    Notes:

FLORENCE, SC — Our dear mother, Eva Jobe Greer, went home to the arms of her Lord and Savior on Sunday, September 6, 2015, at the age of 101 years!

She was born in Avery County, North Carolina on July 17, 1914, the daughter of the late D. K. Jobe and Nell Ashley Jobe. She was especially proud of her family's illustrious heritage in East Tennessee and Western North Carolina. A direct descendant from the marriage of John and Rebecca Rolfe (AKA Pocahontas), she also was a descendant of Joshua Jobe, who held one of the earliest land grants to settle Cades Cove, Tennessee. His son, Dr. Abraham Jobe, was a pioneer physician, agent to the Indians, and entrepreneur. He was instrumental in the development of ET & WNC Railroad.

Mom treasured fond memories of her own father, David Kenneth Jobe's long career as a conductor on Tweetsie. Two of her great uncles, Robert Love Taylor and Alf Taylor, each served as Governor of the great state of Tennessee. Both were eloquent orators and fiddle players, and their colorful campaign gained notoriety as the "War of the Roses". One was a staunch Republican and the other a Democrat.

Mom enjoyed life to the fullest and at her own pace. After her children were in school, she took a course for nursing aides and sometime later obtained her LPN license, working several years in that job. Her interests were many and varied, including fishing on Santee, often beating Dad, who considered himself a master fisherman. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles which she did daily up until the end. She didn't answer the phone if anyone dared call during Jeopardy or when a Billy Graham crusade was on television.

Many a doomed houseplant found new luxuriant life in her hands. Dad gave her the nickname "Lightening" years ago. Besides giving her sons-in-law a comfortable way to address her, it fit perfectly since she never seemed to get in a hurry, but things still got done. Her daughters can attest to that. When one of us needed a new dress for some special occasion, we would get anxious then panic when the due date drew closer and closer. The beautiful finished dress would (miraculously to us) be hanging in the closet at the last minute.

Mom had read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation four times. She silently recited Psalms 139:1-12 each night before sleeping soundly. Her favorite hymn was "Because He Lives". One of the blessings in her life was the opportunity to visit the Holy Land at age 60, with her daughter, Patty.

Mom was always the first to get a joke, especially if it was on her. During a marathon game of Scrabble, lasting until the wee hours, she had defeated several contenders. The next opponent made the word "egg". "EGG", she scoffed, "What's that"? We never let her live it down.

She met our Dad while swimming at the Holly Hole in Elk River in North Carolina. She was 12 and he was 14, and they were smitten at first sight. They were married 5 years later.

Mom loved nature and was so unthreatening that little rabbits would play around her chair when she was outside reading. Once a lizard rested on her forearm and she gently stroked it, commenting that they were as curious as we were. She enjoyed a daily visit with a squirrel on the window sill of her room at Bethea. It would peek in to see if she was sitting in her chair.

She adored her sons-in-law, Harry Street, Bob Penny and Ralph Driggers. Each one considered himself her very favorite.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hodge Greer, in 1983; a brother, D.K. Jobe, II in Elizabethton, Tennessee; a sister, Juanita Farthing in Virginia Beach, Virginia; and a daughter, Jean Penny of Florence, South Carolina,

She is survived by a son, Jack E. Greer and his wife, Delores of Lexington Park, Maryland; two daughters, Patty Street of Johnson City, Tennessee, and Gayle Driggers and her husband Ralph of Pawleys Island, South Carolina; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

We realize how very blessed we are to have had this amazing lady in our lives for so long and are able to celebrate her long, full life.

Celebration of Life funeral service will be held in the Chapel of her beloved Bethea Baptist Home, 157 Home Ave, Darlington, SC at 3:00 PM on Thursday, September 10, 2015, with Pastor Jeff Cockrell presiding.

    A private burial will follow.
