    Notes:

Nathaniel DeLoach was probably named after General Nathaniel Taylor, famous war hero and early settler of Northeastern Tennessee. Nathan began working in the iron foundaries operated by the Carter families when he was a young man. In the early days of these foundaries, much of the work was done by slave labor under the supervision of white foremen. At some point, Nathan DeLoach probably became one of these foremen. It is interesting to note that several of the slaves that were given their freedom by the Carters assumed the DeLoach surname. In the 1850 Carter County Census, Nathan DeLoach and his wife Margaret Atkins (King ?) are listed on the census takers worksheet next to Evilina B. Carter, the widow of Alfred Moore Carter, who was probably the wealthiest resident of Carter County at that time. This means that they were either living on the Carter Estate, or living in a next door house. The close relationship between the Carters and Nathan DeLoach is evident from other events. Nathan named the sons he had by Margaret Atkins after two of Alfred M. Carters sons: Samuel Powhatan Carter, who was a famous Civil War Union Army General, Commandant of the U.S. Naval Academy, and the only military officer in U.S. history to hold the rank of Army General and Navy Admiral. William Blount Carter, a graduate of Princeton University, a Presbyterian minister, an organizer of the Union Bridge Burners during the Civil War, and a member of the 1870 Constitutional Convention in Nashville. Following the death of Margaret Atkins, Nathan left the home he had inherited from his father to his son William. Following his marriage to Elizabeth Grindstaff, he bought land from William Blount Carter, who at that time was the executor of his mother's will. This land adjoined the farms of the other descendants of John DeLoach on the Old Siam Road in Carter County.

Nathaniel married Margaret Adkins about 1842. Margaret (daughter of Noah Adkins and Mima Adkins) was born in Wythe County, , , Virginia; died in May 1864 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 13.  Margaret Adkins was born in Wythe County, , , Virginia (daughter of Noah Adkins and Mima Adkins); died in May 1864 in Carter County, , , Tennessee.

    Notes:

There are reports from Roscoe DeLoach, Sr., and Charlotte Lance DeLoach that Margaret Atkins was married prior to wedding Nathan DeLoach.

In the 1840 Carter County census, there is a Margaret King who is the head of this household:

    Margaret King Males 1(0-5), 1(10-15)
    Females 1(0-5), 1(5-10), 1(20-30), 1(70-80)

In the 1850 Carter County Census listing for the Nathan DeLoach household, Joseph L. King, 9 years old, is listed following Nathan's sons Samuel and William. Margaret is 38. There is another King household in the 1850 Carter County census:

    Albert S. King 25 VA
    Elizabeth King 17 VA

Unlike the other households, this one does not have a marriage date listed, which would leave you to be believe that Albert and Elizabeth are siblings. If Margaret were the mother of Albert, Elizabeth and Joseph, she would only be 13 years older that Albert. Perhaps she was the second wife to the father of Albert and Elizabeth. So, all of this leaves open the questions, is this the same Margaret that married Nathan DeLoach, and if so, who was her first husband and what happened to him?

In 1860, Joseph King is living with Mary Kendrick, and Albert King appears to be married to a 40 year old Nancy..
