    Notes:

    Born in Rowan Co., NC, the son of Joseph and Eve Bowers Mast. He married Susannah (Susan) E. Harmon on 7/14/1808 in Ashe Co., NC. They were the parents of 14 known children: David, Noah, Eli J., Leason, Elizabeth, Mary, Charlotte, Malinda, Caroline L., Emeline, Joseph Harrison, John Allen and Finley Patterson Mast.

    John established the Sugar Grove post office in March, 1837. He was the first postmaster there, serving from 1837 to at least 1853. This post office is the oldest one still in existence in Watauga Co., NC and was formed when Watauga Co. was still Ashe Co.

    In addition to their own children, John and Susan raised two of their nephews, Council and Goulder Harmon. These boys were left in their care when their mother Sabra Hicks Harman, daughter of Samuel & Sarah Hix and widow of Andrew Harman, left for Illinois with their uncle, Duke Ward, husband of Susan's sister, Elizabeth Harman Ward.
