    Preacher Jerry McCoury, 64, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, September 21, 2015, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Jerry was born in Avery County, N.C., but had lived most of his life as a resident of Roan Mountain, Tenn. He was born on August 10, 1951, a son of the late Bynum and Mabel Freeman McCoury. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Dean McCoury. Jerry was a United States Navy veteran, having served during peacetime. He retired from the Tennessee Department of Transportation, after 45 years of service. He was a preacher, having pastored at Mount Gilead Baptist Church in North Carolina for 27 years, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Roan Mountain. Jerry was also a staff member of Victory Bible Institute in Roan Mountain. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 42 years, Sherry Phillips McCoury, of the home; his daughter, Heather McCoury, also of the home; his son, Joshua McCoury, of Roan Mountain; two sisters, Shirley Dickenson, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Lavana Casterlin, of Mississippi; and twin granddaughters, Eowyn McCoury and Savannah McCoury, both of Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A service to honor and celebrate the life of Preacher Jerry McCoury will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 24, at Calvary Baptist Church, Roan Mountain, with Pastor Tull Oaks and Rev. Jerry Honeycutt officiating. Music will be under the direction of Pastor Doug Bare. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m., prior to the service at the church, or at the residence at anytime. The graveside service will follow in the Freeman Cemetery in Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be selected from Jerry's fellow Pastor friends. Honorary pallbearers will be his fellow employees of the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

    Mr. McCoury was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Montie and Savannah Callahan McCoury. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mabel Louise McCoury, nine brothers, Bernie, Walter, Ira, Ernest, Homer, Ray, George, Warren and William, and three sisters, Rosie, Vernie and Lucy.
    Mr. McCoury was a member of Roan Mountain First Baptist Church and a member of the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge. He was retired from the Carter County Sheriff's Department and Roan Mountain State Park. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

    The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home or other times at the residence of his son, Jerry McCoury, 120 Old Rock Quarry Road, Roan Mountain. The graveside service and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 5, at Freeman Cemetery, Roan Mountain.

    Mabel Louise McCoury, age 85, formerly of U.S. Highway 19E, Roan Mountain, died Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at Pine Ridge Care Center, Elizabethton following a lengthy illness.
    Mrs. McCoury was a Carter County native and the daughter of the late Stokes and Nora Caldwell Freeman. She was a member of Roan Mountain First Baptist Church. Mrs. McCoury was a housewife and former employee of North
    American Rayon Corporation.
    She was preceded in death by three brothers, Clyde Freeman, Roy Freeman, James Freeman, and a sister, Ethel Stout. Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Bynum McCoury, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold Dean and Kathy McCoury, of Marianna, Fla.; Bynum Jerry and Sherry McCoury, of Roan Mountain; two daughters and one son-in-law, Shirley Mae Dickason, of Virginia
    Beach, Va.; Lavana Sue and Mike Smith, of Memphis; 10 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; several nieces and nephews; a special niece and her daughter, Martha Shook and Christina, both of Banner Elk, N.C.; three special cousins, Mildred Stout, of Canton, Ohio; Marybelle Lyons, of Roan Mountain, and Marie Hagie, of Roan Mountain. Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, is in charge of arrangements.

    MCCOURY -- The funeral service for Mabel Louise McCoury, age 85, formerly of U.S. Highway 19E, Roan Mountain who died Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at Pine Ridge Care Center, Elizabethton will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 19, 2003 at Tetrick Funeral Home Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain with Pastor Richard Stout and Pastor Gary Perkins officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The graveside service and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2003 at Freeman Cemetery, Roan Mountain.
