and numerous nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

4848 JOHNSON CITY - Lorna R. Wilson, Johnson City, went home to be with her Lord on Saturday, March 18, 2023.

Lorna was born on January 1, 1930 to Smith and Pearl Carter Davenport, in Elizabethton. She was a member of Cash Hollow Presbyterian Church and retired from Leon Fernbach. She was a loving wife and mother.

In addition to her parents, Lorna was preceded in death by: her beloved husband, Dan Wilson; three sons, George, Tom and Danny Wilson; one daughter, Cindy Arnold; five brothers, George, Ferris, Leroy, Maynard and Donnie Davenport; and two sisters, Cathy Deal and Mary Boggs.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory: two daughters, Connie Wilson (Keith) and Kathy Moody; 15 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; one sister, Liddie Lewis; one brother, Smith Davenport, Jr; and several nieces and nephews.

4850 JOHNSON CITY - Louis Allen “Dickie” Hamilton, age 71, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, January 27, 2020 at NHC of Johnson City. He was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, a son of the late Robert E. and Ruth Vest Hamilton.

Dickie was a star athlete at Boones Creek High School class of 1968. He was known for his excellent basketball skills and played the guard position. Dickie was selected to play on the varsity team in his 8th grade year of school. He also played on the baseball team as the pitcher. He was of the Presbyterian faith, and had worked for the Johnson City Power Board and Pepsi. He loved watching University of Tennessee Basketball and Little League World Series games.

He is survived by two brothers, Bobby Jack Hamilton and wife Brenda, and Charles W. Hamilton and wife Shirley; three sisters, Betty Walker, Carolyn Miller, and Judy Kilinsky and husband James; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 30, 2020 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at Monte Vista Funeral Home. Funeral Service will follow with Evangelist Toonie Cash officiating.
