John, was born in France of English ancestry and came with Lafayette's sol diers as a drummer boy of sixteen years. He stayed until the Revolutiona ry War was ended, but when Lafayette's soldiers were about to return, Jo hn hid himself in a flour barrel at Philadelphia and escaped. There he joi ned a whaling ship and went with it two years, after which he apprentic ed himself to a cabinet maker for seven years in Philadelphia. It becomi ng rumored that the French were about to search the city for deserters, Jo hn set out for North Carolina and reached the head of the Yadkin, whe re he met and married Easter Hawkins.
