HOLDS RITES FOR LILBURN BOWERS
Funeral services for Lilburn T. Bowers, 79, more familiarly known as "Uncle Lil" and one of the most prominent farmers in Carter County, who died Friday night at his home near Charity Hill following a long illness, will be conducted this afternoon at two o'clock in the Siam Baptist Church. The Rev. H. C. Hopkins assisted by the Rev. C. L. Bowden will officiate. Interment will be in the Bowers Cemetery near the home.
Mr. Bowers was an outstanding character in his community as well as a large landowner. He was active in church affairs and was a member of the Baptist church for more than fifty years.
He was born and reared near Siam, August 26, 1856, the son of the late Joseph and Emmaline Bowers, descendant of the early settlers in this section. He was married twice, first to Miss Martha Collins, who died Feb. 27, 1926. Later he was united in marriage to Miss Annie Garrison, who survives him, together with four children of the first marriage, Arnold Bowers and Mrs. D. E. Buck of Route 5 Johnson City, Mrs. J. C. Hyder and Mrs. J. L. Hyder of Elizabethton.
He is also survived by five grandchildren, one brother, Vol Bowers of Orlando, Florida; and one half brother, Robert Bowers of Elizabethton.
Active pallbearers will be Dr. G. G. Collins, Pat Heston, Will Bowers, Alfred Peters, Nelson Shell, Britton Randolph, Blevin Heaton and Delbert Holsclaw.
Flower bearers include the Misses Pearl Bowers, Ruby Lovelace, Hazel Ellis, Bertha Scalf, Carrie Scalf, Pearl Lovelace, Ruth Montgomery, Pauline Pierce, Bernice Heaton, Arcy Hardin, Frances Collins, Martina Hardin, Beulah Hardin, and Ruth Allen.

We George W. Farr and Henry Sims having been called by the Bed Side whereon Jonathan Hyder Deceased was lying this day before he died the 24 day of December 1863. And being specially called to take notice and witness his Last Will and Testament which was in Language as follows [to wit]:
I want my son J.O.L. Hyder and my Daughter Roda Hughes to have my Gray horse, my mule and my two horse wagons for there special benefit when I am dead and gone.
2nd. It is my desire and my will that all the remainder of my property of all kinds, my Land, money and every thing belonging to me be equally divided among all my children to wit: Benjamin Hyder, Ellen Taylors children, Jonathan H. Gilson O. Collins was a Union supporter during the Civil War, and took part in the destruction of bridges as a member of the 'Bridge Burners'. He and his brother Watson served in the Second East Tennessee Volunteer Infantry. He served briefly as the Carter County Registrar in 1872.

CAPTAIN GILSON O. COLLINS, CO. M.
Gilson O. Collins is a Carter county man, and remained steadfast to the Union
cause through many dangers and difficulties. Being a man of decided opinions
and with courage to assert and maintain them, he early lost favor with the
Confederate authorities. After assisting to burn the bridge at Union, or
Zollicoffer, as detailed elsewhere, and engaging in the Carter county
rebellion he fled to Kentucky and joined the 2d Tennessee Mounted Infantry and
served with that regiment until its capture, Nov. 6, 1863. Collins, at that
time a private soldier absented himself from his command on account of
striking a Federal officer for making disparaging remarks about Tennesseeans,
and though his absence was known and approved by Col. Carter he was marked on
his company rolls as a deserter. Since the war the facts were made known and
he received an honorable discharge from th? 2d Tennessee Infantry as well as
from the Thirteenth Tennessee Cavalry. Captain Collins was commissioned as
Captain March 22d, 1865, and assigned to duty with Company M. He was in
command of his company in the last Stoneman raid in pursuit of President
Davis. Captain Collins is still living near Valley Forge, Carter countv. Tenn.
