She was born in Elizabethton, TN and was the daughter of the late Arthur “Sonny” Shoun and Georgia Lewis Shoun. She was a former member of Butler Baptist Church and Antioch Baptist Church, Johnson City. She attended Fountain of Life Bible Church, Johnson City when her health permitted. She was a member of the following organizations: Charter Member Rolling Thunder Chapter 4 Elizabethton, TN; Life Member Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2108 Auxiliary, Johnson City; Member Military Order of the Cootie Pup Tent 5 Auxiliary, Smyrna, TN; Member of Butler Chapter # 218 Order of Eastern Star.

She is survived by her Husband of 44 Years, THP Lt. (Ret.) Bill Hampton, Brother , Bill (Yvonne) Shoun, Hampton, TN, Niece, Stephanie Shoun (Chris) Grindstaff, Elizabethton and Nephew, William (Chessie) Shoun, Elizabethton, She is also survived by several Great Nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2021 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Daniel Wood, officiating. The family will receive friends from 11a.m.-12:30 p.m. prior to the service. The graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 18, 2021, at Mountain Home National Cemetery (New Section); everyone is to meet at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Active Pallbearers are: Larry Reece, Gary Reece, Donnie Danner, Chris Grindstaff, William Shoun, Zachary Young, 2 Members from Rolling Thunder Chapter 4 TN. 4652 JOHNSON CITY - Carolyn Sue Copas Nickles, age 76, of Johnson City died Wednesday, July 31, 2019 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton.

Carolyn was born on October 29, 1942 in Johnson City to the late Horace Copas and Dansford Lundsford Copas. She was a homemaker and she raised six children. Her family will always remember her enthusiasm for attending yard sales.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard Nickles; two sisters; and three brothers.

She is survived by her children, Ricky (Sandy) Nickles, Tina Nickles, Bobby Joe (Renee) Nickles, Brian (Teresa) Nickles, Tiffany Nickles and J.R. Christenson, and Candy Cordova and Larry White; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; brothers, George (Sherry) Copas, David (Barbara) Copas, Billy Joe Copas, Leroy (Shirley) Brown; and many nieces and nephews.

Carolyn's family will receive friends on Monday, August 5, 2019, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. at Washington County Memory Gardens.

4653 JOHNSON CITY - Carolyn Sue Jenkins Oaks, 76, of Johnson City, passed away during the early morning hours of Tuesday, December 7, 2021.
She was born on June 26, 1945, to the late Christine (Hodges) and William A. Jenkins.
Carolyn was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a generous and caring woman who will be missed by her friends, family, and all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, Carolyn is preceded in death by her brother, William “Eddie” Jenkins.
Carolyn is survived by her husband, Gernie Eugene Oaks; daughter, Kim (Odom) Sawyer and husband Wayne Sawyer; four grandchildren, Jaima (Ward) Price and husband Paul Price, Cory Ward and Michele Lamb, Mikayla (Tapp) Miller and husband Cameron Miller, Wyatt Sawyer and wife Amanda Sawyer; three great-grandchildren, Reagan Price, Abram Price, and Baby Ward; three sisters, Barbara Shipley, Kathy Denton, and Gail Sherfey; and many loving nieces and nephews who cared for her and will cherish her forever.
A graveside service to celebrate the life of Carolyn J. Oaks will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Saturday, December 11th, 2021 at Monte Vista Memorial Park, section 21, in Johnson City, TN.
The family wishes to express thanks to Kevin Laws, Audrea Miller and staff at Center on Aging, Unicoi County Hospital staff and nurse Katherine Stines, and to her many cherished friends for the guidance and special care given to Carolyn.

4654 JOHNSON CITY - Carolyn White Goodman Horrell, 86, of Johnson City, passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.

She was a native of Johnson City, and a daughter of the late Howard Wiley White and Pearl Copas White.

Carolyn was a graduate of Science Hill High School. She also earned her BS in music at ETSU and later her master’s in library science from Emory University.

She taught Music to the students of Bluff City Elementary and then Fairmont Elementary before beginning work as the school’s librarian. She also worked as a library instructor at various schools in Atlanta, GA and Asheville, NC.

Carolyn remained active in church throughout her life. She was a member of Central Baptist Church, as well as the Church at Wieuca (formerly Wieuca Road Baptist Church) in Atlanta, and the First Baptist Church of Asheville, NC.

Music was her greatest joy, and Carolyn always loved to sing in the choir. She enjoyed spending time reading and travelling, and also did volunteer work at Mission Hospital in Asheville.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by: her first husband, Bob Goodman, and second husband, Harry Horrell; children, Brenda Goodman and twin infant sons; and brothers-in-law, John Young and Charles “Skip” Goodman.

Those surviving include: sister, Dolores Young; niece, Denise Davenport and husband Dennis; nephews, Mark Young and wife Lora, Bruce Young and wife Revonda, Mike Young and wife Marcia, Dale Goodman and wife Kathy; and sisters-in-law, Nancy Goodman and Jean Goodman.

The family of Carolyn Horrell will receive friends from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM on Friday, March 31st, 2023, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. In addition, those attending may pay their respects to Brenda Goodman, for whom cremation rites have been accorded. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM, officiated by Pastor Gene Elliott. Following, there will be a procession from the funeral home to Monte Vista Memorial Park, where a committal will be held for Carolyn and Brenda at 2:00 PM.

4655 JOHNSON CITY - Carsie Hyder Lodter, age 100, of Johnson City, passed away Friday evening, January 19, 2018 at Grace Healthcare, Abingdon, Virginia.

She was born at Milligan College, Tennessee June 21, 1917, and grew up in the Hyder family home on property that adjoined the campus.

Milligan College played a major part in Mrs. Lodter's early life. Her parents, the late Sam Jack Hyder and Mary Thomas Hyder, had met there as students; her father taught in the mathematics department for over fifty years; and three of her siblings were graduates. Milligan is also where she met her husband, the late Edward Colin Gustave Lodter, a professor in the foreign language department. She graduated from Milligan summa cum laude, and was named the most outstanding student in the senior class.

After her college graduation, Mrs. Lodter taught home economics at Elizabethton High School for seven years, and also taught for one year at Milligan. She later received her master's degree from East Tennessee State University (ETSU), and was an assistant professor there for twenty-three years, teaching nutrition and clothing & textiles. During that time, she served as a faculty advisor of Sigma Kappa Sorority and of Kappa Omicron Phi, an honors society. Mrs. Lodter also took postgraduate courses at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She became a lifetime member of Phi Kappa Phi, an honors society, and was an officer of the ETSU Women's Faculty Club, and of the ETSU Retired Teachers Association.

Mrs. Lodter was a dedicated and active member of First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton, where her husband served as organist for over fifty years. She held several positions at the church, including lay leader, and she was president of the United Methodist Women.

Love for her immediate and extended family was of primary importance, and time spent together was cherished by all. She also made and retained close friends throughout all phases of her life. In addition to having an exceptional professional career, Mrs. Lodter was an unequaled homemaker. She enjoyed her bountiful rose garden, and was noted for its award-winning blooms and for the potpourri she made from their petals. She was also a remarkable seamstress, and made clothes for herself and for family members.

In addition to her parents and her husband, five siblings preceded Mrs. Lodter in death: Oris Doyle Hyder, Aline Hyder Hardwick, Jean Thomas Hyder, Nelta Hyder Warnock, and an unnamed brother who died in infancy.

Mrs. Lodter is survived by a daughter, Schéry Collins and her husband David Collins of Abingdon, Virginia, and by a son, Daniel Edward Lodter, of Hagerstown, Maryland. She leaves eight grandchildren: Helen Lambert of Bristol, Tennessee, Sahra Wilkins of Tega Cay, South Carolina, Blaine Young of Charlotte, North Carolina, Emilie Blanquie of Charlotte, North Carolina, Scott Collins of Roanoke, Virginia, Colin Lodter of Alexandria, Virginia, Brayden Lodter of Arlington, Virginia and Thomas Finley of Arlington, Virginia. Eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive her.

Following a private burial, a service to celebrate the life of Carsie Hyder Lodter will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton with Rev. Raymond Amos, Sr. officiating, assisted by Fr. Boyd Evans, St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Abingdon, Virginia. Music will be under the direction of Schéry Lodter Collins, with the participation of David Collins, Lauren and Hannah Hoffman, Rebecca Paluzzi, the church's Chancel Choir (Tyler Fleming, director; David Arney, organist), and choir members from St. Thomas Episcopal Church. After the service, the family will greet friends in the fellowship hall.

4656 JOHNSON CITY - Charles "Willie" Dayton Williams, 84, Johnson City, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 5, 2018, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Charles was born in Hampton, TN to the late Henry and Polly Hill Williams.

Charles was a veteran of the United States Air Force and a lifelong member of Grace Free Will Baptist Church. He loved to play softball with community and church leagues. He also really enjoyed being apart of the volunteer security at his church.

In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by: three sisters, Vorita Shelton, Pansy Guy and Lula Mae Harrell.

Survivors include: his wife of 61 years, Evelyn Jewel Miller Williams; one son, Chuck Williams and his wife Robin; one daughter, Kim Johnson; two grandsons, Joshua Williams and Noah Johnson; three great grandsons, Dylan, Roland and Bodhi Williams; one brother, George Williams; and several nieces and nephews.

The family of Willie Williams will receive friends from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Sunday, April 8, 2018 at Grace Free Will Baptist Church. The funeral service will follow at 6:00 PM with Pastor Curtis Hurt officiating. Pallbearers include: Joshua Williams, Noah Johnson, Tanner Leach, Jim Schweitzer, Aaron Johnson, Dylan Williams, Chris Darnell and David Johnson. Honorary pallbearers include: Bill Greer, Tykie Light, Joe Tittle, Garland Hood, Troy Garland, Homer Greene, George Williams and Doug Jenkins. 4657 JOHNSON CITY - Charles Edward Bogart, 85 of Johnson City, died Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at his home. Ed was a native of Johnson City, son of the late Isaac Raymond and Gertrude McKinney Bogart.

He was a retired Quality Engineer for Electrolux after 25 years service, prior to that he worked as a Quality Engineer for Raytheon.

Ed loved his family and had a passion for golf. When his wife was living they loved travel and square dancing.

Survivors include; his son and daughter-in-law, Charles Edward Bogart, Jr. and Kris; a daughter-in-law, Cindy Bogart; a brother, Robert and wife, Taunja Bogart; a sister, Nancy and husband Larry Hale; five grandchildren, Trey, Alli, Amber, Whitney and Weston; five great grandchildren, Ian, Harrison, Adalind, Hadleigh and Cooper ; several nieces and nephews.

A committal service will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park at 3:00 pm. A procession to the cemetery will leave at 2:45 pm. 4658 JOHNSON CITY - Charles Edward Roberts, 75, of Johnson City passed away Sunday, April 8, 2018 at his residence.

He was a native of Johnson County and was a son of the late Lawrence and Julie Potter Roberts. Mr. Roberts was a member of the New Hope Church of Christ. He was retired from the restaurant business. Mr. Roberts was an avid NASCAR Fan. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Roberts and two sisters. Peggy Peters and Patty Smith.

Survivors include his nieces and nephews, Jill Smith of Johnson City, Linda Werner and husband, Randall of Erin, TN, Michael Smith and wife, Kimberly of Bristol, VA, Mitchell Smith and wife, Michelle of Bristol, VA, Debra Guinn and husband, Joe of Elizabethton, Jackie Faver and husband, Paul of Bristol, TN, Joseph Peters and wife, Ann of Johnson City and Anthony Peters of Johnson City; also several great-nieces and nephews.

4659 JOHNSON CITY - Charles “Bud” Roy Dugger, 81, of Johnson City, passed away on Sunday, January 5, 2020, at his home.

Not all families are blessed with a special angel, but the Dugger family was. Bud will be so missed.

He was a native of Johnson City, son of the late Maston and Carrie Dugger. Bud attended the Dawn of Hope for 46 ½ years. He also attended Way of the Cross Baptist Church in Johnson City.

Uncle Bud was a special soul. He enjoyed life, never meeting a stranger. He loved Jesus and he loved women.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by: five siblings, Christina and husband Tom, Jimmy and wife Mary Lou, Peggy and husband Charlie, Eliza and husband Lucky, Shirley and husband Bud.

Those left to cherish his memory, and oh the memories they have, are several nieces and nephews who love him so much, and his beloved cat, Sammy.

4660 JOHNSON CITY - Charles “Charlie” Clayton Hartley, 68, Johnson City passed away Friday, May 13, 2022 at his residence. A native of Mountain City, he was a son of the late Thomas and Bertha Jenkins Hartley. He had lived in Carter County most of his life. Charlie was retired as a truck driver with the City of Johnson City Waste Water Treatment Plant. He loved bass fishing, eating, hunting, golf and music. He was a member of the Simerly Creek Believers Fellowship Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Maude Munsey and four brothers: Carl, Dallas, Paul and Clyde Hartley.

Survivors include his wife and soul mate of 43 years: Charlene Holtsclaw Hartley. Three Children: Anita Allen, Jan Hartley Ball & husband David, April Turner & husband Benji and “Bonus Son” Joe Holtsclaw and wife Alaina. Four Grandchildren: Zack Allen, Dakota Allen, Kayla Hartley and Brittany Hartley. 6 Great Grandchildren. One brother Luther Hartley & wife Kathy and three sisters Iva Lee Copas, Ruby & Helen. He had a special place in his heart for Cheyanne Richardson, Paisley Holtsclaw and his dog Rowdy.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, 2022 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Holtsclaw and Rev. Steve Holtsclaw officiating. Interment will follow in the Holtsclaw family cemetery. Music will be provided by Kevin & Calvin Lester, Jimmy Holtsclaw, Sean Smith and Pat Teague, pianist. Active Pallbearers will be: Joe Holtsclaw, Terry Thomason, Kevin Lester, Benji Turner, Zack Allen and Dakota Allen. Honorary Pallbearers will be family, friends and his church family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Shona and Mickey Bower; and her husband, Paul E. Baker.
She is survived by one brother, Jimmie Bower and wife Martha, of North Carolina; three children, David Vaught and wife LaGina, of Jonesborough, TN, Lisa Cross, of Johnson City, TN, and Amy Vaught, of Gray, TN; two grandchildren, Caleb Vaught and wife Megan, of Johnson City, TN and Michelle Cross, of Johnson City, TN; one great granddaughter, Elsie Vaught; and several nieces and nephews.

4662 JOHNSON CITY - Charlotte Marie Campbell Chesser, 82, Johnson City, passed away Friday, May 5, 2023, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Homer Campbell and Nelda Estep Campbell Ellis. Charlotte was a 1958 graduate of Happy Valley High School. She was a homemaker. She loved to read her Bible, loved Country Gospel Music and Johnny Cash was her favorite singer. Charlotte attended University Parkway Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister: Geraldine Campbell Merritt.

Survivors include her husband of almost 63 years: Ray Chesser. Two sons: Gary Chesser and Jeffery Chesser and wife Rebecca, all of Johnson City. Two sisters: Jean Hart and Phyllis Campbell both of Elizabethton. Her special friend: Norma Hayes.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2023, in Happy Valley Memorial Park with Dr. Michael Oaks officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary Pallbearers will be her church family.

4663 JOHNSON CITY - Charlotte Marie Taylor, 91, of Johnson City, passed away early Sunday morning, November 24, 2019 at the Sycamore Springs Senior Living.

She was a daughter of the late Hugh T. Holly and Gertrude Mae Woods Holly and was born in Watauga, TN. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wesley Wentworth Taylor; three half-brothers, Brown Holly, Scott Holly and Bruce Holly; three half-sisters, Lou Lowe, Nola Shell and Queen Ramsey; and two special nephews, Leon Holly and Don Lowe.

Charlotte was a former member of Watauga Christian Church, Brick Christian Church, East River Park Christian Church and a current member of First Christian Church of Johnson City. When she attended Watauga Christian Church, she enjoyed singing in the ladies' ensemble.

Charlotte attended Elizabethton High School and graduated from Mary Hughes High School in Piney Flats, TN. She always enjoyed going to the annual Mary Hughes High School Class Reunions. Charlotte had worked in retail and was a member of the Elizabethton Women's Club. Cooking and making her famous apple pies for neighbors and friends was one of her favorite activities. She also enjoyed singing, gardening, doing crossword puzzles, reading and traveling but most of all, she loved to spend time with her family and friends.

Those left to cherish her memory include her two sons, Wesley Alan Taylor and wife, Robin of Johnson City; John Mark Taylor and wife, Julie of Lebanon, TN; four grandchildren, Wesley Dawson Taylor of Johnson City; Mason Wesley Taylor of Fort Lewis, WA; Marshall Thomas Taylor of Knoxville and Marti Ellen Taylor of Johnson City; and a special niece Carolyn Holly of Johnson City.

A service to celebrate the life of Charlotte Marie Taylor will be conducted at 7:00 PM, Monday, November 25, 2019 at Tetrick Funeral Services in Johnson City with Mr. John H. Smith, Mr. Donald Mushayamunda and Dr. Eddie Fine, ministers officiating. Music will be under the direction of Ray Don Markland. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM prior to the service in the chapel.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. 4664 JOHNSON CITY - Charlsie Ellen Lyle, age 90, of Johnson City, Tennessee, went to her Eternal Home on Thursday, December 30, 2021, surrounded by her family.
Charlsie was born October 18, 1931, to the late Charles and Hettie Cretsinger Collins in Carter County. She graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1949. She married Robert Lyle Sr. in 1950 and together they raised six children. Charlsie was a homemaker first and foremost as well as a seamstress.
She was a longtime member of Grandview Christian Church.
Charlsie will always be remembered for her infectious smile. She loved nothing more than having a house full of friends and family. Entertaining and socializing was what she loved to do.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1983; daughter, Yvonne Miller, sons, Chip Lyle and Tim Lyle; three grandchildren, Cody, Liberty, and Aaron; and siblings, Orlin Collins, Bob Collins, Wilma Taylor, and Ann Taylor.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Denise (Doug) Strickland; sons, Rick (Robin) Lyle and Robin Lyle; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Bob Hall.
Charlsie’s family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 pm on Monday, January 3, 2022, at Grandview Christian Church. Immediately following the visitation, at 4:00 pm, there will be a funeral service under the direction of Aaron Wymer and Bob Hall. Those attending are respectfully asked to wear a face covering and be mindful of social distancing. There will be a committal service on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at 2:00 pm at Monte Vista Memorial Park.

4665 JOHNSON CITY - Clabe Clifford Andes, Jr. age 84, of Johnson City, died at his home, Saturday, January 21, 2023, following a lengthy illness. Clifford was the son of the late Clabe Andes, Sr and Ercella Markwood Andes of Jonesborough, TN. In addition to his parents, Clifford was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Sweeney.

He is survived by his loving wife, Karen Mercer Andes who he always referred to as “my little darling”; children, Tammy and Tommy Adkins; grandson, Jordan Bowser; two great-grandchildren, Mack and Abby Bowser of Johnson City; niece, Frances Statzer and great niece, Debbie Oliver both of Kingsport.

Clifford attended East Tennessee State University and was a graduate of the school of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University. He began his career in 1957 at 17 years of age and served in many capacities throughout the years. At his retirement he was Senior Vice-President and community Banking Manager.

He was a member of Heritage Baptist Church and served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He served as Worship Five Master of the Masons in 1991 and a member of Jericho Shrine Temple. Clifford was a member of the Elks for 58 years and State Treasurer for 25 years. He was a Board Member of the United Emmaus Community and volunteered monthly in Asheville, NC at the Chapel of Billy Graham Training Center, the Cove. One of the most notable and admirable qualities was his integrity and his infamous wit.

The family would like to thank Avalon Hospice, the Staff at Dominion in memory care, Dr. Michael Grossrode, and Dr. Beth McCurley for their excellent care during his illness. A special heartfelt thank you to Richard and Lady Isis Koenders of Thomasville, GA, for their never-ending support and love. 4666 JOHNSON CITY - Clarence L. “Nick” Fox, 93, of Johnson City, flew to Jesus on Saturday, April 22, 2023 (Earth Day) in Johnson City, TN. He was born in Johnson City, TN to the late Lloyd and Gertrude Fox. Clarence served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He was with the 194th Engineer Combat Battalion, 9th Corps. Clarence was an avid musician and drummer, having played with the Jack Williams Band here in Johnson City and also performing sets with Doc Watson and Johnny Cash. In his spare time, Clarence loved being outdoors, being a nature and animal enthusiast, telling stories, and working with wood. He was considered a master craftsman. In recent years, Clarence raised and trained Homing Pigeons, and had just finished building a larger loft for them. He enjoyed studying American History, Native American culture and history and had an extensive knowledge of Johnson City history. Clarence retired from the Federal Housing Authority.

Including his parents, Clarence is preceded in death by his wife, Violet M. Fox; his brothers: Bob Fox, Ben Fox, and Sherman Fox; and his sisters: Thelma Price, Irene Kissinger, and Varden Roller.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Twana Fox; nephews: Greg Fox and Steve Fox; nieces: Melissa Peters, Jean Thompson, and Janice Bennett.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 26, 2023 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at Monte Vista Funeral Home.

4667 JOHNSON CITY - Clarice Shelton Harris, age 72, of Johnson City, passed away on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at her home. A native of Flag Pond, Clarice is a daughter of the late Ervin Neal and Theora Cordelia (Ramsey) Shelton. She was formerly an Accountant for the K-25 plant in Oak Ridge. She enjoyed exercise, attending meetings at the club house, hiking and spending time with her family. She especially had a soft spot for her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Clarice is preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Donald Harris; and her siblings: Willard Shelton, Loretta Turner, Rolland Shelton, Gerald Shelton, Flora Shelton, Myrtle Wilder and Bernice Silvers.

4668 JOHNSON CITY - Clayton Bryan Willis Jr of Johnson City died at 4:05 a.m. on January 29 at NHC in Johnson City, TN after a period of extended illness.

He was 95. C.B.’s life will be celebrated in a memorial service at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 605 Sunset Drive, at 1:00 p.m on February 29. Family will receive visitors one hour before the service. Immediately following the service internment will be held at Monte Vista Memorial Park with full military honors. Rev. Paul Helphenstine will officiate.

C.B. was the son of Clayton B. Willis, Sr. and Estelle Johnson Willis of Johnson City. He was predeceased by his adored wife of 67 years, Martha Rose O’Brien Willis; twin brothers, James Henry Willis and John Jack Willis of Mitchell County, NC; twins, Phyllis Willis Gardner of Johnson City and Philip Burns Willis formerly of Johnson City. Surviving family members include two sons-Steven Charles Willis and his wife Angela (Brown) Willis of Monetta, SC; Dr. Robert Clayton Willis and his wife Patricia Ruth Willis of Modoc, SC.; daughter, Carol Willis Neas and her husband Ronnie Neas of Greeneville, TN. C.B. leaves behind 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews to celebrate his homegoing.

C.B. served his country proudly in the United States Army during WWII serving in the Pacific. . He was awarded various campaign ribbons and other awards. After the war he attended ETSU for two years, then transferred to the University of Miami where he majored in accounting. While attending The University of Miami he met his life companion (Rosie), where they both were students. After graduation, C.B. was employed by General Motors Acceptance Corporation in Tennessee, Georgia, and South Carolina over a period of 35 years. Over the years C.B. was very active in the communities in which he lived. He was a 45-year member of the Lions Club in Johnson City and Columbus, GA, and in 2014 was inducted into the Tennessee Lions Club Hall of Fame. A City of Johnson City Mayoral Proclamation named May 17, 2019 Lion C.B. Willis Day and acknowledged his efforts in conjunction with Vanderbilt University to start the Johnson City Lions Club Children’s Eye Screening program. He frequently served as a fundraiser for the United Way, rang the bell for the Salvation Army, and was very active as a volunteer in Johnson City Medical Center’s Mended Hearts. C.B. was a certified Dale Carnegie Instructor and taught these courses for over 20 years. He was very proud to have donated in excess of 10 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross, continuing until prescribed medication prevented further donations. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church for over 40 years, having retired as an Elder, committee member, and church leader.

C.B. was one of the founders of Old Timers Hiking Club of Johnson City and served as secretary as long as he was able. For many years in retirement, he hiked the trails in the mountains of Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia and encouraged others to love and enjoy the beauty of the Mountain Empire. His love for the mountains compelled him to devote more than 1,000 hours to trail maintenance on the Appalachian Trail. C.B. was very thankful that he was able to pass on his deep appreciation to the environment to his children.

4669 JOHNSON CITY - Clyde "Buck" Estep, 91, Johnson City passed away Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Franklin Woods Community Hospital following a brief illness.

Mr. Estep was born July 29, 1926 to the late Frank Estep & Ludavene Parsons Estep McGee. He served in the United States Navy during World War II serving from November 27, 1944-July 27, 1946. He was preceded in death by his brother William Estep as well as an infant brother.

Mr. Estep was a 32nd Degree Mason, member of Rhea Lodge #47, Jonesborough. He was a member of the Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Valley of Knoxville, and Orient of Tennessee. Buck was a retired pipe fitter and a member of Plumbers & Pipe Fitters Local 538.

Most of all, Mr. Estep loved God and he loved people. He was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, Elizabethton. He was devoted to his wife of 71 years, Pearl Carden Estep. They enjoyed dancing and spending time with friends at the Johnson City Senior Center. He was generous to all he met whether human or animal. He never met a dog who didn't like him. As a noted prankster and storyteller, he delighted in entertaining those around him. He was a loving father and grandfather and was so proud of his loving wife Pearl.

In addition to his wife Pearl, he is survived by his daughter: Faye Ludolf and husband Jim, Asheboro, NC, his daughter: Vicky White of Oak Ridge, Tn, his son-in-law: Lee White, Elizabethton, his grandchildren: Steve Ludolf and wife Michelle, Clemmons, NC, Kate Kerekes and husband Ryan, Oak Ridge, Tn., Meg Douthard & husband Kevin, Seattle, WA., Molly White, Seattle, WA., his great grandchildren: Sarah Ludolf, Zoe Grace Ludolf, Pearl Ludolf, Patrick Kerekes, Neven Kerekes and Trevor Kerekes, his sister: Jean Schretter and husband Howard of Athens, GA., and his cousin, Curtis Estep, Suffolk, VA.

She was a native of Johnson City and was a daughter of the late Haskiel Stout and Retha Stamper Stout Church. Mrs. Holland was a member of the Lone Oak Christian Church and had worked for Johnson City Memorial Hospital and Watauga Orthopedics. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her step-father, Ernest Church; a sister, Kay Stout Miller; two brothers, James Glen Stout and LoKeal Earl Stout.

4671 JOHNSON CITY - Cora “Tinky” Lee Miller, age 78, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away at home surrounded by loved ones on Friday, April 8, 2022.
A native and lifelong resident of Johnson City, Tinky was born September 16, 1943 to the late William Brownlow Higgins and Lena Grant. She and her husband, Terry, owned and operated Terry’s Apex for 15 years. She also worked at Boone Distributing for several years.
Tinky was a longtime member of East Pine Grove Park United Methodist Church and volunteer for God’s Corner.
Tinky touched so many lives and she will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents, Tinky was preceded in death by her first husband, Lonnie Bell; grandsons, Jeffrey Bell and Luciano Bell; special grandmother, Geneva Guthrie; sister, Louise Davis; and stepson, Mark Miller.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Alfred & Lockie Williams Guy. He had lived in Michigan before returning to Tennessee. He was a graduate of Waterford Township High School in Pontiac, Michigan and received a Bachelor's Degree in Business Management at Tusculum College, Greeneville, Tn. Mr. Guy served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. He was retired from the Bosch-Braking Company as Quality Assurance Manager in Johnson City, TN. He loved to play guitar, golf and bowling. His family was his pride and joy, especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years: Penny Harmon Guy. His Daughters: Jennifer Crowe and Becky Guy Barlow. Two Grandchildren: Morgan Crowe and Dillon Barlow. A brother: Alfred Guy & wife Kimberly. A sister: Rita Persinger & husband George. Several nieces & nephews.

4673 JOHNSON CITY - Curley Peterson, 84, of Johnson City, peacefully passed away in the hospice community living center at the James H. Quillen Veteran’s Administration Hospital on Sunday, March 8, 2020.

He was born on March 28, 1935 in Poplar, North Carolina to Sidney and Flossie Peterson, and was the second of four children.
the U.S Navy at the tender age of 16. He served his country well and retired after 20 years as a chief petty officer on Nuclear submarines.

Curley married the love of his life, Barbara Ann McKinney in Erwin, TN on June 4, 1954. They were married for 61 years when his beloved wife passed away. They had two children.

After retiring from the Navy in 1971, Curley moved his family from Charleston, SC to Johnson City, TN to be close to immediate family. While working full time, Curley entered college and graduated with a BS degree in accounting. He spent the remainder of his working career as an accountant. When Curley retired, he enjoyed woodworking and gardening with his wife. His faith and family meant everything to him. He was a faithful, humble servant and served in the capacity of treasurer and deacon in the various churches he attended. Curley was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Johnson City.

Curley was a loving, devoted father to two daughters: Theresa (James) Buchanan, of Petersburg, VA, and Belinda Miller, of Johnson City; and a very proud grandfather to one granddaughter, Kaitlin Miller. He was a very loving brother to Malone, Phyllis, and the late, Nella Jane, several nieces and nephews also survive.

Curley was preceded in death by his parents, Sidney and Flossie Peterson, his wife Barbara, and his sister, Nella Jane. He will be fondly remembered by family and friends as a gentle, humble, selfless, kind, Godly man, who loved his faith, family, and country.

The family will greet friends to share memories in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 from 4:00 pm until a Celebration of Life Service at 6:00 PM with Pastor Phil Graeber and Pastor Randy Griffith officiating. 4674 JOHNSON CITY - Daisy Lee Walters, 93, Johnson City went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday, March 22, 2022 in the NHC Health Care Center of Johnson City. She was a native of Jonesborough and was a daughter of the late Lawrence and Elizabeth Denny Livingston. Mrs. Walters retired from the Johnson City Medical Center where she had worked as a Respiratory Therapist. She was a founding member of Trinity Baptist Church of Jonesborough where she had taught the Challenger Class for many years.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Darrell Walters in 1978; a daughter, Donna K. Archer; two brothers, George M. Livingston and Claude Livingston and a sister, Violet Blackburn and a half -brother, Blane “Bill” Livingston.
Survivors include her children, Sharon Walters Bower and her husband, Randy of Lynchburg, VA, Denny L. Walters and his wife, Amy of Somerset, KY and Gordon W. 4675 JOHNSON CITY - Dalene Crowe Bowman, age 87, of Johnson City, TN, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at her residence. She was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Samuel Franklin Crowe and Virginia Smith Crowe. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward Crowe, Samuel Crowe, and Gary Crowe; and one sister, Betty Lois Garren.

Dalene was a 1954 graduate of ETSU Training School. She married Joe Lynn Bowman on December 11, 1955. Together they joined hands and began a wonderful life together as in 1959 they founded Modern Equipment Company which was a local Farm and Construction Machinery Dealer in Johnson City, Greeneville and Abingdon and ran it until retirement in 2006. She was a member of North Johnson City Baptist Church where she served as head of the flower decorating committee, was a member of the choir and a children’s Sunday school teacher. She helped on the family farm, Bowman Dairy, that she and her husband had from 1980 until 1990.

She loved traveling in the motorhome and spending winters in Florida. She enjoyed singing karaoke and country music as well loved playing the piano. Dalene loved the beach vacations and the annual trips to the Amish County in Ohio. To her husband, she was the wife of the century and to her children she was the mother of the year.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Joe Lynn Bowman; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald Bowman, David Bowman and wife Liz, Eddie Bowman and wife Robin, and Stephen Bowman and wife Kim; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bonnie C. Hathaway.

The family will receive friends Monday, May 22, 2023 from 12:00PM until 1:00PM at Monte Vista Funeral Home. Funeral Service will follow at 1:00PM with Pastor Rick Powell officiating.

4676 JOHNSON CITY - Dallis Edward Ragan, age 86 of Johnson City, Tennessee passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2019 in the Johnson City Medical Center.

He was a son of the late Earnest and Della Ottinger Ragan, born to them on November 17, 1932 in Johnson City, Tennessee. Dallis was a member of the Gravel Hill Baptist Church and attended Knob Creek Church of the Brethren. He united in marriage to Mary Sue Dugger and to this union, four loving children were born. He enjoyed watching races, working in his flower gardens and most of all, he enjoyed rocking in his rocking chair on his front porch.

Along with his parents, Dallis is preceded in death by two brothers: Ulyss Ragan and Ivis Ragan; One sister: Viola Hammitt; and his son: Jeff Ragan.

He is survived by his loving wife: Mary Sue Ragan; His children: Ron Ragan (Lisa), Jimmy (Freda) and Debbie Harris (Ricky); His grandchildren: Joshua, Jamie, Nikki, Brandon, Brittany, Corey, Whitney and Brian; His great-grandchildren: Bentley, Kylah, Lilli, Shannon, Damien, Evan, Owen and Raelynn.

4677 JOHNSON CITY - Dana Myrl Peters, age 84, of Johnson City, Tennessee went home to join his beloved wife on Monday, December 12, 2022 from the Johnson City Medical Center. Dana was born September 5, 1938 in Butler, Tennessee to the late Willard Spencer Peters and Winnie Mae (Robinson) Peters. In addition to his parents, Dana was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Geraldine (Blevins) Peters; and a sister, Betty (Peters) Lewis.

Dana had been employed as a truck driver in the construction business. He was a loving brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved fishing and carpentry work. Most of all Dana loved his family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Those left to cherish Dana’s memory include his children, Greg (Wendy) Peters and Angela (Joey) Suder; his grandchildren, Amanda Lopez, Jason Peters, Austin Peters, Justin Suder, Lindsey Suder, and Lauren Suder; his great grandchildren, Ava Lopez, Adrian Lopez, Christian Peters, and Kourtnee Peters; four brothers and sisters; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Danie was a native of Burnsville, NC. He was a son of the late Dewey and Nancy Rambo Lewis.

Danie was a US Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. He had worked at Memorial Hospital, as a truck driver and mechanic, and most recently as a school bus driver.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Harrell Guinn Lewis; daughter, Linda K. Lewis; and several brothers.

Survivors include his daughter, Danette L. He was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City and was a son of Mary Ellen Moody of Jonesborough and the late Fred T. Moody. Darrell was a self-employed painter. He attended Dry Creek Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son Brandon Hartsook.
Survivors include his mother, Mary Ellen Tolley Moody of Jonesborough; his children, Dustin Britt of Johnson City, Tammy Sue Peters, of Jonesborough, Heather Carver and husband, Daniel of Jonesborough and Teddy Hartsook and wife, Melissa of Kingsport; two brothers, Gary Moody and wife, Vickie and Andrew Moody all of Johnson City; a sister, Vicky Lee Moody of Johnson City; eight grandchildren; also several nieces and nephews.

4680 JOHNSON CITY - David Wayne Royston, age 57, of Johnson City, TN, passed away on, February 1, 2018, after a lengthy illness.

David was born in Johnson City, TN on January 11, 1961, to the late Floyd and Gladys Shell Royston. He worked for Gene Cox Mechanical Contractors as a plumber/pipefitter for 29 years. David was a member of The Fraternal Order of the Moose Lodge in Johnson City, as well as the Johnson City Elks Lodge #825. He loved playing golf, spending time with family and friends and going to "our" place at New Smyrna Beach.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by one brother, Steve Royston, sister-in-law, Debbie Royston and father-in-law, James Brown. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 10 years, Jan Brown Royston, one son, Wesley Royston and his mother Victoria Click, two brothers, Harold and Allen Royston, two sisters, Brenda (Will) Cole and Teresa Keller, two step-sons, Nathan (Stephanie) and Forrest Gentry, grandchildren, Russell, Aleena, Chloe, Xavier, and Evelyn, mother-in-law, Amy Brown and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was a daughter of the late Clarence William and Mary Lee Royston Grindstaff. Debbie was a former clerk at Stockpot. She attended Snow Memorial Baptist Church. Survivors include: three sons and two daughters-in-law, Grant and Karey Garland of Blountville, Travis Richardson of Henning and Toby and Pam Richardson of Elizabethton; a sister, Clara "Susie" Grindstaff of Johnson City; two brothers, Marvin and Mike Grindstaff both of Telford; five grandchildren, Paige Garland, Coby Garland, Elijah Garland, Jeremiah Richardson and Aryan Richardson; her aunt, Lillian Royston and several cousins.

4683 JOHNSON CITY - Delmas I. "Doug" Dugger, 85, Johnson City, passed away Wednesday, August 23, 2017.

He was a native of Old Butler in Johnson County and had resided in Washington County since 1959. He was the son of the late Daniel B. Dugger and Dessie McKinnis Dugger.

He attended Watauga Academy in Old Butler and graduated from Johnson County High School. He attended Berea College, Berea, KY, and graduated from East Tennessee State University with a BS Degree in Chemistry and received a MS in Physical Chemistry. He was employed as a Physical Chemist in the Physics Research Laboratory at Beaunit Corp. in Elizabethton for eight years, and retired from Tennessee Eastman Chemical Co. as a Senior Development Chemist after 28 years of service with the company.

He was an active member of North Johnson City Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon, and in several leadership capacities, such as Supt. Of Sunday School, Board of Directors, Personnel Committee, By-Laws Committee and others. He enjoyed working on his lawn and was an avid gardener for many years.

He served in the U.S. Army in the Counter Intelligence. He was a member of the American Chemical Society since 1963. He was on the steering committee at Tri City Technical School to develop a chemistry curriculum, and later taught Analytical Chemistry during the early stages of the program.

He is survived by: his loving wife of 58 years, Wanda Blevins Dugger; one sister, Jacqueline Taylor, of Elizabethton; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Louise Jackson.

Delores was born in Monroe, MI to the late Frank and Helen Mominee.

She was a member of King Springs Baptist Church and was very active until recently when sickness prevented her from attending. Delores retired from Levi Strauss in 1989 and was still in touch with friends she made there.

Momma was a very special lady who loved her Lord and her family above all else. She was a friend to all and would lend a helping hand to anyone in need and help in any way she could. Until we meet again, we love you, Momma.

4686 JOHNSON CITY - Donald Ray Barnette, age 82, of Johnson City entered into heavenly rest at Life Care Center of Gray on January 5, 2018 following a lengthy illness.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Nathaniel and Lillian Light Barnette, and younger brother James T. (Jimmy) in 2015. Upon graduation from Rogersville High School, Don joined the army in 1954; he enjoyed tours of duty stateside as well as in Germany. After his discharge in 1957, he attended East Tennessee State College. For several years, he was a teacher in the Hawkins County School System. He later earned an Associate of Arts degree (Business) from Steed College in Johnson City. The majority of his career was spent in management positions in the restaurant and food industry.

She was the daughter of Hugh Edward Walker and the late Lena Kate Morefield Walker, born to them on August 2, 1960 in Mountain City, Tennessee. On June 16, 1978 she united in marriage to Jim Cooper and they had two loving daughters. She was a member of By-Faith Freewill Baptist Church of Johnson City. She greatly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and her family, attending church, scrapbooking and cooking.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Kate Walker; Sister, Debbie Brown; Brother, Bill Walker; Father-in-law; Rev. Roy Cooper; Brother-in-law Raymond Sutphin and a niece, Robin Michelle.

Doris was a member of Southwestern Baptist Church. She loved her family, especially her granddaughters.

In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Louise Dockery and Donna Gail McInturff, two infant brothers, Ralph and James McInturff.

Doris enjoyed going to church and listening to gospel music. She mostly loved spending time with her family.

4690 JOHNSON CITY - Doris Marie Davis, 91, of Johnson City, TN went home to be with the Lord Jesus Christ on Thursday, August 5, 2021. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing.

Doris was a loving devoted mother and grandmother to her family. She was a long time member of Grace Fellowship Church in Johnson City. She was employed by Forbes Airforce Base and Santa Fe Railroad in Topeka, KS as well as Summers Hardware in Johnson City. She finished her career at East Tennessee State University, Quillen College of Medicine.

Survivors include her four daughters Denise Kerney, Janelle Grooms and husband Ronald, Elizabeth Davis, Donna Gage and husband John; daughter-in-law Karen Davis, eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death are her parents John and Evelyn McClanahan, son Roger Lynn Davis, son-in-law Tom Kerney, four brothers Dale, Denver, Francis and Minnis, and two sisters Anna Ruth and Marge.

Doris loved spending time with her family, reading the Bible, singing gospel hymns, flower gardening, cooking, and was an excellent seamstress.

4691 JOHNSON CITY - Dorothy Baird Carpenter of Johnson City, died Friday morning, September 16, 2016, at Asbury Place, Kingsport. She was born in Elizabethton, TN on April 30, 1932 and was the daughter of the late Ralph and Maudene Nave Baird. She grew up in the Central Community and graduated from Happy Valley High School in 1950.

After graduating from East Tennessee State College, she began her career in education as a teacher/librarian at Washington College Academy. She earned a Masters Degree from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University and became a librarian at Lees McRae College and later King College. On a federally funded fellowship, she did post-graduate work at the University of Minnesota. She became a library educator at Appalachian State University. After 19 years, she retired from ETSU as an associate professor.

Mrs. Carpenter was active in the library education association until her retirement. She was a member of the Johnson City Monday Club and the P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Clayton L. Carpenter, in 2001; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and James P. Hayes, Jr.; and niece, Cheryl L. Hayes.

Dorothy is survived by her stepdaughter, LTC. Patricia Schiefer, USAFR (ret) of San Antonio, TX; grandson, Dr. Matthew A. Schiefer and wife, Dr. Marjorie Montanez of Cleveland, Ohio; niece Bobbie Phillips and husband, Dennis of Kingsport; nephew, James (Jay) Hayes of Kingsport; grand-nephew, James Phillips and wife, Crystal of Kingsport; and grand-nephew, Evan Hayes of Kingsport.

4694 JOHNSON CITY - Dr. Carroll R. Hyder, age 77, Johnson City, passed away Friday, April 5, 2019 at Select Specialty Hospital in Bristol.

A native of Johnson City, he was the son of the late Daughton and Stella Moody Hyder.

He was a member of Boones Creek Christian Church.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jimmie Ann Leonard Hyder, Johnson City; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher Todd & Jennifer Hyder, Johnson City; two special grandsons, James Hyder and Patrick Hyder; one brother and sister-in-law, Norman & Barbara Hyder, Maryland; sister-in-law, Patsy Johnson and husband Richard, Johnson City; three nieces and one nephew.

He graduated from Boones Creek High School in 1959. In 1967 he received his B.S. and also his M.A. from East Tennessee State University in Industrial Technology. In 1971 he received his PH.D. from The Ohio State University in Industrial Technology and Research Statistics.

Dr. Hyder served four years in the United Sates Air Force at Barksdale Air Force Base in LA. He was a Photo Intelligence Photogrammetry and Cartographic. His unit was presented the Presidential Unit Citation. He was affiliated with scientific, professional and civic organizations: Associated General Contractors of America, East Tennessee Associated General Contractors, National Association of Home Builders, Johnson City Area Home Builders, Syndication, American Vocational Association, and Epsilon Pi Tau, International Honorary Fraternity, and Kiwanis Clubs International. He also had Professional License US Security and Exchange Commission Series 22 and US Security and Exchange Commission Series 63.

Dr. Hyder was Associate Dean and Professor at East Tennessee State University. He was Dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology at E.T.S.U. and Chairman of Department of Technology at E.T.S.U. He was Associate Professor and Coordinator of Construction Technology program, Vocational Teachers program, and graduate program. He was also at the center for Vocational and Technical Education, Research Associate with primary focus in program evaluation and Career Education and Highway Safety Projects. At E.T.S. U. he helped develop the Gray Fossil Site. He was also instrumental in Digital Media at the University.

He loved to play golf and took many trips with friends to play.

Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 pm Monday, April 8, 2019 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Mr. Michael H. Freeman officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Monday prior to the service.

4695 JOHNSON CITY - Dr. Nat Edens "Ed" Hyder, Jr. M.D., 86, Johnson City, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Pine Ridge Care & Rehab Center. Dr. Hyder was born in Hampton on March 14, 1929. He started high school at Hampton High School and graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1946. He attended Milligan College before joining the Army in June of 1947 after serving as a clerk and medic in the army he enrolled at East Tennessee State College to earn a B.S. degree in Chemistry. He also certified to teach at that time. He went on to attend and graduate from University of Tennessee College of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine Degree in June of 1954.

Dr. Hyder practiced medicine until 2009. He served in Knoxville, TN, Tazewell, VA, Lallie Kemp Charity Hospital in Louisiana, worked in Medical Management of Radiation Accidents at Oak Ridge, also practicing in Chatom, AL, Erwin, TN, Johnson City, TN and with Rural Health Consortium at the Bluff City Clinic and his last several years at the Dry Creek Clinic in Erwin, TN.

During his career Dr. Hyder also served several communities, the State of Tennessee and his nation in many capacities. He was a longtime Railroad Physician with CSX. He served as a Nuclear Medical Consultant and Plant Physician at Nuclear Fuel Services at various times from 1970 until 1992.

He has served as president of the Erwin Civitan Club, the Erwin Community Chest and United Way, as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Erwin YMCA. He is a member of Mountain View Baptist Church and has also served as Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Chatom, AL; First Christian Church in Erwin and the First Baptist Church in Erwin

In 1968 Dr. Hyder volunteered through a program with the American Medical Association to go to Vietnam as a civilian doctor treating Vietnamese civilians alongside Vietnamese nurses. There he performed many surgeries as he also treated the wounded. It was also a common occurrence that at night he would have to leave his quarters and go to the bunkers because of mortar attacks.

Dr. Hyder has served in many other capacities. In 1971 he was appointed by the Governor to the Tennessee Public Health Council, serving as secretary in 1976 and 1977. He was president of the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians in 1972. In 1974 he was named Family Physician of the Year for the state of Tennessee. He is a past delegate to the AMA. He served as president of the Tennessee Medical Association in 1983.

Dr. Hyder has also served in various positions with the James H. Quillen College of Medicine through ETSU; he stood as Acting Director of the Johnson City Family Practice Residency Program, a member of the Dean's Council and Admissions Committee, Associate Professor in the Department of Family Practice and assistant Dean and Director of Medical Education at the Johnson City Medical Center.

In addition to his community support Dr. Hyder has served his country through the military in several capacities. In 1975 he joined the Medical Corps in the United States Army Reserve. He was promoted to Colonel in 1978. He became Commander of the 912th Combat Support Hospital in 1982. In 1985 he became the Commander of the 332nd Medical Brigade, leading over 150 Army Reserve Units in the USA. Before retiring he served as commander over 377th Combat Support Hospital and then transferred to 662 Medical Detachment of the National Guard. Though he retired from the National Guard in 1995 he later joined the National Defense Force Service Command, a part of Homeland Security. Here he has served as Brigadier General, Major General and Lieutenant General.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Hyder was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Hurst Hyder; one son, Paul Marshall Hyder; two grandsons, Nason Michael Hopkins and J. Keith Hyder; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Hyder and a sister, June Evelyn Hyder Walsh.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Gretchen E. Byrd and her husband, Travis S. Byrd; sons, Nat E. Hyder, III and his wife Sherri, Michael Allen Hyder and his wife Robin; grandchildren, Ashley Elizabeth Garst and her husband Chris, Nathaniel E. Hyder, IV and his wife Tiffany, Heidi Leigh Sutphin, Heather Blackburn and her husband Nathan and Whitney K. Harris; granddaughter-in-law Elka Hyder; great-grandchildren, Aubrey J. Sutphin, Autumn R. Hyder, Aaron C. Arnold, Zack R. Blackburn, Bryson L. Hyder, Kelton M. Hyder, N. Edens Hyder V, Noah E. Hyder, Blake T. Blackburn, Julianne K. Sutphin and Erik J. Sutphin; one sister, L. Gretchen Hyder Fortune; his angels and special caregivers, Lori Shepherd and Betty Fields; special friends, Jackie Ringersma and Becky Jones; and many numerous friends and colleagues.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all of Dr. Hyder's caregivers over the years, Courtyard Senior Living and Pine Ridge Rehab & Care for the loving care they provided to Dr. Hyder.

Paul practiced Pharmacy for 50 years. He started three local businesses: Corner Drug, West Towne Pharmacy and Princeton Drug. He was a Specialist 5th Class US Army veteran, having served from 1953-1956, during the Korean conflict. Paul was an avid Cardinals baseball fan, mainly because he was named after Paul Dean, the pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals the year they won the World Series, in 1934, the day Paul was born. He was a member of The Gideons International, First District Pharmaceutical Association and Tennessee Pharmaceutical Association. He was a past member of Pinecrest Baptist Church and a present member of Grace Baptist Church, where he was a choir director for many years.

In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by: his wife of 59 years, Helen Jean Renfro, in 2015; and one brother-in-law, Jerome Christian.

Survivors include: two sons, Larry S. 4698 JOHNSON CITY - Earl Randall Edmondson Sr., 81, Johnson City, entered into rest Saturday, May 14, 2016 at his residence.

Mr. Edmondson was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County.

He was a son of the late Clay E. Edmondson and Beulah Heaton Edmondson and was also preceded in death by a son, Earl Randall Edmondson Jr., two sisters and five brothers.

Mr. Edmondson was retired from ETSU after 28 years of service

He was a member of Arcana Masonic Lodge # 489, Limestone, TN.

Mr. Edmondson enjoyed watching western movies and was a very talented wood worker.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 22 years, Sarah J. Butler Edmondson; daughters, Teresa Edmondson, Robin D. Hill, Holly R. Absher and her husband, Larry; son, Christopher Story; sister, Carolyn Baird; granddaughter, Olivia Absher; grandsons, Jacob Absher, Teddy Presnell, Willis Freeman, Grant Freeman and J.R. Presnell; several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

The family will greet guests and share memories from 6-8 pm Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services, Johnson City. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 8 pm with Reverend Bobby Miller officiating. Music will be provided by the Dry Creek Singers. 4699 JOHNSON CITY - Earnest Ferrell Bowman, 84 went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Sunday night, August 4, 2019, at his home.

Earnest was born on July 28, 1935, in Johnson City, TN, to John Frank Bowman and the late Dorothy Randolph Bowman.

A native of Johnson City, TN, Earnest lived in the Tri-Cities area for the most part of his life. In 1954 he graduated of Science Hill and attended ETSU where he was an athlete and played ball for 14 years. Earnest Ferrell Bowman played Baseball for the San Francisco Giants from 1961 to 1963 and played in the 1962 World Series.

Mr. Earnest Ferrell Bowman was of the Baptist Faith. His special hobbies was that he enjoyed golf and enjoyed helping Children.

Aside from his father, John Frank Bowman and his mother Dorothy Randolph Bowman those left to cherish his memory is his wife 47 years Magdalene Norris Bowman. Surviving Daughter: Lisa Novalsky. Surviving Sons: John Ferrell Bowman. Surviving Sisters: Helen Arwood and her husband J.F Arwood. Surviving Brothers: Billy Joe Bowman, Charlie Bowman and Becky, Kenneth Wayne Bowman. Four Grandchildren Emily, Britany, Thomas and Rachel. And also several Nieces and Nephews.

The family will be receiving friends and family on Thursday August 8, 2019, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Memorial Service will be at 8:00 PM at Snyder's Memorial Gardens located at 5913 Kingsport Highway, Gray, TN 37615. Officiating Pastor Travis Tyler.

The Grave Side service will be on Friday August 9, 2019 at 11:00 AM at Snyders Memorial Gardens.

4700 JOHNSON CITY - Ed Whitehead, 90. Johnson City, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021 at the Hillview Health Center. He was born December 24, 1930, in Hampton to the late Henry & Lucy Morton Whitehead. He was a 1949 graduate of Hampton High School. Ed served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired truck driver. He formerly worked at ETWNC and Jones Truck Line. He loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Narvel & Louis Whitehead and two sisters: Crystal Johnson and Hazel Malone.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years: Shirley Simerly Whitehead. One Daughter & Son-In-Law: Deborah & David Shankle of Johnson City. Two Grandchildren: David E. (Victoria) Shankle and Daniel (Ashley) Shankle. Three Great Grandchildren: David R., Emma and Edmund. Several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with his Nephew Pastor Greg Whitehead officiating, also assisting is Pastor Chuck Babb. Graveside Service will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 29, 2021 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary Pallbearers will be his church family. Military Honors will be provided by VFW Post 2108.
