Deaths of Reese and Benjamin Bowers

We have been unable to obtain the date, or many of the particulars of this tragedy.

They were the sons of Rev. Valentine Bowers, who was an old and highly respected Baptist minister. They had two brothers, William C. and Joseph P. Bowers. Reese Bowers was a Baptist minister at one time. The father and sons were all Union men. Reese and Benjamin were very active in the Union cause and assisted in piloting Union men and refugees to Ellis.

On the day previous to their death they received word from L. W. Hampton, a prominent Union man of the Doe River Cove, that there were some refugees near his home who were wanting a man to pilot them. These men had some experience in that line and left their homes in what was called the Neck, crossed the mountain to a point on the Watauga river near the Fish Spring, intending to go from there to Mr. Hampton’s. They requested a woman, Mrs. Smith, to set them across the river in a canoe. A company of rebel soldiers had made a raid down in the vicinity of Elizabethton, and were returning just as the Bowers’ got across the river. The latter seeing them started to run, when the soldiers opened fire on them as they ran towards the hills near by; the soldiers pursued them and overtook them. It was told to us that the elder Bowers, Reese, prayed and begged for his life, while Benjamin fought and cursed them with his dying breath; but the fate of each was the same. We have heard different stories as to who killed these men, one that they were killed by the Johnson county home guards under Parker, but their cousin, Isaac Bowers, now a resident of Elizabethton, and whose character for truth is unquestionable, informs us that they were killed by Bozen’s men, and that he recognized a pistol taken from them by Motte, whom we have mentioned as having been connected with a number of other tragedies.

On his Application to the Guion Miller Roll of the Eastern Cherokees, dated 19 Aug 1907, James DeLoach stated that his parents were Reece Bowers and Phoebe DeLoach. He stated that the parents of Reece Bowers were V.B. and Abigail Bowers, and that the parents of Phoebe DeLoach were John and Phoebe DeLoach (Phoebe was born in sullivan County, TN).

A birth certificate, or other civil record, which proves that Thomas was the son of John DeLoach has not been found. He is listed as such based upon the following circumstantial evidence: The 1840 Sullivan County Census lists John DeLoach with two sons between the age of 20-30. Thomas, and probably Nathan, could have been these sons. In the 1850 and 1860 Carter County censuses, Thomas has the household adjacent to John. There are no other DeLoach males listed in Northeastern Tennessee which could have been the father of Thomas. In the 1880 Carter County census, Thomas lists his father as being born in South Carolina. John was born in South Carolina.

Thomas married Perlina M. Oliver on 6 Oct 1842 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Perlina (daughter of George R. Oliver and Susannah White) was born in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died after 1910 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Siam Road, Elizabethton, Carter County, Tennessee. The name of Perlina is spelled differently is almost every civil record concerning her. The spelling P E R L I N A will be used for this record. This comes from the records of Jackie and Dawn Peters of Elizabethton, TN. Jackie is a descendant of the Oliver family of Northeastern Tennessee, as is Perlina. According to Jackie's records, Perlina's parents were George R. Oliver and Susannah White. His GEDCOM has been imported to show the ancestry of Perlina. The records of Albert Grindstaff, Independence, Missouri, also lists this same lineage. Census records indicate that Perlina's DOB was between 1820 and 1830; it was probably 1825 as shown on the 1850 and 1900 censuses. She is listed on the following Carter County censuses: 1850 1860 1870 1880 1900 Paulina 25 Polina 33 Palena 50 Pulina 50 garbled 75 In the 1850 thru 1880, she is listed as the wife of Thomas. In the 1900 Carter County census, she is in the household of her son, William DeLoach, and his wife, Frances Oliver. The Carter County Quarterly Minutes for January 1902 include a court order awarding Pliny DeLoach $4.00 as a Pauper Present. Circumstantial evidence points to Michael Allison DeLoach being the father of John DeLoach. Court House fires during the Civil War in Sullivan County, Tennessee and in South Carolina probably destroyed any records which could provide proof of this relationship. Results from the ongoing DeLoach DNA Project are tending to substantiate the circumstantial evidence.

John DeLoach is descended from Michel DesLoges, a French Huguenot who arrived in America in about 1664. The DesLoges family had escaped France during the time that the Huguenots were suffering from religious intolerance, and often state sponsored abuse and imprisonment. Their escape route is not known, but the family arrived in England between 1600 and 1660. Michel DesLoges may have been born in England. Whether or not, he did live there long enough to obtain trade skills as a tailor, and learn the English language. He obtained passage to America out of Bristol, England, and settled in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. There, he had the good fortune to meet and marry Jane Griffith, the only child of wealthy land owner Rowland Griffith. In his will, dated 9 August 1671, he gave 'all of my estate to Jane DesLoges, my only daughter , now wife unto Michaell Desloges, taylor'. Michel DesLoges anglicised his name to Michael DeLoach. He and Jane had three sons that grew to maturity, and possibly some daughters. The large estate that they inherited and developed was passed to their descendants, who also acquired considerable land and wealth. The family spread southward along the Atlantic seaboard, establishing large plantations in Surry County, Virginia, and Edgecombe and Bertie (later Northampton) Counties, North Carolina. One branch of the family left Edgeconbe County in 1791 and moved to the Southwest Territory into what would become Dickinson and Sumner Counties, Tennessee. From there, these DeLoach families moved to Kentucky, Alabama and Mississippi. Other descendants of the first North Carolina DeLoach family moved further south through South Carolina to Georgia. In South Carolina, there were clans of DeLoach families in Camden, Kershaw, Edgefield, Hampton and Saluda Counties. The history of these families can be found in the following publications:

As in most states during the early history of America, civil records such as birth, marriage and death certificates were not required in South Carolina until the early 1900's. The identification of family descendants is possible only if they are mentioned in wills, land transactions, or other official documents. It is possible for two professional genealogists to take the same raw information and develop completely different family structures because of the lack of definitive civil records. Additionally, if a son were to leave home upon reaching majority, and move to a new state never to return to his birth place, he might not even be mentioned in his parents' wills. For these reasons, the exact ancestry of John DeLoach has not yet been determined. The first records of John DeLoach in Tennessee appear in Sullivan County. In the Sullivan County Deed Book #6, 1809-1815, John Delock (sic) is a witness for the transfer of 100 acres on Frederick Kealler's Line from The United States of America, Stephen Walling, to Jonathan Carrier, dated 2 Oct 1810. In the 1812 Sullivan County Tax List, there appears to be two records of John DeLoach, one in Captain King's Military District, and one in Captain William Scott's District. John DeLoach and his family are listed in the 1840 Sullivan CountyCensus. Any other record of the DeLoach family in Sullivan County was probably destroyed when the court house burned in 1863. Records of the DeLoach family start appearing in Carter County in the 1830's. John DeLoach is listed on the 1834 Tax List, owning 126 acres. Susan DeLoach married Amos Wilson, 17 Nov 1834. Martha DeLoach married Eli Phillips, 11 Apr 1837. Thomas DeLoach married Perlina Oliver, 6 Oct 1842. Nancy DeLoach married John Hicks, 5 Mar 1845. John DeLoach and his family are listed on the 1850 Census.

The presence of records for the DeLoach family in Carter and Sullivan Counties during the 1830-1840 time frame leads to two possibilities:
a. There were two John DeLoach families in Northeastern Tennessee.
b. John DeLoach owned property in both counties. Resolving this conflict will be difficult, as no deed, land grant or other property transfer record for John DeLoach in either county has been found.
