William married Lydian Winters about 1884. Lydian was born on 23 Oct 1855 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 28 Oct 1940 in , Avery County, North Carolina, ; was buried in Palmer Cemetery, , Avery County, North Carolina. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

Lydian's third marriage was to Clayton Palmer. Lydian and Clayton had nine children, Clifton, Walter, Etta, Joseph, Zora, May, Oscar and Noah.

Lydian also had two children from two previous relationships. Her first affair was with a Andrew Cooper and they had "Cart" (Cooper) Winters. I don't believe they ever married and her son took her maiden name.

Relationship two was to Monroe Hayes. Their son was William Martin Hayes. We found a marriage certificate for this union dated the day after the birth of their son. However, the marriage was short lived. Will Hayes was born in 1878 and Monroe was back living in his parents household in Carter County, TN in the 1880 Census. Will Hayes never had a relationship with his Hayes family during his lifetime. He was primarily raised by his grandparents, Martin Winters and Nancy Hicks Winters, after Lydian's marriage to Clayton Palmer.
