Birth and death dates are approximate. He was the son of Wilborn G Campbell and Elizabeth B Morton Campbell. He was the husband of Nancy J Simerly Campbell, also buried in this cemetery.

He was the grandson of Zachariah Campbell, Jr. and the great-grandson of Zachariah Campbell Sr., an early settler along the Watauga River, in the area by about 1780, certainly by 1790.

Alex was a private in Co. B of the 4th Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, U.S.A. (Union). He was among those taken POW at McMinnville, Tenn. by Confederate forces. Several members of the 13th Regiment Tenn. Vol. Cav., U.S.A. and the 4th Regiment were involved in the Bridge Burnings that were planned by William Carter and personally approved by Abraham Lincoln. See the book, History of the Thirteenth Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, U.S.A. by Scott and Angel (1903, reprint 1987) for a discussion of the Union loyalties of Carter County, especially the Hampton area.
