WILLIAM M. TRIVETTE was born on Sunday, 26 Sep 1824 in northern Iredell Co., North Carolina. James Monroe was President of these United States at that time. Abraham Lincoln was a 15 year old boy living in southern Indiana and Robert E. Lee was a 17 year old boy who was about to receive an appointment to the West Point Military Academy.
William was the first of 10 know children born to Lazarus Trivette and Sarah "Sally" Cranfield who had been married on 04 Nov 1823.
In the 1850 Census taken on 3 Aug 1850, William, age 26, lists his occupation as “Wagon Maker.” He is still living with his parents. It was the norm in this era to live with your parents until you were married. On that date 8 of his 9 siblings were still in their parent’s household. In that census, their name was recorded as “Truit.”
On 01 Dec 1853, Justice of the Peace Thomas Holcomb married William, age 29, and Mary Amanda "Mandy" Cash, age 19, in Iredell Co., North Carolina.
William set to farming, and Amanda took care of the ever increasing number of offspring’s.
On 17 Jul 1860 Mr. A. S. Fraley arrived at William and Amanda’s farm to enumerate them for the 1860 Census. They are listed as living in the “District North of Hunting Creek” in Iredell Co., with “Eagle Mills” being their post office. William occupation is recorded as “Farmer” owning “$200” worth of real estate and having “$200” personal property. Amanda had already borne 4 children, and living with them is a 20 year old, “Emily Marler.”
The 1870 Census William Trivette had moved to “Union Grove Township, Iredell Co., North Carolina,” and now the Trivette family have 7 living children at home.
When the 1880 Census was taken on, 17 Jun of that year, William and his family were still living in “Union Grove Township, Iredell Co., North Carolina,” with 10 children living at home. Of course, William’s occupation is still listed as “Farmer.” His son Levi is listed at a “Carpenter,” while sons Jonathan, Rezin and Lazarus as show as “Works on the farm.” Some of William’s neighbors include, Jesse Tutterrow, age 64; the widow Catherine Hollis, age 45; William Hollis, age 28, the widow Elizabeth Tharpe, age 64; Jeremiah Myers, age 64; Jesse Campbell, age 56; the widow Sarah Gregory, age 31, and the widow Frances Campbell, age 26.
The 1900 Census, the last in which William and Amanda would appear, was taken at their farm on 4 Jun of that year. Four of their children were still living at home and a “Catherine Jefferson,” whose occupation is “Servant” is living with the family. The family still lives in “Union Grove Township, Iredell Co., North Carolina.” William’s occupation is still listed as “Farmer,” while both his son’s Lazarus and Nathan’s occupation is listed as “Teacher in school.” The occupation for William’s sons, William Jr and Pinkney is listed as “Farmer.”
After 49 years of marriage, William’s wife, Mary Amanda "Mandy" Cash Trivette, passed away on 06 Jan 1903 in Union Grove Township, Iredell Co., North Carolina and was laid to rest in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Union Grove, Iredell Co., North Carolina.
Then at the age of 84 years and 4 days, William M. Trivette passed away on 30 Sep 1908 in Union Grove Township, Iredell Co., North Carolina. In a time long before Death Certificate, there is no way to determine his cause of death. He was laid to rest next to his wife in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Union Grove, Iredell Co., North Carolina.
