    Sent on leave due to illness, the 37th's records indicate him to have died in Watauga Co., NC.. However family records say he died of disease and never reached home, which was in the Cove Creek area of western Watauga Co., NC. So it is unknown if his unmarked grave lies somewhere in Watauga Co., or elsewhere.

    George married Rachel McBride about 1855 in , Watauga County, North Carolina, North Carolina.     First husband reportedly named Ledbetter, (d.abt.1830).

    She ran away with Alfred Hilliard, originally from Guilford Co., NC ., who is said to have deserted his 1st wife for her, and they settled in western North Carolina, in what's now Beaverdam Twp., Watauga Co., NC.. They weren't legally "married" until many years later. [After all, or most, of their children were born.]

    They lived on Hilliard's Knob, near Forest Grove, Beaverdam Twp, Watauga Co., NC..

    Rachel died from being struck by lightning.
