    Richard L. Eggers, age 91, a well known resident of Jerry Lane, Abingdon, VA went to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 10, 2004 in Johnston Memorial Hospital. He was born August 19, 1912 in Zionsville, North Carolina, a son of the late William Claude Eggers and the late Emma Miller Eggers. He and his family moved to Virginia in December, 1923. He attended elementary schools in Mabel, North Carolina, and Lodi and Meadowview, Virginia. He attended Greenfield High School and was a graduate of Rich Valley High School. He was a former truck driver, a licensed insurance adjuster, and for many years was the owner of Eggers Insurance Agency in Abingdon. He was a salesman for Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon for many years and was a retired farmer. He was the last male charter member of the Abingdon Bible Church where he had served as an Elder, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher and Sunday School Superintendent. He had attended Greendale Chapel for the past several years. He loved baseball, was a member of the Greenfield High School Baseball Team during high school and later served as a coach for the Moose Team of the Babe Ruth League and helped lead the team to a state championship. He was a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, McCabe Lodge No. 56 for over 50 years. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in Japan. He had a great love for the Lord, reading, music, and traveling. He and his family sang in a Gospel quartet for several years and had a Sunday morning program on WOPI radio. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, James G. Eggers and R. Glenn Eggers; three sisters, Pearl Eggers Jones, Bonnie Whiteaker Nash and Edith Compton; and a granddaughter, Kim Lotts Campbell.

    Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Dora Mae Jones Eggers; one daughter, Phyllis Eggers Lotts and husband K. W. (Wick) Lotts of Abingdon; two sons, Richard Larry Eggers and wife Jo of Buchanan, Virginia, and the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers and wife Dorinda of Abingdon; Grandchildren, Laura Beth Greer of Abingdon, and Robbie Schlosser and wife Sandra of Roanoke, Virginia; three Great-Grandchildren, Josh Campbell of Lexington, Virginia, and Aaron Greer and Sarah Greer, both of Abingdon; one sister, Mary Lois (Tooty) Rutledge of Abingdon; three brothers-in-law, Charles Jones of Abingdon, Calvin Jones and wife Kathy of Abingdon, and Erwin Compton of Kingsport, Tennessee; one sister-in-law, Myrtle A. Jones of Abingdon; several nieces and nephews including Charles F. Whiteaker to whom he served as a father figure. He is also survived by a host of friends.

    Funeral services for Richard L. Eggers will be conducted at 2:30 P.M. Sunday in the Greendale Chapel with the Rev. Jerry A. Eggers, the Rev. Paul Bufford, and the Rev. Paul Ketron officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Charles F. Whiteaker, Bill Jones, Dick Rutledge, John Rutledge, Gail Rutledge, Eddie McConnell, Zane Pierce, and Bobby Barr. Honorary pallbearers will be Rev. V. N. Phillips, Rev. Doug Findley, Rev. Bob McCormick, additional nephews, men of the Abingdon Bible Church, men of Greendale Chapel and friends.

    Zionville Lady Dies Suddenly

    Widow of Richard Eggers succumbs to Apoplexy. Burial Thursday. Operator of Sugar Grove Telephone Office for years.

    Mrs. Callie Eggers, 64 years of age, died at the home of Mrs. Sarah Grogan of Zionville, on Wednesday, February 3rd, following an attack of apoplexy.

    Funeral Services were conducted from the Zionville Church, of which deceased was a faithful member, on Thursday by Rev. R. C. Eggers, pastor and the body was laid to rest in the nearby cemetery.

    Mrs. Eggers was the widow of Richard Eggers, who died thrity-five years ago, and had spent her entire life in the county. For many years she was telephone operator at the Sugar Grove office. Mrs. Eggers was favorably known by a large number of acquaintances and general sorrow was caused by her unexpected passing.
