1001 Another Old Settler Gone

Tennessee Franklin Lusk was born in Elizabethton, Carter County, Tennessee, June 22nd, 1861, the son of Samuel and Sarah Lusk. His father having died during his early infancy, he was left with his widowed mother until he came to manhood when he was united in marriage to Margaret Emma Bayless at Elizabethton, Tenn., December 28, 1882.
To this union were born ten children, seven sons and three daughters. Anna who came with her parents to Melvern, Kansas in the spring of 1884 and took her daparture(sic) from this life at the early age of seventeen months; Grover C. of Max, Nebraska; John S. of Topeka, Kan.; Edward B. of Collins, Mo. who preceded his father in death February 1923; Sara E. who died August 1923; James C. of Manhattan, Kan. and T. F. Jr. who preceded his father in death at the recent date of December 18th 1923; Howard B. of Lyndon, Kan., and Howell B. of Waverly, Kan., and baby Helen, who died in early infancy.
He with the family resided vicinity of Melvern until the yerr(sic) 1900 when he purchased the farm home near Olivet where he has resided until his death, January 3 1924, at 12:30 p. m. aged 62 years aged 62 years 6 months 12 days.
As a husband he was devoted; as a father, loving; and as a neighbor and friend, ever ready to aid and comfort in the hour of greatest need. Besise(sic) his widow and their wives and the twelve grand children, he leaves to mourn his loss a host of other relatives and friends.
While his spirit has gone to his God who gave it, his body we must commit to the tomb to await the resurrection morn.
His memory will live on and on in the lives of family and friends.
He was a charter member of the Modern Woodmen Lodge at Melvern, and took a transfer to Olivet when moving to that vicinity. In 1923 he was appointed County Commisioner of this, the Third district, to succeed Mr. Marion Smith, deceased, and was compelled to resign a short time before is death.
Funeral serviced were conducted by Rev. E. T. Lacey from the Methodist church, Melvern, and interment made in the Melvern cemetery, Saturday Jan. 5th.

1002 Anthony Burton Tester Sr., Happy Valley Road, Johnson City, Tenn., passed away on January 26, 2022, at the age of 73. Burt was a lifelong fire prevention sprinkler fitter and was born December 9, 1948 to the late James Clyde Tester and Elva Arlene Dugger Tester. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, including Roy L. Tester, Michael James Tester and Fredrick P. Tester; sisters, Norma J. Tester Harrison, Deborah A. Tester Stout and Doris M. Tester Branch; a grandchild, Ema Jane Marie Tester; children, Sheri Campbell and James Campbell.
Anthony was of the Christian faith and attended Pinecrest Christian Church. He loved to cook and spend time with his family. He loved those around him and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. He was very mechanically inclined and able to fix anything that needed repaired. He always found a way to make it happen.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Donna Tester; children, Sherry Tester, Anthony B. Tester Jr., Christopher Maston Tester (Tracey Nicole), Patrick Thomas Tester of Coshocton, Ohio, Joel A. Tester (Penny), Frank Lascola and Richard Campbell; grandchildren, Andrew Tester, Aaron Stansell, Darion Jade Tester, Cassius Tester, Maston J. Tester, Mary Elva Tester, Ava Rae Tester, Kelsey Nicole Carrier, Alex Campbell and Matthew Campbell; great-grandchildren, Krisli Carrier and Chandler Carrier; and brothers and sisters, Linda K. Tester, Rose Marie Branch and Robert L. Tester. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Sycamore Shoals Hospital for the excellent care and compassion shown to Burt during his illness.

1005 APRIL 21 - Rosa Ardith Harmon Stout, 97, went to be with her Lord, Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at the Woodland in Farmville. She was born on February 3, 1914, in Avery County, NC and moved to Buckingham County in 1946. She was a devoted mother and homemaker who always put the needs of others before her own.

Ms. Stout is survived by nine children, Shirley Huddleston and husband, Richard of Richmond, Evelyn Taylor and husband, Carl Ray of Midlothian, Bobby Stout and wife, Jean of Dothan, AL, Larry Stout of Buckingham, Jack Stout and wife, Marie of Midlothain, Teddy Stout and wife, Mimi of Lorton, Novil Stout Jr. and wife, Alice of Middlebrook, Johnny Stout and wife, Patricia of Buckingham and Deborah Speas of Cumberland; 18 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Novil Erin Stout and her oldest daughter, Betty Huddleston.

The family will receive friends at Dunkum Funeral Home from 7-9 p.m. on April 22.

Services will be at Salem United Methodist Church, Dillwyn, at 3 p.m. on April 23 with interment in the church cemetery immediately after the services.

1007 Archie "Jack" Taylor, age 81, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Jack was born in Carter County, Tennessee to the late General Jackson Taylor and Goldie Taylor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine Grindstaff; his second wife, Roma J. Taylor; two grandchildren, Jackson Johnston and Taylor Blevins; his siblings, Willie Taylor Garland, Lena Gregory, Loretta Markland, Lois Jean McClure, Laurie Campbell, Brooks Taylor, Cephus Taylor, Coy Taylor and Sterling Taylor; two half-sisters, Ruth Estep and Chelsea Taylor; and three half-brothers, Roy Taylor, Anderson Taylor and John Taylor.

Jack was a 1957 graduate of Unaka High School and was a member of Moore's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. He retired from Baxter Pharmaseal after 38 years of service. Jack enjoyed time with family and friends and grandkids, listening to music, country drives, gardening and watching the Braves.

Those left to cherish his memory include three daughters, Tammy Blevins, of Gray, TN, Maria Gwin and husband Joshua, also of Gray, TN and Jackee Johnston and husband Jason, of Johnson City, TN; one son, Gary Taylor and wife Regina, of Charleston, SC; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and one brother, Freeman Taylor, of Elizabethton.

A graveside service to honor the life of Archie "Jack" Taylor will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Clarence Phillips and Pastor Ben Cole, officiating. Music will be provided by Angela Bowman and Melissa Woods. Jack's nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers.

1009 Arden - Hazel Riddle Gentry, 89, formerly of Wellington Drive, Arden, died on Friday, January 4, 2013, at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center.

A native of Mitchell Co., Mrs. Gentry was a daughter of the late J.C. and Decky Gouge Riddle. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Joe E. Gentry, who died in 1993, five sisters, and three brothers.

Mrs. Gentry loved children, and was most proud of raising her own children, and taking care of the children of others.

She is survived by her daughters, Lana Franklin and husband Wendell, of Warner Robins, GA; Barbara Gentry and fiancé Marshall Humphrey, of Asheville; six grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; special niece, Martha Cox; and her special friends, Sandra and Nancy Hensley.

A graveside service for Mrs. Gentry will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.

1010 Arden – Bobby Edward "Grady" Barrier, 72, of died Tuesday, September 19, 2006.

A native of Avery County, he was the son of the late Bob and Ruth Buchanan Barrier. He was an active member of Arden First Baptist Church, serving as deacon, member of the Good Neighbor Sunday School Class, various committees and leader with the RA's. He was a retired mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service.

Mr. Barrier is survived by his wife of 25 years, Barbara Wimbish Barrier; daughter, Bari Barrier and her husband Frank Miller of Candler; son, Biff Barrier of Candler; three step-sons, Andy Horne and his wife Kellee of Gastonia, Greg Horne and his wife Linda of Jacksonville, Fla. and Jeff Horne of Easley, SC; three grandchildren, Ashley, Casey and Ali; two great grandchildren, Hailey and Trevor and six step-grandchildren, Andrew, Lindsay, Lauren, William, Christina and Nicholas. Also surviving is his sister, Anita Thornton of Midland, NC; his brother Phil Barrier and his wife Mitzi of Newland, NC; his step-mother, Addie Barrier of Newland and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at the Yellow Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery in Avery County

1011 Argil Dale Hodge, age 78, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away on Friday night, January 20, 2023 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Dale was born on December 14, 1944 in Shady Valley, TN to the late Grant and Winnie Campbell Hodge. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Virgil Hodge.

Dale loved to fish, hunt and watch boxing. He worked for many years in construction and operating heavy equipment. Dale was a member of Crandull Church of Christ in Shady Valley.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 55 years, Shelby Rutter Hodge; sons, Jeff Hodge (Betty), Norman Hodge (Gina), Nathan Hodge (Mandy); grandchildren, Ernie Hodge, Josh Hodge and Morgan Hodge; great-grandchild, Khloe Hodge; sisters, Judy Warden and Deloris Goble; brothers, Ted Hodge and Ed Hodge; numerous nieces and nephews, special niece, Abigail Murray.

The family will receive friends from 5:00–7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Crandull Church of Christ with funeral service to follow at 7:00 p.m. with Minister Tracy Dugger officiating. 1012 Arizona Whitehead Hopson, 85, 6000 Highway 19E, Hampton, died Nov. 25 at her residence.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Isaac Taylor "Ike" and Cecie Hughes Whitehead. She was a retired employee in the dietary department of the Hillview Health Care Center. She was a member of the Pearce's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, but attended Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Donnie Hopson; five sisters, Julie Miller, Celia Simerly, Nancy Jeanette Hill, Hattie Jane Whitehead and Virginia Kistner; and by seven brothers, Everett, Elmer, Henry Allen, William Earl, Frank Stewart, Clarence and John A. Whitehead. "Mrs. Hopson was the last surviving granddaughter of John and Nancy Snyder Whitehead."

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Madlyn and Gary Smith, Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Garry and Carol Hopson, Hampton; 10 grandchildren, Melissa Orman, Garry "Shannon" Hopson, Rachel Tingle, Heather Garrison, Brian Hopson, Donna Hopson, Johnnie Wilson, Jessica Buckles, Trina and Belinda; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dave Morgan officiating. The eulogy will be given by Justin Buckles. Graveside service and interment will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Whitehead Cemetery. Music will be provided by the Pearce's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church Choir. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, will be Rod Whitehead, Ed Miller, Jimmy Whitehead, John Garrison, Justin Buckles and Dillard Whitehead. Honorary pallbearers will be Herman Hill, Phillip Whitehead, Charlie Whitehead, Leslie Whitehead, Eddie Guinn, Sr., Eddie Guinn, Jr., Barney and Betty McKinney. He was born April 14, 1928 in Johnson County, Tennessee to the late David W. Mink and Margaret Vaught Mink. In addition to his parents, Arley was preceded in death by his first wife Jean Moore Mink and his second wife Edna Mae Lunceford Mink; four sisters and five brothers.

Arley was a member of Locust Gap Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include his son, Patrick Mink of Victoria, Australia; and several nieces and nephews. It was Arley's request to be cremated; no visitation or formal service held. His remains will be buried at Shoun's United Methodist Church cemetery.

1014 Arlie Vernon Cole, 93, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at his residence. He was born April 21, 1928 in Elizabethton to the late Flossie Cole Grindstaff.
Arlie was retired from Freemons in Torrance, Calif., after 30 years of service. He was a member of Moores Chapel Free Will Baptist Church but attended Willow Springs Baptist Church. His hobbies were singing, collecting toys, traveling, and in earlier years, square dancing.
He was preceded in death by a son, David Cole.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Taylor Cole; three sons, Lloyd of Arkansas, Jimmy of Maine and Barney Taylor and wife Beverly of Ohio; two daughters, Marlena of Wisconsin and Priscila Davis and husband Ed of Elizabethton; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a special granddaughter and caregiver, Heather; a special great-granddaughter, Matti; and one brother, Obie of Texas.
The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 12, in the Kress Cemetery with the Rev. Eric Heaton and the Rev. Chris Hughes officiating. Interment will follow the service. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

He was a retired Mechanic at Carter County Motors. He was of the Missionary Baptist Faith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers: Evans, Sam, Ray & Bobby Whitehead.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years: Margaret Johnson Whitehead, Several nieces & nephews. His special friends: Chad Golden and Glenn Blackburn.

1016 Arnold Hicks of Buck Mountain died at the age of 71, Sunday July 23, 2017 at Mission Hospital in Ashville, NC.

He was proceeded in death by his parents Norman and Elizabeth Hicks, his wife Phillis Hicks, brothers Carrol Hick and Leon Hicks.

He had seven great-grandchildren that loved him dearly. Arnold also had three special fur babies, Buddy, Zoey, and Izzy.

Arnold was the love of his wife's life. He was loving, generous and a loyal husband, father and friend he will be terribly missed.

Survivors are the husband, Eugene Arnold; eight children, Sylvia, Pearle, Frances, Genieve, Vella Mae, Dallas Beal, Bobby Gene, and an infant son; mother, Mrs. Laura Campbell of Carderview; four brothers, Ernest Campbell of Kingsport, Roscoe Campbell with the U.S. Army in Japan; Joe Campbell of Johnson City, and Sankler Campbell of Carderview.
The body was taken to the home of the mother in Carderview, where the funeral was at 2:30 Sunday, June 26. Burial was in the Campbell Cemetery.

Claude C. Arnold, age 35, a Johnson county native and a veteran of World War II, died Saturday night, Dec. 4, in Creston, N.C., of what Carolina officers termed a self-inflicted wound.
C. S. Neal, clerk of the Superior Court in Jefferson, N.C., quoted the Ashe county coroner as saying that Arnold died as the result of a self-inflicted rifle wound.
He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors are his mother, Mrs. Lizzie Arnold, Neva; one son, Lester Arnold, Neva; six brothers, William Coolidge, and David Arnold of Baltimore, Md., Walter Arnold of Hampton, Joe Arnold of Neva, and John Arnold of St. Louis, Mo.; three sisters, Mrs. Nannie Hartman of Richmond, Va., Mrs. Beulah Mink and Mrs. Rosalie Dunn of Neva.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Johnson Chapel, with Rev. Earl Campbell and Rev. John Vannoy officiating. Burial was in Arnold Cemetery. Hill Funeral Home in charge.

J. Edward Nolin officiating. Burial will be in the Monte Vista Burial Park.

Mr. Arnold was a Veteran of World War I, a Lieutenant in the State Guard, and a member of the Mountain City American Legion Post Number 67. Prior to coming to Johnson City in 1943, he was a well-known merchant in Johnson County.
Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Janie Wilkinson Arnold; three sons, Ralph of Chattanooga, Gene of Abilene, Texas, and Malcolm of Johnson City; one daughter, Miss Lois Arnold of Washington, D.C.; four brothers, J.C. of Chattanooga, Theodore of Carthage, Dee of Mountain City and Tom of Norfolk, Virginia; and one sister, Mrs. G. E. Burton of Norfolk, Virginia.
The body was moved to the home this afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the chapel of the Tetrick Funeral Home where it will remain until 12:30 p.m. Thursday when it will be taken to the church to lie in state until the funeral hour.

Funeral services for Frank Arnold, 20 years of age, who was fatally injured when a bus struck his automobile last Thursday, in New York, were conducted from Valley View Methodist Church Monday afternoon. Rev. E. Z. Blankenbeckler was in charge of the services.
The parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Arnold, and seven sisters survive.
A brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Bell, of New York accompanied the remains to this place.

1027 Arra B. Garland, 82, 1614 Orlando Drive, Johnson City, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Garland was a native of Carter County and had lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was a daughter of the late John and Emma Morton Hyder and was also preceded in death by her husband, Ira Garland, in 1968, five brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Garland was a retired employee of TPI.
Survivors include four sons, Curtis Lynn Church, Palm Bay, Fla., Richard L. Church, Elizabethton, Bobby Church, Jonesborough, and Sammy Garland, Johnson City; a daughter, Linda Gourley, Jonesborough; and a brother, Clyde
Hyder, Johnson City. Twelve grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

1029 Artanzy Woodard Howard, age 94, passed away on January 19, 2022. Artanzy was born on April 2, 1927 to the late Noah Woodard and Berdie Forrester Woodard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Roscoe Lincoln Howard; daughter, Juanita Howard; sisters, Care May, Louise Forrester, and Villis “Phyllis” Icenhour; brothers, Paul Woodard, Jerry Woodard, Dan Woodard, Elmer Woodard, Marion Woodard, and Wade Woodard.

Artanzy was a great cook and also enjoyed cooking as well as gardening. One of her greatest joys was playing with her grandchildren. She loved going to church and attended New Hope Ministry Baptist Church. While she lived in Johnson County she attended Vaught’s Gap Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughters, Eula Mae Colson, Trula Louise Ward, Betty Howard, Teresa Ann Parsons; sons, Franklin David Howard, Loyd “Earl” Howard; brother, Glen Woodard; twelve grandchildren; five great grandchildren and one on the way, and several nieces and nephews.

1030 Artha Loveless, 92, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 22, 2022, at her residence. A native of Carter County, Artha was born on May 6, 1929 to the late Jett and Nell Ward Dugger. In addition to her parents, Artha was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, George Randolph Loveless; her brother, Jimmy Dugger; and her sisters, Laura Taylor, Luster Pate, Virginia Wilson, Sue Dugger and Hannah Whitehead.
Artha was a wonderful homemaker, mother, wife and grandmother and was a member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Artha loved her family and her church family and will be dearly missed.
Those left to cherish Artha’s memory include her daughter, Kathy (Kenny) Lethcoe; her special granddaughter, Cara Carr; her grandson, Jackson Richerson of Mobile, Ala.; her granddaughter, Nora Grace Richerson, also of Mobile, Ala.; and her special friends, Jeff and Sandy Carr, Debbie Wilson, Sandi Harris and Haynes Carr. Several nieces, nephews, neighbors and her church family also survive.

She was born in Newland, N.C. on September 4, 1918 to the late Tilman and Melissa Calhoun, and spent much of her life as a homemaker. Artha was a member of the Canton Baptist Temple and enjoyed quilting and sewing. She will be greatly missed as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Emit Johnson in 1998, son, Finley Johnson in 1997; six brothers, Don, Austin, Bill, Jake, Bernie, Henry and sister, Mattie. 1032 Arthie D. Williams, age 96, 113 Roy Bowers Rd., Elizabethton, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, November 14, 2006 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Enoch and Amelia Heatherly Dinsmore.

Mrs. Williams attended Prayer Tabernacle and loved attending church and serving her Lord. She retired from Shufford Mills in Hickory, NC. Mrs. Williams enjoyed spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Clyde Williams, one sister, one brother and several half-brothers and half-sisters.

Survivors are four sons and three daughters-in-law, Lloyd and Barbara Williams, Wesley and Nancy Williams, Lester Williams, all of Elizabethton, Kenneth and Joy Williams, Butler, three daughters and sons-in-law, Verdie and Martin Pierce, Jr., Christine and Clyde Blevins, Naomi and Carl Richardson, all of Elizabethton, twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, thirteen great-great-grandchildren, one sister, Sophie bowers, Elizabethton, two half-brothers, Grayson Dinsmore, Corbin, KY, Howard Dinsmore, Elizabethton, and two half-sisters, June Murray and Lena Shelborn, both of Elizabethton. The funeral service for Mrs. Williams will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, in the Tetrick Funeral Home, Chapel of Peace, November 16 with Rev. Eric Lynn Pierce and Rev. Greg Wagner officiating. Mr. Winters was a lifelong resident of Carter County where he was the eldest son of the late Clyde and Reatha Dugger Winters Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Winters, a sister, Judy W. Nidiffer, and a brother, Fred Winters.

Mr. Winters was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Roan Mountain and was loved by all who knew him.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Geraldine Winters and Joyce and J.G. Hughes, all of Roan Mountain; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Goldie and Millard Jones, Roan Mountain, Edith and Glenwood Arrington, Martinsville, Va., Dimple and Larry Varney, Frankfort, Ky., and Elizabeth and W. 1034 Arthur Glen Johnson enlisted in the US Army on 21 Jan 1902 and was discharged on Angel Island, California on 30 Jan 1905. During that period, he was assigned to the 22nd Infantry Regiment. This Regiment was deployed to The Philippines to fight in the Philippine-American War during 1900-1905. 1035 Arthur Howard Shoun died Dec. 12 at Mt. Angel Towers Health Center. He was 90.

A service was held Dec. 16 at the Unger Funeral Chapel in Silverton.

Mr. Shoun was born on Aug. 25, 1914, in Elizabethton, Tenn., where he met and married Grace Shankle in 1940. They were together for 58 years until her death in 1998. They moved to John Day in 1947. Mr. Shoun worked as a ranch hand until he went to work for Blue Mountain Sawmill. He was injured in a work related accident and became disabled in 1962.

His favorite pastime was spending time with his family.

Survivors include his two daughters, Gilda Farrell of Silverton and Reainnella Moffat of Molalla; two sons, Dallas Shoun of John Day and Robert Shoun of Florence; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, three brothers and three sisters.

Contributions can be made to Mt. Angel Towers or Willamette Valley Hospice.

Artie was a member of Little Elk Mountain Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, and flowers. Her favorite flowers are Dahlias, Lilies, and Roses. Her favorite music was Gospel.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Kelly and Lola Grindstaff Cole. He was retired from the American Water Heater. Mr. Cole served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church, Johnson City.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a step-son and a brother.

1042 Athaline "Granny" Massengill, 86, of Watauga, went home to be with her Lord, from the home of her daughter, on Sunday, November 15, 2015 following an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late H. H. and Nola Brunty Bare and was born in Aflax, KY, although she had lived most of her life in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Massengill.

Mrs. Massengill was retired from L.C. King Undergarment and was of the Christian faith. She loved talking with her friends, sewing and camping. She was also a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.

She is survived by her daughter, Vera Wolfe and her husband, who was a very special son-in-law, Vonnie; Watauga; two grandchildren, Scottie Wolfe, Bluff City; Starr Nave and her husband, Craig, Watauga; six great-grandchildren, James Wolfe, Summer Wolfe, Josh Wolfe, Hayden Nave, Olivia Wolfe and Mahala Nave; and a brother, Orville Bare, Bluff City; several nieces and nephews also survive. She was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church and graduate of Lamar High School. She retired from Alliance Data Systems in Johnson City, TN.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Kristi Dawn Rice and nephew Justin Blankenship.

She is survived by her son, Jeff and Tiffany Rice; step-grandchildren, Gage and Sydnee Duncan; a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Myra Blankenship; a nephew and spouse, Matt and Angie Blankenship; niece and spouse, Larae and Phil Graves; and several great nieces and one great nephew.

The family would like to thank NHC Health Care for their care and kindness during her stay.

1044 ATLANTA, GA - With great sadness, the family of Sue Luntsford Broyles shares her passing at the age of 86, on Tuesday, September 21, at the Ivy Hall Assisted Living Center.

Sue was one of six children, the fourth daughter born to the late Samuel Guy Luntsford, Sr. and the late Bonnie Shell Luntsford of Johnson City. As a young woman she graduated from Science Hill High School, and afterwards attended ETSU. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Johnson City. Sue lived most of her life in the Atlanta area and was an avid sports fan for the Atlanta Braves. She also greatly enjoyed music and singing, especially her beloved hymns, and loved playing Bridge. During these years in Atlanta she reared her three children: Dr. Steven Scott Broyles (Jan – deceased), Pamela Broyles Lizzio (Bill, Sr.), John Alfred Broyles, IV (Linda); her siblings: Jane Luntsford Childers (Carl – deceased), Samuel Guy Luntsford, Jr. (Jan), and Nancy Luntsford Osborne (Jim). Sue is also survived by eight grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and their families. She is pre-deceased by her siblings; Charlotte Luntsford Steffner (Ed) and Ann Luntsford Patton (Tom).

There will be a private graveside committal service at Monte Vista Memorial Park.

1046 Aubrey Frank Ensor, 88, Elizabethton, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at his home Tuesday, December 17, 2019. He was born September 06, 1931, to John and Mary Kress Ensor, Elizabethton, Tennessee, where he grew up. He served in the United States Army in the Korean War Conflict. He was retired from Tri-State Container. He was an avid sportsman and loved to fish, hunt, and watch sports.

He was a member of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church where he loved his Sunday School Class. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings Ida Connelly, Velma Davis, Rob Ensor, Ivan Ensor, Moilee Lewis, Ella Mae Bishop, and Glen Ensor. He is survived by a brother Dennie Ensor and sister Jesseline Ensor.

Survivors include his loving wife of 66 years, Onnie Jemema Lowe Ensor. His children, Sandra and husband Mike Patrick, Clarksville, Tn. Debbie Heaton and husband Eric, Elizabethton, Amy and husband Tank Morrell, Elizabethton and Audra and husband David Wood, Elizabethton. He loved his four grandchildren Brittany Heaton, Cody and Sasha Cornett, Chelsea Wood, Matthew Wood and fiancée Chelsea Grubb. The family would like to express a special thank you to his special friend Paul and Lenice Taylor.

The family will receive friends at Memorial Funeral Chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. and the Funeral Service will follow at 7 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Chapel on Friday, December 20, 2019, with son-in-law Pastor Eric Heaton and grandson Rev. Matthew Wood, officiating. Pallbearers will be Donald Ensor, John Ensor, Jeff Lewis, Lee Martin, Gary Morrell and Paul Taylor. Honorary Pallbearers include The Men's Sunday School Class of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church. Music will be provided by Mrs. Joyce Salyer, soloist. Graveside Service and interment will be at 11 a.m. at the Kress Cemetery.

1047 Audrey Camilla Reece, age 75, went to be with the Lord on February 7, 2022. Audrey was born on April 21, 1946 to the late Charles and Suma Reece. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by several aunts, uncles, and nephew, Michael Reece.

Audrey was an avid reader and book collector. She was also a big Elvis Presley fan and collector of Elvis memorabilia. She was a great sister and wonderful aunt. Audrey was employed as a secretary for Lewis May, a former attorney and then district attorney general. Afterward she worked for over 40 years for the Johnson County Board of Education. She dearly loved her church, Valley View United Methodist Church.

Those left to cherish her memories include her sisters, Kathi Wallace, Lisha Johnson and husband Vince, Judy Billings and husband Steve; brothers, Jeffrey Reece, Charles Reece and wife Louise, Terry Reece; aunts, Mary Reece and Helen Triplett; friends, Hilda Robinson, Rita Robinson and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and cousins.



The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 10, 2022 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Pastor Anna Staples officiating. The graveside service and burial will follow at Phillippi Cemetery. Pallbearers will be friends and family.

1048 Audrey Jane Blackburn Grindstaff, 76, Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, March 26, 2022, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born June 27, 1945 in Carter County to the late Silas Clifton and Ada Zella Scalf Blackburn.
Jane loved being around her grandkids, cooking and needlepoint. She was a member of Oak Hill Free Will Baptist Church.
She was surrounded by loved ones who will continue to honor her legacy by living their lives to the fullest. She pursued her savior and family with love. She finished well, what a beautiful testimony she left behind.
The simplest pleasures in life brought great joy to Jane. She loved a quiet evening with friends and family. She had an uncanny ability to find happiness in her daily activities. Her pleasant personality was contagious to everyone she met. She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She loved spending time in the kitchen, creating delicious meals for her family, and neighborhood children who would gather around the kitchen table for meals and encouragement. Everyone loved listening to Jane’s stories of her beloved years and encouraging words of wisdom that she led by example and her love for Christ. She was a faithful woman who loved the Lord, her family, church and community.
Jane was preceded in death by a son, Carl Eugene Grindstaff, and a great-granddaughter, Maleigha Audrey Blackwell.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Pastor Carl Grindstaff; four children, Angela Stonecipher and husband Johnny, Sheila McKinney and friend Doug Duncan and Jonathan Grindstaff and wife Sharay, all of Elizabethton, and Jenny Townsend and husband Bob, Johnson City; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and one on the way; and several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Darrell Blackburn.
A Service to Celebrate the Life of Jane Grindstaff will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Paul Grindstaff, Pastor Ed Moser and Pastor Caleb Grindstaff officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 31, in the Oak Hill Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery, Hampton. Active pallbearers will be Jonathan Grindstaff, John T. Grindstaff, Logan Grindstaff, Tommy Oliver, Ethan Townsend, D.J. Harris, Robbie Solomin, Nathanael Stonecipher, Andrew Stonecipher, Landon Duncan and Keydon Russell. Honorary pallbearers will be ministers of the Toe River Free Will Baptist Association, her church families at Oak Hill Free Will Baptist Church, East Fairview Free Will Baptist Church, St. John Free Will Baptist Church and other churches she had been associated with during her husband’s ministry.

Audrey Lois Roberts Lipford, 79, of 712 Carriger Avenue, Elizabethton, died Saturday, January 4, 2003 at the residence of a daughter, Angela
Markland, 2516 Bob Little Road, following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Dudley Justin and Blanche L. Crowe Roberts.
She was preceded in death by a son, James A. Lipford, three brothers, and
three sisters. Mrs. Lipford was a housewife.
Survivors include her husband, James H. "Dude" Lipford, Jr., of the home;
three daughters and two sons-in-law, Susan R. and Bob Ellison, Hampton;
Shelly Blevins and Angela and Larry Markland, all of Elizabethton; five
sons, Phillip A. Lipford, Nathan Mark Lipford, Kevin M. Lipford, Matthew
Lipford, and Mitchell Lipford, all of Elizabethton; one daughter-in-law,
Pat Lipford, Elizabethton; one sister, Clara Bo Miller, Fla.; fourteen
grandchildren, Keith Lipford, Lisa R. Cipy, Chad Richardson, Missy B.
Cowan, Tara Blevins, Beverly Ann Lipford, Phillip A. Lipford, Jr., Audrey
Bennett, Heather Bennett, Joshua Kevin Lipford, Brooke Lipford, Penny L.
Ward, Sherri Lipford and Carly Cowan. Five great-grandchildren and several
nieces and nephews also survive.

Carriger Avenue, Elizabethton, who died Saturday, January 4, 2003, will
be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, January 6, 2003 in the Riverside Chapel
of Tetrick Funeral Home, with Rev. Bud Malone officiating. Music will
be under the direction of Daniel Boner and J.P. Matheson. Graveside
service and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2003
in Happy Valley Memorial Park.

1050 August 2, 1939 ~ February 8, 2020 (age 80) Juanita Gourley, age 80, of Pond School Road in Kings Mountain, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, Kentucky. Born Wednesday, August 2, 1939 in Hazard, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Luther & Jennie Bell Gumm Richardson. Her loving husband, whom she married Tuesday, July 24, 1962, is Wilbur Gourley of Kings Mountain. Juanita was a homemaker and member of Pond Baptist Church.

Juanita loved her family dearly and enjoyed hearing about the successes of her family, especially her grandchildren. Juanita was always full of life. In fact, she would often be seen riding her motorcycle. She would always smile and laugh and enjoyed seeing others laugh as well. In fact, she would even love to often play practical jokes on others. Juanita also enjoyed sharing stories of her childhood.

In her spare time, Juanita enjoyed collecting antiques and going to yard sales, canning, gardening, reading, and watching westerns (especially John Wayne movies). Juanita also enjoyed cooking, making sure her family was always fed; and enjoyed making Christmas candy. She was an avid listener of bluegrass gospel music and The General Store on WPBK-FM.

In addition to her husband, Juanita leaves behind one son, David Gourley (Tina Marie) of Gravel Switch, Kentucky; two daughters, Lisa Lynn Shelley (Paul) of Kings Mountain, and Connie Sue Scott (Russell) of Floyds Knobs, Indiana; six grandchildren, Paul Shelley, Jr., Adam Shelley (Rebekah), Alexis Gourley, Angela Banta, Kacy Scott, and Jenny Scott; two great-grandchildren, Esther Shelley and Luke Shelley; one brother, Adrian Richardson of Kings Mountain; one sister, Viola Olinger (Richard) of Dayton, Ohio; and numerous extended family members and friends who mourn her passing.

In addition to her parents, Juanita was preceded in death by one brother, Franklin Richardson; and one sister, Betty Hatter.

Cremation Rites have been honored. A Private Graveside Memorial Service & Burial will take place in Double Springs Cemetery.
