JOHNSON CITY - Margie Dean Grindstaff, age 92, of Johnson City, TN, passed away on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at the Waters of Johnson City. She was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Horace Monroe Ledwell and Mary Josephine Light Ledwell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of fifty years, William Paul “Bill” Grindstaff; one daughter, Sheron Boles; one granddaughter, Brittany Pritchard; one great-granddaughter, Kayla Goodman; one great-great-grandson, Mason Conner; two brothers, and one sister.

Margie had previously attended Keystone Freewill Baptist Church when her health allowed.

She is survived by her children, Kenneth Hodge, Barbara Furches, Cindy Abel, and Janis Swanner; her cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; two brothers, Richard Ledwell and Ron Ledwell; and extended family.

Committal Service and Interment will be held Thursday, February 23, 2023 at 11:00AM at Mountain Home National Cemetery with Chaplain Ron Land officiating. Pallbearers will be family.

In 1880 Robert and Rebecca lived in Cocke Co., TN.

Robert LEDWELL was a deponent in the Civil War Pension Claim of his brother-in-law, Josiah CHAVIS. Josiah stated that in Feb. 1890 Robert and John LEDWELL were both living in Hamblen Co, TN. Robert (30), John and Josiah all worked to together at the Embreville Iron Works (a furnace) in Washington Co, TN about 1866 -1870.

1872 Robert (35) & Josiah stopped work in Embreville and moved to near Bulls Gap, Hawkins Co, TN. Panthy went to S. Car.

20 February 1890 near Bull's Gap, Hawkins Co, TN, personally appeared before me Robert LEDWELL... "My age is 53 years occupation a laborer and P. O. address as given above. I am a brother-in-law to claimant and knew him from boyhood and was raised in the same neighborhood with him in Randolph Co, NC.
"He and I left Randolph Co, NC at the same time and we came together to this State about 1866 or 1867 and worked together at the Emmerville Iron Furnace in Washington Co, for about 5 years thereafter.
"We left Washington Co, at the same time and he and I have always lived _____ in the same neighborhood since we came over here about 18 years ago.
"Before the war claimant was one of the best men physically whom I ever saw.
"I saw him immediately after he came home from the army but was sick myself at that time and do not remember just how he looked at that time.
"But I know that he has never had any health since he was in the army and that he has always been complaining of the rheumatism since .
"I do not think I worked along with him after the war before we left North Carolina but I was a good deal in his company at that time ...

Thomas C. Moody moved to Johnson City, Washington County, Tennessee from Watauga County, North Carolina in about 1887. He and his family lived in 'the Jackson house' at the corner of West Main Street and Pactolus Avenue. He moved to Pulaski County, Kentucky and then to Canton, Ohio, in about 1928. In about 1931, he and his family moved back to Johnson City, Tennessee, and lived on Sidney Street.

Thomas married Mary Ellen Trivette on 13 Jun 1871 in Ashe County, , , North Carolina.
