Notes:

Lawson G Smith and James L Bowers, both from Fish Springs, were brothers-in-law and best friends. They were both shot to death during an argument at a pie supper on March 15, 1913. The argument was over "outsiders" from Siam who some of the local girls had invited to the supper. That didn't set well with Lawson and Jim, and at some point in the evening, "Bowers and Smith finished their supper, left their seats and walked hurriedly" toward the boys from Siam, where the two "attacked the boys viciously." The outsiders pulled out their concealed pistols and shot Jim and Lawson. "Bowers was shot at such close range that the front of his double-breasted blue serge suit was set on fire. . . . A few seconds later, Lawson Smith fell heavily as the well-aimed bullets riddled his body" (pg. 17). Timbs writes that not too long before their tragic deaths, they had been warned by an elderly resident to "'settle down and stop all this trouble making.'" Jim Bowers' reply: "'I'll never settle down. I want to die with my boot on'" (17).

Jim Bowers and his best friend, Lawson Smith, were buried side by side in a single grave, originally at the old Fish Springs Cemetery (aka Smith Cemetery). Their remains were reinterred at Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery near Hampton due to the TVA Watauga project. Their epitaph reads: "Let our Father's will be done."

This story is taken from Mountain Memories: Stories of Old Fish Springs, Tennessee, by Lawrence C. Timbs, 1968 (self-published). Lawrence Timbs admits that many versions of this story have been reported; however, he selected this version, he says, from an eye witness, "which in my opinion comes closer to factual information than all the others."

Mr. Matheson was born in Butler, Tennessee and son of the late George W. & Mona Fay Reece Matheson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Faye Matheson, brothers and sisters, Billy Hoover Matheson, Dewey Matheson, Brown Matheson, Andy "Dud" Matheson, Oscar "Doc" Matheson, Letha Archer, Maude Grindstaff, Florence Delong and an infant sister.

He was a member of West Side Church of Christ.

Mr. Matheson was a United States Army Veteran.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel Lawrence "Danny," II & Sandy Matheson, Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and Randall & Jane Matheson, Jonesborough; grandchildren, Andrew Matheson, Rachel Collette and husband Kevin, David Matheson, and Aaron Matheson.

The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at the Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with funeral to follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Jack Dykes officiating.

Beulah Hardin Bowers, 96, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully Tuesday morning at home on July 2nd following an extended illness.
She was the daughter of the late Sallie and George Butler Hardin and was born in Carter County on April 14, 1917. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Crawford Leslie Bowers; as well as brothers, Ottie Hardin, Luther Hardin and Cecil Hardin; and a sister, Dorothy Heaton; and a grandson, Lewis Bowers.
She is survived by a daughter, Sara, of Elizabethton; and a son, Steven, of Elizabethton and his wife, Jennifer. She leaves behind her grandchildren, Kaylee and Drew Bowers, of Elizabethton, and Matthew Bowers, of West Lafayette, Indiana. A large number of nieces and nephews also survive.
She will be remembered for her cheerful, positive attitude and her zest for life. She and her husband, Crawford, were the original owners of Bowers Florist in Elizabethton and as a florist she enjoyed providing floral services for the community for decades. She was a member of the Highland Arrangers Garden Club and was a lifetime member of the Tennessee Federation of Garden Clubs.
Mrs. Bowers was a lifelong member of the Siam Baptist Church and was active in various capacities at the church over the years.
Beulah's other interests included cooking and entertaining her friends and family. She always had a smile and encouraging words for everyone. She found beauty in everything and always looked for the best in everyone.
The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to her friends and caregivers: Jewel Blevins, Shellie Davis, Tabitha McGill, Evelyn Blevins, Jo Anne Smith, Jennifer Lunceford, Anita West and Denise Plank for their loving devotion, friendship and the gentle care they provided for her over the past years.
A Celebration Of Life Service for Mrs. Bowers will be conducted at 6:00 PM Friday, July 5, 2013, at the Siam Baptist Church in Elizabethton with the Reverend Jack Roddy officiating. Special Music by Susan Heaton.
The family will receive friends at the church from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM prior to the service and at her home at other times.
A sunset interment at the Nave Cemetery in Siam will occur after the service. Robert "Tub" Rainbolt, 94, of Hampton, went home to be with his Lord and family on Tuesday, August 16, 2016, from Life Care Center of Elizabethton, following a brief illness. He was born in Butler, Tenn., to the late William Byrd Rainbolt and Annie McNeil Rainbolt. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Christine Whitehead Rainbolt; two sons, Larry Rainbolt and Richard Rainbolt; a brother, Harold Rainbolt; and his sisters, Nina White, Violet Logsdon, Novella Rainbolt and Elsie Rainbolt.
Robert had worked as a truck driver for Carter Enterprises and General Shale for over 35 years. He was a United States Army/Air Force veteran, having served during World War II in Markham Valley (New Guinea), Okinawa, Japan and Camp Chaffee, Ark. He was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed loafing, telling stories and listening to Swap and Shop.
Those left to cherish his memories include two sons, Robert John Rainbolt and Lester Rainbolt and wife Lisa, both of Hampton; six daughters, Phyllis Campbell and husband Ronnie of Hampton, Thelma Simerly and husband Jeffery of Roan Mountain, Betsy Rainbolt and Nick Simerly of Hampton, Shirley Greer and husband James of Kingsport, Christy Hall and husband Nicholas of Kemmerer, Wyo., and Amanda Rainbolt and Joshua Woodby of Grapeview, Wash.; 22 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Rainbolt of Elizabethton; and two sisters, Betty Logsdon of Chester, Va., and Inez Bussey of Baltimore, Md. Several nieces and nephews and countless friends and neighbors also survive.
A graveside service to honor and celebrate the life of Robert "Tub" Rainbolt will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, August 19, in the Butler Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Ronnie Campbell officiating. Military Honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Active pallbearers will be his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews, Sutton Brown, Bill Hughes, Johnny Lewis, J.L. with her Lord, Monday, March 14, 2022 in the Sycamore Shoals
Hospital. She was born October 12, 1923 in Stonega, Virginia to the
late David Franklin & Ethel Clawson Rainbolt.
She had lived most of her life in Carter County.
She was a formeremployee of NARC, Shadowline of Boone, NC and
Shirley’s Restaurant. Mrs Shaw was a member of Little Milligan Baptist Church where she had served
as a Sunday School Teacher for over 72 years. She spent her life faithfully serving the Lord and others,
leading many to accept Jesus into their hearts. She
enjoyed spending time with her family, studing the
Bible, and spent countless hours in her sewing room.
She also loved to sew. In addition to her parents, she
was preceded in death by her husband Marcus Shaw
who passed away June 17, 1984, by three sisters:
Lucille White, Ruth Williams and Susie Smith and
two brothers: John Rainbolt and Charles Rainbolt.
Survivors include her children: Gayle (Joel)
Eggers, New Port Richey, Florida, Gary (Peggy)
Shaw and Richard Shaw all of Mountain City. Seven

Ruth A. Williams, age 87, of Elizabethton, TN went home to be with Jesus on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late David F. and Ethel Clawson Rainbolt. Mrs. Williams was a member of Lynn Valley Baptist Church. She was a loving mother and sister who showed love to everyone she came in contact with. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and especially spending time with her sisters whom she adored.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Williams; a son, Danny "Ralph" Williams and two brothers, John Rainbolt and Charles "Bud" Rainbolt.

Those left to cherish his memory include three daughters, Patricia Hartley and husband John, Elizabethton, Traci McClure and husband Lance, Alta Vista, VA and Lynn Trivette and husband Steve, Elizabethton; six grandchildren, Amy Hartley, Doug Hartley and wife Amanda, Neil Hartley and wife Tara, Jacob McClure, Joshua McClure, Ashley Trivette and husband Victor and Carol Ann Johnson and husband Dale and seven sisters, Mary Alice Shaw, Butler, Francis Ward, South Carolina, Lucille White, Elizabethton, Nancy Jenkins, Elizabethton, Jane Miller, Ohio, Brenda Tenix, Elizabethton and Sue Smith, Butler. A Celebration of Life for Ruth A. Williams will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Monday, May 8, 2017 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Mr. Doug Hartley, minister, Rev. Lance McClure and Rev. Dennis Wilson officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Neil Hartley. A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Clayton and Elizabeth Rainbolt Ward. Mrs. Whaley was a member of Little Milligan Baptist Church for seventy years where she was active in Women on Mission. She retired from the Carter County School System where she worked as an aide on the bus for handicapped students. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Whaley, November 13, 1988 and one son, James D. "John" Whaley in 1995. Ruby Lee Elliott, 90, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 from her residence, following a brief illness. She was born in Carter County to the late Clayton and Mary Elizabeth Rainbolt Ward. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John M. Elliott on November 8, 1996; a son, John Donovan Elliott; three grandchildren, Cassie Elliott, John Elliott, Jr., and Gary Lynn Elliott; sisters, Beatrice Whaley and Louise Raines; an infant sister and an infant brother; four brothers, Frank, Tom, Ira, and Edward Ward.

Mrs. Elliott was retired from the Johnson City Medical Center as and LPN, where she had served for nineteen years. She was a member of Little Milligan Baptist Church and loved gardening, flowers, and being with her grandchildren and her dogs.

A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late Clayton and Mary Elizabeth Rainbolt Ward. He had lived a number of years in Carter County. He was retired member of the Raytheon Coporation of Bristol. Mr. Ward served in the United States Air Force during World War II. He was a member and Past Exalted Ruler of the Elizabethton Elks Lodge. He was a member and Past Worshipful Master of the Hampton Masonic Lodge #750. Mr. Ward was a former member of the Carter County Civil Service Board. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary Elizabeth Ward, a sister, Louise Rains and two brothers, Frank and Tom Ward. He was of the Baptist Faith. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Oliver Ward; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Steve Chambers, Elizabethton; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim C. and Joan Ward, and Rex and Crystal Ward, all of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Marinda and Matthew Lovelace, Beth Whitehead, Alex Chambers and Brianna Ward; three great-grandchildren, Dylan and Jada Whitehead and Ryan Peterson; four sisters, Beatrice Whaley, Butler, Ruby Elliott, Marjorie Pearson and Judy Micks, all of Elizabethton; two brothers, Fred C. Marjorie "Margie" Ward Pearson, age 85, of Elizabethton, passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2015 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina.

Margie was born on April 26, 1930 in Carter County, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Clayton J. Ward and Mary Elizabeth Rainbolt Ward. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Douglas Pearson; one son, Ken Pearson; four brothers, Tom, Frank, Ira, and Ed Ward; three sisters, Louise, Ruby and Bea; and three infant siblings.

Mrs. Pearson had worked in the cafeteria at Siam Elementary and was a member of Siam Baptist Church. She enjoyed gardening, flowers and "loving her grandchildren."

On June 5th with all of his children home, Dad departed earth for a pain free Heavenly Home.
Once a Marine-always a marine especially if you were a drill instructor. We agreed that when Dad entered the Pearly Gates he began to instruct others.
He served our military in the U.S. Marine Corp proudly in combat and everyday life. Dad was quick to speak his mind but if it came from his heart you knew it. If you entered our home you knew that you were family.
If it were not for the loving care of Dr. Thad Carter and our precious MHG Surgery Outpatient Staff Nurses the past six years could have been worse. We will miss our drill instructor!

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton and Mary Elizabeth Ward; three sisters, five brothers; and a great-grandson, Mikey.

He is survived by the most precious sacrificing woman on earth his wife, (our Mom), Patricia Ann Ward. He leaves four children, Janet Stewart (Roxy) of Saucier, James E. Ward, Jr. (Renee) of Yazoo City, Tambra Winters of Gulfport, Cheryl Lowman (Robert) of Pass Christian. The treasures of his life were his11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and the 3 great great-grandchildren that he left behind. He is also survived by 3 sisters, Ruby Elliott, Marjorie Pearson, Judy Mick, and a brother, Frederick Ward, all of Elizabethton, TN.

Fredric "Cog" Carroll Ward, age 76, of Elizabethton, Tennessee passed away on September 9, 2019 following an extended illness. Fredric was a native of Carter County and was a son of the late Clayton and Elizabeth Ward.

He was a 1964 graduate of Hampton High School. During his time in high school, he enjoyed running the half mile, one mile and two mile race which he received many ribbons for. He served in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1967 and was stationed in Vietnam, Korea, Japan and Okinawa.

He worked as a welder and worked in a nuclear plant for many years and later became owner operator of a tractor trailer rig working with different companies throughout the United States doing long hauls. He helped establish the Carter County Hunting and Fishing Club. He was an avid hunter, an avid race fan and a craftsman, working with wood, making turkey calls, eagles, jewelry boxes and walking canes. He also loved to read western books including Civil War books.

He attended Sims Hill Christian Church as often as his health permitted him to. He always said, "You need prayers? This church will always pray for you!" The church family meant a lot to him.

In addition to his parents, Clayton and Elizabeth Ward, he was preceded in death by his five sisters: Beatrice Whaley, Ruby Elliott, Marjorie "Margie" Pearson, Louise Raines and Judy "Amanda" Mick; four brothers: Tom Ward, Frank Ward, Ira Ward, Edward Ward, and three siblings who died at birth: Mary, Lemis, and Isaac Ward.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 39 years, Denise G. Ward; three children from a previous marriage: Patrick C. Ward and wife Casey, of Dunn, NC, Brian S. Ward and wife, Tara, of Elizabethton, TN, and Chris E. Ward, of Dunn, NC, six grandchildren, Krista L. HAMPTON - Lillian Maurine Smith Cutlip,101, Hampton, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017 in the Hermitage Health Center. A native of Carter County, (Fish Springs Community) she was a daughter of the late Frank & Sallie Main Smith. Mrs. Cutlip attended Watauga Academy, Butler. She was employed as a LPN at the former Carter County Memorial Hospital for several years. She was a member of the Daughters of The American Revolution, a member of the Hampton Eastern Star and a member of Rittertown Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Frank Edward Cutlip, December 20, 2000, by two daughters: Ranell Orfield and Shonette Tolley , three brothers: Brown, Bud & W.K. Doris Troutman, 88, of Hampton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 10, 2018, from Life Care Center of Elizabethton. Doris was born in Carter County to the late Frank and Sallie Main Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Guy Troutman, and several brothers and sisters.
Doris was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Rittertown Baptist Church where she was the choir director for over 30 years. Doris was a member of Eastern Star and enjoyed genealogy and loved singing praises to the Lord.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Anthony Troutman and wife Debbie of Hampton; two granddaughters, Allison and Cyndie and her husband Travis; and five great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Sadie M. Smith, 97, went to be with the Lord on February 24, 2019, at her home in the Fish Springs Community.
Sadie was a retired veteran of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, United States Army, and the United States Army Reserve, serving from 1942 until retirement in 1975. She held positions including mechanic/wheeled driver, nurse, clerk typist and many more. She also worked at Bemberg Corporation, General Electric Corporation in New York and attended Dourghes Technical School in Dallas, Texas.
After retirement, she became a farmer and caregiver to her elderly parents. She loved to fish, care for her animals and in later years enjoyed watching TBN, and talking to friends and family on the telephone.
She was preceded in passing by her parents, Raud and Nellie Smith, and by four sisters and one niece.
She is survived by one sister, June McEwen of Johnson City; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and her loyal dachshund Daisy, who was her constant companion.
Sadie was cared for by her great-niece, Emily Fletcher, and great-nephew, Christopher Schuettler and his family.
An indoor military service by the Carter County Honor Guard will be held at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton, Tenn., at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 17.

Clara Jeanette Hartley White, age 92, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the Watauga Medical Center. She was born May 12, 1921 in Carter County to the late John A. Hartley and Ruth Ellen Smith Hartley. In addition to her parents, Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Clark B. White; sister, Charlotte R. Hartley; and a brother, Sherman Hartley.

Clara was a graduate of Hampton High School. She and her husband, Clark, moved to Johnson County when construction of Watauga Dam began. Clara worked in special education for several years for the Johnson County School System. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Clara is survived by her daughters, Nancy White Tolliver and husband Kenneth of Mountain City, Jeanetta White Webster and husband Michael of Oklahoma City, OK and Linda White Green and husband Clifford of Morristown, TN; grandchildren, Ken Tolliver, Julie Tolliver, Anna Sams, Carol Poore, Sarah Green and Rebecca Yager; great grandchildren, Tyler Antrican, Sheldon Brooks and Nate Sams; and several nieces and nephews.

JONESBOROUGH - Mr. Randall Matheson, 54, Jonesborough, passed away Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Mr. Matheson was born in Washington County, son of the late Daniel Lawrence and Patricia Faye Hilbert Matheson.

Randall had a deep conviction of faith in God and His saving grace. He tried to live his life daily based on that faith.

He was a simple man who wanted to live a simple life. He didn't belong to a lot of organizations; he didn't want to be in or in front of a crowd. He really wouldn't have wanted this either— saying that, people who knew him would already know this. But what he did want is to have his friends and family near him and to always help them by whatever means he could. He might mow your yard, rake your leaves, plow your garden, help retrieve or fix your car, let you borrow any tool he had, or give construction advice. It brought him great joy when he could help someone. He saw his construction business as a way to help people have homes for building families.

Family always came before self for Randall. Nothing gave him more joy than spending time with his family, preferably beside a creek in the mountains with the jeep top off. Spending time with and being part of the lives of his children meant the world to him. All he asked of them was to try their hardest and do the best they could at everything they endeavored to do. They've strived their whole lives and will continue to do everything they can to make him proud. He thought never of himself, but only of his neighbors, friends, family, parents, wife, children, and God. There are no words to express the loss, only comfort in faith of God.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jane Garside Matheson; daughter, Rachel Collette (husband Kevin); son David Matheson; grandson Oliver Collette; brother, Dan Matheson (wife Sandy); and nephews Andrew and Aaron Matheson.

The family will receive friends from 6:00– 8:00 PM, Thursday, October 13, 2016 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 8:00 PM with Dr. Mark Herrod and Chaplain Richard Willis officiating.

Graveside arrangements will be announced. Pallbearers will be David Matheson, Kevin Collette, Dan Matheson, Sal Cicirello, Ken Tester, Dan Edwards, David Munpower, and Randy Dykes.
