On 18 April 1890, Emily Guy filed a suit to claim her dower from her deceased husband John C. Guy. The defendants in the suit were her daughter Martha E. Guy Trivett and her husband William Grant Guy, her son John C. Guy, Jr., and her daughter Rebecca Ann Guy, In the suit, she stated that Horton Guy and Martha E. Guy Trivett were the only lawful heirs of her husband John C. Guy. She further stated that John C. Guy, Jr. and Rebecca Ann Guy were interested parties to the suit. Her request was for one third of a tract of land on the Watauga River, and all houses and out buildings on the property, that was conveyed to her husband John C. Guy, Sr. by her father J. M. Smith on 2 Dec 1861. Her request for the dower was approved by a jury on 24 April 1890.
