4451 Jerry A. Fulkerson, 71, prominent farmer of the Pactolus section, died Thursday at 9:10 a.m. at his home. He had been an invalid for 11 years.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Kendrick's Creek Church, of which Mr. Fulkerson was a member. The Rev. R.L. Light, pastor, will officiate.

Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Minnie Moody Fulkerson and one daughter, Miss Mary Grace Fulkerson, both of Pactolus; a son, Paul Fulkerson, and three grandchildren, all of Litz Manor, Kingsport. One sister, Mrs. Luke Ratliff of Sullivan Gardens, and one brother, John Fulkerson of Chestnut Ridge, also survive.

The body will remain at the Hamlet-Dobson Funeral Home until Friday afternoon, when it will be removed to the home to await the hour of service.

4452 Jerry Allen "Boog" Arnett, 69, of Johnson City, died Monday, February 9, 2015 at his home.

He was a Washington County native and was a son of the late Edward and Virginia Swanner Arnett.

Jerry was a retired sheet metal worker.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Faye Arnett, and two brothers, James and Wallace Arnett.

Survivors include: two daughters, Kim Miller, and her husband Philip, and Renee Arnett; three sons, Timmy Arnett, and his wife Sue, Neil Arnett, and Mark Arnett; and 13 grandchildren.

The family of Jerry Arnett will receive friends from 11:30 am until 12:30 pm Thursday, February 12, 2015 in Morris-Baker Funeral Home. Following the visitation, family and friends will proceed to Monte Vista Memorial Park for a 1 pm graveside service. Pallbearers will be: Philip Miller, Carl Miller, T. J. Arnett, Philip Miller, Mike Doyle, and Billy Napier.

4453 Jerry Allen Cress, 57, of Mountain City, passed away on Thursday, May 27, 2021 at his home. He was born on November 3, 1963 to the late Allen Cress and Peggy Ward Cress in Carter County, TN. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Jeffrey Allen Cress. Jerry was a friend to everyone and would do anything to help anyone. He enjoyed traveling and enjoyed life. Jerry was a proud Daddy and Grandfather.

Those left to cherish his memories include his sister, Donna Lipford and husband Richard of Conover, NC; son, Shelby Cress and wife Shelbi of Ripley, TN; grandson, Brody Cress; one nephew, Dawson Cress of Mountain City, TN; one niece, Jennifer Hawkins and husband Mike of Hickory, NC and several Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins and several special friends.

It was Jerry’s request to be cremated and no formal service will be held.

4454 Jerry Gale McGuire, age 72, of Elk Park passed away on August 23, 2016.

A native of Avery County, NC, he was born December 21, 1943 a son of the late Clinton Hurst and Addie Mae McGuire.

He was a longtime member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church where he sung in the choir in his youth.

Jerry worked as an Substance Abuse Counselor with New River Mental Health and also at the University Hospital in Augusta, GA.

He enjoyed computers, geneology and watching westerns on TV.

Along with his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his: brother, Gene Allen McGuire; son-in-law, Christopher Thomas Burke.

Jerry has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Marilyn O. McGuire of the home; daughter, Tonya Burke of Vidalia, GA.; sons, Clinton McGuire and wife Kathy of Conyers, GA., Stephen McGuire and wife Stacie of Appling, GA., Phillip McGuire and wife Kim of Augusta, GA.; brothers, Reed McGuire and wife Marjorie of Aiken, SC., Wendell McGuire and wife Meta of Elk Park, NC.; 11 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Jerry Gale McGuire will be conducted on Saturday, August 27th at 2:00 p.m. in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Pastor Richard Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the Beech Mountain Cemetery.

4455 Jerry Lee Bowers, 77, of Elizabethton, lovingly and peacefully went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 20, 2019, at his home following a brief illness. A native of Elizabethton, Jerry was the son of the Haskel and Bonnie Bowers. A "Forever Cyclone", Jerry was a 1961 graduate of Elizabethton High School, where he still enjoyed attending basketball and football games. Once an energetic basketball official himself, he truly loved showing his school and community pride whether it be through donning an Elizabethton ball cap or simply talking about the Covered Bridge. Also known for his devout patriotism, Jerry served in the United States Air Force and embraced being a United States Veteran with honor. After attending business college, he worked for both American Air Filter for eighteen years and then at Tennessee Distribution Center until his early retirement. While enjoying "retirement", he rarely missed breakfast with his crew at McDonalds or Betty's Burger Hut, where biscuits and gravy were always on the menu. Jerry also kept himself busy with the business he shared with his brothers, Bowers Auto Sales, where the door was always open for a good deal on a vehicle or for a quick afternoon chat and nap. He spent much of his life playing golf, going on vacations and spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who was rarely seen without a smile on his face and who was never short on both kind words and warm hugs. Jerry was an active member at Hunter United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees that benefited the church and the community. He also was member of the Carter County Equalization Board where he continued to make a difference in the lives of those around him. Jerry met the love of his life, Marilyn Sibley Bowers, while serving in the United States Air Force in Warner Robins, Georgia. For 53 years, their love and devotion to one another has remained a constant source of inspiration for the family that they created together. Jerry's legacy incudes three daughters, Mrs. Lynn (Otis) Webb of Blountville; Mrs. Debbie (Chris) Guy of Elizabethton; Mrs. Becky (Rodney) McBride of Burlison; two brothers, Mr. Tony M. (Linda) Bowers and Mr. R.J. Bowers, all of Elizabethton; three grandsons Mr. Logan Guy of Elizabethton and Mr. Garrison McBride and Mr. Jackson McBride of Burlison; two granddaughters, Ms. Ashlynn Guy of Elizabethton and Ms. Madison McBride of Burlison and one aunt, Ms. Darlene Smith of Elizabethton. 4456 Jerry Lee Harmon, 67, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, January 2, 2015, at his residence.
A native of Avery County, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Bronskey William and Edna Elaine Trivette Harmon. He had lived most of his life in Carter County.
Prior to his illness, he was employed by the Dana Corporation, and also was a car salesman. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam Era.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Judy Elaine Keever, and a brother John Harmon. Jerry attended Beck Mountain Baptist Church.
Survivors include Two Daughters: Jennifer Harmon and Keisha Harmon both of Elizabethton. Three Grandchildren: Kiley and Kinsley McInturff and Axxl Debnam. Three Sisters: Retha Franklin and Dorothy Dupuis both of Morganton, North Carolina and Frances Isabelle, Unicoi. One Brother: Ronnie "Donnie" Harmon. Connelly Springs, NC. Several nieces & nephews.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2015, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Rev Dean Presnell officiating. Interment will follow in the Harmon Cemetery, Butler. 4457 Jerry Leonard Potter, 75, of Elk Park, N.C., joined God's Army on Thursday, May 27th, 2021 at his home.

He was the youngest son of the late John H. and Stella Turbyfill Potter. He was also preceded in death by his brothers: William Potter and Plez Potter; sisters: Lillie Belle Clawson, Lucille Holtsclaw and Cassie Bruton and special sister-in-law, Tiny Church.

Jerry enjoyed farming and was a fowl enthusiast. He loved his family and their adopted kids. He gathered them like the Pied Piper. Jerry was a U.S. Army Veteran who loved his country. He fought a good fight and is at peace with God now.

Left to cherish his memories is his wife of 53 years, Carolyn Potter of Elk Park; sons, Jon (April) Potter of Newland, Jerry Jr. "Tater" Potter of Elk Park; granddaughter, Candice Potter of Hampton, TN; grandson, Jon Jon Potter of Roan Mountain, TN; foster grandson, Bryson Calhoun, and great-grandson and apple of his eye, Mason Gleiser; sisters, Choy Davis of Elk Park, Ruth Hanson of Roan Mountain, TN, and Hazel Carpenter of Hickory.

A private burial will be held but no services per his request.

4458 Jerry M. "Dude" Tolley, 76, 214 Possum Hollow Road, Gray passed away Sunday, May 24, 2015, at his residence.
He was a lifetime resident of Washington County and was a son of the late William and Sudie Mae Carroll Tolley. Mr. Tolley was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Johnson City. He was a selfemployed painter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Jo Hall; and a brother, Bill Tolley.
Survivors include his loving wife, Jewel Hopson Tolley; a daughter, Lori Stout and husband, Jack, of Johnson City; two sons, Bill Tolley and wife, Marlene, of Jonesborough, and Jerry Tolley and wife, Joann, of Strasburg, VA; three sisters, Lyndoll Williams, of Johnson City, Patsy Byrd and husband, Allen, of Florida, and Mary Moody, of Johnson City; a brother, Sam Tolley, of Johnson City; four grandchildren, Madison and Jarrett Tolley, of Johnson City, and Logan and Jake Tolley, of Winchester, VA; a greatgrandson, Breylon Tolley; several stepgrandchildren; also several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Tolley will be conducted at 7:00 PM Wednesday, May 27, 2015, at Grace Baptist Church, 612 Collins Drive, Johnson City, with Rev. Mike Pelham and Pastor Bryan Smith officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church from 5:00 PM until the service hour.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, May 28, 2015, in the Washington County Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Jarrett Tolley, Jack Stout, Daniel Hopson, Chipper Hopson, Chad Nelson, Josh Callahan and Jake Tolley. For those attending this service you are asked to meet at Woodall Anderson and Dugger Funeral Home by 10:30 AM to go in procession to the cemetery.
The family wishes to give special thanks to Grace Baptist Church, Dr. Vicente and staff of the Regional Cancer Center and to Dr. Abkus and staff of the Ear, Nose and Throat of Johnson City for the wonderful care and compassion they provided Mr. Tolley and the family.

4459 Jerry Minks, age 77, of Elizabethton, Tennessee and formerly of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at the Life Care Center of Elizabethton following a lengthy illness. He was born on November 11, 1940 to the late Jason and Nina Tester Minks.

It was Jerry's wishes to be cremated and that no funeral service is held.

4460 Jerry Oswald Mottern, 72, of Elizabethton, died Thursday, July 28, 2022, at his residence, 416 Peach Tree Lane. He was a native of Elizabethton and a son of the late Fred and Hassie Mottern.
Jerry was retired from Summers-Taylor Construction where he was a truck driver. He was an avid hunter and angler who loved to be outdoors.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Judy Davis, Nora Carver and Virginia Morgan.
Survivors include his sister, Faye (Wayne) Ingram; brothers, Terry (Karen) Mottern; four nephews and several cousins.
Jerry did not want any memorial services held.

Born July 6, 1943, in Roan Mt., Tenn., he was the son of the late Zeno and Georgia Mae Vines Black. Mr. Black is survived by his wife, Vina Ruff Black; four sons, Eric Black, Bill Watkins, Randy Watkins, Larry Wike; two daughters, Jenny Black, Linda Wike; three brothers, Zeno Black Jr., Danny Black, Jim Black; two sisters, Stella Issac, Carolyn Bunton; two granddaughters; three nieces and eight nephews. The funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. today, Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010, at Smarts Grove Baptist Church, with the Pastor Charles Lewis officiating. 4462 Jerry Thomas Clawson, 74, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, October 1, 2021, while in his home.
He was born on September 8, 1947, in Avery County, N.C., to the late Russell V. Clawson Sr. and Myrtle N. Ward Clawson.
Jerry gave his life to Christ as a young man and spent the rest of his life sharing the gospel to bring others to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. He preached his last sermon on the 23rd Psalm from his front porch two weeks before he passed. Jerry served as pastor of Walking by Faith Community Church until his last breath.
Jerry’s vocation was building houses and making improvements to peoples’ homes. He loved “tinkering” with cars and working with his hands.
He was preceded in death by his father, Russell V. Clawson Sr.; his mother, Myrtle N. Ward Clawson; his brother, Russell V. Clawson Jr.; and his sister, Wanda C. (Tina) Clawson.
Left to cherish fond memories are his wife of 35 years, Karin L. Clawson; daughter, Mechelle L. Carter and husband Jeff of Limestone, and daughter, Laura A. Byrd and husband Julian of Grand Island, Fla.; granddaughter, Chelsea I. Ricker and husband Brennan of Johnson City; granddaughter, Linsey I. Way and husband Dakota of Rogersville; grandson, Miles R. Byrd of Shelby, N.C.; great-grandchildren, Mayland Ricker and Emmett Way; sister, Judy Carpenter and husband Charles of Newland, N.C.; sister, Janice Horney of Banner Elk, N.C.; brother in-law, Terry W. 4463 Jerry Thomas Sutherland, age 65, of Mountain City, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 2, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Mountain City, TN September 6, 1953 to the late Buster Sutherland and Mae (Trivette) Sutherland. In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by two brothers, Carrol "Pudge" Sutherland and Jack Sutherland.

Jerry was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Laurel Bloomery, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He also loved bluegrass gospel music and enjoyed singing in the church choir. He spent 41 years working as a surface miner in the coal fields of West Virginia. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He cherished Sunday family dinners. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his favorite teams, the Atlanta Braves and the Tennessee Volunteers.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 46 years, Cathy Sutherland; brother, Joe Sutherland and wife Lena; sister-in-law, Georgia Sutherland; children, Jeff Sutherland and wife Christina, Blake Sutherland and wife Casey; grandchildren, Allison, Chloe and Adalynn and others that called him "Paw" Brandon, Corbin, and Marissa; niece, Donna Sargent and husband Brian; nephew, David Sutherland and wife Yvonne; great-nephew and great-nieces and many more friends and church family.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, August 5, 2019 at Corinth Baptist Church on Deer Run Rd. in Laurel Bloomery, TN; with the funeral service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Brother Bill Morefield and Brother Sam Lawson officiating. Music will be provided by the Laurel Creek Boys and Donna Sargent. Graveside service and burial will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. from Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. 4465 Jerry was the son of the late Arney Arlen and Winnie Ruth Smith McFall. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, Fred and Ronnie McFall; step-brother Bobby Arnold and step-sisters Frances and Sylvia.

He was a proud veteran of the United States Army.

He retired as the sales representative of Sara Lee Bakery.

Jerry loved being with his family, grandkids, and loved spending time outdoors.

The funeral service was conducted Monday, December 7, 2015, at 7PM in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home. The family received friends Monday evening from 5PM-7PM. The graveside committal service with military honors were conducted Tuesday, December 8, 2015, at 11AM at Monte Vista Memorial Park.

4466 Jerry Wayne Grindstaff, age 74, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Saturday morning, April 22, 2017 from the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

He was the son of the late Robert Earl Grindstaff and Lora Shouse Grindstaff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only daughter, Rachel; his brothers, Tex Grindstaff and Joe Shouse; and one nephew, Robert Grindstaff.

Jerry was born in Carter County and graduated from Elizabethton High School. He was a member of Unaka Baptist Church, where he played the bass guitar. He worked at North American Rayon Corporation in the 3rd Unit until it closed. He had also worked in the DD Twisting, American Air Filter and retired from Snap-On Tools after 20 years of service. Most of all, Jerry will be remembered for the loving husband, father, brother and friend he was and will be missed by all that knew him.

A service to honor the life of Jerry Wayne Grindstaff will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Stephen Greene, Rev. Dennis Wilson and Rev. Walker Roberson, officiating. Music selections by his daughter, Rachel Grindstaff, as well as a solo by his sister, Sheila Nidiffer. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Wednesday; or at the residence at any time.

The graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Tim Elsea, Mickey Rambo, Joe Buckles, Ronnie Heaton, Kirk Carrier, Lanny Peters, Tom Houghton, and Keith Browder. Honorary pallbearers will be the Brotherhood of Unaka Baptist Church, his Sunday School Class Members and Dale Norris. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton at 9:15 AM on Thursday, to go in procession.

Jerry was proud to be an organ and tissue donor.

4467 Jess Brewer, age 76, of Elk Park, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 24th, 2011 at Roan Highlands Nursing Center. A native of Avery County, Jess was a son of the late Grady and Dorothy Winters Brewer and the husband of 54 years to Carolyn Howell Brewer. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Gypsie Lee Jones.

He loved his children and grandchildren and enjoyed life to the fullest. He was a "people person" who loved to hunt, fish, and was an avid outdoorsman who always said he felt closer to God when he was in the woods.

Surviving are his loving wife, Carolyn Howell Brewer; a daughter and special son-in-law; a son; two grandsons; a granddaughter; two sisters and their husbands; and a brother-in-law.

A memorial service was held at 6 p. m. on Monday, November 28th at Lower Shell Creek Christian Church in Roan Mountain, Tennessee.

4468 Jesse Calvin Church enlisted in the service of the United States
at Knoxville in the county of Knox, and State of Tennessee on
02/Feb/1864 as a Corporal promoted to Sergeant 03/Jul/1864 in Company M,
commanded by Captain Gillon O. Collins, in the 13th Regiment of
Tennessee Calvary Volunteers, commanded by Colonel John K. Miller in the
war of 1861 and was honorably discharged on or about 08/Sep/1865, as
will appear by his certificate of discharge which was placed in the
hands of Calvin Coles, Claims agent at Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co., North
Carolina for the purpose of obtaining additional bounty. Feb 1867.
That while in the service aforesaid, and in the line of his duty at the
town of Morristown, in the county of Grainger, and State of Tennessee
on or about 28/Oct/1864 in a charge upon a force of the enemy under
command of the Rebel General Vaughn, his foot having slipped from the
Stirrup he was thrown forward upon the horn of his saddle and he was
seriously injured , and hernia or rupture was produced
.......(illegible) protruding in such a manner as to ...... his whole
system impairing in a great degree his effieiency as a soldier, though
through much suffering he continued in the service until the .... of
the war, and by said injury he is rendered wholly incapable of making a
substinence by manual labor. That since leaving the service he has
resided in Johnson Co., TN and his occupation has been of a farmer.

Census found him in Wilkes Co., NC in 1850. 1860 in Johnson
Co., TN with Martha working as a Farmer. 1870 in Johnson Co. listed
as a Miller $100 personal property(?). In 1880 in Unicoi Co., with
Martha. According to Martha A. Stout Smith, he was a democrat. He
walked with a limp from war injuries. He was buried in Rankin or
Campbell Cemetery, Johnson Co., TN. Miss Eggers was a housekeeper and
Jessie married her after Martha died.

4469 Jesse Clinton Cable, age 75 of Butler, TN, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2020 at his home. Jesse was born on November 4, 1944 to the late Coy Cable and Mae Stout Cable in Carter County, TN. In addition to his parents, Jesse was preceded in death by his brothers, Billy Cable and wife Sharon, Clinton Cable, David Cable all of who were involved in a fatal car accident in 1987. He was also preceded in death by his daughter in law, Kathy Cable and granddaughter, Renee Shore.

Jesse was a veteran of the United States Army. He was also in the restaurant business for many years running the Elk Mills Restaurant. He had a passion for gardening and especially raising beans. Through his life, Jesse made many friends and will be dearly missed by all. He was member of the Stout Hill Church of Christ.

Jesse is survived by his wife of 56 years, Evelyn Potter Cable; daughter, Janet Dugger and husband Brad of Hampton, TN; son, Jeffrey Cable of Hartselle, AL; sister, Cathy Richards of Butler, TN; brother, Kenneth Cable and wife Cindy of Greenville, SC; grandchildren, Audra Gill, Austin Clawson, Jonathan Shore; great grandchildren, Harley Mann, Jessie Myers, Loyd Meyers III, Jared Miller, Jessie Miller, and Jonathan Miller.

The family will receive friends from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 13, 2020 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral service will follow at 5:00 p.m. with Ministers Donnie Cable and Ray Greene officiating. The graveside service and burial will immediately follow the funeral at Sugar Grove Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Austin Clawson, Brad Dugger, Jerry Gill, Jerad Miller, Jonathan Shore, and Jonathan Miller. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Hamad Khan, Dr. Raina Sluder, all friends and extended family. Military honors will be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard.

4470 Jesse H. Jarrett, 85, 184 Jesse Jarrett Road, Roan Mountain, died
Wednesday, January 26, 2000, at Cannon Memorial Hospital, Linville, N.C.,
following a brief illness.
Mr. Jarrett was a native of Carter County and the son of the late
William and Myra Street Jarrett. He was also preceded in death by a
daughter, Barbara Sue Heaton, and four brothers.
Mr. Jarrett was a devoted member of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church
where he served as a deacon and former Adult Sunday School Teacher. He was
the owner of Jarrett's Apple Orchard and a previous member of the Apple
Growers' Association. He served as a former member of the Board of Directors
of the Carter County Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife, Carrie Miller Jarrett, of the home; a son and
daughter-in-law, Harold and Beth Ann Jarrett, Roan Mountain; three daughters
and sons-in-law, Marie and Hubert Hodge, Blountville, Betty and Jim Hughes,
Elizabethton, and Grace and Tom Presnell, Bristol; a sister, Mary Garland,
Roan Mountain; a brother, Earl Jarrett, Knoxville; five grandsons, Gregory
Heaton, Roan Mountain, Jeff Hodge, Raleigh, N.C., Scott Hodge, Bristol, Jim
Hughes and Michael Hughes, both of Elizabethton; three granddaughters, Becky
Emmert, Johnson City, Regina Buck, Roan Mountain, and Denna Shelton, Unicoi;
and four great-grandchildren, Autumn and Amanda Heaton, Emily Hodge and
Brandon Hodge. Several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Zeb Honeycutt,
also survive.

Music will be under the direction of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church Quartet
and Mrs. Denise Hill. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m.

4471 Jesse James Birchfield, of Elizabethton, a wonderful great big beautiful Christian man, who was so loving to everyone, left this earth Tuesday, June 30, 2015, to live with Jesus. He was born July 21, 1931 in Carter County to the late Jesse James and Sudie Graybeal Birchfield.
Mr. Birchfield was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and Duke University. Jesse served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a former teacher and coach at Unaka High School and a retired District Manager with Syntex Pharmaceutical of California. He was a former Professional Football Player and was an official with the Southern Conference of Football.
Jesse was a Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, Chairman of the deacon board, treasurer and choir member of First Free Will Baptist Church for 50 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Vivian Baker and Doris Lawrence; his brother, Robert "D.L." Birchfield; his precious mother-in-law, Georgia Kate Pope; his brothers-in-law, Sonny Hale and Jerry Pope; and sister-in-law, Joy Pope.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Joyce Pope Birchfield; daughter, Dr. Jessica "Katie" Gladstone and husband Bob of Hollywood, Fla.; sister-in-law, Leta Hale, and many special nieces, nephews and cousins; a god child, Tiffany Taylor Jenkins; and his special angel, whom he loved dearly, Judy Carver Deloach.
A service to celebrate the life of Jess Birchfield will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, July 3, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Raymond Amos and the Rev. Preston Sartelle officiating. Music will be by his daughter, Dr. Katie Gladstone, and David Arney. 4472 Jesse Lee Long, 83, of Elizabethton, who was a good man, good husband and good father, passed away Friday, March 8, 2019, at his residence.
A native of Frankfort, Ky., he was a son of the late John and Gertrude Younger Long.
Mr. Long had lived most of his life in Carter County. He served in the United States Army and was employed as a machinist. He attended Caldwell Springs Baptist Church. His hobbies were fishing, camping, woodworking, traveling and he loved his dogs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Smith Long, and a son, Lee Long.
Survivors include two sons, David Long and wife Lori, Elizabethton, and Chris Long, of the home, and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Graveside services for Jesse Lee Long will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, March 15, in the Smith Cemetery (Nave Hollow) with Dr. Bill Duncan and Rev. James Hawk officiating. 4473 Jesse M. Lingerfelt, 81, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 4, 2023, at his home. Jesse was born in Carter County to the late David and Eunice (Asher) Lingerfelt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Lingerfelt. Jesse was a 1962 graduate of Elizabethton High School, where he had played football, basketball and softball. Jesse retired from the United States Army. He was a loyal and devoted member of Trinity Baptist Church of Elizabethton and enjoyed playing for the church league’s fast pitch softball. Jesse enjoyed bowling, UT football and anything to do with the University of Tennessee sports. Above all, Jesse was a family man and loved his family, and they in turn loved him dearly. Those left to remember and cherish Jesse include his wife, Nell Lingerfelt, of the home; four brothers, Randy Lingerfelt, David “Dag” Lingerfelt and Landon Lingerfelt, all of Elizabethton, and Fred Baker Lingerfelt of Johnson City; and four sisters, Peggy Palmer and Valerie Scalf, both of Elizabethton, Gale (Wally) Reyes of Des Moines, Iowa, and Janie Richardson of Johnson City. Several nieces, nephews and friends also survive. A graveside service to honor and celebrate Jesse’s life will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 9, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery (Historic Section) with Dr. James Richardson officiating. 4474 Jesse Victor "Dopey" Osborne, Jr., 60, resident of 299 Smith Street, husband of Leticia Ramirez "Laddie" Osborne died June 24, 2013 at his mother's home.

Born at Ft. Jackson, June 12, 1953, he was a son of Elsie Mae Gilliam Osborne and the late Jesse Victor Osborne.

Dopey was a 1972 graduate of Whitmire High School where he was a proud member of the Beta Club. He attended North Greenville College and was honored to help many friends throughout his life who were studying to receive their South Carolina GED.

He was formerly employed in commercial and residential construction and also had worked as a Mill Wright.

Dopey loved to prepare and serve BBQ, but his greatest passion was helping friends and family. His love, generosity and compassion have been shared with many and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was of the Pentecostal faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife of thirty years of the home and his mother of Whitmire are a daughter, Carly Maude Osborne; and a son, Jesse Victor "Jesus" Osborne, III, both of the home; one brother, Dan "Boone" Osborne and wife Ruth Ann of Mountain City, TN; one sister, Kelly Osborne of Whitmire; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:00 PM at Whitmire Pentecostal Holiness Church with Reverend Eddie Duncan and Reverend Tony Dickert officiating. Burial will follow in Whitmire Cemetery.

He was born on May 3, 1927 to the late Moses Parks and Della Ward. In addition to his parents, Jesse was preceded in death by a sister, Sue Fowler; seven brothers, Frank, Bob, Grover, Ben, Troy, Lonnie and Homer Ward; and a grandchild, Oliver Ryan Ward.
Jesse loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed gardening and taking walks. He also enjoyed swinging on his porch swing.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Nancy Louise Lockner Ward; a daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte Marie and Kenith Ryan of Johnson City, Tenn.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Jeffrey Lowell Ward of Kingsport, Tenn., and Michael Lynn and Darcy Ward of Mount Ulla, N.C.; a sister, Barbara Stout and husband Alan of Poga, Tenn.; a brother, Herb Ward of Mountain City, Tenn.; grandchildren, Anton Corinthian Hodge and Adrian Rayjean Ward; and several nieces and nephews.

He was born September 11, 1946 in Avery County, NC a son of the late Jessie James Jones and Amelia Franklin Jones.

Jessie, known as Junior/June to family and friends, was a Vietnam Veteran who served his country proudly from 1969-1971. In younger years he was known to all his buddies as the “Gray Rooster.” He was a hard working outdoorsman. He loved working with cattle, farming, gardening and fishing.

In addition to his father Jessie and mother Amelia, he was preceded in death by his brother, Charles Jones, and sister, Rebecca Jones Careccia.

Jessie leaves behind to cherish his memory, sons, Corey Jones of Newland, NC, Brian Jones of Kingsport, TN, Brandon Jones and wife, Toni, of Morganton, NC; grandsons; Tyler Jones of Morganton, NC; Tristan Jones of Kingsport, TN; and Casey Jones of Newland, NC. A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Clennie and Nina Taylor Ollis. She was also preceded in death by her Husband: Leonard Veed Staton, who passed away in 2009; Sisters: Belva Holtsclaw, Beulah Roberts and Eula Townsend; Brothers: Claude, Clay and Bascum Ollis; and a Son-in-law: Grady Williams. Jessie was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Frank.

Surviving is her son: Leonard Dee Staton and wife, Mavis, of Lenoir; and her Daughter: Faye Williams of Cranberry Gap. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

4478 Jessie V. Lingerfelt White CHUCKEY, Tenn. ? Jessie V. Lingerfelt White, 84, of the Horse Creek Community in Chuckey, Tenn., died at home on April 15, 2005. She was preceded in death by her first husband, the Rev. Oral Lingerfelt, an elder in the United Methodist Church in the Johnson City District of the Holston Conference. She was also preceded in death by her second husband, Alvin White, formerly of Unicoi, Tenn. Mrs. White was a member of Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church where she was very active until her health would not permit any major involvement. She was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and former member of the Horse Creek Ruritan Club. She is survived by a very loving and caring family, who all say their love and care of other people was instilled in them as children by their mother. A native of Mitchell County, he was a son of the late Nathan and Belva Hughes Deyton.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Larry Deyton, of Relief.

JD enjoyed journaling, reading his bible, and loved his children, grandchildren, family, and friends dearly. He will be remembered as an animal lover, a mountain man, a farmer, and a trader with a huge heart. He will be missed by his family, friends, and his dog Mozey.

4482 Jettie Lou Grindstaff, age 90, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 3, 2021, at her residence. Jettie was born in Elizabethton to the late Clayton and Dora Stout Grindstaff. In addition to her parents, Jettie was also preceded in death by her husband, Glen Grindstaff; two sons, Randy Grindstaff and Ernest Grindstaff; two grandsons, Glen Charles Campbell and Harvey Dale Campbell; a step-grandson, Kip Roberts; and several brothers and sisters.

Jettie retired as a seamstress at HPH Apparel and had also worked as a seamstress for Denise Lingerie. She was a member of Unaka Baptist Church and enjoyed quilting, canning, shopping and coloring in her many coloring books.

Those left to cherish her wonderful memories include her daughter, Margie Roberts, of Elizabethton; four sons, Max Hubert Grindstaff, Graylon Grindstaff, Bobby Joe Grindstaff and Joshua Campbell, all of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Tammy Campbell and Wendy Baker, both of Elizabethton; five great-grandchildren, Britney, Christopher, Skyler, Joseph and Austin; a special nephew, Carroll Grindstaff and wife Nancy, of Elizabethton; four step-grandchildren, Jama, Robin, Delbert and Erby; many step-great-grandchildren and great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Frances Taylor, of Elizabethton. She is a native and lifetime resident of Unicoi County, TN, and is the daughter of the late George and Mary Etta Blankenship Silvers. Jettie was a homemaker, and a great mother, who loved her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Roseville Baptist Church.

Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Ezra Silvers; son, Ezra Silvers Jr.; 4 Brothers; and 3 Sisters

She leaves behind: Three Sons: Wiley Silvers and Claude Silvers, of Flag Pond, and Cozy Silvers, of Erwin; Four Daughters: Shirley Tipton, Lennis Tipton, Velda Burchett and Ann Davis, all of Erwin; Three Brothers: Harrison Silvers and Offie Silvers, of Flag Pond, and Riley Silvers of Erwin; Two Sisters: Sally Rice, of Erwin, and Eunice McIntosh, of Johnson City; 33 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 P.M. Monday, September 27, 2010, at the Chapel of Valley Funeral Home. Reverend Craig Shelton will officiate. Musical Selections will be provided by Carrie Ford.

4484 Jewel Chambers, 82, 232 Coal Chute Road, Elizabethton, died unexpectedly Monday, March 19, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. Chambers was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Harry and Celia Smith Adams. Mrs. Chambers attended Doe River Baptist Church. She was a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation and was a homemaker.

4485 Jewel Trivett Nunley was called to heaven May 7, 2022. Jewel was born to Vana McGuire Trivett and John Trivett in Beech Mountain, North Carolina.
She married her school sweetheart, William R. Nunley (Bill) in 1955. She began her career while raising her family by selling encyclopedias and taking interior design courses. Her interest in interior design sparked her entrepreneurial spirit and she, along with her husband Bill, parlayed their combined talents into a successful furniture and appliance business that served the community for many years.
Jewel was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bill, and son, Anthony (Tony). She was also predeceased by her brothers Pat, Clarence and Vernon and sisters, Wilma, Lenos and Georgia.
Those left to cherish her memory and light of her immense love include three daughters, Diana, Delilah and Deborah and sons-in-law Wayne Bartley and Ed Gorman; four grandchildren, Brooks, Stuart and wife Emily, Nicholas and Myranda. Beloved siblings Judy Lynn (Johnny) and Clark Trivett (Judy), sisters-in-law Mary Jane Hart, Nola Gay Trivett, and Elizabeth Nunley and brother-in-law Jerry Baird survive. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

4486 Jewell Sevier Tilson, age 92, passed away peacefully in Kingsport on June 13, 2018, after a period of declining health. He was born January 10, 1926 in Unicoi County to Jessee Francis and Mamie Higgins Tilson.

By 1930 the family moved to Washington County. Following graduation from Washington College Academy in 1944, Jewell worked on the family farm for two years while teaching at Washington College Academy and studying voice from Rhea Hunter.

After finishing his degree in Choral studies at East Tennessee State University, Mr. Tilson was "talked into" teaching band by former Elizabethton High School band director, Mel Kelly. Mr. Tilson began his teaching career at Elizabethton Junior High School and then taught at Washington College Academy, Elizabethton High School, Chattanooga City High School, Dobyns-Bennett High School and John Sevier Middle School.

Mr. Tilson's bands were noted for outstanding concert and marching performances, receiving numerous superior ratings in competition. His bands from Chattanooga and Kingsport won first place four times at the Contest of Champions held at Middle Tennessee State University. The Dobyns-Bennett High School Band became one of the first high school bands in the state of Tennessee to travel internationally. Under his tutelage, Dobyns-Bennett received the Minister of Education Award for Musical Performance at the International Band Festival in Vienna, Austria in 1972. In addition, the Dobyns-Bennett band travel to Spain during the 1970's and enjoyed a European tour in 1980.

He served as clinician and judge at musical competitions throughout the south both during his teaching career and after his retirement. He served as President of the Tennessee Bandmasters Association and held membership in the East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association, National Band Association and Music Educators National Conference. Mr. Tilson was also a member of Phi Beta Mu.

Mr. Tilson's passion for music resulted in a plethora of opportunities in church music and civic music both as leader and participant, including the Kingsport Community Band, the First Presbyterian Choir, and the Symphony of the Mountains Chorus.

Well into his later years, Mr. Tilson was well respected by music educators and former students alike. He very much enjoyed the students who visited his home, especially hearing from the ones who were still involved in music. In 2006, he was inducted into the Tennessee Bandmasters Hall of Fame.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his nine siblings: Evelyn Tilson McCracken, Dortha Tilson Garber, Della Tilson, Forrest Tilson, Jessee Dwight Tilson, Francis Vowe Tilson, Kathleen Tilson Usary, William Tilson, and Joy Tilson Hensley. His son, Dwight Allen Tilson also preceded him in death.

He is survived by his loving wife, Koleta Baker Tilson; daughter Debra Tilson Gill (Charles) of Easley, South Carolina, son John Steven Tilson (Kathryn) of Knoxville; granddaughters Ashley Tilson Gill (Jason) and Laura Gill Spearman (Chad); grandson Alexander Martyn Tilson; great-grandchildren Levi Branham Gill, Charles Leland Gill, Reed Gardner Spearman and Tilson Grey Spearman.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 16, from 5-7pm at Hamlett-Dotson funeral home in Kingsport, followed by a memorial service on Sunday, June 17 at 1:30 pm at First Presbyterian Church in Kingsport. Interment at East Lawn Cemetery will follow the service on Sunday.

4487 Jill Bowman Childs died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at her home after an extended illness.

She was under the care of Wellmont Hospice. Mrs. Childs had been a resident of Sullivan County for 37 years. She attended public schools in Johnson City and graduated from East Tennessee State University with a BS in health and physical education. She was a teacher at Bristol Virginia Junior High School and later in the Panama City, Fla., public school system.

Mrs. Childs is survived by her husband, Lester H. Childs Jr. of Broadmore Assisted Living in Bristol Tennessee; her sister and brother-in-law, Ann and Marvin Blizard of Springfield, Va.; and a nephew, Robert E. Blizard of Gaithersburg, Md.

The entombment service will be conducted at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon in the Heritage Chapel of Memories at Glenwood Cemetery, with Dr. W.A. Johnson officiating. There will be no funeral home visitation, but friends may call at the home following the service.

He was born on Dec. 15, 1929 in Avery County, NC, a son of Jim McClure Vance and Joda Pyatte Vance.

He was preceded in death by his Father: Jim McClure Vance, Sr.; Mother: Joda Blanch Vance; Wife: Frances Louise Owens Vance; Two Sons: Larry Wayne Vance and Aaron Eugene Vance;

Jim was a member of Crossnore First Baptist Church, where he formerly served as Chairman of the Deacons. He was a member of the Linville Masonic Lodge #489. He enjoyed listening to Gospel Hymns and Country Music, especially Alan Jackson.

4490 Jimmy Dean Ward, age 60, of Lenoir went to his Heavenly home on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at his residence. He was born January 26, 1961 in Mountain City, Tennessee to the late James Willard Ward and Margaret Arnold. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by a brother, Jeffery Potter.

Jimmy was a loving and caring family man who lived for his children. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Liberty Baptist Church. Jimmy had a passion for video games and all things Star Trek. He shared this passion with his lifelong best friend, Roger Mitchell of Lenoir. They have shared 38 years of ups and downs and were the true definition of a “ride or die” friend.

Survivors include his three children, Erin Ward of Hickory, Enya Ward and Jimmy “Dean” Ward, both of Lenoir; step-mother, Jackie Ward of Gamewell; two brothers, Paul “David” Ward and Charles Hamby, both of Lenoir; four sisters, Debbie Dickens and husband Norman, Tammy Griffin and husband Eddie, all of Tennessee, Jeanna Warhurst and husband Troy, and Wendy Whitt, all of Lenoir; and numerous nieces and nephews.

4491 Jimmy Earl Icenhour, age 71, passed away on January 2, 2022 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, TN. Jimmy was born on May 18, 1950 to the late Burl “Buck” Icenhour and Hattie Bell Davis Icenhour. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Icenhour, Anita Garland, and Loretta “Tootie” Icenhour Sisk.

Jimmy loved spending time with his grandkids and visiting West Virgina. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

4492 Jimmy L. Keesee, 73, passed away on Monday, June 20, 2022, at his home.

He was born on July 25, 1948, in Bristol, Va., to the late Estel Haynes Keesee and Mary Cecil Jackson Keesee.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Cliff and Dale Keesee; one great granddaughter, Reagan Brooke; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Gene and Edith Whiteaker; two brothers-in-law, Frank Whiteaker and Glen Mikel; sister-in-law, Dot Keesee and a special friend, Gary Long.

Jimmy was an avid outdoorsman. He loved spending time in the mountains especially hunting, trout fishing and collecting Indian artifacts. He owned and operated Import Car Supply in Bristol, Va., for several years.

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Martha Whiteaker Keesee; four children, Megan Singleton (Clarence “Peanut”), Jesse Keesee (Jamie), Jennifer Gilley (Jeremiah) and Jeff Keesee; three sisters, Shirley Mikeal, Donna Keesee (Melanie) and Judy Brownlee (Barry "Corky"); nine grandchildren, Riley Singleton, Taraney Singleton, Jase Keesee, Jordyn Keesee, Landon Keesee and Luke Fields, Caitlin Gilley, Hannah Gilley and Paige Keesee; three great grandchildren, Addy, Payton and Caton; sister-in-law, Liz Keesee; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A gathering for family and friends to celebrate his life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, June 25, 2022, at Frost Funeral Home. There will be no other formal services.

4493 Jimmy Lee Roberts, age 66, entered into a peaceful, eternal sleep on June 1st, 2021 surrounded by his wife and family.

Jimmy, son of the late William Emory Roberts and Florence “Toby” Graybeal Roberts, was born in Unicoi, TN in 1961 and resided in Gray, TN for the last 25 years. He had a strong work ethic and was a dedicated employee of American Water Heater for 49 years.

Jimmy’s family was his world, and he was very proud of all his children and grandchildren although he always hated that they were spread all over the country. He taught us how to be there for family. He was a fierce protector and could have a mean streak if you messed with his family. On the other hand, he was kind, selfless, and would give you the shirt off his back even if he did not have one to replace it. His favorite place was at the Eight Ball machine at Harrah’s Casino, although he would never tell anyone how much he won or lost.

Jimmy was the best papaw and would let his grandkids get by with anything. Each of us had our own special bond and many memories to cherish. He will be missed but we will take comfort knowing he is no longer in pain and can finally be with his daughters.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved daughters: Jamie Lee and Jessica Maureena Roberts, brothers: Bill and Chris Roberts, sister: Rebecca McInturff, and special nephew: Billy Whitson.

4495 JNO. A. ANDERSON - JOHNSON CITY, May 15. – Jno. A. Anderson, of Buffalo, Carter county, died today of liver complaint, at his home, aged sixty-five years. Mr. Anderson was one of the best farmers and traders in upper East Tennessee and had accumulated a large landed estate in Unicoi, Carter and Washington counties, the bulk of which he deeded during his life time to his six children. His only daughter, Jennie, is the wife of Congressman A. A. Taylor.

4496 Jo Ann Carden Ellis Pearce, age 77, of Hampton, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2012 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a sudden illness. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Stover and Naomi Ruth Moody Carden.
Mrs. Pearce had worked as a cook at Hampton Elementary School. She was a very talented pianist and had a passion for music. Jo Ann enjoyed roller skating and ice skating. She was a member of Hampton First Baptist Church and Hampton Christian Church.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Pearce was preceded in death by her husband, Harry R. Pearce and six brothers, Harry, Clarence, Carl, William, Robert, and Charlie Carden. She is survived by a daughter, Debbie Ellis Howe and husband, Daniel, Kingsport; two sons, James Daniel Ellis, of the home, and Joseph Leslie Pearce and his fiancé, Sherri Lewis, Hampton; three grandchildren, Virginia Naomi Marshall and husband, Dr. Phillip Marshall, Richard Matthew Howe, and Madeline Michelle Howe, all of Kingsport; several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her first husband, Lewis Ellis, Johnson City; and special nieces, Bobbie Carolyn, Barbara Sue, Ruth Evelyn, Nancy Lynn, and Priscilla. Several additional nieces and nephews that Jo Ann greatly adored also survive.
The funeral service for Mrs. Pearce will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, April 10, 2012 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, Minister, officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel prior to the service.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, April 11, 2012 in the Hall Cemetery in Hampton. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 9:15 A.M. on Wednesday to travel together in procession. 4497 Jo Matherly Hickman Cantrell, 81, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at her residence. She was born November 20, 1939 in Elizabethton to the late Fred and Hazel McGee Matherly.
Jo was a graduate of Elizabethton High School, Class of 1957. She was the retired owner of State Line Market and several restaurants. She loved Jesus, her family, traveling, and collecting her beloved teddy bears. She was an avid bowler in her youth.
Jo was a member of Myrtle Beach Christian Church and was a former Trustee of Sims Hill Christian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse “Sam” Hickman; sisters, Gail Tolley and Jessie Davis and husband Johnny Davis; an infant brother, Glen Matherly; and a son-in-law, Richard Porch.
Survivors include her husband and beloved caregiver, Stan Cantrell, of the home; daughter, Cecelia Ann Porch; her grandchildren, Randi (Brian) Teaster, Travis (Megan) Jack, Matthew (Rebecca) Lovelace and Miranda Lovelace; her great-grandchildren, Ethan Teaster, Weston Teaster, Bodie Jack, London Lovelace, Camden Lovelace, Ryan Peterson, Lydia Lovelace and Jonah Love; her sister, Carolyn (Dallas) Pierce; multiple special nieces and nephews; her brothers-in-law, Michael (Dot) Cantrell and Robert Cantrell; and her sisters-in-law, Carol (Randall) Payne, Lena (Otis) Blankenship and Diane Cantrell.

4498 Joan Shelton Tipton, 73 passed away Saturday, July 31, 2021 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was native of Erwin, Tennessee and was born on December 12, 1947 to the late Worley Shelton and Pearl Howell Shelton Edney. Her hobbies included: gardening, painting and going out to eat with some of her special friends. She especially loved her flowers and loved her family and she loved the Lord. She was a member of and attended Maranatha Tabernacle until her health declined. Joan is preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, RL Edney; father in law and mother in law, Herman and Belle Tipton; sister in law and brother in law, Ronnie and Patsy Bennett; sister in law, Hiroko Tipton;

Funeral services for Joan will be conducted at 1:00 PM Wednesday, August 4, 2021 in the Maranatha Tabernacle, 300 Maranatha Lane, Unicoi, Tennessee with Pastor E.L. Wheeler officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 AM until the service hour. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memory Park. 4499 Joan Ward, 82, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with her Lord and loved ones on Thursday, November 21, 2019, from Ivy Hall Nursing Home in Elizabethton. Joan was born in Elizabethton to the late J.D. and Addie Williams Oliver. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and loving father, Lee R. Ward; a son, Jerry Lee Ward; two sisters, Mae Buckles and Minnie Williams; and two brothers, Clayton Oliver and Harley Oliver.
Joan was a native of Carter County, a devoted, loving and caring Mother and a member of Blue Springs Christian Church. She loved her church, garden work and the people of her church.
Those left to cherish her many wonderful memories include her daughter, Teresa Ward of Elizabethton; a son, Jeffrey Ward and wife Patty of Glen St. Mary, Fla.; three sisters, Wanda Bennett, Nadine Ward and Louis, all of Elizabethton; three grandsons, James Miller and wife Bailey of Elizabethton, Aaron Ward of Virginia and Billy Collins of Picksburg, Pa.; and her granddaughter, Bianca Ward of California. Several nieces, nephews and other grandchildren also survive.
It was Mrs. Ward's request to have a private graveside service at a later time.

4500 Joan Wright Messimer left the pain and suffering of her earthly body and transitioned to her heavenly home on December 20, 2020.
Joan was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved her family and extended family fiercely and showed special acts of thoughtfulness to her family, friends, and neighbors. Jo retired after 30 years of helping children learn to read in Washington County Schools working alongside her life-long friend Helen Bowman at Jonesborough Elementary School. Jo was a member of First Christian Church where she attended the Bridgebuilder's Sunday School Class. She was a former member at Central Christian Church, Jonesborough where she taught Sunday School class for many years. Jo played the piano, sang in the church choirs, and special music groups over the years. Known as GrandJo by her only grandchild, Thomas, she loved attending his basketball games when her health permitted. Jo played basketball at Lamar High School and was named to the All- Region Team; she was a fan of the UT Lady Vols and a classy lady who enjoyed shopping - especially at Talbots, Chicos, and Topps Shoes. She was known for her delicious Rice Krispy treats, pecan pies, and love of decorating for holidays year-round. Jo had a green thumb and always had beautiful flowers surrounding her home. She had a special place in her heart for her cats.
Mrs. Messimer was preceded in death by her parents Sam and Mary Wright, her brothers - S.V. and Dick Wright, and sisters - Bessie Catherine Wright and Peggy Phillips.
Those left to cherish Jo's memory include her husband of sixty years, Emil Messimer, son - Sam Messimer and daughter-in-law Lisa, and grandson Thomas Messimer. Jo also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and special friends.
A private graveside service will be held at Monte Vista Memorial Gardens, 1900 E Oakland Ave, Johnson City, TN.
