| 3962 | In loving memory of SFC, United States Army (Retired) Cratus (Smokey) Barnett, a Vietnam Veteran of three tours. Retired Army of 23 years and a two time Purple Heart Recipient. Beloved son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who passed away on Saturday, June 25th, 2016 at the age of 77. Cratus was born in Mitchell County, North Carolina on December 19, 1938. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Reverend Calvin and Rittie Barnett of Green Mountain, North Carolina and a daughter, Shari (Lynch) Barnett of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Kathleen Barnett; twelve siblings, Arnold, Maxine, Edna, Gaylon, Carrie, Carolyn, Charlotte, David, Danny, Michael, Jackie and Jerry. Cratus had eight children, Sonya, Steve, Manuela, David, Daryl, Danny, Todd and Darin; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren. Smokey was an avid musician and fan of blue grass music. He played at the Red Barn and other venues. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, working in his yard and was a member of the American Legion. He was a master carpenter and loved his dog and best friend, Zeke. The family will hold a memorial service for Cratus (Smokey) Barnett at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, June 29th, 2016 at the Marbelton Freewill Baptist Church, 1703 Marbleton Road, Unicoi, TN where he will receive full military honors accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. From the History of the 13th Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, US Army DEATH OF JAMES L. GARRISON. Motte and Duff had committed so many crimes upon these Union people that a number of Union men determined to put a stop to it. Learning that they were to be at the house of Melvina Hilton, in Elizabethton, on a certain night, Elbridge and Robert Treadway, James L. Garrison and some other Union men, including four or five colored men who had been in hiding and had a camp in the mountains near a place called Queen's Station, about four miles south, or southeast of Elizabethton, came intn town and surrounded Mrs. Hilton's house, stationing men at the doors and windows. Motte and Duff, with one or two others (citizens), were sitting at a table playing cards, in a small room at the south side of the house, which had but one door and one small window. Tread-way called on them to surrender. They arose from the table and barricaded the door with a bedstead so that it would open only far enough for Duff to reach his pistol through the opening and fire on the men outside. This he did, fatally shooting Garrison and seriously wounding one of the colored men, and was severely wounded in the wrist himself. The attacking party being unable to force the door or get into the small -window without serious loss of life, withdrew and the two men escaped. The colored man was removed and soon afterwards made his way to the Federal lines. Garrison was taken back into the mountains and his wound was finally dressed by Dr. H. T. Berry, a rebel citizen, and he lingered some time in great agony. Garrison was a good, kind-hearted man, true to his principles and loyal to his country. He was about 45 years old, and left a widow and seven children, the oldest 12 years. | 3995 | In the 1870s, country miller William Henderson De Loach, of Kirby Springs, GA, invented a horse power that allowed him to thresh a farmer's grain on site, avoiding the need for the customer to bring the grain into town. He also developed a grist mill. When the equipment manufacturing business outstripped his milling business he and his sons moved to Atlanta and established W. H. De Loach & Sons; this was during or before 1875. The company seems to have incorporated in 1887 as De Loach Mill Manufacturing Co. At some point they began to manufacture sawmlls and related equipment. Alonzo A. DeLoach (W. H.'s son) received an 1890 sawmill patent, so it is likely they were already making sawmills by that time. After W. H. De Loach died in 1914, his sons relocated the business to South Bridgeport, AL, and by 1920 they were in Chattanooga, TN.
