On the evening of September 10, 2015, after a long courageous battle with respiratory problems, Lester Leon Hicks, age 73, left his Earthly residence in Elk Park, to enter into his Eternal Home in Heaven. He was surrounded by his family.
A native of Avery County, Leon was born April 22, 1942; and, was the eldest son of the late Norman and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Hicks of Elk Park.
In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by a beloved brother Roger Carroll Hicks; and, a nephew, Brian Stacie McKinney.
Leon was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ, in Roan Mountain, Tn. He was very strong in his Faith. Although, his health declined, his trust in the Lord never wavered.
He continued to witness to his family and friends. It was his heart's desire that everyone be saved!
Leon loved the outdoors. He was a life-long Farmer, earning the title Avery County Farm Family of the Year, in 1995. Farming was his passion. He enjoyed serving the County and surrounding areas with his local business, "Hump Mountain Apple House". He was a friend to all who knew him; displaying, a heart full of compassion and generosity. Off season, Leon had been a part-time truck driver for his friends Jack Hicks Trucking and H&H Trucking, of Elk Park.
Left to cherish his memory, is his wife Doris, of the home. She has been the love of his life and help-mate for the past fifty years. One son Jeff Hicks and his wife Melanie, of Elk Park. Also, one Grandson Logan Hicks, of whom was his pride and joy and his #1.
Leon will also be greatly missed by his two remaining brothers and three sisters: Arnold Hicks and wife Sharon, Jerry Hicks and wife Patty, a sister-in-law Peggy Hicks, all of Elk Park. A sister Elwanda Garland and husband Elisha, a sister Brenda McKinney and husband Charlie, all of Roan Mountain; and a sister Kay Hogan and husband Chris, of Elk Park. Leon has a host of nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews; all, of whom loved him dearly.
Celebration of Life for Leon Hicks, will be conducted Sunday, September 13, 2015 at 7:00 pm in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with Pastor Charlie McKinney, Jr., Rev. Chris McCoury, and Rev. Dave Atkins officiating. Interment will follow in the Richardson/Hicks Cemetery.
