2601 ELIZABETHTON - Mrs. Rhoda Cates Hyder, 99, 122 Old Stateline Road, Elizabethton, TN, died Thursday, March 30, 2006, at her residence.

A native of Carter County, TN, she was the daughter of the late Allen and Sallie Whitehead Cates.

Mrs. Hyder retired as a teacher from Valley Forge Elementary School. Mrs. Hyder has been a valuable resident of Carter County for her entire life and was still an active member of the church she grew up in, Doe River Baptist Church. She has evinced her deep faith in a variety of important church jobs, as the Training Union Director, as a tireless worker with youth, as Supervisor of the Watauga Lodge of the Watauga Baptist Association, and as Director of the Summer Goodwill Center for the Watauga Baptist Association.

Mrs. Hyder served expertly on the first Tennessee Advisory Council on Aging and was later appointed by Governor Lamar Alexander to the Tennessee Commission on Aging (1981-1990). She belonged to the Roan Mountain Garden Club, the Hampton Garden Club, the ZETA, IOTA Chapter of East Tennessee State University, the Roan Mountain Eastern Star, the Carter County / Elizabethton Senior Citizens, the Elizabethton Woman's Club and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She has also served admirably as President of the Carter County PTA Council and the Valley Forge PTA, was a lifetime member of the Tennessee Parent Teachers Association, served as President of the Carter County Retired Teachers Association and served diligently on the Elizabethton Public Library Board of Directors. In each of these capacities, she has reflected the finest traditions of the Volunteer State.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hyder was preceded in death by her husband, Nat E. Hyder Sr., May 10, 1970; a daughter, June Evelyn Walsh, January 2003; a grandson, Paul Marshall Hyder; a great-grandson, Marine Lance Corp. Nason Michael Hopkins; two sisters, Carrie Street and Pearl Roberts; four brothers, Jim Cates, John Cates, William Cates and Paul Cates; and a special friend, Dr. Harley Fite.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Nat Edens Hyder Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, Johnson City, TN; a daughter, Dr. Lois Gretchen Fortune and her husband, David Lee, Brasilia, Brazil; twelve grandchildren; twenty-nine great- grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Several nieces and nephews and very special friends, Martha Bunton Query, Unicoi, TN, and Nancy Garland, Elizabethton, TN, also survive.

2602 ELIZABETHTON - Mrs. Ruby K. Guinn, age 82, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Thursday, December 19, 2019 in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.

A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late Elick and Bonnie Townsend Birchfield. Ruby was a homemaker and she was a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church. She loved to shop, camp and to spend time with her sisters.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis "LD" Guinn, a grandson, Logan Guinn; three brothers, Worley Birchfield, Jim Birchfield and Cecil Birchfield and a sister, Jean Lund. Those left to cherish her memory include a son, Randy Guinn, Elizabethton; a daughter, Julie Canter and husband Westley, Jonesborough; grandchildren, Stacey Guinn, Austin Guinn, Westley Canter Jr. and Mercedes Canter; several great-grandchildren; three brothers, Steve Birchfield, Elizabethton, L. J. Birchfield, Hampton and Charlie Birchfield, Johnson City and six sisters, Josephine Cagle, Piney Flats, Judy Davenport, Elizabethton, Joyce Richmond, Elizabethton, Kathy Humphreys, Bristol, TN, Shirley Smith, Johnson City and Mary Burleson, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Ruby K. Guinn will be conducted at 4:00 P.M. Sunday, December 22, 2019 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Pastor Jeremy Burleson and Pastor Steve Burleson officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. on Sunday prior to the service or at the residence of her son, Randy Guinn, 287 H. Heaton Road, Elizabethton at other times.

Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Monday, December 23, 2019 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Jack Smith, Mark Davenport, Westley Canter Jr., Cody Jackson, Phillip Canter and Stacey Guinn.

2603 ELIZABETHTON - Mrs. Sallie Price, age 89, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, December 1, 2019 at her residence.

Mrs. Price was born in Mountain City, TN and the daughter of the late James Clyde & Kathleen Cuddy Williams.

She was a member of First Christian Church of Mountain City.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, James Steve & Cindy Price, Jonesborough; daughter and son-in-law, June & Terry Williams, Fort Myers, FL; grandchildren, Melanie Williams and Dane Voss and wife Whitney; great-grandchild, Kenneth Voss; several cousins; and her dog, "Ginger".

2604 ELIZABETHTON - Mrs. Shirley Lowrey, age 82, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, December 19, 2019 at her residence.

Mrs. Lowrey was born in Johnson City and the daughter of the late Hanford & Leota Phillips Dyson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank "Buck" Lowrey and a son, Frank Lowrey.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Elizabethton.

Survivors include nephews, nieces and many friends.

Graveside services will be conducted 10:00 am Saturday, December 21, 2019 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

2605 ELIZABETHTON - Mrs. Stella Marie Hardin Henegar, 81, of Elizabethton, died Friday, Sept. 30, 2016, in the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following an extended illness. Mrs. Henegar was a native and life-long resident of Carter County. She was the daughter of the late J. Smith and Loretta Dugger Hardin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Blaine Henegar, Sr., who was the love of her life, and a grandson, Jonathan Reece, her best pal. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Raymond L. Hardin in 1989; Earl K. Hardin, Sr., in 2015; and Archie D. Hardin in May, 2016.

Mrs. Henegar was a graduate of Hampton High School. Her first job was at the old Anderson Supermarket on E Street during Christmas. She later worked at Eagle's, and for many years at the Tastee Freez, and later at Summers Hardware. She was a charter member of Beck Mountain Baptist Church, but later became a member of Sims Hill Christian Church, where she enjoyed worshiping until she was unable to attend due to her illness. Mrs. Henegar was a big supporter of the Carter County American Cancer Society Relay for Life, being a three time survivor of cancer herself, and in 2008 served as honorary chairperson. She was a homemaker and enjoyed taking care of her family and being a caregiver. She especially enjoyed being with people and talking to them on the telephone. She also enjoyed sitting on the front porch and shopping. Her favorite places to shop were Wal-Mart, Peebles, and the grocery store, because of the many people she met. She was a collector of red birds and bird houses.

Survivors include a daughter, Kathy Reece and her husband, Terry, of Butler; a son and her primary caregiver for the past several years, Blaine "Buddy" Henegar, Jr. and his special friend, Ladonna Williams of Elizabethton; one brother Teddy (Sharon) Hardin of Hampton; five sisters, Helen "Sally" Matherly and Rozella Hardin of Elizabethton, Jane (Wayne) Browder of Gray, who was her caregiver, took her shopping, out to eat, and to the doctor, as well as many other activities; Rebecca Shipley of Blountville, and Elaine Larkins of Elizabethton; a special nephew, Danny Henegar; and a special niece, April Matherly. Several other nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Henegar will be conducted on Monday, October 3, 2016, at 7:30 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Campbell and Rev. Steve Guinn, officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:30 PM on Monday prior to the service, and at her home, or the home of her daughter, at any time.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at 11:00 AM at the Sims Hill Christian Church Cemetery, with Rev. Bryan Smith officiating. Active pallbearers will be Wayne Browder, Teddy Hardin, Danny Henegar, Matthew Hughes, Earl Hardin, Jr., Allen McCoy, and Brian Busler. Honorary pallbearers will be Dale Henegar, Lewis Ward, Larry Shoun, Tom Kyte, Randall Taylor, friends of Terry and Kathy at Fish Springs Baptist Church, and friends at Sims Hill Christian Church. Those wishing to attend are invited to meet the family at the funeral home at 10:15 AM on Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery.

2606 ELIZABETHTON - Mrs. Wilma Ruth Clark Owens, 93, of the Southside Community of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2016 at Hillview Health Center. Mrs. Owens was a daughter of the late Robert N. and Marguerite Young Clark and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Owens, on August 8, 1991; a brother, Paul F. Clark and two sisters, Virginia Gouge and Dorothy Pearson.

Mrs. Owens was a retired school teacher as well as having retired from NARC; she was also a charter member of Southside Christian Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, her church family and because she had a giving and loving spirit, she loved doing for and helping others. She loved to cook and was an accomplished baker, known for her butterscotch, coconut and chocolate pies. She also liked to sew and crochet.

Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Connie Hicks and her husband, Pat; Jonni Simerly and her husband, Dan; all of Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Andrew Hicks, Laura Hardy and her husband, Jason, Julie Simerly, Daniel Simerly; a brother-in-law, Jim Pearson, Elizabethton; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Jean Owens, Bluff City; a sister-in-law, Janie Cain, Gray, and several special nieces and nephews. Her special "family", the members of Southside Christian Church also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Owens will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at the Southside Christian Church, 1610 Southside Road, Elizabethton, with Mr. Michael Koruschak, Minister, and Mr. Paul Knapp, Minister, officiating. The family will receive friends in the church from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Tuesday prior to the service.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Andrew Hicks, Daniel Simerly, Jason Hardy, Aaron Gray, Robert Clark, Dr. Jimmy Pearson, Lee Gouge, David Clark and Bruce Cakebread. Honorary pallbearers will be the Elders and Deacons of Southside Christian Church, her many church friends at Southside Christian Church and Dr. James Shipley and staff. Those wishing to attend are invited to meet the family at the cemetery at 10:50 AM on Wednesday.

2607 ELIZABETHTON - Nancy Taylor Jones was called home on November 8th after a valiant battle with cancer. Nancy was a native of Elizabethton and remained there to raise her family her entire life.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years James Paul Jones Sr, her parents, John R and Irene W Taylor and sister, Roma Jean Taylor.

Nancy was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. She made long life friendships there which she continued to enjoy throughout her life. She spent 34 years working for United Telephone Company in Elizabethton. She was blessed with many friendships through work and to be able to retire at an early age to spend time with family.

Nancy embodied the true meaning of faith, family and love during her life. She attended Big Springs Church of Christ and rarely missed a service until her illness. She loved worshiping and spending time with her church family. She especially loved cooking meals to share during church events. She would also attend other women's bible study groups to further her faith. Nancy adored her family and cherished time either by sharing a meal, taking a girl's shopping trip or just talking. She was always thinking of others and putting their needs first. She demonstrated her servants' heart and love for others by cooking meals, phone calls and visits to friends and family in need.

Survivors include her son, James P Jones Jr (Susie Conner), daughter Angela Harkleroad (Randy), two granddaughters, Haley and Isabella, brother, Robert Taylor and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the special friends and family who blessed her life with calls, cards, food and prayers. You were truly a blessing to her and us. A special thank you to Caris for the wonderful care during this time.

The family will have a celebration of life service at 1 p.m. Monday, November 11, 2019 at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. David Tysinger and Mr. Glen Layfield Ministers officiating. The Eulogy will be given by Randy Harkleroad and Clyde Carter. Graveside services will immediately follow the ceremony at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers will be: Randy Harkleroad, Jimmy Taylor, Lynn Taylor, Bill Taylor, Glen Shaw and Ronnie Wampler. 2608 ELIZABETHTON - Naomi Edna Williams Richardson, 82, Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord Tuesday, December 20, 2022 in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Willie & Arthie Cora Dinsmore Williams. She was retired from Southeastern Apparel. In earlier years she had attended North Street Church of Jesus Christ and also New Hope Church of Jesus. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Carl Richardson., a son: Curtis Richardson, two sisters: Verdie Mae Pierce and Christine Blevins and three brothers: Alfred, Wesley and Lester Williams.

Survivors include her son: Rickey C. Richardson of the home. One Brother: Kenneth Williams, a Brother-In-law; Elbert Richardson. Also, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, December 23, 2022 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. R.L. Poole officiating. Interment will follow in the Pearl Bowers Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

2609 ELIZABETHTON - Nellena "Nell" Jenkins McQueen, 93, of Elizabethton, passed away on Friday, September 2, 2016, peacefully at her home surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by her dear sister, Babe Ruth Jenkins Williams of Newnan, GA. Aunt Nell will be missed by her nieces and nephews: Larry Timbs, Jr., Marcella Rowe, Cheryl Timbs, Edward Timbs, Sharon Ruth Woodard, Teresa Davis, Shelley Irwin and Jay Wilkinson as well as several great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-two years, Jack C. McQueen, her brother and sister, J. N. Jenkins and Dixie Nadine Jenkins Timbs and her parents, Ed and Maude Jenkins.

Mrs. McQueen, who loved to solve crossword puzzles and sit on her porch, graduated from Hampton High School and completed secretarial training at Steed College in Elizabethton. She worked until retirement as a secretary. She liked to watch old westerns on TV and enjoyed visits from her family and friends. Nell was a life-long member of Valley Forge Christian Church where she taught Sunday school for over twenty years and was active in the Ladies Council. She leaves behind many loving church family friends who cared about her and visited often.

Nell's home was always open to family and friends. Her trust in the Lord, her humor and calming presence remains a gift to all who knew her. She will always be remembered for her pleasure of laughter, appreciation of good food, a cup of hot coffee and her love of great conversation. Her family finds comfort in knowing she is at rest with the Lord and her lifetime companion, her husband, Jack.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, from 1:00 – 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton.

A Committal and Entombment service for Mrs. McQueen will follow the visitation on Tuesday, at 2:30 PM in the Mausoleum of Hope at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. David Siebenaler, Minister, officiating. Music will be by Alex Holtsclaw and Freida Winters. 2610 ELIZABETHTON - Nola Barnette Sams, 91, Elizabethton, passed from this life unexpectedly on Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Johnson City Medical Center. Born March 17, 1929 in Johnson City, TN. to the late George and Wilma Adams Barnette, she married the love of her life, Fred Sams, Jr. in 1949 and lived in Elizabethton since that time. Fred preceded her in death in 1983 and she lived independently until the day of her death. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Pansy Brown, and a half-brother, Lawrence Honeycutt.

Survivors include a daughter, Dathia Reynolds and son-in-law: Scott. Sisters include: LaVerne Gouge, Elizabethton, Selma Vicars, Johnson City and a brother, Ralph Barnette, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive and a special brother-in-law: Robert Sams.

In addition to being an immaculate homemaker, she had worked as a substitute teacher, daycare worker and hostess at Chick-Fil-A.

Nola was the oldest active member of Borderview Christian Church where she was a member of the Adult Choir for over 60 years, taught Sunday School, VBS, Nursery leader, fellowship team, beautification team, Secret Sisters, and a life-long member of the Kum-Join US Sunday School Class.

No visitation is planned per her wishes and a graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, March 14, 2021 at Colbaugh Cemetery with Mr. Scott Fisher, Minister officiating. The eulogy will be given by her son-in-law: Scott Reynolds. Pallbearers will be Elders and Deacons of Borderview Christian Church. Honorary Pallbearers will be her church family.

2611 ELIZABETHTON - Norma Jean Powell Stines, 88, Elizabethton, passed away Monday, May 16, 2022, in the Signature Health Center. She was born May 26, 1933, in Roan Mountain to the late Stuart & Lou Hill Powell. She was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. Norma was a retired employee of the United Telephone Company. She loved to sew. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband David H. Stines who passed away May 25, 2021. by a son: Todd Stines, two sisters and five brothers.

Survivors include a son & daughter-in-law: Robert & Crystal Stines, Elizabethton. A Granddaughter: Brittany Stines Phillips and husband Daniel, a grandson: Axel Stines, Elizabethton, A Great Grandson: Todd Phillips. Several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Friday, May 20, 2022, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Nathan Jennings officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 22, 2022, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Alecia Holder. Active Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

2612 ELIZABETHTON - Norman E. Gouge, age 77, of Elizabethton, entered into the hands of the Almighty on Thursday, September 21, 2017 from the Johnson City Medical Center.

Norman was born in Carter County to the late Howard E. and Opal Grindstaff Gouge.

Norman retired from Raytheon in Bristol and also retired from the Tennessee Army National Guard. He was also a United States Air Force veteran where he was active in the U2 Program and had served in the Vietnam Era. Norman was a member of the Elks Lodge and the Captain Lynn F. Folsom VFW Post 2166. He enjoyed life and being with his friends and family.

Those left to cherish his memory include four sons, Bryon Gouge and wife Pamela, of Elizabethton, Gary Gouge and wife Candy, of Granite Falls, NC, Clifford Gouge and wife Linda, of Johnson City, and Michael Gouge; eight grandchildren; several great grandchildren; a sister, Sharon Compton and husband Harry, of Charlottesville, VA; a brother, Bill Gouge and wife Donna, of Mt. Holly, NC. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Norman E. Gouge will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Monday, September 25, 2017 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Eric Wright, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Monday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

2613 ELIZABETHTON - Novella C. Heaton, age 82, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Hermitage Health Care Center following an extended illness.

She was a daughter of the late Maynard and Carma Williams Collins. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Command Sgt. Major Samuel Heaton, Jr. U.S. Army Retired, two sisters, Burnia Pierce and Myrtle Gilliam and three brothers, Authur Collins, Willard "Billy" Collins and Earl R. Collins.

Novella retired as an aide from Unaka Elementary School. She was a spunky military wife and a wonderful Christian mother and grandmother. She was a member of Nidiffer Chapel Free Will Baptist Church where she sang in the quartet. Novella enjoyed sewing and making quilts and spending time with her family. She was known for treating people well and with respect.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 PM prior to the funeral service in the chapel.

2614 ELIZABETHTON - Ola Hicks, age 92, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 14, 2021 from Princeton Transitional Care in Johnson City. Ola was born in Carter County to the late Dave and Minnie Hamby Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Carl Hicks; six sisters; and three brothers.

Ola had worked at North American Rayon Corporation and later at Dino’s Restaurant. She was a member of Doe River Baptist Church for over 65 years. Ola loved to cook and always had a dessert or other items cooked at all times in case a guest were to drop by. Anyone that stopped by seldom left without eating. She also enjoyed reading her Bible and the newspaper.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Kathy Hicks, of the home; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews as well as a special nephew, Kenny Jones and his family also survive.

A graveside service to celebrate Ola’s life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Kent Hyder, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Joey Cole. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

2615 ELIZABETHTON - Olan Eugene "Pie" Hardin, 74, Elizabethton went home to be with the Lord Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital after a battle with Amyloidosis.

Born April 27, 1944 in Elizabethton to the late Auda & Viola Peters Hardin. He was a 1962 graduate of Unaka High School. Pie was employed at North American Rayon Corporation for several years and retired from Texas Instruments. He was a member of the Good Neighbor Quartet, The Thursday Night Boys and second generation Hardin Brothers Quartet.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Alma "Bo" Williams and two brothers, Charles & Dana Ray Hardin. He was an avid Tennessee Vol Fan.

Survivors include his wife of 53 years who cared for him Karen Taylor Hardin. One Daughter & Son-In-Law: Audra Brooke & Daryl Shanks, two sons & daughters-in-law: Wade & Sarah Hardin and Shane & Laura Hardin and the light of his life his grandchildren: Taylor Shanks, Kassidy Hall and Cooper Shanks. Two Sisters: Georgia Ellis and Vera Smith & husband Mack, Two Brothers & Sisters-in-Law: David "Doug" & Danette Hardin and Donald "Don" & Carol Hardin. Several nieces & nephews.

2616 ELIZABETHTON - Olivee Swanner Miller, 78, Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, November 24, 2018 in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Thomas & Mary Swanner. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Miller was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: John Miller, her sisters: Emogene Morton, Magalene Tolley, Ina B. Myers, and Ethel Peters, and a brother: Leonard Swanner.

Survivors include several nieces & nephews and her Ivy Hall family.

2617 ELIZABETHTON - On Friday, June 22, 2018, our loving, devoted father and papaw, Charles Edward Henson, age 75, of Elizabethton, went home to be meet his Lord and Savior from the Johnson City Medical Center with his family by his side, following a brief illness. Charles was born in Elizabethton to the late John and Ira Vines Henson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife and love of his life, Peggy Trivette Henson in 2009; a brother, Harrell Henson; and a sister, Geraldine Henson Stewart.

Charles retired from the twisting unit at North American Rayon Corporation and was a member of Piney Grove Church of Christ in the Poga Community of Butler, but attended First Christian Church of Elizabethton. Charles was affectionately known as the "lawn mower man" and was renowned for his ability to repair small engine machinery. He enjoyed browsing at the flea market and traveling, but his greatest joy was his family. Charles was, before anything, a devoted family man.

2618 ELIZABETHTON - On Monday, December 23, 2019, Lola Bowers, age 84, of Elizabethton, Tennessee entered home to be with her Lord and Savior.

Lola was born on March 8, 1935 to the late Maynard and Carma Collins. She spent most of her career working at Citizen's Bank where she met and became friends with many in the community. She was a devoted member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church and loved her church family very much. Lola was married to the late John F. Bowers. They spent their lives together making wonderful memories by traveling the country, camping and taking care of each other.

Many that knew Lola affectionately called her "Dodo". She was a caring and fun loving sister, aunt and friend. Dodo wanted those around her to love Jesus Christ, be happy and live life to the fullest.

Lola was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her sisters, Burna Pierce, Myrtle Gilliam and Novella Heaton; and her brothers, Earl Collins, Arthur Collins and Willard Collins.

She is survived by her sister, Betty Edwards; two brothers, Bob Collins and Luther Collins; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Sue and Lloyd Lowe and brother-in-law, Ken Gilliam.

A service to celebrate the life of Lola Bowers will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Saturday, December 28, 2019 in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Reverend Doug Hinshaw, officiating. 2619 ELIZABETHTON - On the morning of Thursday, September 2, 2021, Phyllis Angelina White, age 78, of Elizabethton, TN passed away at Life Care Center of Elizabethton. Phyllis was born on October 10th, 1943 to Roy and Gladys McCourry in Unicoi County, TN. Phyllis met and fell in love with Gary M. White and the couple married in 1962. The couple enjoyed traveling across the globe in service of the United States Navy. Their oldest son, Gary Jr. was born while they were deployed in Spain and their youngest son, Shannon Eugene came into the world during their deployment to Norfolk, Virginia. The White’s lived many years in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Charleston, SC, Ayden, NC, Miami, FL and finally returning home to East Tennessee. Phyllis was dedicated to family and avidly researched their family trees. Phyllis had a big heart and loved animals. She enjoyed working in vet clinics and caring for many strays.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Gary, of the home; two sons, Gary Grindstaff and wife Evans and Shannon and Grindstaff and wife Ailyn and four loving grandchildren, Rhodes White, Tristan White, Rhodes August White and Angel White.

2620 ELIZABETHTON - On Thursday, December 28, 2017 an old soldier, Ivan W. McQueen, age 95, of Elizabethton went home to be with his Lord at his residence.

Ivan was born in Carter County to the late Lee H. and Deborah Smith McQueen. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Diane Nave; his brothers, Harry, J.D., Shirley, Kenneth, Charles and F.M. McQueen; and his sisters, Bea M. Elliott, Sue M. Lady and Margie McQueen Townsend Lyons.

Ivan retired from North American Rayon Corporation, after 52 years of service. He was a United States Army veteran, having served as a Sergeant in World War II, in the 104th Infantry Division, Timberwolves. Ivan was a member of Elizabethton Church of Christ, where he had served as a secretary and treasurer. He enjoyed sports, baseball, the Elizabethton Twins- and he attended almost all of the Twins games. He also enjoyed visiting Watauga Lake and gardening.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 76 years, Virginia (Jean) McQueen, of the home; a son, Glenn McQueen, of Elizabethton; a grandson, Richard R. McQueen and wife Helen, of Tampa, FL; a great granddaughter, Lilah M. McQueen; a brother, George McQueen, of Elizabethton; several nieces, nephews and his special friends, Justin Bowers and Austin Murray, also survive.

A service to celebrate and honor the life of Ivan W. McQueen will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Sunday, December 31, 2017 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Roby Ellis, minister and Mr. Eddie Craft, minister, officiating. 2621 ELIZABETHTON - Opal Benfield Street, age, 91, of Elizabethton, left her earthly home on June 27, 2018 to join her heavenly family and her savior, Jesus Christ, following an extended illness.

Opal was born in Carter County to the late Amos and Mary Benfield. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Kyle Street; and her sisters, Margaret, Evelyn, Wilma and Jean.

For many years, she and her husband owned a general store in Limestone Cove. Street's Store became a community meeting place where friendships were made and remain today. Her kindness and generosity will be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews, to whom she provided love, laughter and support. A true "fairy godmother!" She was a life-long member of Valley Forge Christian Church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school.

2622 ELIZABETHTON - Orville Grindstaff, age 97, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 from the Ivy Hall Nursing Home in Elizabethton.

Orville was born in Wise County, Virginia to the late Vaught and Lina White Grindstaff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Nancy Campbell; two sisters, Bernice Grindstaff and Nadine Fisher; and two brothers, Ernest Grindstaff and Bert Grindstaff.

Orville was a loving husband and father and retired from North American Rayon Company after 46 years of service. He was a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II. Orville was a member of Watauga Valley Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for 40 years and as the church treasurer for 44 years. He was one of the first members of the Golden Group, formed by the church. Orville also loved farming.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted wife of 75 years, Eula Grindstaff, of the home; two sons, Larry Grindstaff and wife Leatha, of Elizabethton and Lynn Grindstaff and wife Tina, also of Elizabethton; his grandchildren, Todd Grindstaff, Trampus Grindstaff, Heather Grindstaff, and Terry Campbell; one brother, J.D. 2623 ELIZABETHTON - Oscar Cale Garrison, 87, 115 Meredith Drive, Elizabethton, died at his residence Wednesday morning, May 10, 2006.

A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Cling and Bessie Headrick Garrison. Mr. Garrison was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church and a former Elder for forty years.

Mr. Garrison was retired from Univac. He was a Air Force Veteran of World War II, an avid fisherman and loved to work in his garden. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

Survivors include his wife of fifty six years, Pauline Oliver Garrison; Several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, May 11, 2006, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Clay Bailey and Mr. Jason Birchfield officiating. 2624 ELIZABETHTON - Pastor Harold Mains 82, of Elizabethton TN., went to be with the Lord after a long fight with prostate cancer on Monday, February 8, 2021 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was the son of the late Glen Mains and Virginia Perkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Younce, Grandmother Callie Mains, brother Henry Mains, and Ron Perkins.

Reverend Mains was a pastor for sixty years. He was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and Northeastern Bible College in Essex Falls, New jersey where he served as Dean of Men and Athletic Director. Pastor Mains served as a missionary to the Children’s Bible Mission before pastoring several churches in NC., SC., TN., which included, Faulks Baptist, Cooley Springs Baptist, Lee Park Baptist, Centerville Baptist, Fairview Baptist, Big Springs Baptist, Philadelphia, and Crosspointe Fellowship.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of sixty years, Anita Gandin Mains; one son, Michael Mains, and wife Lisa; two granddaughters, Kelsey Allred, and husband Kyle, Molly Vickery and husband Chase, and soon to be great granddaughter, Kallie Elizabeth Allred; one sister, Barbara Bunton, several nieces and nephews.

Pastor Mains served twenty years as the President of the Elizabethton Twins. Through the years he served as chaplain for numerous teams including, the Elizabethton Twins, Science Hill basketball team, Providence Academy baseball team, several teams at Elizabethton and Chesnee High Schools. He also served as Chaplain for the Elizabethton Police Department and Lifecare in Elizabethton. Pastor Mains was inducted into the 2020 Appalachian League and the Carter County Sports Hall of Fames. He also served as a coach for numerous youth baseball and softball teams and was honored by Northeastern Bible College who annually presents their top athlete a scholarship award in his name.

In her work at First Baptist Church, she took special pride in active participation in the ‘Messengers’ Sunday School class and the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Additionally, Patricia served the Carter County community for 25 years delivering meals on wheels to those in need.

2627 ELIZABETHTON - Patricia Ann Dockery, age 80, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at her residence. She was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, a daughter of the late James F. Godsey, Sr. and Nancy Loudy Godsey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Joe Godsey; and one sister, Teresa Godsey.

Patricia attended Johnson City Baptist Temple. She received woman of the year at the Boys Club back in the 70s. She worked in childcare work having served in emergency shelters for 12 years. She also worked as a Criminal Court Reporter for Unicoi, Washington, Carter and Johnson County Courts. She loved baseball and watching the Atlanta Braves.

She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Kyle “Doc” Dockery; one son, Michael Dockery; one daughter, Candy Roscoe; four grandchildren, Colby Jones and wife Stacy, Jeremy Wardle, Alicia Dockery, and Tressie Dockery; twelve great-grandchildren, Sophia, Kaleb, Mikalya, Gavin, Johnanna, Ryleigh, Cameron, Dakota, Everly, Emersyn, Isabelle, and Scarlett; one brother, Bryon Keith Godsey; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Born January 3, 1949 at home on Stoney Creek to the late William Earl and Pauline Shoun Graham. She was preceded in death by her Maternal Grandparents: Hattie Ward Shoun and TN. "Poly" Shoun, her paternal Grandparents: Dennie Rae Swift Graham Taylor and Theodore Roosevelt Graham of West Virginia. She was also preceded in death by her brothers: Lynn Edward Graham and Ronald Earl Graham, many aunts, uncles and cousins. Pat was a 1966 graduate of Unaka High School. She was a member of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church. She was also a member of Buladeen Citizens Club where she had served as Secretary-Treasurer. Survivors include her son: W. Shane "Sugar Bear" Lowe and his wife Crystal, Her Grandson: Dylan Shane Lowe, he granddaughter: Elizabeth Nicole Lowe. Her Sisters: Brenda Graham Davis and husband Ernie, Kaye D. 2629 ELIZABETHTON - Patricia Treadway, of Elizabethton, passed away at the age of 84 on March 2, 2018, at Signature Health Care of Elizabethton, TN. A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late Allen Floyd and Lena Allen Taylor. She was proceeded in death by her first love and husband, Joseph Randolph "Joe" Treadway.

Mrs. Treadway graduated from East Tennessee State University with a degree in Library Science. She was school librarian and yearbook sponsor at Happy Valley High School for many years. A devoted educator, she shared her lifetime love of books and passion for research with her students. Her gentle spirit and kind heart touched the lives of many over the years.

She was a long-standing and dedicated member of the First Christian Church of Elizabethton, where she served in many capacities, including librarian.

She was an active member of the community, volunteering for ARM, serving on their board of directors, and The Daughters of the American Revolution. With unmatched grace, a strong and generous heart, and a zest for life, she truly cared for all. An avid gardener, Pat spent countless hours working in her yard tending to her flowers and had a special fondness for hydrangeas.

Her greatest love was her family.

Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law: Patti Anne Treadway of Elizabethton and Meredith and Tracy Trott of Murfreesboro, TN, one granddaughter Laura Meredith Trott of Atlanta, GA, one grandson Joseph "Joey" Trott of Knoxville, TN, and two sisters and brothers-in-law: Kathy and Wayne Riley of Baldwin, GA and Dottie and Jim Riley of Woodstock, GA and many special nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Patricia Ann "Pat" Treadway will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Monday, March 5, 2018 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Michael Klaus, minister, officiating. 2630 ELIZABETHTON - Patsy Mathis Dykes, age 76, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, June 24, 2021 at Ivy Hall Nursing Home, following an extended illness. Patsy was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Howard Jessie Mathis and Gladys Marie Guess Mathis. In addition to her parents, Patsy was also preceded in death by two brothers, Roger Mathis and Billy Mathis.

Patsy had worked for Ivy Hall Nursing Home for ten years as a cook. She was of the Baptist faith and she enjoyed watching old television shows such as Gunsmoke and the Golden Girls and most of all she loved taking care of her family.

Those left to cherish Patsy’s many memories include her husband of forty nine years, Richard Dykes, of the home; a son, Christopher Dykes and wife Heather, of Elizabethton; a granddaughter, Paiyton Dykes, of Elizabethton; two brothers, Mickey Mathis and wife Deborah, of Elizabethton and Barry Mathis and wife Kay, also of Elizabethton; two sisters, Brenda Bare and husband Glen, of Elizabethton and Penny Fenner and husband Billy, also of Elizabethton; and a sister-in-law, Sue Mathis, of Elizabethton. 2631 ELIZABETHTON - Patsy Nave-Hubbard, age 61, of Elizabethton, TN went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at her residence following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late James A. and Lula McKinney Nave. Patsy had been a sales associate at the Walmart, Elizabethton for forty-one and ½ years. She was a member of Zion Baptist Church in the Gap Creek Community. She loved to play the piano; was an avid photographer and enjoyed gardening. Patsy loved her pets and especially loved her family and visiting with people.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Ken Franklin. 2632 ELIZABETHTON - Patti Anne Treadway, of Elizabethton, passed away at the age of 69, on July 8, 2022, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home in Elizabethton, TN. A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Randolph "Joe" and Patricia Taylor "Pat" Treadway. Patti earned her bachelor’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1975 with a major in Interior Design and her Master of Arts degree in Teaching from East Tennessee State University in 1980.

Patti devoted her life to nurturing and educating children and encouraging others. She taught

Kindergarten and Head Start at Happy Valley Elementary for 35 years. She loved her students and worked tirelessly to provide each child with an environment that was both educational and inspirational, allowing them to grow academically, express themselves artistically, and experience moments of unbridled joy. Her mantra was to allow each child to have their best day, every day.

Those who surrounded Patti knew her kindness, warmth, rich expertise, and collaborative spirit. Her focus was always outward as she lifted and included all others around her. Her legacy will live on through the lives of those she taught, mentored, loved, and inspired.

Patti was known for her creativity and artistic talent. She loved to create and teach scrapbooking, and she made beautiful scrapbooks for her family and friends. She also assisted her family and friends with numerous home interior and design projects. She had an uncanny ability to see color and better utilize space in any room or design project. She was a lifelong reader, loved to discuss plot components, and wrote beautiful short stories.

Patti was the prepared member of her family. Her Christmas presents were perfectly wrapped, and her trunk included enough raingear and snacks to get her family through any situation in Neyland stadium because she knew they never remembered to bring anything. To be loved by Patti was to be paid attention to in detail. She was the best storyteller in the family. A second mother to her niece and nephew, and a beloved sister. She will be missed beyond measure.

She was a member of First Christian Church of Elizabethton, where she had taught Sunday School and served as a youth sponsor.

Those left to cherish her memory include her sister, Meredith Trott, and husband Tracy, of Elizabethton; niece, Laura Trott and husband Jason Yoo, of Atlanta, Georgia; nephew, Joey Trott of Knoxville; beloved aunts and uncles, Kathy and Wayne Riley of Baldwin, Georgia, and Dottie and Jim Riley of Woodstock, Georgia; special friend, Leonard Febuary; best friends, June and Roger Shepherd all of Elizabethton; numerous cherished cousins and friends; and Jasper her devoted Bichon Havanese.

2633 ELIZABETHTON - Patye Church Heaton, age 64, of Elizabethton, Tennessee was called home on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 from the Johnson City Medical Center. Patye was born in Carter County to the late Gordie and Christine Birchfield Church.

Patye had a long career in nursing, first working in Sycamore Shoals Birthing Center for 10 years, then Johnson City OBGYN, Medial Care of Elizabethton and retired from the Carter County Health Department. She was a lifelong member of Valley Forge Christian Church. Patye enjoyed reading, family time, beach trips and woodworking.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 36 years, Greg Heaton, of the home; six children: Jaime Norris, Stephen Heaton (Christina), Jan Setlock (Duane), Kristen Heaton (Chris Johnson), Gregory Sethpatrick Heaton, all of Elizabethton and Megan Heaton, of Jonesborough; fourteen grandchildren: Noah Norris, Joel Doebbler, Toby Heaton, Julie West, Becky Heaton, Madison Setlock, Bella Setlock, Olivia Setlock, Grant Setlock, Rilye Johnson, Charlotte Johnson, Emma Johnson, Perseus York and Titus York; one great grandhchild, Liam West; one sister, Teresa West, of Elizabethton; and two brothers, Chris Church and Don Church, both of Elizabethton. 2634 ELIZABETHTON - Paul Edward Sellers, 87, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, December 27, 2018 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital after an extended illness. He was a Carter County native.

Paul was a 1949 graduate of Elizabethton High School where he was an outstanding Cyclone Basketball Player. He was retired from The Raytheon Corporation, Bristol. Paul was an avid Golfer. He had served on the Board at the Elizabethton Golf Course for a number of years. He was preceded in death by his wife: Charlotte Sellers, his mother: Flossie Hardin Shew, his daughter: Debra Taylor, a son: David Sellers and a brother: Bill Sellers.

Survivors include his Grandchildren: Jason Paul Taylor & wife Carrie, Dillon Sellers and fiancé Brittany Lawson and Briana Stout & fiancé Zac Cornely all of Elizabethton and four great grandchildren: Michael, Tucker, Waylon & Elaina.

2635 ELIZABETHTON - Paul Pierce, age 88, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at Signature Health and Rehab in Elizabethton. Paul was born in Elizabethton to the late Martin Pierce, Sr and Shinola (Buckles) Pierce. In addition to his parents, Paul was also preceded in death by four brothers and sisters: Clarence Pierce, Reece Pierce, Callie Pierce and Aline Pierce.

Paul loved to be around people- laughing and chatting with anyone that would pass the time with him. A proud United States Army veteran, Paul had owned and operated his own business- Paul’s Handle Shop. Paul had also worked at Western Auto in Elizabethton for 25 years, as a courier at Carter County Bank, at White’s Grocery, and at Barnes Boring Hardware. Paul loved working on tools and in any kind of wood products. He was a loyal and faithful member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church and had also attended Watauga Valley Church and had served as a trustee there. Paul was also a member of the cemetery association at Wilson Cemetery in Stoney Creek.

Those left to cherish and remember Paul’s many wonderful memories include his wife of 62 wonderful years, Geraldine Pierce of the home and his daughter, Jennifer Harmon and son-in-law, Keith and his grandson, the apple of his eye, Colin Harmon; a brother, Martin Pierce, Jr. Several nieces, nephews, church family and extended family also survive.

She was born in Johnson City, Tennessee to the late Tom Carriger and Pearl Collins Carriger. In addition to her parents, Peggy was preceded in death by her brother, Tom “Mac” McDonald Carriger and wife Cathryn, longtime partner and the love of her life Alan Lee Hubatka, Nephew Tom F. Carriger, a niece Marilyn Carriger and a special cousin as well as close friend Peggy Sue Carriger.
Peggy was of the Baptist faith and attended First Baptist Church in Elizabethton. She loved her family and enjoyed traveling and entertaining. Peggy was always on the go and loved life.

2637 ELIZABETHTON - Peggy L. Guinn Whitehead, age 75, of Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2018, at her home.

She was born in Johnson County and was a daughter of the late George and Roxie Bunton Guinn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Keller and two brothers, Bobby J. Guinn and Dean Guinn.

Mrs. Whitehead was a member of Sims Hill Christian Church and attended Beck Mountain Baptist Church. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who cherished her family as they did her. She will be greatly missed.

She was the daughter of the late Herman and Christine Scalf Hill and was born in Telford, TN on May 30, 1951. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Debbie Norris and her brother, Terry Hill. Phyllis was a retired CNT and enjoyed taking care of others. She loved animals, working in her flowers and going to yard sales.

Phyllis was born in Butler, Tennessee to the late Jady and Faye Robinson Fritts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Bobby Joe Davenport; two brothers, Malcolm Fritts and Kenneth Fritts; and a daughter, Kathy Davenport.

Phyllis was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who will be missed tremendously by all who knew her. She was a member of Willow Springs Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening.

2642 ELIZABETHTON - Phyllis W. Lovette, age 81, of Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

She was born in Carter County and was a daughter of the late Maude (VanHuss) and Benjamin Harrison Williams. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Lovette, Sr., a brother, Dr. Ben Williams, and three sisters, Christine W. Justis, Elizabeth W. Love and Beatrice W. Alexander.

Mrs. Lovette was a graduate of Elizabethton High School, class of 1954 and a 1961 graduate of East Tennessee State College (ETSU) where she chose music as both her major and her minor. Music was her life and because of her love of music she spent her career teaching others. She taught music at Cloudland High School, Harold McCormick Elementary School and West Hills Elementary School in Knoxville. She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church where she served in many capacities over the years, including as the director of the Chancel Choir for sixteen years and as the director of the Handbell Choir. She was a member of the United Methodist Women and served as President of that organization and a member of the Elizabethton Women's Civic Club where she also served as President. She loved to collect antiques.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Richard H. Lovette, Jr. (Jennine), of Johnson City; a grandson, Caleb Lovette, of Johnson City and several nieces and nephews.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Lovette will be conducted on Sunday, July 29, 2018, at 2:00 PM in the First United Methodist Church, Elizabethton with Rev. Raymond. W. Amos, Sr. and Rev. Buford Hankins officiating. Music will be under the direction the Chancel Choir of First United Methodist Church and Mr. David Arney, organist. The family will receive friends in the church sanctuary from 12:30 – 2:00 PM on Sunday or at her home, 214 West F Street at other times.

2643 ELIZABETHTON - Powell L. Wilson, age 79, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January, 18 2020 from Life Care Center of Elizabethton.

Powell was born in Shell Creek to the late Jack Wilson, Sr. and Joda Johnson Wilson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cynthia Wenzel Wilson; sister, Celest Day (Roy); three brothers, Doyle (Janet), Verl (Meria), and Jack Jr.

Powell graduated from Johnson County High School in 1960 and later attended East Tennessee State University. He retired from Great Lakes Research after thirty years of service. He was an active member of Hunter First Baptist church where he had taught children’s church with his wife for twenty-five years.

Those left to cherish his memory include two sisters-in-law, Juanita Wilson and Glenna Hardin (Rick); nieces and nephews, Marie Adevoso, Kathy Barrera (Anaya), Michael Wilson, Danny Wilson (Jennifer), Karen Davis (Danny), and Tanya Wilson; great-nieces, Abbie and Leah; great nephews, Brandon, Nick, Lukas, Wyeth, Alec, Eli, and Ryan. Both Powell and Cynthia considered all of their great-nieces and great- nephews as their “grandchildren”. A special cousin, Janet Johnson and a dear friend, Marilyn Kimes also survive.

A service to honor the life of Powell L. Wilson will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Steven Nauman, Jr. officiating. 2644 ELIZABETHTON - Ralph Gouge, age 92, of Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital, following an extended illness.

Ralph was born in Carter County, Tennessee to the late Frank Leslie Gouge and Lena Rainbolt Gouge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Orlena Vines Gouge; and his special friend, Rose Hodge; three sisters, Novella Williams, Helen Carrier, and Vivian Elliott; three brothers, Howard Gouge, Fred Gouge, and Strail Gouge; and one grandson, Charles G. Pierce.

Ralph was a World War II Army veteran and was a former member of Hunter First Baptist Church. He retired as a machinist at UNIVAC and was a member of the Senior Dance Group. He enjoyed dancing, was an avid fisherman, gardening, but most of all he loved children – he was "Daddy" and "Papaw" to many.

Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Gary Pierce of Bristol, TN and Susan and John Estep of Elizabethton; four grandchildren, James Pierce of Johnson City, Wendy Hill and husband Spencer of Knoxville, Andrew Estep and fiancé Abi of Johnson City, and Justin Estep and fiancé Julie of Elizabethton; eight great-grandchildren, Hally and Spencer Hill, Colton, Carter, Chloe and Callie Otto, and Rhyleigh and Trey Whitson; two adopted sons, James Timbs and Gary Timbs both of Elizabethton; one sister, Barbara Berry of Elizabethton; one brother-in-law and wife, Edward G. and Marge Vines of Hyattsville, Maryland and a special cousin, Kyle and Phyliss Gouge of Johnson City. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Ralph Gouge will be conducted at 7:30 PM on Thursday, August 10, 2017 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Rusty Verran, officiating. A eulogy will be provided by Dr. Ted Taylor. The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM until 7:30 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday, or at the residence at any time.

2645 ELIZABETHTON - Ralph H. Troutman, age 81, of Elizabethton, TN, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2016, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

Mr. Troutman was born in Carter County, TN, and was the son of the late Hezekiah and Deliah Heaton Troutman. He was also preceded in death by a son, Danny Troutman; three brothers, Guy, Roy and Jess Troutman and one sister, Edith Street. He worked at Sperrys Univac for 25 years and retired from Smith-Cline. He was a member of the Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church, was a veteran of the United States Army and was also a member of the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge #566. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, his grandchildren were the love of his life.

Those left to cherish his memory include, his wife Billie Blackwell Troutman, of the home; one son, Chris Troutman and his wife Stephanie, of Charlotte NC; three grandchildren, Virginia Page Troutman, Donna Lea Troutman and William Briggs Troutman; two brothers, Jack Troutman and his wife Willie, of the Burbank Community in Roan Mountain, J.L Troutman and his wife Jean, of the Burbank Community in Roan Mountain; one sister, Willie Barnett, of Hampton; one sister-in-law, Dorris Troutman, of Hampton. 2646 ELIZABETHTON - Randy Cleveland McKinney, age 74, of the Gap Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 from the Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

Randy was born in Elizabethton, but had spent 20 + years in Roan Mountain, before returning to the Gap Creek Community. He was a son of the late C.H. "Pee Wee" McKinney and Ruella Nave McKinney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an older sister, Charlotte Ann McKinney in 1984; and a brother-in-law, Steve Payne in December 2017.

Randy retired from the Northeast Correctional Facility in Mountain City, Tennessee. He was a National Guard veteran and was a member of the 1962 graduating class at Happy Valley High School. Randy was a member of Big Spring Church of Christ, where he was baptized in 1956. He enjoyed draft horses, wagon trains and farming with horses.

Those left to cherish his memories include two sons, James C. McKinney, of the home and Matthew L. McKinney and wife Diane, of Roan Mountain; two granddaughters, Shellie McKinney and Mattison McKinney, both of Roan Mountain; one grandson, Randall Johnson, of Roan Mountain; one sister, Linda M. Payne, of the Milligan College Community; one brother, Michael McKinney and companion Susie Bledsoe and Michael's grandson, Kody Austin, all of Elizabethton; a nephew, Alex Payne and wife Andrea and their daughter, Eva; and two nieces, Krista McKinney Richardson and her sons, Chance McKinney and Lane Richardson, and Kara McKinney Austin. Several cousins also survive.

2647 ELIZABETHTON - Ray Glover, 81, of Elizabethton, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital, from injuries suffered from a fall earlier in the week. He passed peacefully with his family by his bedside.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jeanette, of the home; daughter Renee Erwin and her husband, Jeff, of Elizabethton; son Boyd “Chip” Glover of Fort Lauderdale, FL; granddaughter April Reece and her husband, Aaron, of Elizabethton; and great-grandson Dawson Reece, of Elizabethton. Ray is also survived by a sister, Nell Taylor, and her husband Larry, of Mount Carmel, TN; a brother, Johnny Glover, and his wife Judy, of Hampton, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive, including a very close nephew, Josh Taylor, of Bradenton, FL.

Ray was the son of the late Boyd Carter Glover and Mattie Mosler and was born on December 7, 1940, in Carter County. He was a 1959 graduate of Elizabethton High School. He then joined the United States Army and was stationed in Ansbach Germa-ny with the 4th Missile Battalion, 28th Artillery (Lacrosse Missile).

After completing his military service in 1962, Ray became a businessman in East Ten-nessee and Kentucky. Ray and his wife, Jeanette, spent almost 25 years as the owners of Glover Theaters, which included theaters such as the Bonnie Kate, State Line Drive-In, Jolly Roger, Flatwoods Drive-In, and the Cougar Drive-In. Ray and Jeanette also owned and operated Capitol Discount and Brittney’s in Elizabethton. In addition, Ray served as a mentor to Chip with his business, All-Star Card Company.

Ray’s many interests included watching classic movies, especially westerns of the 1930s and 1940s, going to film festivals, flea markets, and traveling—including over a dozen trips to China. He served for many years on the City of Elizabethton’s Baseball Commission and attended the Elizabethton Twins minor league baseball games. After his retirement from his own businesses, Ray enjoyed working for his good friend, Wille McVey, at Valley Forge Auction and Wholesale where the employees and cus-tomers were like family to him.

Ray never met a stranger and leaves behind many wonderful friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, October 5, at 7 p.m. at East Side Free Will Baptist Church in Elizabethton, under the direction of Pastor Justin Deaton. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m. before the service.

The Entombment Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday October 6, 2022 in the Mausole-um of Faith, Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be chosen from his honor-ary pallbearers, family, and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Erwin, Larry Taylor, Josh Taylor, Aaron Reece, Willie McVey, Bill Vaught, C.Y. 2648 ELIZABETHTON - Richard "Kenneth" Vanover, Sr., age 63, of Elizabethton, TN, passed away Friday, January 26, 2018 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness.

A native of Mountain City, he was a son of the late Matthew and Elleree Vanover.

Mr. Vanover was a former employee of Gardner Paint Service, Johnson City. He was known as a jack of all trades, and was always willing to help anyone who asked.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Vanover was preceded in death by three brothers, Lloyd, Earl and Arvil Vanover.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Teresa Kay Roark Vanover, Elizabethton; two daughters, Vanessa Vanover and Mike Stark, Hampton, Catherine Vanover and Mitch Cole, Elizabethton; one son, Richard Vanover, Jr. and Christy Vanover, Central Community; six grandchildren, Willie Stevens, Franny and Eric Knox, Gabby Vanover, Zoey Cole, and Austin Vanover; one great grandchild, Brooke Knox; four brothers, Dayton Vanover and wife Carol, Johnny Vanover, J.C Vanover, all of Mountain City, D.L Vanover, Kansas; two sisters, Karolen Davis and husband Howard, North Carolina, Debbie Vanover, Mountain City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

2649 ELIZABETHTON - Richard Brent Taylor, 75, Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at his residence. He was born October 27, 1947 in Elizabethton to the late Robert Lesley and Bernice Odessa Grindstaff Taylor. Richard was a 1965 graduate of Unaka High School. He had baseball scholarship at Lincoln Memorial University, Harrogate, Tenn. He graduated with a degree in Sociology. Richard served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. He was a retired Millwright. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Geraldine Hinkle, Glenna Sue Pritchard and Pamela Wilson, nephews: John Arrowwood, Steven Pritchard and Elmo Hinkle and a brother: Jay Taylor.

Survivors include a sister: Peggy Ann Arrowwood, Greeneville, Tenn. His Brother-in-Law: Dennis Wilson, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews. A special friend Bill Grant and his four daughters: Paige, Morgan, Shy and Lisa. His cat: Mr. Spink.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, January 6, 2023 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery (Historic Section) with Mr. Todd Houston, Minister officiating. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 12:45 p.m. Friday will be: Chris Wilson, Jeremy Wilson, Mark Wilson, Tristan Wilson, Ron Wilson and Lester Wilson. 2650 ELIZABETHTON - Richard Douglas Ornduff, age 79, Of Elizabethton, Tennessee passed away on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Richard was born in Elizabethton to the late Frank and Gladys Gentry Ornduff. In addition to his parents, Richard was also preceded in death by his older sisters, Frances E. Ornduff and Peggy J. Orndfuff; his oldest brother, Harry L. Ornduff; and a nephew, Eric Lee Collins.

Richard was a loving brother and a good Christian man who loved spending time with his sister. He was definitely unique and a very kind person. He had worked as a plumber and was a member of First Baptist Church of Elizabethton. In his spare time Richard enjoyed reading and watching football.

Those left to remember him include a sister, Millie J. Collins and a brother, David R. Ornduff; as well as his twin nephews, Timothy and Gregory Ornduff and one great nephew, Matthew Ornduff.
