3601 HAMPTON - Herman Tolley, 90, Hampton, passed away on Sunday, May 7, 2023 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital surrounded by his loving family. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Charlie & Lockie Hilmon Tolley. Herman was a graduate of Cloudland High School. He was a US Army Veteran and had also worked at Brown’s Supermarket in Hampton for many years. He was a Master Gardner and loved to give things out of the garden away. In earlier years he attended Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Shonette Cutlip Tolley who passed away July 24, 2016; by a granddaughter: Amber Shaw Calhoun; and also 10 brothers and sisters.

Survivors include his children: Keith (Wendy Hill), Patty (Garry Smith), and Leon (Rebecca). His grandchildren: Tracy (Jeff) Guy, Mitchell (Maggie), R.J. and Ezra Tolley and Sarah Hill, His great-grandchildren: Lane and Timber Shaw and Jeffrey, River, and Rudy Guy, a loving sister: Shirl Davis and several nieces and nephews. He was blessed with more friends that can be named whom he loved dearly.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 11, 2023, in the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Richard Stout officiating. Burial will follow the service. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

3602 HAMPTON - Jack Tolley, 90, Hampton, passed away Friday, April 1, 2022 in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. He was born October 17, 1931 in Carter County to the late Charlie & Lockie Hilman Tolley. Jack was a graduate of Hampton High School, East Tennessee State College and the University of Tennessee with a Masters Degree in Education. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a teacher and coach at Cloudland High School, a Counselor at Cloudland High School and served as Principal at Cloudland High School and was a Supervisor of Special Education in Carter County making a total of 45 years in the education field. He loved farming, gardening and loved people and outdoors. Jack was a member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Sammie Whitehead Tolley, a granddaughter: Rachel Clawson, four brothers: Paul, Julius, Mack and Wade Tolley and three sisters: Leafie Street, Darla Hyder and Mahalie Hampton.
Survivors include his children: Sherry (Michael) Clawson, Hampton and John Charles (Joan) Tolley, Johnson City, Two Grandsons: Seth (Kayla) Clawson and John (Goldie) Tolley. Two Great Grandchildren: Colton and Rae Clawson. Two Sisters: Geneva Roberts and Shirlene Davis and One Brother: Herman Tolley. Several nieces & nephews.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2022 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, Minister officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of Peace, Happy Valley Memorial Park. 3603 HAMPTON - James A. “Jim” Murray, age 79, of Hampton, Tn. Passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2022, peacefully at his home. Jim was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was the son of the late Arthur J. & Betty Morton Murray. He was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. He attended Hampton Christian Church. He was a Master Mason of Hampton Lodge # 750 for fifty years. He was a member of UA Pipefitters and Plumbers Local # 538. Jim enjoyed fishing, riding his golf cart, helping others, and watching his grandson play/coach basketball.

3604 HAMPTON - Jerry Keith Heaton, 63, Hampton went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Sept.29, 2019 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville with his family by his side.

Born December 19, 1955 in Baltimore, Maryland, he had lived most of his life in Tennessee. He was a 1973 graduate of Cloudland High School. He was a member of Roan Mountain Lodge. He was of the Baptist Faith. Jerry was preceded in death by his father; Tip Heaton.

He is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 31 years: Donna Pierce Heaton. His Mother: Dorothy Heaton, Two Brothers: Ronnie (Judy) Heaton, niece: Wendy and nephew Jamie, Robert (Sherri) Heaton and nephew Alex. Father & Mother-In-Law: Ralph & Kay Pierce. Two Sisters-in-Law: Debbie (Randy) Payne and Nephew: Michael & Diana (Dean) Maxwell. 3605 HAMPTON - Jerry Wayne "Ollie" Oliver, age 66, of Hampton, went to his heavenly home surrounded by his family on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Jerry was born in Carter County to the late Edward H. and Para Potter Oliver. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Johnnie H. Oliver; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Clyde and Hazel Fuller.

Jerry was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a brick and block mason by trade and attended Hampton Christian Church. Jerry loved playing guitar, working on his old cars in his garage, and spending time with his friends. He left his imprint throughout the region with the homes he built and the businesses he built and operated.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted wife of 34 years, Kathy Fuller Oliver, of the home; two son, David Oliver and wife Michelle, of Gray, TN and Charles Oliver and wife Deidra, of Erwin; a brother, Bill Oliver and wife Kathy, of Hampton; a sister, Wanda Marlow and husband Buck, also of Hampton; seven grandchildren, Sophie, Malorie, Riley, Keara, Kaleace, Charlie Beth and Jace; one brother-in-law, Jeff Fuller; three sisters-in-law, Stephanie Rowe and husband Chris, Carolyn Fuller, and Jennifer Treadway and husband Wes; and a special friend, Betsy Rainbolt. Several nieces, nephews, special cousins and special friends, also survive.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Jerry Wayne "Ollie" Oliver will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Dwayne Calhoun and Rev. Ronnie Campbell, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Tuesday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Larry Marlow, Kale Ward, Kevin Ward, Mike Hawkins, Randall Vines, Ray Campbell, Richard Arnett and Jeff Fuller. 3606 HAMPTON - John Garland Lewis, 81, Hampton, passed away Monday, January 16, 2023 at his residence. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Paul Edward and Beulah Lewis. He was a 1959 graduate of Hampton High School and Elizabethton Business College. He served in the United States Army in Korea from 1959 until 1961. He was owner/operator of Hampton Tire Company for 45 years. John was a former Carter County Commissioner for 12 years serving not only the people in the 6th district (Hampton, Poga, Little Milligan and Valley Forge), but also the people in the surrounding communities. He loved people. He was known as the Mayor of Hampton. John was a member of Victory Baptist Church and also attended Pleasant Beach Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Shelton, Randy and Paul Lewis.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years: Peggy White Lewis. Three Daughters: Kim (Doug) Vines, Hampton, Joni Kaye (Jonathan) Sams, Elizabethton and Juli Renee (Josh) Lewis, Watauga. Four Grandchildren: Brett Allen Cable, Alana Maye Range, Annie Pearl Lewis, and Hunter Jayden Lee Sams. One Step-Grandson: Jaden Burem. Two Sisters: Nadine Million, Chattanooga and Rose Smith, Johnson City. Three Brothers: Jim (Susan) Lewis, Kingsport, Wayne Lewis, Bluff City and Pat (Linda) Lewis, Elizabethton. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Saturday, January 21, 2023 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mark Fowler, Rev. Jerry Honeycutt and Rev. Jack Lyons officiating. Music will be provided by his daughter: Juli “Blue” Lewis, and Rev. Larry Montgomery. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, January 23, 2023 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery (Historic Section) with the Rev. Larry Montgomery officiating. 3607 HAMPTON - John Paul, age 60, and wife, Robin Renee Sells Mathes, age 47, Hampton, Tn. passed away Friday, July 8, 2016 at Watauga Lake. They were camping when the storm came through.

Robin had lived in Georgia for several years but was a native of Bristol, Tennessee. She was a graduate of Ringgold, Georgia High School. She was associated with her husband in the operation of The Hamptons Camp Ground. Robin and John Paul loved camping, fishing, the outdoors and their family. She attended Hampton Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Carl T. Sells, Sr. & Mayme Ruth Sells, T.G. & Vivian Gibson Hickman; her Uncles, Samuel (Sam) David Sells and Marty Hickman.

Survivors include her son & daughter-In-Law, Justin Ryan & Marsha Musselwhite, Acworth, Georgia; her daughter, Jessica Renee Musselwhite, Nashville, Tennessee; her step-son, J.P. & Wife Leona Mathes, Johnson City; her grandchildren, Ella Ruth & Jackson Ryan Musselwhite; her father & step-mother, James E. "Jim" & Kim Sells, Elizabethton; her mother & step-father, Porita Hickman Jones & husband David, Woodstock, Georgia; her brother & sister-in-law, James E. He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Mathes and his grandparents, Luther & Goldie Hall and Paul Tolley and Minister & Mrs. John Mathes.

Survivors include his son & daughter-in-law, J.P. & Leona Mathes, Johnson City, his step-children, Justin Ryan & Wife Marsha Musselwhite, Acworth, Georgia and Jessica Renee Musselwhite, Nashville, Tennessee; his step-grandchildren, Ella Ruth & Jackson Ryan Musselwhite; his mother, Roma Jean Tolley Mathes, Elizabethton; sister & "brother-in-law", Debbie & Jimmy Bunton, Elizabethton; his brothers, Greg Mathes and wife Teresa and Brian Mathes and Debra Buckles all of Elizabethto; his mother-in-law, Porita Hickman Jones & husband David, Woodstock, Georgia; his father-in-law, James "Jim" Sells and wife Kim, Elizabethton; several nieces & nephews.

Joint Funeral Services for John Paul & Robin will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Hampton Elementary School Gymnasium with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, Minister, Rev. Dave Whitesides and Rev. Adam Sells officiating. Music will be provided by Jerry White and Friends and J.P. & Leona Mathes.

Active Pallbearers for Robin will be: Jamie Sells, Daltyn Sells, Paul Clark and Adam McBride. Active Pallbearers for John Paul will be: Shane Stockton, Tony Greene, Hank Jenkins, Eddie Joe Wilson, Cody Bunton, Mike "Red" Dugger, Johnny Blankenship, Rick McClain, Mick Mathis and Phil Hileman. 3608 HAMPTON - Joyce Johnson James, 82, Hampton, passed away Monday, February 28, 2022 at her residence following an extended illness. She was born in Carter County May 31, 1939 to the late George W. & Libby Benfield Johnson. Joyce was a 1957 graduate of Hampton High School. She loved working in her garden and quilting. She was a Charter member of Braemar Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Bobby R. James, January 31, 2000, by a sister, Faye Johnson Potter and Three brothers: Bill Johnson, Walter Johnson and Joe Johnson.
Survivors include her children: Terri James Shipley, Elizabethton, Bobby R. James II and Cathy Selbert and LeAnna James Brummitt and husband Mike all of Hampton. Six Grandchildren: Amber & Adam McElyea, Jordan Lambert & wife Erika, Daniel “Opie” Lambert, Bobby James III, Michaela & Hunter Skalecki,and Kortnee Brummitt. Her Great Grandchildren:Neelynn , ShyAnne, JJ, Brayden, Andrew, Ridge and Lincoln. Several nieces & nephews.

3609 HAMPTON - June Elizabeth Nave, 90, Hampton, passed away Friday, February 17, 2023 in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, she was born July 5, 1932 to the late Nathan & Georgia Edwards Street. June was a graduate of Hampton High School. She was employed for several years at North Electric ITT. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Luther Paul Nave, Sr., a daughter: Cheryl Nave, one sister: Naomi Williams and a special friend: Lee Laws. Prior to her illness she attended Beck Mountain Baptist Church. She loved to read her Bible.

Survivors include her son: Luther Paul Nave, Jr., Hampton; a granddaughter: Ashley Brooke Nave, Hampton; one sister: Marie Kemp, Baltimore, Maryland; one niece: Sandra Lebrun; two great-nephews: Michael and Johnny Lebrun, and her cats: Kitty Love and CoCo.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2023 in Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Jeremy Burleson officiating. Active pallbearers will be Mikie Wells, Matthew Adcock, Mark Davenport, Mike Nash, Wayne Humphrey and Rick Bowers. 3610 HAMPTON - Karen Lynn Forbes Fisher, 57, Hampton passed away Friday, January 11, 2019 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

She was born February 7, 1961 in Elizabethton. Karen was a retired School Teacher having taught 23 years in Carter & Johnson Counties. She was a graduate of Hampton High School, a Bachelor of Science, and Elementary Education in 1985 from East Tennessee State University and a Masters of Education, Special Education in 1996. Her activities include; Student Teacher Education Association (STEA), Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Mentor Teacher, Student Teaching Mentor Teacher. Kappa Delta Pi Honor Society. Served as Historian, Vice-President and President of Kappa Delta Pi. Her Notable Awards: Shulman Family Foundation Scholarship Award, David Kent Miller Scholarship Award, Dean's List, Magna Cum Laude graduate. She also had previously worked at the Elizabethton Library. She was a member of the National Education Association, The Carter County Education Association, and the Tennessee Education Association. Karen was a member of the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church where she sang in the choir prior to her illness. She was preceded in death by her grandparents: William "Will" & Florence Forbes, Carl & Rosetta Babb, Her step-dad Bob Laws and her father & mother-in-law: Vaughn & Elsie Fritts.

Survivors include her son: James Robert "Robbie" Fritts, Hampton. Her Mother: Charlotte Babb Laws. Her Father: Roy Forbes and Erma Stevens. Her sisters: Linda Kay Forbes and Rosie Forbes Harwell & husband David. Her Brother: Clyde Edward "Ed" Forbes & wife Jennifer "Jenny". The father of her son: James "Jim" Fritts. A Service to celebrate the life of Karen Fisher will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Johnson and Rev. Mark Potter officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Music will be provided by the John Harrington Family and the Praise Choir of Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church. 3611 HAMPTON - Kay Hill, age 80, of Hampton, went home to be with her Lord and rejoin her husband on Saturday, January 7, 2017 from Sycamore Shoals Hospital, following a short illness. Kay was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Charles and Emma Davis Peters. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Herman Hill on May 12, 2015; two nephews, Robert Stocton and Neil Moody.

Kay was a 1954 graduate of Hampton High School and retired from Sperry/Unisys after 30 years of service. She was a member of Union Baptist Church in Hampton and enjoyed reading, gardening, genealogy and local history. Most of all she loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

3612 HAMPTON - Kyle Dean Hyder, 76, Hampton passed away Wednesday, September 14, 2016 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Daunt & Lucyle McLaughlin Hyder. He was a graduate of Hampton High School. Kyle was a retired Millwright and Cattle Farmer. He was of the Free Will Baptist Faith. Kyle served on the Board of Director of Farm Bureau and the American Pinzgauer Association and the Carter County Cattleman Association. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Fern Pierce, his brothers: Kenneth, Benny, Dan, Daunt and Mack Hyder.

A native of Carter County, (Fish Springs Community) she was a daughter of the late Frank & Sallie Main Smith. Mrs. Cutlip attended Watauga Academy, Butler. She was employed as a LPN at the former Carter County Memorial Hospital for several years. She was a member of the Daughters of The American Revolution, a member of the Hampton Eastern Star and a member of Rittertown Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Frank Edward Cutlip, December 20, 2000, by two daughters: Ranell Orfield and Shonette Tolley , three brothers: Brown, Bud & W.K. She was born May 13, 1923 on Dennis Cove Mountain to the late Lloyd & Hettie Ward Whitehead. Her father's family was one of the earliest settlers of Dennis Cove Mountain. She was a graduate of Cloudland High School. Mrs. Hughes taught school on Dennis Cove Mountain for several years. She was a housewife, farmer, loved to read, sing, quilt and sew. In earlier years she attended Pearce Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Nathan Hughes in 1984, by three children: Loretta Hughes, Wayne Hughes and Larry Hughes, Three Grandchildren: Allen Hughes, Christy Hughes and Larry Hughes, Jr and six brothers & sisters.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the Ray & Jennie Simerly Norris. Lois was retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 42 years of service. She attended Harmony Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Glen Hill who passed away August 1, 1981 and by three sisters: Georgia Hill, Ruth Teague and Belle Hyder.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Henry A. & Lucy Morton Whitehead. Louis was a 1955 graduate of Hampton High School and attended East Tennessee State College. He served in the United States Army. He was a retired Tool & Die Maker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Navel Whitehead, Two Sisters: Crystal Johnson and Hazel Malone and two infant brothers. He was a Member and Deacon of Morgan Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years: Dale Roberts Whitehead. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late James M. & Maxine Campbell Stout. Marie was a 1963 graduate of Hampton High School. She retired from Quillen Rehab Hospital as an Operator. She was an avid bowler for over 25 years. She had won several trophies from several sections of the country. She also loved to fish. Marie loved to collect pocketbooks. She was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Sherry Ollinger and her husband J.R.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years: Dale Johnson. A daughter & son-in-law: Stephanie & Roger Godsey. Two brothers: Dennis Stout & wife Nancy, and David “Duck” Stout & wife Toni. 3618 HAMPTON - Michael Eugene "Gene" Smith, 83, of Hampton, TN, went to his heavenly home on 25 July 2019, after a brief illness.

He was born in Cardens Bluff to the late Clarence Condred and Mary Campbell Smith. Gene was employed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation, Engineering Division for over 31 years, where he was known as 'Rigger'. After his retirement from TDoT, he continued in construction another five years, working for Summers and Taylor.

Gene was a member of Rittertown Baptist Church where over the years he served as deacon, church treasurer, trustee, Sunday School Director, and sang in the choir. He also served on the house and grounds committee as well as church custodian. He loved to serve others whether giving of food from his garden, handy man repairs, or mowing someone's lawn. Hobbies included deer hunting, fishing, and restoring antique furniture. He too, delivered meals to the shut-ins in the Hampton area for Meals on Wheels.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Tafeda Payne and Dorthy Ramsey, brother Gordon Jay Smith, a nephew Gordon Smith, and a niece Dani Payne Colbaugh.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Shirley (Teague); three sons Michael and wife Robin (Honeycutt) of Hampton, Jeffrey and wife Jill (Halcomb) of Somerset, KY, and Joseph and wife Angel (Wright) of Batesburg, SC; three grandchildren, Caleb and wife Domonique (Goodwin) of Johnson City, and Isaac and Faith of Batesburg; one great grandson Lincoln of Johnson City; a brother George and wife Pauline (Honeycutt) Smith and several nieces & nephews.

Visitation will be held at Rittertown Baptist Church, Monday, 29 July at 12:00 pm followed by funeral services at 2:00 PM with Pastor Richard Stout and Bro Dean Smith officiating. Special music will be provided by Mary Roberts and Tom Little. Interment will be in the church cemetery following the service.

3619 HAMPTON - Mr. Billy D. Stevens, age 78, of Hampton, passed away on Friday, September 7, 2018, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness.

He was born in Elizabethton and was a son of the late Charles Ray and Anne Beryl Archer Stevens. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Joseph Ray Stevens, James Foster Stevens, Archer Nelson Stevens and a brother-in-law, Clyde Poarch. Mr. Stevens was of the Freewill Baptist Faith.

Those left to cherish his memory include a brother, Lee Roy Stevens (Marlene), of Seattle, WA; three sisters, Hattie Bell Poarch, of Elizabethton; Peggy Stevens, of Hampton; Mary Lou Livingston (Richard), of Elizabethton; a special niece, Sue Pierce, of Elizabethton; and a special friend, Lee Garland of Hampton. Several other nieces and nephews also survive.

3620 HAMPTON - Mr. Timothy Zane (Candy Man) Loveless, age 63, Hampton, TN went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 from his residence. Zane was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and was a friend to everyone. Zane was a graduate of Happy Valley High School and retired from the Johnson City Police Department after twenty-eight and ½ years of service. He also served as Chairman of the Carter County Republican Party and as a Carter County Commissioner. Zane was a member of Zion Baptist Church of Elizabethton and was a member of the Johnson City Elks Lodge.

He was a native of Elizabethton, TN and was the son of the late Stacy and Ossie Loveless. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Janice Loveless and Kay Vance and a brother, Tommy Loveless. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of forty-four years, Patty Radford Loveless, of the home; two daughters, Becky Loveless and Cassandra Vaughan and her husband Josh; a son, Nicholas Loveless, all of Elizabethton, TN; four grandchildren, Autumn Surcey and husband Tim, Jonathan McAllister, Nicholas Loveless and Carl Loveless and two great-grandchildren, Bentley Surcey and Jordan Surcey. 3621 HAMPTON - Mr. Vearl Samuel Julian, age 91, of Hampton, died Friday, August 11, 2017 at Hermitage Health Care in Elizabethton.

He was the last living child of the late Monroe and Hattie Whitehead Julian. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Martha Roberson Julian in 2000; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Wayne Honeycutt; a son-in-law, Perry Bradford; and 15 brothers and sisters.

Vearl was the oldest living Charter Member and Deacon of Sunset Free Will Baptist Church. He was a 64 year member of the Hampton Masonic Lodge #750 F&AM. He proudly served his country during World War II, having served in the United States Army, 778th Tank Battalion and was present at the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Having left home at an early age to join the Army, he along with several others, were honored in a special ceremony in 2001, where they were presented with their high school diploma. He never met a stranger, could always come up with a wise ole' saying and was quick to tell you of his Army travels, his love for his family and the Lord. He was a truck driver for TVA for 33 years and retired in 1988 to travel the country with Martha to multiple gospel and bluegrass music festivals in their motorhome.

Left to cherish his memory are his son and daughter-in-law, John and Mary Jo Julian; and his daughters and son-in-law, Patsy and Harry "B" Crow of Hampton and Sue Bradford, of Elizabethton; grandchildren: Kristi and Jeff Smith of Hampton, Robin and Lynn Honeycutt, of Elizabethton, Renay and Duane Estep and Greg Honeycutt, of Michigan; great grandchildren: Elijah and Hannah Smith, Masie, Janie and Julianne Honeycutt, Kyle and Julie Estep and Brent and Martha Estep; great grandchildren: Preston, Wyatt and Brennon Estep and awaiting the arrival of Emmalyn Estep.

She was the daughter of the late James Daniel and Emma White Johnson. Faye was a homemaker and she attended the Hampton Church of God. She enjoyed going to yard sales and quilting.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of Cordia Ellen Hazelwood Harmon Berry and the late Bobby Ray Harmon & the late Billy Jack Berry. Ray was a graduate of Hampton High School. He was a former Butcher at Browns Supermarket, former owner of Cole’s Tackle Box and a Machine Operator at Colorworks. Ray was an avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing and marksmanship. He also loved spending time with friends on Dennis Cove Mountain. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. In addition to his Father & Stepfather, he was preceded in death by a sister: Bobbi Harmon.

He was born in Carter County to the late Banium F McKinney Sr and Elsie Stevens McKinney. Rev. McKinney was the minister at Crabtree FWB, Roan Mountain, TN and was the Pastor of several other churches during his more than 35 years of ministry, where he made many wonderful friends and memories. A funeral service to honor the life of Reverend Banium Floyd McKinney Jr will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, September 14, 2021 at Simerly Creek Believers Fellowship Church, 806 Simerly Creek Road. The family will receive friends prior to the service on Tuesday from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The graveside service will immediately follow in the McKinney Cemetery with Pastor Jim Holtsclaw, Reverend Terry Richardson and Reverend Bo Perkins officiating.

3627 HAMPTON - Rex Leslie Hughes, 85, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at the VA Medical Center in Hampton. He was a native of Frank, N.C., and a resident of Hampton since 1951. He was a member of the Mountain View Freewill Baptist Church.
As a teenager, Rex began working in the conservation corp before joining the Army in 1943. During his military career he was a heavy machine gunner and squad leader and obtained the rank of Staff Sergeant. During the many battles between the borders of France and Germany, Rex became a POW of the German army in 1945. After leaving the military, he began work at the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock as a shipfitter in the X11 Department, and retired in the 1980's after a career spanning more than 30 years.
Rex is preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Marie Hughes, and six sisters.
He is survived by his sons, Hubert J. Hughes and wife, Sara, Larry M. Hughes and wife, Carrington, and Allen K. Hughes and partner, Dwayne; his grandchildren, Angela Stevens, Jason Hughes, Heather Hughes, Courtney Gonzalez-Vega, Allen K. Hughes II, and Lesli A. Hughes; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, Jan. 6, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Parklawn– Wood Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life service will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Jan. 7, at 2 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Bert Rait. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Park.

3628 HAMPTON - Richard "Arnold" Hughes, age 76, of Hampton went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 2, 2018 from the Hermitage Health Center.

Arnold was born in Carter County to the late David N. Hughes, Sr. and Dealie Stephens Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Flo Hughes; two brothers, Robert Lee Hughes and David Hughes, Jr.; and a sister, Sophina Ware.

Arnold was a loving husband, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and a lifelong friend to many. He graduated from Hampton High School, where he played basketball and was part of the 1960 basketball team that won the State Championship. Arnold retired from General Motors as an assembly worker and was a member of Sunset Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and as an assistant Sunday school teacher of the adult class. Arnold loved fishing and was an avid fisherman. He was also very devoted to his church and his church family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Dianne L. Morelock Hughes, of the home; three daughters, Brenda Morelock, of Elizabethton, Amy Gouge and husband Jason, of Hampton and Gina Hatfield, of Crossville, TN; a son, Rob Rhea and wife Jama, of Auburn, IN; a sister, Joan Hathaway, of Old Fort, NC; his grandchildren, Joshua Crumley, Megan Slagle and husband Bo, Gabriel Gouge, Charles Baines, Breely Taylor and husband Todd, T.J. A service to honor and celebrate the life of Richard Arnold Hughes will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Sunday, November 4, 2018 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. 3629 HAMPTON - Richard "Fred" Tucker, Sr., age 92, of Hampton, passed away on Sunday, December 30, 2018 at Hillview Rehab Clinic.

He was the son of the late David and Callie Tucker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Kate Snavely; a sister, Helen Smith, two step-brothers, Hunter and Brian Tucker; and two step-sisters, Lessie and Ollie Mae.

In December 1944, Fred left high school to enlist in the Army. He served in the European Theater during World War II as an infantry rifleman in Company L, 14th Infantry, 71st Infantry Division in General Patton's 3rd Army, landing in France and fighting across Europe. He was awarded the combat Infantry Badge, Victory Medal WWII, European Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars and Good Conduct Medals.

Fred was a 1945 graduate of Elizabethton High School where he played football in 1943-1944. He was recruited for UT on a scholarship but turned it down to attend Milligan College.

Mr. Tucker had been the District Manager for American National Insurance and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Elizabethton. He enjoyed UT football games, Elizabethton Twins baseball games, fishing, hunting and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Florence Tucker; one son, Fredie Tucker (Debbie); two daughters, Kathy Bradshaw (Bill) and Sandi Tucker, all of Memphis; one brother, David Tucker (Liz), of Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Ricky (Dana), Nathan, Jennifer (Kevin) and Lindsay; two great grandchildren, Kate and Knox; a step-son, Tyson Garrison (Jean); three step daughters; and five step grandchildren.

A service to celebrate the life of Richard "Fred" Tucker, Sr. will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Todd Hallman and Rev. 3631 HAMPTON - Ruby Pearl Cates Calhoun, 90, Hampton, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2016, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

Born October 26, 1925, in Carter County to the late George Edward and Amelia Kate Crowe Cates. She was a graduate of Hampton High School. Pearl was retired as a Bookkeeper with Browns Supermarket & Hardware. She had been employed there for several years. Pearl was an active member of the Hampton Christian Church and the Home Builders Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Carolyn Perry Church Circle and a member of the Hampton Garden Club.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, George Edward Cates, Jr. and Clyde C. Cates; and also a sister, Hazel Heaton.

3632 HAMPTON - Shonette Mardell Tolley, age 81, of Hampton went home to be with the Lord on Sunday July 24, 2016. She was born January 19, 1935 in Akron, Ohio to Frank & Lillian Cutlip.

Shonette was a graduate of Hampton High School and was retired from the United States Postal Service. She was an active member of Rittertown Baptist Church where she had served as Minister of Music for many years.

Mrs. Tolley was preceded in death by her father, Frank Cutlip; her sister Rannell Orefield and her granddaughter, Amber Shaw Calhoun.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Herman Tolley; her mother, Lillian Cutlip; sons, Keith and Leon (Rebecca) and daughter, Patty; granddaughters, Tracy Guy (Jeff) and Tammy Jordan; grandsons, Mitchell, R.J. and Ezra; great-grandchildren, Lane and Timber Shaw, Jeffrey, River and Rudy Guy, brother, Charles Cut lip (JoAnn); and special friends, Garry Smith and Shrill Davis and Simon.

3633 HAMPTON - Sylvia “Joyce” Cable, age 92, of Hampton, Tennessee went home to join her Lord and Savior, her husband and her wonderful sons on Monday, November 15, 2021 at her home. Joyce was born in Johnson County, Tennessee to the late William Storie and Amerzee McCloud Storie. In addition to her parents, Joyce was also preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Hollis Cable; two sons, Tim Cable and William Freddie Cable; ten brothers and sisters; and two grandsons, Kory McKinney and Timothy Arthur Cable, II.
Joyce was a beautiful, kind and loving soul who loved her family and God. She was full of strength and encouragement and always had wise words to give. Joyce was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church and stood tall with strength in God and her family. She was the best mother and always knew what those around her needed and would take care of anyone around her. She had worked in the food department of Kmart. Joyce was known as the Queen of the “One Liners” and loved to show her love through food, hugs and touching those who needed her most.
Those left to continue Joyce’s legacy and cherish her wonderful memory include her daughter, Valerie Cable McKinney; her grandsons, Kristopher McKinney and Trevor Cable; her granddaughters, Amy Love Kemp, Alison Edwards, Andrea Cable and Adrianne Vandiver; two great grandsons, Corbin Edwards, Owen Kemp; her great granddaughter, Avery Edwards; her daughter –in –law, Christinia Cable; and several nieces and nephews who loved her dearly.

3634 HAMPTON - V. I. "Rex" Vance, 88, Hampton, joined his loving wife of 64 years, Ruby, in heaven on Friday, June 9, 2017 at Hillview Health Center in Elizabethton.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Sherman and Ruth Winters Vance. V I was born and raised in the Tiger Valley community. He served in the United States National Guard and worked for Fisher Body in Flint, Michigan and retired from Burleson Construction, Johnson City, TN. He was a charter member and elder of the Old Horseshoe Freewill Baptist Church, Elizabethton. He was an avid UT Vol Fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Eva Vance, a son, Michael Harold Vance, three brothers: Deward, Sterling and Sherman Vance, Jr. and three sisters: Sylvia Miller, Bernice Vance, and Jewel Holtsclaw Edmisten.

Survivors include one son, Joseph D. Vance, Deltona, Florida, one granddaughter, Monica Vance Phillips and husband Jason, Elizabethton, and one great-grandson, Samuel Phillips. Three Sisters: Opal Jarrett, Inez Johnson and Mary L. Bunten, and two Brothers: Ray, and Rev. John Vance. Several nieces & nephews.

Graveside Services and Interment will be at 12 noon Tuesday, June 13, 2017 in the Old Horseshoe Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Greg Whitehead and Rev. John Vance officiating. 3635 HAMPTON - Velma E. Tester, 74, of Hampton, went home to be with her Lord, on Sunday, February 5, 2017, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. She was the daughter of the late William Oscar and Merle Hicks Morton and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glen O. Tester, on June 22, 2010.

Mrs. Tester was a life time member of Union Baptist Church in Hampton where she served the church faithfully as a Sunday School teacher and a choir member. She loved to watch movies on the Hallmark Channel, and taking trips to Gatlinburg. She loved to spend time with her family and attend services at her church.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Scott Tester, and his wife, Rebecca, Hampton; four grandchildren, Marissa Marie Tester, Mark Scott Tester, Cody Ryan Keene, Dave Newton Ramey; a sister, Glenda Ranshaw, and her husband, Rev. Doug Ranshaw; brother-in-law, Richard Tester, and his wife, Betty, all of Hampton; three nieces, Tiffany Arnett, Amy Lowe, Amanda Blair; and a nephew, Travis Ranshaw. 3636 HAMPTON - Von Austin Fritts, 79, Hampton passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018 in the Johnson City Medical after a brief illness.

A native of Butler, he was a son of the late Robert Lee & Donnie Elkins Fritts. Von was a retired employee of Nor-Well Company. He loved fishing and "Loafing" with his buddies.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years: Elsie Simerly Fritts. Two Children: James "Jim" Fritts & Wife Donna, Elizabethton and Reba Shreve & husband Gregory, Matthews, North Carolina. His Grandchildren: Robbie Fritts, Christopher Shreve , Whitney Shreve, Chris Fuller and wife Melissa and Robert Fuller. His Great Grandchildren: Dylan, Haylee, Alexis, Makenzie, Ashton and Chelsea Fuller. His brother: Harold Fritts and wife Priscilla, Alexandria, Virginia. His Sister: Mary Colbert, Butler. 3637 HAMPTON - Walter France Andrews, Sr., age 92 of Hampton, TN, passed away on Saturday, January 7, 2023. He was born in Butler, TN on June 22, 1930 to the late Wheeler and Elizabeth Finney Andrews. Walter was raised in the Cobbs Creek and Bunton Town communities.

In 1955 he married Betty ‘Noletta’ Campbell and began 67 years of marriage and family. He found work in Akron, OH with Akron Plating Company. After seven years in Ohio, he returned his family “home” to Tennessee where they settled in Hampton. Walter worked for Wright and Lopez Construction, Hanley Structures and North American Rayon. In the late 1970’s he began working for East Tennessee State University in Facilities. Over twenty years he worked as a carpenter, plumber and painter. He enjoyed his work at ETSU and made many friends across campus. His three daughters, also ETSU employees, are still met with the question, “How’s your Dad?”

Walter loved golf and was always the team designated putter. He taught his sons the game and loved traveling to Myrtle Beach with them and a host of friends for friendly weekend tournaments. These men loved Walter, and everyone wanted “Pappy” on their team.

As a child, Walter attended many singing schools and learned the shape note method of music. He became a tenor signer at a young age. Later he became a great bass singer and sang with several local gospel groups and friends including Gib Hardin and Mack Holloway. He was song leader at Pearce Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, where he was a member, for many years.

In addition to his wife, Walter is survived by daughters Theresa Marlow, Johnson City, Patti Marlow (Randy) Elizabethton, Robin Grindstaff (Edward) Elizabethton; sons Jeff Andrews (Cindy Hopson) Johnson City, Walter Andrews, Jr (Karla) Hampton. His greatest joys were his ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Also surviving are brothers James and Lloyd ‘Pete’ Andrews of Elizabethton; brother-in-law Bearl Campbell (Pat) Butler, sister-in-law Brenda Schenck (Don) Johnson City, several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Beloved son, Robert Paul Andrews, proceeded Walter in death on September 18, 2022. In addition to his parents, Walter was also proceeded in death by brothers, Perry, D.L. and Claude Andrews and sisters Maude Cummins, Tudy Wallace, Mary Cable and Ruth Andrews.

Special thanks to the nurses and staff at Abundant Christian Living Community for the wonderful care they gave our husband and father during his brief stay.

Walter was a solid citizen, hard worker and a great Dad. He enjoyed life. He will be greatly missed but we know that he and Robert are now rejoicing in Heaven.

A celebration of life service for Walter France Andrews, Sr. will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Greg Largent officiating. She was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Henry and Ida Cornette Stevens. She was a retired nursing assistant at Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

Born November 25, 1925, in Avery County, North Carolina to the late Roy E. Calhoun and Oma Johnson Cheyney. Raymond was a proud World War II veteran who served in the United States Navy. He served in both the European and Pacific Theaters on the USS Chinaberry, a net tender ship. He was retired as a supervisor with Unisys Corporation, Bristol. Raymond was an active member and elder emeritus of the Hampton Christian Church and a lifetime member of Hampton Masonic Lodge 750.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl Cates Calhoun; five brothers, Roy Calhoun, Jr., Edgar Calhoun, Russell Calhoun, John Calhoun, and Harvey Calhoun; one sister, Jerry Ann Calhoun.

3645 HAMPTON — Carl Dean "Bill" Estep, 85, 172 Oscar Johnson Road, Hampton, passed away Tuesday, September 13, 2011, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late James Wesley and Flossie White Estep. He was a Civil Engineer with the State of Tennessee for over fifty years. He received an Outstanding Service Achievement Award that was presented by the Governor of the state of Tennessee.

Bill was a longtime member of the Union Baptist Church, where he had served as a Deacon for several years and had served in several different areas of the church. He gave many volunteer hours of his time and resources.

He loved horses, four wheeling and was an avid bicyclist. At age 71, he rode a bicycle across the state of Georgia to help raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Stanley Estep; three sisters: Majolen Ward, Ora White and Iva Holder; and five nephews: Burle Estep, Sammy Lee White, David Jackson, Ross Jackson and Greg Deloach.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Henry B. and Frances Bertie Scalf Estep. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation. In his earlier years Mr. Estep played semi-pro baseball with the Valley Forge Reds that was organized in 1938, disbanded during the war years and later became the Unaka League. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He served in the United States Army during World War II.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hattie Crowe Estep, December 31, 2001; by a son, Russell Estep; a great granddaughter, Ashley Younce; two sisters: Edith Estep and Sweetie Lyons; and a brother: Warren Estep.

She was a member of the Little Mountain Baptist Church. Her hobbies were shopping and sewing.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Butler who died in 1984; by four brothers, Lawrence, Gene, Vernon and Darrell Whitehead; and three sisters, Voretta and Ruth Hill and infant Joyce Elizabeth Hill.

She was also preceded in death by her husband Conley Jerome Stevens, Sr.; by two grandchildren, Connie Bowers and Melissa Bowers; and three sons-in-law, Terry Hill, Billy Dan Harrell and Randy McKinney; two brothers, Bruce McKinney and Jack McKinney.

Luster was a life time member of Oak Hill Free Will Baptist Church and the oldest member of the church. She loved working in her flowers and visits from her children and grandchildren.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Fannie Cornett Fulton. Mrs. Bowers was a member of Union Baptist Church and was retired from North American Rayon Corporation.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Herman Johnson, second husband, Floyd Bowers, and three sisters, Elsie Fulton, Ruby Honeycutt and Helen Pearce.

Survivors are her son and daughter-in-law, Daniel Andrew and Marsha Ann Johnson, grandson, Aaron Ezekiel Johnson, all of Hampton, three sisters, Ruth Adcox, Elizabethton, Shirley Hardin and Virginia McGee, both of North Carolina, and two brothers, Ken Fulton and Bill Fulton, both of North Carolina; special friends from Stockton Residential Home, June Henson, Katina Street, Bunny Frakes, Rena Lee Whitehead, Maradell Hughes, Diana Stockton, Leroy and LouElla Stockton and Carolyn Tester.
