    Missing Man's Body Found Near Butler Home

    The body of 67-year-old N.H. McCloud was found near Butler Sunday, Dec. 23, 20 days after the retired Navy veteran was reported missing.

    The body was found 1-1/2 miles from the dock in the Campbell Hollow section about noon by the victim's brother, Harry McCloud. Officers surmised McCloud had apparently tried to take shelter since his body was partially covered by a log. The man's wallet and hat were found beside the body.

    An intensive search of the lake area was begun shortly after McCloud was reported missing, but was called off when officers received reports that the man might have gone to Georgia where his wife was staying.

    McCloud lived at Butler with a daughter, Mrs. Jean Trivette. She told officers her father had left $45 in a Bible before leaving and said he seemed "his usual self."

    McCloud was a member of the Pierce Baptist Church and the VFW Post 2166 in Elizabethton.

    Survivors include the widow, four daughters, Mrs. Fred Trivette of the home; Mrs. Donald Martin and Joyce McCloud, Chesterfield, Ind., Mrs. Herbert Pennington, Columbus, Ga.; and Lloyd McCloud of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Effie Wagner, Elizabethton, Mrs. Minnie Sweeney, Kingsport; three brothers, Walter McCloud, Elizabethton, Harry McCloud of Butler and Robert McCloud of Johnson City and nine grandchildren.

    Funeral services were conducted from Pierce Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, with Rev. Victor Broyles and the Rev. H.M. Slagle officiating.

    Burial was in Butler Memorial Cemetery with full military honors at graveside with the VFW Post 2166 in charge.

    Pallbearers were Worley, Ray and Woodrow Pierce, Cecil Oliver, James Williams, Walter P. Broyles, Clyde Dunn, and Howard Campbell.

    William McCloud, 70, died at his home at Butler on Wednesday night at 11 o'clock.
    Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at Cobb's creek Baptist church with Rev. James Gregg officiating. Interment will be in the Pierce Cemetery.
    Pallbearers will be selected from friends at the funeral.
    Mr. McCloud is survived by his widow, Ellen McCloud; four sons, Newton, Walter, Henry, Robert, three daughters, Mrs. Minnie Swaney, Miss Ina McCloud, Mrs. Effie Wagner, his mother, Mrs. Mary McCloud, age 96 years, of Elizabethton, one brother, Yancy McCloud, four sisters, Mrs. Lancaster, Mrs. Harry Shultz of Elizabethton, Mrs. Mary Lipford, Miss Ellen McCloud, 17 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

    Mrs. Mary Ellen McCloud, age 69, of Butler RFD number 3, died at her home after a short illness.
    Funeral services will be conducted from the Cobbs Creek Baptist church Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. James Gregg in charge. Interment will be in the Pierce cemetery.
    Survivors: four sons, Newton of the U.S. Navy; Walter, Fish Springs, Harry, of Butler and Robert McCloud of the U.S. Army; three daughters, Mrs. Minnie Swiney, Fordtown, Tenn.; Mrs. Effie Wagner, Elizabethton, and Miss Ina McCloud, Butler, Tenn.; also 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
    Mrs. McCloud was an active member of the Cobbs Creek Baptist church.
    Pallbearers were Millard Grindstaff, Earl Lipford, Claude Lipford, Archie Lipford, Buster Lipford and Fred Lipford.
    Flower bearers will be selected from friends attending the funeral.
    The body will be removed to the home of Harry McCloud in Butler, Tenn., Friday afternoon.

    STARLING RHYMER
    Starling Rhymer, age 66, died at his home, route 3, Butler, Tuesday morning at 4:40 after an illness of a year. He was a native of Carter county and a member of the Cobbs Creek Baptist church.
    Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Nora Rhymer; one daughter, Mrs. R. H. McCloud; five grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Sam Payne of Bristol; Mrs. Bob Feathers of Johnson City; Mrs. Rhoda Caldwell of Butler; Mrs. Nellie Byers of Virginia.
    Funeral services will be conducted from the Cobbs Creek church Thursday afternoon at two o'clock with the pastor of the church in charge. Burial will be made in the Butler cemetery.
    Active pallbearers and flower bearers will be selected from friends attending the funeral.

    Notes:

    James McCloud was born around 1847 and grew up near Butler in Johnson County, TN. He was the son of Isham McCloud (aka Isom or Isam) and Mary "Polly" Fair McCloud. He was the grandson of John and Nancy McCloud (enumerated in the 1810-1830 Wilkes Co, NC Census) .

    James enlisted in the Union Army on September 22, 1863 and served as a Private in Company I of the 13th TN Calvary under Captain Samuel E. Northington. He was honorably discharged on September 5, 1865. (James had four brothers who also served in the Union Army: Alfred McCloud (Pvt. Comp G, 13th TN Calvary; Tennessee C. McCloud (Company I, 13th TN Calvary); Joseph R. McCloud (Pvt. G, 13th TN Calvary); and William B. McCloud (Comp. H, 4th TN Infantry).

    After the War, James returned to Johnson County and married Mary Walker. They had eight children prior to his death on February 18, 1890. James was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic.

    Note: James' parents, Isham and Mary, married in Wilkes Co, NC on April 17, 1833 and moved to Johnson Co, TN shortly thereafter. They are shown in Johnson Co, TN Census records from 1936-1970. In 1880, they were living in Watauga Co, NC (now Avery Co, NC). Their date of death and burial location have not been confirmed.
