Lawrence Hardin, 94 passed peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior on December 1, 2022. Born December 28,1927. Lawrence was the son of Clyde and Goldie Shankle Hardin and was born in Inman, VA and moved to Carter County as a young boy. He was a 1946 graduate of Unaka High School, where he was a basketball and baseball standout. Lawrence honorably served his country during World War II in the United States Army where he was stationed in Japan. He dutifully worked at North American Rayon Corporation for 40 years. Mr. Hardin was a charter member of Carter Christian Church in the Stoney Creek Community for 87 years, faithfully serving the church he loved as both a deacon and elder.

Lawrence was cherished by his family as a loving father and Papaw. He enjoyed being outside working in his yard and beautiful garden and reading and studying the Bible. He was an avid sports fan and loved watching the TN VOLS play football and basketball. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Ella Mae Hardin who passed away in 2015 and three brothers, Frankie, Johnny, and Howard Hardin.

Survivors include a daughter and son in law, Judy and Larry Estep, Elizabethton and a son and daughter in law, Philip and Karla Hardin, Fairhope, AL. Four granddaughters, Beth Bare and husband Daniel, Hollie Shah and husband Sam, Audrey Hardin, and Abigail Hardin; four great grandchildren, Kendall and Kacie Bare and Carson and Ava Shah; special sister-in-law Carol Myers.

Lawrence loved being at home and was comforted by all who gave him excellent care. A very special thank you to Amedisys nurses Megan and Sarah and Silver Angels nurse Cindy, and Stacey for your care and compassion.

The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00am Monday, December 5, 2022. in the funeral home. A graveside service will follow at 11:30am at Happy Valley Memorial Park, officiated by his son Phil Hardin.

Active Pallbearers will be Daniel Bare, Sam Shah, Carson Shah, Tony Hardin, Rex Scott, and Blake Taylor. Honorary Pallbearers will be his Carter Christian Church family, Dr. Ted Taylor, Jeff Buckles, Kenneth Nidiffer, Larry Estep, and Rick Hardin.

MRS. I. F. SHANKEL
Mrs. I. F. Shankel died at her home at Carter today of a heart attack.
She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Shipley of Bluff City and a member of a prominent pioneer family of this section.
Mrs. Shankel was married to I. F. Shankel in 1896, and is the mother of ten children, eight of whom survive her: Elbert, Clyde and Glynn Shankel, Mrs. A. M. Peters, Mrs. Clyde Hardin of Carter; Mrs. Roby Danner of Elizabethton, Mrs. Dallas Peters of Saginaw, Michigan and Hurshell Shankel who is with the U. S. Army stationed at Fort Ord, California. She is also survived by twenty-nine grandchildren; one brother, John Shipley of Bluff City; four sisters, Mrs. John A. Glover of Bristol, Mrs. Joe Rickards of Knoxville, Mrs. Joe Bullock and Mrs. Arthur Hyatt of Bluff City.
She had been a member of and closely affiliated with the Christian church for forty years.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Christian church at Carter with John Hall and G. H. Laws officiating. Burial will be on the Mountain View cemetery at Bluff City.

Alvin was born to John Nave Hardin (b. 1808) and Mary Fletcher (b. 1811). He married Margaret Evaline Lewis 28 Feb 1867 at Carter, TN. They had nine children. After Evelyn's death, Alvin married Sarah Richardson. Alvin's grandson Guy Hardin said, "If it hadn't been for Sarah, the family wouldn't have survived. Sarah married Alvin, with all those kids, and raised them as her own. She deserves some honorable recognition." Alvin is buried by his first wife, Eveline Hardin, in the Forbes Cemetery. But, Sarah's burial place is unknown. Her death record says she is buried at the "Harly" cemetery. It has been guessed that she is buried in the Hurley Cemetery in Carter TN where other Richardsons are buried. Any assistance with this mystery would be appreciated. Alvin raised his family in the head of Liberty Hollow. The property is still called the Alvin Lot at the foot of Iron Mountain to this day by the coon hunters. Alvin's middle name is almost certainly Powell, as two nephews are known to be named Alvin Powell Hardin. Civil War Service: Enlistment: 9 Aug 1863, Company C, 47th KY Infantry at Perry, KY; Discharge: 26 Dec 1864 at Lexington KY.

Margaret (daughter of Robert Allen Peters and Jemima (Peters)) was born about 1843 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died about 1884 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Forbes Cemetery, , Carter County, Tennessee.
