8. | Jesse Calvin Church was born about Mar 1833 in Wilkes County, , , North Carolina (son of Rev. William B. "Billy" Church and Sarah Lenderman); died on 25 Aug 1908. Notes:
Jesse Calvin Church enlisted in the service of the United States
at Knoxville in the county of Knox, and State of Tennessee on
02/Feb/1864 as a Corporal promoted to Sergeant 03/Jul/1864 in Company M,
commanded by Captain Gillon O. Collins, in the 13th Regiment of
Tennessee Calvary Volunteers, commanded by Colonel John K. Miller in the
war of 1861 and was honorably discharged on or about 08/Sep/1865, as
will appear by his certificate of discharge which was placed in the
hands of Calvin Coles, Claims agent at Wilkesboro, Wilkes Co., North
Carolina for the purpose of obtaining additional bounty. Feb 1867.
That while in the service aforesaid, and in the line of his duty at the
town of Morristown, in the county of Grainger, and State of Tennessee
on or about 28/Oct/1864 in a charge upon a force of the enemy under
command of the Rebel General Vaughn, his foot having slipped from the
Stirrup he was thrown forward upon the horn of his saddle and he was
seriously injured , and hernia or rupture was produced
.......(illegible) protruding in such a manner as to ...... his whole
system impairing in a great degree his effieiency as a soldier, though
through much suffering he continued in the service until the .... of
the war, and by said injury he is rendered wholly incapable of making a
substinence by manual labor. That since leaving the service he has
resided in Johnson Co., TN and his occupation has been of a farmer.
Census found him in Wilkes Co., NC in 1850. 1860 in Johnson
Co., TN with Martha working as a Farmer. 1870 in Johnson Co. listed
as a Miller $100 personal property(?). In 1880 in Unicoi Co., with
Martha. According to Martha A. Stout Smith, he was a democrat. He
walked with a limp from war injuries. He was buried in Rankin or
Campbell Cemetery, Johnson Co., TN. Miss Eggers was a housekeeper and
Jessie married her after Martha died.
