| 251 | "Elizabethton Star," Wednesday, February 24, 1937 MRS. DAN HYDER IS VICTIM OF SHORT ILLNESS Mrs. Sarah Alice Hyder, widow of Dan L. Hyder former Elizabethton postmaster, who died on December 23, succumbed to an illness of pneumonia this morning at 8:30 o'clock. Mrs. Hyder had been ill for a week with influenza, which later developed into double pneumonia. Funeral services will be conducted from the home Thursday afternoon at two o'clock with the Rev. Clay Wilson assisted by the Rev. S. O. Pinkerton and the Rev. C. L. Bowden, in charge. Interment will be in the Little Cemetery. Mrs. Hyder was born in Johnson City, Feb. 1, 1879 to the Rev. F. H. and Nannie Keys Little, a prominent county[sic] family. When a small girl she moved with her family to Carter county where she had since resided. Her marriage with Dan L. Hyder united her with one of Carter county's first families, and one who had much to do with the early history of this section. She was an active member of the Doe River Baptist Church for the past twenty-two years. Survivors are five daughters, Mrs. Cale Ellis, Mrs. Dan White of Elizabethton, Mrs. Stuart Lewis, Mrs. Aaron Odom of Johnson City, Mrs. Sam Dunn of Yankeetown, Fla.; three sons, Lon, Fletcher and Dan Hyder of Elizabethton; five brothers, John Little of Unicoi, Jack Little, A. U. Little, A. R. Little and Tom Little of Elizabethton; also fifteen grandchildren. Two children preceded her to the grave, Ralph Hyder, five years ago, and Ailene, twenty years ago. Active pallbearers will be Luther Hyder, Clay Little, Cecil Little, Walter Little, Clarence Little, Ray Hyder, Charles Little and Ray Little. | 253 | "Elizabethton Star," Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1931 MACK ELLIOTT KILLED IN PA. Word has been received here by G. M. Garland, Broad Street, that Mack Elliott, a former resident of Carter County and brother-in-law of Garland, had been killed in an accident in Pennsylvania Monday afternoon. No further particulars were known at noon today, except that the body was being shipped to Elizabethton for burial. Elliott was about 35 years of age and was a native of this county, residing at Hunter for many years. During labor troubles here, Elliott's home at Hunter was blown up by dynamite and completely demolished, which was one of the most exciting and drastic moves during the strike. A thorough investigation was held by state and local officials following the explosion but no one was ever captured or convicted for the deed. Elliott left here some time after the wrecking of his home and accepted a position with the Standard Oil Company in Pennsylvania with which company he was working when his death occurred. The brief information received here in a telegram yesterday did not say whether he met his death in an automobile accident or in the plant of the oil company. The body will probably arrive in Elizabethton for burial some time tomorrow. The deceased is a brother of Mrs. G. M. Garland and Mrs. J. R. Boles, both of Elizabethton. He is a cousin of County Tax Assessor James Elliott. ELLIOTT, Mack "Elizabethton Star," Friday, January 9, 1931 AUTO ACCIDENT KILLS ELLIOTT Funeral services for Mack Elliott who was killed in an automobile accident in Ohio Monday afternoon, was held at the Baptist Church at Winner, Tennessee, yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with the Rev. Kilgore in charge. Interment followed in the Ritchie Cemetery nearby. According to information received here by relatives, Elliott was killed when the car he was driving had a head-on collision with another car Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock near Chambersburg, Ohio, while he was en route to his home at Folsom, Pennsylvania. He received a crushed skull in the accident and died twenty minutes later. Brown Elliott, a nephew of the deceased man, was in the car at the time and escaped with only painful bruises. In giving the information, the nephew said, "We were going pretty fast as we were in a hurry to get back home and start on our work the next morning. It was raining, and the collision occurred when we attempted to pass a car in front of us and collided head-on with another car coming facing us." The body was shipped here for burial. An ambulance from North Funeral Home met the train there and conveyed the remains to the home of his mother, Mrs. J. P. Elliott of Winner, after being prepared for burial. Mr. Elliott had been mechanical foreman for the Sun Oil Company in Pennsylvania for the past two years. He is a native of Carter County and is well known here. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nora Elliott; mother, Mrs. J. P. Elliott of Winner; three brothers, Mark Elliott of Stoney Creek, who is an invalid; George Elliott also of Stoney Creek, and M. B. | 255 | "Elizabethton Star," Wednesday, January 10, 1945 Mrs. Treadway Dies; Funeral Arrangements Made Funeral services for Mrs. James Treadway, 73, who died at her home in Valley Forge Tuesday night at 6:45 o'clock following an illness of three months, will be conducted Friday morning at 11 o'clock from the Church of Christ at Valley Forge. Conducting the rites will be the Rev. John Shepherd assisted by the Rev. Oswald Wilson. Burial will be in the Smith cemetery. Mrs. Treadway was a member of the Free Will Baptist church. Survivors include her husband, James Treadway; two sons, R. L. of Knoxville and Arthur of Elizabethton; one daughter, Mrs. Mac Hathaway; two grandchildren; one brother, W. L. | 256 | "Elizabethton Star," Wednesday, January 13, 1932 DEATHS. JACOB NOAH STOUT Jacob Noah Stout, an honorable citizen of Neva, Johnson county, Tennessee, passed away at his late home January 10. He was in his 87th year. Mr. Stout was a devout member of Pine Grove Baptist church, Neva, Johnson County. His friends spoke of him as an upright and just citizen. He stood for the general uplift of his community in every particular. Being a kind and generous neighbor was one of his most popular characteristics. He was married to Miss Amanda Bailey January 13, 1866, she being a member of a pioneer family. To this union ten children were born, four of them survive, namely: Rev. James Stout of Elizabethton, Lem L. Stout of Neva, Mrs. Alice Williams of Sugar Grove, North Carolina, and Grant Stout of Elizabethton, Tenn. His wife preceded him to the grave November 26, 1926. Mr. Stout's funeral was held at his home yesterday afternoon. When quite young he took an active interest in the affairs of his country. He strongly opposed succession and enlisted at the age of eighteen years in Company "M" Thirteenth Tennessee Cavalry in the war between the states, performing valiant service until the close of the war. He descends from a long line of patriots. His pioneer ancestor, Daniel Stout, served as captain in the Revolutionary war in Pennsylvania, and emigrated to the Watauga settlement about the close of the Revolutionary war. The wife of Capt. Daniel Stout was a Miss Fultz. The old German family Bible of Capt. Daniel Stout is now in the possession of a descendant at Cookeville, Tennessee. This record shows that his oldest son, Daniel was born Aug. 6, 1761. The Stout family has furnished a full quota of soldiers for all wars on both land and sea from the settlement of the American colonies on down to the present day. | Stout, Jacob Noah (I1138)

Mr. Allen was a native of Carter county, son of the late Jones and Mary Ferguson Allen, prominent families of Carter county. He was a member of the Roan Mt. Baptist Church. ARNOLD Mrs. Eva Arnold, highly respected woman of Hampton, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Sam Jackson, at that place at 6:45 this morning. The deceased was the daughter of the late Jordan Jones and was born in Elizabethton. Her early life spent in Johnson county. She was married to William Arnold, who died several years ago. Forty-eight years ago, she moved to Hampton, where she has since resided. Early in life she united with the Baptist church. Her friends were counted by the hundreds, everyone who met her becoming immediately attracted by her kind, loving and motherly attitude.Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. B. C. Campbell, Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Jim Vanhuss, Indianapolis, Ind.; Mrs. C. L. Baker, Raleigh, N. C.; Mrs. W. F. Mathes, Rossville, Ga.; Mrs. E. M. | 262 | "Elizabethton Star," Wednesday, July 2, 1930 PROMINENT FARMER HERE SHOOTS SELF LUTHER BOWERS, Ninth District Commits Suicide Near Home This Morning. Luther A. Bowers, 35, a prominent farmer of the ninth district, in the Blue Springs section of Carter county shot and instantly killed himself with a single barreled 12-gauge shot-gun at ten o'clock this morning, according to a decision received at noon of a coroner's jury under the charge of County Coroner Robert T. Johnson, Jr. A single shot wound in Bowers' neck was said to be the cause of his death, and indications showed that it was self-inflicted. The shooting occurred in a roadway about a hundred yards from his home. According to a statement of his wife, Bowers mentioned to members of his family that he believed that a fox was among his chickens, taking his gun and accompanied by his ten-year-old son, he went about a hundred yards up the road that ran by the farmhouse, and asked the boy to go into the bushes to look for the fox. It was while the boy was away that the shot was heard. "I became alarmed as soon as I heard the shot, and felt that Luther had killed himself," said Mrs. Bowers. "He has been in ill health for a number of months, and recently has not acted as if he were in his right mind." The son was said to have rushed back to his father when he heard the report of the gun, but Bowers was dead before the boy could reach him although only having to cover a distance of about thirty yards. An imprint was found in the road seemingly made from the stock of the gun being placed upon the ground, Coroner Johnson said, and there were powder burns on his left hand. Members of the family who were nearby said that the report of the gun sounded as if it was muffled, or that the end of the barrel had been placed against some object. Neighbors stated to the jury that Bowers had been acting queer for a number of days, that he would seldom talk to any one, and appeared as if some depressing matter was on his mind. Bowers was a prominent and well-known farmer of his community, and was a descendant of an old Carter county family. He has scores of acquaintances throughout the county. Funeral arrangements have not yet been made. The body was brought to a local undertaking establishment to be prepared for burial. Bowers is survived by his widow and eight small children. Bowers, 34, who died at his home on Blue Springs Branch at ten o'clock yesterday morning, were held at his home this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in charge of the Rev. Franch Wampler. Interment followed in the Bowers family cemetery. The deceased is survived by his widow, Flora Bowers, four daughters and four sons, and his mother Mrs. Ike Morrell. Bowers was alleged to have shot himself yesterday, believed caused by ill health of several months duration. NANNIE ALLEN Mrs. Nannie Allen, 58, prominent resident of the Siam section, and a member of one of the most prominent families of Carter County, died this morning at 6 o'clock, after a week's illness. Mrs. Allen was born September 14, 1877, the daughter of the late Robert and Eva Treadway of Watauga Valley. She was married to W. B. Allen of Siam in 1899, moving to the Siam section, where she has since resided. She was a life-long member of the Baptist church, having joined the Watauga Valley Baptist Church at an early age. Surviving are four daughters, Misses Mary, Maude, Olive and Bernice Allen; three sons, Will and John, both of Siam, and Frank Allen of Bristol, Tenn.; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Percy of Elizabethton, Misses Lena and Ethel Treadway, both of Watauga Valley; two brothers, Charles and Hicks Treadway, both of Watauga Valley. Funeral services will be conducted from the Baptist church at Siam Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. C. H. Hopkins, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. C. L. Bowden of Elizabethton, the Rev. Roscoe C. Smith of Erwin and the Rev. S. O. Pinkerton of Bluff City. Music will be in charge of Mrs. C. L. Bowden. Burial will be in the cemetery near the church. | 267 | "Elizabethton Star," Wednesday, July 8, 1942 William Marsh, Well-Known Local Figure, Dies [photo] William B. Marsh, a prominent figure in county political, civic and business affairs for many years, died suddenly last evening at seven o'clock, at the age of 49. Mr. Marsh had been in failing health for several months but his sudden death was unexpected and came as a great shock to his many friends. A native of Carter county, Mr. Marsh had lived most of his life in Elizabethton. He attended schools in the county and was graduated from the State Teachers College and subsequently taught school here. He had been Civil Service examiner for a number of years and was affiliated with the local post office as a rural carrier for eighteen years. For a number of years he was chairman of the Democratic party of Carter county and served also as state Democratic election commissioner. At one time he was candidate for state senator on the Democratic ticket but was defeated by a small margin. For four years he served as a colonel on the staff of ex-Governor Browning. Mr. Marsh was widely interested in civic and business affairs. He built and owned the structure now occupied by the J. C. Penney Company and the Elizabethton Hardware Company and was one of the officials of the Marsh-Hyder Hardware Company and the Service Lumber Company when those two companies were in existence. He was affiliated with the First Christian Church of Elizabethton and was a member of the Dashiel Lodge, Modern Woodmen and Junior Order. Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Corintha Hyder Marsh; two daughters, Mrs. Margaret Mottern, Mrs. Hazle Clear; one son: William B. Marsh, Jr., his mother, Mrs. Ellen Whittemore; stepfather, Mr. A. G. Whittemore; one brother, M. H. Marsh, all of Elizabethton. The body will be removed from the Roy Hathaway Funeral Home to the home Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock. Funeral services will be conducted from the First Christian church Thursday afternoon at 4:00 o'clock with the Rev. J. J. Musick and Rev. John Shepherd officiating. Luther Hampton and Mrs. Daisy Williams will be in charge of the music. Burial will be made in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be: J. B. Gibson, K. P. Banks, R. T. Mr. Ellis lived by himself and was alone at the time of his death, which is said to have occurred about six o'clock. His body was found by a neighbor child. Dr. W. W. Evans and Deputy Sheriff Charles DeLoach investigated his death this morning and their verdict was that he died from a heart attack. The deceased was a native of Carter County and was for years a prominent farmer. He was a member of the Border View Christian Church. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. R. C. Mrs. Grindstaff came to the community from Johnson County 36 years ago. She was a member of the Christian Baptist Church of Doeville. Survivors are her husband, Zeb Grindstaff; two daughters, Mrs. Ida Carriager of Johnson City, Mrs. Lily Mays of Elizabethton; two sons, Manuel of Bristol and Wiley of Elizabethton; two brothers, James and Oscar Blackburn of Johnson City. Sutherland, who died Saturday night at St. Lukes Hospital at Richmond, Va., were held from the family home Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Sutherland was 66 years of age. She had been ill for more than a year and for the past several months had been a patient at the hospital in Richmond. Her death was expected and members of the family were at her bedside. Mrs. Sutherland was before her marriage Miss Nannie Wright of Damascus, Va. Her husband, J. A. Sutherland died about 25 years ago. The following children survive her: Daily Sutherland, Los Angeles, Cal., Ferd Sutherland of N. C., Mrs. George Oster, Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs. J. D. He also bought and sold several tracts of land in this same area. Ham was fun loving, hard working and a gregarious man who loved his family more than anything else. When the Cloudland Hotel was first built on Roan Mountain, he played the fiddle with a band there whenever he got the opportunity. Some of the songs played were: "Boil that cabbage down", "Cripple Creek", and "Turkey in The Straw". His wife was a very staunch woman and considered fiddle playing to be "frolicking", which was to her mind a great sin. A little fiddle playing and banjo plunking around the house was not so bad, but to go play where there might be dancing and no telling what else, was a matter of great concern to her. This difference of belief was not so serious though, and they lived their entire married lives together without serious conflict". Va.; Boone Isaacs, Shady Valley; Lawson Isaacs, Elk Park; Robert Isaacs, Abingdon, Va.; Pvt. Conley Clay Isaacs, Camp Lee, Va. Lowe, which occurred June 22. Death came from drowning in the port of San Jose, Gautemala, with the body being recovered June 27. Burial was on June 28 in Corazal Cemetery, Canal Zone. Private Lowe had been in the Army for 14 months. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Among his survivors are the parents, R. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. She united with the Timber Ridge Baptist Church, and has lived a faithful Christian life. She was united in marriage to Samuel J. Heaton on June 18, 1905. To this union were born 13 children, four of whom have already preceded her in death. On July 6 at 5:30 p.m. the Lord saw fit to call her to her Heavenly home. Surviving are her husband, S. J. Heaton, six daughters, Mrs. Ida Carter and Mrs. Mae Futrell, Johnson City, Mrs. Inez Hamilton, Elizabethton, Mrs. Eva Lynne Sheets, Miss Cora Heaton, Miss Clara Heaton; three sons, Loyd and Floyd Heaton, Butler, Pfc. To this union were born two children: Mrs. Garrison Garland and Mrs. Ralph Danner. She is survived by six sisters and one brother: Mrs. Martha Arnold, Mrs. Rebecca Tester, Mrs. Sarah Pierce, Mrs. Alice Whaley, Mrs. Bessie Garland, and Garfield Church. One brother, John Church, preceded her in death. The deceased is also survived by nine grandchildren and a host of friends. Mrs. Moody was converted and joined the church 33 years ago.
