Notes: Nathaniel DeLoach was probably named after General Nathaniel Taylor, famous war hero and early settler of Northeastern Tennessee. Nathan began working in the iron foundaries operated by the Carter families when he was a young man. In the early days of these foundaries, much of the work was done by slave labor under the supervision of white foremen. At some point, Nathan DeLoach probably became one of these foremen. It is interesting to note that several of the slaves that were given their freedom by the Carters assumed the DeLoach surname. In the 1850 Carter County Census, Nathan DeLoach and his wife Margaret Atkins (King ?) are listed on the census takers worksheet next to Evilina B. Carter, the widow of Alfred Moore Carter, who was probably the wealthiest resident of Carter County at that time. This means that they were either living on the Carter Estate, or living in a next door house. The close relationship between the Carters and Nathan DeLoach is evident from other events. Nathan named the sons he had by Margaret Atkins after two of Alfred M. Carters sons: Samuel Powhatan Carter, who was a famous Civil War Union Army General, Commandant of the U.S. Naval Academy, and the only military officer in U.S. history to hold the rank of Army General and Navy Admiral. William Blount Carter, a graduate of Princeton University, a Presbyterian minister, an organizer of the Union Bridge Burners during the Civil War, and a member of the 1870 Constitutional Convention in Nashville. Following the death of Margaret Atkins, Nathan left the home he had inherited from his father to his son William. Following his marriage to Elizabeth Grindstaff, he bought land from William Blount Carter, who at that time was the executor of his mother's will. This land adjoined the farms of the other descendants of John DeLoach on the Old Siam Road in Carter County. Nathaniel married Margaret Adkins about 1842. Margaret (daughter of Noah Adkins and Mima Adkins) was born in Wythe County, , , Virginia; died in May 1864 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
