WILLIAM M. SCALF
William M. Scalf died at his home on the Siam road this morning at 6:00 a.m., after been in declining health for several months.
Last rites will be conducted from the home Friday morning at two o'clock with the Rev. Arthur Griffin assisted by Rev. H. C. Hopkins officiating. Burial will be in the Hyder Cemetery.
Mr. Scalf was 72 years of age and had been a life long resident of this city. He was a member of the East Side Baptist Church.
He is survived by one son, Cameron Scalf, and one daughter, Mrs. Bertie Estep; one sister, Miss Sarah Scalf; then grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be Horace Broome, Charlie Deloach, Egbert Deloach, John Treadway, Henry Russell, Harrison Johnson.

The 1870 Carter County Census shows a son born in about 1862 named Nathaniel. He is not listed in any following civil records. The 1880 census lists a daughter named Nellia born in about 1861. In the 'Carter County, Tennessee Marriage Records, 1796-1870', an abstract by Goldene Fillers Burgner, the following marriage record is listed: DeLoach, Nettie to W.M. Scalf 24 December 1885 Dawn Peters has seen this record and believes the nameshould be Nellie. In the 1910 Carter County census, there is the following enrty: Scalf William 50 Nellie 45 W.C. 19 Bertha 17 In the Carter County Death Records is a listing for Nettie Scalf, born 1865, died 12 November 1934. Parents were Thomas DeLoach and Perlina Oliver. Based upon the above, I conclude that the 1870 census is erroneous in listing Nathaniel as a son. The given name for this child may have been Nathanielle, with a nickname of Nellie or Nellia. This is the way that the child of Thomas DeLoach and Perlina Oliver who was born in about 1862 will be carried in this record.

MRS. NETTIE SCALF
Mrs. Nettie Scalf, age 63, wife of William Scalf, died at her home on the Charity Hill road Monday evening at 7 p.m., after a short illness. Death was caused by an attack of asthma. She was a life long member of the Baptist church.
Survivors are her husband; one son, Cameron Scalf, and one daughter, Bertie.
Funeral services will be conducted from the residence, Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Hamp Hopkins officiating.
Interment will be in the Hyder Cemetery.

SAMUEL TURNER
Last rites for Samuel L. Turner, age 61, who died at his home, 615 Pine street, Thursday morning at 10 o'clock following a brief illness, were held this afternoon from the Freewill Baptist church at 2:30 with the Rev. Clarence Howington officiating. Interment was in the family cemetery on Siam road.
Mr. Turner had been special merchant policeman for the past few years, and was familiarly known as "Poss." He was a native of Carter county.
Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Joe Bowers; three sons, Noah, Jack and Howard; three sisters, Mrs. Dave Crumley, Mrs. Will Estep, Mrs. John Deloach; one brother, John Turner; thirteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers were Roby Mast, Hacker Carriger, Maples Carriger, Gus Crumley, Sam Fair, B. A. Lipford.

MRS. S. L. TURNER
Funeral services for Mrs. S. L. Turner, age 60, who died at her home on Pine street Saturday evening, will be held from the Freewill Baptist Church this afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Rev. Clarence Howington, assisted by Rev. Mack Hodges will officiate. Burial will be made in the Fairview Cemetery.
Pallbearers: B. A. Lipford, W. B. Edens, Bob Ball, O. C. Crow, Hampton Hyder, and Hacker Carriger.
Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Joe Bowers, three sons, Noah, Jack, and Howard Turner; two sisters, Mrs. Eva Goodwin, and Mrs. Bill Bowers; also 13 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

A birth certificate, or other civil record, which proves that Thomas was the son of John DeLoach has not been found. He is listed as such based upon the following circumstantial evidence: The 1840 Sullivan County Census lists John DeLoach with two sons between the age of 20-30. Thomas, and probably Nathan, could have been these sons. In the 1850 and 1860 Carter County censuses, Thomas has the household adjacent to John. There are no other DeLoach males listed in Northeastern Tennessee which could have been the father of Thomas. In the 1880 Carter County census, Thomas lists his father as being born in South Carolina. John was born in South Carolina.

Thomas married Perlina M. Oliver on 6 Oct 1842 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Perlina (daughter of George R. Oliver and Susannah White) was born in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died after 1910 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Siam Road, Elizabethton, Carter County, Tennessee. The name of Perlina is spelled differently is almost every civil record concerning her. The spelling P E R L I N A will be used for this record. This comes from the records of Jackie and Dawn Peters of Elizabethton, TN. Jackie is a descendant of the Oliver family of Northeastern Tennessee, as is Perlina. According to Jackie's records, Perlina's parents were George R. Oliver and Susannah White. His GEDCOM has been imported to show the ancestry of Perlina. The records of Albert Grindstaff, Independence, Missouri, also lists this same lineage. Census records indicate that Perlina's DOB was between 1820 and 1830; it was probably 1825 as shown on the 1850 and 1900 censuses. She is listed on the following Carter County censuses: 1850 1860 1870 1880 1900 Paulina 25 Polina 33 Palena 50 Pulina 50 garbled 75 In the 1850 thru 1880, she is listed as the wife of Thomas. In the 1900 Carter County census, she is in the household of her son, William DeLoach, and his wife, Frances Oliver. The Carter County Quarterly Minutes for January 1902 include a court order awarding Pliny DeLoach $4.00 as a Pauper Present.
