1201 Billy Wayne Fletcher, age 60, of Butler, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2016. He was born on September 4, 1956 to Ina Pearl Fletcher and the late Millard Fletcher.
Billy worked in construction for many years. He was a kind, caring and loving man who was always there to lend a helping hand to family, friends or anyone that needed help, without any questions. He loved animals, especially horses.
Those left to cherish his memories include his mother, Ina Pearl Fletcher; his children: Kevin Potter, Dennis Fletcher and wife Jessica, Cody Fletcher and Shelly Atwood; sisters: Sharon Church and husband Walter, Jean Osborne and husband Frank and Jane Worman and husband Andy; grandchildren: Adrian, Zane, Caleb and Tommy; nephews: illy Reed Fletcher and Brent Whitehead; and many, many special friends and neighbors.
Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, December 26, 2016 at the Fletcher Family Cemetery, located on Sink Valley Road, Butler, TN with Pastor Harvey White ad Pastor Dan Wood officiating. 1205 Birdie H. Garland, 80, of 2614 Browns Mill Road, Johnson City died Friday, October 31, 2008, in the Appalachian Christian Village.

Mrs. Garland was a native of Buladean, NC, a former resident of Roan Mountain and had lived in Johnson City most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Roosevelt and Etta Moffitt Hughes.

She was a devoted mother and homemaker to her family.

Mrs. Garland attended Cove Creek School in Roan Mountain and was a former employee of North American Rayon, Elizabethton, TN, and North Electric Company, Gray, TN.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by: her loving husband, Robert Samuel Garland, in 1997; a sister, Barbara Hughes; three brothers, Clay Hughes, Roosevelt Hughes Jr. and a infant brother, Cecil.

Survivors include: a daughter, Marliese Garland Booshu, of Johnson City; a son, Robert Michael and his wife, Deborah Garland, of Seymour, IN; one grandson, Noah Booshu, of Johnson City; two sisters, Margie and her husband, Auburn Keeter, of Harrison, AR, Nada and her husband, Garnie Miller, of Temple, TX; three brothers, Virl and his wife, Jean Hughes, of Rogersville, TN, Carroll "Jack" Hughes, of Elizabethton, and Larry Hughes, of Roan Mountain; numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

The funeral service for Birdie H. Garland will be conducted at 3 PM Monday, November 3, 2008, from the Morris-Baker Funeral Home South Chapel. Rev. Bob Edmonds will officiate. The graveside service will follow at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

1206 Birth and death dates are approximate. He was the son of Wilborn G Campbell and Elizabeth B Morton Campbell. He was the husband of Nancy J Simerly Campbell, also buried in this cemetery.

He was the grandson of Zachariah Campbell, Jr. and the great-grandson of Zachariah Campbell Sr., an early settler along the Watauga River, in the area by about 1780, certainly by 1790.

Alex was a private in Co. B of the 4th Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, U.S.A. (Union). He was among those taken POW at McMinnville, Tenn. by Confederate forces. Several members of the 13th Regiment Tenn. Vol. Cav., U.S.A. and the 4th Regiment were involved in the Bridge Burnings that were planned by William Carter and personally approved by Abraham Lincoln. See the book, History of the Thirteenth Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, U.S.A. by Scott and Angel (1903, reprint 1987) for a discussion of the Union loyalties of Carter County, especially the Hampton area. Mr. Bill Deloach, 55, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, June 15, 2014 at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital. He was the son of the Charlotte Burrow Deloach of Elizabethton and the late William Buddy Deloach.
Mr. Deloach was employed by Volunteer Floor Covering, Roan Mountain, and was of the Baptist Faith. He loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren and was interested in old cars.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 10 years, Michelle Malone Deloach, of the home; a daughter, Leah Deloach, Johnson City; a step-daughter, Trista Freeman, of the home; a step-son, Codey Carter, of the home; two grandchildren, Hannah Norris, the light of his life, of the home; Payton Norris, Johnson City; a sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Rick Walker, Elizabethton; a nephew, Travis Walker, Elizabethton; a special uncle, Roger Burrow, Elizabethton; his special mother-in-law, Evelyn Malone, Bluff City; and several other aunts and uncles. Two special friends, Ricky Hatley and Keith "Myron" Montgomery also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Deloach will be conducted on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Ben Sheets officiating. Music will be under the direction of Joel Crisp. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, on Wednesday prior to the service, at his home, or at the home of his mother, at other times.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Myron Montgomery, Rick Hatley, Kenny Bouton, Rob Miller, Chris Blumenstock, and Randy Cross. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Depew and his fellow employees of Volunteer Floor Covering.

Lois Edna Isaacs Henson

Mrs. Lois Edna Henson, 82, of 818 Medical Park Drive, Mountain City, Tenn., died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2007, at Mountain City Care Center.

She was born in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Enoch and Martha Ann Cornett Isaacs.

She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. She loved traveling.

Survivors include three sons, Baxter Henson and wife, Debbie, of Charleston, S.C., Wayne Henson and wife, Jane, of Jackson, Tenn., and Gary Henson and wife, Teresa, of Indianapolis, Ind.; two sisters, Blanche Presnell of Zionville and Shirley Sanders of Lenoir; two brothers, John Isaacs of Sugar Grove and Joe Isaacs of Lenoir; and a special friend, Janice Hawkins. She is also survived by eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Henson; two brothers, Rom and Ben Isaacs; and one sister, Wanda Smith.

Burial followed in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens.

1215 BISHOP, Va. — Danny Michael Reynolds, age 62, passed away Friday March 7, 2008. He was a former resident of Dickenson County and had resided in Tazewell County for the last 43 years. He was of the Freewill Baptist Faith, a retired coal miner and a member of the UMWA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Reynolds and Evelyn Kiser Reynolds.

He is survived by his wife Ruby Deloach Reynolds of Bishop Va.; son, Mike Reynolds of Bishop, Va.; granddaughter, Ashley Reynolds of Tazewell, Va.; sisters, Martha Deloach of Lenoir, N.C., Alice McCoy of Cosby, Tenn., Patsy Moore of St. Paul, Va., Betty Stevens of St. Paul Va.; Nettie Bollick of North Carolina, Sandra Robinson of Roanoke Va.; and brother: Lee Reynolds of Virginia.

Pallbearers will be friends and family.

Honorary pallbearers will be J.J. Deloach, Danny Deloach, Lawrence Deloach, Bill Deloach and Mike Hensley.

The family received friends Sunday March 9, 2008 at 6:00 p.m. in the Mullins Funeral Home Chapel followed with a service at 7:00 p.m. with Lester Mullins officiating.

Funeral services were conducted on Monday March 10, 2008 at 2:00 p.m., with Darrell Long officiating. He was laid to rest in the Deloach Family Cemetery RT 3 Clintwood, Va.

1216 BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C. -- Ross Taylor Williams, 87, 35 Meeks Road, Ridgecrest, N.C., died Friday, July 14, 2000.

Mr. Williams was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church and a former member of Unaka Avenue Baptist Church in Johnson City, Tenn., where he served as deacon for many years. He retired from Tennessee Eastman in 1975 after 37 years, and was a World War II Veteran and served in the 70th Coast Artillery, U.S. Army, in the Pacific Theater.

Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Bernice Williams, January 18, 2000; three brothers, Joe, Frank and Harry; and a sister, Nora Alice McAnnis.

Survivors include his son, Dallas P. Williams, daughter-in-law, Debbie Williams, and granddaughter, Nichole Gibbs, all of Asheville; granddaughter, Erin Gaudette and her husband, Greg, and great-grandson, Gage Taylor Gaudette, all of Springfield, Mass.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Wanda Taylor, Elizabethton, Tenn., James R. and Peggy Taylor, Salisbury, and Virginia and Nat Sams, Johnson City, Tenn.; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 16, in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home with Pastor David Webb officiating. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday, July 17, at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.

1217 BLACKSBURG, SC -- David Tolley, 80, of 126 South Burnt Chimney Road, passed away Friday, April 29th, 2022, at his residence.
Born in Relief, NC, he was the widower of Delores Tolley and the son of the late Fred Tolley and Hassie Horton Tolley. Mr. Tolley previously worked as a supervisor in the mining industry. He enjoyed working in his yard, reading, and watching racing shows.
Mr. Tolley is survived by two sons, Darrell Tolley and Jeff Tolley; two daughters, Tresa Tolley and Patty Settle; one brother, George Tolley of Mountain City, TN; one sister, Linda Light of Johnson City, TN; one grandchild, Aaron Hess (Jian) of Glen Burnie, MD; numerous nieces and nephews, and his dog, Tucker, whom he loved dearly!
In addition to his wife and his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Michael Tolley, AZ (Bud) Tolley, Dorothy Musick, Mildred Whitson, and Jean Little.
No services are planned at the present time.

1218 BLACKSBURG, VA - Jewell Christine Martin passed from this Earth into the arms of Jesus on October 1, 2019.


Jewell was called by many names - Billie, Mom, Mamaw, Mrs. Martin - and she was loved by many people. She was born on May 18, 1930 in Washington County, TN. She married John M. Martin on August 7, 1950 and together they raised three children, Patricia, Kathy, and Tim.

Jewell loved Jesus, her family, her neighbors, and her long-time church, Boones Creek Baptist Church. She was always generous to those in need and prayed daily for others.

John, a member of the US Air Force, Jewell, and their children lived in many places, including Washington, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina as well as Japan. The family settled back in East Tennessee in 1968 and lived there until 2017 when Jewell moved to Blacksburg, VA to be near family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, on January 29, 2014.

She is survived by: her children, Patricia and husband John Mattox, Kathy and her husband Duane McIntyre, and Tim and his wife Faye Martin; her grandchildren, Erin and her husband Jonathan Couch, Chris Stinnett, Paul and his wife Belinda McIntyre, Andrea and her husband Matthew Pendleton, Elizabeth and her husband Dan Skidmore, Matthew and his wife Jessica Martin, and Hannah Martin; her great-grandchildren, Cara Couch, Adeline Stinnett, Chloe Couch, Kambry McIntyre, Abby McIntyre, Henry Pendleton, Trey Couch, Gwendolyn Skidmore, and Hunter Pendleton; her sister, Dorthy Toohey and husband Don; her brother, Tom Tilson and his wife Shirley; and several nieces and nephews.

The family of Jewell Martin will receive friends from 1:30 PM until 2:00 PM Sunday, October 6, 2019, at Morris-Baker. The funeral will follow at 2:00 PM with Rev. Jonathan Couch officiating. The committal service will immediately follow at Washington County Memory Gardens.

The lifelong resident of Pierce County was a homemaker. She was a member of Rehobeth Baptist Church and the Ruth Sunday School Class.

SURVIVORS: her husband of 67 years, Guthrie C. Davis; a daughter and son-in-law, Clarice and Edsel DeLoach of Blackshear; three grandchildren, Lynn Holton and June
LaGrue, both of Brunswick, and Tommy Hinson of Nahunta; six great-grandchildren and other relatives.

1220 Blaine Buck, Sr., 95, Elizabethton passed away Saturday, January 14, 2012 in the Hermitage Health Center.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Milton B. "Pig" & Osa Bell Redmond Buck.

He was a graduate of Happy Valley High School and attended Tulane University in New Orleans.

He served in the Army Air Force as a crew chief-Pilot on a B-17 & B-29 Bombers during World War II. He flew several missions over Japan and on one flight his plane was short down. He earned many medals for his five and half years of service.

Blaine was employed at North American Rayon Corporation for over 40 years where he was a Supervisor in the Knitting Department.

Blaine was an inventor, he got a U.S. Patient and wrote a book. He was part-owner in a printing Company on West G. Street for several years.

He was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church of Elizabethton and the Fair-Morgan Sunday School Class. He was active in the Boy Scouts for many years.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Mary Lee Merritt Buck who died October 17, 2004 and two sisters: Ann Buckles and Kathryn Lacey.

Survivors include his son: David B. Buck, Jr., of the home and formerly of Talbott, Tenn. A Brother & Sister-in-Law: Jack and Nancy Buck and their two children: Mike & Sandy.

Graveside Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 18, 2012 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday will be: Joel Briggs, Mack Merritt, Kenneth Nave, Terry Pierce, R.L. Hambrick and Ken Hughes. David Jr. would like to express a special "Thank You" to the staff of Appalachian Christian Village and a big "Thank You" to the Staff of Hermitage Health Care and also to the Staff of Caris Health Care for the excellent care that was received. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

1221 Blaine Greer, 83, 281 Timothy Branch Road, Butler, Tennessee, passed away Friday, July 23, 2004 at the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness. He was a native of Johnson County, Tennessee, born April 18, 1921 to the late David Marshall Greer and Bertha Rambo Greer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Courtner-Greer, who passed away May 2002, three brothers and five sisters. He retired from Summers-Taylor Construction and was also a retired farmer. He had attended Bethel Baptist Church. He was a World War II Veteran having served in the United States Army.
Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy Greer, Norfolk, Virginia and Beulah Carr, Elizabethton, Tennessee; one brother, Dolphus Greer, Orlando, Florida; several nieces and nephews and a special friend, Mae Robinson, Butler, Tennessee.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at 11 a.m. from the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home Chapel with Richard Stout and Daniel Thomas officiating.
Military graveside services and burial followed in Sunset Memorial Park and was accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard.
Active pallbearers were Dean Jones, Harless Cox, Ronnie Greer, Tracey Greer, Jerry Courtner and Jack Courtner.
Honorary pallbearers were Mark McEwen and Daniel McEwen.

1222 Blaine Hartley, 100, of Elizabethton, passed away on Friday, August 31, 2018, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. He was a son of the late Letcher Ruben and Virdie Fletcher Hartley and was born in Butler, Tenn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cora June Pleasant Hartley; his oldest son, Blaine Edward Hartley; two sisters, Florence Hartley and Beatrice Baines Ketchem; a brother, Jonathan Hartley; a sister-in-law, Betty Jo Hartley; and three brothers-in-law, Herman Howard, Bill Kemp and James Baines.
Mr. Hartley was a decorated veteran of the United States Army, having served his country during WWII and receiving the Purple Heart. He loved to work in the garden, and on old cars, and enjoyed being outdoors. He was committed to his faith, and was known for his honesty and integrity. He was a member of Hunter Memorial Baptist Church.
Those left to cherish his memory include three children, Evelyn Hartley Hawk (Clayton) of Elizabethton, Barbara Shipley (Ronald) of Huntersville, N.C., and Dr. Gale Hartley (Leslie) of Mountain City; four brothers, James Hartley of Knoxville, Roby Hartley (Ethel) of Maryville, Kenneth Hartley (Jeanne) of Elizabethton and Martin Hartley (Wanda) of Knoxville; two sisters, Ruth Howard of Williamsburg, Va., and Margaret Kemp of Portland, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Ann Hartley of Soddy-Daisy; nine grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Mr. Hartley was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 2, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Dr. Gale Hartley officiating. Music was under the direction of John Brookshire, Chris Cain, Kyle Smith, Doug Hartley, Neal Hartley and John Hartley. The family received friends in the funeral home chapel from 1:30 until 3 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service. Friends may also call at the home of his daughter, Evelyn Hawk, at other times. The graveside service and interment was conducted on Tuesday, September 4, at 1:30 p.m. at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Ron Owens delivering a eulogy. Military Honors were provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers were his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers were the Pastor and Deacons of Hunter Memorial Baptist Church.

1223 Blaine O Stout, 90, of Mountain City, TN, passed away peacefully December 23rd, 2022 after a period of declining health. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He was born in Mountain City August 1, 1932, to Stacey and Hazel Stout. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Phillippi Stout and his brother, Bill Stout.

After marrying Elizabeth, his high school sweetheart, Blaine spent four years in the Air Force stationed in Salina, KS and Swindon, England. Upon returning to the states, they settled in Boone, NC where they raised their three sons. Blaine worked for Maymead Block Company for nine years and eventually retired in 1997 after a thirty-year career from Hound Ears Country Club. While living in Boone, Blaine attended flight school in Hickory and was a licensed pilot. He and Elizabeth were active members of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Boone. In 1999, Blaine and Elizabeth moved back to Mountain City to enjoy their retirement years where they became members of First Baptist Church of Mountain City.

Those left to cherish his memory are sons and daughters-in-law: David and Debbie Stout of Boone, NC, Donald and Patricia Stout of Mars Hill, NC and Steven and Debbie Stout of Hendersonville, NC; grandchildren: Daniel Stout, Sarah Block and husband David, Kelsey Condon and husband Jack, Kristen Stout, Kimberly Stout, Michael Stout and wife Heather and Joseph Stout and wife Jenny; Great-grandchildren: Henry and Colette Block, Walter and Merrill Condon, Erik Stout; Sisters-in law, Brenda Stout and Lorraine Westrick and husband Dick; Brother-in-law Ralph Phillippi; and his special four-legged friend, his cat Tigger.

1224 Blanche Bateman Heaton, born in 1927 in her grandparents’ house on the banks of the Doe River in Roan Mountain, Tennessee, died peacefully at her home on April 24, 2021. Other than spending some of her adolescent years in Swannanoa and Robbinsville, North Carolina, she considered herself a lifelong resident of Roan Mountain where she lived with Warren Heaton, her husband of 64 years until his death in 2011. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in law: Will and Debra Heaton of Lakeland, TN and Larry and Kenny Lou Heaton of Roan Mountain, her grandson Adam Heaton, and step-grandson Nick Street, his wife Celia, and son Sam, and great grandsons Dustin and Damon Heaton, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom she loved and cherished dearly. She was predeceased by her grandson Austin Heaton, her step-granddaughter Aimee Street, her brother, Carl Bateman, and her parents Vernon O. and Frankie Bateman.

An exceptional athlete, she was a member of Cloudland’s championship girls’ basketball team. She was known by her family to be an excellent and adventurous cook, a warm hostess, a wise counselor, a loving mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend, who was also passionate about her dogs, her cats, and her coffee.

She had an unbreakable bond with the mountains of East Tennessee, and she loved noting the seasonal changes, and being a part of nature in her vegetable garden, her flowers, or walking among the rhododendron gardens in full bloom on the top of Roan Mountain. Her favorite scripture she desired shared with everyone summarizes her life and can be found in the first two verses of Psalms 121: I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord which made heaven and earth.

Mrs. Heaton was a faithful member of Roan Mountain United Methodist Church and the Roan Mountain United Methodist Women, where she was active as a church leader and advisor until her illness in the last few years.

The family request any memorial donations be made to Roan Mountain United Methodist Church, 307 Johnson St., Roan Mountain, TN 37687. Because of COVID regulations and concerns, a private graveside service will be held by the immediate family only, with burial at Roan View Cemetery in Roan Mountain with Reverend Dennis Milhorn officiating.

1225 Blanche Freeman Hubbard, 92, 1709 Scenic Drive, Johnson City , went to be with her Lord and Savior, September 8, 2005 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Mrs. Hubbard was a native of Carter County and had lived most of her life in Johnson City and was a daughter of the late Dollie Arnett Freeman and Henry C. Freeman. She was a loving wife, mother, and mamaw.

Mrs. Hubbard was a homemaker and enjoyed hardening, quilting and making apple butter. Mrs. Hubbard was a former employee of the American Bemberg Corporation, North American Rayon and Leon-Ferenbach. She attended the Grace Baptist Church in Johnson City.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Plummer Hubbard; three sisters, Essie Tester, Pauline Sapp and Francis Willis; one half sister, Maude Miller; four brothers, James Freeman, David E. Freeman, Frank Freeman and Marion Freeman; and one half brother, John Freeman. 1226 Blanche McGuire Harmon, 92, of Valdese, went to her heavenly home after a brief illness at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.

She was originally from Beech Mountain Community in Elk Park, Avery County, NC. She was born on March 13, 1917, the daughter, and the last child of George Washington McGuire, Jr. and Safrona Alice Trivette. She was a retired upholstery sewer for Hancock and Moore Furniture Company of Hickory. Blanche was a talented quilter, she loved her family heritage, loved a great story, and she loved her children and family. She was a member of Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church, Elk Park, N.C. She was preceded in death by a son, Steve Harmon, a casualty of the Vietnam War, and two grandsons, Tony Preston Church and Matthew Paul Duncan.

Survivors include her children, Lois Church and husband Chester of Connelly Springs, Wayne Harmon and wife Dolly of Butler, TN, Sam Harmon and wife Glenda of Elk Park, N.C., Larry Joe Harmon and wife Bernice of Morganton, David Harmon and wife Carolyn of Clermont, FL, Sally Harmon of Burnsville, NC, Freddie Harmon and Annette Chapman of Drexel, and Frieda Duncan of Valdese and husband David J. Duncan, pastor of Glen Apline United Methodist Church; she is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday September 2, 2009 at Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church, where the body will lie in state one hour prior to the service. Officiating will be Rev. Richard Jones, Rev. Dennis Church, and Rev. David Duncan. Interment will follow at Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

She was born in Forest City, North Carolina, daughter of the late James Milton and Florence Kate Hall Roland. Blanche was a homemaker and member of the Boone Trail Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, G.L. "Fay" Boy, in 1981; three brothers; and a sister.

Survivors include: three daughters and two sons-in-law, Daris B. and Rev. Dale Martin, of Radford, Virginia, Joyce and B.L. "Dick" Hamilton, of Bristol, Betty Ann Boy, of Gray; two sons and a daughter-in-law, J.W. Boy of Gray, George E. and Laura D. Boy, of Johnson City; six grandchildren, Lisa Phipps, Lori Hamilton Dykes, Darlene Lane, George Robby Boy, Christopher E. Boy and Jonathan K. A funeral service is scheduled for Friday, November 7, 2008, at 2:00 p.m. in the North Chapel of the Morris-Baker Funeral Home under the direction of Dr. Paul Lane. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until time of service.

1228 Blanche Stonecipher Hill, age 88, of Elizabethton, TN, formerly of Nebo, NC and Hampton, TN, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at the Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.
She was a daughter of the late Coy C. Greene and Nora B. Guy Greene. Though born in Avery County, NC, she spent her entire childhood in Carter County. After spending many years in McDowell County, NC caring for underprivileged children, she returned to Carter County in 1991. She has remained an inactive member of the Nebo First Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Albert Stonecipher; her second husband, William D. Hill; one son, Barry Stonecypher; five sisters, Violet Lyons, Ella Whitehead, Betty Owens, Mary Isabelle Greene, Modest Creasey; and two brothers, Edgar Greene and William T. Greene.
A service to honor the life of Blanche Stonecipher Hill will be conducted at 7 PM on Tuesday, September 22, 2015 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10 AM on Wednesday, September 23rd at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

1229 Blane Blevins, 76, died Tuesday at HCA Putnam Community Hospital following a long illness.
A native of Shady Valley, Tenn., he moved to Pomona Park in 1962 from Bristol, Tenn. He retired from the Georgia-Pacific pulp mill in 1978. He was a member of West Side Church of Christ in Palatka.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Pauline Blevins of Pomona Park; two sons, Dean Blevins of Pomona Park and Jacky Blevins of Palatka; three daughters, Peggy James and Sandra Smith, both of Laurel, Md., and Gloria Barnsley of Olney, Md.; brother, Berry Blevins of Shady Valley, Tenn.; two sisters, Mona McQueen and Sue Berry, both of Shady Valley, Tenn.; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Clayton Frank & Sons Funeral Home in Crescent City with the Rev. Ed. Starling officiating. Burial will be in Eden Cemetery.

1231 BLOUNTVILLE - Dr. James Erby Messimer went to be with the Lord, March 1, 2023 peacefully at his home surrounded by family in Blountville, TN. Known to most as “Doc”, Jim was a loving husband to his wife Elizabeth Ann (Hagie) Messimer, and father to James William Messimer. He was born in Johnson City, on August 3, 1950 to Lorraine (Frank) Messimer and Erby Messimer.

Doc was a graduate of Jonesborough High School and Palmer College of Chiropractic.

Doc was a very active member in his community, serving as mayor of Bristol, TN from 2004 to 2007 and Bristol City Council from 2003 to 2008. He was a proud member of the Tennessee Chiropractic Association, Second Harvest Food Bank, Bristol Host Lions Club, and the Mt Empire Red Cross, serving in various leadership positions. He also sat on the Bristol Regional Board of Directors and Kentucky Christian University Board of Directors for a period of years. He enjoyed serving with the Sullivan County Sheriff Department Reserve, Santa Pal, Healing Hands, the Hands-On Museum, and the Boys and Girls Club.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Donnie and Ronnie Messimer.

He is survived by a loving and large family, including his six grandchildren, Benjamin, Isaiah (Sammy), Lorelei, David, Josiah, and Elliana, and dear friends, Edwin Peters, Bob Smith, and Nancy Morrell.

Doc was a longtime member and elder of West Hills Christian Church in Bristol, Tennessee.

1232 BLOUNTVILLE - Helen Maggie (Arnett) Carter, age 79, of Blountville, Tennessee went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, October 7, 2022 at the Waters of Bristol Nursing Home. Helen was born in Carter County, a daughter of the late Paul and Grace (Simerly) Arnett. In addition to her parents, Helen was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harry McClain Carter; three brothers, Bill Arnett, Sammy Arnett, and Cecil Arnett.

Helen was a beloved mother and grandmother who loved traveling and working outside. As the wife of a military husband, she traveled extensively with her husband and developed a love for traveling and making new friends wherever she went. Helen had a servant’s heart and a deep devotion to her family and as such, she donated a kidney to her brother. Helen will be deeply missed by her family and those who had the pleasure of knowing her kind soul.

Those left to remember and cherish her memory include her daughter, Teresa Denton and husband Dave; four grandchildren, Sara Denton Dean and husband Jason, Carter Denton and wife Abbigail, Jake Denton, and Luke Denton; her brothers and sisters, Betty McNeil, Margie Walsh, R.J. She was born in Bristol, VA. Mrs. Cross was a woman of strong faith and she served many years at Wheeler United Methodist Church and Sunnyside Baptist Church.

Mrs. Cross was preceded in death by her special mother Rachel Johnson, her loving grandmother Allie Hicks, her brother Ralph Hicks, her sister Betty Dickenson and other family members.

She was a very loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Cross is survived by her loving husband of 54 years Edwin "Pigeon" Cross her daughter and best friend Carmen Cross her son Travis Cross and his wife Karen and her two precious grandchildren Wynn and Graham Cross. She is also survived by her brothers Bobby Johnson and Gary Johnson and many other family members.

Robbin was from Roan Mountain TN and lived in various places throughout her life, to include Tennessee, North Carolina, Florida and California. She was the daughter of the late Norman and Belvia Winters Bartlett.

Robbin graduated from Cloudland High School. She was a young Mother, but eventually went on to become a Real Estate Agent, Song Writer, Poet, Restaurant Owner and Co-Business owner of a Plumbing Business in Fremont, California. She was always very creative and determined in making things happen for herself and for her family, all the while taking care of her children and making some of the best southern meals anyone could imagine. She moved back to her roots in Tennessee when she retired and lived her life with love and compassion. She recently adopted a cat and named her Boots. She spent as much time with her family as her health would allow and made everyone feel important and loved. Her compassion for people and animals will always be remembered and admired.

In addition to her parents, Robbin was preceded in death by her husband Robert McMillan, one sister, Lana Rudnick; one brother, Herbert Winters one Great Grandchild, Michael Dugger and the following Stepfamily; Bonnie Hughes, Stella Bowers, Herman Barnett and Paula Hitechew.

Roxie Bare Williams was retired after 30 + years of service with pharmaceutical companies in Bristol (Massengills, Beecham, Glaxo-Smithkline). She was a hard worker, loved Jesus, her kids and family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Virginia McCloud and eight Brothers, George D. He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter Miles and Rose Thomas Yates; sisters, Gertrude McLamb, Winifred Counts, Nina Cashwell, Ida Faye Gibson, Violet Irvin, Infant brother, Harold Hassell.

First and foremost Sid was a Christian, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. Sid was a veteran of the United States Navy, he was detached with the 5th and 6th Marine Divisions during World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bluff City. He was a tool and die maker/machinist at Raytheon, Sperry and retired from Univac in Bristol, TN. Sid was self-employed the remaining years of his life. He loved the classical guitar, boating and metal-working. He also enjoyed working around his home, fabricating accessories for lawn tractor and other equipment.

Sid is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Norma Davis Yates; daughter, Pamela Cobham of Jonesborough, TN; son, Keith B. Yates and wife Jan of Johnson City, TN; son, David C. Yates and wife Ann of Johnson City, TN; grandchildren, Allison Lansdorp of Johnson City, TN, Matthew Jennings of Jonesborough, TN, Keeley Chinn and husband Robbie of Golden, CO, Kristopher Yates of Charleston, SC, Erin Evans of Johnson City, TN, and Kirstie Brown of Knoxville, TN; great granddaughter Mary Emma Evans; sister, Saundra Stone of Dania Beach, Florida; brothers-in law, James Stone, Darrell Davis and wife Jenny, Jim Deel, and Jim Counts and wife Marie, and numerous nieces and nephews.

1238 BLUFF CITY - Clara Perry Scalf, age 99, of Bluff City, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 25, 2021 at her residence surrounded by her family. Clara was born in Sullivan County to the late Jack and Molly Carr Perry. In addition to her parents, Clara was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward Anderson Scalf; her newborn twin children, Ed and Edna Scalf; all eight of her siblings, Bonnie Scalf, Velva Glover, Georgia Elliott, Mitchell Perry, Raymond Perry, Troy Perry, Sam Perry and Ed Perry.
Clara retired from Unisys in Bristol and had also worked at The Shell Plant during World War II. She was the oldest member at Bunker Hill Christian Church, and she loved going to church and her church family. Clara enjoyed reading, quilting and sewing, flowers and gardening and watching the Atlanta Braves.
Clara loved to laugh. Those in her presence were in awe of her knowledge and creativity. She had a servants heart and faithfully covered her community with handmade gifts, quilts and baked goods.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Jess and Pauline Shell Troutman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Joshua Derrick Troutman. Mr. Troutman retired as a construction supervisor. He attended Pleasant View Baptist Church and was a United States veteran having served in the Army Reserves.

Dorothy was born in the Chinquapin Community to the late Eddie L. and Millie Smith Richards. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl O'Dell; two sisters, Ruby Carrier and Rhoda "Bea" Lowe; and one niece, Judy Scoggins.

Dorothy was a dedicated homemaker, mother and wife. She was a member of Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church and also attended Bluff City First Christian Church. She loved to travel with her husband and family and loved going to the beach. She enjoyed her special friends in her Sunday School Class at Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church and gardening, cooking and watching her favorite sports teams – the Atlanta Braves and the Tennessee Lady Vols.

Those left to cherish her memories include two sons, Barry Kent O'Dell and Rodney Eric O'Dell; one daughter, Jill Fair and husband Roger; one very special grandchild, Skylar Fair; and several nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate the life of Dorothy O'Dell will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 30, 2019 in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Bluff City with Pastor Rusty Verran, Mr. Wade Lockner, Mr. David Hurd, and Pastor Jonathan Feathers, officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Saturday.

The graveside service will follow in the Poplar Ridge Christian Church Cemetery in Piney Flats, Tennessee. Active pallbearers will be Jared Rhinehardt, Ray Boling, Danny Buchanan, Tony Carrier, Jerry Gregg, Roger Fair and Skylar Fair. 1241 BLUFF CITY - Ernest Edward Morrell, age 93, of Bluff City, Tenn., passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2019 at the VA Community Living Center.

He was born April 17, 1926 in Bristol, Tenn., a son of the late Edgar and Rosa Belle Carrier Morrell. Ernest was a U.S. Army WWII Veteran. He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and retired from Mason-Dixon Trucking. He was a member of Central Holston Christian Church. Ernest was an avid turkey and deer hunter and fly fisherman. Ernest was a good friend to all and never hesitated to help family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Hopson Morrell.

He is survived by his daughter, Ellen Rose Morrell Parker and husband Bob; grandson, Charles Parker; and siblings, J.D. Morrell and Nell Campbell.

The funeral service will be held 6 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2019 in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Minister Steve Page officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. prior to the service. The interment will be held 1 p.m. Sunday, July 28, 2019 at Shipley Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Bristol VFW Honor Guard. 1242 BLUFF CITY - Malcolm “Bud” Snyder Rambo, age 89, of Bluff City, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 16, 2020, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 15, 1930 in Elizabethton, Tenn., a son of the late Argil Gresham and Gladys Rachel Snyder Rambo. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Angela Rambo; and sister, Edna Adams.

Bud was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War. He was a member of Euclid Avenue Baptist Church and served as Security. Throughout his career, he was a salesman and purchasing agent for Mitchell-Powers Hardware Company for over 35 years. Bud loved farming and gardening.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean S. Rambo; daughter, Mitzi Mooberry and husband Steve; brother, Stuart Rambo and wife Sandra; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 at Oakley-Cook Funeral Home in Bristol, Tenn. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Dr. Allen Robert and Rev. Johnny Burton officiating. A committal and interment service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 19, 2020 at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Mountain City, Tenn. Pallbearers will be Larry Litz, Harvey Spence, Bud Bolling, Tom Snyder, Kevin Barb and Lynn Snyder. Honorary pallbearers will be members of The Roundtable at the Slater Center.

1243 BLUFF CITY - Nina Sue Bennett, age 81, of Bluff City, Tennessee went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at her home. Nina was born in Sullivan County, a daughter of the late Paul and Beulah (Morse) Hicks. In addition to her parents, Nina was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Virgil Wayne Bennett; a daughter, Amber Bennett; a son, Michael Bennett; a son-in-law, Leonard Berry; and several brothers and sisters.

Nina was a wonderful wife, mother, grandma and sister and a member of Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church. She loved working puzzles, collecting anything roosters, but her greatest joy came from the time she spent with her family- especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Those left to cherish Nina’s memory include two daughters, Rhonda Berry of Elizabethton and Tammy (James) Owens of Bluff City; four sons, Keith (Carolyn) Bennett and Mark (Brenda) Bennett all of Bristol, TN and David (Flora) Bennett of Bluff City; eleven grandchildren: Jenni, Sarah, Jessica, Andrew, Brittany, Stacie, Christin, Tony, Jordan, Erica and Dalton; several great grandchildren; three sisters, Treola Cornett, Wanda Hicks and Stella Burnette; one brother, Allen Hicks; a daughter-in-law, Ann Bennett of Bristol, TN; a special friend, Peggy McDuffie; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

A celebration of Nina’s life will be conducted at 6:00 PM on Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church with Reverend Jamie Ferguson and Reverend Rusty Verran officiating. Music will be under the direction of Lori Burnett and Dawn Warren, soloists. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the church, prior to the service on Saturday. Friends may also call at the home of a daughter, Tammy Owens, 1557 Chinquapin Grove Road, Bluff City.

1244 BLUFF CITY - One Bluff City man was instantly killed, another was injured and two Carter County men were injured in a delayed dynamite explosion yesterday near Kingsport.

T.F. Osborne [Thomas Fred Osborne], prominent Bluff city man and father of five children was killed in the blast, Carl Oliver, 20, of Bluff City was injured, as were John B. Lyons, 45, and J.C. Peeks, 22, of near Elizabethton.

Osborne was foreman of the work crew doing blasting operations on a logging trail in the Kingsport-Church Hill area.

Lyons, who was treated at a Kingsport hospital and released, told the story of the accident. The extent of injuries to Oliver and Peeks was not determined today.

Failed to Explode

Lyons said a charge of dynamite had been set in a hole and the fuse lighted. It failed to explode and after waiting 11 minutes, the four men returned to the site to see what was wrong.

"We put another charge in to make the first one go off," Lyons said.

The second charge exploded but the first one still failed to detonate. The men again returned to the site and one began probing in the loose dirt.

Then the orginal charge exploded.

Peeks and Oliver were reported in fair condition at Kingsport's Holston Valley Community Hospital.

1245 BLUFF CITY - Patricia M. Loveless Sparks, age 74, of Bluff City, TN passed away surrounded by her family on Monday, April 1, 2019 at her residence.

A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late David Eugene Loveless and Addie Marie Davis Loveless. She retired from the packaging department of Baxter Pharmaceuticals and she was of the Baptist faith. Patricia was an amazing and devoted mother and grandmother who enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, boating and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Carrol Ann Sparks Cloyd; two sisters, Linda Carter and Barbara Strickland and one brother, Jackie Loveless. 1246 BLUFF CITY - Philip H. Carrier, age 87 of Bluff City, TN passed away October 19th, 2021 at his residence. He was born to Fred and Verda Carrier on November 6, 1933. He was the owner of Phil Carrier Meat Processing and Cattle Dealership.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 59 years, Jean Browning Carrier; A sister, JoAnn Carrier Dunlap; and a granddaughter Sarah Fanduzz

1247 BLUFF CITY - Shirley Faye Denton Stout 79, of Bluff City, TN went to be with her Lord on November 20th, 2021.
Shirley was a member of Walnut Grove Baptist church and was a devoted Christian. She was a cat lover but adored all animals. She could usually be found caring for other people as well as animals.
She was preceded in death by her parents Charlie and Melvina Akins Denton; her husband, Harvey Stout; a sister, Florence Denton; six brothers, Clarence, Clyde, Herbert, Howard, Paul, and Gene Denton.
Those left to cherish her memory are several nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews, a special sister-in-law, Clara Denton and special friend, Becky Buchanan.
A service to honor the life of Shirley Stout will be held at the Tetrick Funeral Home, Bluff City Chapel on Saturday, December 11, 2021 at 12:00 pm with Pastor Harley Lloyd officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service at Tetrick Funeral Home, Bluff City from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm. 1248 BLUFF CITY - Susan D. Rutherford, age 55, of Bluff City, TN, went peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, August 27, 2019, at Johnson City Medical Center after a long battle with cancer.

She is preceded in death by her father, Ray DeLoach; two spouses, Ronnie Rutherford and Mark Booher; and her maternal grandparents, Harry and Nina Shell.

She is survived by her mother, Carol Buchanan; brother, Doug DeLoach and wife Beth; sister, Teresa Booher and husband Jesse; nephew, Lucas DeLoach; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; her family at Elizabethton Housing Agency; her friends at BTES; and her dogs "Zip" and "Blaze".

To honor Susan's wishes, a cremation will take place with a private memorial service to be held at a later date.

1249 BLUFF CITY - Thomas Steward Sluder, age 82, of Bluff City, TN passed away Tuesday, August 21, 2018 in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Newland,

NC he was the son of the late Andrew and Flora Hurt Sluder. He was a member of Gateway Freewill Baptist Church and he was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Larry Sluder. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Alma Sluder, of the home; two daughters, Rita Lorene Cox, Bristol, TN and Linda Sluder Gunter, Morganton, NC; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a nephew, Doyle Calhoun, Newland, NC and three nieces, Glenda Calhoun Yates, Newland, NC, Joyce Benfield Brewer, Newland, NC and Gina Benfield Barrier, Morganton, NC.

1250 BLUFF CITY — Mrs. Mary L. Painter, age 74, Bluff City, TN, went to be with her Precious Lord and Savior Monday, August 2, 2010, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Painter was a native of Unicoi County and daughter of the late Alvin & Ida Lockner Richardson. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Painter was also preceded in death by an infant brother, Tommy Richardson; an infant sister, Irene Richardson; and two brothers, Claude Richardson and Fred Richardson

She was a member of Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Painter was a homemaker and had worked at Magnavox and Dunbar Pepper Plant.
