Jack R. Hathaway Jack R. Hathaway, 78, 919 S. Second Street, Elizabethton, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an unexpected illness. Mr. Hathaway was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Hobart and Elizabeth Holly Hathaway. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond Hathaway and Jimmy Hathaway. Mr. Hathaway was a retired employee of the Tennessee State Department of Employment Security and was of the Christian faith. He was a United States Air Force Veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Juanita Deloach Hathaway, of the home; three daughters, Ann Shurgin and Sue Zebrowski, both of Houston, Texas, and Melinda Hathaway, Scottsdale, Ariz.; a sister, Margaret Manley, Elizabethton; four brothers, Terry Hathaway and Earl Hathaway, both of Florida, Tony Hathaway, Elizabethton, and Burl Hathaway, of Indiana; and four grandchildren, Miriam Zebrowski, Rachael Zebrowski and Joshua Shurgin, all of Houston, Texas, and Sarah Shurgin, Austin, Texas. 3508 GRAY - Barbara Jean Tipton, 83 of Gray, passed away Monday, January 9, 2023, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

Barbara was born in Kingsport, Tennessee, but lived most of her life in Washington County, TN. She was the daughter of the late Earl and Maude Rogers Medlin.

Barbara was a homemaker but spent her happiest days babysitting her 5 precious grandchildren.

Barbara’s home become the gathering place for the family upon the death of her parents. She loved spending time with her family, and her family “loved” when Barbara cooked. Having cooked in her brother’s restaurant for several years, she was a culinary expert. Barbara was loved by all who had the privilege to know her. Her passing will leave such a void in so many lives.

Barbara attended Boones Creek Methodist Church in Gray, Tennessee.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Rufus Tipton, two sisters, LaVada (Vada) Medlin, Portia Medlin Burgess and three brothers; Joe Medlin, James W. Medlin and Verlin Medlin.

Survivors include her daughter, Cindy (Rodney) Harrell and son, Lanny (Bobbi) Tipton. Five Grandchildren, Cole (Lindsey) Tipton, Dr. Payton Tipton, Parker Tipton, Ethan Harrell and Easton Harrell. One great granddaughter, Ivy Pearl Tipton. Brother, Leroy (Ellen Jane) Medlin and Sister, Sandra Medlin, as well as several special nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. Her dear life-long friends, Thomas and Shirley Tilson.

3509 GRAY - Bobbie L. Moody, age 84 of Gray, Tennessee, went home to her heavenly father on Friday, September 24, 2021 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Paul and Edna Trivett Bacon, born to them on March 8, 1937 in Holston Valley, Tennessee. She attended the Harmony Baptist Church. Bobbie loved nature, and would spend much of her time watching animals in her yard, some of which she would name. Her love of music, especially hymns was very special to her, but not as special as the love she had for her children and grandchildren. Bobbie united in marriage to G.C. Moody and to this union 3 children were born.

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband G.C. Moody, her son Ashley Moody, and a brother, Homer Bacon.

Bobbie is survived by her loving children; Eric Moody, and Crystal Moody Bowers (Keith), a brother, Billy Bacon (Margie), two grandchildren, Wyatt and Tara Bowers. She is also survived by many other relatives and friends left behind to cherish her memory.

Funeral services for Bobbie L. Moody, will be conducted on Tuesday, September 28, 2021 at 7:00 P.M. in the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services with Rev. Steve Pate officiating.

The Moody family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening after 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M.

A committal and interment service for Bobbie will be held on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. in the Gray Cemetery with Keith Bowers, Wyatt Bowers, Steven Bowers, Robbie Bacon and Brian Bacon serving as pallbearers.

3510 GRAY - Bobby Lee Tucker, age 63, of Gray went home to be with the Lord Thursday October 14, 2021 at his home in Gray. Bobby was born September 18, 1958. He was the son of the late Warren G and Josie Wilson Tucker of Gray. Bobby enjoyed his dog Chico and visits from his family. He was a kind soul, and many will miss him.
He was preceded in death by his brothers John Bishop, Michael Tucker, Dicky Tucker, Ricky Tucker, Teddy Tucker and sisters Betty Tucker, Mary Harshbarger and 2 infant sisters.
Those left to cherish his memory include: three brothers; Dean and wife Jane Tucker, Warren G. Jr and wife Shirley Tucker and Steve and wife Marilyn Tucker, also several nieces, nephews, and cousins. 3511 GRAY - Carolyn Ann Wyatt (Phipps), 76, of Gray, TN passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 14, 2023 surrounded by her family. Carolyn was a lifelong resident of Gray. She was the daughter of William and Ethel Phipps. Carolyn was a homemaker and a cook second to none. She loved cooking large meals for her family. She also enjoyed going to yard sales and collecting angels. Carolyn was a second Mother to many children in the family. She attended Fountain of Life Bible Church prior to her illness.

Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, William and Ethel Phipps; her brothers, Coy Phipps, Millard Phipps, Willard Phipps, Charles William “Bill” Phipps, Carmon Phipps and Allen Phipps; her sisters, Etta Phipps Richardson, Dorothy Phipps Greenburg, Annetta Phipps and Lynda Phipps; and her beloved dog, Bo.

Survivors include her loving husband of 56 years, Morris Wyatt; son and his wife, Craig and Juanita Wyatt; granddaughter and her husband, Logan Doan (Wyatt) and David; brother, Adrian Phipps; sister, Evelyn Chesser; sister and her husband, Jeannette Honeycutt and Daryl; several nieces and nephews; and her dog, Mattie.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday, January 17, 2023 at Tetrick Funeral Services Chapel of Johnson City. The funeral service will follow at 8 PM with Dr. Victor Young officiating. The graveside committal will take place at 12 PM on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at Washington County Memory Gardens. 3512 GRAY - Dana Willis, 75, Gray passed away Saturday, February 2, 2019 in the Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness.

A native of Hampton, he was a son of the late Joseph Avery & Myrtle Ruth Tolley Willis. He was a 1963 graduate of Hampton High School. He served in the United States Navy. Dana was retired from Tennessee Eastman as a Chemical Operator. He was a member of the USS Yorktown CV-10 Association and the Elizabethton Senior Citizens. He was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years: Mary Etta Caldwell Willis, who died April 19, 2015 and by a brother, Albert Willis.

Survivors include his Children: Dana Andrew "Andy" (Janis Malina) Willis, Blountville, Robert Lee (Lindsey Scarlett) Willis, Gray, Jimmy Dale (Delores Louise) Willis, Telford and Charles Joseph (Tina Marie) Willis, Elizabethton. Seven Grandchildren: Justin, Jesse, Susan, Hannah, Brittany, Ella & Avery Willis. One Great Granddaughter: Elizabeth. Two Sisters: Eloise Hyder, Hampton and Glenda Hyatt, Elizabethton. One Brother: Raymond Willis, Elizabethton. Several Nieces & Nephews.

3513 GRAY - David "Clinton" Isenberg, Gray, TN., went to be with his Lord and Savior on the morning of April 20, 2017 at Johnson City Medical Center.

Clinton was born September 23, 1926, and lived most of his 90 years in Gray, Tennessee. He proudly served our country in Japan with the United States Army in WWII. After working years as a welder in many states, he continued his career up to his retirement from Holston Defense, Kingsport. He was a 32nd Degree Mason at the Sinking Creek Masonic Lodge in Gray. He loved his church and attended regularly at Bethany Presbyterian and in his later years at Gray United Methodist until his health declined.

Clinton was the son of the late John and Vertie Mohler Isenberg. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Leslie, Carl and Nick Isenberg and one grandson David Reed.

Left to carry on his loving memory is his wife and best friend of 67 years Arliss; two daughters, Kathey Reed and husband Rick and Brenda Vaughan; grandchildren: Stacy and Tammy Vaughan, Holly Vaughan, and Chris Reed; great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Nevaeh Reed. He shared so many special memories with his wonderful sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law and with countless dear relatives and friends.

The family would like to extend a very special thank you to the doctors, nurses and medical staff at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Johnson City, as well as, a heartfelt thank you to the wonderful caregivers and sitters for the past year and a half. You were truly a blessing to all of us. Thank you also Pastor and friend Lloyd Jones and our church friends for your prayers and visits.

My husband, our daddy, our papaw and friend we will truly miss your joking and loving way!

3514 GRAY - Dennis Lee Bradley, 66, of Gray, passed away on Friday, March 4th, 2022, at his home following a long battle with cancer.
He was a native of Johnson City, son of the late Lee Roy Bradley and Mabel Lewis Bradley.
Dennis was a man who loved to work with his hands. He made his living as a machinist, tool & die maker, but was best described as jack-of-all-trades. He was a lifelong tinkerer who was always working on something; if it was too broke for him to fix, it probably wasn’t fixable.
Those surviving include: wife, Annie Cox Bradley, married since August 10th, 1974; daughter, Amanda Proffitt and husband Ryan; sisters, Alice Rateau and husband Joe, Linda Myers and husband Bruce, Lois Tipton and husband Ron; grandchildren, Ariana Bradley and Colby Proffitt; and many more nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family of Dennis Bradley will receive friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday, March 7, 2022, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A committal service will be held the following day at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, March 8, 2022, at Washington County Memory Gardens. 3515 GRAY - Emily Matherly Sluss, 81, Gray, a loving wife and companion, went to be with the Lord onTuesday, July 10, 2018. She was the daughter of World War I veteran Walter Henry Matherly, who was deployed in France at this point in time 100 years ago.

He and her mother Olivia Jane Crouch Matherly preceded her to Heaven, along with her sisters Virginia Matherly Glass and Gladys Matherly Wexler. Emily was descended from early pioneers of Washington County, TN who were Revolutionary War soldiers; Jesse Crouch, Jessee Duncan and Kinchen Kelly. Emily is survived by her husband of 57 years, Lowell Sluss and little companion Gracie. She is also survived by four nieces, Carolyn Hodges, Ruth Ann Willis, Betty Widener and Joyce Tiller; five nephews, David Wexler, Charles (Shorty) Glass, Kenneth Glass, Gary Glass and Mike Glass and two cousins, James (Bluegill) Matherly and Iva Lee Crouch Adams; two special great nieces, Jennifer Hodges and Kimberly Edwards.

Emily was a public school teacher earning her degrees from East Tennessee State Teachers College. She accompanied her husband from duty station to duty station teaching school in Washington County, TN, Forestville, MD, Nashville public schools, and Camp Lejeune Base elementary school. She completed her career in Johnson City, TN at Town Acres from 1973-1995. Emily especially loved her little pets who gave her love and companionship. They were Shannon, Inky, Heidi and the present one Gracie.

A special thank you to caregivers Monica Mitchell and Alishia A.J. Heatherly, who attended Emily at home. The family is indebted to those who conduct the services, Dr. Gene Lasley, Rev. Toonie Cash, Rev. Gary Seaman and Appalachian Funeral Home. Also a special thanks to neighbors, friends and family for their flowers, food, and support during Emily's illness.

The funeral service will be conducted Friday, July 13, 2018, at 7PM in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 5PM to 7PM prior to the service. 3516 GRAY - Glea R Dunbar, 83, of Gray, TN, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2022, at his home. He was the son of the late Ralph and Mayme Dunbar. Glea was born in Chuckey, TN, but resided in the Boones Creek area for most of his adult years.
Glea was of the Christian faith and was a member of Boones Creek Baptist Church. Glea retired from Pepsi after 35 years of service. Glea loved to golf and was a huge fan of the Lady Vols and the Atlanta Braves.
Glea was preceded in death by his parents, his brother George Dunbar, and his sister Wanda Jones.
Glea is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Brenda Little Dunbar of the home; son, Craig Dunbar (Jennifer) of Jonesborough, TN; daughters, Amy Greene (Steve) of Bristol, TN, and Wendy Minnich (Shawn) of Rockwall, TX; four grandchildren, Alicia & Ryan Minnich, Cassidy Dunbar, and Ali Greene; a very close family friend, Virginia Barnes; and several nieces and nephews.

3517 GRAY - Jack S. Fletcher, 86, of Gray, TN passed away on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Johnson City Medical Center after a long illness. Jack was born on February 17, 1931 in Elizabethton, TN to the late Dora Fletcher Peters. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Bynum Peters. Jack was a Sargent in the United States Air Force and a manager of Anderson Steel in South Carolina. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Johnson City. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Helen, and his devoted son, Steve. He is also survived by his brothers, Russell and wife Bonnie, Willard and wife Joy, Roscoe and wife Lynetta, and Norman; his sisters, Joyce Grindstaff, Jeanette Bowers, and Lena Peters; brother-in-law, Charles and his wife Sharon; Sisters-in-law, Ruth and husband E.T., Betty Jo and husband Emerson; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

3518 GRAY - James "Jimmy" S. Heaton, 78, Gray, passed away Sunday, April 21, 2019, at Life Care Center of Gray.

Jimmy was born on August 25, 1940, in Johnson City, to the late France and Martha Buchanan Heaton.

Jimmy was of the Baptist faith. He retired from Benjamin Moore Paint in Chicago, IL.

In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by: two sisters, Grace Troxwell and Christine Dove; and six brothers, Bill, Lon, Carl, Paul, Lee and Patrick Heaton.

Survivors include: one sister, Nell Feathers; two daughters, Donna and Sandra Heaton; and many nieces and nephews.

Special thank you to Life Care Center of Gray, Caris Hospice and the many nurses and doctors that attended to Jimmy over the years.

3519 GRAY - James G. Brummett, 91, Gray, died unexpectedly Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at Franklin Woods Community Hospital, following a brief illness.

James was a native of Unicoi County, former resident of Erwin, and lived in Flat Rock, Michigan most of his life before moving to Gray in 1992.

He was a son of Henry Austin and Martha Phillips Brummett.

James was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran.

He retired in 1986 from the Chrysler Corporation where he worked as a machine operator for thirty-five and a half years. James was a longtime member of the United Auto Workers Local #372, Trenton, MI.

He was a member of Boones Creek Baptist Church and the Adult Men's Sunday School Class.

In Addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred "Millie" Gortney Brummett, in 2016, an infant daughter, Karen Brummett, three brothers, infant Lindy Brummett, Joseph Galbraith and Robert Austin Brummett, two sisters, Vearl Helton and Uteta Harris.

He is survived by his son, John W. Brummett and wife Cheryl, Brownsville, TX; his daughter, Billie Jo Shutters, El Cajon, CA; six grandchildren, Rebekah Brummett Hawk, Flat Rock, MI, Lisah Brummett DeSenglau, Chesterfield, MI, Janel Brummett Takacs, Southgate, MI, Beth Coon Long, El Cajon, CA, Jimmy Brummett, Portland, OR, and Jackie Bolam Walker, Lincoln, MI; thirteen great-grandchildren, Hayden, Trinity, Gavin, Kai, Collin, Avery, River, Jasmine, Riker, Lily, Connor, Nora and Hunter; several nieces and nephews; close family friend, Cora Beaumont.

The funeral service will be conducted Saturday, May 25, 2019, at 1:30 P.M., from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, with Rev. Kenneth Kyker, officiating.

The graveside committal service will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Erwin, with Rev. Jason Royston officiating. Pallbearers will be Jimmy Brummett, Jim Takacs, Ron Bray, Fred Malone, Bill Riddle, Mike Chapman and Johnny Fields.

3520 GRAY - James Harley Love, 83, of Gray, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at LifeCare Center of Gray following an extended illness.

James was born in Erwin, Tennessee to Theodore R. Love, Sr. and Nellie Melissa Stover Love. He was a graduate of Unicoi County High School and the University of Tennessee. His early life on the family's dairy farm, along with his degree in agriculture, laid the foundation for a career in wholesale dairy sales and other agriculture-related fields.

A life-long Christian, James served in leadership positions of several Christian churches and organizations in East Tennessee. He volunteered his time for Appalachian Christian Village, Smoky Mountain Christian Men's Fellowship, Samaritan's Purse shoebox ministry, among others.

James never met a stranger. He loved talking with people, getting to know them and their interests. He developed many lasting friendships through his caring ways and heartfelt actions.

James was preceded in death by his parents and brothers: Robert, Clarence, David, Stanley, and John Doran, and his daughter, Beth Ann Love. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Polly Marie Osburn Love, daughters Janet Richard and husband Russ of Knoxville, Melissa (Missy) Martin and husband Roger of Gray, and son James (Jimmy) Love and wife Martha of Gray, seven grandchildren: Christopher Richard, Meagan Hopson and husband Chris, Kelly Richard, Caroline Good, Andrew Martin, Annie Love, and Hayden Good, one great-grandchildren: Emily Hopson; and brother, T. R. "Ted" Love, Jr. and wife Peggy; along with several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Life Care Center of Gray for the wonderful loving care given to our father.

A celebration of life service will be held at Boones Creek Christian Church on Thursday, August 1, 2019 beginning at 6:30 PM with Minister David Clark officiating. 3521 GRAY - James Z. Hagy, 84, of the Gray Community, exchanged this earthly home for his eternal heavenly home on August 15, 2021, at HVMC in Kingsport, TN after an extended illness.

Jim to his friends, Jimmy to his family, was the youngest of 5 children, born to the late Walter Keller Hagy and Elizabeth James Hagy. As a young boy, he was a member of the Boy Scouts of America, helped his brother Billy and his friends deliver newspapers in their community. During the winter months, he helped his dad on Saturdays, stoke the coal furnaces to warm the church for Sunday services at their home church at Roan Hill Baptist, in Johnson City. Here, he accepted Christ as his personal Savior.

He served his country in the United States Army, and completed his tour of duty in the Military Police office in Richmond, Virginia.

In 1978, he was certified and licensed as an Architectural Hardware Consultant from the Door and Hardware Institute. He was elected to the board of directors of the Associated General Contractors of Tennessee from 1994-1996. In October of 2002, he was awarded life membership in the Door and Hardware Institute.

He was the former owner of The Good Company in Bristol, which is now located in Gray.

He was a member of Boone Trail Baptist Church and was involved in several areas of ministry over the years. He was a graduate of Science Hill High School and attended East Tennessee College, as it was known then. He was a true example of Proverbs 17:17 “a friend loves at all times”. He was a gentle man, a very generous man, loving, and devoted to any, and all, he knew. Our loss is heaven’s gain.

Preceding him in death was 2 sisters, Mable Martin of Johnson City, and Edith Schlotthauer of California.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorena Hagy; one sister, Ruby Musick of Johnson City; one brother, Billy Hagy of Upland, California; one special brother-in-law, Fred Feathers of Kingsport; several nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.

Snyder’s Memorial Gardens in Gray is serving the Hagy family. Visitation is Wednesday, the 18th from 5-7 pm, at Boone Trail Baptist Church, 1985 Carroll Creek Road, Johnson City, TN. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Pastor Dwight Jenkins officiating. Interment will be Thursday, 11:00 am, at East Tennessee Cemetery located in Blountville near the Tri-Cities Airport.

Pallbearers will be Robbie, Bryan, Brent, Jeff, Clinton, and David Feathers.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to his favorite charities: St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis TN; The Vine Ministry in Haiti, c/o The Vine Ministry, P.O. Box 967, Goshen, IN 46527; or his local church, Boone Trail Baptist Church.

3522 GRAY - James “Roy” Hammonds, age 76, of Gray, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 18, 2023.

A lifelong resident of Washington County, Roy was born October 20, 1946, in Johnson City to the late James Ely Hammonds and Mary Margaret Davidson Hammonds.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Roy loved walking and he was known for walking many miles all over the Tri-Cities.

In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Willis.

He is survived by two brothers, Clay Hammonds of Gray and Bill Hammonds of Limestone and special caregiver, Teresa Butler.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Vanessa and Becca with Amedisys Hospice for their care and support.

3523 GRAY - Janis Ruth Bowser Fitzgerald, 85, of Gray, Tennessee, passed away at Life Care of Gray on Friday, December 31, 2021. Janis was born on February 14, 1936, in Washington County, Tennessee to the late Robert Lee and Pearl Hamilton Bowser.
Mrs. Fitzgerald is a native of Sulpher Springs and has lived in the Gray area for 36 years. She graduated from Sulpher Springs Highschool in 1954. She was a member of Gray United Methodist Church and a member of Lively Ladies of Gray United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and volunteering at the church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Billie Joe Fitzgerald; 1 brother, Rob Bowser; 2 sisters, Virginia Bowser Feathers and Imogene Bowser Leedy.
Those left to cherish Janis’s memory include her 3 sons, Lynn Fitzgerald, Joe Fitzgerald & wife Laura and Andy Fitzgerald & wife Erin as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

3524 GRAY - June Chambers Snyder, 77 of Gray, Tennessee, who was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 22nd, 2017.

June was born March 10, 1940 in Elizabethton, Tennessee, a daughter to the late Jim and Elsie Chambers. She met her husband, Bobby Snyder at East Tennessee State University and they were married on June 1, 1960.

June was a loyal member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Gray, Tennessee since 1960. She served her precious Lord and Savior in many ways including Girls in Action, Acteen's, Sunday School Teacher, youth leadership and faithful choir member. June had a long history of working retail including her father's store, Jim Chambers Men's Shoppe, and Belk Department Store in Johnson City, TN.

June loved sharing the Gospel until her failing health affected the things she loved the most but even to the end she never forgot her Jesus. June was known for being a prayer warrior in the church and community. Her love for others was unconditional and she unselfishly gave her time, money and resources. She was always equipping her family to do the same for others. She also had a passion to sit around the kitchen table and talk for hours to her family and friends. Her legacy will live on forever in the hearts and minds of those she influenced.

In addition to her parents, June was preceded in death by her brother, Jimmy Chambers.

June is survived by her husband, Coach Bobby Snyder Sr., sons Bobby Snyder Jr. and wife Natalie of Mooresville, NC, Lance Snyder and wife Michelle of Indian Trail, NC, daughter Summar Simpson and husband Bobby Simpson, of Mount Pleasant, SC. She also leaves behind her sister, Mary Chambers Maddox of Trophy Club, TX and 6 loving grandchildren, Brittney Snyder, Madison Snyder Gilbert and husband Jason, Austin Snyder, Dillon Snyder, Shea Snyder and Isabella Simpson.

Kathy was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee in 1957. She attended King Springs Baptist Church. She loved working in her flowers, yard sales, decorating her home and she was a great cook. Kathy loved spending time with her family as well as her two cats Bella and Moosie.

Kathy was preceded in death by her father, Cecil Maupin; father-in-law, Leeroy Brown; mother-in-law, Virginia France; sister-in-law, Beverly Maupin; nephew, Joshua Maupin and niece, Carly Maupin.

Laura was born on February 16, 1967, in Johnson City, Tennessee, to her father, Harold VanHuss, and her mother, the late Norma Sue Fritz VanHuss.

Laura was a native of Gray, Tennessee, and she lived there all her life. She was a Baptist and a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Gray, Tennessee.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Richard "Dick" & Hazel Crosswhite Shoemake. Margaret had lived most of her life in Mountain City until she moved to Gray 13 years ago to be near her daughter & family. She loved to sew, cross stitch and cook. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Mountain City. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband A.J. Stalcup who died June 4, 1996.

Survivors include her daughter & son-in-law: Tracee & Richard Hyland, Gray. A Granddaughter: Hailey Johnson. A Step-Grandson: Alexander Hyland. Born in Sullivan County Mrs. Graybeal was a resident of Gray and a member of Johnson City Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who will be missed by all.

Preceded in death by her husband Bobby Joe Graybeal -1995; parents John and Ada Ford; sister, Betty Lou Fair; brothers, Johnny Eugene Ford and Larry Richard Ford.

Surviving include her sons, Jerry L. Graybeal and wife Patti of Jonesborough; Terry A. Graybeal of Jonesborough; daughter Tonya G. Jackson and husband Stan of Murfreesboro; sister, Nila Ruth Letterman of Jonesborough; ten grandchildren; several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

3529 GRAY - Marjorie Louise Wiseman Shipley, 91, of Gray, passed away Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at
Johnson City Medical Center.
Marjorie was a longtime resident of Gray, but had previously lived in Johnson City and Milligan
as a young adult. She was the daughter of the late Jim Wiseman and Lizzy Lawhorn.
Marjorie was a member of Gravel Hill Baptist Church for over 60 years. She
retired from K-Mart in Johnson City.
In addition to her parents, Marjorie was preceded in death by her loving husband Bill Shipley.
They were married for 69 years. She was also preceded by her sister Margrette Wiseman Martin,
and brother, Norman Wiseman, her sister-in-law, Marie Thomas, and brother-in-law, Kenneth
Shipley.
Survivors include her son, Jimmy Shipley (Amy), and grandchildren Joey Shipley, Brittany
Morelock (Dallas), Taylor Ohman (Joey). Great grandchildren, Carter Martin, Dawson
Morelock, Kennedy Morelock, and Joseph Ohman. Her brother and sister-in-laws, Lawrence
Shipley (Sybil), Niles Shipley (Helen), Helen Sprinkle, and several nieces and nephews.

A native of Washington County, she was a daughter of the late William C. "Charlie" and Mary Oliver Hyder. Mrs. Hyder retired from the F.B.I in Washington, D.C following 35 years of service. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H.T. "Tom" Meeks, daughter, Jayne Annette; sister, Gladine Harrison; two infant brothers; and an infant niece.

Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Janette and Jim Ford; nephew Landon Harrison; and two special cousins, Norma Smith and Charlie Oliver.

3531 GRAY - Martha Lou Cash Lewis, 84, of Gray, passed away on Friday, May 20, 2022 at NHC Healthcare.

She was a lifelong resident of Washington County, born on August 21, 1937, to the late William Clyde Cash and Sarah Milhorn Cash.

Martha was a strong Christian, attending Boones Creek Christian Church and raising her family there.

She was a woman of many talents, usually able to master whatever she decided to pick up next. This led her to many accomplishments in fishing, quilting, marksmanship, gardening, and occasionally architecture or horseshoes.

She is preceded in death by: first husband, Bob Trent; and siblings, Betty Cretsinger and Earl Cash.

Those surviving include: husband of 19 years, Carl Lewis; son, Scott Trent; step-children, Steve Lewis, Mike Lewis, and Jane Culp; grandchildren, Daniel Trent and Rebecca Clemmons; great-grandchildren, Maggie Trent and Abigail Christian; as well as many more step grandchildren, step great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

3532 GRAY - Mr. Robert Tate "Bobby" Hodges, age 59, Gray, passed away early Thursday, March 28, 2019 at his residence.

Mr. Hodges was born in Banner Elk, NC to the late Haskell Tate Hodges & Mary Ruth Stout Hodges. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Willard & Texie Hodges and Wiley & Hazel Stout, and a great nephew, Tate Jeremiah Hodges.

Robert was a 1979 graduate of David Crockett High School and was an employee of Old Dominion Freight Lines for many years prior to his death.

3533 GRAY - Mr. Vergil Paul Stout, age 81, of Gray, TN died naturally at home on December 09, 2022.

Vergil was preceded in death by his parents, Anderson and Veulah Stout of Elizabethton.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann of Gray (56) years and two sons, their brides and children. Darrin (Ginger) of Cookeville and parents to Caleb and Ian. Kevin (Dana) of Memphis and parents to Coley, Parker, Micah and Knox. He is also survived by a sister, Jean of Elizabethton and a sister, Norma (Gary Buckles) of Atlanta; several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Friends, Ted and Carol Douglas, godparents of Darrin and Kevin, have graciously loved and counseled them through the years.

Vergil graduated from Unaka High School. He later served in U.S. Army in the mid 60’s; was a long-time maintenance employee of Holston Defense and then BAE. He announced in the early 2000s that he would like “to do some woodworking.” He opened a little shop and would pull up a picture then create beautiful work that has blessed our sons and our friends and church.

As a Little League Baseball Coach, he made lifelong friends. The hugs and shared stories through the years have been a blessing.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 6:00 PM, Monday, December 12, 2022 at Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church with Dr. John Herdman officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at Mountain Home National Cemetery.

Mrs. Yontz was a lifelong resident of East Tennessee. Most people knew her as Nana Gray. She was the daughter of the late Darrell and Geraldine Peters Peeks.

In addition to her parents, two brothers, Lanny and Lucky Peeks, preceded Mrs. Yontz in death.

She was a lifelong resident of Gray, TN. She was the daughter of the late Marshall and Maude Medlin.

Portia graduated from Boones Creek High School in 1968 and was a member of Boones Creek Methodist Church.

She retired from Citi Group. She was a loving mother and grandmom. She enjoyed cooking, spending time outside, and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, Portia was preceded in death by her daughter, Andrea Nicole (Nikki) Burgess; one sister, Lavada Medlin; three brothers, Joe Medlin, James Medlin, and Verlin Medlin; and two brothers-in-law, Rufus Tipton and Trever Burgess.

3536 GRAY - Ms. Phoebie “Sue” Tipton, 84, of Gray passed away on Monday March 22, 2021, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Sue was the daughter of the late Lloyd Crowe and Lela Crouch.

Sue was a homemaker while her girls were younger and later worked at Proffitt’s in the Johnson City Mall until she retired.

She was a devoted Christian woman and enjoyed reading the Bible and daily devotionals. She was of the Baptist faith and attended Sinking Creek Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Lloyd Crowe, Jr.

Survivors include her daughters, Sondra McCurry and her husband Steve, Unicoi, and Sherri Tipton, Elizabethton; granddaughters, Lauren McCloud and her husband Brandon, Johnson City, and Kalah Tipton, Elizabethton; brother, Roy Crowe and his wife Dawn, Johnson City; her special buddy Cosmo that followed her every step.

3537 GRAY - Paul H. Pritchard 75, of Gray passed away Wednesday November 8th . Born on December 12, 1941 Paul graduated from Unaka High School.

He proudly served his country in Desert Storm with the 776th Maintenance Company of Elizabethton TN. and retired after 27 years of service in the Tennessee Army National Guard.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Omer and Alice Pritchard; brothers Danny and Landon; sister Linda.

Paul is survived by his wife of 40 years Jean Pritchard and his loving extended family, his children, Vicki, Wayne, Melissa and Tammy, sisters Charlotte and Faye.

Paul will be deeply missed by all who knew him including his church family.

3538 GRAY - Polly Marie Osburn Love, 87, of Gray, Tennessee, passed away on March 30, 2022, at LifeCare Center of Gray following an extended battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Marie was born in Unicoi, Tennessee to Walter Hardison Osburn and Ruth Ester Osburn. She was a graduate of Unicoi County High School where she earned salutatorian honors, participated as a cheerleader, and was crowned Unicoi County Fair Queen. Her early upbringing in a Christian home laid the foundation for a selfless life of giving and showing love to others.
From an early age, she had a love for music, sewing, and needlework hobbies. She played the piano for church services and for her father’s quartet, both at their home church services and in the surrounding area churches. She had a special gift in her hands. Marie excelled in a variety of sewing and needlework hobbies; some learned from her mother, while others were self-taught. Many hours of love were sewn into her children’s clothes, costumes for plays, and countless dresses for little Haitian girls. She crocheted many bookmarks, home décor items, and wearables throughout her life for her friends and family. As people came into her life, it was not uncommon for a letter to arrive in their mailbox, a card containing a handmade bookmark for their Bible. Marie’s life was spent performing limitless acts of service and caring. She was an avid quilter, making and giving multiple quilts to her family. She loved her needlework. Her hands were never idle.
As a wife to her dedicated husband, Marie embodied the Proverbs 31 woman. As a young mother of school-age children, she poured love into her children, while making time to volunteer for the Girl Scouts, various school events and many church activities. Marie cherished her role as grandmother, teaching, supporting and encouraging without end. She was a wonderful cook, hosting countless family holiday dinners, and entertaining ministers and church groups.
In addition to her service to God and her tireless giving to family and friends, Marie also worked outside the home for JC Penney and Millers department stores and was retired from Sears Payment Systems.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband of 63 years, James Harley Love and their daughter, Beth Ann Love. She is survived by daughters Janet Richard and husband Russ of Knoxville, Melissa (Missy) Martin and husband Roger of Gray, and son James (Jimmy) Love and wife Martha of Gray; seven grandchildren: Christopher Richard, Meagan Hopson and husband Chris, Kelly Richard, Caroline Good and husband Jake Nichols, Andrew Martin and wife Abby, Annie Love, and Hayden Good; three great-grandchildren: Kenna Kyte, Emily Hopson and Hunter Hopson; sisters Betty Garland, Frances Ray and husband David, Carolyn Harris; sisters-in-law Peggy Love and Patsy Love, along with several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff of LifeCare Center of Gray for their outstanding and loving care of Marie during her stay there.
A celebration of life service will be held at Boones Creek Christian Church on Saturday, April 2, beginning at 5pm, with Minister David Clark officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following this service in the church fellowship hall. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, April 3, at 2pm, at Roselawn Cemetery. 3539 GRAY - Roy W. "Jim" Hicks, 85, of Gray, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at his residence. He was a native of Sullivan County and son of the late Roy Bell Hicks and Ethel May Lyle.

Mr. Hicks was of the Baptist faith and a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. He enjoyed gardening, farming, raising tobacco and storytelling. He was a talented hardworking man who loved being a truck driver and worked for Empire for 50 years without missing a days' worth of work. He was able to do that because of the love and support of his wife.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Christine Hamby Hicks of 57 years, daughter in law, Carole Hicks, son in law, Danny Cox, and a great grandchild, Devon Haws.

Survivors include his children: Pamela Feathers of Johnson City, James Hicks of Florida, Roy A. Hicks of Gray, Cynthia Torbett and husband Larry Miller of Gray, Peggy Laws and husband Billy of Johnson City and Nancy Cox of Gray; sister, Cleo Sanford of Johnson City; brother James Blevins; aunt Ada Umbarger; eleven grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special friends: Edward Bowman and wife, Henry Harris, and Larry Crouch.

The family will greet friends to share memories on Monday, February 13, 2017 from 5:00 pm until a Celebration of Jim's Life at 7:00 pm in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services Johnson City with Reverend Ed Davis officiating. A Graveside and Committal Service will held on Tuesday at 2:00 pm at Monte Vista Memorial Park in Johnson City, TN. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. 3540 GRAY - Ruby Lee Markland, 85 of Gray passed away Monday, January 20, 2020 in the Life Care Center of Gray.

She was a native of Newport, Tennessee and was a daughter of the late William and Bessie Lee Neeley McKinney. Mrs. Markland attended the Cherokee Independent Freewill Baptist Church in Johnson City. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. James Allen Markland in 2007; and four brothers.

Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Berry and husband, Bobby of Greeneville; grandchildren, Traci Ayers, Angela Jordan and Crystal Berry and special grandson, Randy Thomas whom he made his home with her for many years; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City Thursday, January 23, 2020 from 1:00 until 2:00 PM then proceed to Washington County Memory Gardens for graveside service. Nephews and grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

3541 GRAY - Samuel Clinton Robinette, 85, a longtime resident of Gray, TN, passed away at his home that he shared with his son in the mountains near Connelly Springs, NC. He passed peacefully in his sleep in the early morning hours on October 21, 2021 after a brief battle with an aggressive form of cancer.
He was a longtime employee of Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport, TN and a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church in Kingsport. He was an Air Force veteran and an avid hiker who walked 1,865 miles on the Appalachian Trail with his friends and family. He was always kind to friends and family and never met a stranger. He lived his life showing his love for God, family and country.
He was preceded in death by Shirley, his wife of 59 years and his son, Travis.
He is survived by his son, Palmer Robinette and spouse Trish of Summerville, SC; son, Timothy Robinette of Connelly Springs, NC; daughter, Cheryl Douthat and spouse Dale of Whitesburg, TN. Also surviving are his sisters, Zelda Moody of Kingsport and Devonda Eiklor and spouse John of Rogersville, TN.; also surviving is a sister-in-law, Wanda Ward Goodwin and spouse Cliff. He is survived by grandchildren, Clint Robinette and spouse Lisa, their children, Claire and Joey; Amber Robinson and spouse Billy and son Trevor of Kingsport, and Seth Douthat of Tazewell, TN. He also had several grandchildren by marriage: Laurence Siple, Cherre Ferguson, Katie Hamilton, Sean Dougherty, Margaret Douthat Hofacker, Samantha Douthat Lipsey, Katie Douthat Williams and their spouses and children.
A visitation will be held at Pleasant View Baptist Church 2101 Stadium Drive Kingsport, TN. on Sunday, November 7, 2021 from 4:00-6:00 pm with a memorial service to follow at 6:00 pm.

3542 GRAY - Wanda Treva Willis, 75, of Gray died Friday, May 7, 2021 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a native of Johnson City, daughter of the late James Ely and Margaret Davison Hammonds.

Wanda was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church.

Wanda was a good friend and neighbor to all those who knew her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clay Willis.

Those left to cherish her memory, three brothers and a sister-in-law, Clay Hammonds, Roy Hammonds and Bill and Anna Sue Hammonds; one niece, Becky and one nephew, Chad; two special friends, Sue Johnson and Teresa Butler.

A graveside service is scheduled for Monday, May 10, 2021 at 1:00 pm at the Fordtown Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Pastor Jim Perkins. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

3543 GRAY - William Carl Ford 81, of Gray, went to be with the Lord Saturday March 23, 2019.

A native and resident of Gray, Mr. Ford retired from Whites Food. A member of Gray United Methodist Church and a mason of Sinking Creek Lodge #575, Mr. Ford sang with the Elderly Boys and enjoyed playing his guitar, golfing and farming.

Preceded in death by his wife Sandra Light Ford; parents, Hyman and Erma Ford; sisters, Dorothy Fox, Claudine France and Brenda Briggs.

Surviving include his daughters; Beth Hoilman of Clarksville, Karla Wood and husband David of Eastern Star community, Leslie Calloway of Johnson City, Joey Morris of Springfield, Illinois, Sarina Faircloth and husband Brock of Spanish Fort Alabama; son, Chris Ford of Johnson City; step-sons, Rodney Good and wife Jamie of Nashville, Dana Good and wife Jody of Hendersonville; 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Gray United Methodist Church. Funeral service will be at 7:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary with Rev. Mike Hubble and Dr. Dennis Flaugher officiating.

3544 GRAY — Bynum S. Presnell, age 82, of Gray, went to be with the Lord on March 2, 2016.

He was born August 22, 1933, to the late Steve and Imogene Presnell. He was Saved at 18 years of age.

He enjoyed working hard and retired from Tom Still Transfer Co. after several years of service. He also had a lifelong passion for the game of baseball. He was a member of Deerlick Union Church. He loved spending time with his church family.

Survivors include daughter, Becky Pond; son, Jerry and wife, Angie Presnell; several grandchildren.

3545 GRAY — Martha "Ann" Butner, 77, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 5, 2016. She departed this life from the Life Care Center of Gray.
Mrs. Butner was born July 16, 1939 in the Siam community of Carter County, Tenn., a daughter of the late Earnest and Gladys Bowers Meredith. She had lived in the Gray area for around 40 years.
Martha Ann Butner was a member of Crossroads Christian Church and the Bereans Sunday School Class in Gray. She was also a member of the Johnson City Community Center and a former member of Elizabethton First Christian Church.
Martha graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1957. She married Richard Butner on June 13, 1970 and was a homemaker who lovingly cared for her family.
In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by sister, Shirley Jane Meredith, and brother, J. Meredith.
Those left to cherish her memory are husband, Richard Butner; daughter, Rachel Renee Butner Golden and husband, Mike; niece, Sara Bowers; and nephews, David Meridith and Robin Meridith.
The family received friends on Monday, August 8, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Crossroads Christian Church in Gray. A Celebration of Life immediately followed with Pastor Clint Andrews officiating.

3546 GRAY — Pandora "Penny" McGhee Constantine, 63, 2137 Suncrest Village Lane, Gray, passed away at her residence Friday, September 13, 2019.
A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late Charles "Eddie" Collins and Helen "Bearyl" Collins. Ms. Constantine was a retired registered nurse serving 20 years for the Veteran's Administration, Mountain Home. She attended Elizabethton High School and was a graduate of East Tennessee State University. Ms. Constantine enjoyed reading, shopping, gardening and adoring her granddaughters.
Survivors include a daughter, Candi Constantine-Castillo and her husband, Carlos Castillo, of Harlington, Texas, and grandchildren, Madison Natalia Constantine-Castillo and Irene Antonia "Nia" Constantine-Castillo.
A memorial prayer service will be conducted at Saint Elizabeth's Catholic Church on Saturday, September 21, with Father Dennis Kress performing the service. Honorary pallbearers will be Carlos Castillo, Jan Constantine Malezis, Ron Malezis, Kerry Bernshausen and Chad Crigger.

3547 Grayson Elmer Richardson, 81, of Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. He was a life-long resident of Elizabethton and a son of the late Anderson and Mary Katie Cox Richardson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 special years, Betty Jean Isaacs Richardson, who passed away in 2005; two brothers; and three sisters. Mr. Richardson was a member of First Baptist Church and a former member of Oak Street Baptist Church. He attended Carter County Schools, Elizabethton City Schools and played football in the U.S. Army after high school. He was retired from the Johnson City Press as a supervisor for the Pressroom. His hobby after retiring was working in his wood working shop. He also enjoyed playing with and doing for his grandchildren who meant so much to him. Grayson made an immense impact on those who knew him throughout the years. He was a model of love for his children, family and friends and the spirit of his love will live on in each of our hearts. Mr. Richardson is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Julia Markland and husband Brian and Janna Akers all of Elizabethton; three grandchildren who were his pride and joy, Cara Shea Gouge, Ryan Akers and Marcus Markland; a very special great grand-daughter, Kyra Jean Gouge, whom he called his “little red headed baby”; a very special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, E. Glenn Isaacs and wife Audrey; niece Keely Batchelder and son Matthew of Elizabethton; two sisters, Betty Ann Woods and Cathleen Wilson; very special friends, Clyde and Nell Jenkins, Dr. Clayton Vandiver, Wayne and Judy Andes, fellow co-workers at the Johnson City Press, friends and family from First Baptist Church, Victor and Judy Deloach and the staff at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. 3548 Grayson Ford Winters, age 69, Elizabethton, TN went home to be with his Lord after a long battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family at his home at the time of his death.

Grayson was of the Christian faith. He was a quiet man with a quick wit. Grayson was from a time when a man was his word; he strongly believed in honesty and integrity. Grayson had strong family values and struggled with grief over the last year due to the loss of his wife, Rhonda, who lost her cancer battle one year ago. He loved his grandchildren and was very proud of their accomplishments. His great-grandson, Brody, was a special light in his life. Grayson had a constant loving companion in his dog, Sam.

Grayson was the son of the late Paul and Mildred Winters formerly of Hampton. He graduated from Hampton High School and the Donaldson Police Academy in 1978. He was retired from the Elizabethton Police Department and the First Judicial Drug Task Force; where he served as director for twelve years. There were many drug operations under his leadership. Grayson loved his work in law enforcement and took great pride in getting drugs off the streets. After his time with the Drug Task Force, Grayson returned to the Elizabethton Police Department and was promoted to Sergeant.

Prior to medical retirement, he finished out his career as a detective in criminal investigations. Grayson mentored many young officers and made lifelong friends throughout his career in law enforcement.

In addition to his parents, Grayson was preceded in death by his wife of forty-nine years, Rhonda Winters; a sister, Jeanette Allen; a brother, Richard Winters and several nieces and nephews.

Survivors include his children, Deanna McInturff and husband Tim, Elizabethton; Gregory Winters and wife Nikki, Elizabethton and Pam Ward, Jonesborough; grandchildren, Blake Ward, Drew Ward, Daniel McInturff, Katharyne Bailey, Kayla Winters, Kassie Winters and Cloe' Winters and a great-grandson, Brody McInturff; a sister, Brenda Taylor and husband Gene; a brother, Charles Winters and wife Linda; a brother-in-law, Marvin Allen and a sister-in-law, Gloria Winters. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Grayson Ford Winters will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Friday, July 10, 2015, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway - Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Rev. Rusty Verran and Rev. Doug Hartley officiating. Honor guard will be provided by the Elizabethton Police Department.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday prior to the service or at the residence at any time.

Committal and entombment service will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 11, 2015 in the Mausoleum of Peace of Happy Valley Memorial Park. 3549 GREEN MOUNTAIN, NC - Juanita (Peterson) Gouge, age 87, of Green Mountain, NC, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, at The Waters of Johnson City.

A native of Green Mountain, NC, Juanita is a daughter of the late Floyde B. and Ethel (Johnson) Peterson. She was an active member of Peterson Chapel Church of the Brethren in Green Mountain, NC, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Song Leader and Fundraiser for the church. She enjoyed gardening, farming and crafting. In addition to her parents, Juanita is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years: Kenneth Gouge; sister and brother-in-law: Wanda and Ted Tipton; and infant daughter: Anita Diana Gouge, who passed away shortly after birth.

3550 GREENBACK - Billy Joe Bowman of Greenback, TN formerly of Johnson City, TN passed away Sunday 22 August at the age of 91. A 1948 graduate of Science Hill High School, Billy Joe pitched the Hilltoppers to the 1947 State Championship and was inducted into the Science Hill Hall of Fame in 2007. His on the field successes led to a full scholarship at the University of Tennessee where Bowman collected wins over Princeton and USC in the semi-finals of the 1951 College World series in route to a runner up finish. After graduation in 1952, Bowman signed with the St. Louis Cardinals organization returning to Johnson City to begin his professional career. Billy Joe's baseball career was interrupted by a two-year stint in Korea serving his country as a transportation officer in the United States Army. With his military obligation complete, Bowman returned to baseball where he collected a 56-36 record in minor league baseball reaching AAA with the Rochester Red Wings and Houston Buffs. With his playing days over, Billy Joe joined the Houston Astros in various capacities including pitching coach and assistant manager working in the Astros organization 28 years. In his time with the Astros, Bowman had the pleasure of working with Hall of Fame players such as Nolan Ryan, Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, and Yogi Berra. His time in Houston was capped by being named the 1995 Houston Astros Distinguished Houstonian. Bowman returned to his roots in East Tennessee in 1996 and continued the trucking company he successfully grew for 40 years. He remained lifelong fan of the Tennessee Volunteers and Houston Astros. In his final years he loved nothing more than attending Science Hill and Johnson City Cardinal games and being around the game he loved so much. He was preceded in death by his infant son Charles Frances Bowman, parents John Frank and Dorothy Randolph Bowman, sister Helen Arwood, and brothers Ferrell and Charlie all of Johnson City, TN. He is survived by his sons Joel Wayne Bowman (Terri) of Houston, TX and Lt Cmdr. John Paul Bowman (Jessica) of Lemoore, CA. Also, he is survived by his grandchildren Jessica, Josh, Jay and Diana along with brother Kenneth, six great-grandchildren and sisters-in-law, Mag and Becky Bowman. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Lou and Maxine Potenza for their vigilant care as Billy Joe's Johnson City neighbors and Toni and Miranda with Amedysis Hospice for the care they provided in his final year.
