Therman Carroll Gentry

Notes:

Therman Carroll Gentry, age 97 of the Cold Springs Community in Mountain City, Tennessee passed away on Friday May 4th, 2018 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA. He was born July 30th, 1920 in the Johnson County to the late Joseph A. Gentry and Ella Smith Gentry. In addition to his parents he was predeceased in death by: a sister, Mina Gentry, and brothers: Selmar, Wade, Emory, Gaither, and Richard Dale.

He was a 50 year Mastor Mason of Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #243 F&AM.

He enjoyed playing old time music, working crossword puzzles, and spending spending time with his cattle and dogs.

Therman worked for 20 years as a foreman for T.V.A, he also had many years as a long distance truck driver.

Those left to cherish Therman's memory include, his wife, Evelyn Johnson Gentry, daughters: Carolyn Davis and husband, Jim of Rose Hill, Virginia, and Becky Gentry of Mountain City.

Sons: Ted and wife Janie Gentry of Mountain City, and Scott Gentry of Mountain City, TN. Six Grand – children and Nine Great-Grandchildren.

Memorial Service for Therman will be held Monday, May 14th 2018 at 2 PM in the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of the Hux & Lipford Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at 1 PM. Pastor Con Sauls to officiate.

Joseph married Sarah Ella Smith about 1902 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee. Sarah (daughter of Andrew Jackson Smith and Etta Mary Phillippi) was born on 18 Mar 1884 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee; died in Mar 1949 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Phillippi Cemetery, Highway 421, Johnson County, Tennessee. MRS. ELLA GENTRY... 71, wife of J. A. Gentry, died at her home the morning of March 14 after a long illness. She was a member of the Liberty Christian Church.
She is survived by her husband and the following children: Selmer of Wooster, O.; Wade, Emory, Gayther, Dale and Thurmond of Mountain City; Mrs. Mina Ellison of Todd, N.C.;. six brothers, Dave, Charley, Fred, Pete, and Don Smith, all of Mountain City.
Funeral was held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the home. Rev. R. T. Mabry was incharge.
Pallbearers and flower bearers were nieces and nephews.
Burial followed in Phillippi cemetery.

Andrew married Etta Mary Phillippi on 1 Oct 1874 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee. Etta was born on 6 Mar 1858 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee; died on 26 May 1946 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Phillippi Cemetery, Highway 421, Johnson County, Tennessee. Mrs. Etta Mary Smith, 88, died at her home, Rte. 1, Sunday night at 10:15 pm. She was a lifelong resident of Johnson County and a member of the Christian Church. She is survived by six daughters, Mrs. Ella Gentry, Mrs. Cora Nelson, Mrs. Carol Vickson and Mrs. Betty Maxwell of Mountain City, Mrs. Bella Jones of Shouns and Mrs. Lula Smith of Bristol; six sons, David, Fred, Charles and Pete Smith of Mountain City, and Wiley of Neva; two brothers, Andrew and William Phillippi of Indiana; 65grandchildren and 78 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from the Liberty Chrisitan Church Tuesday afternoon at 2 pm with Rev. Jim Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Wilson cemetery in Mountain City. Active pallbearers were the grandsons. The body was moved to the home of a daughter, Mrs. Betty Maxwell, Rte. 1, Monday afternoon.

General married Elizabeth Ann "Eliza" Rambo on 24 Mar 1842 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee. Elizabeth (daughter of Aaron Rambo and Harriett Wilson) was born on 6 Apr 1823 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 31 Mar 1902 in Johnson County, , , Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

He was originally buried in Smith Cemetery (No. 1), located in Carter County on the left bank of the Watauga River, upstream from Dry Branch, about 400 feet southeast of Hwy 67, on top of a high brushy ridge on property purchased by the T.V.A. from Gean Campbell. Twenty-two of the 23 graves were removed to six reinterment cemeteries.

In the original Smith Cemetery, these people were buried together in a row: Mary Smith, Daniel Smith, Hyliah J Smith (daughter), J. Henderson Smith (son), Lawson W. Smith (son).
