Generation: 3

  1. 6.  Thomas Elrige Williams was born on 20 Sep 1852 in Florida, , , ; died on 25 Dec 1913 in Athens, , Henderson County, Texas.; was buried in Post Oak Cemetery, , Henderson County, Texas.

    Notes:

came to Tx from Dothan,Houston,Al. Moved to Guadalupe, maybe Bell Co., Falls Co. & then Henderson Co., Tx.

It was said the ancestors of Thomas Elrige Williams originally came from England. They were carpenters, ship-builders and musicians. Supposedly they came to the U.S., aboard a ship built by them. He owned a store in Luverne, Crenshaw Co., Al. He was a Methodist minister. (The previous statements were made to Alfred Williams by Martha E. DeLoach Williams. She lived with the family of Lonnie J. (Pat) Williams.
Thomas Elrige was born in Fl., then moved to Al. In Crenshaw Co. In 1872 a marriage was performed by him, or his father, for Mary Olive DeLoach and John Highsmith.
This Williams family came to Guadalupe Co. in 1895, according to Boonie Williams Estes. Willie Sims said they came to Bell County in Texas in 1894. Lonnie J. always said they came to Texas when he was 4, that would have been 1893 or 1894. They were there in 1900 census. In 1902 they bought a farm in the Willow Springs Community from the Sheltons. I have been told Thomas Elrige ran a grocery store there until buying the farm at Willow Springs in 1902 from the Shelton's. Also have been told he was pastor of a Methodist church in the vicinity of Don Norman's Welding Shop & First Nat'l drive-in Bank. On 1910 census Thomas E., Martha, Lonnie J & Leona, along with Mellie Willis, Allie, Alma, & Earl Byron, were living on W. Corsicana St. in Athens, Texas. I do wonder if this isn't the time he owned the store. I have a book for 1910 that has charge accounts in it for such things as seed, mules, wagons, etc. LaVerne (Mutt) Williams Rodgers

Thomas married Martha Ellen (Babe) DeLoach on 3 Nov 1872 in Crenshaw County, , , Alabama. Martha (daughter of William DeLoach and Sarah W. Sims) was born on 28 May 1853 in Probably Talbot, , , Georgia; died on 30 Jul 1945 in Malakoff, , Henderson County, Texas.; was buried in Post Oak Cemetery, , Henderson County, Texas. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 7.  Martha Ellen (Babe) DeLoach was born on 28 May 1853 in Probably Talbot, , , Georgia (daughter of William DeLoach and Sarah W. Sims); died on 30 Jul 1945 in Malakoff, , Henderson County, Texas.; was buried in Post Oak Cemetery, , Henderson County, Texas.

    Notes:

Martha DeLoach had a bible that I know existed when Lonnie J. (Pat) applied for Social Security. The bible could not be used to certify his age because his name was listed as Patrick. All of the family stated that his name was always Lonnie J. and that Pat was a nickname. When Grandma Williams died, the bible was given to her daughter, Mellie, and was there when my dad applied for his social security. When Allie died, no bible was found. LaVerne (Mutt) Williams Rodgers.

Generation: 4

  1. 14.  William DeLoach was born on 5 Mar 1815 in Marion District, , , South Carolina (son of Mary Ellen (DeLoach)); died on 1 Dec 1899 in Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery, , Covington County, Alabama; was buried in Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery, , Covington County, Alabama.

    Notes:

The father of William DeLoach died aboard ship coming from France. William was born aboard ship according to Mary Ellen DeLoach Williams's obituary; however, most of the stories heard are that he was born after his mother arrived in S. C. The U. S. census all have S.C. as his birthplace. We have 2 different birthdays for him 1811 and 1815. The 1811 date would really be needed if he married Lillian DeBorkan in 1831. The 1815 goes along with U.S. census. We have found a note with the 1815 date and born in Marion District, died Dec. 1, 1889. On this note is also "sister-Emily DeLoach born April 5, 1847, died Sept 1920, age 71 year, 5 mths, 2 days. Gone but not forgotten". On the 1880 census William lists his father born in Al. & his mother Va. This would change the folklore about his father coming from France and dying immediately. We do know this is our great-grandfather's grave because his grandson William Arthur Williams lived in Covington Co., Al. when he was young and had visited the cemetery. His son Percy Giles Williams, who is alive in 2000, recalls taking his father from Texas to Alabama. They visited that grave.

There has been talk about Williams's death and where to bury him. His wife was not about to let him be buried by that other woman. Was that other woman, his second wife Sarah? His first wife Lillian died In S. C. in 1837. He left his children there and never returned.

Since I wrote the above, I have discovered William DeLoach married a third woman. The above Emily married William on Nov. 9, 1879 at her mother's residence. E. Dozier was J. P., Bondman was P J. Thrower. Emily Owens was her name at the time. I do not know if Owens was her maiden name or if she had been married previously. Crenshaw County, Al. marriages Book B-page 413

March 3, 1997 letter from Joyce English, P. O. Box 309, Rutledge, Al. 36071. "I went to the Pilgrim Rest Cemetery this morning and here is what I found. About 75 ft. from the gate at the County Road 77, about 1 mile south of Dozier, in Covington County. Two stones that read: Wm. Deloach born in Marion Dist. S. C. 3-5-1815 Died 12-1-1899. His grave had a concrete slab over the top of grave. His stone had been broken into four pieces, someone had laid it on top of the slab, and placed it back together except one piece was missing. There was enough left to get readings from. It was approx. 3 foot tall with a engravings : Open Bible with script written Holy Bible, under that was a Masonic emblem. About two foot from his right was a grave which was Emily DeLoach Born 4-5-1849 Died 9-7-1920 age 71 yr. 5 mo. 2 days "Gone but not forgotten" at the top of the stone was written (SISTER). In between their graves was another stone which said Born 9-5-1892 Died 12-31-1904. It was broken. The top was missing which had the name on it. It could have been another stone from another grave because it was laying about middle way of both their graves, turned opposite from theirs. P.S. I have been to that grave & have pictures of all stones. Mutt Did William & EMILY have CHILDREN? I saw a deed that had William DeLoach on it and it was dated after Wm. died. Emily also bought land and it was deeded to her and her heirs. This was Crenshaw Co., Al.

    Notes:

letter from sister, V. R. Taylor to M.E.Williams talks about Ma in negative tone

Family history had her the granddaughter of Andrew Jackson, President of U. S. That is not true. Andrew Jackson had no children of his own. He adopted a son and named him Andrew Jackson Jr. and he adopted a niece of his wife. I also have a note that she might be the daughter of Andrew Jackson's uncle. I do not have the facts of that straightened out yet. I have records showing Andrew's father was named Andrew and records from the Daughters of the American Revolution showing his uncle's name was Andrew. Have not discovered the grandchildren of the uncle. I did discover her mother was Susan Jackson and Susan married Frederick Sims in Baldwin County, Ga. I am looking for a will of the Jackson's to discover who were the parents of this Susan. There were many Jacksons in that area of the time and I understand there are still lots of Sims & Jacksons in all the surrounding areas. I do have a slip of paper showing William DeLouch claimed land won in a lottery by Frederick Sims and his wife Susan, who was a widow at the time the land was claimed. I believe Sarah had a brother Fred because Bud and Austin Sims of the Falls Co., Texas area were cousins to the children of William & Sarah Sims DeLoach. Bud moved to Waco and I visited in their home in the 1940's. T. C. thinks Bud had a brother named RED. July, 2000 I have discovered Red was Austin C. Sims. He has a great-granddaughter in Chilton, Falls Co., Texas. Also, our grandmother Sarah was supposed to be related to the Lee's. Her daughter, Mary Olive (Aunt Sissy,) who lived until she was 97, (lived until about 1947) told the story of working in the Officer's club during the Civil War and meeting Robert E. Lee. They discussed their common ancestors. I do have a paper on a William Lea and Frederick Sims. I have forgotten what it was about.
Also, there was a lady and her brother that lived in Beaumont, Texas that were related to us. My dad lived with them during War II. Her name was Mary Price and her brother was Tom. He was married to his niece Ora Mae Payne, but they divorced and had no living children. Mary or Tom owned some land around Jackson's Chapel, south of Malakoff, Henderson Co., Texas; but, they lost it to a squatter. The land was known to the local residents as the Judge Lee Land. (I have discovered the parents of Tom & Mary. Their mother was a Sarah Sims & we think a granddaughter of Frederick Sims & Susan Jackson.) There was a law suit over that, but I have not found the papers as of now. I wrote Talbot Co., Ga. for a marriage license for Sarah & William DeLoach, but did not receive a reply.
