Notes:

Jesse Calvin Church enlisted in the service of the United States
at Knoxville in the county of Knox, and State of Tennessee on
02/Feb/1864 as a Corporal promoted to Sergeant 03/Jul/1864 in Company M,
commanded by Captain Gillon O. Collins, in the 13th Regiment of
Tennessee Calvary Volunteers, commanded by Colonel John K. Miller in the
war of 1861 and was honorably discharged on or about 08/Sep/1865, as
will appear by his certificate of discharge which was placed in the
hands of Calvin Coles, Claims agent at Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co., North
Carolina for the purpose of obtaining additional bounty. Feb 1867.
That while in the service aforesaid, and in the line of his duty at the
town of Morristown, in the county of Grainger, and State of Tennessee
on or about 28/Oct/1864 in a charge upon a force of the enemy under
command of the Rebel General Vaughn, his foot having slipped from the
Stirrup he was thrown forward upon the horn of his saddle and he was
seriously injured , and hernia or rupture was produced
.......(illegible) protruding in such a manner as to ...... his whole
system impairing in a great degree his effieiency as a soldier, though
through much suffering he continued in the service until the .... of
the war, and by said injury he is rendered wholly incapable of making a
substinence by manual labor. That since leaving the service he has
resided in Johnson Co., TN and his occupation has been of a farmer.

Census found him in Wilkes Co., NC in 1850. 1860 in Johnson
Co., TN with Martha working as a Farmer. 1870 in Johnson Co. listed
as a Miller $100 personal property(?). In 1880 in Unicoi Co., with
Martha. According to Martha A. Stout Smith, he was a democrat. He
walked with a limp from war injuries. He was buried in Rankin or
Campbell Cemetery, Johnson Co., TN. Miss Eggers was a housekeeper and
Jessie married her after Martha died.

Probably was the son of Elijah, as listed in the 1994 IGI as William b.
1808. Found in 1820, 1850, 1860 Wilkes Co., NC census working as a
Preacher married to Sally. In 1860 he had land value of
$600/personal property $550. According to Martha A. Stout Smith, Billy
had slaves, land, money and lived in North Carolina. He was a preacher
and fair complected.

William married Sarah Lenderman on 22 Dec 1825 in Wilkes County, , , North Carolina. Sarah (daughter of Leonard L. Lenderman and Anna Fife\ Fyffe) was born on 17 Apr 1808 in Wilkes County, , , North Carolina; died on 17 Nov 1876 in Wilkes County, , , North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Sally was dark complected and was thought to be Black Dutch. (Grannie
Stout) The line is German - Deutsch. The family originally came from
the Black Forest Region of Germany. Sally probably considered herself
Black Deutsch because she came from the Black Forest of Germany.

The descendants of the Lenderman family were blue-eyed people with
brown or black hair. They look very much like the majority of the
people in the upper Rhine Valley, Germany. (Grayson Walker)

Found Daniel and Elizabeth with family in 1850 Wilkes Co. census, owned
no land, could not read or write. Biddie Watson (f) 57 b. Wilkes Co.
was living with the family with land value of $100.
