2951 ERWIN - Ira "Pete" Rutter, age 78, Rutter Lane, Erwin, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit after a lengthy illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and son of the late Willard Brown Rutter and Mary Jane Williams Rutter.

Mr. Rutter was a United States Navy Veteran. He taught at Rock Creek Elementary for twenty-one years before his retirement. Mr. Rutter was Teacher of the Year for grades 5-8 in 1996-1997. Also, he was awarded Conservation Teacher of the Year in 1996-1997.

Pete served on the Care and Share Board for three years and was a member of the Erwin Centennial Masonic Lodge #491 F&AM for fifty-three years.

In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his loving wife of fifty-two years, Patricia Rutter on June 9, 2012; son, Ira Craig Rutter, on August 7, 2008; infant son, Jeffery Dale Rutter; one brother, Willard "Sonny" Rutter.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, one daughter, April Danielle Britt, Johnson City; two grandsons: Liam and Jeffery Rutter; three great grandchildren: Jaxon Treadway, Henry Britt and Josephine Britt; two half-sisters: Mary Thorpe and husband, Jim, Lisa Isaacs, all of Alliance, OH; several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family would like to extend a special, heartfelt thank you to Pete's special friend, Harley Bailey.

Graveside service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, June 18, 2018 in the Evergreen Cemetery. Reverend E. L. Wheeler will officiate.

2952 ERWIN - Jackson Daniel "Danny" Heaton, Jr., 57, Erwin, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2018 in the Johnson City Medical Center.

Born July 26, 1961 in Elizabethton, he had lived a number of years in Erwin. Danny was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. He served in the United States Air Force. He was formerly employed at Snap on Tool, Elizabethton. He was of the Baptist Faith. He was preceded in death by his father Jack Heaton.

Survivors include his Daughter: Lauren (Joe) Arnett, Elizabethton. His Mother: Judy Rowland Heaton. Two Brothers: Scott (Dianne) Heaton and Doug (Nikki) Heaton all of Elizabethton. His fiancée Connie Tipton. Several nieces & nephews. His dog: Precious.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2018 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with Mr. Lowell Shell officiating. Burial will follow the service.

2953 ERWIN - Jean Tittle Bergendahl, age 88, Erwin, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus on Sunday, June 5, 2022. She was born in Spruce Pine, North Carolina on August 8, 1933. Jean was the only daughter of the late James William Tittle and Edith Britt Tittle.

She was a woman of strong faith and a very active member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where she started the Get Acquainted Club. Jean was also a member and former President of the United Methodist Women’s Club. She also served on various other church committees over the years. Jean was a board member of the Care and Share program. She began fundraising throughout the county to help get the Unicoi County Public Library started.

Jean was passionate about taking care of her family and grandchildren throughout the years. She worked as a bookkeeper with her husband at their business, Happy Hour Clock Shop in Johnson City. Jean was a loving and devoted wife, mom, mammaw, great grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, O.E. “Eddie” Bergendahl, III; her two brothers: J.W. “Billy” Tittle and Jimmy Tittle.

Jean leaves behind to treasure many wonderful memories, her loving and devoted husband of seventy years, O.E. “Mick” Bergendahl, II; her four children: James “Jimmie” Bergendahl (Winnie), Michael “Mike” Bergendahl (Donna), all of Johnson City, Scott Bergendahl (LuAnne), Erwin and Sue Benny (Will), Pasadena, MD; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grandchild; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Jean’s family will receive friends on Thursday, June 9, 2022, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church.

2954 ERWIN - Jeff Moody White, age 87, of Erwin, passed away on Friday, November 17, 2017 at his residence.

He was a native of Erwin and a son of the late Blaine and Myrtle (Edney) White. Jeff was a proud veteran who served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a Sergeant First Class, where he was a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a former pipefitter and welder for TVA and retired from the Maintenance department of James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. Mr. White attended Grace United Methodist Church, was a member of the VFW, Moose Lodge, American Legion, and was a part of the 5th Regimen Korean War Reunion. He enjoyed sports, TN football, watching the military channel, and was a very patriotic American. In addition to his parents, Jeff is preceded in death by a son, Glenn Franklin White and numerous brothers and sisters.

2955 ERWIN - Jimmy L. Edney, age 72, of Erwin, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, February 12, 2017 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Erwin and a son of the late William Lish and Mildred Hensley Edney. Jimmy proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church and was the Materials Control Manager at Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin until he retired after 30+ years of service. Jimmy loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he was loved by many friends, neighbors and family. In addition to his parents, He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Pat Edney and his brother, David “Toby” Edney.

2956 ERWIN - Jo Sherwood passed away peacefully December 6, 2021, at the age of 98. A lifelong resident of Erwin, Tennessee, Jo had a long career of musical offerings in several local church communities. This included many years as organist at First Baptist Church in Erwin where her father once pastored. She was instrumental in the specification and installation of the 1970 Op. 993 Schantz III/33 pipe organ at First Baptist, after which she and Haynes Brown performed an organ and piano concert. A reception for her retirement as church organist was held in 1989.
Jo received her Bachelor of Arts degree from East Tennessee State College. She played cello in the Johnson City Symphony during the 1960s. For decades she had been an active member of the American Guild of Organists, and was a student of Ruth Stout (First Methodist, Johnson City).
After college, Jo's work life included jobs at the U.S. Post Office in Erwin, a career in the offices of the Clinchfield Railroad, and manager of her brother Paul Sherwood's Erwin Law Office. After performing a successful solo flight in her youth, she received her private pilot's license.
In addition to her substantial musical talents, Jo had a great love for animals of all kinds, and her home was graced by many dogs and cats throughout the years. She loved the Lord with all her heart. She also loved plants and flowers, the colors pink and light blue (NOT RED!), plays on words, tea, Danish butter cookies, and anything peanut butter. Jo was a great fan of crossword and other puzzles. Even toward the end of her life when her sight was so impaired, she solved puzzle clues when someone read them to her.
Jo was preceded in death by her parents Arthur C. Sherwood and Edith (Allen) Sherwood; by her siblings James C. Sherwood, Sr., Martha (Sherwood) Marshall, Clarence (A.C.) Sherwood, Ruth (Sherwood) Norton, Edith (Sherwood) Veatch, Paul J. Sherwood, and Samuel Sherwood; and by nephews James C. Sherwood, Jr. and Robert Veatch.
Survivors include nieces and nephews: Patricia Sherwood McKinster (Martinsville VA), Sarah Sherwood Litchfield (Palmyra VA), Art Sherwood (Blowing Rock NC), Will Sherwood (Sterling MA), Jane Norton (South Haven MI), John Veatch (Barnesville GA), Robert Sherwood (Riceville TN), Thomas Sherwood (Erwin, TN), Paul L. Sherwood (Mechanicsville VA); twelve grand nieces and nephews; and their respective families.
The family greatly appreciates the loving care provided by her helpers and caregivers, including Diane Bennett, Michele Sparks, Penny Harris, Wanda Fellers, Dawn Edwards, Gina Loveless, and Joe Sparks, as well as support from neighbors and friends.

2957 ERWIN - Joan Silvers McCurry, age 83, of Erwin, passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2019 at Christian Care Center of Unicoi County.

She is a daughter of the late Harley and Kate Guinn Silvers. Joan was a native of Unicoi County, before moving to Miami, FL in 1954. She returned to Erwin in 1981.

Joan was a member of Central Baptist Church, in Erwin. She was a homemaker. She loved spending time with her family and friends, going shopping and out to eat. She also enjoyed making candy and cookies to give to friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband William B. McCurry, Jr. (Bill), Sister, Anita Silvers Sonerholm, Brothers, Joel and Wendell Blake Silvers.

2958 ERWIN - Johnny Mack Corn, age 78, Erwin, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and son of the late Thomas “Mutt” and Rosa Lee Harris Corn.

Johnny retired from Hoover Ball in 2003 where he was employed for over thirty years as a supervisor. He attended Jennie Moore Presbyterian Church. Johnny loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed coaching and teaching baseball for many years. Johnny was an Atlanta Braves and University of Tennessee sports fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Jennifer Corn.

Survivors include his sons: Michael Corn, Columbia, TN and John Corn, Jr., Erwin; two sisters: Janice Metcalf (John), Erwin and Brenda Sue Sparks (Ed), Flag Pond; nieces and nephews: Vicki Perry, Stuart Sparks, Benjamin Sparks, Katie Sparks, T.J. Metcalf, Adam Pritchard, Aaron Pritchard, Andrew Shipp, Dan Shipp, Elodie Metcalf and Holston Metcalf; his dog, Ellie May.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 PM on Friday, July 23, 2021 at the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. Johnny’s funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday at Jennie Moore Presbyterian Church. Reverend Craig Shelton and Reverend George Rolling will officiate. 2959 ERWIN - Judith Ann Pate Bradford, age 71, 140 Berkshire Drive, Erwin, passed away Saturday, July 16, 2016 in the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital ER following a lengthy illness. She was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and daughter of the late Clarence Wade Pate and Hazel Lee Sams Pate. Mrs. Bradford retired from Valley Federal in 1992 after twenty-seven years of service. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and had served as a Sunday School Teacher for twenty years.

Mrs. Bradford leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband of fifty-three years, Richard Lee Bradford; a daughter, Melanie Jill Culbreth and husband, Brian of Campobello, SC; two grandsons, Luke Garrison Culbreth and Jacob Wade Culbreth, both of Campobello, SC; several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, July 19, 2016 from 1:00 P. M. until the hour of service at the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend David Crutchfield will officiate at the 3:00 P. M. funeral service. Music will be provided by Gary Amos, Jonathan and David Crutchfield and Inez Chandler, pianist. 2960 ERWIN - June Lee Johnson Dills, age 94, Erwin, passed away on Thursday, July 8, 2021, at the Center on Aging. She was a native of Mitchell County, North Carolina and a daughter of the late Fred Jay Johnson and Lucy Sparks Johnson. June lived most of her life in Erwin.

She was a member of Fellowship Freewill Baptist Church. June worked at Southern Pottery for several years until the pottery’s closing. She also worked at Brown’s Hardware and was an Operator at Hoover Ball Bearing for many years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James S. Dills in 1984; three brothers: Stewart Johnson, Brown M. Johnson and Charles “Ed” Johnson.

Survivors include one brother, Doug Johnson (Laraine), Erwin; two sisters: Barbara Tapp, Erwin and Shirley Stephenson, Nashville; several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 12:00-1:30 PM on Sunday, July 11, 2021, at the Robert Ledford Funeral Home. Graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday in the Roselawn Memory Gardens. Pastor Terry Richardson will officiate. Music will be provided by Allan Foster. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

2961 ERWIN - Kyle Dean Hensley, age 80, Erwin, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 6, 2019 at his residence, while he was surrounded by his loving family.

He was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a son of the late Joseph "Joe" Roscoe and Lucy Tolley Hensley.

Kyle was a member of Mountain Dale Freewill Baptist Church. He retired from NFS with over thirty-five years of service.

Kyle was an avid fisherman and he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Ricky Hensley and two sisters: Irene Tipton and Zelta Bagby.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife of fifty-nine years, Carolyn Wilson Hensley; two daughters: Sandy Hensley (Allen), Erwin and Amy McLaughlin (Pastor Todd), Unicoi; four grandchildren: Joshua Hensley, Lori Hensley, Ashley McLaughlin, Alyssa McLaughlin; one great grandson, Bentley Collins; two brothers: Reverend Arnold Hensley (Marsha), Erwin, and George Hensley (Sharrol) Green Mountain, NC; two sisters: Glasie Peterson (R.L.) and Kathleen Cooper (Wayne), all of Erwin; brother-in-law, Stanley Tipton, Erwin; several nieces and nephews also survive.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until the hour of service on Tuesday, December 10, 2019 in the Robert Ledford Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Todd McLaughlin will officiate at the 2:00 PM funeral service. Committal service will follow in the Evergreen Mausoleum. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

2962 ERWIN - Linda Gail Parker, 65 of Erwin, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Elizabethton, TN, she is the daughter of the late Howard and Nell Merritt. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Patrick Parker.

Linda attended Fishery Community Church. She retired from Siemens after nearly twenty-five years of service. Linda loved being a mammaw to her grandchildren, watching granddaughter, Chloe's softball games, going to Disney, RV traveling, and eating lunch with her lunch bunch.

Those left to cherish Linda's memory include: son, Ricky L. Conner (Heather) of Johnson City; grandchildren, Chloe Nell and Clinton Howard Conner; siblings, Larry Merritt (Nancy) of Elizabethton, and Vivian Newman (Jim) of Madisonville, TN; nieces and nephews, Diane Dugger (Charles), Mike Merritt (Mitzi), Kenneth Merritt (Kelly), and Sarah Newman; and great-nieces and great-nephews, Adam and Ellie Dugger, Katie, Clayton, and Karie Merritt, Grayson Merritt, and Claire DeMoss.

2963 ERWIN - Lois White Powers, age 87, Erwin, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at the Center On Aging & Health where she had resided since September 2019.

Ms. Powers was a lifelong resident of Erwin and was the youngest daughter of the late Clyde and Dorothy Bailey White. She retired from CSX Railroad with over forty years of employment.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Powers is preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-four years, Gerald Powers on October 24, 2018; one brother, Leonard White; two sisters: Lola White Akers and Lelia White Parsons; one special nephew, Richard Parsons.

Lois White Powers has left behind to cherish her memory, sisters-in-law: Etta Norton, Mary Kay Broyles, Myra Harris and Rebecca Sayer; brother-in-law, David Powers; nieces: Barbara Green, Jeannine Cheshire; nephew, Leonard Parsons; special friend and loving caregiver, Carol Bowman.

The family would like to express their sincere thank you to the Center On Aging & Health for the love and care that was shown to Lois and to Amedisys Hospice during her last couple of weeks.

It was the wish of both Gerald and Lois to be cremated. Lois had been in possession of the urn containing Gerald's ashes, holding this until the time came when both urns could be buried together. A graveside memorial service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery at a later time. This service will be to honor and remember the lives of both Gerald and Lois. As both their ashes return to this earth together, their spirits are now together for all eternity.

2964 ERWIN - Lonnie Wayne Casey, age 67, of Erwin, passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2019, at Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Erwin, Lonnie is a son of the late Clarence and Francis Roselee (Hilton) Casey. Lonnie was a proud Veteran of the United States Army, a member of the Arlington National Cemetery Honor Guard and an electrician. He was an avid shooter and enjoyed college football. In addition to his parents, Lonnie is preceded in death by his sister, Neda Helton.

2965 ERWIN - Lorena Wilson, age 94, of Erwin, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at Christian Care Center of Unicoi County. A native of Erwin, Lorena is a daughter of the late Alexander and Rebecca Lou (Collins) Masters. She was a charter member of Chestoa Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and loved to help with activities. She loved cooking, especially making sweets, working in her flowers and having her family all together, particularly at Christmas time. Lorena loved quoting John 14:1-4. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Joseph W. Wilson; grandson: Tyler Wilson; daughter, Lana Carol Foster; son-in-law, Calvin Douglas Foster; and daughter-in-law, Theresa Wilson.

2966 ERWIN - Lucille (Justice) Davis, age 86, of Erwin, passed away after a brief illness, on Friday, December 22, 2017 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Mrs. Davis was born in Mars Hill, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Thomas Joshua "T.J." and Ethel (Rice) Justice. She is a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. Lucille was a loving wife and mother and a hard worker. She was very friendly and always wanted to do the right thing. She enjoyed spending her winters in Florida, keeping in touch with family and friends and being a part of her book club. In addition to her parents, Lucille is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Rod Davis; her brother, O. D. Davis; and her sister, Elazene Rice.

She is a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where she served as the Treasurer and a member of the Administrative Council. In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Charles D. "Buck" Broyles, and one brother, John Vaughn.

2968 ERWIN - Mr. Glen Elliott, age 82, Erwin, passed away Tuesday March 22, 2022, at his residence with his family by his side.
Glen was a native of Washington County and the son of the late James and Pearl Treadway Elliott. He was also preceded in death by his wife Barbara Keplinger Elliott, siblings, Earnest Elliott, Blain Elliott Raymond Elliott, Virginia Tipton, Frances Berry, Pauline Henley, and Nellie Robintte and son-in-law, Mitchell Bennett.
Glen was of the Christian faith. He was one of the most giving and loving men, helping others even if they didn’t ask.
He was a Machinist, having his own shop, and could fix anything. When no one else could fix it, he could.
He loved his family and loved spending time with them.
Survivors include his three daughters and sons-in-law, Penny and Mike Lowe, Lisa Bennett, Ouita and Chris Lands; grandchildren, Elliott Lowe, Hunter Lowe, Alex Lowe, Kauli Lowe, Josh Bennett (Elizabeth), Jordan Bennett (Casey), Savannah Lands and Ella Lands; great-grandchildren Brayleigh, Raylan, Liliana, Colton and Wyatt; one sister Shirley Elliott and several nieces and nephews.
A private graveside was held by the family.

2970 ERWIN - Nancy Josephine Ruble Metcalf, age 80, Erwin, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 25, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

She was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late Hubert and Gladys Taylor Ruble.

Nancy was a lifetime member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was a former employee of Superior Hone, where she worked on the assembly line for eighteen years.

Nancy was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She enjoyed spending time with all her children and grandchildren. Nancy liked going to Dollywood, camping at Watauga Lake, going to UT Football games and watching her beautiful hummingbirds.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Debbie Edwards on February 1, 2019 and one brother, Billie Jackson Ruble on February 11, 2010.

2971 ERWIN - Nell Reta Tolley Peterson, age 78, Erwin, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus on Monday, January 17, 2022. She was a lifelong resident of Erwin and a daughter of the late James Clarence and Golda Miller Tolley.
Nell was a homemaker. She was a member of First Bible Holiness Church. Nell loved spending time with her family, and she loved her little dog, Baby.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Lowell Peterson; two brothers: Gerald Tolley and James Clarence Tolley, Jr.; six sisters: Eulala Bennett, Emma Jean Wilson, Mary Tolley, Edna May Tolley, Ina Belle Price and Margaret Williams; Lori’s fiancé, Chris Maricle.

2972 ERWIN - Nina Dale Masters Crain, age 72, Erwin, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 31, 2021, while she was surrounded by her family. She was a lifelong resident of Erwin and daughter of the late Loyd and Myrtle Johnson Masters.
Nina was the Office Manager for her family business, Ends Electrical. She was of the Baptist Faith. Nina enjoyed cross stitch, puzzles, cooking and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Danny and Tim Masters.

2973 ERWIN - Richard “Dick” Lee Bradford, age 81, Erwin, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, May 20, 2022. He was born and raised in the Spivey Mountain Community and is a son of the late Lyde and Gladys Brinkley Bradford.

Richard retired as a Chemical Operator from NFS in 1996 after thirty-two years of service. He was a very active member of Calvary Baptist Church. Richard served as the Chairman of Deacons for many years. Also, he served the church in other areas over the years.

Richard loved storytelling, cooking, canning, tending his vegetable garden, raising English Bulldogs, performing magic tricks, growing his large tomatoes and reciting poetry. He was a nature lover of squirrels, hummingbirds and keeper of Purple Martins. Richard’s yard was a safe haven for their migration every Spring.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of fifty-three years, Judith Ann Pate Bradford on July 16, 2016; one brother, Jack Bradford; two sisters: Gale Williams (Lynn) and Jessie Gentry (Bill); brother-in-law, Gene Ramsey; one niece, Lucinda Knarr.

2974 ERWIN - Sharon Kay Ritchie Slagle, age 50, Erwin, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus on Wednesday, January 5, 2022. She was born on December 25, 1971, in Johnson City, Tennessee. Sharon is a daughter of Nancy Seward Ritchie and the late George Arliss Ritchie.
She was a proud member of the Unicoi County Lady Devil’s Basketball Team from 1986 until her graduation in 1990. Sharon earned her BS Degree in Elementary Education and her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Development from East Tennessee State University. She began her teaching career at Rock Creek Elementary School where she taught first grade for several years. Then, Sharon started teaching Pre-K at the Community Learning Center with Unicoi County School System. Later, Sharon became the Director of Pre-K Program with the Unicoi County School System. She attended Evergreen Freewill Baptist Church for several years.
Sharon coached the Unicoi County Middle School Lady Devil’s Basketball Team. She loved watching her son, the light of her life play football, basketball and baseball for the Unicoi County Blue Devils. Sharon attended all his ballgames as well as her nieces and nephews sporting events. She was a loving and devoted wife, mom, daughter, sister, aunt, teacher and friend. Sharon will be greatly missed by her family and everyone who knew her. The impact Sharon’s short life made on others will be remembered forever and live on for generations to come. Heaven gained an angel.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Frank and Florence Seward and her paternal grandparents, John K. and Hattie Love Ritchie; father-in-law, Donnie Slagle.

2975 ERWIN - Sidney Charles Edwards, 85, Erwin, died Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at his residence, following a lengthy illness.

Charles was a native of Bee Log, North Carolina, and had been a resident of Erwin for most of his life. He was a son of the late Carter and Belle McIntosh Edwards. Charles was an Electrician and former owner of Rapid Electric, Johnson City, for more than forty years. He was a longtime member of Canah Chapel Freewill Baptist Church, and a Mason. Charles was an avid fisherman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Jenny Ingle Edwards, in 1986, two brothers and three sisters. Charles is survived by his four children, Kim Garland and Kathy Masters, both of Erwin, Doug Edwards and wife Tammy, Unicoi, Joy Moffitt and husband Steve, Jonesborough; his longtime companion and wonderful caregiver, Carolyn Hodge, of the home; a sister, Velma Gaunt, Bristol; six grandchildren, Tialynn Griffith, Mary Ann Garland, Chase Edwards, Sydney Masters, Emily Edwards and Will Moffitt; five great-grandchildren, Scotty, Eli, Hannah, Jackson and Bryce; several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice Home Health, especially Becky and Lindsey, and Charles's neighbors and special friends, Bob and Wanda Hutchins.

2976 ERWIN - Tennie Mae Cole Davenport, age 78, Erwin, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2017 at the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care.

She was born in Asheville but had lived most of her life in Unicoi County. Tennie was a daughter of the late Anon and Algia Jane Yelton Cole. She was a homemaker and a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church. Tennie was devoted to her family and loved them very much. She was their hero and cheerleader. Her nieces and nephews adored her. Tennie loved her Lord and was longing for Heaven. She loved Micky and Bandit, her furry companions.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll Glen Davenport on December 18, 2013 and one brother, Kermit Cole.

2977 ERWIN - Terry Lynn Tipton, Jr., age 43, Erwin, passed away unexpectedly Friday, June 11, 2021. He had lived most of his life in Unicoi County. Terry is the son of Terry Lynn Tipton, Sr. and Debbie Tipton.

Terry was employed by Pepsi Cola Company as a geo driver for the past three years. He had previously worked at CSX Transportation for ten years. He attended Chestoa Baptist Church. Terry enjoyed fishing, drawing, and most of all taking pictures was his biggest hobby. He loved his kids and spending time with them.

Terry was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Irene Tipton Mashburn.

Mr. Chatman enjoyed golfing and getting hamburgers with his beloved dog Susie. He was of the Baptist faith. She lived most of her life in Unicoi County and was a daughter of the late Spencer and Ethel Chandler Hoyle.

Verl was a member of Clear Branch Baptist Church. She retired from Morrill Electric after several years of service.
Verl was a loving and dedicated mother, grandmother and sister. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, sewing, cooking and canning. Verl always kept herself busy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons: Mike and Bruce Stephenson; four brothers: Robert, Grady, Hual and Vanas Hoyle; four sisters: Vera Carter, Delia Hoyle, Edna Davis and Una Blankenship.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, one son, Tony Stephenson (Pat), Unicoi; one daughter, Regina Blakely (Melvin), Winston Salem, NC; two sisters: Phyllis Hoyle and Shirley Fender, both of Erwin; ten grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, several great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

2980 ERWIN - We are saddened to announce the passing of Coy Edwards, age 86, of Erwin TN. Coy gained his heavenly wings on Sunday, December 18, 2022 surrounded by his family.

Coy was born in Yancey Co, NC to Braskie Edwards and Lula (Tolley) Edwards.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, 2 sisters and 4 brothers.

Coy was a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. His greatest joy was taking his grandchildren camping and creating cherished memories with them. Coy loved working on classic cars and bicycles and restored many of them over the years. He also enjoyed going to classic car shows. He was employed by Summers-Taylor, Inc. for 40 years, from which he retired in 2001. He was a member of Mountain Dale Free Will Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 61 years, Joyce Edwards of Erwin, TN; three loving children including two daughters, Mitzi Edwards of Jonesborough TN , Kimberly Edwards Ritchings and her husband Kirk Ritchings of Charlotte N.C.; son, Jeff Edwards of Johnson City, TN ; four grandchildren, Laurel Edwards, Ben Edwards, Gabe Ritchings and Maggie Ritchings; brother, S.J. Edwards of Marion, NC and several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church where she was the Assistant Pianist, assisted with Vacation Bible School and taught Sunday School. She loved her flowers and gardening, singing and cooking. In addition to her parents, Zelda is preceded in death by her 1st husband, Kermit Buster Cole; one sister, Zetta Carter; and four brothers: Jerry Edwards, Vestil Edwards, David Edwards and Cecil Edwards.

2982 ERWIN – Zita Jane Keefauver Tolley has taken the right hand of her Lord and gone home with her Saviour. Jane was born June 8, 1943, with her identical twin sister, Rita June Ingram. She died, Sunday, September 6, 2009 at 12:30 PM after an extensive stay in the hospital. Jane was 66 years old.

She was the daughter of Lucille Keefauver, of Jonesborough, and the late Billy Joe Keefauver.

Jane was a member of Evergreen Free Will Baptist Church, where she had served as an assistant Sunday school teacher and was a former member of the choir. She had served as treasurer, secretary and president of the Erwin Business and Professional Women's Club. She was secretary of the Unicoi County United Way for 14 years. While in the United Way, she served as the executive chairman of the Unicoi County Relief Fund.

Jane was a certified Red Cross Advanced First Aid instructor and had taught several classes. She was a member of the John Sevier Chapter of the D.A.R., and was past president of the Erwin Get Acquainted Club. Jane served in the Mother's March of Dimes and was a past consumer consultant of the Tennessee Superior Home Health Advisory Board.

She had served on the Washington County Foster Child Care review board and was a past president of the Martin Chapel P.T.A. and a Cub Scout mother. Jane was a past member of the Erwin Band Boosters, and was the past president of the Erwin Circle Left Square Dance Club.

She owned her own business: "Jane's Bear Necessities Gift Shop," at the Sheraton/ Holiday Inn Hotel in Johnson City for 20 years. She was a charter member of the friends of the library in Erwin and was a charter member of the board of directors for 5 years and was president-elect.

Jane was very active in the TFWC/GFWC, where she had been a member for over 40 years.

On the local club level, she had served as Chairman of Arts, Chairman of Conservation, Chairman of International Affairs, Chairman of Public Affairs, Membership Chairman, Program Chairman, 3rd Vice President, 2nd Vice President, 1st Vice President, President and Parliamentarian. On the District Level, she served as: 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, Parliamentarian (2 terms), Home Life Chairman, Public Relations/Communication Chairman, President, where under her term, she helped lead District 1 to 1st place in the state, and she also served as Chaplain for 2 years.

On the GF/TFWC State Level, she held the positions of: International Affairs Chairman, Trade and Aid Chairman, Arts & Crafts Division Chairman, Music & Dance Chairman, Very Special Arts Chairman, Arts Department Chairman, Leadership Chairman, Chaplain and Resolutions Chairman. Jane was also a member of the England Society, where she was chosen as the Outstanding Woman for the TFWC and was chosen for the Tribute of Honor.

Other than her father, she was preceded in death by her grandparents: Robert & Fannie Keefauver; and grandmother, Mattie Harshbarger.

She is survived by her mother, Lucille Keefauver, Jonesborough; her husband of 47 years, Edwin W. Tolley, Erwin; her son, Joseph Christopher Tolley (Chris), of Erwin; sister & brother-in-law, Shirley and Bob McCracken, Rogersville, twin sister and brother-in-law, June and Jim Ingram, of Jonesborough; sister-in-law and husband, Janice & D.C. 2983 ERWIN – Helen "Faye" Edwards, age 75, 112 Edwards Road, Flag Pond, died Thursday, November 5, 2009, at the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit following a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Edwards was a lifelong Unicoi County resident and a daughter of the late Herman and Bethel Shelton Sparks.

She was retired from Morrill Electric following thirty-eight years of service.

Mrs. Edwards was a fifty year member of Jennie Moore Memorial Presbyterian Church.

She was a Past Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Flag Pond Chapter #173.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Edwards was preceded in death by her husband of forty-three years, Raymond Edwards, in 1994; a grandson, Raymond Wayne Edwards, in 1999; one brother, Dallas Sparks; and two sisters, Inas Higgins and Geneva English.

She is survived by one son, Darrell Edwards and wife, Michelle, Flag Pond; two daughters, Beverly Silvers and husband Stanley, Flag Pond, Sandra Tipton and husband, Gary, Erwin; three brothers, Clarence Sparks and wife, Mary, Edward Sparks and wife, Brenda, all of Flag Pond, and Donald Sparks and wife, Margie, Jonesborough; seven grandchildren, Amanda Benton, Myra Tipton, Matthew Wilson, Sarah Miller, Megan Briggs, Caleb Broyles and Jess Edwards; eight great-grandchildren, Ezekiel, Chevelle and Dora Benton, Chandra Edwards, Micah and Gabriel Miller, Emma Briggs and Raymond Andrew Edwards; several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Byrd lived most of her life in Erwin. She was a daughter of the late Dewey and Minnie Derafield Robinette. Mrs. Byrd was employed by Easy Painter where she worked as a packer for twenty-five years. She attended Unicoi Church of God.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Lee Byrd on August 17, 1994; one son, Russell Byrd; two brothers: Ernest Robinette and Leonard Robinette; one sister, Irene Tolley.

2985 ERWIN — Helen Calhoun Lauther, 91, of Erwin, passed away on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Daughter of the late Clyde and Cora Griffith Calhoun, Helen was a native of North Carolina and grew up in Erwin. Helen followed in the footsteps of her father, several cousins and uncle to enlist in the United States Army. She was trained as a nurse and worked in the Womans Army Corps for the duration of WWII. This is where she met her husband Carl.

After the Army, Helen continued working as a nurse at Broward General Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and also as private duty nurse. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and the Eastern Star in Florida.

Helen has had the privilege of visiting all of the states except the Dakotas and has traveled extensively in Europe. She has visited Russia, India, Kuwait, the Philippines and the Bahamas. She returned to Erwin in 2012 with her daughter, Ande Victoria, her best friend and cruising partner.

Helen sums up her life by stating, "life has passed by quickly, but I have been blessed and am being blessed everyday." She would encourage any young dreamer to never give up on their dreams. It often takes a blind leap of faith to get you where you want to be.

In addition to her parents, Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Carl of 53 years; daughter, Muriel Whitson Laird. He was born in Faust, NC. He was the son of Paul English and Inez Wing Sams. He worked for the former Clinchfield Railroad in various departments and later retired from the State of TN, Department of Children's Services.

He was a member of Erwin Presbyterian Church.

He graduated from East Tennessee State University and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity.

2989 ERWIN — Mr. Ernest C. Snyder, age 80, of 324 South Main Avenue, Erwin, died Wednesday, August 11, 2010, at his residence.

Mr. Snyder was a native of Charleston, West Virginia, moving as a young boy to Elizabethton, where he raised his family. He lived in Wilmington, North Carolina, for 23 years and has been a resident of Erwin since 1995. Mr. Snyder was a son of the late Edward and Hattie Day Snyder.

He was a Korean War U.S. Army Veteran. Mr. Snyder was of the Baptist Faith. He was a millwright working in Industrial Construction and had been employed for over 23 years with Tennessee Line and Twine in Elizabethton and retiring in 1995.

Mr. Snyder enjoyed working in his garage after retirement and also enjoyed restoring a 1966 Ford Mustang with his son, Jerry.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cora Mae Buchanan Snyder, in 2006; and brothers Ed, Jim and Bruce Snyder.

2990 ERWIN — Mrs. Hazel "Fern" McGuire Buchanan, born October 12, 1905, went home to be with her Savior Wednesday morning, January 9, 2008.

Fern was born and raised in the Beech Mountain Community of Watauga County, North Carolina. The daughter of George W. McGuire and Alice Trivette McGuire; and the granddaughter of George W. McGuire Sr. and Salley Greer.

Fern married the late Stokes Buchanan in December of 1924 and later moved from Plum Tree, North Carolina, to Elizabethton in 1926. Fern and Stokes moved to Hampton in 1937, later buying the Quality Market in Hampton that Fern operated until they sold the store in 1960. Fern, a devoted wife, traveled with her husband Stokes in his profession as a Construction Electrician, living in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, New York City and Frederick, Maryland.

Fern was a Christian woman and active as a leader in her church, Calvary Baptist Church of Elizabethton, Hampton Baptist and First Baptist Church of Erwin, serving as Sunday School teacher, President of the W.M.U. and Sunday School Superintendent.

Fern was also a past member of the Hampton Garden Club and a past officer and past president of the Erwin Women's Club, and an active member in P.T.A. when her children were in school. She was one of the founding members of the Unicoi County Heritage Museum.

Miss Fern as her friends called her was a avid quilter. Her quilts have been shown nationwide. Fern was honored for her work in quilting by piecing and quilting the Unicoi Square in the Tennessee Bi-Centennial quilt that is on display in Nashville. Her sewing skills resulted in her working at J.C. Penney in Elizabethton in the mid 1920s, later at Gimbels in New York City, and at Dosser's in Johnson City.

Fern in her 102 years touched the lives of many people with her Christian faith and outgoing personality.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Stokes Buchanan; along with an infant daughter, Alice Maxine Buchanan; brothers, Frank, Charlie, Roy, Jennings and Hurst McGuire; seven sisters Myra Trivette, Sarah Jones, Ida Ramsey, Frances McGuire, Vana Trivette, Erilene Church and Oda Jones.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Madge Buchanan, Erwin; one daughter, Phyllis Pinkerton, Kingsport; one sister, Blanch Harmon, Valdese, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Sam Pinkerton and wife, Chris Tipton, Erwin, Suzanne Cloninger and Daniel Malone, Kingsport, Sandra Thurmond and husband, Dave, Durham, North Carolina, Becky Buchanan and husband, John Simpkins, Washington D.C., Crystal and Matt Atkinson, Manassas, Virginia; three great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late Blaine and Zora Tilson Guinn. Mrs. Hoyle was a retired employee of Morrill Motors, where she had worked for over twenty years. She had also worked at Southern Pottery as a painter. Mrs. Hoyle was a member of the Clear Branch Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting and made a lot of her own clothes.

2993 ERWIN — Ruby Grace Collins Martin, age 91, went to be with her Lord Jesus on Sunday, May 29, 2011, at Unicoi County Long Term Care Facility in Erwin, TN, where she was lovingly cared for by a tremendous staff.

Mrs. Martin was born February 12, 1920, in Elizabethton, TN, the daughter of the late Ollie Gilson Collins and Dessie Nave Collins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Martin Jr.; and 5 brothers; and 4 sisters.

Ruby is survived by her sister, Wilma Jean Elliott (Elizabethton, TN).

She is also survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Adams and husband, Robert, (Dacula, GA); her son, Tony J. Martin and wife, Julia (Johnson City, TN); three granddaughters, Tonya Whitman, Jan Nagel and Tassy Von Kracke; and four grandsons, Travis Martin, Scott Adams, Brad Adams and Todd Adams; and 9 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruby Martin retired from J.C. Penney Company after working 28 years in May 1989, a job she dearly loved. Ruby was an active member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church for many years.

A Celebration of Life Service for Ruby Grace Collins Martin will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Friday, June 3, 2011, at Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services.

A Committal and Interment service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park Cemetery, Elizabethton. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

2994 ERWIN — Uteta Harris, age 75, 217 N. Willow Street, Erwin, died Saturday, November 15, 2008, at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital.

A native of Unicoi County, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Martha Phillips Brummett. She was the former manager of Top Dollar, TG&Y and had worked at Roller Pharmacy in Erwin. She attended Hulen Avenue Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Harris in 1992, and a sister, Verl Helton.

She is survived by: Daughter: Vikki Greene and husband, Mike, Hildebran, NC. Sons: Ed Harris and wife, Joanie, Erwin; Frank Harris and wife, Kim, White, GA. Brothers: Jim Brummett and wife Mildred, Gray, TN; Robert Brummett and wife Vivian, Wheeler, CA. Grandchildren: Andrea Williams, Dillon Harris, Tyler Greene, Tonya Caseral, Trenton Greene, Nathan Harris, Bathe Harris. Great-Grandchildren: Austin, Drew and Savannah Williams Alisha, Christina and Elizabeth Caseral Quinton Harris and Damion Heard. A funeral service officiated by Reverend Ferrell Peterson will be held on Monday, November 17, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Valley Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until the time of the service. Interment services will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery. Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery by 12:50 p.m.

2995 ERWIN — Violet Renfro Mathes, 92, formerly of 890 Rock Creek Road, Erwin, passed away on Thursday, July 7, 2016, at Center on Aging and Health.

She was a native of Unicoi County and a daughter of the late Ruben M. and Frances Honeycutt Renfro. Violet worked for the former Southern Potteries and later in her career worked in retail food sales and management, including the former Coley's. Ms. Mathes was proud that her husband, father and brother served in the United States Military as she spoke of this often. She was a member of Rock Creek Presbyterian Church. She had many lifelong friends who valued her friendship as she valued theirs. She loved her children and they were most important to her.

Violet Mathes has left behind to cherish her memories, son, Michael L. 2996 ERWIN — James Milton McInturff, age 89, of Erwin, passed away, Thursday, January 19, 2012, at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital.

Mr. McInturff was a lifelong native of Erwin and a son of the late Charlie and Mamie Randolph McInturff. James was a self employed carpenter and retired from CSX Railroad as an inspector. He served in the Army during WWII. He attended Evergreen Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by his wife, June Story McInturff; two sons: Jimmy Jr. and Edward McInturff; several brothers and sisters.

2997 ERWIN — Wiley Tipton, 94, formerly of 1330 Martin Creek road, Erwin died Sunday, March 18, 2007, at Erwin Health Care.

He was a native of Lost Cove, N.C. and a son of the late Dock and Usley Hensley Tipton. He served as a Sergeant with the U.S. Army in Germany, Hawaii and Ireland during W.W. II. He retired form P.C. Cooper Construction as a heavy equipment operator. During his life he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and playing baseball.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Charlotte Banner Tipton in 1999; by one step-son, Harold William "Dooley" Ingram in 1985; by three brothers, Bill, Herman and Albert Tipton; by two sisters, Ethel Hampton and Dora Honeycutt.

He leaves behind: One step-daughter: Winsie Robinson and husband Eugene, Erwin. Jacob Ingram, Erwin. Two sisters: Geneva McNabb, Erwin, Edna Robbins, Erwin. Three step-grandchildren: Wanda Smith and husband, Lee, Erwin, William Harold Ingram, Jr, and wife Sherry, Erwin, Myron Robinson, Boca Roton, FL. Four step-great-grandchildren: Les Smith and wife Laraine, Johnson City, Derek Smith, Tampa, FL. Kyle Robinson, Boca Raton, FL.

2998 ERWIN---The Reverend Arthur Renfro, age 76, 135 Scalf Road, Chuckey, Tenn., went home Sunday morning.
He was the son of the late Dewey Lattie Renfro and Mary Lee Coffey Renfro of Erwin.
In the early 1950s, he served in the U.S. Navy. A well-known pastor and evangelist for the past 43 years, the Rev. Renfro served as pastor of Cherry Hill F.W.B. Church, Limestone; Roan Street F.W.B. Church, Elizabethton; Lowes Chapel F.W.B. Church, Newport; Liberty F.W.B. Church, of the South Central Community; and Friendship F.W.B. Church, Pell City, Ala.
In addition to his parents, the Rev. Renfro was preceded in death by two sisters, Virginia Freeman, of Jonesborough, and Lucille Ray, of Travelers Rest, S.C.
The Reverend Renfro is survived by his partner, friend, and wife of 54 years, Vivian Renfro, of the home; two daughters, Joan and her husband, John Stuart, Chuckey, Tenn., and Janet and her husband, Billy Osborne, Pell City, Ala.; two sons, Daryl and wife, Janie Renfro, Chuckey, Tenn., and Lee and wife, Patty Renfro, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four sisters, Anna Mae Tittle, Emma Jean Fowler, Marie Tittle, and Carolyn Haines, all of Erwin; one brother, J.C. Renfro, Erwin; twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and cousins, and a host of brothers and sisters in Christ.
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 7, 2007, from 6 - 9 p.m. in the chapel of Valley Funeral Home.
A Home Going Celebration will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. in Liberty F.W.B. Church, South Central Community. Rev. Renfro will lie in state one hour prior to service.
Services will be conducted by the Rev. Joe Bible, the Rev. Richard Tittle, the Rev. Gary Norton, and the Rev. Anthony Payne. Music will be provided by Andrew Landers, Gena Martin, and Sheila Balch.
The final resting place will be the Bethesda Church Cemetery, Jonesborough, and will follow Home Going Celebration. Pallbearers will be selected from the grandsons, nephew, and special friends of the church.

A native of Avery County she was a daughter of the late Jonathon and Lucy Huskins Ollis and was the Owner and Operator of Beam’s Restaurant. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband James Ramey Beam, a son; Bob Beam, a grandson, Kevin Beam, two sisters; Ada Minton and Ida Miller and four brothers; Council Ollis, Kelsey Ollis, Kelly Ollis, and Ted Ollis. Survivors include four daughters; Barbara Stradley of Statesville, NC, Berenda Eng and husband Richard of Spruce Pine, Bonita Bishop and husband Douglas of Hickory, NC and Beverly VanRoekel and husband Johnnie of Lexington, NC, a sister, Nellie Hall of Spruce Pine and a daughter in law Margaret Beam of Newland. 3000 Estal Edwards, age 82, of Altapass Highway in Spruce Pine died Thursday, January 28, 2016 at his home.
Born on December 30, 1933 in Yancey County, he was the son of the late Braskie and Lula Tolley Edwards. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother; Ray Edwards and a sister; Velva Ramsey.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife of forty-six years; Charlotte Biddix Edwards of the home; his daughters; Patsy Edwards of Spruce Pine and Jennifer Clem and husband, Joel of Wilmington, NC; his sons; Sean Edwards of Spruce Pine and Jonathan Edwards and wife, Amy of Nebo.
