4751 JOHNSON CITY - Helen Brummett Alford, 86, Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord and join her husband Billy Saturday, December 30, 2017, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Alford was a Unicoi County native, but had lived most of her life in Johnson City.

She was a daughter of the late Sam and Nancy Tolley Brummett.

Mrs. Alford worked in the textile industry, first with Leon-Ferenbach and later retiring from Bemberg. Following retirement she worked as a cashier at The Meat Shop.

Mrs. Alford was a member of Southwestern Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Alford in 2012, four brothers, Ernest and Robert Hardin, Bill and Wayne Brummett, two sisters, Virgie McLaughlin and Lena Bales.

Mrs. Alford is survived by her daughter, Nancy "Lannie" Alford Watts and husband Keith, Telford; her grandson, Justin Levi Watts, Johnson City; three brothers, Paul Brummett, Cleveland, OH, Ted Brummett and wife Jean, Akron, OH, Raymond Brummett and wife Clara, Unicoi; one sister, June Powers and husband Page, Unicoi; a sister-in-law, Wanda Brummett, Unicoi; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Steve Webb, Dr. Hamati, Dr. Garcia, and the nurses and staff of the 2nd floor of the Johnson City Medical Center, for the excellent care.

The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at 7:00 P.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Rev. Greg Salyer, officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5:30- 7:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.

The committal service and entombment will be held Wednesday at 12:00 noon in the Mausoleum of Roselawn Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

4752 JOHNSON CITY - Helen Bryant, 92, of Johnson City, TN, gained her angel wings and went to be with Jesus on Monday, January 30, 2023, at Agape with her granddaughter and several special friends by her side.

Helen was born September 24, 1930 in Jonesborough, TN to the late Maggie Croyle Murr.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband Leeroy Bryant, son Stephen Bryant, great-granddaughter Madison Fay Reed, sister Edith Sauls, and brothers Robert Murr and Cecil Murr.

Survivors include a special granddaughter, Katie Reed, and her husband Justin who was also a very dear friend to Helen. Grandson David Bryant, Great-Grandson, Jackson Reed; several nieces and nephews, and special friends who helped her through the good times and bad; Moe Sawyer, Vinette Crowder, Linda and Mike Lampkins, Penny Merritt, Marie and Nick Caris, and her very dear neighbors.

Helen grew up in McCarty Methodist Church in Telford, TN. She enjoyed going to church with her grandparents at an early age. She was a member of Clark Street Baptist Church.

Helen worked at Peoples Drug Store in the 1950s and retired from Texas Instruments in 1991 after 17 years of service.

She loved to work in her flower beds, plant gardens, to cook, and she cherished fellowshipping and spreading her love of Jesus with others.

Helen’s family would like to thank Dr. Mary Jane Gibson, Dr. Frank Johnson, Sarah McRae, NP, Mikella Maine, NP, SoFHA Hospitalist, Kim Jackson, Agape, and Amedysis for the care they provided to her.

A graveside service to honor and remember Helen will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Monday, February 6, 2023, at Roselawn Cemetery.

4753 JOHNSON CITY - Helen Graybeal Price, 95, Johnson City, died Sunday, January 22, 2017, at Mountain City Care Center.

Mrs. Price was a native of Mountain City and had been a resident of Johnson City for most of her life.

She was the daughter of the late George and Anna Wilson Graybeal.

Mrs. Price received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Milligan College in 1943. Upon graduation, she joined the U.S. Army Women's Corp during World War II, where she was a Medical Lab Technician at Ft. McClellan, AL, working with German P.O.W.'s. Following her military service, Mrs. Price attended Duke University and later received her Master of Science degree in Biology from East Tennessee State University.

She retired in 1973 from the Veterans Affairs Hospital, Mountain Home, after twenty-three years of service as a Medical Technologist. Following her retirement, she worked with the Johnson City School System at Liberty Bell Middle School, then returned to medical technology, working at Northside Hospital, then finally teaching medical assistance at Steed College and Bristol College.

Mrs. Price's active church life was always the foundation in her life, first as a child growing up at First Christian Church in Mountain City, then her membership at First Presbyterian Church, Johnson City, then as a charter member of Cornerstone Church.

She was an active member of the Johnson County Historical Society, the Unaka Rock and Mineral Society, and enjoyed working with Genealogy.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Price was preceded in death by her husband, Bill W. Price, in 1986, and two brothers, James and Hal Graybeal.

She is survived by her children, James Hal Price, Johnson City, Julie Price Elliott and husband Ernie, Los Alamos, NM; three grandchildren, Bethany Elliott, Knoxville, William Elliott, Alcoa, and Nathan Elliott, Fayetteville, NC; three nieces.

The memorial service for Mrs. Price will be held Wednesday, January 25, 2017, at 2:00 P.M., at Cornerstone Church, with Pastor Jason Myers, officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service Wednesday from 1:00-2:00 P.M. at the church.

4754 JOHNSON CITY - Helen Hoss Hughes, age 90, of Johnson City, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Helen was born to the late James Garfield Hoss and Myrtle Crumley Hoss and grew up in the Shell Creek Community of Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Hughes; her eldest daughter, Sandra Jean May; two brothers, Carl Hoss and Paul Hoss; and five sisters, Lillian Ellis, Ruth Lewis, Mae Winters, Edith Jones and Margaret Buck.

Helen graduated from Cloudland High School in 1945, where she was a stand out on the girls' basketball team. Her love for basketball led her to become a life-long fan of Tennessee Vols Basketball. After marrying her late husband, Clyde Hughes the couple lived several years in the Cove Creek Community before moving to Johnson City in 1960. Helen was employed by Tri State Container Corporation for several years and retired as an inspector for Kennametal and was a long standing member of King Springs Church of Christ.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, James Hughes and wife Shirley, of Elizabethton and Tommy Hughes and wife Holly, of Blountville; one daughter, Penny Townsend, of Jonesborough; five grandsons; three granddaughters; twelve great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; one step grandchild; three step great grandchildren; two sisters, Ellen Hughes, of Roan Mountain and Lydia Shipley, of Bluff City; a special friend, Angela Moore; a special niece, Pam Sells; and three special nephews, Randy Ellis, Sonny Ellis and Wade Heaton.

A service to honor the life of Helen Hoss Hughes will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Sunday, December 2, 2018 in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Jon Ruetz, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Sunday; or at the residence of her daughter at other times.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 3, 2018 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Joe May, Jeremy May, Clinton Hughes, Lucas Hughes, Michael Townsend and Bailey Sheffield. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Carter, Norman Simerly, Michael Bennett and Mike Hubbard.

4755 JOHNSON CITY - Helen Kate Mitchell Saylor, age 94, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, August 16, 2019, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

She was a daughter of the late Charles Mitchell Sr. and Kate S. Hawk Mitchell, born to them on November 3, 1924, in Greeneville, Tennessee.

She united in marriage to Walter E. Saylor and to this union two daughters were born. Helen was a devoted wife, mother and doting grandmother, who was selfless in nature. Aside from the great love she had for her family, she was an immaculate housekeeper and took great pride in caring for her family. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City where she volunteered in the kitchen for the Wednesday Nighters and was a dedicated member of the Susannah Wesley Class and later, the Frank Settle Scripture Study Class. Earlier in life, she operated Saylor's Grocery in the Austin Springs community.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of nearly 54 years, Walter E. Saylor; Brothers: Charles Mitchell Jr. and Fred Mitchell; Sister: Evelyn M. Trammell and a son-in-law; Donald J. Boarman.

She is survived by her loving daughters: Dianna Boarman and Deborah Saylor; two grandchildren: Jennifer Boarman and Alexander Boarman. She is also survived by a host of many other relatives and friends left behind to cherish her memory.

Funeral Services for Helen Kate Mitchell Saylor will be conducted on Tuesday, August 20, 2019, at 1:00 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City, 900 Spring Street, Johnson City, Tennessee 37604, with Rev. Jodie Ihfe officiating.

Burial will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park.

4756 JOHNSON CITY - Helen Ruth Simerly Smith, 82, Johnson City, died Thursday, October 20, 2016, at Agape Nursing & Rehab Center, Johnson City.
Mrs. Smith was a native of Johnson City and lived in Dallas, TX from 1952 until returning to Johnson City in 1999.
She was a daughter of the late John and Ethel Woodby Simerly.
Mrs. Smith retired in 1991 after twenty-one years of service with Sun Oil Co., Dallas, where she worked as a data processor in the accounting department.
She was a member of Locust Street Church of Christ, and enjoyed reading.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by three brothers, Gordon, Donald and Ernest Simerly.
She is survived by her husband of more than sixty-six years, Billy Jack Smith; three children, Richard A. Smith and wife Sara, Castle Rock, CO, Jeffery L. Smith and wife Cindie, Peoria, AZ, and Patricia A. Smith Dickerson and husband Blair, Richmond, VA; one sister, Phyllis Kitzmiller, Monroe, NC; ten grandchildren, Tincy Crocker and husband Billy, Mabank, TX, Kristi Phillips, Eustace, TX, Jennifer Lugo, Dennison, TX, Nichollis Smith, Ft. 4757 JOHNSON CITY - Helen Theresa Wilson, 95, of Johnson City died Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at NHC of Johnson City.

She was a native of New Orleans, Louisiana, daughter of the late Robert E. and Lillie Swift Nunez.

Helen was a 1942 graduate of Science Hill High School, ETSU and held a Master's Degree from the University of Delaware. She was a retired educator.

She was of the Catholic faith.

In addition to her parents, her husband, Leland Craig Wilson; a son, Craig Robert Wilson; a daughter, Karen Theresa Sietz; three sisters, Dorothy Ruth Hogan, Lillian N. Holmes and Betty Louise Perry all preceded her in death.

Survivors include; her grandson, Craig Leland Wilson and three other grandchildren, Mark Robert Wilson, Tonya Helen Wilson and Trey Nunez Wilson; several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service is scheduled for Friday, August 17, 2018 in the mausoleum chapel at Monte Vista Memorial Park at 11:00 am. Entombment is to follow the service.

4758 JOHNSON CITY - Helen Wilson Mitchell Leach, age 92, Johnson City, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 22, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

She was a native of Yancey County, NC and lived most of her life in Texarkana, TX. Helen is a daughter of the late Walsey A. Wilson and Bessie Mae Williams Wilson.

She was of the Christian Faith. Helen worked as a Registered Nurse for many years before her retirement.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Christine Brackins Anclar; three brothers: Harvey Columbus Wilson, Jack V. Wilson and W.A. Wilson; three sisters: Sally Mae Carlson, Alice Ruth Palmer and Ferne Pence.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories, one son, Steve Mitchell, Greensboro, NC; two sisters: Maxine Phillippi, Johnson City and Mildred Virginia Lyle, Columbia, SC; several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be held at 2:30 P.M. on Saturday, December 28, 2019 in the Evergreen Mausoleum. Minister Ken Lytton will officiate.

4759 JOHNSON CITY - Herbert H. Matherly, 88, of Johnson City, passed away Thursday, April 13, 2017. He was born in Butler, Tennessee, and grew up in Carter County. He was the son of George Dewey Matherly and Ruth Esther Long. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Herbert Matherly, Jr., in December 2016.

In 1949 he started working for Pet Dairy. In 1950 he organized the Pet Dairy Credit Union, starting with a $5 deposit, which grew into a multi-million dollar credit union at the time of his retirement in 1994. His philosophy was people helping people. He dedicated his life to the prosperity of his credit union members and making a difference in the quality of countless people's lives.

For many years he was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon and Sunday School class president.

He was a devoted family man. He leaves behind his loving wife, Jean, of 68 years; two daughters, Jennifer Lynn of Kingsport and Laura Lee of United Arab Emirates; and two granddaughters, Angela and Emily.

Graveside services will be held at a later date.

4760 JOHNSON CITY - Houston “Beau” Alford, 75, Johnson City, passed away, Thursday, May 13, 2021, with his family by his side, followed by a brief illness.

Beau was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City. He was a son of the late William “Bill” and Alice O’Veda Pearce Alford.

Beau attended Freewill Baptist Church. He had the gift of music, being an incredible musician and vocalist, playing in: “The Bob Lewis Band” and “The Brother Buford Band.” He loved listening to old records like Elvis, and playing his keyboard. Beau was also a wonderful cook, known for his beef stew. When his children were young his house was always the place to come for dinner time. Everyone enjoyed his music, cooking, quick wit and humor.

Beau adored his family which included 5 children and 8 grandchildren. He always said, “Nothing was more important than family.” His family will honor this loving sentiment by continuing to gather even after moving in different directions.

In addition to his parents, Beau was preceded in death by his siblings, Billy Alford, Betty Hyder and Judy Keene.

Those left to carry on his legacy are his amazing children, Amy Alford Taylor (Chris) of Murfreesboro, John Seehorn (Misty) of Johnson City, Kasey Alford Thomas (Terry) of Lexington, KY, Jessica Alford Haynes (Scott Kologiski) of St. Petersburg, FL, Beau Alford (Kristen) of Nashville; grandchildren, Will, Riley, Marlee, Bodhi, Anne-Marie, Clara, Andrew, and Banks; sisters, Coby Ingram of Johnson City, Teresa Piercy of Chucky; he was adored as an uncle, cousin and friend.

The family will gather for a graveside service at 10:00 a.m. in Monte Vista Memorial Park, with Pastor Kenneth Grindstaff, officiating. Those who wish to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery by 9:50 a.m.

The funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home.

4761 JOHNSON CITY - Howard Ruben Peters, age 90, of Johnson City, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2017 at his home.

He was a native of Johnson City, and the last survivor of his parents, Charles P. and Edna Holden Peters. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Inez, Mary, Celia, Ruby, Dovie, Pearl, Edna, and Charles, Jr.

He attended Science Hill High School, and proudly served in the U.S. Army in World War II and the Korean War.

He worked as an electronic technician for the Department of the Navy in Washington D.C., and retired from General Electric in Lynchburg, VA.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the James H. Quillen V.A Medical Center and the staff of Amedysis Hospice.

The graveside service will be conducted at 10:45 A.M. Friday, October 13, 2017 at the Mountain Home National Cemetery with the V.A Chaplain officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

4762 JOHNSON CITY - Imogene Gentry, age 89, of Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at the Johnson City Medical Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Leota Blackburn Wilson. Mrs. Gentry was a member of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church, and was a seamstress. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, and she loved her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gentry was preceded in death by her husband, Guy Gentry, Sr. in February 2007; a son, Larry Willis; daughter, Linda Crowe; brother, Charles Wilson, Jr.; sisters, Sue Blevins, Nell Hudson, and Ruth Walters.

Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Light, Gray, Betty Bouton, Johnson City; son, Guy Gentry, Jr., Gray; seven grandchildren, Michael Young, Mark Young, Jason Richardson, Shawn Light, Jeremy Crowe, Jonathan Gentry, and Deila Taylor; nine great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mrs. Gentry will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, March 2, 2017 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Dr. Gene Lasley and Pastor Jody Jenkins officiating.

The family will receive friends Thursday from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home. The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Friday, March 3 at 11:00 A.M. from Monte Vista Memorial Park.

4763 JOHNSON CITY - Ina M. Bowers Soto, 88, of Johnson City, Tennessee, died Monday, October 31, 2022, at NHC Healthcare.

Ina was born in Charity Hill, Tennessee, the daughter of William C. Bowers and Lola M. Carriger Bowers.

Growing up, Ina attended Siam Baptist Church and after graduating from Elizabethton High School, she left the homeplace for the Washington, D.C. area where she met her husband while working at the National Rifle Association. Ina raised her family in Kensington, Maryland. She and her husband retired to Lighthouse Point, Florida in 1984 to enjoy the beach. Ina returned to the mountains of Tennessee that she loved in 2010, where her husband, George B. Soto Jr., of 50 years preceded her in death.

Ina was an avid gardener, she enjoyed watching her backyard birds, the National Zoo Panda Cam, “Bonanza” reruns, and spending time with her daughters, (and feeding stray cat “Miss Kitty”). She also loved books, music and art of all kinds.

In addition to her husband, Ina is preceded in death by her sister, Pearl Ayers; brothers, Ray and Floyd Bowers; nephew, Larry Bowers; and niece Barbara Ayers.

Ina is survived by her twin daughters, Deborah Lee Meyer and Dianna Lynne Tucker, and her daughter, Christina Rachel Soto (Rex Whitfield); granddaughter, March Lea Gooding (Owen Bell); grandson, Jesse Dean Meyer (Louise); and great grandson, Jeremy Lee Bell.

4764 JOHNSON CITY - Irene Chase Bryant, 81, Johnson City, died peacefully on Friday, July 29, 2016, at the residence of a daughter, Dianna McMackin.

Irene was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Orris O. and Alta Moody Chase, but was raised by her Aunt Verta and her cousin Ruth Johnson. She was a 1953 graduate of Science Hill High School. Irene was very proud of her volunteer work during high school, volunteering as a candy striper at the Johnson City Memorial Hospital. She was a homemaker, and a loving wife and mother. Irene had a special love for animals, and found so much joy in feeding the birds, squirrels and neighbors pets.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Edward L. Bryant, in 2013; a daughter, Donna Bryant Painter; a grandson, F. Lane Proffitt, III; and a brother.

Irene is survived by two daughters, Debra Bryant Shipley and husband Burl, Johnson City, Dianna Bryant McMackin, Johnson City; five grandchildren, Dustin Proffitt, Andrea Proffitt Moore, Wesley Smith, Erica P. Wright and husband Jordan, all of Johnson City, and Christopher McMackin, Knoxville; two great-grandchildren, Skyler McMackin, Elizabethton, and Gracie May Wright, Johnson City; one niece, Camille Bryant Jones, Arizona; one nephew, Buddy Jack Bryant, South Carolina; her lifelong friends, Doris Hale and Barbara Cole.

The graveside funeral service will be held Sunday, July 31, 2016, at 3:00 PM, in Monte Vista Memorial Park, with Pastor Rick Powell, officiating. Active pallbearers will be Burl Shipley, Dustin Proffitt, Wesley Smith, Christopher McMackin and Jordan Wright. Honorary pallbearers will be Buddy Jack Bryant and Jack Shipley. Those planning to attend are requested to meet at the cemetery by 2:50 PM on Sunday.

4765 JOHNSON CITY - It is with great sadness that the family of Mallie "Kathleen" Mann, of Johnson City, announces her passing on Monday, February 11, 2019, at the age of 99 years.

Kathleen will be lovingly remembered by her children, Barbara Shaw of Lonsdale, MN, and Linda Maness and Deborah Mann of Kingsport, TN. She will also be fondly remembered by her sisters of Morristown, TN, Violet Reynolds and Helen Hoffer, twelve grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren.

Kathleen was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Lonnie Mann. She was also predeceased by her children, James Lonnie, Jr, and Mary Anne Mann.

Kathleen retired from Sears in 1985, after 22 years of service. Known by many as, "Granny," she was a spunky woman who spoke her mind and stood her ground. She will be missed.

A celebration of Kathleen's life will be held from 2:00-4:00 pm on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home.

4766 JOHNSON CITY - J.N. Buckles, age 94, of Johnson City, Tennessee went home to be the Lord on Thursday, October 24, 2019 from Agape Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.


J.N. was born in Carter County, Tennessee to the late Alfred and Abbygail Nave Buckles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Lee Nave Buckles; his brothers, Harry Buckles, Eston Buckles, Tommy Buckles and Brown Buckles; and his sisters, Vera Buckles, Ella Buckles and Kate Buckles Williams.

J.N. retired as a Lieutenant with the Tennessee State Police, following 33 years of service. He was a private man and very dedicated to Public Service. J.N. was of the Baptist faith and was a United States Marine veteran, having served during World War II. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Johnson City Masonic Lodge No. 486. J.N. was a member of York Rite of Johnson City and of the Scottish Rite, of Knoxville and was a founding member of Jericho Shrine, member of National Troopers Association and a member of Tennessee Retired Officers Association. He also enjoyed watching U.T. games and growing up on the family farm.

4767 JOHNSON CITY - Jack C. “Papaw” Eller, 95, of Johnson City, TN went to meet his Lord and Savior on May 28, 2023. He was born October 1, 1927, in Johnson County, TN, the youngest son of the late Jesse Franklin and Eliza Patrick Eller.

In 1947, his family moved from Johnson County to Carter County where he met his one true love, June Sanders. They married on June 16, 1950, and were married over 72 years at the time of his passing.

Papaw was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army having served in Japan during the Korean Conflict.

He retired as Johnson City distribution plant manager of Pet Dairy in 1992 after 28 years of service. Papaw Jack began his work there as a home service delivery milk man where his honesty, integrity and friendship earned him the trust of his many loyal customers, some of whom gave him keys to there home so he could put their milk in the refrigerator.

Papaw was a dedicated Christian and a member of Southwestern Baptist Church where he was an active member of the Homer Price Sunday School class and served as a past Deacon at Cedar Grove Baptist Church. He also served on the Board of Directors of West Carter County Fire Dept. for several years.

Papaw Jack was a loving, caring and generous husband, father, grandfather and friend. Two of his greatest assets were his work ethic and his understanding of what he called “CS", (common sense).

Before retiring he helped a great deal with the care of his parents.

In addition, he and Mamaw also cared for his mother-in-law who lived in their home until her passing.

After retiring, his biggest pleasure was caring for his lawn and his garden. Papaw grew a great deal of vegetables, especially tomatoes and loved to share them with his friends and neighbors.

He and Mamaw also spent countless hours caring for three of his older sisters and an older brother in their later years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by all his siblings, sisters, Ruth Clarke, Olive Humphreys, Kate Shupe, and Maurene Robinson; brothers, Bruce, Fred, Howard, Ray and infant brother, Frank Eller.

Jack was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of Otterbein United Methodist Church. Jack retired as a Division Manager of Advance Automotive. He volunteered as a coach in the Pony League Softball in Bristol and was active in the Boy Scouts.

He was a native of Banner Elk, NC and was the son of the late Conley and Bessie Lee Ward Presnell. Jack retired from Empire Furniture Company and attended Johnson City Baptist Temple. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served is country during the Vietnam War. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Jason Presnell.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Presnell; three children, Jeff Presnell and wife, Elizabeth of Kingsport, Janet Presnell and Justin Presnell both of the home. 4771 JOHNSON CITY - Jack Rumbley Dempsey, 86, of Johnson City, passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, at Franklin Woods Community Hospital.

Mr. Dempsey was born in Elizabethton, a son of the late William "Bill" and Viola Rumbley Dempsey.
Mr. Dempsey graduated from Mary Hughes High School in 1953, before going on to serve in the National Guard and the U. S. Army. Afterward he worked and retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad with 43 years of service.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Piney Flats for over 50 years. Mr. Dempsey was also a member of East Unaka Christian Church, servicing as assistant Sunday School superintendent, president of win a couples class, deacon, and elder. He enjoyed camping, NASCAR, and model railroading.
Mr. Dempsey is preceded in death by: one sister, Berniece Tipton; and two brothers, Guy Dempsey and Verlin Dempsey.

She was a daughter of the late William and Beryl Buckles Taylor.

Jackie was a skilled homemaker who enjoyed family gatherings, cooking, gardening, reading her Bible, and watching girls softball – especially the Lady Vols. Her unwavering faith in God, strong will, and joyful sense of humor provided comfort and strength to loved ones as they watched her go through many serious health issues. She would always say, “It’s going to be alright”.

In addition to her parents, Jackie was preceded in death by brothers Jerry and Mike Taylor; and grandson Charles Wise. She is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Charles “C.W.” Winters; children, Barbara Taylor (Terry), Wayne Winters, Terry Winters (Delores Trent), and Pam Weaver (Tommy); siblings, Charles Taylor (Teresa), Jean Langeroudi, and Cindi Taylor; grandchildren, Devon Winters, April Winters, Sheyenne Weaver, and Kendra Keylon; great-great-granddaughter, Rosa Paredes; several nieces and nephews.

David was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, a son of the late Paul Osborne and Mary Collins Osborne. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Wayne Osborne.

David had lived his whole life in Johnson City and attended Science Hill High School and graduated from Happy Valley High School. He worked as a stagehand for local venues in Tennessee and North Carolina before his retirement. He enjoyed watching the Vols, Titans, and Minnesota Vikings football. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, and being outdoors. He was of the Baptist faith and was one who really loved Christmas time. He was a kind and sweet man and friend to all.

His is survived by his wife of 19 years, Tonette Poarch Osborne; one sister, Brenda Stout; one brother, Bill Osborne; one aunt, Polly Collins; his mother-in-law, Maxine Poarch; brother and sister-in-law, Chuck Poarch and wife Lisa; two nieces; one nephew; and several great nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends. He is also survived by his fur babies Prissy his baby Chichewa, three cats Boo, Baby and Lil Bit.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County and was a son of the late John and Mary Ann Presnell Ward. Mr. Ward was a member of the Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ. He had been a salesman most of his life. Mr. Ward was an avid reader and craftsman, and loved to read his bible and loved to attend church and gospel singing.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jo Johnson Ward in 2005; a son, Farlen Dale Ward; five brothers, Clifton, Howard, Garfield, Dewey and Casey Ward; four sisters, Martha Ward, Mary Alice Hammitt, Evie Presnell and Bessie Lee Presnell.

4776 JOHNSON CITY - James G. Burleson, 86, Johnson City, died Friday, December 30, 2016, following a lengthy illness.

Jim was a native of Mitchell County, NC, a former resident of Elizabethton, and had been a resident of Johnson City since 1959.

He was a son of the late Oscar and Bertha Forbes Burleson.

Jim was a 1948 graduate of Happy Valley High School, then received a bachelor degree from Steed College. Later he attended Northwestern University, Chicago, IL, where he received additional specialized training for his career in banking.

Jim was a Senior Vice-President and Trust Officer, retiring from First Tennessee Bank following a long career in local banking.

He was a member of Boones Creek Bible Church, and a former member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school and served as a trustee.

Jim formerly served on the Board of Directors of Milligan College, and was an active member of the Nativic Civitan Club.

He was an artist, and enjoyed painting oils, acrylic and water colors.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a grandson, Joshua Grant Ramsey, three brothers, Clarence, Howard and Lee Burleson, and a sister, Thelma Burleson Sparks.

The funeral service will be conducted Thursday, January 5, 2017, at 2:00 P.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Pastor Dale Cunningham, officiating. Special music will be provided by Lee Ann Davis.

4777 JOHNSON CITY - James “Cecil” Green, 84, of Johnson City, died January 6, 2023 in the care of Amedisys Hospice Care at Lakebridge Healthcare, Johnson City.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City and the son of the late James Eugene and Mary Alice Green.

Cecil was a graduate of Science Hill High School and Georgia Tech, where he received a degree in Civil Engineering with honors and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Corps of Engineers.

Cecil was the Chairman of the Board of J.E. Green Company and a past president of the Tennessee State Branch, Associated General Contractors of America, and the Associated General Contractors Tri-Cities Branch. He also served on the board of directors of Hamilton Bank, in the Construction Division of the United Way campaign, and as a trustee of Washington College Academy.

He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, Johnson City.

Cecil was also a member of the Johnson City Rotary Club and the Hurstleigh Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ida Lois Green.

Survivors include: his wife, Sandra Graf Green; sons, James F. (Lisa) Green, Stephen Lawrence Green, and John David (Amy) Green; daughter, Mary Catharine (Greg) McMullen; sister, Katie (Ernest) Walker; and seven grandchildren, Taylor (Maggie) and Bailey (Niki) Green, Natalie (Daniel) Woodall, Oscar, Anna Catharine, and Aidan McMullen, and Peter Green; nephews Charles Wilson and Ernest E. Walker, and niece Leanne Walker Cox.

4778 JOHNSON CITY - Jana “A” Lisa Oxidine Buck of Johnson City, was called to her Heavenly home on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at the age of 65. Jana was a devoted wife to her husband, Mike, of 34 years.
Jana was a lifelong resident of Johnson City, Tennessee. She was a daughter of the late Robert and Marie Oxidine. She retired from the Veterans Administration after 31 years of service. She was a member of Boone Trail Baptist Church.
Jana was the kindest person you could ever meet. She had a positive impact on everyone she came into contact with. You could not go anywhere in town without her striking up multiple conversations with friends. She loved to travel, to read, and to shop, but more than anything she loved spending time with her two grandchildren. She absolutely adored them and took every opportunity to spend time with them.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin sister, Jina “B” Greer. In addition to her husband Mike, she was blessed with one son, Matt Rossman, his wife Becca, and two wonderful grandchildren, Kailee and Levi. She was also blessed with step-daughter, Christy Hayes, her husband Dale, and their children, Cassie Chittum and Jason Buck. She is also survived by her four sisters: Terry Lewis and husband Earl; Karen Ewing and husband Bill; Robin Oxidine; Pam Arrowood and husband Tom; several nieces and nephews.

4779 JOHNSON CITY - Jane Peterson Leonard, age 89, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, February 25, 2022, at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton, Tennessee after suffering complications from a hip fracture. She was born on May 21, 1932, the oldest daughter of the late Samuel Jeffrey Peterson and Mollie Edith Ledford Peterson. In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Roy Leonard, Jr; and one son, Robert Steven Leonard.
Jane was a devoted wife and mother who loved unconditionally. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her. She graduated from Science Hill High School in 1950, where she had the honor of being a Junior ROTC sponsor, and she attended Judson College for women in Marion, Alabama. She was also member of the Junior Monday Club and the Junior Service League where she contributed to their many charitable efforts in the community. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church where she served faithfully on the Altar Guild for many years. She was an incredibly talented seamstress and she loved playing tennis, reading and being with her family.
She is survived by one daughter, Melinda, and her husband Kennie Boling; And she leaves behind one living son, Jeff Leonard. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law, Debbie Leonard. And Jane is survived by five grandchildren: Bradley Boling, S.J. Leonard and Jasmine, Jessica (Leonard) Blevins, Seth Leonard and his wife Ellyn, and Emily (Leonard) Palan. Jane will also be greatly missed by her four great grandchildren, Jacob and Mia Blevins, and Bryan, and Ronin Leonard. Jane is also survived by her sister, Shirley Peterson Cloyd. And she also leaves behind one living brother-in-law, Dwight “Greasy” Leonard, and several nieces and nephews.

She was born on June 5, 1932 in Butler, Tennessee to the late Jacob Lowe and the late Ruby Arnold Lowe. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her two sons: William Ellis Teague and Douglas Hobart Teague and one brother: JL Lowe. Jane believed in the Baptist faith and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Gray. She enjoyed spending time with her dog Molly, traveling, or in her garden. 4781 JOHNSON CITY - Janet Ann “Jann” Gouge, age 64, passed away at home in October of 2022. Jann was born on April 17, 1958 and was a lifelong resident of Johnson City.

Jann graduated from Science Hill High School and the University of Tennessee. Jann was a Special Education teacher who served as a resource math teacher at Science Hill High School and Liberty Bell Middle School. She had a gift for working with students who were sometimes the hardest to reach. It was her desire to see them succeed. She also served as a home bound teacher before she retired.

She loved all things Scottish and enjoyed researching her family heritage as a Rankin descendant as well as participating in Scottish fiddling with her mother, Ann Gouge. It was a dream come true for her to visit Scotland and Northern Ireland with the Appalachian Studies program at ETSU. She also served a brief time as a missionary to Venezuela working with students and developing a program for urban teenagers.

As a graduate of the University of Tennessee, she loved UT football and basketball. Jann was an accomplished photographer who enjoyed documenting family and life. She was an avid reader as evidenced by the hundreds of books which decorated her home.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Johnson City for many years, and also Fountain of Life Church of Washington County.

Jann was preceded in death by her parents, Ann Beeson Gouge and Gerry C. Gouge.

She is survived by many cousins, including: Rick Beeson, Ann Caroline Bean, Mary Beth Poliak, and David Ellison. The family is very grateful for the many years of friendship and kindness shown to Jann by Renee Pitts and Steven Tester.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

4782 JOHNSON CITY - Janet Leigh Isenberg, former married name Robinson, of Johnson City TN passed away February 19, 2019. Born August 17, 1955. (Picture is from her youth.)

She was born and raised in Johnson City, and the third daughter born to the late Lois Evelyn (Deloach) and Karl Isenberg. She was a former English teacher at ETSU, having received her Master's degree in English Literature from the same institution. More than anything she enjoyed dogs, reading and cooking for holidays.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sisters Karla Annette Birchfield, Lisa Robyn Wilhoit, and her brother, Larry Keith Isenberg.

Surviving family is her daughter, Courtney (Robinson) Thrift and husband Lee of Winston Salem NC, ex-husband and part-time care-taker Kenneth Robinson of Johnson City TN, Neices Candice (Candi) (Earp) Ayers of TN, Amy (Isenberg) Kelley of TN, Nephews Kyle Shannon Earp and wife Becky of TN, and Adam Isenberg of GA. She also had extended family with cousins, grand-nieces and nephews and great grandnephews.

4783 JOHNSON CITY - Jason Worley Snyder, 106, Johnson City, passed away Sunday, September 11, 2016 at Hillview Health Center in Elizabethton.

Jason was born on August 4, 1910 to the late Roy Mineyard and Mary Alice Grindstaff Snyder.

Jason grew up in the Valley Forge Community in Carter County, TN. He graduated from the elementary school in that community and the Elizabethton High School in Elizabethton, TN. He received his B.S. Degree from East Tennessee State Teacher's College and taught elementary and high school in Carter County for five years prior to volunteering for the Army/Air Force in July 1942. His military service was for three and one half years. He served as Technical Specialist Staffing and Personnel Management in the 12th Air Force Service Command in North Africa and Italy. Jason was honorably discharged as Staff Sergeant on December 24, 1945. At his death, he was the oldest WWII veteran in the state of TN.

After leaving the service, Jason secured employment with the Veterans Administration as a Training Officer. He lived in Knoxville until 1954, when he transferred to the Veterans Administration Central Office in Washington, D.C., where he worked for two years as a Paper Management Analyst. He transferred from the V.A. to the Navy in Washington, D.C., where he worked in various departments of the Navy until his retirement from the Navy Sea Systems command on December 31, 1977. While working in D.C. he lived in Alexandria, V.A. and was a member of National City Christian Church in Washington, D.C., where he served as a Deacon, Elder and on various committees as a Laymen.

Jason became a Master Mason on July 26, 1946 at Dashiel Lodge #238, F.&A.M. in Elizabethton, TN. He affiliated with Alexandria-Washington Lodge #22, A.F. &A.M. and proudly served as its master in 1979. Jason is also a Royal Arch mason, Knights Templar, Past commander of Old Dominion Commandery #11, Past Patron of Martha Washington Chapter #42, O.E.S., and Venerable Master of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Alexandria, VA.

Jason was an honorary member of the B.E. Wooton class-super Excellent Mason since November 6, 1957.

He has an Honorary and Permanent Life Memberhsip of the Jericho Shrine Temple, A.S.O.N.M.S. of Kingsport, TN. He was an honorary member of Rhea Lodge in Jonesborough, TN. On November 20, 1993, he was honored with the Illustrious Thirty-Third Degree of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Knoxville, TN, where he was a member. He was presented his 50-year pin by the Scottish Rite on August 4, 2014. He was presented a plaque on August 4, 2016 for his 70 years of faithful service to the Masonic order by the Worshipper Grand Master of the state of VA.

He moved to Johnson City in 1980, where he married his second wife, Frances. They worshiped at Central Baptist Church and he was a member of William Rigell Sunday School.

Jason made Colonial Hill Retirement Center his home for 12 years until he moved to Hillview Health Center in July 2016.

In addition to his parents, Jason was preceded in death by: his first wife, Viola Wilson Synder, from 1949 until she passed away in 1973; his second wife, Frances Shoun, from 1980 until she passed away in 2007; two sisters, Wanda Elliot and Hazel Bashor; three brothers, W.D. (Doc) Snyder, Maywood Snyder, and Dudley Snyder.

Survivors include: one step-daughter, Sandra Shoun, of Arlington, VA; one step-grandson, Brandon Curry, of Arlington, VA; one sister, Myrtle Taylor, of Johnson City, TN; three brothers, Ben Snyder, of Mountain City, TN, Floyd Snyder and his wife Joann, of Elizabethton, TN, John Snyder and his wife Ethel, of Elizabethton, TN; sister-in-law, Gladys Snyder, of Johnson City; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and special great-great nice, Marlei Snyder, of Johnson City, TN; and several cousins in KY, CA, and TN that have kept in close contact.

4784 JOHNSON CITY - Jeffery Lorne Dugger, 60, of Johnson City passed away at Johnson City Medical Center on July 6, 2022.

Jeffery was a lifelong resident of Johnson City. He was the son of the late Teddy and Joyce Dugger. He was a graduate of Science Hill High School. Jeffery proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Just like a Marine, he was loyal and faithful to his friends and family, who he loved dearly. He was always willing to do anything for his family or a stranger and never asked for anything in return. There are not enough words to describe what a wonderful person he was. He was employed at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center until his health required him to retire.

In addition to his parents Jeffery was preceded in death by his grandparents, William and Pearl Mcinturff, Rosamond and Amanda Fields Dugger; brother-in-law James D. Hughes Jr.

4785 JOHNSON CITY - Jennie Lee Hubbard, 86, of Johnson City passed away peacefully on February 16, 2023. Jennie was born on September 21, 1936 in Johnson City to the late, Albert and Dora (Strickland) Spaller. Jennie and her husband were Foster Parents for over 30 years and enjoyed helping the children in need. She enjoyed taking care of her flowers in her garden and decorating her house each month.

In addition to her parents, Jennie was predeceased by her loving husband of 64 years, Bill Hubbard; her son, Larry Hubbard; brothers, Albert Spaller Jr. and David Spaller; and 3 sisters-in-law. Left to cherish her memory are her children and their spouses, Teresa (Benny) Lawson of Watauga, Billy (Cathy) Hubbard of Johnson City, Lisa (Paul) Adams of Elizabethton, and Jenny (Greg) Hall of Georgia; sister-in-law, Marynell Spaller; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

4786 JOHNSON CITY - Jerri Ann Britt Surber, 81, of Johnson City, TN, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, January 20, 2020.

Jerri was born in Carter County on March 22, 1938, to the late Myrtle Beryl Hayes Britt and James Van Britt. She was a graduate of Happy Valley High School, Pinellas County School of Nursing in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Tarrant County Junior College in Fort Worth, Texas. Jerri was a nurse for twenty years and then became owner of Surber Insurance Agency for twenty-five years where she represented AFLAC Insurance Company among many other insurance companies. She served on the Board of Directors of Wise County Hospital and Wise County Christian School both located in Wise, VA. Jerri was also a reporter for Ring Magazine.

In addition to her parents, Jerri is preceded in death by a sister, Jimmie Lee Britt and a brother, Joseph E. Britt. Those left to cherish her memory include her two sons Jack Surber and his wife Sandy of Jonesborough, TN and Jim Surber and his wife Terin of Ft. Worth, Texas; three sisters, Jenny Ward and Rose Armstrong both of Elizabethton and Becky Harber-Haynes of Johnson City; six granddaughters, Candi Meade, Molly Dienna, Amy Foster, Ashley Morrell, Mandy Turner, and Courtney Fry; thirteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Special thanks and appreciation are to her granddaughters, Molly Dienna and Ashley Morrell for their committed love and care to their grandmother during her illness. The family is grateful to Amedisys Hospice RN Laura Evans for her incredible care and dedication to Jerri and her family.

4787 JOHNSON CITY - Jerry Pierce, age 81, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at his residence.

He was born in Carter County, Tennessee, a son of the late Henry and Mollie Fritts Pierce. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Fred, Clarence, R.C., R.H., R.J., Darrell, and Roy; one grandson, Joshua; and four sisters, Margaret "Crickett", Viola, Oma, Rosetta.

Jerry was of the Baptist faith and had worked for Burlington Mills and City of Johnson City.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carolyn Pierce; three sons, Ronnie Pierce and wife Gail, Sherrill Pierce, and Carroll Pierce; one daughter, Sonia Kay Estep and husband Wayne; six grandchildren; one step grandson; one great granddaughter; two sisters, Sue and Lorene; and several cousins.

4788 JOHNSON CITY - Jerry R. Hensley, 89, of Johnson City passed away on June 16th, 2023. He was born to the late Opie Read and Stella Couch Hensley. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean Masters Hensley; two sisters, Jane Dugger and Grace Beth Bowers; and a niece Kathy Dugger Edwards

Jerry graduated of the class of 1953 from Elizabethton High School. He then went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in technology from National University in San Diego, CA. He also earned his private pilot’s license. Jerry loved working on cars, he was an avid reader of the newspaper, he especially enjoyed reading the Wall Street Journal. Jerry retired as General Manager at Stang Industrial Products. He was also an Air Force veteran.

Those left to cherish his memory are a niece, Jerrie Sue Bowers and husband James Schwietzer; a nephew, Mark S. Dugger and wife Vickie; and his beloved cat “Sue”

4789 JOHNSON CITY - Jerry Wayne Hilbert, Sr., age 76, of Johnson City, Tennessee, went Home to be with Jesus, on Friday, August 27, 2021, at Johnson City Medical Center.

He was a native and longtime resident of Johnson City. He was born on April 23, 1945, to the late Arcie Hilbert and Margaret Josephine Flaherty Hilbert.

Jerry was a proud Army Veteran. Following his service, he worked for Pepsi Co. in Johnson City for over 40 years. He was also a chaplain at Franklin Woods Community Hospital. In his free time, he enjoyed trout fishing and deer hunting.

Jerry was a member of Walnut Christian Church.

In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Hazel, in 2009; and his sister, Pat Wilson.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Jerry Hilbert Jr.; daughter, Ginger (and David) Durbin; grandchildren, Amber Oxendine, Brittany Hughes, Austin Durbin, and Dalton Durbin; and great-grandson, Tristin Oxendine.

A committal service will be held on Thursday, September 2, 2021, at 10:00 am at Washington County Memory Gardens, under the portico to the mausoleum. 4790 JOHNSON CITY - Jessie Greene King, age 76, of Johnson City, TN, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at her residence. She was born in Bakersville, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Ford Greene and Belle Whitson Greene. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Bernice Udry; one brother, Bernie Greene; and one nephew, Matthew B. Greene.

Jessie was a Christian. In previous years she had worked for Penny’s Department Store in Sales. In later years, she worked as a housewife and loved spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Ronnie King; two step daughters, Kim Stanewicz and Danielle Spurling; four step grandchildren; two step great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Nancy Greene; three nieces, Sandra Houser, Sandra Gail Newell, and Julie Johnson; three nephews, Matthew Greene, Jeff Greene, and Ronnie Lowe; and her special dog, Spencer.

There will be no formal services held.

Jessie was born in North Carolina to the late George Dewey and Nancy Rambo Lewis.

After 20 years, Jessie retired in the 80's from working in the canteen cafeteria at Mountain Home.

In addition to her parents, Jessie was preceded in death by: her husband, James Tucker, in 1996; one daughter, Yvonne Swingle, in 2005; and several brothers.

Survivors include: two daughters, Kristi Harrell and her husband Andy and Nancy Walsh; four grandchildren, Rachel Golla and her husband Christopher, Jodie Strap and her husband Ed, Rick Royston and his wife Stephanie and Holden Harrell; nine great grandchildren; son-in-law, Richard Swingle; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Amy Proffitt and the entire staff of Amedysis Hospice for the care they provided, especially, Laura, Sarah, Joni, Steven and Kay.

A committal service will be held at 10 AM on Monday, December 2, 2019, at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Chaplain Steven Spell. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery by 9:50 am.

4792 JOHNSON CITY - Jewel Fern Baird Shipley, 80, Johnson City, died Sunday, March 19, 2023, at her residence, following a lengthy illness.

Jewel was a native of Watauga County, NC, and lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was a daughter of the late Henry Clay and Georgia Cleota Snyder Baird.

Jewel received her Bachelor of Nursing Degree from East Tennessee State University.

She began her health care career in 1966 with the Washington County Health Department as a staff nurse in the Child Health and Family Planning Clinics. In 1983, Jewel moved to the Northeast Tennessee Regional Health Office where she held multiple positions, including Child Health and Development Nursing Consultant, Maternal and Child Health Nursing Consultant, and Regional Director of Children’s Special Services Program, retiring in 2009 after forty-three years of dedicated Public Health Nursing services. Jewel was proud to have been awarded the Federal Southeast Region Maternal and Child Health Nursing Award. She was a lifetime member of the Tennessee Public Health Association and formerly served on their Nursing Board. Jewel was also a longtime Volunteer Nurse for the American Red Cross.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Jewel enjoyed spending time at the family’s second home, Venture Out of Gatlinburg, sewing and playing Solitaire.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-seven years, Baxter Hamer Shipley, in 2020, her daughter, Melissa Shipley Slagle, in 1995, a granddaughter, Zoe Bryann Shipley, in 2019, a sister, Iva Saylor, and an infant brother, Harlan Baird.

Jewel is survived by two sons, Bryan Shipley, Jonesborough, Robert Shipley and wife Laura, Jonesborough; three grandchildren, Jessica Slagle De La Vega and husband Salvador, Ty Shipley, Sara Shipley Hood and husband Morgan, all of Jonesborough; three great-grandchildren, Rylie De La Vega, Ava De La Vega, and Kimber Hood, all of Jonesborough; son-in-law, Johnny Slagle; one sister, Reba Freeman, Johnson City; two brothers, Thomas Baird, Gray, and Henry Baird, Morristown; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

4793 JOHNSON CITY - Jewell Vaught Collins, 88, Johnson City, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Friday, April 7, 2023, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Jewell was born September 14, 1934, and was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City. She was a daughter of the late Alvin C. and Tishia Howard Vaught.

Jewell was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed working in her yard. She was an active member of Antioch Baptist Church in Johnson City, where she served in various capacities over the years.

In addition to her parents Jewell was preceded in death by her husband, Freddie C. Collins.

Those left to cherish her memory are her brother, David H. Vaught and his wife Trula, and several nieces and nephews.

4794 JOHNSON CITY - Jim R. Birchfield, 66, Johnson City passed away unexpectedly Sunday May 12, 2019 in the Queen's Medical Center, Honolulu, Hawaii.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Ellik & Bonnie Townsend Birchfield. Jim was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. He was retired as a Store Manager with Kroger's. He was Administrator of the Elizabethton Moose Lodge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son: Travis Birchfield and one daughter: Casey Rae Birchfield, two Brothers: Worley, & Cecil Birchfield and a sister: Jean Lund.

Survivors include his wife Cindy Walker Birchfield, a granddaughter: Reygan Birchfield, Two Step-Sons: Andrew (Olivia) Walker, and Cory (Kelsie) Walker and Step-Grandson: Cory (Shelbie) Malukiewicz. A Step-Granddaughter: Lillieann Walker, and soon to arrive: step-grandson: Hensley T. Walker. 4795 JOHNSON CITY - Jimmy C. Babb, 72, Johnson City went home to be with his Lord, Friday, August 20, 2021 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Johnson City and was the son of Nola Troxell Babb of Johnson City and the late Cecil Babb. Jimmy was a veteran having served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a longtime member of Happy Valley Church of Jesus Christ where he served as Office Administrator and Missions Director.

Jim’s life was a display of a servants heart. He was always reaching out to individuals less fortunate in life. Jim had a gift to listen and offer help or advice in any situation. He did not value many material possessions in life, but his family was his treasure. His greatest blessings were his granddaughters, Ashley and Courtney.

Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife, Linda Keene Babb of the home; his son, Scottie Babb and wife, Alyshia ( whom he cherished like his own daughter) of Johnson City; two sisters, Rita Greene and husband, Johnny of Murfreesboro and Judy Walker and husband, Skip of Johnson City; his granddaughters, Ashley Babb and Courtney Babb; nieces, Myra Braun and Ginger Panter; nephews, Jeremy Walker and Michael Walker; also several cousins.

Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday, August 24, 2021 at 10:30 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park with his friend and Pastor, Donny Reagan officiating. Pallbearers will be Scott Babb, Johnny Greene, Skip Walker, J.D. Whitson, Michael Bailey, Jackie Tipton, Randy Babb and Larry Miller. 4796 JOHNSON CITY - Jo Ann Forbes Blankenship, 79, of Johnson City, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Jo Ann was born in Carter County on December 18, 1939 to the late William Milburn and Florence Anna Forbes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, George W. "Pete" Blankenship; and two brothers, William "Bill" Forbes and Jack M. Forbes.

Jo Ann was a 1957 graduate of Elizabethton High School. She graduated from Baptist School of Nursing in Memphis (1960) where she received her RN. Jo Ann was a graduate of East Tennessee State University where she received both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (1984) and Master of Education (1987) degrees. She was a member of Phi Delta Kappa Honor Society.

Jo Ann was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and diligent community servant. Jo Ann attended Watauga United Methodist Church. She retired as a registered nurse after 39 years of service with 38 of those years being at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center at Mountain Home. She spent most of those years working in the Operating Room Department. In the OR she first worked as a staff nurse, was promoted to head nurse and then led the department as the OR nursing supervisor. She was a member of the State of Franklin Association of Operating Room Nurses, American Nursing Association, Tennessee Nurses Association, and the Tri-Cities Association of Operation Room Nurse (Past President and board of directors).

Upon her retirement, Jo Ann served Carter County for 16 years as a Commissioner representing the Fifth District. She also served the community by being on the boards of and volunteering with numerous organizations including the West Carter County Volunteer Fire Department, the Jane and Charlie Bayless Scholarship Fund, and Sycamore Shoals Hospital. In retirement, Jo Ann became a talented artisan working with many different materials to create beautiful jewelry. She loved the time that she spent at jewelry school with her sister. She was a great fan of UT football and basketball. Jo Ann's most beloved activity was spending time with her grandchildren and other family members.

Those left to cherish her loving memory include: son, George W. Blankenship, Jr. and wife Jennifer (Elizabethton); grandson, Jacob Blankenship (Elizabethton); granddaughter, Natalie Blankenship (Elizabethton); brothers, Roy Forbes and Erma Stevens (Elizabethton); brother, E. Wesley Forbes and wife Linda (Elizabethton) and Duane Forbes and wife Loretta (Elizabethton); sister, Edith Delp and husband Ray (Panama City Beach, FL); sisters-in-law, Mary Forbes (Elizabethton), Dorothy Forbes (Elizabethton), Nancy Gale Broyles and husband Charles "Chuck" (Johnson City) and Marie Blankenship (Elizabethton); and several nieces and nephews.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Jo Ann Forbes Blankenship will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway Percy Funeral Home and Cremation Services with Reverend Leann Crandall and Reverend Mike Berry, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Tuesday.

4797 JOHNSON CITY - Jo Ruth Counts-Hughes of Johnson City passed away Wednesday, April 12, 2017 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a native of Spruce Pine, North Carolina and was the daughter of the late Charles and Annie Loven Boone. Mrs. Hughes was retired from ETSU where she had worked in the Charles Sherrod Library. She was a longtime member of the Church of Jesus in Johnson City. Mrs. Hughes was a 1952 graduate of Science Hill High School and a graduate of Steed College. She was a member of the Musical Voices and enjoyed painting. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her first husband, Walter Counts; her step-father, Maynard Anderson and a half-brother, Franklin Delano Anderson.

Survivors include her husband, Lester W. Hughes; three brothers, Hugh Boone of Spruce Pine, NC, Harry Anderson of Piney Flats and McDonald Anderson of Johnson City; two step-sons, Les Hughes of Ohio and Mark Hughes of Georgia; also several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Hughes will be conducted at 7:00 PM Monday, April 17, 2017 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Pastor George Hall officiating. Music will be provided by David Frances and the Musical Voices. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until the service hour. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, April 18, 2017 in Salem Cemetery, Washington College area. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

4798 JOHNSON CITY - Joan Blevins Campbell, age 78, of Johnson City, TN passed away Friday, August 6, 2021 at Dominion Senior Living of Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Houston Sharp Blevins and Ruth Isabelle Greene Blevins. Joan was a beloved school teacher for over 30 years with the Elizabethton City School System. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Elizabethton, but recently had been attending Grace Fellowship Church. She enjoyed antiquing, gardening, and traveling with family and friends. In the past few years, Mrs. Campbell enjoyed spending time with her good friend Jim. They enjoyed sporting events, dinners and short day trips. Above all, Joan loved Jesus and showed His love to others.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Campbell; a special nephew, Kevin Brooks Welch; sister, Audrey Welch and brother, Wayne Blevins. Those left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Courtney Pickel and husband Eric, of Johnson City and Marcy Buchanan and husband Jason, of Jupiter, Florida; three grandchildren, Brooks, Palmer, and Crew Buchanan; twin sister, Joyce Campbell and husband N.T., of Chattanooga; sister, Mildred Rash, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Mrs. Campbell was a special aunt to many nieces and nephews, who always loved visiting Aunt Joan’s home. She was also blessed with an abundance of very special friends.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Joan Blevins Campbell will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, August 14, 2021 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home. Music will be under the direction of Sherry Smith. Friends may sign the guest register book on Friday, August 13, 2021 between the hours of 10:00 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Saturday.

4799 JOHNSON CITY - Joan Darden, 88, Johnson City, died Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at Franklin Woods Community Hospital, following a short illness.

She was born Polly Joan Harrell, on August 28, 1932, in Bulladean, NC, the 4th child of Iss and Frances Street Harrell.

Joan graduated from Science Hill High School and attended East Tennessee State University. She worked many years for Randolph Anderson at Anderson Realty. In 1973, she joined her husband Tommy in opening and operating Darden’s Clothiers, which sold finer menswear and women’s clothing. Joan loved prom season and fashion shows. She was an active member of Munsey Memorial Methodist Church and the Virgil Anderson Sunday School Class.

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas “Tommy” Malcolm Darden Sr.in 2017, brother, Henry Harrell, sisters, Florence Elrod, and Ethel Foister.

Joan is survived by her son, Dr. Thomas M. Darden Jr. and wife Carla Jones Darden of Albany, GA; grandchildren, Grace Darden, Patrick (Becca) Miller, Cole Miller, Alec Miller; sisters, Mary Lee Smith, Lena (Romley) Wallace; brothers, Bill (Jackie) Harrell, Bobby (Alice) Harrell; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews on the Darden and Harrell sides of the family.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 S. Roan St. Johnson City, with The Reverend Michael Lester and The Reverend Douglas Grove-DeJarnett, officiating. Interment will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park. 4800 JOHNSON CITY - Joan Hobson Ayers, age 81, Johnson City, went to her heavenly home on Monday, October 25, 2021, while she was surrounded by her loving family. She is a daughter of the late John and Helen Burleson Hobson. Joan was a native of Bakersville, NC and lived in various states while her husband served in the military. She moved to Johnson City in 1966.
Joan was a devoted Christian. One of her favorite bible verses was Psalm 39:1. Joan had written in her bible a verse from Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace, Saint Francis Prayer: Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Joan was a dedicated homemaker whose life revolved around taking care of her family. She was an extremely loving wife, mother and grandmother. Joan was very interested in fashion and enjoyed modeling locally in Elizabethton. She was a fashion consultant for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-three years, H. Wayne Ayers and one brother, Charles Donald Hobson.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, two sons: Steve Ayers (Sherry) and John Ayers (Paula), all of Johnson City; five grandchildren: Austin Ayers, Eli Ayers, Johnathon Ayers, Jonathon Hubbard and Matthew Hubbard; one sister, Camille O’Neill (Tim); sister-in-law, Jean Hobson, all of Johnson City.
A private family graveside service will be held at the family cemetery.
