Zilphia Jones lived adjacent to John Wesley Roten from 1860 to 1907, when they were married. The Ashe County, NC census records indicate that Zilphia had seven children out of wedlock while living nexr door to John Roten. After their marriage, many of her children assumed the Roten surname. It is very likely that John Wesley Roten and Zilphia were paramours, and that he was the father of Zilphia's children.
