2651 ELIZABETHTON - Richard Gale Williams, age 62, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at his residence.

Richard was born in Elizabethton to the late Hoover and Rada Peters Williams. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Herbert Williams and Lynice Ritchie.

Richard was a graduate of Unaka High School and had worked for Grady’s Drycleaners in Johnson City for many years, also, he helped open and worked at Tri-Cities Wholesale Tobacco Store #1 in Boones Creek. Richard was once a member of the Carter County Rescue Squad. He also drove a school bus for Carter County bus garage and did transporting for the Norfolk Southern Railroad Company in Bristol. Richard was of the Christian faith and attended Pleasant Beach Baptist Church.

Richard loved to sing, loved a good joke and announced local wrestling events/ E.C.W. and others. He also enjoyed working the old scoreboard for Nascar at BMS races. Richard also sang with different groups both gospel and country. Richard was a band booster member for several years for the Betsy Band in Elizabethton, Tennessee. He also enjoyed camping at Little Wilbur and Roan Mountain campground. Richard had also coached a girls’ softball team junior league for Stacey’s Carpet during the years of 1985 - 1987.

Those left to cherish his many wonderful memories include his fiancé, Helen Harris, of the home; his children, Richard Shane Williams and wife Jessica, of Unicoi County, Heather Diane Williams and fiancé Kenneth Harrison II, of Johnson City and daughters-to-be, Heather Reed and Melissa Landry; his special friend/ brother, Danny Simmons, Tommy Addair, Randall Chapman, Earl and Jaye Hattan; eleven grandchildren, Hannah, Olivia, Kelsey, Kenneth III, Elijah, all from Johnson City, TN, Steven and Salym, of Elizabethton, Brooklynn, Charlie, Jonas, all of Kingsport and Betsy, of Virginia Beach, VA; a great granddaughter, Annabelle; and two siblings, Patricia “Trish” Carden and Jessie Williams. Several cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.

2652 ELIZABETHTON - Richard Sherrill “Dick” Fair, age 82, of Elizabethton, died Thursday October 7, 2021 following a lengthy illness. He was born in Carter County on May 14, 1939 and was a son of Luther and Thelma Crete Stout Fair. Dick was a member of the Centerview Church of Christ and was a retired over the road truck driver for Roadway Express with 28 years of service. He was a 1957 graduate of Elizabethton High School. Prior to driving for Roadway Express, he was a dock supervisor for Mason and Dixon Freight Lines and was also a supervisor for the Polyester Plant of North American Rayon. He was a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge, #238 F and A M, a member of Knoxville Consistory of Scottish Rite and the Jericho Shrine Temple. He was a member of the Elizabethton Shrine Band and the Jesters of Jericho Temple. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Rhonda Fair.
He is survived by his son Rick Fair of Phoenix, Arizona, his sister, Rebecca Lou Fair Barr of Elizabethton, two grandchildren, Travis Fair and Curtis Fair, four great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Travis Jr., Julian and Iryiana, one niece and three nephews, his best friends Victor and Judy Deloach, a special friend Kathy McGee and numerous cousins.
A service to honor the life of Richard “Dick” Fair will be conducted at 7:00 PM Tuesday, October 12, 2021, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Mr. Tony Hoss, Minister officiating. Music will be provided by Jerry Pierce soloist. Following the service Masonic rites will be accorded by the Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238 F&AM.
The family will receive friends in the chapel of the funeral home from 5:00 Tuesday until the service hour.
Interment will be in the Garden of Freedom at Happy Valley Memorial Park

2653 ELIZABETHTON - Rita Grindstaff "Mattie" Payne, 87, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, June 28, 2023 in the Hermitage Health Center. She was born February 11, 1936, in Carter County to the late Elbert Clinton and Golda Mae Hardin Grindstaff. Mattie was a 1954 Graduate of Unaka High School. She was a homemaker. She was an extremely good Pianist and Organist, having played in church for several years. She was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her husband: Nathaniel C. Payne; one brother and sister-in-law: Henry Anthony & Betty Grindstaff of Bristol, Tenn; also, several special nieces and nephews.

Mattie will be buried in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Everything will be private.

2654 ELIZABETHTON - Robenia Letterman Hall, age 89, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Friday, November 18, 2022 in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Yancey County, NC, She was the daughter of the late James David Letterman and Sarah Ann Ayers Letterman. She was a graduate of Elizabethton High School Class of 1951. Robenia retired after 40 ½ years of service with Sprint/ United Telephone Company. She was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church and formerly attended First Christian Church of Elizabethton. In her spare time she enjoyed crocheting and cheering on the Atlanta Braves, North Carolina Tar Heels and the Lady Vols.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 ½ years, Carmal Hall; sister, Mary Letterman; brothers, David Letterman, Frank Letterman, Robert Letterman, James Letterman, Dock Letterman and Claude Letterman.

2655 ELIZABETHTON - Robert "Dale" Bowling, Jr., 49 of Elizabethton passed away on Sunday, December 16, 2018.

A native and lifelong member of the Elizabethton community, he is the son of Dale Bowling, Sr. He is preceded in death by grandparents, Elmer and Lillian Bowling.

Dale was a loving husband, father, and great and loyal friend to many. He graduated from Happy Valley High School and was very proud of his accomplishments in baseball, basketball, and especially football. He proudly served six years in the US Air Force. Dale has worked for Whitehead Construction Incorporated for the past seven years as Vice President.

In addition to his father, those left to cherish Dale's memory include: wife, Bernadette; children, Cara Bowling and Christopher Bowling; sister, Kristie Bowling; niece, Kaitlyn Bowling; and nephew, Logan Bowling.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to his dear friend, Michael Whitehead of Whitehead Construction Inc., who was more like a brother to him.

A visitation will be held in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services, Johnson City on Friday, December 21, 2018 beginning at 11:00 am until a celebration of Robert's life beginning at 1:00 pm with Rev. Harold Morelock officiating. A graveside service will follow at Mountain Home National Cemetery at 2:30 pm. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

2656 ELIZABETHTON - Robert E. "Bob" Hamby, age 89, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Saturday, July 1, 2023 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was the son of the late William H. and Minnie Hamby. Bob was a U.S. Veteran serving in the Airforce. He received his Bachelor's of Science degree from ETSU. He retired from Mountain Home VA Medical Center as a therapist after a 40-year career. After retirement, he went on to work at the Elizabethton Golf Course. Bob was an avid golfer, a big UT Vols fan and a recipient of the Happy Valley High School All Watauga Conference Award. He was a great family man, and a member of Central Community Christian Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Lloyd Hamby; sisters, Marie Bunton, Nell Stewart, Betty Jo Williams and Mae Odom and his beloved dog, Winnie. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Charlotte Hamby, of the home; three children, Terri Hamby-Hager and husband Chris Hager, Karen Hamby Hughes and husband, William "Eddie" and Bobby Hamby and fiancé, Melinda Chaber; grandchildren, McKenzie Hughes Miller and husband Matthew, Jared and Carli Hamby; two great-granddaughters, Kyndall and Charlotte Miller; sister, Maxine Woods; several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Bob will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, July 6, 2023 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home Elizabethton with Mr. Todd Wolfe officiating. The family will receive friends between the hours of 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM prior to the service on Thursday.

The graveside service and committal will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 7, 2023 in the Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Bobby Hamby, Chris Hager, Matthew Miller, Jared Hamby and Jimmy Bunton. Honorary pallbearers are Eddie Hughes, Marvin Rogers and Jerry Elliott.

2657 ELIZABETHTON - Robert Earl Pilk, 88, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully at his home after a brief illness. He was born in Butler, Tn. on May 12, 1932 and passed away on February 28, 2021. He was a retired carpenter having worked all around the United States.

He was preceded in death by his mother: Lockie Turbyfield and three brothers, Homer Pilk, Lacy Pilk, Doran Turbyfield and one sister: Virginia Morrell.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 69 years: Helen Ruth May Pilk, three sons: Robert Jack Pilk, Richard Allen Pilk and wife Johnnie Ann, Timothy Edward Pilk and wife Sharon Elaine and two grandchildren: Lucas Allen Pilk and wife Danielle all of Elizabethton and Ambrosia Nicole LeRoy and husband Cory of Jacksonville, Florida. One Sister: Georgia Nell Turbyfield of Butler. Also several in-laws, nieces, nephews and many special friends. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church.

He loved to hunt, fish and watch old western movies with his sons. He enjoyed portraying the Indian Chief “AttaKullaKulla” in the outdoor drama “Liberty” at Sycamore Shoals State Park for many years. He will be missed greatly by his family and many friends.

A Memorial Service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Campbell officiating. Interment will be at Happy Valley Memorial Park at a later date.

2658 ELIZABETHTON - Robert G. Elliott, age 90, of Elizabethton went to be with his Lord on Sunday, April 23, 2023. He was born on September 11, 1932 to the late J. Deal and Margaret Elliott.

Robert was a Staff Sargent having served in the Airforce during the Korean War. He graduated from Unaka High School and attended East TN State College. Robert held several positions in the Plastic Industry including Sales Manager of the Automotive Plastic Division of Rockwell International. He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed listening to Dr. Charles Stanley every Sunday.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Marie Love Elliott; son. Michael Elliott; brother-in-law, J.D. Elliott and sister-in-law, Christine Elliott. Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Dennis Elliott, of Elizabethton; daughter, Robin Sutherland and husband Tim, of Haysi, VA; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Robert’s wish was for a private graveside service in the Mountain Home National Cemetery.

2659 ELIZABETHTON - Robert L. "Bob" White, age 78, of Elizabethton went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

Bob was born in Carter County to the late Willard and Wilma Lewis White. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Bobbi Rena White Tittle.

Bob was a loving husband and father. He was an active member of Doe River Baptist Church, where he founded the Christian Life Center. Bob retired from the Internal Revenue Service after 32 years of service. Upon his retirement he owned and operated his own tax practice, Robert L. White and Associates for 20 years. He was a member of the Carter County Humane Society, where he served as treasurer for over 25 years. In his leisure time he enjoyed golfing and watching UT sports.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 40 years, Penny Tester White, of the home; daughter, Candice Lynn Sieiro and husband Anthony, of Columbia, SC; son, Michael Ott White, of Nashville, TN; his grandchildren, Walt Tittle, III and wife Brooke, of Jonesborough, TN and Lindsay Franks and husband Taylor, also of Jonesborough, TN; one great grandson, Walt Tittle, IV; brother, Max White and wife Brenda, of Elizabethton, TN; sister, Susan Townsend, of Tampa, FL. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Robert L. "Bob" White will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Friday, August 17, 2018 at Doe River Baptist Church of Elizabethton with Rev. Daniel Fink and Rev. Jim Hawk, officiating. Music will be provided by Charlotte Crumley. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the church, prior to the service on Friday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 18, 2018 in the Lakeview Cemetery in Butler, TN. Active pallbearers will be the men of Doe River Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Whitt, Jerry Wheeler, Larry Finney, Carl Vogel, Alec Vogel, Teddy Sims, Rick Largent, Russ Becker and his golfing buddies.

2660 ELIZABETHTON - Robert Lee Lewis, age 83, of Elizabethton, Tennessee passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, December 22, 2019. Robert was born in Elizabethton to the late Thomas J. Lewis and Ruth Wright Lewis.

Robert was a loving and loyal husband and father and was a great fisherman. He was a member of Lynn Valley Baptist Church and was retired from Kennametal, where he had worked for 32 years and had a perfect attendance record. Robert was 2nd in the State as a Golden Glove Boxer and was a blood donor awardee for his many blood donations throughout the years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.

Those left to cherish his many wonderful memories include his wife of 56 years, Judy Lewis, of the home; his son, Shannon Lewis; his grand-dog, Rowdy; one brother, Gordon Lewis; three sisters, Patsy Leonard and husband Bernard, Roma Smith and husband Pat, and Janice Whittaker and husband David; a brother-in-law, Joe Stonecipher and wife Jenny; and three sisters-in-law, Joan Boardman and husband Ted, Diana Edwards and husband Terry and Bobbie Stonecipher.

A service to celebrate the life of Robert Lee Lewis will be conducted at 6:00 PM on Thursday, December 26, 2019 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Dennis Wilson, officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Friday, December 27, 2019 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. 2661 ELIZABETHTON - Roger Carver, age 78, of Elizabethton, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

Roger was born in Elizabethton to the late Howard and Lorene Simerly Carver. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Loretta Deadrick.

Roger retired from Snap-On Tools and had previously driven a truck for Newton Transportation. He was a United States Army veteran and was a member of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church, where he was a former trustee of the church and was a member of the Adult Men's Sunday School class. Roger loved to tinker with his Jeeps, enjoyed cars, loved being in in the mountains and spending time with his family and friends.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 56 years, Lois Carver, of the home; six nieces, Alice Marie Pendergast (Mike), of NC, Ann Taylor (Javy), of Elizabethton, Debbie Bishop, of Johnson City, Joyce Salyer (Roy), of Elizabethton, Lisa Pierce (Phil), of Kingsport, and Karen Southerland (Brian), of Nashville; one nephew, Michael Southerland (Joan), of Jacksonville, FL; one sister-in-law, Virginia Grindstaff, of Elizabethton; five brothers-in-law, Owen Grindstaff and wife Dee, John Lewis, Marvin Grindstaff, Bill Milhorn, and Byrd Deadrick and wife Ellen, all of Elizabethton. Several great nieces and nephews also survive, as well as two special friends, Harry B. Crowe and Bill Fritz.

A service to honor the life of Roger Carver will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 5, 2018 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Eric Heaton, officiating. Music will be provided by Dale Williams and Joyce Salyer. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Friday.

The graveside service will follow in the Ensor Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be Harry B. 2662 ELIZABETHTON - Roger Dale Pierce, 73, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, October 20, 2022 in the Johnson City Medical Center, after a short illness with his family by his side. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Ellis & Goldie Blackwell Pierce. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. Roger served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam Era. Roger worked as a welder and millwright and retired from Daniels Construction at Eastman. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a generous, gifted and loving brother and friend. He was a wonderful husband always aspiring to care for Debbie. Roger was a member of First Christian Church and was a devoted student of the word of God. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his in-laws: Mary and Eugene Bowers.

Survivors include his wife: Debbie Bowers Pierce, His Brothers: Terry (Barbara) Pierce and Bruce (Mary) Pierce. The family would like to thank those at Franklin-Woods and the Johnson City Medical Center for the care Roger received.

2663 ELIZABETHTON - Ronald Eugene"Pappy" Trivett, 75, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, October 11, 2019 at his residence after a brief illness.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Culbie & Novella Simerly Trivett. Ronnie was a 1962 graduate of Hampton High School. He served in the United States Army and the Tennessee National Guard. He formerly was employed at North American Rayon Corporation, a bus driver and was a Carter County Commissioner for over 20 years. Ronnie was a member of Slagles United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Watauga Masonic Lodge # 622. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Ruthie Trivett and a nephew: Timmy Oliver. He was an avid fisherman & hunter.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years: Patsy Guinn Trivett. A Daughter & Son-In-Law: Lynnetta Trivett & Leo Lothridge. A son: Tony Trivett. His Granddaughters: Ashley (Michael) Shouse and Whitney (BK) Marlowe. His Great Grandchildren: Sutton Marlowe, Hadley Shouse, Destiny, Cadence & Addison Lothridge. His Step-Grandsons: Todd & Adam Lothridge. His Sisters: Kathy (Butch) Oliver and Brenda Hunter.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Charlie Trivett and Pastor Lou Crandall and Pastor Mike Berry officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 15, 2019 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Music will be provided by Gail McClure. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 12:45 p.m. Tuesday will be: Leo Lothridge, B.K. Marlowe, Michael Shouse, Ronnie McClure, Keith Trivett and Steve Trivett. Honorary Pallbearers will be: his church family, past & present Commissioners of the Carter County Court and all his family and friends.

2664 ELIZABETHTON - Rosa "Rose" Dugger Hodge, age 89, left this earthly life to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 10 at her residence.

A native of Johnson County, she was the daughter of the late Hiram Hunter Dugger and Barbara Elizabeth Keller Dugger. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hodge was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Claude Hodge; two sisters, Geneva Belle Pilkin and Mary Kate Fritts; and two brothers, Truman Dugger and James Edward Dugger.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sister, Hazel Amanda Pierce, Piney Flats; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; her special friend and companion, Ralph L. Gouge, Elizabethton. Rose considered Ralph's family as her special extended family, including his daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Gary Pierce, Bristol, along with their children James Pierce, Johnson City, and Wendy Hill, Knoxville; and Susan and John Estep, Elizabethton, with their sons Andrew Estep and Justin Estep, Elizabethton, who loveingly called her "Granny Rose." She also leaves behind her special friends, Kyle and Phyllis Gouge, of Johnson City.

Rose was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church. She was retired from United Telephone after 30 years of service and also retired from the US Forestry Service after more than 10 years of service. Rose was a member of the Republican Women and was active in numerous other organizations.

A service to celebrate the life of Rosa "Rose" Dugger Hodge will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, June 15, 2017 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday. Friends may also visit with the family at the home of her sister, Hazel Pierce, Piney Flats, or at the residence of Ralph Gouge 228 Steel Bridge Road, Elizabethton.

The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

2665 ELIZABETHTON - Rosa Mae Jung, age 91, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 1, 2019 from her residence.

Rosa was born in Banner Elk, North Carolina to the late Dolphus and Lena Holden Harmon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond C. Jung; a son, Joseph Jung; three brothers, Roy Harmon, J.R. Harmon and Leroy Dolphus; and a sister, Sada Townsend.

Rosa was a loving mother and was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed flower gardening, cooking, canning and country music.

Those left to cherish her memories include two daughters, Janice Copeland and husband Mike, of Riverside, CA and Theresa Watkins and husband Randy, of Elizabethton,TN; four sons, John Jung, of the home, Thomas Jung, of Elizabethton, James Jung, also of Elizabethton and Kennis Jung, of Murfreesboro, TN; seven grandchildren, Michael Copeland, of GA, Tracy Reed, of OR, Tara Christiansen, of NC, Tiffany Watkins, of Elizabethton, Brandon Jung, of Johnson City, Kelsey Jung, also of Johnson City and Ray Jung, of Columbia, TN. Several great grandchildren also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Rosa Mae Jung will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, April 4, 2019 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Father Dennis Kress, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday or at the residence at other times.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Shoun & Blanche Whitehead Roberson. She was a graduate of Cloudland High School. She was a homemaker. Rosalee loved quilting, sewing and sending cards of encouragement. She was one of the founding members of Blevins Chapel. In earlier years she attended Green Mountain Freewill Baptist Church Baptist Church and later attended Grace Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Lee Markland, and two sisters: Myrsona Shell and Glenda Shell.
Survivors include her daughter: Cathy Laura Hyder & husband Samuel, Roan Mountain. One Sister: Donalee Presnell, Roan Mountain.

2667 ELIZABETHTON - Roy "Dan" Rash, age 59, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 4, 2019 at his residence.

Roy was born in Carter County, Tennessee to the late William Roy Rash and Leota Walker Rash. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ron W. Rash.

Dan had worked as a technician for Duncan Gas and then for Heritage Propane for almost 30 years. He was baptized at Pleasant Beach Baptist Church and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Roan Mountain and the Moose Lodge. Dan loved long rides through the mountains and watching movies. His favorite show was Andy Griffith and he was always known to be a happy person.

2668 ELIZABETHTON - Roy Jack Bowers, 81, Elizabethton, known to everyone as R.J., passed away in the Johnson City Medical Center Friday, May 7, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Haskel and Bonnie Hyder Bowers and a brother, Jerry Bowers.

R.J. was employed by Sherwood Chevrolet for many years. During his retirement, he enjoyed working with his friends at City Market.

A friend to everyone, each day, R.J. could be found at Bowers Auto Sales enjoying the company of his brothers, Jerry and Tony, and the many friends who stopped by to “loaf”.

His favorite place to be was with his family, He was a quiet, sweet spirit who was happiest being with those he loved. Although R.J. never had children of his own, his five nieces were his pride and joy, until his great-nieces and great nephews entered the picture. He became the extra grandparents they did not know they needed. He loved being doted on by his nieces and the laughter and love the “greats” brought.

R.J. is survived by his brother and sister-in-law: Tony and Linda Bowers, his sister-in-law, Marilyn Bowers, his five nieces: Lynn (Otis) Webb, Debbie (Chris) Guy, Jacqui (Joe Hyder) Bowers, Becky (Rodney) McBride and Jessica (Jesse) Boyd. His Great nephews, Logan Guy, Max (Cheyenne) Kelly, Garrison McBride, Jackson McBride and Cooper Livingston. His Great nieces: Reagan Kelly, Ashlynn Guy, and Maddie McBride. 2669 ELIZABETHTON - Ruby Carol Hodge Treadway, 75, Elizabethton passed away Friday, June 11, 2021 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born April 6, 1946 to the late John & Alice Morton Hodge. Carol was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. She was a retired employee of Happy Valley Credit Union. Carol attended Zion Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Charles “Blue” Treadway who passed away April 26, 2016 and by a sister: Wilma Hampton. Carol loved Blue Grass Music, loved being around people and spending time with her family most of all her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughters & sons-in-law: Carrie & Johnnie Wilson and Kellee & Brandon Blevins. Four Grandchildren: Kaylee Wilson, Nathan Wilson, Eli Blevins and Clayton Blevins. 2670 ELIZABETHTON - Ruth (Hampton) Street, age 91, of Elizabethton, Tennessee passed away on Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Signature Health Center and Rehab from Colitis. Ruth was a lifelong resident of Carter County and was the daughter of the late Dewey G. Hampton and Beulah Kinley Hampton. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, Eckert Street on February 21, 2010.
Ruth was a devout Christian lady and was the oldest member of Centerview Church of Christ.
Ruth is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Cannon and husband Butch, Kathern Green and husband Stanley all of Elizabethton; her son, Danny Street and wife Teresa also of Elizabethton; her brother, Bill Hampton and wife Sharron of Elizabethton; Earl Hampton, who was like a brother to her; also a family sister, Judy Green, who Ruth thought of as a daughter; her grandchildren, Terry Cannon and fiancé Dawn Lowe, Brad and April Green, Lance and Ashleigh Green, Jennifer and Chris Hanson, Ashley and Andrew Bowman; her great grandchildren, Jace Bowman, Blakely Bowman, Ava Grace Hanson, Eleanor Green & Eisleigh Green. Several nieces and nephews, church family and her special friends, Lou Cooter, Chris Cantey and June Crowe also survive.

2671 ELIZABETHTON - Ruth Bryson Ritchie, age 93, of Elizabethton, went to be with her Lord on Friday, December 23, 2022 from Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late Charles Thomas “CT” and Irene Higdon Bryson and was born in Franklin, NC on April 5, 1929. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-nine years, Sam Q. Ritchie and a sister, Mildred Moore. Ruth retired from WBEJ Radio Station as the General Manager after forty years of service. During her many years there, she was an on-air personality for the “Who’s New in Pink and Blue” and the “What’s Cooking” programs. She also worked as a bookkeeper at Motor Parts.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church since 1948 where she worked in many positions in the church as was needed.

During her life, Ruth served on several organizations in the community including the Elizabethton City Council where she served as Mayor-Pro-Tem from 1977-1981. She also served on the Carter County Memorial Hospital Board Control in 1981 as well as the Board of Directors for Northeast Community Services Agency and the Board of Directors for Elizabethton Public Library. Ruth was honored as the Outstanding Female Citizen of Carter County from 1979-1980 and the Business and Professional Women Woman of the Year in 1981.

Those left to cherish her many memories include a son, Sam Q. Ritchie, II of Elizabethton; and a grandson, Nikolas Ritchie and wife Savannah of Chicago, IL. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Ruth Bryson Ritchie will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Friday, December 30, 2022 at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Reverend Raymond Amos officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. David Arney. The family will receive friends from 12:00 – 1:00 PM prior to the service on Friday.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Wayne & Maude Robinson Stout. She had lived in Elizabethton for several years. Ruth was a graduate of Johnson County High School and attended East Tennessee State College. She retired from Burlington Industries, Mountain City. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, Elizabethton and the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was a former member of First Baptist Church, Mountain City, and was a former member and Choir Director of Little Doe Baptist Church, Butler. She was a member of Butler Chapter, Eastern Star. In addition to her parents, she was preceded death by her husband: Ross H. Grindstaff who died September 30, 1993, and by a daughter: Sherry Grindstaff Mock, who passed away November 24, 2015.

Survivors include her daughter & son-in-law: Melody & David Crockett, Elizabethton. Four Grandchildren: Brad Proffitt, Jeremy Proffitt , Xandi Crockett , and Jessi Eller. A special granddaughter: Linda Scalf. Two Great Grandchildren: Dylan Proffitt and Kimberly Ann Proffitt. 2673 ELIZABETHTON - Sam Q. Ritchie, age 91, of Elizabethton, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2017 at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tennessee.

Sam was born in Carter County on September 30, 1926 to the late D.E. Ritchie and Belle Murray Ritchie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nine siblings.

Sam graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1945 and then attended Steed College. He was a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II.

Sam received his pilot's license at the age of 58 and was the former owner and operator of Sam Q's Restaurant in Elizabethton. He had also worked with his brother at Ritchie's Furniture.

Sam was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton, was a former member of the Carter County School Board, a former member of the Carter County Election Commission, a former member of the Jaycees and loved football and flying.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 69 years, Ruth Bryson Ritchie, of the home; his son, Sam Q. Ritchie, II, of Elizabethton; and his grandson, Nikolas Ritchie and wife Savannah, of Chicago, Illinois. Several nieces and nephews also survive, including two special nieces, Carla Cox and Margo Bentley.

A service to celebrate the life of Sam Q. Ritchie will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Friday, October 27, 2017 at First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton with Reverend Raymond Amos, Sr., officiating. Music will be under the direction of the First United Methodist Church Choir, Tyler Fleming and David Arney. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the church, prior to the service on Friday; or at his residence at other times.

2674 ELIZABETHTON - Samuel R. Crowder, age 84, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 11, 2022 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Sam was born in Carter County, a son of the late Henry Grady Crowder and Fannie Elvira Crowder. In addition to his parents, Sam was also preceded in death by seven sisters, Florence, Ella, Edith, Dena, Geneva, Massie and Marie; five brothers, Dock, Don, Jack, Fred and Marcus; one grandchild, Samuel Jason Barnett; and his son-in-law, Johnny Barnett.

Sam was a loving husband, father and grandfather and was a member of Harmony Baptist Church. He owned and operated J & S Fence Company and was a United States Army veteran. Sam had been a member of the Elizabethton High School Sports Boosters Club in years past and enjoyed UT Sports and spending as much time as possible with his beloved family, especially his granddaughter and great grandchildren.

Those left to remember and cherish Sam’s legacy include his wife, Loretta Shull Crowder; his children, Rene Barnett (Benny Montgomery) and Samuel (Sambo) Crowder, II (Missi); his sisters, Mary Lyons, Ida (Jack) Tkatch and Isabelle Bowers; his granddaughter, Jessica Barnett Markland (Justyn); his great grandchildren, Arya Markland and Ezra Markland; as well as bonus grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

2675 ELIZABETHTON - Scotty Lynn Hughes, 60, Elizabethton, passed away Monday, October 10, 2022 at his residence. He was born December 7, 1961 to the late Dewey Lynn Hughes and Dorothy Dugger Hughes McQueen. Scotty was a 1980 graduate of Johnson County High School. He retired from the United States Navy after 20 years of service. He received the following awards: Sailor of the year in 1995. His metals were The Navy Rifle Marksmanship, Navy Expeditionary and the Armed Forces Expeditionary. His final rank was Leading Chief Petty Officer. Scotty served on the US Navy Submarines: USS Newport News, USS Atlanta, USS Ainsworth and the USS Seawolf. He loved sports was an avid golfer, an avid UT Volunteer fan and the Atlanta Braves and the Dallas Cowboys. He was a former member of the Dixie Youth League and struck out 16 of 18 batters in 1974. Scotty was a member of the Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church and the Men’s Bible Class.

Survivors include his son, Andrew Hughes, Suffolk, Virginia; one granddaughter, Madelyn Hughes; one brother, George (Lori “Leroy”) Hughes, Weslaco, Texas; two nieces, Maggie (Josh) Balboa, and Kelly (Troy) Davis; one nephew, Chris (Alysia) Hughes; his special friends, Dave Snyder, Curtis Gentry, Kevin Pittman, Jonathan Hankins, Steve Harsh and Mike White.

Roark and Arrie Street Roark. Shelley was an Alumni of East Tennessee University where he received his Bachelor’s degree. He worked as an Environmental Specialist and retired from the City of Elizabethton. Shelley was a member of Milligan Free Will Baptist Church. He enjoyed UT Vols, Tennessee Titans, ETSU football, Nascar, Wrestling and watching Elizabethton High School sports. Shelley loved spending time with his family; especially his nephews and niece.

2677 ELIZABETHTON - Sherry Lynn Lipford Kyte, age 71, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at her residence.

She was born to Glenn (Buster) Lipford and Margaret Peters Lipford Edens on July 17, 1947, in Johnson County, TN, but lived most of her life in Carter County. She was proceeded in death by her parents, grandparents, Earl and Pearl Lipford of Butler, and Elijah and Ellen Eggers Peters of Elizabethton and two aunts, Ruth Lipford Williams and Mildred Peters Hart.

Sherry was a graduate of Happy Valley High School, Class of 1965. She worked at Sears for eight and one-half years and retired from Elizabethton Federal Savings Bank after thirty-nine and one-half years.

She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-three years, James Russell Kyte; a devoted son, David Glen Kyte, Elizabethton, TN; her favorite granddaughter, Taylor Jules Kyte, Charlotte, NC; one sister, Glenda (Wayne) Treadway, Dandridge, TN; one nephew, William Glenn Treadway, Murray, KY; cousin/sister, Sue Carol (Darrell) Ward, Butler, TN and many cousins.

Sherry was also blessed with a large family of Kyte-in-laws, whom she loved dearly; special friends, Sherry Maines and Ginny McGee; her Sims Hill Christian Church family; members of The Followers Sunday School Class and special Elizabethton Federal Bank family.

Special caregivers to Sherry were Teresa Phipps, Linda Henry, Shoddie Kyte, Sherry Maines, Ginny McGee, Debbie Reeser, Sue Carol Ward and Glenda Treadway.

Sherry was an active member of Sims Hill Christian Church where she served on several committees including the Youth Committee. She taught children to love Jesus for over fifty years. Being a witness for Jesus was her passion and her faith in Jesus never wavered. She was a strength to all and set an awesome example to her family and friends on how to live for Jesus and love others on a daily basis.

Shirley was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late Paul F. Arnold and Jewell Lyons Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Jerry Wayne Grindstaff on April 22, 2017; and her only child, Rachel Leanne Grindstaff on July 29, 2007.

Shirley was a homemaker and was a member of Unaka Baptist Church where she had served as church clerk, Sunday School teacher and W.M.U. Director and a member of the Board of Directors. Before that she had served at Fairview Baptist Church in Watauga, Tennessee as a church clerk, Sunday School teacher, Associational Director and a member of the Adult Choir. Also, she had served as a church clerk, Sunday School teacher, Young Women's Association leader, Youth leader and was a member of the Adult Choir at Biltmore Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memory include her brother, J.D. Arnold and wife Debra, of Elizabethton; her sisters-in-law, Sheila Nidiffer and husband Conley, of Elizabethton and Janice Calloway, of Elk Hart, Indiana, Helen Grindstaff, of Elizabethton; a special nephew, James S. 2680 ELIZABETHTON - Shirley O. Harris, age 78, of Green Valley Lane, Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. Shirley was born in Carter County to the late Luther Oliver, Sr. and Mamie Buckles Oliver. In addition to her parents, Shirley was also preceded in death by her husband, George E. Harris, Jr.; four brothers, Tim Oliver, Bob Oliver, Paul Oliver and Clarence Oliver; and two sisters, Opal Lewis and Mary Lou Taylor; a brother-in-law, Frank D. Harris; a sister-in-law, Shelby J. Wetmore.

Shirley was a woman of strong faith, who loved her family and was always willing to help anyone in need. She was a lifetime member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church. Shirley grew up in the Stoney Creek Community and was a 1962 graduate of Unaka High School. Shirley retired from the FBI after 42 years of service in both Washington DC headquarters and the Atlanta Bureau of the FBI. She had a love of gardening, cooking, reading her bible and especially being with her friends and family. Shirley took great care of her neighbors and grandchildren and exceptional care of her brother, Tim, before his passing. She was very family oriented and loved them fiercely.

Those left to cherish Shirley’s many wonderful memories include her son, David Harris; two brothers, Dewey Oliver and wife Glenda and Luther Oliver, Jr and wife Nancy; a sister, Carolyn Boling; her grandchildren, Mason A. Harris, of the home and Emily A. Harris, of New Mexico; the mother to her grandchildren, Jessica Harris; special nieces, Angie (Kevin) Clark, Donna (Perry) Williams, Teresa Fragale and Wendy Moore; special great nieces, Whitney Clark and Autumn Williams; special great nephews, Devin Clark and Kerry Williams; many other nieces and nephews survive; her close family friends, Paul and Leona Stocker, Everett and Lori Smith, the Dalton family and the Fritts family; her special friends, Chris Fortener and family, Bob and Glenda, of Harlan, Kentucky, Ginger Robinson, Elwayne and Linda Williams, Sheron Bell, Jonnie Wilson, Dottie Thomas, Dean Coon, Linda Harp, Lula Garland, all her neighbors on Green Valley Lane, her church family at Caldwell Springs Baptist Church, and her fellow coworkers over the years from the FBI. Shirley had many friends, if we have forgotten anyone, please forgive us, it was not intentional.

2681 ELIZABETHTON - Shirley Wagner Gentry, age 89, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord and her family on Sunday, December 19, 2021 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton. Shirley was born in Elizabethton to the late Joe and Amy Devenberg Wagner. In addition to her parents, Shirley was also preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Hal Gentry; a sister, Lavonne Slagle; two brothers, Wesley Wandell and Fred “Steve” Wandell; and two grandchildren, Kevin Cochran and Jason Sutphin.
Shirley was a financial technician for Workforce Development, and she was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church since 1965. Shirley would help anyone in need and would be there whenever anyone had a need for help. She had wonderful friends and was a wonderful friend to them in turn. Shirley was a wonderful mother and provider and will be missed terribly. She was a member of the Women of the Moose in Elizabethton and enjoyed reading, making crafts, and traveling all over the United States.
Those left to cherish Shirley’s memory include two daughters, Karen Gentry of Elizabethton and Patricia Wilson and husband Ray of Winston Salem, NC; a son, David Gentry of Texas; her grandchildren, Nathan Gentry of Texas and Forrest Gentry of Elizabethton, Nicholas Marconi and Stephanie Marconi of Winston Salem, NC; six great grandchildren; several nephews and nieces; a granddaughter-in-law, Annette Cochran of Boone, NC; and her special dog, Little Bit.

2682 ELIZABETHTON - Smith Nidiffer, 86, Elizabethton passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2017 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Fusson L. & Anna Lee Adams Nidiffer. He was a graduate of Unaka High School and attended East Tennessee State College. He served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. Smith was a retired, Inventory Clerk with T.V.A... He was a Mason & Shriner. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include his son: Jessie Smith Nidiffer II and wife Carol. Two Step-Grandchildren and five Step Great Grandchildren along with several nieces, nephews & cousins.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Todd Wolfe, Minister officiating. Entombment Service will be conducted at 12 noon Saturday, December 2, 2017 in the Mausoleum of Hope, Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. 2683 ELIZABETHTON - Spencer David Nave, Jr., age 75, of Elizabethton, TN, passed away peacefully under the care of Hospice at Sycamore Shoals Hospital on Wednesday, March 20, 2019, with his devoted wife, Kay, by his side.

Born on February 20th, 1944, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Spencer D. Nave, Jr. was the third child and first son of Spencer David Nave, Sr. and wife, Margaret P. Nave. Serving in the military and desiring to relocate his family to his hometown, Spencer, Sr. moved his young family to Elizabethton, Tennessee. Spencer, Jr. was only four months old at the time of the move; thus, he has always considered himself an Elizabethton native. Spencer took it upon himself to find ways to supplement his family's income. At the age of eight, he took a job as a paperboy delivering the GRIT, followed by employment as a curb hop at Dutch Maid, dishwasher at West Way restaurant, and many other miscellaneous jobs. Spencer's biggest decision was receiving Christ as His Savior at the age of thirteen at the First Baptist Church, Elizabethton.

Before the start of his senior year of high school, Spencer voluntarily signed up with the military. Spencer proudly served in the United States Army from March 1961 to January 1967. He completed basic training at Fort Benning, Georgia. From October 1961 to January 1964, Spencer was stationed at Fulda Gap, Hesse, Germany, serving with the 14th Armored CAV AVN CO. Spencer served in Vietnam from October 1964 to April 1966. Upon his arrival in Vietnam, Spencer was stationed at Tan Son Nhut, serving with the 121st AVN CO. He was also stationed at Bien Hoa, serving with A CO 501st AVN BN (Rattlers), and Vung Tau, serving with the 68th AVN CO. Spencer was a helicopter crew chief. Neutralizing the enemy, rescuing the wounded, and retrieving the dead were just three of his daily duties. Medals awarded include the Soldier's Medal, Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal x 2, Air Medal x 32 with V for Valor in Combat, Army Commendation Medal with V for Valor in Combat, Army Expeditionary Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star for Valor in Combat. Spencer was honorably discharged from the United States Army from Fort Eustis, Virginia, on January 10, 1967. Spencer earned his GED while serving with the military and was awarded his High School diploma from Elizabethton High School after his military service.

Upon completion of his military service, Spencer embarked on his career as an over-the-road truck driver, which spanned 40 years and five million miles. During those years, Spencer was gifted the scenery of this beautiful country and had the opportunity to meet people of all races and cultures. In 2002, Spencer defied the odds by surviving a fiery accident, which destroyed both cab and trailer. Spencer retired from driving in November 2005.

Spencer held veterans' causes close to his heart. He is a life member of the American Legion, VVA (Vietnam Veterans of America), VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), DAV (Disabled American Veterans), and the Rattlers/Firebirds Association. Spencer was also a member of the 40 & 8 Society and Rolling Thunder®, Inc., Tennessee Chapter 4, previously serving on the Board. Spencer served as a registered volunteer at the Veterans Administration, Mountain Home, until health issues determined otherwise. Spencer was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Dashiell Lodge #238, Elizabethton, and Scottish Rite, Knoxville, earning his 50-year pin, January 2019.

Spencer's interests included singing and writing songs, motorcycle riding, gardening, reading, researching his Northern Cheyenne Native American heritage, Civil War history, cane making, westerns, sitting on the porch, horses, fishing, and NASCAR. Spencer's faithful feline companion, Tailgunner, was always by his side. Residing in his grandparents' 1920 home for the last ten years has been a fulfilled dream.

In addition to his parents, Spencer was preceded in death by his youngest brother, Christopher L. Nave (2012), his youngest sister, Cynthia J. Nave (2016), and his oldest sister, Ellen V. "Ginger" Shell (2017). Those left to cherish his memory include his wife - Kay Bohrer Nave; two sons – James Darrell (Karen) Nave, Augusta, Georgia, and Spencer David Nave, III, (Bobbie Gail) Bluff City, TN; four grandchildren – Brianna and Spencer D., IV, Bluff City, TN; James Darrell, Jr. and Juergen "Tom" Nave, Elizabethton, TN.; one great-grandson, Jovi Nave and one great-granddaughter, Sarah-Elizabeth "Grace" Britt; three brothers – Anthony P. "Tony" (Kathy) Nave, Elizabethton, TN, Tom (Sherry) Nave, Gulfport, MS, and Ted (Lynda) Simerly, Maryville, TN; one sister – Margaret Nave Hughes, Johnson City, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor Spencer's life will be held at 7:00 P.M. on Friday, March 29, 2019, at Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Pastor Susan Arnold officiating. Following the honor of life service, Dashiell Lodge #238, F. & A.M. will conduct the Masonic Last Rites service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. on Friday, prior to the service. Rolling Thunder®, Inc., Tennessee Chapter 4 will stand vigil during visitation hours. Internment service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 10:15 A.M. on Saturday with Rolling Thunder®, Inc., Tennessee Chapter 4 leading the procession from the funeral home to the cemetery. Carter County Honor Guard will provide full military honors. 2684 ELIZABETHTON - Steve Dugger, age 60, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord from Duke University on Monday, November 26, 2018, following a courageous battle.


Steve was born in Elizabethton to Walter Clyde Dugger and Norma Ruth Irick Dugger, of Elizabethton.

Steve was a loving husband and father and was a very active member of Valley Forge United Methodist Church. He retired from the Carter County Highway Department, where he had worked on the paving crew. Steve enjoyed participating in Revolutionary War Re-Enactments with the re-enactment group, Company of Over Mountain Men.

Those left to cherish his memory in addition to his parents, include his wife, Ginger Sparger Dugger, of the home; his son, Nathan Dugger, of Elizabethton; his daughter, Bethany Wachterman and husband Jason, of Waynesville, NC; one brother, Glenn Dugger and wife Greta, of Port Orange, FL; one sister, Sherry Ayers and husband Steve, of Johnson City; his niece, Emily Dugger; and four nephews, Ian Dugger, Austin Ayers, Eli Ayers and Kevin Sparger.

2685 ELIZABETHTON - Steven Gene Pierce, 65, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020 at his residence.

A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Billy Gene & Bernice Grace Ensor Pierce. Steven was a 1972 graduate of Unaka High School and 1978 graduate of East Tennessee State University with a degree in Surveying Technology. He was founder & operator of Iron Mountain Surveying for 30 years. He was a retired fireman with the Johnson City Fire Department after 29 years of service. He was an avid musician and outdoorsman. He loved fishing, hunting, playing the guitar and gardening. Steven was a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge # 238 and Carter Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years: Genia Peters Pierce. Two Children: Karen Pierce and special friend, Aaron Taylor, and Emily White & husband Bryan. One Grandson: Isaac White. A Sister: Donna Scofield & husband Don. Five Nieces & nephews: Hope, Jessie, Kate, Will and Zach.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Donald G. Scofield officiating. 2686 ELIZABETHTON - Teresa A. Buckles, 72, Elizabethton passed away on Friday, May 10, 2019 at the Hermitage Health Care Facility, after an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Juanita Elliott Buckles. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Eddie Buckles. She was a Graduate of Unaka High School and attended East Tennessee State University. Teresa was a Medical Administrative Assistant, at the Mountain Home Veteran's Hospital, and retired after over 40 years of service. She was a member of Lynn Valley Baptist Church. Teresa loved to travel with her dear friends and spend time with her family.

Survivors include her niece, Tracy Buckles and nephew, Lance (Sissy) Buckles. She also left behind her sister-in-law, Shirley Buckles. Teresa leaves behind a great nephew, Chris (Morgan) Buckles and a great great niece, Mackenzie Blevins. She will also be greatly missed by her special friends, Ella Carol Peters, Alma Montgomery, and Phyllis Little.

It was Teresa's wish to be cremated and have a private Celebration of her Life by her close family. The family would like to express gratitude to Hermitage Health Care Facility for the excellent care.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Cecil Lacy & Lois Theresa Cole Mottern. He was a 1961 graduate of Elizabethton High School. Terry served in the United States Navy. He was a heavy equipment operator. Terry loved to fish.

2688 ELIZABETHTON - Terry W. Miller, age 79, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, July 21, 2016, from the Franklin Woods Community Hospital.

Terry was born in Carter County to the late Willie and Mary Murray Miller. Terry was a graduate of Elizabethton High School, Class of 1955. He worked as a barber for over 53 years and was a member of Sims Hill Christian Church. Terry was a member and past Master of Hampton Masonic Lodge #750 F & AM and an honorary member of Watauga Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed being with his grandchildren and eating and fellowship with his friends at the old Bus Station and Hardees.

Those left to cherish Terry's memory include his loving and devoted wife of 53 years, Patsy Davenport Miller, of the home; his daughter, April Lloyd and husband Jason, of Elizabethton; two grandchildren - his grandson, Nathanael Lloyd and his granddaughter, Hannah Lloyd, both of Elizabethton. Several cousins also survive.

2689 ELIZABETHTON - Thomas “Dempsey” Shell, Sr., age 85, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 28, 2022 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Dempsey was born in Shell Creek, Tennessee to the late Ernest B. Shell and Delcie Dugger Shell. In addition to his parents, Dempsey was also preceded in death by a sister, Marie Starling; a brother-in-law, Charles W. Snodgrass; and a daughter-in-law, Donna C. Shell.

Dempsey was a loving husband and father and a United States Navy and Marine Corp Reserves veteran- having served as a radar man aboard the USS Noa DD 841. He was a real estate broker and developer for over 40 years and was the owner and operator of Shell Associates Real Estate and Development. Dempsey was instrumental in the development of Quail Hollow and West Links subdivisions. He was a member of the City Council, a life member of BPOE, the JC’s, and a member of the National and State Association of Realtors and NETAR. Dempsey had worked with the American Red Cross and enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting in the West and in Alaska. He loved to read, loved living at Watauga Lake for the past 30 years and loved his German Shepherds, “Shane”.

Those left to cherish Dempsey’s legacy and memory include his wife of 64 years, Linda (Snodgrass) Shell; his son, Dempsey Shell Jr and partner Marti Johnson; his brother, Ladd Shell and wife Tessie and their family; his sister, Judy Lyons and her family; a special friend, Kenny Fortner; a special son, Doug Crockett and the Lohse family in Wyoming.

2690 ELIZABETHTON - Thomas “Tommy” A. Caldwell, age 63 of Elizabethton went home to be with the Lord on Friday October 15, 2021 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Tommy was born in Elizabethton on December 27, 1957 to the late Thomas “Bill” & Wanda Lou Caldwell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Tom Caldwell and wife Madge and Anderson Richardson & wife Katie.
Tommy was an active member of Sunrise Free Will Baptist Church where he enjoyed playing guitar. He was an avid outdoors man and loved hunting, fishing and trapping. He loved woodworking and building, was very artistic and could play many instruments. He was a man of many talents and hobbies. He was a devoted father and grandfather. “Paw” had a very special love for his grandchildren with whom he loved to spend time with and be around.
Those left to cherish his memory are two daughters: Heather (Mike) Fritts and Savanna (David) Cable. His Grandchildren: Dylan, Sophie, Will, Zachary and Easton. Five Sisters: Kathy (David) Gilliam, Joyce Richardson, Maria (Jerome) Ford, Brenda (Merle) Nidiffer and Mary Carrier. 2691 ELIZABETHTON - Trula M. Buckles, age 94, of Elizabethton, Tennessee was embraced by the arms of Christ, while surrounded by her family on Monday, February 24, 2020.

Mrs. Buckles was a life-long resident of Carter County. She was a former cosmetologist and owner and operator of Williams Self Service Market, located in the Hunter Community of Stoney Creek. She was preceded in death by her husband, M/SGT Lawrence L. Buckles, (USMC, Ret.); and her mother, Burnie Williams.

Mrs. Buckles attended Carter Christian Church and loved homemaking.

Mrs. Buckles is survived by her son, Hugh F. Buckles, of Elizabethton; and a very special friend and confidant, Wanda Bowers.

Mrs. Buckles’ body will lie in state on Thursday, February 27, 2020 from 8:30 AM until 4:30 PM at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. A private service will be held at a later date.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Grant Buckles and Eliza Williams Pierce Buckles. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Buckles was a retired Welder; he also loved to farm and work in his garden. He was a member and former deacon of Blue Springs Christian Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter: Shelia Buckles Wilson and several half-brothers & sisters.

2693 ELIZABETHTON - U.G. Cole, age 90, of the Stoney Creek community of Elizabethton, passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

He was a son of the late Albert and Amanda Campbell Cole and was born in Carter County on June 2, 1928. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Cole and Massie Cole; two brothers, Spurgeon Cole and Conley Cole; and two sisters, Myrtle Nidiffer and Juanita Hardin.

U.G. retried after twenty-two years from the Carter County Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church, enjoyed listening to gospel and bluegrass music and loved working around his home.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of sixty-five years, Ethel Linville Cole of the home; four sons, Terry Cole of Elizabethton, Willie Cole and Grant Cole, both of N.C. and Randy Cole and his wife, Theresa of Elizabethton; two daughters, Geneva Lauterbach and Barbara Ann Teston and her husband, Jim, all of N.C.; fourteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral/graveside service to honor the life of U.G. Cole will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at the Garland Cemetery in the Stoney Creek Community of Elizabethton.

2694 ELIZABETHTON - Vada Buckles Moore, age 85, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Monday, April 15, 2019 at the Hillview Health Center of Elizabethton.

Vada was born in Carter County, Tennessee to the late Oscar and Jeannie Massengill Buckles. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Gary Moore; one daughter, Donna Puckett; seven brothers, J.T. Buckles, Jack Buckles, Luther Buckles, Dewey Buckles, Bob Buckles, Thompkin Buckles and Conley Buckles; and one sister, Edna Parlier.

Vada had worked as a seamstress and was of the Baptist faith. She most enjoyed taking care of her husband of 66 years, sewing, cooking and gardening.

Those left to cherish her wonderful memories include her loving husband of 66 years, Carl Moore, of the home; her son, Carl Wayne Moore, of Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Carla Reeser and husband Clinton, of Johnson City, Erica Moore, of Charlotte, NC, Jeannie Puckett, of Elizabethton, and Ashley Anderson (Kelly), of Elizabethton; five great grandchildren, Sydney, Jordan, Madison, Kinsley and Hayden. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Vada Buckles Moore will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 in the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Mark Street, officiating. Music will be provided by Bridget Fletcher. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Wednesday or at the residence at any time.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 AM on Thursday.

2695 ELIZABETHTON - Velva Shoun Nave, age 89, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, November 27, 2016 from the Hermitage Health Care Center. Velva was a native of Carter County and was a daughter of the late Benjamin Dudley Shoun and Emma Belle Tribble Shoun. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell S. Nave; a son, Darrell Nave, Jr.; six brothers, Andy Shoun, Earl Tribble, Jess Shoun, Carl Shoun, Leroy Shoun, and Bill Shoun; and two sisters, Hazel Elliott and Vada Shoun.

Velva was a devoted wife, loving mother and a homemaker. She was a member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church and was a member of the Eastern Star, Pythian Sisters and a member of the White Shrines.

Those left to cherish her memory include three daughters, Janice Showalter, of Johnson City, Janie Breen and husband Thomas, of Johnson City, and Elizabeth Spielberger and husband John, of SC; five grandchildren, Larry G. Maggio, Lynette Hegeman Bunce, Sunshine Nave, Charity Nave and Aaron Weese. Several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Velva Shoun Nave will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Friday, December 2, 2016 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Estel Williams, officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Friday.

2696 ELIZABETHTON - Violet Jean Ritchie Friend, wife of William Friend, age 73, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, with her family and best friend by her side, November 18, 2017 from the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.

Violet was born in Elizabethton to the late Curtis B. Ritchie and Mary Lyons Ritchie. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a husband, David White; one son, Billy Hambric; one brother, J.C. Ritchie; and one sister, Shirley Ashley.

Violet retired as a seamstress at Levi Strauss & Company and attended Grace Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed scrapbooking, making cards, shopping with her daughter and spending time with her granddaughter, grandson and her son.

Those left to cherish her memory include a son, Shane Watson, of Elizabethton; a daughter, Kimberly Hambric Hoefling, of Johnson City; a granddaughter, Allison "A.J." Hoefling; a grandson, Cory Watson; several step grandchildren; two step sons, David Friend and Billy Friend, both of Michigan; and two step daughters, Jenny and Barb Friend, both of Michigan. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Violet Jean Ritchie Friend will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, November 21, 2017 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Curtis Hurt and Rev. Nathan Jennings, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel prior to the service on Tuesday.

2697 ELIZABETHTON - Virginia Allean Hall Hardin, 90, Elizabethton, entered into the presence of the Lord on June 16. 2021. She was born on Christmas Day in 1930 to the late Thaddeus Jonathan (T. J.) Hall and Sarah Annie Sumpter Hall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frankie Hardin; two daughters, Sandra Hardin and Sherry Hardin; two brothers, Harry Hall and Grant Hall; her best friend and sister-in-law, Ella Mae Hardin; a special nephew, C. H. Lewis; and several half brothers and sisters.

Virginia was a homemaker and was employed by several department stores including Kress, Britts, and TG&Y where she was the Manager of the Fabric Department. She was a member of the Unaka Quilting Club where she enjoyed quilting and fellowshipping with the special ladies in the club. She was a very faithful member of Carter Christian Church and loved her church family. She enjoyed participating in several ministries of the church which included the Food Pantry, Summer Sandwich Program for Kids, Senior/Shut-In Meals, and all the Ladies Aide projects. She had also served as the Church Librarian.

She enjoyed sewing, quilting, crafts, and reading. Her favorite joy on earth was fixing holiday meals and Sunday lunches for her family. She loved spending time with them. Her great-grandchildren affectionately nicknamed her “Nannie V”. The memories of her recipes, home remedies, generosity, wisdom, her faith in God and so much more will live in the hearts of her family.

Those left to cherish these memories include a son, Tony (Linda) Hardin; a daughter, Lisa Lowe; three grandsons – Steven (Tanika) Hardin, T. J. (Stephanie) Hardin, and Ben Hardin (Nichole Lawrence); a granddaughter, Kristin (Eric) Shepherd; her great-grandchildren – Lyla, Campbell and Claire Hardin, Veda and Hazel Hardin, and Landon, Levi and Emily Shepherd; special niece, Judy (Larry) Estep; two brothers living in Corning, CA – Ted (Lois) Hall, and Sidney (Joanne) Hall; and a brother-in-law, Lawrence Hardin.

A Service to honor and celebrate the life of Virginia Hall Hardin will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2021 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Daryl W. Cox Minister officiating. 2698 ELIZABETHTON - Virginia Willis, age 96, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Sunday, June 2, 2019 at Signature Health Care of Elizabethton following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late George A. and Alice Hensley Colbaugh. She was a homemaker and she was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church. Virginia loved people and enjoyed talked to her neighbors. She also enjoyed drinking coffee, watching the news and the Atlanta Braves baseball games.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Claude R. Willis; a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Bare; a sister, Freda Buckles and two brothers, Edgar Colbaugh and Calvin Coolidge "Bo" Colbaugh. Those left to cherish her memory include two grandsons, Jerry Kenneth Bare and Daniel Allen Bare and wife Beth, all of Elizabethton; two great-grandchildren, Kendall Bare and Kacie Bare and a sister, Elsie M. Presnell, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Virginia Willis will be conducted at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, June 5, 2019 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Mr. David Siebenaler, minister officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11:00 A.M. – 12:00 Noon on Wednesday prior to the funeral service. 2699 ELIZABETHTON - Virginia “Jean” Crumley McQueen, age 97, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 13, 2021 from the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Virginia was born in Carter County to the late Robert and Ida Campbell Crumley. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 76 years, Ivan Wilson McQueen in 2017; a daughter, Brenda Diane Nave; and her brothers and sisters – she was the last one of the Crumley children.

Virginia was a member of Elizabethton Church of Christ and enjoyed attending the Elizabethton Twin baseball games, gardening and visiting Watauga Lake.

Those left to cherish Virginia’s memory include her son, Glenn “Skip” McQueen of Johnson City; her grandson, Richard Ryan McQueen and wife Helen of Odessa, FL; one great granddaughter, Lilah McQueen; and several nieces, nephews, friends and church family also survive.

A graveside service to honor Virginia’s life will be conducted at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Eddy Craft and Mr. Todd Houston officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
