He was the son of Christian Phillippi (abt. 1776-Nov. 23, 1843) and Catherine Dutton (abt. 1780- Oct. 9, 1826) David first married Justine Crigger Aug. 18, 1831 in Wythe County, VA. They had seven children before her death. David then married Jane Fry on Dec. 28, 1848 in Wythe County, VA. They moved to Johnson County, TN around 1855. David and Jane had a total of thirteen children together. David and Jane donated the land that is now the Phillippi Cemetery.
