1451 BURLINGTON — Mr. William "Bill" Earl Taylor, of Burlington, N.C., died Monday, September 3, 2007, at Alamance Regional Hospital.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, September 6, in the chapel of the First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, N.C.
He was the husband of the late Miriam Keifer Taylor for 58 years, when she died in September 2002. He was born March 5, 1918, in Richmond, Ky. He went on to graduate from Eastern Kentucky University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He served in the Army during World War II in the European Theater of Operations.
William taught Industrial Arts in Greensboro North Carolina Public Schools from 1946 - 1958. He became the director of Industrial Arts & Vocational Education in Greensboro Public Schools from 1958 - 1962. Following that, he became the President of Alamance Community College, where he served in that capacity until his retirement in 1982. He held offices in the following North Carolina Vocational Association, North Central Schoolmasters Club, Alamance Community Action Program, The National Council of Local Administrators of Vocational Education & Practical Arts, Alamance County Chamber of Commerce, the Salvation Army Advisory Board and The Boys & Girls Advisory Council in Burlington, the Cherokee Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Alamance County United Way. He was the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award of North Carolina Vocational Association, the Certificate of Merit from the American Vocational Association, an Honorary Degree Doctor of Laws from Elon College and a member of the Hall of Distinguished Alumni from Eastern Kentucky University.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Burlington, where he had served as an Elder and volunteered with Habitat of Humanity.
He is survived by his daughter, Jane Taylor Jarvis and husband, Kenneth L. Jarvis, Jr.; sons, Steven Todd Taylor and Timothy Daniel Taylor; grandchildren, Jennifer Jarvis, Kenneth Jarvis III, Christopher Jarvis and his wife, Dana, Rebeca Taylor and Meagan Taylor; two great grandchildren, Lyza Karoly Jarvis and Andreas Oliver Jarvis; extended family, Wendy Taylor, Anne Partna-Jarvis, and Riki Tindall.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the John Knox room.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The First Presbyterian Church of Burlington, 508 W. Davis St., Burlington, NC 27215 and the Alamance Community College Foundation, 1247 Jimmie Kerr Road, Haw River, NC 27258.

1452 Burnett Hamby, 75, of Elizabethton, passed away Monday, August 19, 2019, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Roan Mountain, he was a son of the late Barney and Martha Ashley Hamby.
Burnett had lived in Indiana and Arkansas before returning to Carter County. He was a construction worker.
Burnett attended Southside Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include his children, Burnett Hamby Jr. and wife Marie Hamby of Elizabethton and Deon Podgorski of Indiana; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 21, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Steve Burleson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond, Ind.

1453 Burnice Clyde Gentry, age 73, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday night, November 19, 2017 at his residence, with his family by his side. He was born on February 11, 1944 in Johnson County to Dorothy Absher Gentry and the late Calvin Eugene Gentry. In addition to his father, Burnice was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Ruth Wilson Gentry; sons: Steven Clyde Gentry, Richard Eugene Gentry and Jon David Gentry and a brother, Paul Gentry.

Burnice worked at the JCHS for 21 years as Head Custodian. He had also worked at the Mountain City Police Department and Johnson County Sheriff's Department.

He loved fishing, wrestling, race cars and football. Burnice was a 'jokester' and was always laughing and cutting up. We will miss his sense of humor and his laughter.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 34 years, Linda Slemp Gentry; loving daughters: Connie Gentry and Tammy Wilson; mother, Dorothy Gentry; granddaughters: Kelsey Gentry and Danielle Dugger; great grandson, Hero Reign Taylor; brothers: Roger Gentry and wife Wanda, Bob Gentry and wife Betty; sisters: Janie Trivette and husband Brian, Darlene Dunn and husband Larry; sisters-in-law, Mary Slemp and Shelby Gentry; brother-in-law, Larry Slemp; special friends: Suzanne Dial, Angie Stout, Pastor Steven Spencer, Charlene McCarty, Staff of Mountain City Care Center and Amedysis Hospice, especially Mandy Ward and Gail Miller; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1-3:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor David Bentley and Brother-in-law, Larry Dunn officiating. Special music will be provided by Larry and Brenda Barry and Megan McEwen. Graveside service and interment will follow at the Wilson Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jerry Gentry, Bud Gentry, Gary Gentry, Doug Price, Everett Brown and Logan Taylor. Honorary pallbearers are James Parker, Larry Slemp, Rick Ramsey, Daryl Reece, Brian Storie and Danny Cullop.

Bert French Roark died Feb 14 at his home. He lived with his son Bert and daughter-in-law Barbara Roark at Princeton(OR). Viewing will be Friday morning at LaFollette's Chapel in Burns with graveside service at 2pm at Crane Cemetery.
Born March 10,1910, in Mountain City,TN, to Samuel and Naomi Roark, he worked on the family farm until he came to Central Oregon in the 1930's to work herding sheep. He trapped for the government in Harney county and Central Oregon in the 1930's and 1940's. He started logging in the 1950's and continued in this occupation until he retired.
Trapping for fur, hunting and fishing were special interests all his life.
He is survived by his wife Leah of Pendleton; sons Sam of Parkdale, Lester Roark of Pendleton, John Roark of Pendleton, Russell Roark of Baker City, Bert Roark of Princeton, Clayton Roark and Jason Roark of Anchorage, Alaska; daughters Oma Ricker of Haines and Luella Roark; brothers Ed Roark and Wayne Roark of Mountain City,TN, Ray Roark of Parkdale; sisters Fay Die of Yuma,AZ and Mae Osborne of Parkdale.

1455 Burton Randal got a marriage license to Jennie Poore in Washington County, TN on 21 August 1908. it was returned to the county clerk on 26 Sep 1908 with a statement "Returned by Randall with the statement that the girl wouldn't act".

He then got a marriage license to Cora Henley in Washington County, TN on 26 September 1908. It was returned on 3 January 1912 with a statement "The girl loved someone else better than him".

He next got a marriage license to Rebecca Henley, Cora's sister on 18 Jul 1912. They were married on 20 Jul 1912. They later divorced.

He next got another marriage license to Jennie Poore in Unicoi County, TN on 18 September 1915. They were married on 20 September 1915.

1456 Buster T. Penix, 77, 320 Cripple Creek Loop, Watauga, TN died Friday, August 5, 2005 in the Johnson City Medical Center. Mr. Penix was a native of Sullivan County and had lived in Watauga since 2003. He was a son of the late Elbert and Lula Barr Penix. Mr. Penix was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation with thirty five years of service. He is preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and two sisters. Survivors include: his wife, Jo Bowlin Penix of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Al Burrell of Watauga; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Deb Penix of Kingsport; One sister, Martha Richardson of Bakersville, NC; two grandchildren and spouse, Nathan and Jennifer Penix of Kingsport, Danny Penix of Kingsport. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mr. Buster T. Penix will be held at 8 PM Sunday, August 7, 2005 in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. Donnie Humphreys, officiating.
The graveside service will be held at 10:30 AM Monday in the Shell Cemetery in Piney Flats. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 10:15 AM Monday for the service. 1457 BUTLER - Ernest Trivette Jr of Butler passed away on Thursday, September 19, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

He was the son of the late John Bell and Callie Mae Ward Trivette. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Anna Mae Fortner, Alberta Greene, and Arbeulah Lambert.

Junior, as he was known by his family and friends retired from United Cities Gas Company after 17 years where he was a manager. Junior served his country during the Korean War in the United States Army where he held the rank of Sergeant.

Junior was a man of few words who enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his wife, friends and his four-legged babies, Chloe and Lulu at their mountain home.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Betty Gilbert Trivette, several nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends Todd Trivette, Bobby Trivette, Dewey and Ella Mae Dugger.

A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at the Mountain Home National Cemetery.

1458 BUTLER - Bonnie L. Stout, age 82, of Butler, Tennessee, went to be with her Lord on Friday, January 24, 2020 at Lakebridge Waters Community in Johnson City, TN, after a lengthy illness.

She was born on August 2, 1937 in Johnson County, TN to the late William and Verna Lowe. In addition to her parents, Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Stout; sister; Venia Stout & Sue Roberts, brothers; Farley, Clarence, Delmer, Senter, & Roby Lowe.

Bonnie enjoyed cooking, canning, and gardening. She loved being able to keep and Spend time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Little Doe Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories are her sons, Ricky Stout and Bobby Stout & wife Robin. Grandchildren, Courtney Stout and Connor Stout. Special Niece that was by her side; Dorsey Lowe. Special friend, Beaut Hardin and other nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 27, 2020 from the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Kreg Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service. The graveside service and interment will be conducted Tuesday, January 28, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Rock Springs Cemetery. Pallbearers will be, Mike Stout, Eddie Courtner, Scott Courtner, Ray Stout, Marty Trivette, Carl Howard and David Bunting. 1459 BUTLER - CC Phillips Jr., age 87, of Butler, Tennessee, passed away Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born on July 16, 1931 to the late Neil and Hester (Bunton) Phillips. In addition to his parents, CC was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Vernice; one step-son, Wayne Jessee; sister, Chestalee Mansfield and Irene Morrell and brothers, Thomas, Charlie, Elmer, Dayton and Ernest Phillips.

CC was a United States Army Veteran and served during the Korean War. CC was always happy and had a contagious smile and laugh. He never met a stranger and was always helping others.

CC enjoyed being outdoors and especially enjoyed watching fish in his pond.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Phillips, who was his teenage sweetheart. They were reunited again and married in 1988 and had 30 wonderful years together. Also surviving are his children; Colleen Charland and husband Roland, Sonny Phillips and wife Gail, Andy Phillips and Holly Lopez and husband Alfonso; sister, Maxine Landry; brother, Aubrey 'Tex' Phillips and Sandy; grandchildren; Bryan Charland and wife Leah and their daughter, Loryn, Joey Charland and wife Erica and their son, Lincoln, David Charland and wife Monica, Eyonne Lopez, Alfonso Lopez; step grandchildren, Terri and Storm and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 12-1:00 p.m. Monday, April 22, 2019 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. Funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Ray Greene officiating. 1460 BUTLER - Edna Honeycutt Stalcup, Butler passed away Sunday, November 19, 2017 at her residence.

She was born May 28, 1930 in old Butler, the eldest child and only daughter of the late Tine & Fern Slemp Honecyutt. Edna was preceded in death by two husbands: Paul Courtner and Lowell Edwin Stalcup, three brothers: Albert "Bud" Honeycutt, Charles Edwin Honeycutt and Richard Burl Honeycutt. She was educated at the Butler Grammar School and Watauga Academy of old Butler. She was the Valedictorian of the last class of 1948 at Watauga Academy. She earned her B.S. Degree in Elementary Education and Secondary English, also her Master's Degree from East Tennessee State College in Guidance and counseling, her E.D.S. Degree from Appalachian State University, Boone, NC. In Supervision and Higher Education.

Edna worked forty two years in the Johnson County School System, the last 24 years of her career she served as Guidance Counselor at Johnson County High School.

She was a lifelong member of Butler Baptist Church, serving as Training Union Director, Sunday School Teacher and Choir member. She loved God, her family, and friends. She loved helping people of all ages. She was a member of Butler Chapter # 218 Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include one nephew: Bruce Alan Honeycutt, Pembina, North Dakota. Two Nieces: Melanie Atkins & husband Barron, Bristol, Va., and Angela Rasnake and husband Steve, Piney Flats, two great nieces: Madison Rasnake and Alexa Rasnake, Piney Flats, one sister-in-law: Linda Honeycutt, Piney Flats. One Aunt & Uncle: Ethel & Wayne Harris, Johnson City.

A Celebration of Life Service for Edna will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 25, 2017 in Butler Baptist Church with the Rev. Daniel Wood officiating. Interment will follow in Butler Memorial Cemetery. Music will be provided by Rev. Daniel Wood and Mrs Betty Cunningham, Organist. Active Pallbearers will be: Barron Atkins, Steve Rasnake, Froy Hernandez, James Johnson, T.J. Little, David Pleasant and Harry Pierce. 1461 BUTLER - Elwood A. Arnold, 89, Butler, passed away unexpectedly Monday, June 14, 2021 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was born July 29, 1931 in Butler to the late Eddie & Eliza Pleasant Arnold. In earlier years Elwood was a trucker. In 1971 he opened Arnolds Auto Sales. Elwood was a member and Deacon of Little Doe Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Doris Garrison Arnold who passed away December 20, 2006, by a sister: Bernice Matherly and four brothers: J.E., Park, James & Delmar Arnold. In his spare time, he loved to farm.

Survivors include his sons & daughters-in-law: Randy & Tina Arnold, Butler and Chuck & Becky Arnold, Gray. Two Grandchildren: Ryan Arnold and Hope Arnold. Two Great Grandchildren: Lillian Arnold and Isaiah Arnold. Several nieces & nephews. His special friends: Larry Mullins Howard Stout and Carter Isaacs.

There will be a service conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2021 in the Mausoleum of Peace, Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor. Kreg Smith officiating. Entombment will follow the service. Active Pallbearers will be Deacons of Little Doe Baptist Church, family and friends.

1462 BUTLER - Gary W. Wagner, age 69, of Butler, Tennessee, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 01, 2019 at his home.

He was born on March 24, 1950 in Elizabethton, TN to the late Melvel Vaught Wagner and Bonnie Maude McQueen Wagner. In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Cathy Hyder Wagner, who passed away on July 5, 2018 and a sister in law, Tresie Wagner.

Gary was an outdoors person and loved to hunt and fish. He was an Electrician and formally worked for Texas Instrument and Siemens.

Those left to cherish his memories include his son, Trafton Wagner and his wife Kristy and their children, Hunter and Chloe Wagner; brother, Mel Wagner; Aunt Kate Potter; nephew, Jody Wagner and wife Kala; cousin, Ann Potter Tuttle and mother in law, Helen Hyder of Erwin and friend, John Blackmore.

The family will receive friends from 1-2:30 p.m. Friday, July 5, 2019 at the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with the funeral service to follow at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Don Winters officiating. 1463 BUTLER - Geraldine Forrester Cable, 82, Butler, passed away Saturday, December 4, 2021 in the Mountain City Care Center. She was born June 10, 1939 in Erwin, Tennessee to the late Hubert and Margaret Howell Forrester. She had lived her entire life in Butler. Geraldine was a graduate of Johnson County High School. She had been employed by the Johnson County School System for 28 years as a cook at Doe Elementary School. She was an active member of Little Doe Baptist Church, where she sang in the church choir for several years. She was also a member of Butler Chapter #218 Order of Eastern Star and Beta Theta Club. She was a granddaughter of Oscar & Ella Forrester whom she lived with for a number of years.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years: Richard Cable. One Son: Teddy Ray (Debbie) Cable, Daytona Beach, Florida. Three Grandchildren: Lacinda Renee Cable Lewis, and fiance Delane Pardue, Wilkesboro, North Carolina, Todd Christopher Cable, Butler and Shauna Raeann Cable, Dayton Beach, Florida. Four Great Grandchildren: Raiden Gage Lewis, Kaidence Jade Lewis, Todd Cable, Jr. and Trinity Cable. Also several cousins. Her fur baby “Sam”

1464 BUTLER - Geraldine Little Lowe, 91, Butler, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2023 in the Signature Health Care of Elizabethton, Tennessee after an extended illness. She was born October 13, 1931 in Jonesborough, Tennessee to the late Roy P. & Mary Elizabeth Treadway Little. She was a 1949 graduate of Elizabethton High School. Geraldine had lived in Butler since 1952. She loved her grandchildren, quilting and sewing. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband J.L. Lowe who passed away April 16, 2003, by four sisters: Shirley Trent, Ruth Greene, Margaret Arney and Katherine Greene and two brothers: Austin and Howard Little. Grealdine was a member of Little Doe Baptist Church.

Survivors include Three Daughters: Patricia (Bobby) Shetley, Erwin, Lori Ann (David) Styles, Johnson City and Tabatha (Howie) Graham, Titusville, Florida. Two Sons: Thomas (Vicky) Lowe, Erwin and David (Joan) Lowe, Butler. Eight Grandchildren, and Eleven Great Grandchildren. One Brother: Jack Little, Fort Worth, Texas. Her Brothers-In-Law: Charlie Lowe and William Lowe. Several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 26, 2023 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Victor Tucker, Minister officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, January 27, 2023 in the Lowe Family Cemetery. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Friday will be: Aaron Potter, Justin Lowe, Brandon Vines, Devin Lowe, Lane Potter, Dale Potter, Howard Graham III, Duncan Graham and Jacob Davis. 1465 BUTLER - Grace Jones Glover, 91, Butler, passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2019 at Hillview Health Center. A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Roby & Essie Stalcup Jones.

Grace was a 1946 graduate of Johnson County High School. She was a homemaker, loved to quilt, visit the sick and fix meals for the sick. Prior to her illness she was an active member of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Ralph & Paul Jones and her sister & brother-in-law: Virginia & Ira Bingham.

Survivors include her nephews & nieces: Terry (Becky) Jones, James Jones, Ira J. Bingham, Angela Jones (Randy) Harkleroad and Stella Lyons. Her Sisters-in-Law; Sara Jones and Nancy Jones. Her special friends: Darrell & Sue Carol Ward.

1466 BUTLER - Ira David Triplett, Jr., 59, Butler, passed away Tuesday, December 10, 2019 in the Franklin Wood Community Hospital following an extended illness.


He was a graduate of the 1979 graduate of Menchville High School, Newport News, Virginia. He was retired due to disability as a truck drive . He was a member of Fish Springs Baptist Church. David was preceded in death by his father, Ira David Triplett, Sr.. He loved his family, loved music and loved to ride Roller Coasters.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years: Retha Duffield Triplett. A Daughter: Deirdre Lunsford & husband Brad, of the home. Three Grandchildren: Loki, Bradlee and Macon. His Mother: Charlene "Pat" Kyte Triplett. Two Brothers: John Triplett & wife Tammy of Missouri and Shawn Triplett & wife Isabella of Texas. A Sister: Pamela Raines & husband Michael of Virginia. Several aunts, uncles, nieces& nephews including a special uncle Tom Kyte & wife Carolyn. His Father & Mother-in-Law: Carl & Carnie Duffield, Mountain City.

Friends may visit with the family at his residence. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.

1467 BUTLER - James Lester Miller, 73, Butler passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017 in the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late James Edgar & Julia Whitehead Miller. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation. He was a member of Piercetown Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Joyce Dean "Stony" Miller and a brother: Eddie.

Survivors include his sons: Lester White, James D. Miller and Stephen S. Miller all of Butler. 8 Grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren. Three Sisters: Mildred Pittman and Margaret Burchett both of Indiana and Barbara Cable, Elizabethton. Several nieces & nephews also survive

Graveside Service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Butler Memorial Cemetery with the Pastor Harvey White officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Family and friends will assemble at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Tuesday.

1468 BUTLER - Jewel Dean White Vines, 84, Butler passed away Sunday, November 5, 2017 in the Johnson County Community Hospital.

Mrs. White was born Friday, May 26, 1933 at Cobb's Creek in Old Butler to the late William Bill & Callie Caldonia Matherly White. She was the last member of her family. Jewel Dean attended Cobb's Creek School. She was a member of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church since age 12. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years: Ray E. Vines who passed away November 3, 1987 and a son Steve "Beater" Vines on October 29, 1996.

Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter: Betty Vines McNeil and a son-in-law that she loved as her own son, Steve. A Son: Ray "June" Vines of Hampton. One Granddaughter: Rebecca "Becky" Neugent, Johnson City, One Grandson: Brandon Vines, Gary, One Great Grandson: Jacob Davis of Kingsport. A very special friend: Jack Guire of Johnson City. A special sister-in-law: Selma Vines, Hampton, Her first cousin: Eva Johnson. Also a special friend: Michelle Vanover.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Harvey White officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 8, 2017 in Butler Memorial Cemetery. Music will be provided by the Butler Baptist Church Choir and Cobbs Creek Baptist Church Choir. 1469 BUTLER - Larry Joe Walsh, 73, Butler, passed away unexpectedly Monday, May 27, 2019 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

Born February 27, 1946 in Butler to the late Roddie V. & Alice Green Walsh. He had lived his entire life in Carter County. He was a 1964 graduate of Hampton High School and graduate from East Tennessee State College with a degree in Psychology. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. Larry was retired as a Social Worker with Children's Service after 37 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Gladys Evans, Eula Mae Main and Anna Ruth Campbell and two brothers: James Riley Walsh and Earl Dayton Walsh.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years: Joyce Vines Walsh. His Children: Wendy Tester & husband Jimmy Tester II, Elizabethton, Jamie Walsh, Chattanooga, and Sherry Walsh, Elizabethton. His Grandchildren: Riley Tester, Makayla Walsh Anderson and Greyson Walsh. Two Brothers: Roddie Walsh, Jr., of California and Bill Walsh, Butler. Several nieces & nephews. His Mother-In-Law Selma Vines, Fish Springs. His four legged baby Zoey.

It was his wish to be cremated and no services are planned.

1470 BUTLER - Lida Mabel Cable Barnes, 100, Butler, Tn. And Emerald isle, NC passed peacefully after a brave battle with cancer on the morning of April 3, 2021. Lida was born on May 29, 1920 to the late Captain Thomas William Cable, Sr. and Sallie Mae Reece Cable of Butler, Tenn. Lida served in the United States Navy from June 15, 1943 to November 16, 1945.She was discharged as a Pharmacist’s Mate First Class. Women were not allowed active duty at that time. She was a graduate of Watauga Academy and East Tennessee State College. She taught for a period of time at Watauga Academy, Butler. She received a degree as a Medical Technologist from Duke University. She was a member of Butler Baptist Church, Butler Chapter # 218, Order of Eastern Star, DAR Otway Burns Chapter and Women Veterans of Coastal North Carolina. In addition to her parents, Lida was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Robert B. Barnes who passed away April 3, 2007, son Tom Barnes, a sister Ann Johnson, and brother Tom Cable.

Survivors include her daughter: Patricia Barnes of Emerald Isle, NC; three granddaughters: Jennifer (Kevin) Snyder of Raleigh, NC, Nikki (Brian) Gant, Marion, NC and Stacy (Lee) Wheeler of Tuscon, AZ; and six great grandchildren. Niece: Brenda Saunders, nephew David Johnson. Several great nieces and great nephews.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2021 in Butler Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Daniel Wood officiating. Music will be provided by Chris Hughes. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at Butler Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Tuesday will be: Brian Gant, William Gant, David McIntosh, David Markland, Phil Babb, Steve Forrester and Alvin Woodby. A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Guy & Anna Mae Matherly Arney. Loretta was a 1962 graduate of Johnson County High School. She was an active member of Little Doe Baptist Church. She was a member of the Church Choir, Sunday School Teacher, active in the WMU and children church.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years: Phillip Garver. Two Children: Darwinn Garver & wife, Melissa, Butler and Sherry Stevens and husband Danny, Piney Flats. 1472 BUTLER - Lynda Sue Birchfield Crow, 69, Butler passed away unexpectedly Sunday, February 3, 2019 at her residence.

Born May 22, 1949 in Butler to the late Allen Stacy & Della Strickland Birchfield. She was a graduate of Johnson County High School where she played drums in the band. Sue was a former employee of Stateline Market for 17 ½ years. She was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years: Fred Kennon Crow. Two Children: Melissa Jollie & husband David, Aiken, South Carolina and Mark Crowe & wife Charmaine, Butler. Four Grandchildren: Benjamin, Rebekah and Joseph Jollie and Marcus Crowe. Her Siblings: Ivalee Stevens & husband Larry and Carolyn Bise & husband Charlie, all of Elizabethton, Jim Birchfield, Watauga and Raymond Birchfield & wife Dossie, Butler. Several nieces & nephews.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, February 7, 2019 in the Walnut Mountain Cemetery, Roan Mountain with the Rev. Harvey White officiating. Burial will follow the service. 1473 BUTLER - Mary L. Greer, age 81, of 489 Pine Orchard Road, Butler, TN, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2006, at the Watauga Medical Center. A native of Johnson County, she was born June 5, 1924, to the late Sam and Ethel Stout. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Greer; one son, Ricky Greer; one daughter, Patricia Dunn; two sisters, Chelsie Moody and Elsie Barr; and three brothers: Earl, Frank and Walter Stout. Mary was retired from Burlington Industries and loved quilting. She was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church, where she was a former secretary, choir member and treasurer. Survivors include two daughters: Wilma Moore, of Mountain City, Betty Potter, of Elizabethton, TN; one son, Junior Campbell, of Lenoir, NC; two sisters: Hazel Branch and Lona Cunningham, both of Butler, TN; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral Services for Mary Greer will be held at 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 10, 2006, from the chapel of the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with the Rev. R.L. Poole and the Rev. Frank Woods to officiate. 1474 BUTLER - Mildred Lily (Matherly) Cole, 98, of Butler, TN was called home to be with the Lord and her devoted husband of 52 years, Everett C. "Pete" Cole and her precious daughter, Betty Sue Matherly unexpectedly on Saturday, December 7, 2019.

She was able to be in her home until the end which meant the world to her. Mildred was born on November 25, 1921 in Butler to the late Edward and Georgia Matherly. In addition to her husband, daughter and parents she was preceded in death by her Brothers, Guy Matherly, Murel Matherly & Elbert Matherly and sisters Bonalee Matherly, Esther Wagner & Margie Bailey. She was also preceded in death by a wonderful son-in-law, Wendell Francis and was the last living matriarch to the Cole family; which she loved and treasured dearly.

Until they meet again, she leaves behind her cherished daughter Carolyn Marie Francis of Florida and her devoted caregiver to the end, her son, Carl Everett Cole of Butler; Grandchildren Amy Jones (Mitch), Paul Francis (Kristina), Angela Matherly, Guy Matherly (Missy), Erica Southerland (Justin), Ashley Cole and Brittany Maness (Dwight). Great-Grandchildren left to cherish many memories: Sarah Peterson, Matthew Matherly (Paige), Morgan Wright, Kirsten Matherly, Kalie Matherly, Xavier Longoria, Madison Matherly, Leah Matherly, Liam Matherly, Alyssa Cain and Michael Southerland. Brother Paul Matherly (Elfreda) and sisters, Virginia Davis, Marie Williams & Sue Pierce and sister-in-law Marie Matherly; many nieces and nephews.

Mildred loved sewing and spent several years working in a drycleaner as a seamstress. She was a passionate quilter creating, giving and sharing many with her children, grandchildren, and many others throughout her life. She spent many years traveling across the country with her husband as he worked, moving her family many times on a moments' notice. In her younger years she loved gardening and canning. She and her husband hunted and cooked for many hunters in North Carolina after retirement. She loved the Lord and never missed an opportunity to tell others about Jesus. She read through her Bible yearly and loved many friends that she attended church with both at Cobbs Creek Baptist in Butler and Bethany Baptist Church, Mountain City, where she was a member.

Mildred loved her family and had a special love for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also had several special caregivers who helped to keep her wish of staying in the home to the end possible: Gloria Hathorn, Gloria Leveillee, Beverly Lowe, Luvena Erwin and Tom Erwin.

The family will receive family and friends at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2019 at Memorial Funeral Home in Elizabethton, TN with the service to follow at 1:00 p.m. Pastors Bryan Sheehan, her nephew, and Doug Hinshaw, a long time friend will be officiating. A graveside service and burial will follow the service at Butler Cemetery in Butler, TN. 1475 BUTLER - Mr. John David Greene, age 88, of Butler, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Waters of Roan Highlands following an extended illness.

John David was born in Bakersville, North Carolina to the late Charles Spurgon and Tina Dugger Greene. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Darrell Greene and Roy Greene and two grandsons, Keith Smith and Freddie Greene.

John David lived most of his life in Johnson County, Tennessee where he worked as a farmer, carpenter and logger. He loved being outdoors with his dogs. John David enjoyed the company of family and friends and discussing the Bible with them. He loved his church, Hope Christian Fellowship and all its members. He knew his Bible and loved talking about it and God's love.

John David was a United States Navy Veteran.

1476 BUTLER - Mrs. Patricia Dugger Vines of Butler, TN went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 1, 2018.

She was the daughter of the late Polly Jane and Glenn Dugger. Patricia was a devoted wife and mother and matriarch to an extraordinary family. Patricia was equally committed to the children of East Tennessee serving as a social worker and making a meaningful difference in the lives of children in this regional community for thirty-one years. Patricia's impact will be felt through generations to come. Her legacy will always be of a great and extraordinary wife and mother; her grandchildren and the lasting and meaningful impact that she has had on the children, the downtrodden and those less fortunate in this community.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Laura Bunting, Sarah Myatt, Connie Miller and her brother Clayton Dugger. 1477 BUTLER - Ralph W. McEwen, age 90, of Butler, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, February 4, 2016, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital with his family by his side.

Ralph was born in Johnson County, Tennessee to the late Jacob Wade McEwen and Ida Lee Lowe McEwen.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Ralph retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 45 years of service. He was a member of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church, where in the past he served as a Deacon and taught Sunday School. He was very hardworking man; he farmed, raised cattle, was an extraordinary gardener and was known as the "Tomato King" because he grew the best tomatoes!

Family was important to Mr. McEwen, he was a very loving and devoted husband and father, and his extended family also played an important role in his life. Ralph loved the outdoors and gardening and he loved his wife June's cooking so much! He loved being at home and believed in hard work.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 70 years, June McEwen, of the home; a daughter, Linda McEwen Cole and husband Harold, of Johnson City; a granddaughter, Rebecca Cole Allen and husband Rusty, of Raleigh, NC; a grandson, Chandler Allen, who was the light of his life, of Raleigh, NC; a sister, Kate Arrants-Stermer, of Butler; two special nephews, Dennis Stout, of Winchester, VA and Frank Murray of Stoney Creek. Several nieces and nephews, special neighbors and friends, Jack Slemp, Kenny Lahman, Eric Matherly, Junior McQueen, and Carolyn Lyon also survive.

A graveside service to honor the life of Mr. Ralph W. McEwen will be conducted at 3:30 PM on Monday, February 8, 2016, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Buddy Street and Rev. A.J. Potter, officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 2:30 PM on Monday, February 8, 2016, in the chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton.

1478 BUTLER - Raymond Hill, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 10, 2022, at his home in Butler, Tennessee. Born in Roan Mountain, Tennessee, he was the son of the late Floyd and Ruth Whitehead Hill. Raymond was a graduate of Hampton High School and later went on to obtain bachelor and masters degrees from East Tennessee State University. As a life-long educator, Raymond began his career as a teacher at a two-room school in Poga, Tennessee before moving on to spend 25 years as a teacher and assistant principal at Hampton High School. He also served as principal at Siam Middle School and Hampton Elementary School before transitioning to leadership roles at the Carter County Board of Education. He served as Assistant Director of Schools from 1997-1999 and ultimately served as Director of Schools from 1999 until his retirement in 2001. Raymond was inducted into the Carter County Educators Hall of Fame in 2019 in recognition of his contributions in educating thousands of Carter County children during his nearly 42 years of serving as a teacher, principal, coach, and mentor.

As a man of unwavering faith in God, Raymond was a member and deacon of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church in Butler, Tennessee. He previously was a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church in Roan Mountain, where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and music director. Raymond most recently commemorated 55 years as a member of the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge #566.

In addition to his work and church duties, Raymond served on the Northeast Community Credit Union Board of Directors for 28 years. During that time, he served 17 years as Vice Chairman and the last year as Chairman of the Board.

Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, as well as a brother, Eddie Hill. Survivors include his wife of nearly 48 years, Karen; two daughters, Susan and Lindsey, as well as a son-in-law, John Feathers. He is also survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Nicholas Kosco of Bradenton, Florida; his grandchildren: Reagan, Alyssa, and Jake Feathers and Makayla Dockery. Additional survivors include several nieces, nephews, and cousins; special niece and nephew LaGina and David Vaught; An honorary daughter, Jamie McQueen as well as special friends and travel companions, James “Monroe” Stevens and Sandra Forbes.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 14th, preceded by visiting hours from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton, Tennessee. Pastor Dennis Wilson officiating. a special eulogy will be delivered by Kevin Ward, and music will be provided by Bill Anderson. Those serving as pallbearers include: John Feathers, David Vaught, Junior McQueen, Jason McQueen, Eddie Lewis, Adam Morton, Greg Marlow, and Chris Pierce. Honorary pallbearers include: Bernie Hill, Nick Kosco, Kevin Ward, Dallas Williams, Bill Shoun, Jerry Bowers, his church family, Cobbs Creek Baptist Church, and members of the Northeast Community Credit Union Board of Directors. The Entombment services will be held on Thursday, December 15th at 1:00 p.m. at the Mausoleum of Faith at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton, Tennessee. A Masonic Service will be conducted by Roan Mountain Lodge # 566 following the funeral service.

He was born March 15, 1948 in Mountain City to the late Percy & Bonnie Bunton Campbell. He was a former employee of North American Rayon Corporation and retired from Colorworks.He attended Little Milligan Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter: Nora Lee Campbell and a sister: Caroline White.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years: Linda Whaley Campbell. A Daughter & Son-In-Law: Melissa (Darrell) Matheson. A Brother and sister-in-law: Jim (Claudette) Campbell. His Brothers-In-Law: Bob (Jane) Whaley, Luther Whaley, and Carl “Doodle” White, Several nieces and nephews.

1480 BUTLER - Ted R. Matherly, 86, Butler, passed away Saturday October 28, 2017 at his residence following an extended illness.

A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late James Blaine & Winnie Loretta Wagner Matherly. Ted served in the United States Air Force. He attended Watauga Academy and graduate from Johnson County High School. He also attended the University of Tennessee. He retired as Postmaster from the Butler Post Office after 27 years of service. Ted was a member of Roan Creek Masonic Lodge # 679, was one of the original members of the Butler Fire Department, a charter member of the Butler Puritan Club and was a member and deacon of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Raquel Patria (Pat) Ramon Matherly who died May 11, 2005 and by three sisters and three brothers. Ted loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was also an Atlanta Brave Fan.

1481 BUTLER - Virginia Lee 'Toots' Harmon, age 86, of Butler, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

She was born on April 11, 1933 to the late Martin and Crissie Grindstaff Smith. In addition to her parents, Toots was preceded in death by her husband, Gedar Harmon, who passed January 13, 2013; daughter and son-in-law, Patsy McNulty and husband Daniel; granddaughter, Brenda Gail Allen; sisters, Connie Smith, Geneva Stansberry; brothers, J.D. Smith and Carl David Smith and an infant brother and daughter-in-law, Kathy Harmon, great-grandson, James McNulty.

Toots worked at a chair factory for several years and also worked on their family farm. She loved to grow her own vegetables and especially enjoyed canning and preserving their food for winter months. Toots loved to play Bingo. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother who loved her family very much. She always enjoyed when her family and friends would come for visits.

Toots was a member of Sink Valley Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories include her children, Glenda Greer and husband Larry of Butler, TN, and Glenn Harmon of Butler, TN; sisters, Nell Harper and Judy Parson, all of PA; grandchildren, Annette Garland, Anita McNabe, Angela Mahala, Elizabeth Harmon, Crystal Gail Jacobs, Stacie Norris, Jamie Allen, Carl David Harmon; twenty four great grandchildren; eleven great-great grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews and many special friends and neighbors.

1482 BUTLER – Mary Alice Rainbolt Shaw, 98, Butler went home to be
with her Lord, Monday, March 14, 2022 in the Sycamore Shoals
Hospital. She was born October 12, 1923 in Stonega, Virginia to the
late David Franklin & Ethel Clawson Rainbolt.
She had lived most of her life in Carter County.
She was a formeremployee of NARC, Shadowline of Boone, NC and
Shirley’s Restaurant. Mrs Shaw was a member of Little Milligan Baptist Church where she had served
as a Sunday School Teacher for over 72 years. She spent her life faithfully serving the Lord and others,
leading many to accept Jesus into their hearts. She
enjoyed spending time with her family, studing the
Bible, and spent countless hours in her sewing room.
She also loved to sew. In addition to her parents, she
was preceded in death by her husband Marcus Shaw
who passed away June 17, 1984, by three sisters:
Lucille White, Ruth Williams and Susie Smith and
two brothers: John Rainbolt and Charles Rainbolt.

1483 BUTLER — Catherine D. Buchanan Johnson, age 64, of Butler, passed away at her home on Thursday, July 14, 2016.

Catherine was born in Carter County to the late Fin G. Buchanan and Mildred Calhoun Buchanan McCall.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother, David Buchanan; and her step father, Bob McCall.

Catherine was a registered nurse, specializing in Emergency Medicine and Nursing Management. She had worked locally with the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center and Mountain States Health Alliance. Her nieces and nephews were very special to her and she loved to shop with them whenever the opportunity arose. She and her husband, Howard, are both members of First Methodist Church in Elizabethton. She also served as Chaplin for the Order of the Eastern Star and was a graduate of Culinary School. In addition to shopping, she enjoyed cooking and crafting.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of 36 years, Howard W. Johnson, of the home; a brother, Michael Buchanan and wife Eleanor, of Frankfort, Illinois; her step children, Rob Johnson, of Ohio, Jennifer Maryanski, of Knoxville, Michael Johnson, of Indiana, and Rebecca Swing, of Wisconsin. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Mrs. Catherine D. Buchanan Johnson will be conducted at 12:30 PM on Monday, July 18, 2016, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Niles and Lena Onks. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Monday.

Charlene was born March 19, 1930 in Butler, TN to the late Luke Tester and Delores Cable Tester. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church. Charlene loved gardening, animals and she especially loved helping people.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Raleigh Moretz and Chalmas Laws, and one son Randall Laws.

1485 BUTLER — Chester "Tilley" Stout, 89, Butler, passed away Monday March 26, 2012, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late George and Elsie Nave Stout. He was a World War II Navy Veteran.

Mr. Stout graduated from East Tennessee State College and pursued predoctural studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He began his career in 1952 as an educator at Doe Elementary School, Mountain City, where he served as teacher and principal and basketball coach.

He furthered his career, beginning in 1962, as a college instructor in the Earth Science Department at East Tennessee State University, providing 38 years of service until his retirement in 2000.

He was an avid gardener.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Rainbolt Hilton Stout, January 28, 2000.

He attended Little Doe Baptist Church.

Survivors include three children: Gary Hilton, Butler, and Hilda Stout Dugger, of the home, and Mona Stout, Johnson City; Two Grandchildren: Tori Stout, Johnson City, and Eric Stout and his wife, Veronica, of Elizabethton.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, in Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton, with Mr. Dennis Hamm officiating.

Interment will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park, Johnson City. Military Honors and Pallbearers will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. Mrs. Wolfe was a member of the Sugar Grove Baptist Church and she enjoyed sewing, gardening and basket weaving.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Nat and Pearl Whaley Deloach. She was a retired employee of Levi Strauss, Mountain City. She was a member of the Little Doe Baptist Church, where she was a former member of the church choir.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, W.H. Garland, October 21, 2005; by three brothers, Manuel, Robert and Spencer Deloach; and two sisters: Pauline Poole and Ina Mae Deloach.

Survivors include a daughter & son-in-law: Elizabeth & Junior McQueen, Butler; A Son: Bobby Garland, Butler. 1488 BUTLER — Gedar G. Harmon, age 86 of Butler, Tennessee, went home to be with his Lord, Sunday January 13, 2013, in the Johnson County Community Hospital.

He was born March 9, 1926 to the late Virgil and Minnie Stout Harmon. In addition to his parents, Gedar was preceded in death by a daughter Patsy McNulty; granddaughter Brenda Gail Allen; sisters: Mamie Powell, Ruby Proffitt, Della Oliver, Florecne Proffitt, Bonnie Stout, Berna Lee McIntosh, Ella Fair Harmon, Wyona Malcolm and Billie Jean Hackney; brothers: Russell W. Harmon and Ranzo Harmon.

Gedar enjoyed reading his bible, being outdoors, hunting and fishing, working puzzle books and sitting on the porch watching hummingbirds.

Gedar was a faithful man and was a member of Sink Valley Baptist Church.

Gedar loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them. He will be deeply missed, especially by his special Little Boy Bandit.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Virginia (Toots) Smith Harmon; daughter and son-in-law: Glenda and Larry Greer; son and daughter-in-law: Glenn and Kathy Harmon of Butler; son-in-law: Daniel McNulty of Johnson City; sisters: Villa Sparks and husband Mark Tipton N.C.; eight grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren and six great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

1489 BUTLER — Larry Ray Smith, 73, Butler, passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2016, following a brief illness.

He was born November 25, 1942, in Johnson County to the late Walter Ray and Ruby Reece Smith. Larry graduated from Hampton High School in 1960 and later from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor's degree in forestry. He spent many years working as a railroad engineer and retired from CSX Railroad. Larry loved horticulture, music events and traveling with his family.

He was very proud of his hometown and had a passion for the history of Old Butler. Larry was a member of the Butler Ruritan Club and active participant in Old Butler Days. He was an avid University of Tennessee football fan and took great pleasure in his role as an usher at Neyland Stadium. He was a long time member of the Elizabethton Church of Christ.

Survivors include his children, Dr. Toby Ray Smith and his wife, Dee-Dee of Brentwood, TN and Jody Lynn Smith of Johnson City, TN; his beloved grandchildren, Abby, Beau, and Dorothy Lane; he also has several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his wife of 26 years, Dorothy Whitehead Smith; and his older brother, Ted Smith.

Services will be conducted on Thursday, February 4, 2016, in Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton, TN with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. followed by the funeral service at 7 p.m. Mr. Roby Ellis will be the minister officiating. Entombment will be in the Mausoleum of Peace, Happy Valley Memorial Park on Friday, at 11 a.m.

A native of Old Butler, she was a daughter of the late Herbert and Matilda Burton Tucker. Louise was a 1938 graduate of Watauga Academy. She was associated with her husband for several years in the operation of Pleasant's General Store, Butler.
She was an active member of the Little Doe Baptist Church until her illness. She was a former Sunday School Teacher, active in the W.M.U. and former Treasurer.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years Karl Pleasant, five brothers and two sisters.
Survivors include a daughter: Trula Haley and her fiancé, Sid Smithdeal, Butler, and Two Sons: Dick Pleasant and his fiancée, Dr. Teresa Garland, Jonesborough, and Mike Pleasant, Butler. A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Ode and Fay Dugger Campbell. Mrs. Trivette was a graduate of the Watauga Academy, and spent the majority of her life as a homemaker lovingly taking care of her husband and children. She was a devoted member and past Sunday school teacher at Meadowview Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Vance L. Trivette, Sr. and an infant son, Wesley Trivette.

She is survived by two daughters, Linda Harrison and husband, Elwin "Sonny," and Carolyn Arnold and husband, Ross, all of Mountain City; two sons, Lowell Trivette and wife, Glenda, of Elk Park, NC, and Vance L. 1492 BUTLER — Verda Graybeal, age 73, of Butler, Tennessee, went to be with her Lord on Friday, January 8, 2016, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

She was born on November 20, 1942, daughter of the late Fred and Lona Stout Elliott.

In addition to her parents, Verda was preceded in death by her son, Timothy Graybeal, who passed March 11, 2010 and her sister, Betty Phillips.

Verda was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She loved visiting and spending time with neighbors and friends. Verda loved summertime, raising a vegetable garden and growing beautiful flowers. She was adored by all who knew her and will be dearly missed.

Verda was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Her memory and life will be cherished by her husband and best friend, Bobby Graybeal; son, Tommy Tolley; brother, Earnest and Constance Elliott; sister, Mary Shepherd; step sister, Mary Jane Sexton and husband Joe; daughter-in-law and mother of Verda's grandchildren, Angie Perry Graybeal; grandchildren, Shonae Graybeal and Hunter Graybeal; nieces, Joni Shepherd, Lori Deloach and Gloria South; nephews, Marty Elliott and Barry Elliott; many more special nieces and nephews and many, many special friends.

A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late Roby & Maude Smith Stout. He was a retired Transportation Supervisor with the Johnson County School System. He was a member and Deacon of the Little Doe Baptist Church, Butler. He served in the United States Navy.

He was a fifty-eight year member of the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge # 679, Member and Past Patron of Butler Chapter #218, Order of Eastern Star. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Shriner. He was a member of Jericho Temple, Kingsport.

He was preceded in death by a brother: Edward Stout.

Fred was an avid UT Vol Football Fan.

1494 BUTLER — Klan Butler “Jiggs” Pleasant, 79, 649 Old Highway 67, Butler, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 16, 2004, at James H. Quillen V.A. Hospital. A lifelong resident of the Doevile Community, he was the youngest son of the “O.K.” Pleasant family. Jiggs was born May 29, 1925, to the late Roderick Butler and Vena Alice Pierce Pleasant. He was a member of Little Doe Baptist Church and retired as an electrician from North American Rayon Corporation. Mr. Pleasant served in the South Pacific in the Navy as a motor Mechanist. He received the Philippine Operation Medal, a Victory Bronze Star, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal during World War II. He served in the Johnson County Rescue Squad for twelve years. He was preceded in death by a son, Randy Butler Pleasant; two sisters: Ola Kyte and Ova Stalcup; five brothers: Kyle, King, Karl, Kale and Keys Pleasant. Survivors include his wife, Faye Robinson Pleasant, of the home; two Daughters and Sons-In-Law: Diana and Earl Howard Jr., of Shady Valley, Evelyn and Mark Thomas, of Meadowview, VA.; four grandchildren: Wayne Thomas and wife, Guia; and Tuesday Pope and her husband, Nat, Randy Pleasant Jr. and Joseph Howard; One Sister: Ona Long, of Butler; Two Sisters-In-Law and One Brother-In-Law; Several Nieces and Nephews. A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 20, 2004, in the Little Doe Baptist Church with Rev. Kreg Smith and Dr. Willie Malone officiating. Music will be provided by the Church Choir. Pallbearers will be Truett Pleasant, Dick Pleasant, David Pleasant and Mike Pleasant. Honorary Pallbearers will be his Church Family, Friends and Neighbors. Graveside Services will follow at Rambo Cemetery with the Johnson County Honor Guard providing military honors. 1496 BUTLER, Feb. 11 – Funeral services for Daniel R. Fletcher, 79, who died yesterday morning, at his home here, will be held this afternoon at 2:30 from the home. Rev. Jon H. Davis will officiate. Burial will be in the Fletcher cemetery.
The deceased was a member of Cobb's Creek Baptist church.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs. Rebecca Blevins, of Johnson City; Mrs. Stella Robinson, Mrs. Lucy Campbell and Miss Madama Fletcher, of Butler; one son, Stanley Fletcher, of Idaho; also 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

1497 BUTLER, TN - Martha Lou Reece Vines, age 80, of Butler, TN, passed away on Saturday, July 17, 2021. She was a daughter of the late William E. Red and Okie Opal Campbell Reece and was born in Butler, TN on April 3, 1941. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rex Carroll Vines and three brothers, DW Reece, Richard Reece and Cecil Reece.

Martha was a homemaker and attended Eternal Life Baptist Church when she was able and loved spending time with her family.

Those left to cherish her memories include seven children, William Michael Vines (Lisa) of Elizabethton, Carol Renea Vines (David Engle) of Johnson City, Daphne Dale Johnson (Greg) of Greeneville, Charles David Vines of Butler, Benjamin Scott Vines (Maricela) of Elizabethton, Kristy Dawn Everett (Michael) of Johnson City and Toni Rachae Ruiz (Carlos) of Elizabethton; seven siblings, Bobby Reece, Elwanda Shupe, Wayne Reece, Leonard Reece, Sherry Hicks, Anita Blackwell and Karen Yates; and twenty-nine grandchildren. Numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to celebrate the life of Martha Lou Reece Vines will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM prior to the service.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 21, 2021 at the Vines Cemetery on Whaley Town Road, Butler. Active pallbearers will be Walter Vines, Chris Timmons, Michael Everett, Carlos Ruiz, Adam Johnson and Jacob Sweeney. Honorary pallbearers will be her brothers and grandchildren.

ARNOLD, Delmer C., 74, went to be with his Lord at 12:47 a.m. on Sunday, April 30, 1995. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Mary A. Minopoli-Arnold of Naples, Italy; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Tom Roubal; son and daughter-in-law, Eddie W. and Dianne; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and John Delfrari; daughter and son-in-law, Dianna and Richard Rosler; 12 grandchildren and two grandchildren’s spouses; and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his sister, Berneice Matherly; brothers, Park, James and Elwood Arnold of Johnson County, TN; as well as a brother-in-law and family from Italy who live in Tucson. Born in Johnson County, TN, he served in North Africa and Italy with the 5th Army Medical Corps during World War II and was awarded two bronze stars. Living in Tucson for 48 years, he was employed as manager of Mulcahy Lumber Company and retired from Grant Road Lumber Company. He was awarded “Outstanding Salesman of the Year’in Tucson prior to retirement. Services will be at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. Park Ave., at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 1995 with Dr. Bill Parker officiating.

1499 Bynum McCoury, 86, formerly of U.S. Hwy. 19E, Roan Mountain, died Friday, October 1, 2004, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, TN.
Mr. McCoury was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Montie and Savannah Callahan McCoury. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mabel Louise McCoury, nine brothers, Bernie, Walter, Ira, Ernest, Homer, Ray, George, Warren and William, and three sisters, Rosie, Vernie and Lucy.
Mr. McCoury was a member of Roan Mountain First Baptist Church and a member of the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge. He was retired from the Carter County Sheriff's Department and Roan Mountain State Park. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home or other times at the residence of his son, Jerry McCoury, 120 Old Rock Quarry Road, Roan Mountain. The graveside service and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 5, at Freeman Cemetery, Roan Mountain.

1500 Byrl Lester Clark, 96, fought the good fight of faith and left his Earthly home and moved his forwarding address to Heaven on January 26, 2023. He was born on June 29, 1926, to the late Arthur and Nola Clark in Hampton, TN. Byrl was a proud US Navy Veteran during World War II. In 1944, he left high school at the age of 17 and voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a Seaman on the USS Atlanta, which was the first American ship to bomb Japanese Homelands during WWII. Byrl was retired from North American Rayon (33 years) and East Tennessee State University (10 years). He and Kansas enjoyed many years of retirement traveling with family and friends. Also, he enjoyed tending to his cattle, gardens and his Clark Family Farm, while enjoying his many beloved dogs.

He is survived by his loving wife of 6 years, Carolyn; his daughter, Linda Abel (Larry Sr, his loving son-in-law); his son, Byrl Clark, Jr and his son Jeff Clark; his grandchildren, Larry Abel, Jr (Kim), Deanna Abel Johnson, Chris Clark, Joy Abel, Kelsey Johnson, Amanda Clark, Keaton Johnson, Jessica Clark Madden, Beckett Clark, Gabriella Clark and Baylen Clark; his stepchildren; Angel Wilson (Adam), BJ Payne, Michael Payne (April) and step grandchildren Maura Trice (Tim), Eddie Trice, Gabby Trice, Raymond Wilson, Makayla Payne, Madison Payne, Alyssa Payne, Lee Payne and Taylor Smith and several special nephews, nieces and cousins and a two very special friends who were like daughters; Judy Broyles and Judy Herrell Stocton. Byrl is preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Kansas Garland Clark; his brother, Robert Clark; daughter-in-law, Linda Clark; sister-in-law Ida Lee Kelly (Chuck) and brother-in-law, Bobby Garland (Tommie Sue) and a baby brother, Arvel Clark and a baby sister, Mildred Clark.

Byrl was a proud member of Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church in Elizabethton, TN. He was honored and proud to be a member of his church. One of the many highlights of his year was the honor to carry the American flag during the Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day services at his church, where he will carry one last time during his Celebration of Life Service at Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church. Receiving of family and friends will be Sunday January 29 from 5:00-7:00pm with the service following at 7:00. The Graveside services will take place at Berry Cemetery in Simerly Creek on Monday, January 30 at 11:00am. The services will be officiated by Pastor Randy Johnson and Pastor Mark Potter. Music will be provided by Joy Abel, Rob Montgomery, Teresa McKinney, Jim Matheson, Jeff Snyder and church musicians.

Pallbearers will be Larry Abel Jr, Chris Clark, BJ Payne, Adam Wilson, Michael Payne, Joel Street, Zeke Tolley Jr., Kevin Kelly and Joseph Smithdeal.
